According to a Yoga Instructor, These Are the 56 Most Essential Yoga Poses

If you've been thinking about trying yoga, but you're a little intimidated after scrolling through Instagram and seeing people post photos of themselves balancing on their hands or sitting with their legs behind their heads, don't stress. As a yoga instructor, I'm here to ease your anxiety. This is a list of the most basic poses found in any yoga class or at-home video. While some poses are more challenging than others, most won't leave you knotted up like a pretzel. Becoming familiar with these essential yoga poses will boost your confidence, but even if you're a seasoned yogi, you'll appreciate having all your favorite yoga poses all in one spot.

Experts Agree: Yoga Can Help You Lose Weight, Especially If You Do This Type of Practice

Losing weight through yoga sounds almost too good to be true. On the surface, yoga seems like the polar opposite of a fast-paced high-intensity interval training (HIIT) circuit or a weightlifting workout, the two kinds of exercise usually recommended for weight loss. A yoga class leaves your body feeling totally different: refreshed instead of wiped out, loose and flexible instead of tight. It's even good for your mental health, helping you deal with stress and anxiety.

HIIT, weightlifting, and cardio are fun and effective for weight loss, but they're also not for everyone. If yoga sounds more appealing and weight loss is your goal, it's natural to wonder if your daily practice can help you shed pounds.

Yes, You Can Lose Weight With Yoga

"Yoga can be a good source of exercise," said Jorianne Numbers, MS, an exercise physiologist with Northwestern Medicine. At the most basic level, she said, yoga is a form of movement that helps you burn calories, which is a major part of losing weight (though your exact amount burned will depend on your height, weight, and gender).

But there's more behind yoga's relationship with weight loss than first meets the eye. An effective practice also fosters a mind-body connection that makes you more mindful in every facet of your life. "Yoga brings you into a heightened state of awareness," explained Lara Heimann, physical therapist, yoga instructor, and founder of LYT Method, a yoga certification program. Moving through different poses and holds increases your awareness of your body, and that can translate to other effective weight-loss habits, like eating healthy, which is key for losing weight no matter what exercise you're doing. (Try this two-week eating plan to get started.) "The congruency between mindfulness on and off of the mat is what can make yoga more effective for weight loss than other forms of exercise," Lara told POPSUGAR.

Yoga has long been regarded as an effective way to relieve stress, and that on its own can be a weight-loss tool. "Having a less stressful life, and fewer stress hormones such as cortisol, can help anyone lead a healthier lifestyle," explained Liza Janda, a certified yoga instructor at Yoga Janda. Cortisol is an appetite stimulant, hence why we tend to eat (and overeat) when we're stressed out and to crave unhealthy foods in particular. A relaxing yoga practice can help you deal with stress in a healthier way and even avoid it, and the related weight gain, altogether.

Which Practices Are Best For Weight Loss?

If you're looking for pure calorie burn, our experts agreed that fast-paced Vinyasa yoga is the practice to choose. "A good Vinyasa class will take you through a variety of movements, with a focus on integrating your core and weight-bearing on your hands and feet," Lara explained. Imagine a classic flow from plank to triceps push-up to Upward Facing Dog - you're getting a core burn, working your triceps, then using your arms to hold up your bodyweight as you stretch. This kind of weight-bearing move "increases heart rate and builds muscle," Liza told POPSUGAR. The more muscle you build, the more calories you'll burn even after you're done exercising.

Power yoga is another good choice, Jorianne told POPSUGAR, though it's more intense and better suited for people who are already in good shape. "In power yoga, there is less meditation and more of a focus on standing poses and faster-paced movement," she explained. Your heart will pump even harder than in a Vinyasa class, which is good news for losing weight; Liza recommended aiming for a heart rate that's 55 to 85 percent of your maximum to get the most calories burned out of a class. (Use this guide to calculate your max heart rate and find your target zones.)

And what about hot yoga? "Vinyasa classes burn more calories than the hot yoga," Lara told POPSUGAR. "Hot yoga makes you feel like you're working harder than you actually are because your body is just trying to thermoregulate." Basically, sweating more doesn't mean you're burning more calories. "The sweat you produce should come simply from physical exertion," Liza said, not from temperature.

A more gentle yoga class, such as Hatha, won't burn as many calories. But it can benefit your mental health and decrease stress levels while helping you be more mindful, all of which have weight-loss benefits as well.

How Often Should I Do Yoga to Lose Weight?

For the best weight-loss results, Liza recommended doing yoga three times a week. Continue to stay active and get your heart rate up on the other three to four days as well, whether through cardio, weightlifting, or HIIT workouts of 45 minutes to an hour. And keep your nutrition in mind, too. "Exercise alone without dieting makes losing weight hard," Jorianne said. "Weight loss occurs when you burn more calories than you consume."

