A Play Expert Reveals What Kids Really Mean When They Say "I'm So Bored!"

Boredom. To some parents, it's a four-letter word – synonymous with laziness or a lack of motivation. But to others, it's one of the best things you can provide for your otherwise over-scheduled children.

Turns out, both sets of parents are right. Or wrong.

"Boredom is neither good, nor bad," Sandra Stone, PhD - a sociologist, professor, researcher, and author with more than 25 years of experience studying childhood play and development - told POPSUGAR.

Deepanshu Pandita, the CEO of Kido, an early-education platform, concurred: "It's like asking if feeling discontent with the way things are is good or bad – it can lead to inventions and medical discoveries or it can set one up for psychological suffering."

"We need to give children the time and freedom to follow their own interests."

Either way, there's certainly no escaping the feeling, particularly among children. The summer months off of school tend to be a breeding ground for boredom in general, but with the added layer of a pandemic - when there's little available to do and even fewer parents with the free time to facilitate any of it - the "I'm bored" whines are already reaching a fever pitch in most households.

So, then, how should parents navigate it? Stone and Pandita addressed the truth about this polarizing term.

How to Know If Their Boredom Is Actually Something Else

Boredom, Stone explained, is simply a "loss of interest" and it can take many forms in children. So, even if a child defines their lost interest as boredom, it could be due to something else entirely, and it's worth it for parents to dig in, especially with young kids who might not even fully understand the concept but have heard the phrase enough to use it.

"Children may also lose interest due to fatigue," she said. "Children who are tired may just need some down time, a time to rest. Rest could be restorative and provide the energy to purse an interest or to play."

"The word 'boredom' could be interpreted as 'I need to be with someone who loves me.'"

Another possibility is the need for human connection. "The word 'boredom' could be interpreted as 'I need to be with someone who loves me,'" Stone said. "This is a time when parents put aside the many things demanding their time and take the precious time to sit with their child, talk with their child, and snuggle with their child." It often doesn't require more than that, but occasionally, if a child is lonely, Stone suggested becoming a playmate for a few minutes until the child is satisfied.

Bottom line, if a child is expressing boredom, she said to "be careful not to first jump to providing him or her with a litany of ideas."

Although tempting to offer a quick solution, this puts the parent in control of the child's experience. "Instead, take the time to sit with your child and let your child 'talk' with you. Ask them to 'explain' what they mean when they say they're bored. The conversation may lead you to discover if the child is exhausted or simply needs your attention."

How to React When They Are Legitimately Bored

If it's not exhaustion or a need for attention, your child may be officially bored. In this case, it's usually to do with having lost interest in their current play environment – you took away their iPad and nothing can compete, they are ready for a bigger challenge, or they simply are stuck with what to do next. "Pay some careful attention to the causality behind it," Pandita noted.

For young children, parents can take an active approach. Pandita recommended redirection - "reminding them of activities they may not have considered." Stone suggested rotating toys throughout the week so the choices become different.

For five-year-olds and beyond, however, Pandita finds verbal engagement to be a more effective response that direct action.

"Even not doing anything at all is better than telling them how they have a million things they could do and have no right to feel bored."

"Try agreeing with them wholeheartedly – 'tell me about it!' and see what happens," he suggested. "They may feel compelled to find a reason to disagree simply because that isn't what they were expecting. Even not doing anything at all is better than telling them how they have a million things they could do and have no right to feel bored."

Stone also urged parents not to undermine children's abilities to decide on their own ideas for what to do about being bored.

"Gently lead your child to become independent in his or her thinking," Stone said. "As your child thinks of ideas, you can support those ideas and you can then expand on those ideas, adding suggestions. Again, be sure your child makes the choices. If he or she makes the choice, then boredom should not be an issue."

How to Respond If Nothing Seems to Combat Their Boredom

The trouble is that many kids, namely those who normally take on each day with a packed calendar of extracurricular clubs and sports, have been trained out of knowing how to combat boredom They literally don't have time to be bored and thus don't know how to address it.

"Unfortunately, our society, including schools, can derail children's natural course of following their own interests," Stone said.

Studies have shown that children are unintentionally directed by adults - for instance, to always be doing something, usually in the form of organized, highly-scheduled activities – so often that they actually give up their autonomy and sense of independence, and that it can stifle curiosity.

"Autonomy gives children the understanding that things are under their control," she said. "It promotes children making their own decisions about what to do and when to do it."

