Why Hoop Earrings Mean So Much to Me as a Latina

I was probably less than a year old the first time I wore hoop earrings. In fact, mami had my ears pierced by my pediatrician only months after I was born. She decorated them with pretty diamond studs, then eventually I graduated to small hoop earrings.

Mami had a few pairs herself, and I remember being in my pre-teens trying them on in the mirror and loving how they framed my face, brought out my sculpted jawline, and instantly added edge to my look. I felt pretty, I felt womanly, and I felt like I looked "really Latina" - whatever that meant.

But it actually makes sense if you really think about it. Latinas have been adorning their ears with hoops for centuries. It's part of our culture as a result of our African ancestry. My mom wore them, my older cousin Liza wore them, and many of my favorite artists like Selena Quintanilla, the ladies from TLC, and Jennifer Lopez wore them.

Putting on a pair of hoops filled me with confidence and pride.

Putting on a pair of hoops filled me with confidence and pride. Those heavy earrings, though, eventually started to take a toll on my delicate little ears.

In fifth grade, my left earlobe ripped from constantly wearing hoops and hanging earrings, and from forgetting to take them off before bed. A plastic surgeon had to stitch it back up. The surgery itself is referred to as earlobe repair surgery, and it's actually more common than you'd think, especially among women of color.

I went at least one full year without wearing anything but stud earrings, but eventually hoops were back in my life again. Once I started college, though, I put all my hoop earrings away again after hearing comments not just from white people but even by POCs themselves that referred to hoops as "hood" or "ghetto."

I didn't want to go into college being stereotyped as this "spicy" and "ghetto" Latina, and the pride I felt whenever I wore hoop earrings now turned into shame. Looking back, I'm sad I allowed myself to conform to what white society told me was stylish and acceptable.

I put all my hoop earrings away after hearing comments not just from white people - but even by POCs themselves - that referred to them as "hood" or "ghetto."

My left ear eventually ripped again my senior year of college, and after getting surgery the second time around, I told myself I was never going to re-pierce my ears again. However, I'd find myself occasionally craving earrings and would go on long internet hunts to find decent clip-ons.

I'll never forget the first time I found myself a pair of hoop clip-on earrings. I loved the way they made my face look but I retired them for a while after my boyfriend at the time expressed he didn't like them because they made me look like "Johanna from the Block." That was it. No more hoop earrings for me. I was going to pursue a career in journalism now. I needed to be taken seriously - not stereotyped.

My clip-on hoops days.

A lot has changed since my college days. For starters, WOC - Latinas included - have resisted the white beauty standards that have been pushed on us for centuries. We have reclaimed our pride and our beauty. And so many of us, regardless of age or occupation, proudly let our hoops dangle as we confidently stride down the street.

All the complejos I had when I was younger about being Latina and the fears I had about how white America viewed me have gone away. In fact, I proudly wear my Latiniad on my sleeve regardless of how uncomfortable it might make someone feel. So of course, it only makes sense that the time would be right for me to finally wear the hoop earrings I grew up wearing with so much pride.

I got my ears re-pierced in February, right before the pandemic really hit the US. I'm so glad I did because putting on a pair of hoops on my low days has really done a lot in terms of lifting my spirits. I feel beautiful, I feel proud, I feel like a badass Latina who can get through any obstacle that's placed in front of her. I love you hoops, and I'm just sorry I ever doubted your magic in the first place.

Lush Is Slowly Reopening Its Stores Across the US, and We Can Smell the Good News From Here

Just when we could all use a nice long bubble bath to melt away our stress, Lush has announced that it will begin to reopen its shops all across the US and Canada. With plans to reopen each store as safely and mindfully as possible on a case-by-case basis, the cosmetics company hopes to have all of its shops in North America up and running again by early July, according to a press release. So, yes, I will be restocking my lavender Sleepy cream ASAP.

"The road back to normality is bound to be a little uncertain as the world changes around us, but we're committed to safely and consciously starting afresh together."

