Has Your Acne Only Gotten Worse During Lockdown? 55% of People Are Reporting "Yes"
At first, Megha Kamath, 18, didn't notice her acne was flaring back up again. "I was caught up in the whole quarantine thing and freaking out over the pandemic," she told POPSUGAR. That much is fair. When something like the novel coronavirus effectively thwarts the lives of millions of people around the world, priorities shift, and taking care of your skin nosedives to the bottom of the list.
But a few weeks in, "I noticed it getting worse," Kamath said. "My initial reaction was, 'Oh my god, what am I doing?' I started trying to figure out what went wrong. Now, my current feeling is frustration because my acne hasn't gotten better. It was really bad two weeks ago, and so I started icing my face and using nicer products. I don't remember my skin ever being flawless or pimple-free, but before the lockdown, it was relatively clear. Now it's freaking out and breaking out, and it's just not fun."
In truth, and as anyone could attest, acne is never "fun" - and yet, the added stress, lack of sleep, and overall lifestyle change that has come with mandated stay-home orders for the past two-plus months have only heightened the experience. What's worse: Kamath is not even close to alone in the struggle.
According to a survey by market research firm Dynata for DeVries Global of 1,000 women across the US, more than 80 percent noticed an increase in one skin problem or another since COVID-19 hit. One in four say they're experiencing more acne, but that percentage bumps to 55 for those surveyed under 25. That's on top of the already 50 million people impacted by the skin condition year-round.
The statistics are somehow surprising and yet not at all - as are the obvious and not-so-obvious aggressors below - but one thing is for sure: no matter why, or when, or for how long this persists, we're all in it together.
The Biggest Acne Aggressors Right Now
To put it bluntly: the novel coronavirus has f*cked with everybody's lives, throwing off daily routines and schedules like a kid thrashing through the shelves of a candy store. That shift in your day-to-day can impact your skin in a number of ways, as you change everything from what you're eating to how much you're moving (and every little thing in between).
It could be that your skin is irritated by the face mask you're required to wear outside and during all appointments, or that you're taking too many damn Zoom meetings. Yep, dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, says sitting in front of a computer all day means you might be leaning on your hands or touching your face more often. "This can lead to skin irritation and inflammation, which promote acne breakouts."
As can eating too many sugary or starchy foods that increase blood sugar levels or adopting a new skin-care routine with heavy or occlusive ingredients, he said. Even the type of product could be too risky to use right now: several dermatologists have advised patients to stop taking the oral prescription spironolactone - often prescribed for hormonal acne - amid the pandemic, as data show it might increase the risk for infection.
Kamath, for example, suspects her recent breakouts could be the result of a multitude of things like boredom, a poor diet, and halted access to her dermatologist.
Then there's the stress. (Oh, how could we forget the stress?) The internal reaction it has on your body can trigger the stress hormone cortisol, which then revs up oil production on the skin and - you guessed it - leads to flare-ups. Still, even more so than the straightforward acne triggers people are dealing with right now are the equally common, but rarely talked about, ways your mental health plays a role.
The Psychological Impact of Acne During a Pandemic
Acne can be a sensitive subject for anyone in any given period, but the current physical-distancing measures can further catapult the feelings of isolation or stress.
"A person with acne might see an increased flare-up of acne with increased stress. It all depends on how someone perceives their acne and what belief system they carry about how other people perceive them."
"Dealing with COVID-19, many people will experience anxiety and depression," said Mina Guirguis, Psy.D., clinical psychologist and psychodermatologist. (It's more than just likely; in fact, a survey just released by the CDC and the Census Bureau of 260,000 people found that one in three Americans have reported feeling a strain on their mental health since April.) What that looks like, of course, depends on the individual.
"We know that stress impacts our body in many ways, often in a negative manner. A person with acne might see an increased flare-up of acne with increased stress. It all depends on how someone perceives their acne and what belief system they carry about how other people perceive them. If a person is struggling with having acne and develops anxiety or depression to having acne, this person's symptoms might decrease in intensity as they don't have to go out and meet other people, especially if they believe that other people are not accepting of their look or judge them in some fashion. Let's consider another person who is comfortable with having acne, being at home or not or using Zoom or not will not make a difference to them."
3 Things in Your Home That Could Be Causing Allergy Symptoms
Staying indoors to temper your seasonal-allergy symptoms is a realistic way to feel better throughout spring and early summer - just as long as the inside of your home is allergen-free, too.
If you're feeling unwavering congestion, sinus pressure, and headaches while inside, Dr. Purvi Parikh, MD, an allergist with Allergy & Asthma Network, wants you to know of three common triggers that could be present in your home.
And while her advice could have you one step closer to feeling better, she urges you to see a board-certified allergist, too, in order to help further decrease the severity of your symptoms.
Dust Mites
Dust mites - although too small to see without a microscope - are part of the tick and spider family and thrive in warm, humid environments, Mayo Clinic reports.
Despite their size, they could be the reason you're experiencing allergy-like symptoms such as hay fever, headaches, sneezing, runny nose, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.
That's why Dr. Parikh suggests frequently vacuuming, removing carpets and rugs, and covering your mattress and box spring with dust-mite covers, as these are where dust mites are most commonly found in homes.
Mold
"If you have water damage or leaks in your home and are allergic to mold, this could be a potential trigger," Dr. Parikh admits.
She recommends installing a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter in your home and removing any mold damage that could have accumulated over time.
Having a dehumidifier, changing the filters in your furnace, removing carpets from bathrooms and basements, recycling old books and newspapers, and keeping organic plant containers clean and dry can help prevent coughing, itchy eyes, and enhanced asthma symptoms, too.
Animal Dander
As much as pet lovers hate to admit it, cats and dogs are known to trigger allergies, as well.
An animal's urine, saliva, and sweat (that includes rodents and rabbits, too) can all spark allergy symptoms, but dander (also known as skin cells shed by animals) is particularly a problem because it remains airborne for long periods and collects in upholstered furniture and clothing. This can all lead to sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, facial pressure, coughing, swollen eyes, and frequent awakening.
Keeping your furry friends out of the bedroom as much as possible and using an air purifier could help you lessen allergy symptoms, Dr. Parikh says.