So although even autonomous, independent children can get bored, it's rarely an issue because they know what to do next, and, as Pandita said, they often grow and evolve as a direct consequence of boredom. "They'll naturally find something else to do or play," Stone said. "The issue on the other end of the spectrum is, 'has my child become dependent on me to entertain him or her?'"

For these kids, Stone and Pandita both advise encouraging open-ended play - a style of play that has no designated outcome to what will happen - as much as possible. "As adults, we need to give children the time and freedom to follow their own interests," Stone said. "If parents sense that this has diminished in their own child, then they may need to backtrack and support the child's sense of autonomy and independence by supporting their ability to make their own choices, to be curious, to follow their own interests. This may take more time at first, but the benefits will be worth it in the long run for both the child and the parent."

This Quick and Easy Peach Cobbler Is the Perfect Summer Dessert

I grew up with cobblers that were much more aligned with crumbles. Typically, this meant a warm apple dish capped with a crumbly oat topping and plenty of cinnamon. After moving to the South, however, I felt I should branch out to Southern classics. I needed to expand my range and began researching simple dishes like this peach cobbler. I searched around for an easy yet indulgent recipe and found the perfect one by Tastes Better From Scratch.

While I added brown sugar to satisfy my particular palette, this recipe is unbelievably delicious and is perfect as written. However, should you have specific dietary needs, it's totally adaptable. Gluten-free? Switch out the flour for your favorite alternative. Dairy-free? Oat milk would work beautifully. Watching your sugar intake? Try substituting monk fruit sweetener in place of sugar. This sumptuous and flexible peach cobbler will satisfy all of your comfort food needs, while saving you precious time in the kitchen. Just don't forget the vanilla ice cream - it's a perfect match!

Old-Fashioned Peach Cobbler

Lauren Allen of Tastes Better From Scratch

Notes

Don't be afraid to experiment and adapt this recipe to your tastes. I switched out the milk for buttermilk in equal amounts and added a bit of brown sugar to the butter to add a caramelized depth to the dish! Recipe directions have been adapted from the original source.

Ingredients

  1. Peach Preparation:
5 fresh peaches, peeled and sliced (about 4 cups) *frozen peaches can be substituted in equal amounts
    3/4 cup of granulated sugar
  1. For the Batter:
    1 cup all-purpose flour
    1 cup granulated sugar
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    3/4 cup milk
  1. Additional Ingredients:
    6 tablespoons of butter
    Ground cinnamon to taste
    Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  • Add 4 cups of sliced peaches to a deep pan. If you can't find ripe peaches, frozen peaches work equally well. Add 3/4 cup of sugar to the peaches, and cook over medium heat until the peaches are softened and bubbling. Remove from heat.
  • Add butter to bottom of baking dish. Place in oven until melted. Remove from oven. Swirl until butter evenly coats the bottom.
  • Begin making your batter. Add 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to a bowl. Combine gently with 3/4 cup of milk (or buttermilk) until smooth. Pour batter over the melted butter within the baking dish. Do not mix. If the batter forms in the middle of your dish, you can direct it to spread more evenly if needed.
  • Add peaches to the batter layer without mixing. Top with cinnamon and brown sugar to taste.
  • Once oven has reached 350 degrees, place your unbaked cobbler into the oven for 40 minutes.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!

Clare Crawley's Bachelorette Season Has a New Cast of 42 Men Competing For Her Heart

It's been several months since The Bachelor wrapped up and we met our new Bachelorette, but we can officially say that Clare Crawley's season will begin filming soon with a new cast of guys waiting to win her hand!

Originally meant to kick off back in March, filming for Crawley's season was halted out of concern for the health and safety of the cast and crew during the COVID-19 pandemic. Warner Bros. Television Group told Entertainment Tonight that although there were no confirmed cases on any productions, they would follow the guidance of the Centers For Disease Control, which meant shutting down filming until it was safe for the cast and crew to resume. On June 26, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the series would begin production "soon" at a private resort in Southern California, where Clare and the contestants would quarantine together and spend the entire season living on-site.

As expected, this means that some recasting has gone down as some of the previously announced contestants aren't able to film this time around. Crawley originally had 32 men on her list, which has now grown to 42, with 25 new names and 17 from the original contestant pool. The most significant name cut from the list is Matt James, who was revealed to be the next Bachelor amid the coronavirus shutdown. Becoming the franchise's first Black male lead is not a bad reason to get cut from a show!

