ChocQuibTown Use the Momentum of Their New Album to Get Vocal About Black Lives Matter

"From our house to the entire community," is how Colombia's most influential music group, ChocQuibTown, is positioning their sixth album ChocQuib House. The 11-track compilation is perfect to get everyone dancing and enjoying and it features the newly-released single "Vuelve."

"ChocQuib House is meant to help us get through the global health crisis," ChocQuibTown said in a press release. "Music is the best therapy and the best way to overcome hard times."

The 11 tracks include several recent smash hits like "Fresa," "Humano," "Que Me Baile" featuring Becky G, "Pa' Olvidarte," and fan-favorite "Pa' Olvidarte (Remix)" featuring Manuel Turizo, Zion & Lennox, and Farruko, which surpassed 105 million views on YouTube. Other important collaborations in this album feature Latin stars Dalex, Lyanno, and Rauw Alejandro.

ChocQuibTown is also using the attention around their album release to speak against racism and inequality, to show support for Black Lives Matter, and to denounce Afro-Colombians being treated as inferior people. This discrimination can include denying them admission to bars, restaurants, and clubs, because of the color of their skin, or take more subtle forms, like judging their behavior as "threatening."

The group has been vocal about seeking justice for Anderson Arboleda, a 24-year-old Black man who was killed by the police in their home country for being outside during a national curfew. "Police officers: we know there are a lot of intelligent and respectful people working with you, but we also know that it's necessary to educate in anti-racist conducts," they wrote on an Instagram post. "We need to be treated as individuals, as humans, with respect."

White Claw Pizza Is a Thing, But It's Only Available For One Day at Blaze Pizza

Whether it's alcoholic slushies or low-calorie flavors, I'm always game for a White Claw spin-off. And while White Claw pizza wasn't exactly at the top of my wish list, I wouldn't completely rule out the new limited-edition offering available at Blaze Pizza locations nationwide.

What exactly is White Claw pizza, you might be wondering? Well, according to a rep from Blaze Pizza, the restaurant's executive chef Brad Kent has adapted the pizza crust to add mango-flavored White Claw, which replaces filtered water in his fresh dough recipe. Kit Kat's newest flavor lets you enjoy all the fruity goodness of a freshly-baked apple pie minus the fork, and my tastebuds are highly intrigued. Dessert is a must in my household, but turning on the oven to bake up a homemade dessert in the middle of summer doesn't always sound ideal, so please excuse me while I scribble "pie-flavored Kit Kats" (x10) onto my shopping list.

Jesse & Joy’s New Song Advocates For LGBTQ+ Youth With a Powerful Message

Jesse & Joy got 198 of their closest friends to appear in their new video "Love (Es Nuestro Idioma)." This song aims to raise awareness on the violence the LGBTQ+ community is subjected to not only in Mexico, but around the world, and educating people on the importance of eliminating conversion therapies.

In the video we see different personalities sing along with the anthem and proclaim that "Love is our language" in colorful attire that represents all the colors of the rainbow. Alejandro Sanz, Mau y Ricky, Ángela Aguilar, Danna Paola, Eugenio Dérbez, Fonseca, Galilea Montijo, Juanes, Juanpa Zurita, Kany García, Llane, Laura Pausini, Luis Fonsi, Maite Perroni, Mon Laferte, Monserrat Oliver, Natalia Jiménez, Pipe Bueno, Rommel Pacheco, Sebastián Ruli, Sofía Reyes, Thalía, Tommy Torres, Vadhir Dérbez, Vanesa Martin, and many more became a part of this call to action, and are continuing to share the message with the hashtag #LoveEsNuestroIdioma.

"Sexual orientation is not something that you can or have to cure," a message reads toward the end of the video. "'Conversion therapies' subject people to different acts of torture like denying their freedom, electroshocks, corrective violations, and exorcisms, among others."

A second message follows, revealing that 4 out of 10 youths acknowledged they live in a hostile environment where they're forced to deny their gender identity and sexual orientation because their families want them to meet "social expectations," and are forced to go through conversion therapies.

The video ends by offering resources in Mexico for people of sexual diversity who might be looking for help. Jesse & Joy also teamed up with the United Nations Office of Drug and Crime (UNODC) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) to make this video possible and push the conversation forward.