Embrace Lighter Weights
Just because you're aiming for lower rep counts doesn't mean you should up your weight.
Rogers encourages you to do the opposite actually - focus on small, controlled movements with low weight or no hand weight at all.
This combination helps create long, lean muscles.
Find Your True Challenge Zone
It's great to challenge yourself, but Rogers doesn't want you to push beyond that zone or your ideal range of motion - proper alignment and placement during each move is going to help keep you safe from injuries.
She uses the popular Pilates move "the hundred" as an example: "If your legs are too low to the floor, you might be losing your navel-to-spine connection, which in turn strains your hip flexor and does not keep your abdominals fully engaged."

4 Morning Stretches to Combat Work-From-Home Body Stiffness
That peaceful moment when your coffee is brewing and your toast is browning is the perfect time to combat some of the work-from-home joint pain or stiffness that comes with swapping your office chair for a sectional.
Before clocking in from the couch, get ahead of your tight shoulders and back with some morning stretches.
No brainpower is required, as you obviously haven't sipped your caffeine yet. Dani Singer, a NASM-certified personal trainer and CEO of Fit2Go, has the exact stretch sequence handled.
Just follow his step-by-step stretching instructions below.
Sit and Reach
When we're sitting all day, our hamstrings are constantly in a contracted position, leading to a tight lower back and legs. Singer explained that this is what can make it feel difficult to bend down and pick things up.
- Sit on the floor with your left leg extended in front of you. Bend your right knee to the side and place your right foot against your left inner thigh.
- Take a deep breath in and then slowly let it out as you reach both hands toward your left toes and hold. If you can't reach your toes, grab your shin instead.
- Hold this position for 10 full breaths, taking five seconds for each exhale.
Doorway Stretch
The first step in fixing your posture - which can be negatively impacted by hunching over your computer - is loosening your tight chest, Singer noted.
- Stand in a doorway and place your right arm on the frame beside you. Keep the elbow bent at 90 degrees.
- Lean into the stretch by stepping forward through the doorway with your arm staying in place on the door frame. You should feel a nice stretch across your chest, as the wall pulls your torso into an upright posture.
- Hold for 10 full breaths, taking five seconds for each exhale.
- Switch sides and repeat.
Neck Release
According to Singer, our necks are constantly tight from hunching over our computers and phones, which can further lead to jaw pain and headaches. Relieve some of that tension with this simple stretch.
- Tilt your head toward your right shoulder.
- Rotate your neck to the left to look up toward the ceiling.
- Gently pull your head further toward your right shoulder using your right hand.
- While maintaining that gentle pull, rotate your neck to look down toward the floor.
- Do five rotations, looking at the ceiling and then the floor. Breathe deeply and slowly while you move.
- Release and repeat on the other side.

Your butt muscles are meant to be used daily. Thanks to chairs, we limit our own range of motion, leading to a tight and weak rear end. Singer added that this is a common cause of hip, back, and knee pain.

- Hold for 10 full breaths, taking five seconds for each exhale.

