I Have a Panic Disorder. Here's How I'm Coping With the Coronavirus Pandemic

For weeks, many of us have been sheltering in our homes in an effort to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus. The frustration and boredom of being inside for so long can be miserable for just about anyone - but it's hard to convey the experience of being confined at home, while also having a panic disorder. My symptoms have only seemed to grow more intense with each news update. I can feel my shoulders get heavier and a knot of anxiety tighten inside me, as I become overwhelmed not only by the fear of becoming sick, but also the uncertainty about the future.

Even under normal circumstances, I had a panic attack at least once every month. Panic attacks are not the same as a rush of anxiety; mine are marked by sudden dizziness, chest pain, and the feeling that my heart is pounding. They crop up without warning. My first panic attack happened when I was 20 years old and attending a concert. I wasn't anxious, as one might expect. In fact, I was having a good time, until midway through the concert when I felt my shoulders grow heavy and I became dizzy. Suddenly, I had this fear that I was dying, and I had to leave the venue. The attack lasted about 15 minutes, but for the next couple days, I was almost in a haze. The panic attacks I've experienced since then come on just as abruptly - I have maybe a few seconds of warning, and all I can do is sit down with my head between my knees and wait it out.

Through the years, I've learned that having a routine helps a lot. Just knowing what to expect from my day and being able to avoid any crowds and stress-inducing situations gives me a sense of control. Unfortunately, staying at home during this crisis has taken away any semblance of structure. Instead, I find myself scrolling through my phone, mindlessly refreshing social media apps. With every cough or change in body temperature, I begin to panic, checking the symptoms of COVID-19 for what feels like the millionth time. On top of that, my mind is constantly thinking of what I should be doing or worrying about what's going to happen after all of this over. The situation we're in is unprecedented, and because of this, I feel my grip on the future slipping away.

I remind myself constantly that this is all temporary. In time, the world will return to normal.

I know many people, with or without a panic disorder, are feeling a little unhinged during this time. For me, creating a schedule for my housebound days has helped. Every night, I write down what I'm going to do the following day. I've been doing light workouts like yoga and Pilates, which help keep my mind off the news and the possibility of another panic attack. I've finally picked up the books I've been trying to finish for months, and I've even started taking some online courses - like 18th century opera and Mandarin Chinese - to busy myself with studying. I find that positive distractions are essential to keeping my mind clear.

While it helps to develop these types of coping skills, I've found that it's just as crucial to stay connected to friends and loved ones. It may not be possible to do so in person right now, but daily phone or video calls can help bring your energy back when you're feeling low.

Finally, I remind myself constantly that this is all temporary. In time, the world will return to normal, and we'll go back to school or work and regain the structure we're currently lacking. When that happens, the anxiety and panic attacks I struggle with won't suddenly disappear - and so, I'm more grateful than ever for those who stay by my side during hard times. Not just during this global crisis, but every day I'm fighting a battle that's mine alone.

Rock Hudson's True Story Is Wildly Different From Netflix's Hollywood

Rock Hudson is a prominent character in Ryan Murphy's latest show Hollywood, now streaming on Netflix. Though Hudson is a very real actor who led a high-profile life in Hollywood, the characteristics between Murphy's iteration of him and the real man are vastly different. In Hollywood, Hudson shows up in the City of Angels with his real name, Roy Fitzgerald, looking to become a star. The handsome and very green actor is terrified to be gay but ends up accepting that he is. This is basically where Murphy deviates from Hudson's real story and into a fictional character.

Hudson, whose birth name was Roy Scherer but became Roy Fitzgerald when his stepdad adopted him, did grow up in Winnetka, IL, before coming to Hollywood to become a star. After sending his headshots all over town, he met an agent named Henry Willson. Like in Hollywood, Willson took a liking to Hudson because he saw potential, but he knew he needed a better name. He handed him the moniker Rock Hudson to match his rugged good looks.

In the Netflix series, Willson, as well as everyone else around Hudson, finds out pretty quickly that he's gay, especially because he's dating (fictional) screenwriter Archie Coleman. In real life, Hudson kept his sexuality under wraps, never publicly admitting that he was gay. No one truly knows if Willson was aware of Hudson's sexuality, though the truth has often been considered a commonly accepted secret in Hollywood.

