Should You Really Spend the Night Cuddling Your Dog? Vets Share the Pros and Cons

For some people, there's nothing better than cuddling with their pooches. And a growing number of people are snuggling up with furry companions at night. In fact, according to a survey sponsored by SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence, 50 percent of dog owners say their dog sleeps in a family member's bed. But is having your pup sleep next to you really a good habit? Pet experts have mixed opinions. On the one hand, there are many benefits to cosleeping with your dog. But on the other, there are also many concerns. What's a pet owner to do?

Leslie Brooks, DVM, veterinary advisor for Betterpet, believes there is no right or wrong answer. "It really depends on the lifestyle and preferences for the pet owner, including their home environment and family dynamics," she said. "There's not necessarily anything better about letting your dog sleep in your bed as opposed to letting them sleep in their own designated sleeping area, either."

Still, the ultimate decision is yours to make. "Really it comes down to you, your pet, and any other cosleepers involved if they are allowed to have a say," said Gabby Pagana, DVM, MPH, CVA of HealthyBud. Read on to get a better understanding.

What factors should be considered before I let my dog sleep in my bed?

Experts say pet owners should first assess their own as well as their dog's sleep habits, hygiene, medical conditions, and temperament and personality.

"Does your pet snore, and if so, does it bother you?" Dr. Pagana asked. "Are multiple pets sleeping in the bed? If so, do they all get along? Is there enough space for every sleeper? Does your pet have accidents at night? Are you a light sleeper? Are you a clean freak? Have allergies or other sensitivities? Immunocompromised?" Think these through before making your decision.

What are the benefits to sharing a bed with my dog?

Sleeping with your pup can have a positive effect on your mental health, said Amanda Nascimento, DVM, PhD, lead veterinarian at NHV Natural Pet. "The closeness we feel with our pets can reduce blood pressure and help us with stress and depression," she said. This is because sleeping with your dog can induce oxytocin release in the brain, which decreases cortisol levels and blood pressure - which can relieve stress, anxiety, and depression.

Having your dog sleep in your bed can also strengthen the bond between you two, Dr. Nascimento said. This is a huge benefit since a strong bond can dramatically and positively impact both of your lives. Constant companionship at night can also increase your sense of security and ease loneliness, allowing you to feel more comfortable and protected, Dr. Brooks said. This can be especially beneficial if you need emotional support. "It could be beneficial to have your dog sleep in the bed with you to provide that constant touch or feeling of security," she said.

What are the downsides of letting my dog sleep in my bed?

It's nothing you wouldn't expect: the bed can become overheated in warm months, your bedding will get dirtier faster with all the dog hair and slobber, you probably won't have as much space to stretch and spread out (especially if you have a big dog), and you'll get less alone time at night, Dr. Pagana said.

Are there health risks to letting my dog sleep in my bed?

In short, there can be. "This includes possible allergies and asthma flare-ups from irritating dander buildup, dirt, and pollen on your dog," Dr. Pagana said. Dogs may also bring parasites like fleas, ticks, and mites into the bed. Luckily, most of these bugs do not cause harm to humans, she said. Dogs can also transmit skin fungal infections (like ringworm) or other icky bacteria (like Pasteurella multocida or Staphylococcus spp.) to their cosleepers. However, you will likely know if your dog has this kind of infection and can make a judgement call.

It's important to remember that disease transmission isn't a one-way street. Dr. Nascimento explains that you can transmit a disease to your dog, too. That's why you should always proceed with caution, especially those who are immunocompromised. "If, during the night, you experience any symptoms such as sneezing, nasal obstruction, runny nose, watery eyes, itchy nose or throat, or itchy skin, stop allowing your pet into the bed immediately," she said.

Can my dog develop behavior issues from sleeping in my bed?

"Dogs thrive on routines, so allowing a pet to sleep in the bed may make them refuse to sleep in another place," Dr. Nascimento said. "In addition, allowing them to sleep in the bed may influence their behavior and give them the feeling that your bed is actually their bed - so tread with care!"

