Trying to Cut Back on Sugar? For Ice Cream Cravings, Make This 4-Ingredient Nice Cream

There's an ice cream shop down the street that offers dairy-free creemees (lucky, I know!), and I recently took my kids there for a summer treat. They both got raspberry and although I try not to eat sugar because it bothers my stomach and makes me break out, when your seven-year-old holds up their cone with a huge smile and offers to share, you take a lick! It immediately kicked in my ice cream cravings, so when we got home, I pulled out my Vitamix and whipped up this plant-based, sugar-free berry banana ice cream.

You only need four ingredients: frozen banana, frozen strawberries, and frozen raspberries, and a little unsweetened vanilla soy milk and this tasted so much like my kids' creemees, but I actually liked it more because it wasn't sickeningly sweet. Even my kids loved it and wanted their own bowls!

I topped mine with fresh fruit, but you could also add frozen fruit, nuts, shredded coconut, granola, or chocolate chips. It satisfied my sugar cravings, I felt energized and not at all bloated, even after a huge bowl, and love that a serving offers over seven grams of fiber and five grams of protein.

This superquick ice cream tastes best right after it's made, but you can also freeze extras for later - just leave it out to thaw for 30 minutes to get that soft consistency.

Let's Discuss How Cute Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Her Girlfriend CLAY Are, Shall We?

Maisie Richardson-Sellers plays a seemingly-perfect college student named Chloe in Netflix's The Kissing Booth 2, and if you're wondering about her current relationship status, the 28-year-old actress is happily taken. Maisie has been dating LA soul singer CLAY for almost four years now after the two met at a party. "She's the best! I am honestly inspired by her every single day and feel so grateful to have her in my life," CLAY gushed to Ones to Watch back in 2019. "We met at a party that neither of us particularly wanted to be at. It's always the case, I suppose, to encounter something [or] someone amazing when you're least expecting it." Funny how that happens, huh?

Though Maisie is an actress and CLAY is a musician, the two teamed up last year for CLAY's "Project 5" video. Maisie directed and edited the visual, which spotlights the LGBTQ+ community. "We noticed that we were constantly brainstorming and bouncing ideas off of each other, and decided to explore that dynamic on a project," Maisie told Diva magazine about how the video came to be. "This one was the perfect place to start! It's been fantastic, especially because we know each other so well that there is an effortless flow and trust. We have several more collaborations in the works, so watch this space." We can't wait to see what else Maisie and CLAY have in store for us, but in the meantime, see their sweetest moments ahead.

If You're New to Meditation, Here Are Some Ways to Start When You're Stressed

Meditation is hard - Molly Birkholm, stress management consultant and yoga and meditation teacher, knows this first hand. She was introduced to meditation after experiencing a near-fatal car crash. While she learned to use this practice to heal her own PTSD, it was not easy to get into. "Initially, I found it very difficult to do silent meditation," Birkholm told POPSUGAR. "It just seemed like my mind went straight to the to-do list, or as I call it, the 'Top 10 Favorite Playlist of Thoughts That You Can't Stop Yourself From Thinking.'"

Birkholm quit her job four years after the crash to study around Asia, where she eventually completed her teacher training in Sivananda Yoga. She teaches private retreats for corporate clients and has worked with veterans and military personnel through the organization Warriors at Ease, which offers trauma-sensitive yoga and meditation programs. For Integrative Restoration (iRest) Institute, she leads practices of yoga nidra, a form of guided relaxation that brings you into a state of meditation. Birkholm classifies it as a mindfulness form of meditation as opposed to a "concentration" style focused on silence.

Mindfulness meditation, which yoga nidra is a part of "is more of a tool to cultivate a sense of self-awareness, where you're aware of your body, aware of your breath, aware of your emotions, your feelings, your beliefs, your thoughts, but you're staying connected to a state of peace," Birkholm explained. "So you can think of mindfulness meditation as more like someone taking you by the hand and saying, 'Now we're going to go on a little tour of what's present for you in this moment.'"

Birkholm further explained, "A lot of times, people who just start meditating are people who are in a state of heightened stress or hyper-vigilance. If they try the concentration forms of meditation, they could end up feeling like they're failing or doing it wrong because the mind doesn't silence right away." That being said, if you have trouble sleeping or you feel anxious or depressed, meditation could be highly effective for helping alleviate that, she said, explaining that you don't necessarily need to feel as though you're going through trauma, like she did, to start.

"You're really more able to meet life on life's terms and find that sense of effortless power instead of powerful effort that really tends to drain us."

Ways to Meditate For Stress Relief

Birkholm said that beginners should aim to meditate at least 20 minutes a day, whenever is convenient for them. They should also be consistent with it - try to meditate for two weeks or set a goal for a whole month. She said that even if you feel like you won't have time for this practice, you may come to realize that you're more efficient in the tasks you do each day because of it, and you'll want to make time. "You're really more able to meet life on life's terms and find that sense of effortless power instead of powerful effort that really tends to drain us."

Silent Meditation

This is the concentration style of meditation that Birkholm was talking about before. She would recommend starting with some deep breathing and taking time to observe the physical sensation of the body, the breath, and the mind. Anytime something arises in the mind, notice where you feel tension in your body. If you're not able to get into this form meditation, she suggests using guided meditation, specifically yoga nidra sessions, to help you reach a level of relaxation.

Guided Meditation

Birkholm's 24-session iRest: Integrative Restoration Yoga Nidra For Deep Relaxation course is available for purchase on The Great Courses website. She also has downloadable audio files that will lead you through iRest yoga nidra practices on her own website (all for $9 right now). Plus, here's a roundup of guided meditation videos you can try that aren't labeled as yoga nidra but are meant to help you de-stress.