Hudson's acting career got off to a slow start, thanks to never having any acting training. But he eventually got a contract with Universal Pictures, which not only provided him acting lessons, but it put him on the path to stardom. Hudson starred in a number of films in the late 1940s and 1950s, but it was 1956's Giant that The New York Times says catapulted him into the ranks of the stars.

As Hudson continued to make films, he also married Phyllis Gates - Willson's secretary - in 1955. The marriage only lasted three years. Mark Griffin, who wrote All That Heaven Allows: A Biography of Rock Hudson, told NPR in 2018 that there could be any number of reasons Hudson and Gates got married in the first place, but many believed it was a setup by Willson to keep the illusion of Hudson's heterosexuality alive. "And almost as though [Willson] sent out a casting call, he was looking for the perfect person to be the king of Hollywood's consort," Griffin said to NPR. "And so it could be that Henry Willson very shrewdly put together Rock and his secretary, and a lot of people insist this is exactly how it happened. It was an arranged marriage from the get-go."

Hudson continued acting for the next 30 years and lived as a closeted gay man - a complete departure from how he's portrayed in Hollywood. While the Hudson in Hollywood publicly shows up at the Academy Awards on the arm of his screenwriter boyfriend and proceeds to lead an openly gay life, the real Hudson never did anything of the sort. Murphy told New York Post that his ideas for the show were based in reality. "I wanted to give some people who were dealt a terrible hand by Hollywood a happy ending," he said, which is why he turned Hudson's real story on its head and let him be gay from the start.

However, for the real Hudson, it wasn't so peachy, and instead he contracted AIDS. In July 1985 Hudson acknowledged his AIDS diagnosis, and though it wasn't an admission of his sexuality, it was assumed at the time that that's what it meant. After his diagnosis, Hudson contacted his previous lovers to tell them to get tested, according to Griffin's book, but did so anonymously. He died in October 1985, just a few months after announcing his illness, still never having said he was gay.

Why You Should Take Symptoms of COVID-19 Seriously, Even If You're Not Running a Fever

If you've read much about COVID-19, you know that fever, cough, and shortness of breath are hallmarks of the disease. But while many people will run a fever - for as long as a week or more - it's possible to contract the virus and never see a spike in your temperature.

"You can definitely have COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, without fever," David Cutler, MD, a family medicine physician at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, told POPSUGAR. In fact, many people who are infected experience no symptoms at all, while many others have only mild symptoms, which may or may not include a fever.

Natasha Bhuyan, MD, a family practitioner and regional medical director of One Medical, explained that most patients do run a fever, but it's hard to nail down an accurate statistic. "Research of laboratory confirmed cases shows that 88 percent of patients with COVID-19 have a fever; however, that number might not be accurate," Dr. Bhuyan said. "We know there are many mild cases of COVID-19 that are never confirmed with testing, since the person may not seek medical care and recover on their own. As a result, the number of people with COVID-19 who have a fever might be lower than 88 percent."

While it's unclear why some people never run a fever - or develop one later in the course of the virus - it's important to recognize that you can be infected and even contagious without it. If you're experiencing other symptoms of COVID-19, call your doctor, who can help you determine your next steps and serve as a resource as you recover.

Remember, even if you have no symptoms, you should continue to follow best practices like social distancing and wearing a cloth mask in public. Those who are asymptomatic can unknowingly contribute to the spread of the virus. "This is one reason the disease travels so fast and so far," Dr. Cutler said.

The Avengers Had a Very Special Reunion During the Kids' Choice Awards: "Love You 3000"

The Avengers assembled via video chat for the Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday. During the virtual special, which donated $1 million to No Kid Hungry, onscreen superheroes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner shared a message as they accepted the award for favorite movie. In addition to thanking fans for all of their support over the years, they also offered words of encouragement for everyone social distancing during the coronavirus epedemic. "We're stronger together. We'll get through this," Hemsworth said, before Evans added, "Whatever it takes."