Crawley's new crop of contestants includes men of all different ages, with a fair number of them in their 30s and a couple in their early 40s. Seeing as Clare is 38 years old, it's nice to see that production added more men around her age, but there are still enough men in their mid-20s to raise some eyebrows. See the entire list of the contestants ahead.

Adding This 10-Minute Reflex Workout to Your Routine Could Reduce Your Clumsiness

Sure, I've been known to twist an ankle or knee on every rogue floorboard, rock, or root in my path. Yes, a "think fast" toss in my direction usually ends with me tweaking a wrist. I can admit this.

My nearest and dearest say clumsiness is one of my defining traits - and in their opinion, that won't ever change. But, NASM-certified personal trainer and Gold's Gym senior director of fitness Tory Hale begs to differ - my reflexes just need some training.

That's right, Hale believes that following a well-balanced workout program can promote better reflexes – and therefore reduce one's chances of injury.

In Hale's opinion, a good program begins with balance training to help your body build a stronger awareness in space. This form of exercise prompts the motor neurons in your tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues to react to your surroundings more quickly.

As Hale likes to point out: what's the point in having fast reflexes if your body doesn't know where it is in space, right?

Working on your stability is step number two. By strengthening your awareness and stability, Hale notes that your speed, agility, and quickness will improve.

Lastly, if you enhance your tissues' durability with resistance training, your body will safely catch you when something unexpected comes up, Hale says.

While that explanation may have been a bit complex, the execution part is relatively simple.

If you incorporate two rounds of Hale's three-move workout - with 30 seconds of rest in-between each round, totaling about 10 minutes - into your fitness routine, you should notice your reflexes improve in time.

One Leg Balance

Since most movement comes from walking or running, building hip and ankle stability is important, Hale says. As an added challenge, Hale suggests trying to bounce and catch a ball while staying on one foot throughout this exercise.

  • Stand tall on one foot for 30 seconds with the opposite knee lifted to parallel with your hips.
  • Switch legs at 30 seconds.
  • If this comes easy, try standing on one foot while slightly bending the base leg. Keeping the lifted leg in line with your torso, hinge at the hips, and go only as low as you can go with your back straight.

Bird Dogs

Bird Dogs can help a person's innate ability to move forward while walking by activating the spiral and lateral lines in the body.

  • On your hands and knees, with your hands underneath your shoulders and knees underneath your hips, slowly lift your right leg back behind you until it's straight and in line with your torso.
  • Extend your left arm forward overhead at the same time you extend your right leg.
  • Slowly control both back down to the ground and repeat on the other side.
  • Alternate sides for 90 seconds.

Toe Jumps

This exercise can condition the muscles to rebound and absorb forces, Hale says.

  • Standing tall with your feet underneath your hips, slightly bend at the knee, lift the heels, and begin to bounce on the ball of each foot.
  • Try to keep each landing as light and quiet as possible.
  • Perform for 90 seconds.
  • For an added challenge, try this move one foot at a time - 45 seconds per side.

4 Arm Exercises That’ll Help You Feel Stronger While Kayaking

Kayaking can be such a serene summer activity - the sights and sounds of the rippling water and the warm sunshine touching down on my shoulders transport me to a much calmer state.

On the flip side, kayaking is also really, really challenging. The constant paddling to propel the boat through the water makes my arms feel like jelly - as you can imagine, lifting the kayak into the back of my dad's truck is quite a feat afterward. But I'm tired of cutting my kayak sessions short because I'm feeling the burn, so I'm tweaking my at-home workout routine and adding in arm exercises that'll help me feel stronger in my paddle strokes.

"In order to get the most out of your kayaking experience and to ensure you can get through whatever the water may throw at you, you will want to make sure that your upper body, as well as your core, is strong to withstand the balancing act that is required!" Annie Mulgrew, an NASM-certified personal trainer and CITYROW VP founding instructor, says.

"With each stroke, your body is working to maintain stability, so adding strength training to your workout routine that focuses on your core muscles - especially your obliques - as well as your upper body, as mentioned before, will make you a stronger kayaker!"

In fact, Mulgrew says the sport also requires the use of muscles in the upper back, shoulders, your chest, and your biceps and triceps. You can start boosting your kayaking stroke strength with this short workout curated by Mulgrew.

Do each of these exercises for 12-15 reps using medium weights. This entire circuit can be done for 3-5 rounds. Rest about 60-90 seconds between rounds.