The profits from this video will be donated to the Yaaj Mexico Foundation, for the continuity of their social work in Mexico, and for their labor supporting young victims of sexual violence.

How to Stay Safe at the Gym During COVID-19, According to Infectious Disease Experts

As cities and states continue to reopen, many people now have the option of returning to the gym. But it's important to remember that the spread of the novel coronavirus isn't over and, like every other business you visit, you should proceed with caution in order to stay safe at the gym during COVID-19. Regardless of the policies put in place by your particular gym, infectious disease experts say you should take the following steps to be as safe as possible during your workouts.

1. Make Sure the Equipment Has Been Properly Cleaned

It's more important than ever for machines and weights to be wiped down between uses and deep cleaned after hours. So, "have a conversation with the gym about its new cleaning policy," Amber Noon, MD, an infectious disease physician at Centura Health in Colorado, told POPSUGAR. Specifically, ask for information about what products they're using to clean the equipment and cross-check them against the list of EPA-approved disinfectants.

But it's more than just the cleaning product itself. "Ask how long they let the product sit before wiping it off," said Dr. Noon, noting that disinfectants can take up to 10 minutes to be effective.

If your gym doesn't have staff in place to clean pieces of equipment between patrons, you might also bring your own bottle of spray to disinfect machines before you use them - but again, you should give the product 10 minutes to work its magic. "In a gym environment where equipment is in demand, it could feel rude to spray something down and stand idle for 10 minutes," Dr. Noon said. However, she noted that if you're feeling stressed, rushed, or uncomfortable, you may want to ask yourself if it's a good time to be at the gym.

2. Practice Social Distancing

Your gym should space machines out so they're six feet apart - but if you're concerned that there's not enough distance between them, you may try coming at a time when you can leave a machine or two between you and the next person. "This is critical because folks working out vigorously aren't going to have masks on, most likely," Dr. Noon said.

Anthony Barile, MD, infectious disease medical director at Health First in Florida, explained that not all gyms will have processes in place to help visitors maintain social distancing. If that's the case, Dr. Barile said you should do your best to ensure you're staying six feet from others. "You can go to the gym outside of peak hours, make sure you're not using the machine right next to someone else, or visit a less crowded location," he suggested. "By maintaining a six-foot distance from others, you're limiting opportunities for the virus to spread."

3. Bring Your Own Supplies

Both experts recommend bringing as many of your own supplies as possible, from hand sanitizer to yoga mats. Towels and water bottles are particularly important. Dr. Barile explained that bringing your own towel ensures you're not using one that's contaminated, and having your own water bottle means you won't have to touch a shared water fountain. Just remember to clean everything well after leaving the gym.

4. Don't Attend a Class With More Than 10 People

Dr. Noon emphasized the importance of monitoring class sizes. Stick with groups of 10 or less, and when you're in class, make sure you have at least a six-foot radius around you - the more space, the better. Many gyms will likely require advance registration for classes, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they'll opt to cap class sizes. Before attending a class, ask your gym about the rules they have in place. If they're allowing more than 10 people in class at once, it's best to sit it out. "The risk of contracting coronavirus goes up with the larger group sizes," Dr. Noon said.

5. Don't Bring or Use Gloves

Because gloves are often misused and can lead to cross contamination, Dr. Noon advises against using them at the gym. She said the best, safest bet is to thoroughly clean the equipment you use, apply hand sanitizer after each use, and wash your hands well after working out.

6. Wear a Mask When It's Safe

Make sure that you're wearing a mask in common areas before and after your workout, and don't take it off until you've exited the gym entirely. For safety reasons, it's best to rely on social distancing during aerobic workouts - but if you're doing yoga, Pilates, or a lower-intensity workout that won't elevate your heart rate or cause you to breathe heavily, Dr. Noon suggests keeping your mask on.

She also noted that, unless they're working out vigorously alongside you, all gym staff should wear masks. "For all the reasons we're wearing masks in general, you want these people to honor the benefits to public health," she said. If they're not, insist on it.

The Bottom Line

Dr. Noon said that if you take the above precautions, you're probably safe at the gym - but it isn't without risk. She recommends making individualized choices based on your specific situation. For example, if you're in a high-risk group or you live or work with someone in a high-risk population, you'll want to take that into account when deciding whether or not to return to the gym.