In order to prioritize the health, well-being, safety, and comfort of its staff and customers, Lush has begun the reopening process with a phased roll-out of contactless pickup. Shops have also begun opening at reduced capacity, allowing customers to order products online and pick them up in-store. Continued phases of reopening will be based on current local government regulations, CDC recommendations, the establishment of cleanliness standards, the availability of supplies and training in shops, and local staff comfort with reopening.

Newly established health and safety protocols require that all Lush team members wear face masks, and that customers do the same. In addition, staff members will be required to wash their hands before assisting different customers and regularly sanitize surfaces throughout the shop, including the cash desk and debit terminal after each customer transaction. Customers will also have access to clean sinks and soap for requested handwashing upon entry, no purchase necessary, and all payment will be contactless. For everyone's safety, beauty demos will remain on hold and social-distancing markers will be placed six feet apart all through the shops.

If you prefer to minimize personal contact with others even further, contactless pickup is available at select locations, and new products will be made available if you are not comfortable purchasing an item that is on the shelves. Shop managers are also offering one-on-one online consultations for anyone seeking advice on bath, shower, and skin-care regimens. Spokesperson Elisa Torres said, "The road back to normality is bound to be a little uncertain as the world changes around us, but we're committed to safely and consciously starting afresh together."

Old Navy's $35 Stretchy Striped Blazer Is Finally Back in Stock - See How Women Are Wearing It

Classic Breton stripes are always a good idea. The simple sailor-like striped pattern looks adorable on T-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and even blazers, and right now, Old Navy has a perennial bestseller that we're making room for in our closet. It's made of a soft ponte-knit rayon and nylon blend with some added stretch, which means you can scrunch up the sleeves to your heart's content without sacrificing comfort. (We hate when blazers are too stiff to even roll up the sleeves.)

The Pinstriped Ponte-Knit Blazer ($38, originally $45) blazer is easy to incorporate into any existing wardrobe. You can throw it on over jeans and a simple white T-shirt or even an everyday dress. The blazer has been a bestseller and routinely sells out, but it's back in stock right now, so don't delay! We're all about simple outfit upgrades, and this one is a smart buy. See how other women wear striped blazers if you need some styling inspiration.

People Are Making Croissant Bites Stuffed With Nutella Because Breakfast Is Best Served Sweet

I don't have any kind of culinary degree, but my inner pastry chef is flipping her toque over these mini croissant bites stuffed with Nutella. Originally posted by Sam Schnur, aka thenaughtyfork on Instagram, the croissant cereal is inspired by TikTok's cookie cereal trend and it's just as easy to make. So catch me munching on a bowl of this during my next Zoom call or while I'm catching up on all of Dead to Me.

In the video shared to her channel, Sam takes pre-cut pastry dough triangles and slices them into even smaller triangles. She then adds about one teaspoon of Nutella to the widest section of the dough before rolling each triangle into a mini croissant. After a few minutes in the over, per the package instructions, each of the teeny tiny croissants is ready to be thrown into a bowl and served up with milk or an extra drizzle of the chocolate hazelnut spread. See how Sam makes regular and Nutella-stuffed mini croissants here, and keep reading to treat your eyeballs to something sweet.

I Have Depression and Anxiety, and COVID-19 Has Taken an Emotional Toll

Taking care of your mental health should always be a priority, but for me and I suspect many others, it's been especially challenging during the coronavirus outbreak. As someone with anxiety and depression, I already struggle with day-to-day activities, but the loss of normalcy, increased social isolation, and seemingly endless amount of uncertainty has only made things worse.

As a college student, I was forced to leave my apartment and return home for the remainder of the semester, as classes transitioned to online learning. I don't do well with change, good or bad, so these abrupt transitions were emotionally draining. All I wanted to do was attend classes in person, go out to bars and restaurants, see a movie, or shop - or even just spend some time in my own space. Yet, every day I woke up in my family's house, resisting the life I had been thrown into.

I began to live on autopilot. Although I woke up, got dressed, ate, attended my virtual classes, and did my homework every day, I never emotionally invested in any of these routine tasks. I didn't make any real decisions, including what I ate, watched on TV, or wore. I also never stopped to consider how I was feeling because that meant acknowledging - and eventually accepting - this new normal. And although every day was filled with the same repetitive tasks, I could never remember what I actually did, which only made me feel guilty and worthless.