If you eat healthy and burn calories, though, the results will come, and yoga has a place in the process. Start with this 30-minute power flow to relax, rejuvenate, and work up a sweat.

Yes, You Should Be Wearing (and Reapplying) Sunscreen While Self-Isolating Indoors

For a lot of people, the last thing they're thinking about right now is whether or not they should be reapplying sunscreen after their 1 p.m. Zoom work call. But there are a lot of reasons why you shouldn't let this essential skin-care step fall by the wayside, even if you're spending most of your time indoors.

"Daily sunscreen use can help guard against skin cancer and premature skin aging", said Dr Anjali Mahto, a London-based consultant dermatologist. That means come rain, wind, or shine, protection is key - yes, even when it's cloudy outside. To get to the bottom of why exactly wearing sunscreen is still as important as ever right now, we spoke to some of the top dermatologists and skin-care experts.

Should You Be Wearing Sunscreen Indoors?

We're sorry to say it, but just because you're indoors for the majority of your day, doesn't mean you should be skipping the SPF step. While "UVB [rays] do not penetrate through windows, UVA does", said Dr Anne Wetter, dermatologist and founder of skin-care brand Allél, which is why we still need protection. It's extra important to remember your SPF if you're sitting by a window enjoying the sunshine, because "you are still at risk of UV damage. While you may not burn when sitting next to a window, the UV exposure can cause premature aging," added Dr Susan Mayou, consultant dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic.

And why is this protection so important? Let us all remind ourselves of this now-famous photo of a truck driver who suffered visible sun damage on one side of his face, which was exposed to the sun for an extended period of time, without SPF protection.

Now that we've concluded that, yes, you absolutely still need to wear sunscreen during social distancing, what SPF should you use? According to the experts, you need to look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and "it should be a minimum of SPF 30", said Dr Mahto.

Should You Worry About Blue Light Damage, Too?

Protecting against the sun's rays through your windows is most important here. However, there's something else you might want to take into consideration: blue light from your phone and computer screens. First, it's important to note that scientific studies draws mixed conclusions on the effects caused by blue light.

According to Dr Wetter, blue light has a very short wavelength with high energy, which can be less than ideal for the skin. Some studies - including one published in 2014 in the Free Radical Biology and Medicine Journal - showed that blue light can affect those with hyper-pigmentation issues. "Blue light can be associated with increased hyper-pigmentation/melanogenesis in the skin, i.e. melasma might be exacerbated by blue light," said Dr Wetter. For this reason she recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which protects against blue light, too.

How Often Should I Reapply Sunscreen Indoors?

Sadly, it's not always the case that after one application you're good for the day, especially if you're working with the sun blazing into your house, or working up a sweat with an at-home workout. "If you are in the sun for prolonged periods, you should be reapplying your sunscreen every two hours," said Daniel Issacs, director of research at Medik8. "This is because your sunscreen can begin to wear away and minimize levels of protection it is providing." Just as pool or ocean water can break down sunscreen, so does sweat - especially if you're doing an especially rigorous HIIT or Tabata session.

Makeup isn't protecting you from the sun, either. Although it probably isn't so much of a worry being at home (anyone else forgotten how to apply foundation?), you still need to reapply over the top of your makeup. Thanks to new nifty formulations, you can top up your SPF using facial mists and powders. However, if you don't have either of those handy, you will need to use your regular sunscreen cream or lotion.

What Are the Best Sunscreens to Wear Indoors That Won't Clog Pores?

One of the biggest issues people have with wearing sunscreen is that it can feel heavy or clog pores. This is because mineral sunscreen (also known as physical sunscreen) sits on top of the skin and causes congestion, while chemical sunscreen sinks into the skin, which can lead to irritation. Neither are ideal. However, thanks to smarter formulations, these days you shouldn't have to suffer breakouts to protect against harmful UV rays. The key is to look for the word noncomedogenic (non-clogging) on the packaging. And we hate to say it, but like all skin care, there is a degree of trial and error to find out what works best for your skin.

So, what are you waiting for? Go and wash your hands, then slather that sunscreen on your face and neck - and if you're taking things really seriously, the backs of your hands, too. If you're looking for a new sunscreen to add to your skin-care routine, read on to see our favorite, lightweight, noncomedogenic suggestions, ahead.

Keke Palmer Calls For Change in America: "I Have Waited For a Revolution"

Keke Palmer is continuing to use her platform to call for change amid the ongoing protests against racial injustice and police brutality. After the 26-year-old actress asked the National Guard troops to join her in marching at a recent demonstration, Keke penned a guest column for Variety explaining what that interaction was like for her and why the Black Lives Matter movement is so important.

"I like following rules and doing what I'm told. As a kid, these rules stick with you. But even at a young age, I was taught to question the things that didn't feel right to me," she began in the column, which was published on Tuesday. "Sometimes, going against authority is the only remedy for change, especially when we have seen, too often, those authority figures step over the line. So where do you draw the line? How do you know to draw the line? Is there a line?"