The safest way to get your exercise remains outdoors, according to Dr. Noon. She recommends looking into organizations that are offering outdoor activities like yoga classes. Similarly, Dr. Barile stressed that COVID-19 remains prevalent even though states are reopening. If you notice that your gym isn't taking the necessary precautions, he said working out at home or outdoors is still an effective and safer alternative.

This Regal Photo Shoot Reimagines Disney Princesses With a "Twist of Black Girl Magic"

LaChanda Gatson didn't see herself in fairy-tale princesses growing up, so she decided to rewrite the story. The hairstylist teamed up with CreativeSoul Photography to bring a new royal Disney dream to life, this time with young Black girls at the center of the narrative. The result? An absolutely stunning series.

This whimsical photoshoot is a special "passion project" of LaChanda's. "These princesses are a collection princess classic reimagined with a twist of Black girl magic," she told POPSUGAR. The series draws inspiration from familiar tales, like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Frozen, and more. LaChanda enlisted the help of costume designers from across the globe - from Los Angeles to Nigeria - to create outfits worthy of royalty. The revamped princesses, she explained, are everything she would love to have seen growing up. "They are here to show diversity in fantasy and imagination," she said.

"None of my favorite enchanting fairytales had characters that look like me. I would always reimagine what it would be like in a more relatable way."

"When I was growing up I saw very little to no representation on television, movie, or books," LaChanda said. "None of my favorite enchanting fairy-tales had characters that look like me. I would always reimagine what it would be like in a more relatable way. As an adult I've been hired on many sets in Hollywood in both film and editorial for children, and to no surprise it's the same. Not much fantasy in that."

"It was then that I created the change [that] I want to see," she continued. "I want to continue to create and develop spaces for inclusivity. I inspire to create more conversation of filling those huge gaps."

True to her word, LaChanda has more projects in place to follow this photo shoot. She's working on a pop-up exhibit that will be an "exhibition of royal urban fantasy" featuring "spectacular whimsical Black designs, majestic swag, Afro art, and a host [of] celebrity royals." In the meantime, she hopes her art helps young people of color see themselves "in a brighter light with endless possibilities."

"They need to know that they are too beautiful, talented, gifted, hold ancestral gifts, powerful, and just as deserving of a happily ever after."

Laverne Cox on SCOTUS Ruling For LGBTQ+ Worker Protection: "This Is Just the Beginning"

On Monday, June 15, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 - which prohibits sex discrimination in the workplace - includes LGBTQ+ employees. Following the ruling, Laverne Cox opened up about the importance of the historic agreement and explained that the new court decision is just a stepping stone toward long-term societal and interpersonal change.

"This Supreme Court victory is huge but it doesn't bring these people back," Laverne told ET. "It doesn't change the hearts and minds of our fellow citizens who are murdering us and discriminating us around race, gender and sexual orientation. We have to look inside ourselves and ask how do I internalize the value systems that devalue the lives of trans people and black people... Then, when we change policies, it can stick and it will mean something because the hearts and minds have also changed."

Laverne went on to thank the late Aimee Stephens, a transgender woman whose lawsuit against a former employer was the impetus for the Supreme Court case and recent ruling. "She is dead now. But she is affirmed!" Laverne said. The Orange Is the New Black star also addressed the movement in support of Black transgender lives across the country, citing recent activism in Brooklyn and LA as progress. "That is the result of years of activism," she said. "Result of countless lives of black trans women, LGBT people of color, being taken away from us by the state and fellow citizens. This is just the beginning."

The documentary, executive produced by Laverne, will discuss the evolution of transgender representation throughout cinematic history and will feature interviews with Laverne, Mj Rodriguez, and more. When social distancing was enforced, I frantically called my dad to figure out what to do. Calling him when faced with an important life decision is something I always do, and it's my way of including him in my life as much as I can, even when we live 1,560 miles apart.

My dad, as the overly cautious man he is, told me to stay put. At the time, we didn't know if lockdown would mean two weeks or two months, and all countries were operating on different timelines, so if I traveled to Dominican Republic to isolate with my parents, there was no way of knowing how long I'd stay there. What if NYC reopened and I was called back into my office, he worried, but I couldn't go because I was stuck in the DR with airports closed? He didn't want that to happen because not being able to show up at work "would look bad" on me.

