I'm a College Senior Who Still Hasn't Lost the Freshman 15 - and I Couldn’t Care Less

I had always assumed that while packing for college, I'd be more worried about making friends or managing my class load than gaining weight. But in the fall of 2017, as I sat in my childhood bedroom labeling moving boxes "clothes" or "desk stuff," I was absolutely paralyzed by the idea of gaining the "freshman 15."

Though the possibility of my body changing frightened me - I've always had issues with body confidence - it wasn't the changes themselves that kept me up at night. In my mind, carrying a few extra pounds would mean that I had fallen short as a student and a person. Gaining weight would signify to everyone that I was either partying too much, stressed out of my mind, or simply not capable of making "good decisions" during my first year on my own. I wanted to thrive at college, and gaining weight was - in my naive and overly critical mind - a visible sign that I wasn't.

Sometimes I think I agonized over gaining weight so much that I manifested it into existence - and a lot more than just 15 pounds. It seemed every week during my first semester I added a new piece of clothing to an ongoing list of items that "felt a little tight" or "weren't fitting like they used to." I was steadily gaining more weight than I ever imagined I would. At my heaviest, I weighed about 50 pounds more than I had in high school. I often called my mom on the phone - sometimes crying, sometimes too embarrassed to admit just how insecure I was feeling - to talk through it with her. She would remind me that the number on the scale didn't mean anything. But I didn't believe her. In fact, I thought it meant exactly one thing: I was a failure.

Over time, I did lose some of the weight I had gained. My first semester was admittedly one of the hardest times of my life. I wasn't connecting with people the way I wanted, I missed my old friends, and I was struggling through a period of anxiety and depression brought on by so many changes. I can't say the weight gain was entirely related to that, but I should have given myself more grace.

As I started to settle into a better routine and grew more accustomed to college life, my weight slowly evened out. But I could never get myself back to the body I had in high school. Even when I was happy with the way I looked, there was always this little voice in the back of my head telling me, "But you used to look better." There was this constant narrative running through my mind that I needed to ditch all the weight I'd gained freshman year before I graduated, as if I was finishing school with a clean slate, exactly the way I started.

When I think of everything I've accomplished in this body these past three years, I wonder how I could be anything but proud.

For a long time, I fought with the idea that things were better the way they way before, instead of embracing everything ahead of me. I was using my weight as a physical anchor to the past, to some romanticized version of who I thought I was supposed to be. Now, as I prepare to enter my senior year, I realize how much I've changed since starting college, in more ways than one. I'm a better person now. Why would I want to go back to who I used to be?

I thought gaining weight at school meant I was a failure, that I didn't do something "right" during my time there. But when I think of everything I've accomplished in this body these past three years, I wonder how I could be anything but proud. I learned how to adapt, live on my own, make friends, manage my time, let loose, and have fun.

If people are meant to do one thing, it's change. Maybe we stick to our core values and inherent beliefs, but we're supposed to grow and evolve. That's what I did these past three years. Why should bodies be any different? I refuse to let my college experience be defined as "that time I was always trying to lose weight," or a period where I was grasping at an idealized memory. I'm so excited for my senior year, and I'm finally ready to dive into what's to come while appreciating where I've been. So sure, I don't look exactly how I used to, and I weigh more than I did in high school. But I've gained so much more than a few pounds, and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Experts Say We're Still in the First Wave of the Coronavirus Pandemic - Here's Why

When it comes to the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) across the US, Lisa Lockerd Maragakis, MD, MPH, wrote for Johns Hopkins Medicine that she wants us to visualize a patchwork quilt. "The COVID-19 pandemic in the US is affecting different areas throughout the country in different ways at different times," she explained. So, as for the prediction that cases would decline in the summer and a "second wave" would come in the fall, that's not what is happening. We're seeing a decline in some US states, while other areas, many of which were among the first to reopen, are currently seeing surges in cases - and two experts POPSUGAR spoke with clarify that, therefore, we're still in the first wave of this virus.

Why Experts Say We're Still in the First Wave of COVID-19

"We are not at the bottom of a curve where we have gotten our cases down to really low levels."

Anne Liu, MD, immunologist and infectious disease doctor with Stanford Health Care, told POPSUGAR that the concept of a second wave assumes that there was a "clean first wave," and she cannot say that we're clear of that first wave. Janet Baseman, PhD, MPH, associate dean of the school of public health and professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington, agreed. We haven't gotten the virus under control yet, and the increase of cases in states such as Florida means the first wave isn't over, she said.