Dogs with preexisting behavioral issues like territorial aggression or separation anxiety may need to be banned from the bed to avoid exacerbating those issues, Dr. Pagana said. For example, if you kick your dog with separation anxiety out of the bed, it can worsen their anxiety, destructive behaviors, and overall mental health. Moreover, if you scare your dog out of their sleep (say by accidentally kicking them), they may unexpectedly and unknowingly attack you, Dr. Brooks said. And if you dog is little, there is a risk that you could accidentally push them off the bed while you're sleeping, she said.

Will sleeping with my dog disturb my sleep?

Actually, it may allow you to sleep more at ease, Dr. Pagana said. According to a study published in Sleep Review, dogs can help people have fewer nightmares. If you're someone who has trouble falling asleep or has insomnia, your furry friend can help with that as well. Plus, sleeping with your pup can also provide warmth during cool months - so bring on the cuddles!

In contrast, having your pet sleep with you can also hinder your sleep quality, Dr. Pagana said, explaining that you may experience more sleep interruptions, such as snoring, movement, and taking up space in bed. A recent study published by Hoffman et al. found that dogs are more likely to influence your movement throughout the night than you are to influence theirs - basically, your dog is likely to make you toss and turn. Additionally, "if your dog has a medical or behavioral condition that keeps them up at night (like they're awake scratching from allergies), it could disturb your healthy sleep patterns," Dr. Brooks said. She further explained that if your dog has a condition that causes them to have vomiting or incontinence issues while sleeping, that's probably not something you want in your bed.

What are some tips for sharing a bed with my dog?

Dr. Pagana advises pet owners to wash all bedding at least once every week; ensure your pet is on proper preventatives for fleas, ticks, and other parasites; take notice of your pet's sleeping patterns (and talk to your vet if they change); and crate train your puppy first to prevent separation anxiety. She also suggests practicing proper hygiene for your pets, including regular baths, wiping their paws down after being outside or on walks, and using skin conditioning and antibacterial sprays for maintenance.

Additionally, Dr. Nascimento recommends restricting the area of the bed your pet is allowed to sleep in or only allowing your pet on a special pet blanket at the foot of the bed, so you have plenty of room to rest. She also says to make sure your dog has gone out for their nightly poop or pee so you don't have any surprises. Otherwise, snuggle up and happy sleeping!

I Finally Care More About Being Strong Than Skinny, and It's Because I'm Working Out at Home

The first time I was congratulated for losing weight, I had just gotten my wisdom teeth out. For the past week, the only thing I had been able to stomach was chocolate pudding, plain yogurt, and lukewarm soup, but my doctor didn't know that. All she saw were the numbers on the scale ticking downwards - a cause for celebration, not concern.

I liked what my doctor was saying. For once, I felt like I had done something important - like I might actually have a shot at looking like the models I loved to compare myself to. I felt powerful, in control, and enjoyed being praised for what could only be my newfound commitment to health and fitness. In the moment, I didn't feel like acknowledging that my weight loss was by no means the result of a healthy lifestyle.

I had always been a healthy weight, but was never traditionally thin, so this kind of admiration was new to me. In years past, I would try to suck in my gut during dance class, shrinking my profile in the mirror as much as I could, and becoming frustrated when I couldn't make my backside look completely flat like the other girls. I became obsessed with my size and thought that if I could just lose a few more pounds, I would look the way I was "supposed to." I didn't know how, but I knew that getting thinner was my ultimate goal.

As I went through high school, I placed more and more value on superficial measures of skinniness that (spoiler alert) I was never able to fully achieve. Thigh gaps, flat stomachs, and, most importantly, the numbers on the scale, were the determining factors in how I felt about myself. What I heard that day in the doctor's office only confirmed my own toxic ideas about weight loss: skinniness meant health, and fitness wasn't anything without it.