Renegade Row + Push Up

  • With a medium weight in each hand, come into a plank position, shoulder stacked over the wrists and palms facing one another. Widen feet to create a stable base.
  • Pull the weight in the right hand toward the rib cage, keeping hips and shoulders square to the floor.
  • Pause for a moment with the weight touching the right side of the torso.
  • Slowly, return the weight to the floor and repeat on the left side.
  • To make this move more challenging, do a push up in-between sides. To modify, place knees on the ground.

Tall Kneeling Bicep Curl Into an Overhead Press

"Tall kneeling position is one of our favorites at CITYROW. It is a humbling position, as you are not able to use momentum to lift weights. It requires trunk stability and works your glutes and abdominal muscles," Mulgrew says.

  • Kneel with both knees on the ground (roll up a mat if you need extra padding).
  • Make sure knees are directly under your hips and your toes are tucked.
  • Engage your glutes and sit your torso upright, stacking your shoulders on top of your hips.
  • Holding onto a medium weight in each hand, bend your elbows to curl the weights toward the shoulders, then extend both arms directly overhead, palms facing the midline of the body.
  • Slowly return the weights to the starting position.
  • Your glutes and abs must continually engage in order to keep the torso upright.

Tall Kneeling Frontal + Lateral Raise

  • In the same tall kneeling position, hold on to a lighter medium weight in each hand, with arms in front of the body - palms facing the upper legs.
  • Keeping your glutes and abdominals engaged and pressing hips forward, lift the weights up in front of the body with straight arms until the wrists come to shoulder height - no higher.
  • Slowly return to starting position, then rotate the arms to the sides of the torso - palms facing in toward the sides of the hips.
  • Lift the weights out to the side or laterally, palms facing down, with straight arms until wrists come to
    shoulder height.
  • Slowly return to the starting position and repeat with the frontal raise. A frontal raise and a lateral raise constitutes one rep.

Reclined Chest Press in Bridge Position

  • Lie down on your back with knees bent, feet on the floor, and head relaxed on the mat.
  • Holding on to a medium weight in each hand, bend your elbows out to the side of your torso, creating a 90-degree angle in the arms with palms facing forward.
  • Lift your hips up off the floor as you extend both arms straight up toward the ceiling.
  • Slowly bend elbows and place hips back on the floor to return to the starting position.

Did This TikToker Take Polyjuice Potion? Because His Harry Potter "Audition Tapes" Are Spot-On

Daniel Radcliffe will always be the one true Harry Potter, but you couldn't pay us all the galleons in Gringotts to stop laughing at how spot-on this TikTok user's impressions are. In a series of "audition tapes" for the role of Harry, Tyler Warwick recreates some of the franchise's most memorable scenes, which include mimicking Radcliffe's inflections and facial expressions to a degree that has us slightly suspicious he might have taken a sip of polyjuice potion before filming.

Warwick's audition videos play on scenes from The Sorcerer's Stone all the way through to The Deathly Hallows parts one and two, and the way he transforms himself from an 11-year-old Harry to an 18-year-old Harry is spellbinding. How does he nail every scene? The auditions range from silly moments in the films - like Harry thinking he's high on liquid luck - to more emotional scenes - like the famous "EXPECTO! PATRONUUUUM!" Also, his take on Voldemort speaking Parseltongue is riddikulusly funny.

If there was ever another A Very Potter Musical and Darren Criss wasn't available, we know who we'd want to see on stage. Keep reading to see all of Warwick's hilarious Harry Potter auditions and a few of his other wizard-themed videos ahead.

Music Mood Board: Electrifying Guitar Solos to Get You Through the Day

Hello! I'm back with another edition of Music Mood Board. This week, I've been into songs that feature stirring guitar solos and chords. The six-string rig is one of my favorite instruments to listen to because of its range and character. It can be piercing and electrifying, soft and gentle, and - depending on who's strumming - it can take on its own persona within a song. Recently, I've been using guitar-heavy tunes as lethargy treatment to pull me out of an apathetic slump. So, if you're in the same boat, look ahead to hear some of the tracks that have kept me charged up.

This Beginner Pool Body-Sculpting Circuit Is the Perfect Summer Workout

You don't have to be an elite swimmer to get an effective pool workout in. In fact, you don't have to swim at all (with the exception of some treading!) thanks to pool body-sculpting exercises.