Simply put, "we are really worried about places like Texas and Florida where we see numbers going up, the hospitalizations going up, ICUs filling up, and that is not their second wave," Dr. Liu explained. Aside from the fact that respiratory viruses tend to drop-off in the summer - which isn't happening with COVID-19 - originally, the discussions of a second wave come fall were charged by the fact that people spend more time indoors and schools pick back up, Dr. Baseman said. A spike in cases because of that could still happen, she told POPSUGAR, but "our first wave has not been contained. We are not at the bottom of a curve where we have gotten our cases down to really low levels."

Both doctors pointed to the fact that we don't have universal strict measures across the country as a whole. "If you look at the new cases graphs for other countries where measures have been applied more uniformly, there is more of an up and a down," Dr. Liu said. Here's a graphic of the downward curves in France and Italy, according to data collected by The New York Times. Here, in comparison, is a chart of US cases, where the curve continues to go up.

And, Dr. Liu further explained in a previous interview with POPSUGAR that in places where public health messaging has been more clear about physical distancing and wearing masks - mask mandates, for example - there tends to be less spikes in cases. Other factors such as having more people per household in your community and also having a higher concentration of essential workers, come into play as well, she said.

Despite government recommendations on opening up America in phases, "what our phases of opening and closing look like are actually completely different across the country," Dr. Baseman said. "What the policies are, are completely different. What the mandates are, are completely different. It's really kind of a patchwork approach because there's not a national approach." She further said that she believes places like Florida reopening as far back as May has a direct correlation with the increase in COVID-19 cases.

Is It Guaranteed That Cases Will Surge When Places Open Up?

Depending on where you are, there may or may not be an increase in cases with reopening in the near future, or if your area were to go back into a "lockdown" mode and then reopen later on, Dr. Baseman said. Parts of our country that have not seen a high level of cases tend to be more remote areas, and therefore it's possible that those areas might not see any cases with reopening, she explained. Furthermore, spikes in cases after reopening is not inevitable in every single community, but in general, there will be outbreaks as people come together again until we achieve herd immunity, where a high percentage of the population is immune, she said. (Note: the duration of human immunity to COVID-19 is still unknown.)

That being said, what we've learned from states that were the first to open up and are now seeing an increase in cases is that "you can't just flip a switch and have everything go back to normal," Dr. Baseman said. "Imagine a situation where community-level mixing comes almost to a halt," she continued (like the lockdowns that many places had at the start of the epidemic in the US). "The case numbers come down, and what that helps us to do in addition to keeping people from getting sick and saving lives, is we get a handle on reopening so that our infrastructure can hopefully help to prevent the transmissions that will inevitably happen here and there."

Doing testing, case investigations, and contact tracing to interrupt future chains of transmission is much easier to execute when there are lower numbers of cases than in places where cases are high, Dr. Baseman explained. "It's really hard to do all of those things that you need to be doing when you are just completely overwhelmed with cases." The key is slow reopening: "a faucet, not a switch," she stated.

As you slowly reopen, you are able to keep up with the cases that you've identified, "either in a household or in a community or associated with an event. You test those people. You do case investigation and contact tracing in order to get people to do the self and community protective behaviors that could then help us all prevent the next generation of transmissions," Dr. Baseman explained. "You've got to open the faucet slowly so that you can make sure that that all of your systems can handle what's coming out of the faucet, rather than flipping a switch."

What Can We Do?

Keep taking a "layered" approached, Dr. Baseman said. "None of these biggest public health measures alone solves our problem. Not the six-foot rule, not the wear-a-mask rule, not the do-outdoors-more-and-indoors-less rule, hand-washing . . . none of those things by themselves is going to keep people from getting sick." So, practice all of them. Wash your hands, physically distance from people, and wear a mask when in public, especially in crowded indoor settings with poor ventilation.

Dr. Baseman applauded the CDC director's comments in mid July that urged universal masking across the US, given the fact that masks are proven to help mitigate the spread of the virus. Masking, though, has become politicized, she said, so she doesn't know if universal masking all around the country can be achieved. Regardless, "I think it's still worth doing, because it's really important that we get a handle on this using any strategy that we can that is evidence based," she noted, adding that she's very practically-minded about COVID-19. Bottom line? "We've got to get it under control, and it's not under control."

POPSUGAR aims to give you the most accurate and up-to-date information about the coronavirus, but details and recommendations about this pandemic may have changed since publication. For the latest information on COVID-19, please check out resources from the WHO, CDC, and local public health departments.

A Royal Scrapbook of All the Birthday Portraits Kate Middleton Has Snapped of Her Family

The British royal family are known for their many traditions. While most of them are pretty formal and require certain protocol, there's one simple yet sweet tradition in particular that we look forward to every year: Kate Middleton's family birthday portraits. To commemorate a royal's special day, the palace typically releases a new batch of portraits, giving the public a more intimate glimpse at their personal life. Usually, a photographer is hired to snap these palace-approved photos, but ever since, Princess Charlotte's first birthday in 2016, the Duchess of Cambridge has put her photography skills to use and made it a tradition to take these portraits for Charlotte, Prince George, and Prince Louis.