A few years later I was off to college, and most of the exercise I attempted there continued to center around weight loss. I'd have a great workout and still find myself discouraged if I felt like I was gaining weight. Likewise, I'd pick up terrible eating habits and become delighted once I found that they were helping me become closer to a skinnier ideal.

When social distancing became the new normal, however, my goals were temporarily derailed. I was home, hungry, and didn't have anyone around me to impress - not even my doctor. Without a gym or any motivation to do anything other than skim through social media and watch Tiger King, I turned to home workouts. Not as a means to lose weight, but as a way to pass the time and keep myself moving during a long period of isolation.

I started off half heartedly with a few videos that promised to target my abs and arms, and they delivered. The next morning my muscles were sore in a new way - a good way - and although I didn't initially believe that the various sets of crunches and planks would ever become easier, I was interested in the idea that a workout could mean more than just a smaller dress size.

I was finally working out because I wanted to feel like my best self no matter what my body looked like externally.

For the next month, I worked my way through different home workouts, even attempting intense HIIT exercises I used to avoid at all costs. In those four weeks, I grew stronger than I ever had when all I cared about was losing weight. My body was changing in a way I liked, but I was more excited about my ability to fly through the workouts I had initially struggled with, challenging myself in new ways and genuinely enjoying myself in the process. Workouts were now something I looked forward to instead of something I dreaded, and I noticed real progress that had nothing to do with my weight.

It took a few weeks of social distancing and some chaotic circumstances, but I was finally working out because I wanted to feel like my best self no matter what my body looked like externally. Going into my second month of home workouts, I'm continuing to view my health in terms of strength and nutrition, not weight loss and quick diets. Now when I approach my fitness, I remember to be mindful about what it is I actually want to achieve and whether or not I'm being honest with myself about my goals. Home workouts were my unexpected saving grace, but even when the gyms open back up and social gatherings resume, these are habits I'll want to keep forever.

The Kissing Booth 2 Officially Has a Release Date, and Now We're Counting Down the Days

Netflix's teen rom-com The Kissing Booth is getting a sequel, but when does it actually come out? On May 21, Joey King revealed in a YouTube live stream that The Kissing Booth 2 will officially drop on July 24. The film will follow Elle (King) and Noah (Jacob Elordi) as they juggle a long-distance relationship as she starts senior year of high school and he heads off to Harvard. However, things get a little complicated when Noah grows close to a seemingly perfect college girl named Chloe (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), and Elle must decide how much she trusts Noah.

We already know that the principal photography for the sequel wrapped up all the way back in August 2019. King actually posted a wrap-day photo to Twitter back in August, captioning it, "A pile of clothes, 5 deflated birthday balloons, a covered tattoo, a wig and my last day as Elle Evans in South Africa. Thanks for the memories."

The sequel will bring back the original cast, including King, Elordi (now pulling double duty with his role on HBO's Euphoria), and Joel Courtney as the trio of teenagers at the center of the first movie's unconventional triangle. Elordi surprised some fans when he talked to The Hollywood Reporter about his experiences with his two very different teen roles, revealing that he doesn't exactly have the highest opinion of his Kissing Booth character.

"It's two completely different experiences [making The Kissing Booth and Euphoria]. The Kissing Booth was the first film I ever made - it was sort of my ticket to Hollywood, so I was really grateful for that. It's almost like righting my wrongs a little bit too, because the character in The Kissing Booth is awful and it's never really explained. He's kind of idolized and made into a hero, so I suppose this show is showing why," he said

Netflix also announced in May 2019 that two new faces would be joining the cast. Richardson-Sellers, best known for her role(s) on DC's Legends of Tomorrow, will be playing the new character named Chloe, while Taylor Zakhar Perez will play Marco. The Instagram announcement also teased that they "are love interests but . . . not for each other . . ." Looks like there will be plenty more romantic twists and turns when The Kissing Booth 2 debuts on Netflix later this summer!