Don't be fooled by your lack of sweating midcircuit. Water provides resistance that'll have you toning while improving your cardiovascular health and flexibility - Lisa Reed, MS, CSCS, USAW, and the owner of Lisa Reed Fitness LLC, says - but that's not the only plus.

Thanks to the weightless environment, Reed notes that water buoyancy significantly decreases the stress on your joints and bones, too.

"Many athletes perform water workouts as they recover from an injury, or implement pool training to improve their performance," she shares.

Just like on land, Reed suggests grabbing a water bottle, applying sunscreen, and starting your workout with a dynamic warmup. Complete the following moves in the water until you feel loose and limber: skips, high-knee runs, butt-kicks, high Frankenstein kicks, run backward, leg swings, and then swim one lap.

Feeling good? Now you're ready to take on her beginner pool workout. Remember: the harder you push against the water as you move, the more you'll benefit from the water's body-sculpting potential.

These Squat Variations Might Be Better For Your Knees

Doing squats can be daunting if you tend to experience knee pain in your workout routine - but don't write off the move just yet.

According to fitness expert and ACSM-certified trainer John Ford, the squat motion is worked into everyday life - even outside of exercise.

"The good and the bad of the situation is that even if you have knee pain, the way life works is that you'll always be doing squat motions to get up and down from sitting, which means it's still important to work on the motion."

Of course, if you are experiencing knee pain, you should call up your doctor to prevent further injury - and if you've already been told to avoid the exercise altogether, you should follow that direction.

If squats are safe for you to perform, it might be time to modify the move or really ace your form. Ahead, Ford explains a few variations he generally suggests for clients that have knee pain.

The Assisted Squat

"The assisted squat motion is one of my favorite moves and one that I go back to time and time again," Ford says. "It's really good at developing your upper thigh and glute muscles to control the squat motion as to alleviate pressure on the knees during the squat movement. Additionally, it's a great hip opener, as it allows for you to work on dropping your squat past parallel."

To do an assisted squat, Ford says a client will hold onto the back of a chair, railing, or a banister - the feet will be closer to the railing and the arms will be extended straight with the torso upright. "To start the motion, I have clients start to sit back keeping their torso as straight as possible and shifting their weight into their heels. They proceed with the motion by dropping their hips down and slightly back to ideally form perfect right angles with their knee joints. There should be a good amount of tension in their arms, as we are using the arms to control the range and pace of the motions, as well as the amount of weight loaded into the motion."

Squatting With an Eccentric Focus on the Movement

After the assisted squat, Ford works with clients on focusing on the eccentric portion of the squat, or the downward motion.

"You start the motion by shifting weight onto your heels and shifting your weight slightly backward as you begin to bend your knees in the squat. This will prevent you from shifting your body weight forward and into the knees. You then focus on dropping your hips lower as your knees bend. Ideally, we don't want to see a noticeable shift forward of the knees past the ankle during the motion. You then stand back up by pushing through your heels, firing your glutes, and then quadriceps to bring you back to upright standing position."

Single Leg Squat

This is the most advanced variation, so beginners shouldn't attempt it. But once you've worked up to doing a single-leg squat, Ford says "it is a really beneficial at-home leg strengthener and hip opener."

First step - you put your back foot up on a chair, stair, or stool. Then, move the front leg forward about 2-2.5 feet from that chair, stair, or stool. "You want to have enough space to allow yourself to drop down into a right angle in the front knee while maintaining an almost fully upright torso. Your back leg in this motion will ideally fold back, meaning your glute will move towards your heel as if you were doing a quad stretch of the back leg," Ford says.

To start the motion back up again, Ford says to focus on pushing through the heel or back part of the foot. "This emphasis will help alleviate forward loading and pressure on the knee."

Congressman John Lewis Has Died at Age 80

Rep. John Lewis has died at age 80. The civil rights icon and seasoned congressman had been battling stage four pancreatic cancer. On July 17, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed the news of Lewis's death. Lewis served as the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district since 1986, and was known as a champion of the civil rights movement, playing a key role in the March on Washington in 1963 with Martin Luther King Jr. He announced last December that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer during a routine medical exam and was seeking treatment.

"John Lewis was a titan of the civil rights movement whose goodness, faith and bravery transformed our nation – from the determination with which he met discrimination at lunch counters and on Freedom Rides, to the courage he showed as a young man facing down violence and death on Edmund Pettus Bridge, to the moral leadership he brought to the Congress for more than 30 years," Pelosi said in a statement.