Most recently, Kensington Palace shared some adorable snaps of George for his 7th birthday. Ahead, take a look at all the precious birthday portraits Kate has shared of her family over the years.

Virtual Doulas Help Moms Get On-Demand Care - Here's Everything You Need to Know

New parents often have to rely on books, family, and the internet to figure out life with their new bundle of joy. But there may be more than that now, as virtual doula services change the landscape of maternity care by electronically connecting new parents with certified doulas to provide support leading up to and throughout the fourth trimester. Here's what you need to know.

What is a doula?

A doula is a non-medical expert explicitly trained to provide physical and emotional support to a mother before, during, and after childbirth. Services include birth planning and labor assistance, like position changes and breathing techniques, and postpartum support for breastfeeding, postnatal body care, baby care, and the emotional ups and downs of being a new mom.

Traditionally, doula services are carried out in person, with doulas attending doctor appointments, assisting during the birth, and visiting mommy and baby afterwards at home. However, there is a growing number of doulas now offering their services virtually via videos sessions and texting, giving them the ability to support families regardless of location, time, or hospital restrictions.

What are a doula's qualifications?

Doulas are certified through birth work agencies like DONA International, Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association, Pro Doula, and Birth Arts International. Certifications include Certified Labor Doula, Certified Postpartum Doula, Certified Childbirth Educator, and Certified Midwife Assistant. Many have additional certifications or training in lactation, perinatal depression and anxiety, pregnancy fitness, infant care, and babywearing.

What are the benefits of using a doula?

Research has shown that using a birth doula can result in shorter duration of labor, decrease in cesarian births, and decrease in use of Pitocin or pain medication. Furthermore, doulas have proven to be particularly helpful for socially disadvantaged mother at-risk for adverse birth outcomes, resulting in a decrease in birth complications for mother and baby, decrease in low birth weight babies, and increase in the ability to initiate breastfeeding.

Nicole Williams, a birth doula and certified health and wellness coach in New Jersey, explains that doulas can help even the odds for black women, who are two to six times more likely to die during childbirth than white women, by listening to the mother and speaking up on her behalf when she feels like something is wrong. "There are times when these cries can go unheard and doulas serve as effective advocates and liaisons between the parents and medical staff," she told POPSUGAR.

Mandy Major, PCD, Co-Founder and CEO of postpartum doula agency Major Care, says the service fills an important gap in the system of postpartum care for new parents. "When you look at our current set up, you basically have established medical care on one side, like ob-gyns and pediatricians, and well-intentioned strangers in online groups on the other," she told POPSUGAR. "The former is not trained and/or on-call to help you with your day-to-day questions, and the latter is very helpful and useful but not always providing accurate information."

How do virtual services differ from traditional in-person?

Many doulas have been offering virtual services for years as a way to be more accessible to their clients regardless of distance or time of day/night. Hospital and social restrictions due to COVID-19, as well as an overall increased need for convenient support, has resulted in more families opting for virtual care over in-person.

Ursula Sukinik, CD, CDT, CMA, CBE, CLC, Founder and CEO of Birth You Desire, says one of the most impactful benefits of virtual services is the ability to check-in with clients and see what's happening in real time without having to travel to homes or hospitals. Her agency adopted a virtual component ten years ago to be present with clients during medical procedures or tests (IVF, ECV, etc.), routine and non-routine doctor visits, early labor, and in the event of emergency situations, like snow and ice storms. "We can literally be with you at all times," she says.

Chelisa Clifton CLD, CPD, CBE, NCS, a doula in Cincinnati, offers both in-person and virtual services. She told POSUGAR the biggest drawback to virtual services is not being able to physically help with position changes during labor or allowing mom to sleep while she cares for the baby once they're home from the hospital.

However, she says a benefit to virtual services is that in her absence, she leans on the partner to be her hands, instructing him/her how to rub mom's lower back, cool her head, or reposition her for more comfort. "This not only provides the physical touch that's so important during labor, but also allows the couple to experience birth in a very empowered, intimate way," she explains to POPSUGAR.

Ursula has received similar feedback from clients that partners are enjoying being more involved during labor. "These same partners report that it is easier for them to bond with their babies due to being 'on' during the birth," she says.

How do virtual doula services work?

Service models and pricing vary per doula and agency. Most doulas offer different virtual birth and/or postpartum packages that include a set number of calls/video sessions. Some also offer unlimited text/email.