HBO's Golden State Killer Doc Is About to Wreak Havoc on Your Psyche For 6 Straight Weeks

The Golden State Killer terrorized California throughout the 1970s and '80s, committing at least 50 sexual assaults and 12 murders. Although she didn't have a badge, the late Michelle McNamara dedicated every moment of her spare time to researching and identifying the serial killer. She wrote about the experience in her book I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer, which was coauthored by several other crime journalists and published posthumously in 2018. The story has inspired a new docuseries, premiering on HBO on June 28.

The true crime book-turned-documentary series, simply called I'll Be Gone in the Dark, will have a total of six parts. Beginning at 10 p.m. on June 28, each part will air on consecutive Sundays in the same time slot. Like most HBO series, it will be available to stream beginning at 7 p.m. on the West Coast.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark gives a look into the initial flawed investigation, McNamara's part in bringing the killer to justice, and how the case impacted her mental state. The story is told through McNamara's own words, using exclusive recordings and excerpts from her book read by actor Amy Ryan. You can also expect new content in the detective story, including interviews with detectives, survivors, and family members of the violent rapist and killer. Although this story unfolds the chilling details and unfathomable crimes of the Golden State Killer, this is also a series about obsession and persistence.

How a Subscription Box Service Gave Me Confidence to Teach My Toddler During Quarantine

There was a distinct moment during shelter in place where I realized the (warranted) sighs from working parents frustrated with homeschooling while holding down jobs and stepping in as household IT support didn't entirely apply to me. I worked from home; I was frustrated; I was trying my best to fill my daughter's day with exploration and education. But my 28-month-old was just on the brink of beginning preschool. In fact, it was just days before the SIP order that I got an email from a preschool saying they'd likely have a spot for my daughter in the next few weeks.

So when a neighbor mentioned how great it was for her daughter to see classmates via Zoom, I sighed a different kind of sigh. We hadn't started schooling so, well, we didn't have anything formal to follow, or anyone familiar to see. And it was at that moment I reassessed the random Instagram Live gym and music classes we'd been joining. It all felt a little directionless; we didn't recognize anyone. Though I knew I was trying my best, I felt guilty that my daughter was at a pivotal point and ready to absorb the world and socialize in a classroom setting - and with her usual gym and art classes all canceled, it was up to me to come up with something. It needed to be fun, somewhat educational (again, she's 2), part of a routine, and easy to execute. I did a bunch of research to see how other parents were entertaining their young tots and knew what to do. Hitting play on some virtual class wasn't going to cut it. I needed to teach her, even if I didn't know how.

After looking through various activity subscription box services, I chose Little Passports's Early Explorers subscription box for 3- to 5-year-olds. It was geared slightly older - my daughter is not even 2 1/2 yet - but it had such strong reviews that I felt confident it would provide me with exactly what I needed: direction, a routine, and engagement. Here's how it worked:

How Often Should You Clean Your Grill? A Lot More Than You Probably Think

When the weather is sunny and warm, there's nothing better than firing up the grill and cooking your favorite summer dishes. Whether you're throwing a couple of steaks on the barbecue, making a grilled salad, or anything in between, that smokiness really brings out the flavor and enhances the fresh ingredients that are the hallmark of summer - that is, of course, if you're cleaning your grill often enough.

The unfortunate truth is that we rarely clean our grills as often as we're supposed to. You can't just rely on the fire and heat to clean it for you while you cook. In fact, you should be cleaning your grill every single time you use it. And it's best to give it a scrub with a brush after you cook up those burgers or skewers, not before. Otherwise, the grime, oil, fat, and debris can add unwanted flavor to your meals, not to mention carcinogens - a substance that can form when meat isn't grilled properly that can cause cancer - when burnt to a crisp.

If you've been skimping on the cleaning, consider deep cleaning your grill before your next cookout. If you have a gas grill, you can turn up the heat to burn off any debris, then scrub it with a grill brush. For really gunky barbecues with a removable grill piece, you can soak it in warm, soapy water and wipe clean with a grill brush or clean cloth. Do this once a season and everyone will be raving about your culinary prowess!