That's my dad. Always thinking ahead, making sure that whatever the outcome is, his kids are always set up for success. Often in Latinx cultures, we tend to highlight how important our mothers are, but in so many cases our dads are also there, too, pushing and encouraging us behind the scenes, working hard to set a good example, and saying the things we need to hear at the right time.

Many Latino dads are so loving, and this is something we don't often see portrayed in popular culture. We often see the outdated machismo stereotype, showing dads that are incapable of expressing their love, when for many of us, every little thing our dads do is a reflection of their love for their children.

Even though my dad told me to stay in NYC during the pandemic, he'd still call every single day. He would ask about my day, about the news, how I was doing, how my dog was doing. Even if it was a two-minute conversation, he'd always make himself present. I checked in on him, too - I'd ask about how he was adapting to working from home, since that was something completely new for him and an area in which I had more experience.

We got comfortable doing video calls, sharing stories and even shows to watch. As we ended our calls, he'd say "no salgas!" ("don't go out!") followed by "y si tienes que salir, usa tu mascarilla" ("if you have to go out, wear your face mask"). While we were already used to the physical distance between us, we always knew when we'd see each other next, which gave us something to look forward to. Not knowing when that would be made us hold onto the little interactions we had virtually, and in a way, it helped strengthen our bond.

This has been a learning and adapting experience for all, yet my dad makes it seem so easy. Whenever we talk it's as if he's discovered something new that day, or he realized he could do something he didn't think was possible. Talking to my dad through this quarantine period has been such a joy. I don't know if he does it on purpose to keep me distracted from everything that's happening in the world, but it makes my day.

My Fiancé and I Committed to 30 Days of Instagram Workouts, and It Seriously Paid Off

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was a fitness class fanatic. When my state went under a stay-at-home order and all my beloved fitness studios closed their doors, I was a bit panicked. I've never been interested in at-home workouts, and worried that I wouldn't be able to motivate myself to do them. Then I met Jon Knopke (remotely), the CEO of Health House. He told me about his rowing studios in Los Angeles and Kansas City and explained that they were offering free daily Instagram Live workouts focused on high-intensity strength training. He encouraged me, along with my fiancé, to commit to following their workouts for 30 days in a row. What did I have to lose?

Well, rest days for one. It seemed a bit extreme to do a workout every single day, but because Health House classes focus on different muscle groups each day, you can do these workouts seven days a week. And I was more than willing to give it a try. My wedding is scheduled for September (although now, it's a bit up in the air), and I didn't want to stop exercising just because I was at home. I had a vision of me in my wedding gown and was very interested to see if I'd notice a physical change after the 30 days.

I'll admit that after the first workout, I wondered how I was going to do this every day for the next four weeks. These workouts were tough, but my fiancé and I are alike in the sense that once we commit to something, we're all in. Having him next to me was just the push I needed to keep giving my all, even when I wanted to collapse. And even through the phone, I felt connected to the instructors, who were so encouraging and energetic. These were my biggest - and most surprising - takeaways after the 30 days:

Posting About My Workouts Made Me Work Harder

I'll do the occasional Instagram Story or two, but I was never one to share every detail of my day. I always thought, Does anyone care? Yet once I decided to announce we were doing a 30-day challenge on Instagram, and began posting short videos of our daily workouts, I felt a responsibility to keep my word. Posting those videos kept me accountable. Plus, the constant "likes" from Health House, as well as the encouraging words from friends, were a nice reminder that I should be proud of the work I was putting in.

I Gained Weight, and I Didn't Freak Out

Before this challenge, I was very focused on the number on the scale - but over the course of those 30 days, I shifted my attention to how I actually felt. Surprisingly, while I had gained weight, I liked the way I looked in the mirror. Knopke had advised us to add more weight to our workouts as we progressed, and I realized that in the past - though I worked out consistently - I had never really pushed myself in that way.

For the first time ever, I felt myself getting stronger. I was able to complete a round of push-ups without dropping to my knees. My go-to set of weights increased from 5 pounds to 12! I can see definition in my arms and even some in my abs, and when you feel that good, who cares about the number on the scale?

Working Out Every Day Helped Ease My Anxiety

I've always found that exercise helps with anxiety, but this daily commitment was even more beneficial. During this time of uncertainty (with COVID-19, my wedding, and my career), my anxiety has been at an all-time high. Before these workouts, I felt like I lacked purpose and I had no routine to help get me through the day, which only increased my anxiety. Once we added in a commitment to Health House, I suddenly had something on my calendar. It gave me purpose, and in turn, I felt less stressed and happier.