The appearance comes just a day after Evans joined Instagram and participated in the All in Challenge. In a video message, he revealed that he would be offering a virtual hang out with his Avengers: Endgame costars. "We can do a private Q&A, you can ask us anything, we'll spill the beans, then maybe some games," he said. "I would recommend Scattergories." Peter and Kelley's Relationship Timeline Is Crazy - Even by Bachelor Standards

Peter Weber's season of The Bachelor just keeps getting wilder, even though it's been over for weeks! Why are we talking about his relationship timeline with Kelley Flanagan? Well, the latest news has Peter weathering the current quarantine situation with an unexpected companion: Kelley, one of the eliminated contestants from his season who he also happened to meet before the show even started.

Their relationship timeline goes back to the fall of 2019 and apparently is continuing right now. After rumors that the two had rekindled their romance from The Bachelor, Peter made things Instagram official with a snap of them kissing. Kelley is the third contestant from his season that Peter has been linked to since filming ended, following his brief engagement to Hannah Ann Sluss and his even briefer rekindling with Madison Prewett. For now, here's a complete timeline of how Peter and Kelley's relationship has unfolded up to this point.

The Likely Guidelines Disney World and Its Hotels Will Have to Follow Once They Reopen

Disney's parks and other large theme parks like Universal Studios have been closed since mid-March, leaving fans to ride park attractions virtually and cook up their favorite Disney treats at home. And while the country as a whole is beginning to think about what life will look like after the first wave of this pandemic eases up, Florida's Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force is also focused on putting a plan in place for reopening the state's theme parks.

Although it's still unclear as to when it will be safe enough for these large parks to open - Orange County mayor Jerry Demings says June seems "more realistic" than May, but nothing is official - the task force's initial guidelines outline what Disney World and other large theme parks might look like upon reopening for both guests and employees. Keep reading to learn more.

Guidelines For Reopening Disney and Other Theme Parks

Within the new guidelines for reopening the country in phases, the first phase will be the earliest possible reopening, while phase two marks the period after a continued decrease in coronavirus cases.

In the first phase of the Disney World reopen (and that of all other large parks), the park will be able to fill to 50 percent capacity (that'll bump up to 75 percent in phase two). Mandates will largely focus on the employees wearing masks at all times, getting their temperature taken before each shift, and staying home if they're feeling ill or are 65 and older. Touchless hand sanitizer stations will be located all over the parks - especially at ticket booths and ride entrances - and railings and surfaces will be wiped down after every use. Guidelines for large parks will also include putting down tape markings for guests to stand six feet apart on each attraction line (the silver lining of this spaced-out practice that will make lines seem all the more long is that you won't have to hear the whining of the kid behind you who just "wants to ride already" - small wins).

Guidelines For Reopening Theme Park Hotels

In phase one, hotels will encourage mobile check-ins if available, limit housekeeping for minimal employee/guest exposure, have contactless room service delivery, and promote social distancing whenever possible. Touchless hand sanitizer stations will be recommended for common spaces, highly used surfaces like elevator buttons and door handles will be cleaned often, and self-parking will be encouraged. Additionally, guest rooms may look a little different as items like glassware, coffee cups, and coffee makers will be removed, and sadly, minibars will not be stocked, so you should definitely bring your own snacks.

Guidelines For Reopening Theme Park Restaurants

Like the parks, restaurants will be able to fill to 50 percent capacity in phase one and 75 percent in phase two. Disposable paper menus will be encouraged, as will takeout and delivery options. For those dining in, tables will be set up at least six feet apart. As with both the parks and hotels, employees will be clad in masks, hand sanitizer will be everywhere, and constant wiping down of surfaces will occur.

Guidelines For Reopening Theme Park Retail Stores

For retail stores, all entry doors are expected to be propped open with hand sanitizer stations at the ready, though door handles and other commonly touched surfaces should be wiped down regularly. Checkout lines will have markers down to ensure shoppers are six feet apart.

All of the above plans, which, as mentioned, are just the initial thoughts of Florida's economic recovery task force in particular, are subject to change and evolve as more information about the virus and the country's reopening plans become available. No matter when Disney parks reopen, expect everything to look quite different than normal - but hopefully, visits will be no less magical.

