Akt Deodorant Balm Is the Best Aluminium-Free Formula I've Used - and I Don't Say That Lightly
I never really believed in natural deodorant. I'm the kind of person who settles for nothing less than a clinical-strength formula that wicks away moisture (or stops it from appearing in the first place), and keeps me smelling fresh for the entire work day. So, when I pitched an article to my editor about the best natural, aluminium-free deodorants on the market right now, I was more shocked than anyone to find a formula that I could not only tolerate, but genuinely loved. Enter, stage right: Akt London: Born to Perform Deodorant ($20).
Akt London is a local British brand founded by Ed Currie and Andy Coxon, two dancers on the West End who know a little something about needing to feel fresh while working an extremely physical job. "We were in a show together called Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, at the Aldwych Theatre in London, back in 2015," Currie told POPSUGAR. "That's where it kind of started because, doing eight shows a week under the hot lights, training during the day, rehearsal, gym, class - you can imagine the amount of sweat that is inducing. Plus, we wear the same costumes every night, so there's no way of keeping them fresh. No matter how much they wash them."
Currie explains that it got to the point where he was throwing away t-shirts every single week, and he thought, "something's got to change." This is how he came to create Akt Deodorant Balm, which started as an experiment in the kitchen of his Camden apartment. Fast forward three years - and countless iterations of the formula later - and Currie was finally ready to use his fellow West End dancers to test whether his deodorant was efficacious. Spoiler alert: they loved it.
"It's their reaction that really made us realize how good it was," said Coxon. "It wasn't until we went to the RSC (Royal Shakespeare Company) to see a play that my friend was in with Caroline Quentin (from Men Behaving Badly). Her husband is a cosmetic formulator, so she put us in touch with him, who then sets us up with a mentor and it just got a bit more serious than us wanting to sell it on Etsy, which was the original plan: making it on the hob, packaging in tins, and shipping it out ourselves." Their new mentor suggested they start a Kickstarter to raise some money - they smashed their target within a day, and to date, have raised nearly $200K.
The best way to describe Currie and Coxon's brand, Akt London, is to say that it's beautifully considered. The packaging (from the box, to the tube, and even the custom aluminum cap) is recyclable and waste-free, which was extremely important to them. But aside from its functionality and nod to sustainability, the packaging is also extremely chic.
Inspired by their industry, the typography is based on the old theatre billboards, the spacing is like cinema and movie theatre signs, and they've even named the fragrances after scenes. My favorite detail, though, is the directions for using the product. "Let's set the scene," it begins. "You open the box and take out The Deodorant Balm . . . Akt lasts all day. But you put it in your bag. Who knows where today will take you." It's this level of consideration and, let's be honest, cheekiness, that made me so excited by Akt - but to find out the product works? Well, I'm sold for life now, aren't I?
Like I said, the deodorant balm actually works. When I asked what the magic ingredient behind Akt's efficacy, Coxon joked, "fairy dust!" Coxon also explains that they never set out to create a natural deodorant per se, especially given the reputation that natural deodorants usually don't work - it was just a happy coincidence, he says. "We created something called Deo-Barrier Complex, which is a proprietary blend," Currie elaborates. "It's made of a combination of plants and mineral powders. They're all natural and they rest invisibly on the skin, so you won't ever notice them being there, but they absorb the sweat and wick it away from the skin." Coxon adds, You'll see a lot of natural deodorants use very similar ingredients to us. This is why we call it Deo-Barrier Complex. So, it's the right measurements of all the ingredients in the perfect amounts that we've spent three years figuring out. We feel we nailed it."
The balm is a thick, dry-ish paste that spreads easily and while it feels creamy on application, it dries down almost instantly. Surprisingly, the Akt London: Born to Perform Deodorant Balm does a pretty good job of keeping me dry throughout the day, which is almost unheard of for an aluminum-free deodorant formula. According to cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson of BeautyStat Cosmetics, this is thanks to "baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) as well as magnesium oxide, which also helps to absorb odor and wetness." Robinson did also note that baking soda can be irritating for some people who have very sensitive skin, but Currie assures me that this was a key consideration when formulating the deodorant, to ensure only a small amount was used in the balm.
Where many natural deodorants smell feminine, floral, or are very citrus-heavy, Akt's fragrances are created for all genders. In my opinion, they have more fresh, earthy, and spicy notes - which I love and actually think is sexy - and would compare all three to style of perfumes that Le Labo or Malin + Goetz are known for. "We never wanted it to be gender specific," said Currie. "Because it's 2020 - it's just a good deodorant that's going to work for anyone."
Running with the luxe and efficacious ethos behind Akt, Currie and Coxon also wanted the deodorant balm to be a self-care moment for people, too. That's why they've designed the brass applicator that's inspired by the ancient Chinese healing technique, Gua Sha. The applicator has dual purpose: first, to help apply the product and second, to give yourself a little massage afterward. "So you put a pea size amount on the applicator, and just apply it to your underarm," said Coxon. "You can literally, like spreading butter on your toast, just spread until it's absorbed."
Currie also says that while creating the deodorant balm, they wondered why people don't care for underarms in the same way they do with other parts of our bodies, especially given the high concentration of lymph nodes in this area. "We wanted something that was going to not just apply the deodorant, but it was going to massage that area to encourage microcirculation for lymph nodes and correct lymphatic drainage," he said. "If you do this specific massage afterwards . . . once you do it, you feel so zingy." I can personally vouch for this and, thanks to the deodorant balm's coconut oil and shea butter ingredients, the massage is a lovely self-care ritual that feels good for the soul - plus, it spreads the deodorant's fragrance around my upper body, leaving me smelling fresh all day.