Though I knew it was important, staying at home didn't help my mental health, either. For a long time, it was too cold to even venture outside to unwind or get some exercise. The loneliness of social distancing was equally suffocating. I dreamt of hanging out with friends - and although I could still communicate with them, there's something about face-to-face interaction that's much more satisfying. I've always preferred talking to someone in person, rather than through texts, calls, or video chats. As a result, I began to withdraw and was slow to respond to people's messages, when that had never really been a problem before.

I started to feel disconnected from the world around me, like a passenger in my own life.

I started to feel disconnected from the world around me, like a passenger in my own life. It was as though all the energy had been sucked out of me, and I couldn't focus on anything. I even started to question what I was doing with my life, when so many of the things I once enjoyed suddenly felt fake and unnatural. I was trapped in a haze, and I didn't know how to escape.

Although I never feared getting COVID-19, I was - and still am - afraid of what life will look like after the pandemic. Will the fear of others linger? How many more people will be laid off from their jobs? How long will we have to wear masks everywhere we go? Will offices and classrooms ever return to normal? Life as we know it has undeniably changed, but nobody knows just how significantly yet, and that scares me. This uncertainty caused me to spend countless nights overthinking every little thing, imagining worst case scenarios of the new normal, even though I knew doing so would accomplish nothing.

If this pandemic has taught me anything, it's how damaging the loss of routine, seclusion, and stress about the future can be. I wish I could tell you that things will get better tomorrow or next week or next month, but no one can know for sure. What I can tell you is that, if you're struggling to comfortably settle into this new normal, you're not alone. All we can do is try not to let the fear and anxiety consume us as we learn to navigate what comes next.

This Museum's New Virtual Exhibit Was Shot Entirely With an iPhone, and the Photos Are Stunning

Given today's shelter-in-place environment, we have all shifted the way we work, especially in the world of entertainment and the creative arts. Technology has become our greatest ally in keeping us together while apart, as well as provided innovative ways for us to continue creating. A great example of this is the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá (MAMBO's) new virtual photographic exhibition called "Ciudades Durmientes" (Sleeping Cities), which brought together six of the best Latin American photographers from all over the world, and challenged them to capture their new reality through the lens of an iPhone.

This exhibition, which was also edited entirely via iPhone, is available for the next few weeks through MAMBO's website and social media channels. It features photographers Andrés Oyuela (Colombian, photos of NYC), Gerardo Sandoval (Mexican, photos of Mexico City), Marcelo Auge (Brazilian, photos of São Paulo), Alberto Ferreras (Venezuelan, photos of NYC), Chino Lemus (Mexican, photos of Mexico City), and David Micolta (Colombian, photos of Bogotá).

According to the museum, this exhibit is "a reflection of the ongoing pandemic through the lens of six great national and international photographers." Their work represents the beauty and intimacy of monuments, buildings, streets, parks, and everyday atmospheres. Keep scrolling to get a sneak peek of the exhibit, which is now live and available for all to enjoy.

Khloé Kardashian's Skin Is Glowing In These Minimal-Makeup Selfies

We love seeing celebrities without makeup just as much as the next person, but it's pretty rare to catch any one of the Kardashians when they're not in full glam. Still, there have been a handful of times when the reality star and Good American founder has allowed us the opportunity to see her when she's relaxing and not wearing a full face of makeup, like when she's traveling or documenting a workout session.

Kardashian's minimal-makeup selfies are few and far between, but read ahead to see a few times when she's pared down her look for the 'gram.

I'm Bringing My Kids' Favorite Camp Activities Home Because They Deserve a Little Fun

This school year has been such a wild ride with classes being cancelled abruptly in March and no clear indication of when they'll resume again. As we get ready for summer vacation to start, it's hard to feel excited about being home when that's literally all that we have been doing for months now. I wish I could be doing our normal prep for summer vacation right now, which always included researching different camps with the kids, syncing up schedules with their friends and delving into the different topics for the boys to explore over the summer. But with the pandemic rates continuing to rise in Texas where we live, my family is making the hard choice to sit out camps this year.