Beyoncé Wrote a Letter to Kentucky's Attorney General Demanding Justice For Breonna Taylor

Beyoncé is demanding justice for Breonna Taylor in a way that's easy to replicate. On June 14, the singer shared an open letter to Attorney General Daniel Cameron on her website. In the message, she asked for "swift and decisive action" to be taken on Breonna's behalf, specifically, that charges be brought against the Louisville officers involved with Breonna's death.
"Three months have passed - and the LMPD's investigations have created more questions than answers," Beyoncé wrote. "Their incident report states that Ms. Taylor suffered no injuries - yet we know she was shot at least eight times. The LMPD officers claim they announced themselves before forcing their way into Ms. Taylor's apartment - but her boyfriend who was with her, as well as several neighbors, all say that this is untrue."
"Don't let this case fall into the pattern of no action after a terrible tragedy."
She continued, "Three months have passed - and zero arrests have been made, and no officers have been fired. The LMPD's investigation was turned over to your office, and yet all of the officers involved in the shooting remain employed by the LMPD. Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Officers Myles Cosgrove and Brett Hankison must be held accountable for their actions."
"Three months have passed - and Breonna Taylor's family still waits for justice. Ms. Taylor's family has not been able to take time to process and grieve. Instead, they have been working tirelessly to rally the support of friends, their community, and the country to obtain justice for Breonna."
Beyoncé urged the Attorney General to take three clear steps to honor Breonna: bring criminal charges against the three officers, commit to transparency in the investigation of their conduct, and investigate the LMPD's response to Breonna's murder. "Don't let this case fall into the pattern of no action after a terrible tragedy. With every death of a Black person at the hands of the police, there are two real tragedies: the death itself, and the inaction and delays that follow it," she wrote. "This is your chance to end that pattern. Take swift and decisive action in charging the officers. The next months cannot look like the last three."

Beyoncé Wrote a Letter to Kentucky's Attorney General Demanding Justice For Breonna Taylor

Beyoncé is demanding justice for Breonna Taylor in a way that's easy to replicate. On June 14, the singer shared an open letter to Attorney General Daniel Cameron on her website. In the message, she asked for "swift and decisive action" to be taken on Breonna's behalf, specifically, that charges be brought against the Louisville officers involved with Breonna's death.
"Three months have passed - and the LMPD's investigations have created more questions than answers," Beyoncé wrote. "Their incident report states that Ms. Taylor suffered no injuries - yet we know she was shot at least eight times. The LMPD officers claim they announced themselves before forcing their way into Ms. Taylor's apartment - but her boyfriend who was with her, as well as several neighbors, all say that this is untrue."
"Don't let this case fall into the pattern of no action after a terrible tragedy."
She continued, "Three months have passed - and zero arrests have been made, and no officers have been fired. The LMPD's investigation was turned over to your office, and yet all of the officers involved in the shooting remain employed by the LMPD. Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Officers Myles Cosgrove and Brett Hankison must be held accountable for their actions."
"Three months have passed - and Breonna Taylor's family still waits for justice. Ms. Taylor's family has not been able to take time to process and grieve. Instead, they have been working tirelessly to rally the support of friends, their community, and the country to obtain justice for Breonna."
Beyoncé urged the Attorney General to take three clear steps to honor Breonna: bring criminal charges against the three officers, commit to transparency in the investigation of their conduct, and investigate the LMPD's response to Breonna's murder. "Don't let this case fall into the pattern of no action after a terrible tragedy. With every death of a Black person at the hands of the police, there are two real tragedies: the death itself, and the inaction and delays that follow it," she wrote. "This is your chance to end that pattern. Take swift and decisive action in charging the officers. The next months cannot look like the last three."

Meanwhile, some haven't even gotten the chance to kick off the ground, like Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid reboot and Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. I've Probably Owned 100+ Workout Leggings in My Life, and This $35 Pair Is My Favorite
I've told a number of people recently that I found the best workout tights with pockets. Sometimes using words like "best" and "perfect" can be tricky to justify when you're explaining an opinion, so I thought it would be important to break down what attributes of these tights earn them a favored title. I've been a runner, volleyball player, and overall gym rat my entire life, and if there's one thing I feel strongly about, it's the pockets.
I recently had an opportunity to test out the Old Navy High-Waisted Elevate Powersoft 7/8-Length Side-Pocket Leggings For Women ($35, originally $40) to see how the pair delivered, and I knew after my first workout this would be a pant I'd be buying time and time again.
They're incredibly easy to slide on and don't require additional tugging at the thigh or waistband in order to get them on the way other tights I own do. Even after a dozen washes, they remain the perfect balance of snug and malleable (they're 23-percent spandex!). The waistband is the perfect height, so if I want to work out in just a sports bra, I still feel somewhat modest and supported. And my absolute favorite aspect of these tights is, of course, the deep pockets. My iPhone, keys, and small zip wallet all fit inside the pockets and don't budge while running, which is no easy feat. I've done burpees and jumping jacks and gone on at least a dozen runs in them, and nothing has ever fallen out.
Lego Pulls Advertising For Police-Related Building Sets in Support of the Black Community

Lego is taking the events surrounding the killing of George Floyd seriously, and not just with a hefty donation.
On Wednesday, the toymaker announced on Twitter that it would donate $4 million in support of the Black community and pledged to send that money to "organizations dedicated to supporting Black children and educating all children about racial equality."