Netflix's Dark Remade as a Romantic Comedy Is a Parallel Universe We Would Love to Live in
Netflix's Dark is a hit sci-fi drama series following the twisted timelines and parallel universes of four families in a small German town. If you're a superfan who just finished season three and want a bit more out of the Dark universe, then Netflix is giving us a special treat - a mock trailer of Jonas and Martha's untold love story, if Dark was remade into a romantic comedy.
"Dark: The Story of Jonas and Martha" follows two unsuspecting teens searching for love, and stumbling into time travel, while trying to lead a normal life. Although Jonas and Martha are seemingly perfect for each other, Martha is already dating Jonas's best friend Bartosz - and Jonas can't seem to be in the right place at the right time. Jonas is convinced that Martha is the love of his life and will do anything to get the chance to be with her and avoid an apocalypse. The story of Jonas and Martha, a kind of twisted Romeo and Juliet, or Adam and Eve, is "a romance that defies time, and space, the apocalypse, and their own family tree."

Elle and Noah Are Back With Even More Relationship Woes in The Kissing Booth 2 Trailer
If you've been missing the top-tier adolescent drama that is high school, Netflix has the perfect remedy - the trailer for The Kissing Booth 2. The sequel to the streamer's breakout original film is due to drop on July 24, and the trailer promises just as much secondhand embarrassment as the first!
The film picks up soon after the end of the first, with Elle (Joey King) and Lee (Joel Courtney) heading into their final year of high school as Noah (Jacob Elordi) begins his freshman year at Harvard. Elle and Noah are continuing their ill-advised romance long distance, which proves a little harder than they anticipated when they respectively meet Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and Chloe (Maisie Richardson-Sellers). Throw in the return of the kissing booth, college applications, and all the love triangles you can find, and you've got a packed plot! Will Elle be able to trust Noah? More importantly, will she realize that she's actually meant to be with Lee?? (I know I'm not the only one rooting for a friends-to-lovers ending here. Just look at Courtney's sweet face!)
Watch the trailer, check out photos from the film ahead, and get ready to revisit the infamous kissing booth on July 24.

Chobani's New PB&J Flavor Isn’t as Weird as You Might Think
Grab your spoons, because Chobani is now selling a PB&J-flavored Greek yogurt that has us reminiscing about snack times from our childhood. And while you might be picturing an eclectic combo of chunks of peanut butter, jelly, and perhaps even bread in Greek yogurt (sorry), the new flavor is simply described as "strawberry greek yogurt with peanut butter," according to its packaging.
While I'm admittedly no longer a fan of PB&Js, I do remember the comforting joy of eating them as a kid and might even be convinced to try it in Greek yogurt form. I mean, can you really go wrong with Chobani's strawberry yogurt as the base? The new flavor is available at retailers nationwide now until September, so be sure to get your hands on the salty-sweet snack this summer if you want to give it a try. The popular Greek yogurt brand also announced that it would be donating all profits from the limited-edition item to Feeding America to help support local food banks. Check out the below for a closer look of Chobani's new PB&J yogurt.