However, just because summer camps with friends is not a possibility, that doesn't mean that summer is cancelled. I know that my family is going to be in this social distancing routine for the long haul, so I decided that we're going to bring all the summer camp fun home instead. The key is that I'm not trying to compete with my children's amazing memories of the years past. I'm going to instead work on making this summer exactly as unique as this entire situation has been, while exploring the summer camp activities they've always looked forward to.

Both my boys love swimming and we've done swim camps the past several years, which brings them so much joy. I really haven't ever missed not having my own swimming pool in our backyard - until this year. Since I knew we wouldn't be able to do swim camp, I did the next best thing. I ordered an above-the-ground inflatable pool for our backyard that's large enough to accommodate my whole family (and then some). Measuring in at 18 feet by 4 feet, it's been the best few hundred bucks I've spent this year and the joy it's brought the kids has been immeasurable! Once June begins, I'll start them on a morning routine with drills and laps just like they would have at camp.

Another thing my kids love about summer camps is diving into fun topics they're really obsessed with. In the past, they've done themed camps like a Harry Potter wizard camp, a Roblox coding camp, and cooking camp. My 6-year-old is currently obsessed with becoming a scientist when he gets older, so for him, we're doing a Little Passports Science Junior camp in a box this year. The box will provide a few hours of daily activities for a week and is a great replacement for the camp we won't be able to join this year. I'm looking forward to a guided week of science-related activities - I'm sure I'll learn something too!

The kids have always loved camping over the summer months and though we likely will be staying home this year, I'm going to be putting together a wonderful backyard camp site every few weeks. It's super easy to set up your own little tent (or fort with comforters!) and roast marshmallows for a few hours. Even if we don't end up spending the entire night outdoors, the act of preparing and setting up the activity will do wonders for their spirits. Plus, we may even do a small fire pit and put up some Christmas lights for the ambiance.

Kids are pretty remarkable at doing hard things and it's never been more evident to me than during this social distancing period. By stretching my imagination a little, I know I can help make this summer memorable and fun for them even if we don't do any of the regular summer activities. It's important for my kids to enjoy their summer vacation. So I'm trying to recreate some of their fondest memories of summer camps, it also helps me feel like I have some control of this crazy situation. It'll be a different summer, but I know we'll make the best of it.

Cara Delevingne Is Releasing a Pride Collection With Puma, and Everything Is Under $50

It's safe to say I trust Cara Delevingne when it comes to style, so if she's sporting a chic 'fit, I'm definitely in. Cara, who's an LGBTQ+ activist, collaborated with Puma to create a 13-piece capsule collection to celebrate Pride Month.

The affordable pack features a fun waist bag, rainbow slides, and an assortment of colorful tees and hoodies that you can wear to support Pride Month and long after - and everything is priced between $20 and $45. But that's not the best part . . . Puma is donating 20 percent of the collection's proceeds to the Cara Delevingne Foundation, a part of the Giving Back Fund that supports LGBTQ+ charities including GLAAD, The Trevor Project, and Mind Out.

You can shop the majority of the collection on Puma.com starting June 1, with the exception of the slides, which will drop on June 28. Check out all 13 pieces, plus Cara's gorgeous campaign photos, below.

TikTok's Addison Rae Walks Kourtney Kardashian Through Her 6-Minute Booty Workout

Kourtney Kardashian's at-home workout routine includes some special (virtual) guests, like TikTok star Addison Rae. The 19-year-old dancer recently joined Kardashian for a Poosh YouTube video, and she shared her go-to booty-targeting moves that only take six minutes total.

"This will be a really fun workout," Rae said. "I've done this butt workout so many times because it literally burns so bad but it's so good." Kardashian replied, "I have such a good butt workout that I wanna see how yours is and then I feel like we should do another day where I show you mine."

Together, Kardashian and Rae made their way through donkey kicks, fire hydrants, and fire hydrant extensions on each leg. They followed these moves up with stretching (Kardashian made it a goal to learn the splits by age 40!) and planks. Watch the video above to see their full workout, and catch up on their conversation. Sounds like they'll be exercise buddies again soon!