These Simple Spinach Puffs Inspired By The Emperor's New Groove Are Kronk's Dream Come True

As a kid, there were countless cartoon foods that caught my eye and made me wish I was animated for just a minute, so I could see if they really tasted as good as they looked. The grey stuff from Beauty and the Beast, the cheesy pizza from An Extremely Goofy Movie, those snow cones from Lilo & Stitch, and Kronk's spinach puffs from The Emperor's New Groove. Now, 20 years later, I've decided to make my own version of the classic Disney treat in cup form for my snacking convenience.

Kronk probably made his spinach puffs with several different cheeses, the finest puff pastry, and a little a lot more finesse. But I used what I had in my pantry to make these delicious-looking cartoon appetizers into a treat I could enjoy without transforming into a llama, and I have to say, I'm pretty satisfied. Keep reading to see just how easy it is to whip up a batch of these cheesy spinach bites for yourself and enjoy them next time you decide to have a Disney movie marathon.

To All The Grandmas Out There: We're Thinking of You This Mother's Day

For me, Mother's Day this year will look a lot like the days that have lead up to it. I might sleep in a little later, swap a hurried shower for a bath, get crazy with some pancake toppings, but I'll be home with the kids.

Being with my kids for Mother's Day is something I realize my own mom won't be able to do. It's been more than 6 weeks since she's held my 11-month-old or hugged my 4-year-old, a stretch of time that feels especially strange since my parents live less than five minutes away from us.

Since social distancing at home, we've marked the passing of time in milestones: my baby mastering a floppy hand wave, pulling himself up to a standing position, and sprouting two top teeth that are only visible when he flashes the biggest smile; my 3-year-old becoming a 4-year-old, flying his first kite, and braving a big hill on his scooter.

My mom can't be there to catch my 11-month-old when he topples over after growing too confident in his ability to stand or show my 4-year-old how to manipulate a kite string as it catches a breeze, but her physical distance didn't stop her from teaching my baby to wave at the end of each video call or baking my 4-year-old a birthday cake to drop off at our doorstep.

To all the grandmas out there: we're thinking about you this Mother's Day and every day.

I Make Homemade Ramen, and It's Actually a Lot Easier Than You Might Think

I've been hooked on ramen pretty much since the very first time I tried it. While I love going out for a professionally made bowl of it, I've also been experimenting for years with different ways to make the comfort food myself. While it may seem intimidating, I can tell you that it's not nearly as hard as you might think it is.

First, start with the noodles. I recommend cooking the noodles separately from the broth to prevent them from getting gummy. Then, sauté your onions and mushrooms until they're nice and browned. Add garlic and cook for about a minute.

To make your chicken broth, add the chicken base to the hot water and stir to combine. Pour chicken broth into your pot and bring it back up to a simmer. Meanwhile, slice your chicken thin (I like to slice it while it's still frozen - I swear it works!).

To get an especially savory flavor, I combine one tablespoon each of soy sauce, miso paste, and Worcestershire sauce to make my very own "flavor bomb." I add this secret sauce to a lot of my favorite meaty dishes.

Once you add the sliced chicken, your broth should look like this:

The end result is a dish that's packed with flavor and perfect for low-key weeknights. Keep reading for the full recipe and instructions.

Join Maluma, J Balvin, and More in Celebrating our Essential Farmworkers at Altísimo Live! Virtual Festival

Farmworkers are essential - and during this pandemic, they're also at risk. Most of them are undocumented immigrants who are trying to understand how to navigate the coronavirus outbreak while staying safe and providing for their families.

Many of these unsung heroes continuing to work closely to each other in the fields and packing facilities so the rest of us can have food on our table are Latinx/Hispanic, and a lot of them have spent decades in the US and even have American children.

Come May 5, the tables will turn and we'll highlight the incredible bravery and strength of these people, part of our Latinx community, thanks to the Altísimo Live! Pop Culture and Music Festival. This is a live stream benefit inspired by Live Aid and supported by P&G, that will aim to raise $3 million for the Farmworkers Pandemic Relief Fund, created by Justice for Migrant Women and Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP).