For example, Williams, in New Jersey, offers a straightforward fee per virtual session model, while Clifton's Full-Service Virtual Birth Doula package in Cincinati costs $600, and includes a combination of prenatal video sessions, text/email support, on-call phone support during labor, and a postpartum video session. With Major Care, you choose between three different care plans, starting at $4.90 per day, that offer a variety of texting and video postpartum support.

It is important to find a doula that meets your needs and brings you comfort. DONA International, Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association, and Birth Arts International all offer directories to help you find a qualified doula.

Wine and Cheez-It Boxes Are Back, and This Time They're Pairing White Cheddar With Rosé

If you're a fan of a nice glass of wine and a cheeseboard, please allow us to introduce you to its snacking counterpart: a boxed wine and Cheez-It combo. The genius minds at Kellogg and House Wine put their brains together last summer to create a dual-sided pack that features a split between wine and the original cheddar cheese snack you know and love. Mark your calendars: You can snag a pack for yourself for $30 on July 23 at 2 p.m. ET on the House Wine website, while supplies last. They're bound to sell fast, just like last year. Ready, snack, go!

The Absolute Best Sunscreens to Protect Your Tattoos From Fading

Protecting your skin from UV rays is an important step in any skin-care routine all year long, but in the summer months - when sitting in the sun for hours at a time isn't out of the norm - it's vital to apply (and reapply) your sunscreen - especially on tattooed skin. Without proper protection, the sun can dull a tattoo's colors and cause it to fade much quicker over time, effectively ruining the tat you likely spent a pretty penny on.

To ensure that your tattoo is protected from the sun, all you need is a safe lotion or spray sunscreen that, spoiler alert, you can use on the rest of your body. That's right, tattoos - whether super tiny or covering your entire body - don't need anything special when it comes to sun care, so whatever you use on your body is perfect for coating your ink with.

That said, based on effectiveness, price, and user reviews, we've rounded up some of the best sunscreens on the market for all skin tones and types to help protect all of your skin from the sun's harmful (but oh-so-sweet) rays. And if you're more into physical blockers, like zinc oxide, we've got you covered there, too.

Perfect For Poolside Sipping, This CBD Colada Will Keep You Refreshed All Summer Long

During the warmer months, mixing up a thirst-quenching tropical drink is a fantastic way to keep your palate refreshed while enjoying endless days of sunshine. If you're a fan of coconut and pineapple, these tasty fruits can be blended together to create the perfect cocktail: the piña colada. While alcohol can be dehydrating, there are other creative ways to enhance this classic summer drink. Skip the booze and create a CBD colada!

This CBD colada is smooth, creamy, and delicious. It's also easy to make with just fresh-cut pineapple, pineapple juice, coconut, fresh-squeezed lime juice, and hemp-derived CBD. Because this drink contains zero alcohol, it has fewer calories than the standard piña colada, plus it won't leave you with a hangover. Cheers to that!

If you're new to mixing CBD into blended drinks, don't worry - it's incredibly simple. As long as you have your favorite unflavored CBD tincture on hand, simply add your preferred dose into the blender with the other ingredients and blend away! Unlike THC, when consuming CBD, you don't need to worry about getting high because cannabidiol is nonpsychotropic. However, start on the lower side of the dosage range (between 2.5 to 25 milligrams CBD per drink), especially if you're new to CBD. And always speak with your healthcare provider before mixing CBD with other medications, which is not recommended.

I hope you're ready to make this refreshing CBD-infused drink! Keep reading for the recipe.

CBD Colada

By Jamie Evans, Founder of The Herb Somm and Author of The Ultimate Guide to CBD

Notes

For best results, use a full-spectrum hemp-derived CBD tincture of your choice at your preferred dose. Just be sure the tincture is unflavored so it doesn’t compromise the flavor of the drink.

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup fresh organic pineapple, skin removed and cut into cubes
    2 ounces pineapple juice
    1 ounce unsweetened coconut milk
2 tablespoons cream of coconut (Coco Lopez recommended)
    1 teaspoon fresh-squeezed lime juice
1 dropper full (or your preferred dose) unflavored full-spectrum hemp CBD oil tincture
    1 cup ice
Garnish with a pineapple leaf, slice of pineapple, and a pink flower and/or fresh-cut hemp leaf

Directions

  1. Combine the fresh-cut pineapple, pineapple juice, unsweetened coconut milk, cream of coconut, and lime juice in the bottom of a blender.
  2. Using your favorite unflavored CBD tincture, add a dropper full (or your preferred dose) on top of the other ingredients. Add the ice, then blend on high until the drink is smooth and creamy.
  3. Pour the CBD colada into a drinking glass of your choice, then garnish with a pineapple leaf, slice of pineapple, and a pink flower. If you have fresh-cut hemp leaves on hand, add a leaf for some extra flair, then serve immediately.