10 Facts About Pippa Middleton's Wedding That Will Make You Feel Like You Were a Guest

Pippa Middleton wed her longtime boyfriend, financier James Matthews, in a gorgeous ceremony in Berkshire, England, on May 20, 2017. While details were initially scarce, we've learned a few fascinating details now that it's been three years since their nuptials. Read on to see what they are.

  1. Pippa received a royal title after tying the knot. While she didn't become a duchess like her older sister, Pippa is now able to use the courtesy title of Mrs. Matthews of Glen Affric the younger. James is heir to the Scottish title of Laird of Glen Affric (a position his father currently holds), and once his dad dies, he will become the Laird of Glen Affric, making Pippa the Lady Glen Affric.
  2. Pippa and James left their ceremony in a super-rare car. After the ceremony, the happy couple drove away in a Jaguar E-Type sports car. According to Pippa's uncle Gary Goldsmith, it was the first one ever made.
  3. Pippa stuck to tradition and wore something old. Pippa sported the same Robinson Pelham pear-cut diamond drop earrings she wore to Kate and Prince William's wedding back in 2011.
  4. Pippa and James's wedding party included a reality TV star. James's younger brother, Spencer, who starred on the British reality show Made in Chelsea, served as his best man. Prince George acted as one of the page boys, along with Casimir Tatos, Edward Sebire, and William Ward, while Princess Charlotte served as one of the flower girls with Countess Philippa Hoyos, Lily French, and Avia Horner.
  5. Pippa followed in her sister's footsteps. Like Kate, Pippa read more modern vows, omitting the word "obey" from them.
  6. The reception took place inside a glass palace in Pippa's parents' backyard. Not only did the glass palace take three days to build, but it reportedly cost $100,000.
  7. There was a Beatles tribute. Guests reportedly broke out into a Beatles sing-along during Spencer's best man speech.
  8. Guests reportedly had to use secret passwords to get into the reception. Following the ceremony, the 350 guests made their way to Bucklebury Village Hall, where they parked their cars and men were offered fresh shirts if they wanted to change from their ceremony attire. They were then driven to the Middletons' estate, but not before each guest had their photo ID checked and gave a password, which was different for each attendee.
  9. There was a special Supermarine Spitfire performance. The crowd was treated to an acrobatic aerial performance by a British single-seat fighter used in World War II.
  10. Kate added her personal touch. According to E!, the duchess herself drew a picture of the church on the wedding programs.

Roselyn Sanchez, Carlos Ponce, and More Latinx Celebs Rally to Support Immigrant Families’ Mental Health

More than a dozen of the biggest Latinx stars in Hollywood are teaming up with Seneca Family of Agencies to connect reunified immigrant families with free and confidential mental health services. The initiative, called "Todo Por Mi Familia" is aimed at families affected by this administration's "zero tolerance" policy, which separated them at the border.

Roselyn Sánchez, Cristián de la Fuente, Carlos Ponce, Chelsea Rendon, Bianca de la Garza, and former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres, are just some of the big names lending their voices and starring in bilingual PSAs for the campaign during Mental Health Awareness Month.

In their messages, the celebs explain that Seneca Family of Agencies is a national California-based nonprofit that has been coordinating free mental health services - including counseling - for reunified immigrant parents and children across the country who were affected by family separation. They encourage the viewers to call the confidential and toll-free number 844-529-3327 for more information.

Mental health screenings and treatment for immigrant parents and children separated at the Mexican border became mandatory after a historic ruling last November by US District Judge John A. Kronstadt of California. He explained that there was evidence that family separations caused "severe mental trauma to parents and their children."

Judge Kronstadt found that the federal government's family separation policy placed thousands of families in danger, and that "the trauma they experienced will cause irreparable injury unless they are provided with immediate care."

Seneca will be connecting reunified families to mental health services at community-based organizations across the country.