"We are now being called to challenge the rules and to challenge the character of those making them."

Keke explained that she joined the recent protests in Los Angeles "to bring as much awareness as we can to the injustices in America and fight against white supremacy and what it does to our nation." "I spoke with National Guardsmen who were preventing us from marching past a certain point and challenged them to march with us. In my wildest dreams, they would all march with us without risk of punishment," she said. Even though the guards didn't march with her, they did kneel. However, that wasn't enough for Keke. "Kneeling has become a mockery of sorts," she added. "Kneeling on George Floyd's neck is what killed him. Now we see police officers kneeling and then, moments later, attacking peaceful protesters. At this point, the kneeling has no meaning."

The actress then emphasized that a revolution is needed in America to dismantle and rebuild the current systems. "We may not all share in the Black experience of this, but I can guarantee you, almost everyone in this country has been oppressed in some form or another," Keke explained. "I have waited for a revolution, I believe, my entire life . . . I truly believe that everything that has led us to this moment has prepared us for a revolution and a revelation: the dismantling and rebuilding of a system that is better, more equitable and representative of the people it claims to represent."

She ended her guest column with an important message: "So while it may be scary, we were born for this: we were born to be leaders and grow out of just 'following rules' because following rules isn't enough. We are now being called to challenge the rules and to challenge the character of those making them."

Ben Platt's Cutest Moments With His Dad Prove Brilliance Runs in the Family

Talent certainly runs in Ben Platt's family. The 26-year-old has made a big name for himself with his acting and music career, but his father, Marc Platt, is just as brilliant. In addition to producing the hit musical Wicked, Marc has worked on countless blockbuster films like La La Land, Legally Blonde, and Mary Poppins Returns. While Ben clearly gets his love of theater from Marc, his dad also inspired how he approached stardom.

During his Netflix special, Ben Platt: Live From Radio City Music Hall, he gushed about his father, saying, "I really love my father very much. My dad is the greatest. He's a wonderful person, and he's taught me many things, not the least of which is that being a decent human being comes far before being a decent artist. And it's only possible to be a decent artist if you are a decent human being." He even wrote the song "In Case You Don't Live Forever" from his album Sing to Me Instead in honor of his dad.

Over the years, the father-son duo have shared a handful of sweet moments together as they cheer each other on in their personal endeavors. While Ben has attended a handful of his father's movie premieres, Marc was by Ben's side when he took home his first Tony Award in 2017. Ahead, see some of their best moments together.

Alicia Keys and Trevor Noah Discuss the "Deeply Rooted Pandemic" of Racism in America

Alicia Keys is using her platform as a singer and songwriter to uplift the voices of those who need to be heard. On June 15, the "Underdog" singer sat down for a virtual chat with The Daily Show's Trevor Noah to discuss the destructive and harmful pervasiveness of racism in America and how these racial injustices have inspired her to take action with her music and beyond.

Alicia explained that her latest song, "Perfect Way to Die," was inspired by Mike Brown - who was killed by police officers in Ferguson, MO, in 2014 - and Sandra Bland - who was found hung in a jail cell in Waller County, TX, after being arrested for a minor traffic violation in 2015. "You hear their stories in these lyrics, and the devastating thing is that it's never not going to be relevant," Alicia said. She then added that she wrote the song with the intention of encapsulating the fire and energy behind the ongoing protests across the country and the outrage that has inspired so many to make their voices heard.

Alicia has also been using her platform to lead a celebrity-filled initiative to seek justice for the death of Breonna Taylor, who was killed by Louisville police officers on March 13 after they forcibly entered her home to execute an unannounced drug raid. Through the initiative, Alicia and several Black women celebrities put pressure on the city of Louisville to ban no-knock warrants. On June 11, Louisville's Metro Council unanimously passed Breonna's Law, which prohibits no-knock warrants and requires officer body cameras to be turned on before and after every search.

"We are in a real place that we can all see that this is the most major pandemic of all," Alicia said. "This deeply rooted racism, this police brutality, this treatment of Black people that is just completely unacceptable. To the point where daily we're seeing lives lost, people murdered for nothing, nothing - for being Black." Alicia mentioned that Breonna's sister lived in the room next to hers and was fortunate not to be home the night the police raided their home, pointing out that Breonna's mother could have lost two daughters that night.

Looking toward the future, Alicia hopes to see progress and positive change, adding, "I'm just so honored that this song can be alive in this time when we really are on the precipice of great change." H.E.R. Is Officially Releasing Her Emotional Track, "I Can't Breathe"

Last week, H.E.R debuted "I Can't Breathe," a powerful new track written in the wake of the recent senseless deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police brutality. She delivered a moving performance during an iHeartRadio Living Room concert, and on Juneteenth, the singer is officially releasing the single on buying and streaming platforms.