It Strengthened My Relationship

While my fiancé and I have been together 24/7 these past two months, there's a difference between being together and spending quality time. Our workouts allowed us to carve out 45 minutes of quality time together, every day. No matter what the day brought, I knew the two of us at the very least had this time together, without any other distractions. We joked about the workouts, encouraged each other in the moment, and complimented each other on how far we had both come.

Even now that our 30-day commitment is over, we've continued work out together daily. While the Health House workouts aren't easy, the feelings of accomplishment supersede any of the temporary pain. I look forward to logging on to Instagram and joining the instructors every day. I don't see us stopping until they do!

Elisabeth Akinwale Writes Letter to Black Athletes in CrossFit: "You Build Your Own Table"

CrossFit competitor Elisabeth Akinwale is a well-known name in the CrossFit world; the athlete, mother, and coach has won more than 20 events at the Games and Regionals. So when she shared a letter on Instagram addressed to "Black folks in CrossFit" to recognize that she and others have felt harmed and disappointed by the brand - and to write something specific for those who had reached out to her - it resonated.

Elisabeth explained in the letter, published on June 4, that of the 22 years she's been training, she spent about six of them in the CrossFit space and competed in five CrossFit Games from 2011 to 2015. She's never had an official relationship with CrossFit headquarters or a CrossFit affiliate, but she wrote: "I've had the honor and pleasure of knowing and collaborating with some CrossFit athletes that are doing amazing works in their communities, met lots of lovely people, and had transformative experiences."

But for the past decade, Elisabeth said, she's been asked to account for CrossFit's failure to integrate. "I always wondered why these questions were directed to me and not to the establishment," she wrote. From her experience and what she's seen, she said, nothing much has evolved, but she applauded anyone taking part in activism to help make changes in CrossFit. "It's heartening to see the number of people who are speaking up for righteousness. That is progress. The atmosphere is different now and I have hope that can lead to change."

Elisabeth continued, "I dedicated a good deal of myself trying to create space for us in CF," through representation at CrossFit events, countless posts discussing these important issues, conversations, videos, and blogs. "At a certain point you stop asking for a seat at the table and you build your own table."

Because CrossFit is a business, Elisabeth wrote, it is responsible for establishing its own culture and carrying out its own values. On June 5, CrossFit did publish this statement on its Facebook page that read: "Members of this community feel neglected, left out, trapped, and hurt. Some are isolated, angry, and confused, while others are actively seeking ways to effect real change. We see you. We hear you," and asked, "What can we do to better serve the Black Community in CrossFit?"

Just a few short days after that statement was posted, CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman made a racist comment that triggered hundreds of gyms to disaffiliate from CrossFit HQ. On June 9, CrossFit announced his resignation, and the following day, Elisabeth responded on Instagram.

Elisabeth explained that she hasn't been part of CrossFit for the past four years, although people will probably always see her through the CrossFit lens because that's how they first heard about her. Over the past few weeks, people from the CrossFit community have continued to reach out to her, specifically about dismantling racism - even people who've never considered these issues but are wanting to do better. Elisabeth said she'll continue talking about these issues, "not because the CF brand matters, but because people do."

"The CF community prides itself on being able to come together to do good," Elisabeth said. "Imagine if they harnessed that power towards contributing to the eradication of systemic racism both within CF and in society."

No-Bake Chocolate-Dipped Peanut Butter Protein Cookies

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup rolled oats
    1 cup salted creamy peanut butter (or other nut butter; add 1/4 teaspoon salt if using unsalted)
    1 cup pitted medjool dates (10 to 12)
    1 can white beans, drained and rinsed
    1/3 cup nondairy chocolate chips (I used Enjoy Life)
    1/4 cup chopped salted peanuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Add the rolled oats to a food processor, and grind into a powder, about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Add the peanut butter, dates, and beans, and process until a smooth dough forms.
  4. Using about 2 tablespoons of the dough, roll cookies into balls and flatten them onto the cookie sheet. Use a fork to make the little criss-cross design.
  5. Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Use a spoon to spread melted chocolate on half of each cookie, then sprinkle with a few chopped peanuts.
  6. Place the cookies in the fridge so the chocolate can set. Store uneaten cookies in the fridge in an airtight container.