I’m a Beginner Yogi, and These 4 Goals Are Keeping Me Motivated on My Mat
Believe it or not, I'd say that I've been a yoga beginner for nearly a decade. That's because I've only ever practiced periodically - maybe once a week for a month or two before rolling up my mat and letting it collect dust in the corner for a few more months.
Now, I consider myself in my longest, most consistent stretch as a yogi. Since the spring, I've been practicing at least three times a week. Although I'm only ever on my mat for about 30 minutes at a time max, I can already see so much progress in my poses and feel less stiffness in my joints.
To keep myself on track to graduate from my beginner status and continue my regular practice, I've given myself four achievable goals to work toward over the summer.
Stay For the Entire Savasana
One of my horrible workout habits is not cooling down. Truth be told, I've gotten a lot better about not running off after the last rep in strength classes, but, lately, I've been getting lazy with it when it comes to yoga.
Even though I look forward to the glorious release of Savasana, sometimes my racing thoughts take over. I try to get ahead of the day by closing out of my yoga app early and getting some errands done. But, I know I'd have a much smoother, less stressful start to my morning if I stayed on my mat through Savasana.
Attempt New and Difficult Poses
I dream of mastering Crow Pose. I've always envied anyone who was able to balance on their arms. But envying and simply dreaming isn't getting me any closer to performing Crow Pose. I've notoriously given up and gone into Child's Pose the very second my instructor even announced the pose because I was afraid of failure - and falling on my face.
The other day, though, thanks to my instructor's words of wisdom, I pushed away the fear and attempted to get into the pose. I fell over a lot and my arms were shaking, but I kept going. After trying and trying and trying again, I managed to balance on my arms for a second or two. It felt amazing! I know that if I keep practicing, I'll work up to holding Crow Pose for even longer.
Concentrate on My Breath
When I'm working through a fast-paced flow, I hold my breath without even noticing it.
But it's the continuous breath work in yoga - the combo of deep inhales and exhales - that helps calm me down in moments of tension. In an effort to be more thoughtful in my practice and really reap those relaxing benefits, I'd like to start connecting my breaths with my movement.
Make It to 60 Minutes on My Mat
I start to let my mind wander after about 25 minutes on my mat. Instead of working through my pent-up energy during a flow, I begin making laundry lists of things I need to do in my head - then, I count down the minutes until I can roll up my mat. Because of that, the last quarter of my practice feels like a wash.
Dedicating an hour to meditative running is no problem for me whatsoever - and I hope to build that same relationship with yoga. I know my anxiety levels, my pose technique, and the health of my joints will be better for it.

Broadway Actor Nick Cordero Dies at 41 From Coronavirus Complications
Broadway star Nick Cordero has died at age 41 after months spent battling coronavirus. His wife Amanda Kloots shared the news on Instagram on July 5, two days after telling supporters that Cordero would likely require a double lung transplant. He is survived by Kloots and their 1-year-old son, Elvis.
"God has another angel in heaven now. My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth," Kloots wrote. "I am in disbelief and hurting everywhere. My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him. Nick was such a bright light. He was everyone's friend, loved to listen, help and especially talk. He was an incredible actor and musician. He loved his family and loved being a father and husband. Elvis and I will miss him in everything we do, everyday."
She thanked Cordero's doctor as well as the extended network of supporters who offered encouragement on social media, where Kloots had been posting updates on Cordero's condition. He was hospitalized on April 1 and spent several weeks in a coma as he battled the virus; doctors put him on a ventilator and eventually amputated his right leg. Cordero woke up in mid-May, and in July, Kloots said that he could open his eyes and answer commands.
Fans and loved ones had rallied around Cordero via Instagram, posting videos of themselves dancing to his music, something Kloots said kept her spirits up.
"I cannot begin to thank everyone enough for the outpour of love, support and help we've received these last 95 days. You have no idea how much you lifted my spirits at 3pm everyday as the world sang Nicks song, Live Your Life," Kloots wrote. "We sang it to him today, holding his hands. As I sang the last line to him, 'they'll give you hell but don't you light them kill your light not without a fight. Live your life,' I smiled because he definitely put up a fight. I will love you forever and always my sweet man."

Just an Appreciation Post of Insecure's Alexander Hodge Looking Like a Whole Snack
Have you ever looked at someone and asked yourself, "How can one person be so gorgeous?" Well, that was the case for me when I first laid my eyes on Alexander Hodge. The 28-year-old Asian-Australian actor is best known for his role as Andrew on HBO's Insecure, but you might also recognize him from his appearances in Modern Family, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, High Maintenance, and his latest project, Milkwater. From his dreamy brown eyes to his signature hair, there's just so much to swoon over - and I'm sure his girlfriend, Ava Luu, would agree. So, as we await the premiere of season five of Insecure, let's just take a moment to appreciate all the times Alexander looked like a whole snack, shall we?