Lego added that "there is much to do," and to that end, the children's brick-building company went a step further.
In an email sent to online retailers that sell Lego sets, the company behind the Lego Movie franchise and Legoland theme parks requested that marketing for certain products be stopped and removed from commerce sites as soon as possible "in light of recent events." More than 30 products were listed in the email, and among them were ones that featured representation of police officers, firefighters, and criminals. Police and fire stations - as well as emergency vehicles like patrol cars and helicopters - were listed, as were mini figures in city police vests and the White House. The email didn't specify how long the products should not be promoted.
Following confusion from sellers, a Lego spokesperson clarified in a statement to CNBC that they "have not removed any sets from sale" and have no plans to halt production of the ones listed.
"The intent of the email was to ask that [members of Lego's affiliate marketing program] pause promoting and marketing a selection of Lego products on their sites. We paused all marketing across our own social channels earlier this week in response to the tragic events in the US."
It's a bold move for any toy company, but the Lego spokesperson made clear the brand's goal: "There is no place for racism in our society . . . Our mission is to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow and that includes inspiring them to be tolerant, inclusive, and kind."
A 9-Year-Old Couldn't Relate to Characters in Books, So She Created a Diverse Online Bookstore

On Saturday, the 41-year-old singer appeared on YouTube's "Bear Witness, Take Action" event - which united Black activists, leaders, and creators - to perform a cover of Bob Marley's 1980 hit "Redemption Song." Legend beautifully crooned about liberation and emancipation while playing the piano from his home. "Won't you help to sing / These songs of freedom? / 'Cause all I ever have / Redemption songs," he belted.
The virtual gathering, hosted by Common and Keke Palmer, featured roundtable discussions and panels about racism and the nuances of the Black experience. Guests included Sterling K. Brown, mental health advocate Jouelzy, artist Patrisse Cullors, writer Roxane Gay, and more. The live stream raised over $1 million for the Equal Justice Initiative, which helps to implement social justice through efforts aimed at ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment, as well as leveling racial and economic inequities. Russell Wilson isn't afraid to step into the hairdresser role. In a heartwarming video Ciara shared to Instagram on June 7, we see Russell singing along to a religious tune while doing his 3-year-old daughter Sienna's hair. This 60-Minute CrossFit Home Workout Is Guaranteed to Make You Strong and Sweaty!
If you're itching to do a longer workout to up your fitness game or because it's the weekend and you finally have some free time, here's a 60-minute CrossFit home workout you can bust through. What's great about this workout is that it includes eight different basic CrossFit moves, but you do them in a random order (chosen by a random generator), keeping your mind and your muscles guessing. Jade Jenny, head CrossFit coach and owner of Champlain Valley CrossFit, chose eight basic bodyweight and dumbbell moves like plank holds and chest presses you can do with minimal equipment.
This is an EMOM workout (every minute on the minute), but since it's 60 minutes, Jenny simplified the structure of the workout by having us repeat each exercise for two minutes (so it's 30 rounds). I did this workout over Zoom with about 60 other members of my box, and by the 30-minute mark, I wanted to shut my laptop and call it a day. But seeing everyone struggling through deadlifts, lunges, and seemingly endless burpees, I felt inspired to push even harder! It also reminded me how much I miss my gym and made me fall in love with CrossFit all over again.
If you can't get to your gym or you love home workouts, give this 60-minute HIIT workout a try. You'll be sweaty, but knowing you're getting stronger will make you feel so good! As Jenny says before every workout, "Get after it!"

Directions: Before the workout, complete a five-minute dynamic warmup. This is a 60-minute workout, but do whatever you have time for, whether it's 20, 30, or 40 minutes. There will be eight different exercises in this workout, and they should be completed in the specific (yet random) order listed in the chart ahead. Repeat each movement twice (so for two minutes) before moving on to the next exercise. For each minute, complete as many proper reps as you can in 40 seconds, followed by a 20-second rest. Rep suggestions are listed below; beginners can do fewer reps, and more advanced athletes can go for higher reps.
After the workout, make time for this 10-minute stretching routine. Read on for a rundown of the exercises you'll be doing and directions on how to do each exercise.