I Went to Universal Studios After It Reopened, and Here Are 6 Major Changes You Should Know About
As a Floridian and theme park-lover, Universal Studios has always been a source of joy for my family and I. We always have the best time in Orlando, and it's been incredible to see the rides change over the years. But after the parks closed earlier this year due to the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVD-19) pandemic, I wasn't sure what the future of one of my favorite places would look like. So, when the parks reopened recently, I was itching to make the drive to Orlando and experience it (mostly for the rides, but also for banana split flavor Dippin' Dots) for myself. Here are the top six things you should know about the "new" Universal Studios if you plan on going anytime soon.
This Figure Skater Transformed Into Daenerys For Her Captivating Game of Thrones Free Skate
You know a figure skating program is something special when the skater can fall on the opening jump and still place first. That's exactly what Russian skater Alexandra Trusova did at Skate Canada in October 2019, missing the landing on her opening quad salchow but getting right back up and proceeding to nail every other jump and choreography sequence. Just 15 at the time, Trusova said in a postmeet interview that she typically has trouble with her first jump but tries to pull herself together for the rest of the program.
She did that and more this time around. With a program set to music from the Game of Thrones soundtrack, Trusova embodied both Daenerys, cupping a dragon against her shoulder at the beginning of the routine, and the dragons themselves with her fierce and powerful skating. The full program included three more quads (the most difficult category of jump) and ended with a bang that left us on the edge of our seats, and with over a million views so far on YouTube, we think viewers agree. Watch the mesmerizing free skate for yourself above!

Crayola's New Colorful Mask Packs For Kids Come With Options For Every Day of the Week
With pediatricians recommending that schools across the country to reopen in the fall, parents are thinking about how to keep their children safe should their child's school be open. Although social distancing is still the name of the game, keeping your kids stocked with plenty of washable face masks is always a good idea.
Thankfully, Crayola is stepping up to the plate by releasing a line of breathable cloth masks for kids, and they're as cute as it gets. Because they come in sets of five, Crayola has dubbed the line "School Mask Packs," which means that children will have a face covering for every day of the school week. Additionally, each pack comes with a mesh laundry bag that makes washing them easy.
And kids aren't the only ones who can benefit from Crayola's new venture. The brand also has a line for teens and adults so that your older kids and teachers can stay safe and covered, too. Families can preorder their face masks on Crayola's website and expect them at their doors by July 31.
Ahead, take a look at Crayola's washable school mask packs, which come in various colors and styles.
Self-Care Sunday: Journaling Has Been Unexpectedly Making Me Feel More Centered
I was that kid who loved going shopping for school supplies. I'm a sucker for a great notebook, and I definitely have pens I like and pens I don't like. When I see a cute notebook, sometimes I grab it, even though I usually write things down on my phone or computer. Well, this past weekend I was feeling a bit stagnant. I had so many thoughts running in my head, and I knew I had to express my emotions in some way. After having a conversation with my parents, I had the sudden urge to write my thoughts down, but I knew I couldn't just open my Notes app. I had to actually take pen to paper.
I grabbed one of my pretty colored pens (the purple one, to be exact) and a journal I keep by my bed that hadn't been opened in months, if not years. I always hear about the power of journaling from some of my favorite wellness influencers, but frankly, I thought it was trivial. However, there is something about physically writing down your thoughts that makes them that much more tangible, and that much more likely to actually stick in your mind. Plus, writing with a colored pen is fun. Now, my notebook is getting filled up again, and I'll probably need another one soon. With all our minds going a million different places at once, it's easy to neglect some self-care, but this is probably one of the simplest acts I can think of that allows me to prioritize my mental health. Writing down my thoughts makes them feel less overwhelming and allows me to make sense of my emotions. I really didn't think it could be this simple. If you're feeling like you need a moment of self-care, grab a pen and paper.
Roller Skater Oumi Janta Has Taken Instagram by Storm With Her Fun and Uplifting Skate Videos
Oumi Janta is a roller-skating instructor based in Berlin, and her videos make us want to get up and dance (oh, and maybe strap on some quad skates right along with her). She gives lessons and takes part in "roller discos" for Rollerfusion Club, and we are hypnotized by her smooth moves and joyful energy. Footage of Janta grooving to the beat and doing fancy footwork in her skates has been circulating on Instagram lately - actress Viola Davis even posted a video of Janta on her own feed.
Janta truly does look like she has a blast skating, and skating to good music in particular. She wrote in an Instagram post last year, "What would I do without music! It makes me move, smile and enjoy the moment in a different level. One of the best moments is when I take over an empty Basketballcourt [sic] in the morning, Its [sic] amazing! Try it." Honestly? We might need to ASAP.
Janta has documented her progress learning new styles of skating and tricks, like different types of spins, for years on Instagram. This shows that even if she's working to improve, she's enjoying the sport all the same (and she's pretty darn great at it already!). Check out some of her coolest skating videos ahead. We promise they're worth the watch.