Don't Know Where to Start? Try Focusing on Your Breath

One breathing technique that Birkholm highlighted is a simple task of making your exhalation longer than your inhalation. Take deep breaths into the belly and up into the chest, then have a drawn-out exhale and pull your belly in. Everyone's breathing tempo is different, so she suggests first counting how long your inhale is and how long your exhale is. Then, add two, three, or four seconds to the exhale. "You can eventually work up to doubling the exhale over the inhale, but at first that might be overwhelming for people, so I would start just by adding a few seconds and really mellowing that breath out," she said.

Another breath Birkholm talked about was something called the "Ferris wheel breath," where you picture a long narrow Ferris wheel that runs up and down your spine. "On the inhale, you breathe up the front side of your spine. You notice that moment of transition at the top, where the inhale becomes an exhale, and then you exhale down your spine. You notice that moment of transition at the bottom, and then you inhale up the front side of your spine again," she explained.

Giving people that visualization helps them focus on their breathing, especially if they're having a difficult time getting into silent meditation, Birkholm said. "We use these techniques because the mind is like a bird that doesn't have a place to land. And if you give it a mantra or you give it a breath or you give it a visual, it'll land."

I Rediscovered the Joys of Watercolor Painting, and It's Been a Lifesaver While Stuck at Home

Some have taken up puzzles, others have developed bread-baking obsessions, and many have relied on Netflix to help pass the extra time at home lately. While I've certainly done my fair share of binge-watching the past few months (Insecure? Check. Outer Banks? Check. Never Have I Ever? Check.), my go-to activity when I need a screen-time break has been watercolor painting. It's a hobby I've dabbled in here and there since college, and rediscovering my pad of paper, paint set, and brushes has been an absolute lifesaver in these uncertain times.

As soon as I dip a brush in water, swirl it around in one of the dried paints, and drag it across a blank page, all tension instantly melts away. I let my mind wander - far away from petty Twitter feuds, disheartening news stories, and fleeting TikTok trends - and focus on letting the creative juices flow freely. Yes, it's as soothing as it sounds - a true salve for my dwindling sanity.

I'm here to make a case for taking up watercolors, should anyone out there need a break from stinky sourdough starters and Sex and the City reruns.

Now, I'm not a watercolor paint pro in any way, shape, or form. I've never bothered researching the expert lingo, and many of my paintings are basic at best. But for me, it's all about the process of secluding myself from outside distractions, zeroing in on the beauty and depth of the colors, and creating something that's uniquely mine. I'm here to share the joys of the nostalgic pastime and make a case for taking up watercolors, should anyone out there need a break from stinky sourdough starters or Sex and the City reruns. Read ahead for my beginner-friendly tips, favorite products, and more.

A'ja Wilson Gets Candid About the Return of the WNBA, Her Mental Health, and Social Justice

Athletes are constantly being told to stay in their lane, but the truth is, the greatest athletes are doing and have always done the exact opposite. They've transformed their sport while advocating for those who often get overlooked, they've become activists, and they've always done things on their own terms. A'ja Wilson, a professional basketball player for the Las Vegas Aces, is the embodiment of this. She speaks to the latest Nike women's basketball line, Swooshfly, a collection of essential items which she is sure will "be huge in a couple of months when women really start to dial into what it is," she tells POPSUGAR; and effortlessly pivots to more pressing issues like the return of the WNBA, how the coronavirus pandemic impacted her mental health, and racial and social justice.

When asked what sets the Swooshfly collection apart from previous drops, she answers with: "It's something that fits the woman's body, and that's what I love the most." She emphasizes how well the pieces fit and loves the colorway - which she says is better than the men's selection of gear, and most importantly, "It's something for us women."

After talking about our love for fitness apparel, we switch gears, discussing how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted her day-to-day and training. "The first time that it actually hit me that there was something really big going on was probably after NBA All-Star Weekend," Wilson said. When games started to get canceled, she realized that "this is something real, this is something that we have to take seriously because we don't know what's next." Like most, she describes the initial period of sheltering in place as being "very tough to get a grip of" because her routine was completely upended. "It was hard for me to find motivation because I don't know what my finish line is, I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel," she explained.

Although her routine was disrupted and her motivation was low, "I kind of got a better understanding of who I am as a woman, and I got to prioritize different things," like virtually spending more time with her family. One positive is that "It really helped me look on the bright side of everything. . . . But it was definitely different because I didn't have that routine that I wanted . . . but safety is the number one thing and that's what I had to get a better understanding of."

"My mental health was definitely tested and is probably still being tested."

Social isolation, economic stressors, and health concerns are connected to increased mental health conditions, with the World Health Organization warning of a "massive increase in mental health conditions in the coming months," in May. "My mental health was definitely tested and is probably still being tested throughout everything that went on in the past couple of months," Wilson said openly. "It was very, very hard for me because I couldn't turn to my outlet which was sports, which was basketball."

To channel her emotions, Wilson said she had to "understand that I was not in this alone" when it came to anxiety, depression, fear of the unknown, and the other emotions she experienced. She also said having a support system was helpful and enabled her to express herself "because everything wasn't bottled up." These emotions compounded with racism in America and other race issues were "very, very hard for me to come to grips with who I was as a Black woman," she continued, but being able to share what she was experiencing with people like her parents helped her mental health.

"I feel like I'm put on this earth to do that - to speak up for the next generation, to speak up for that young Black girl."

In addition to candidly speaking about her mental health, Wilson doesn't shy away from discussing racial and social justice. "I feel like it's a part of me," she says. "It's a part of me to demand change amongst everyone else." She knows that her fans and supporters are always listening, explaining, "The biggest thing with me is just being a voice for the voiceless. . . . I feel like I'm put on this earth to do that - to speak up for the next generation, to speak up for that young Black girl." Being both a woman and Black "is a tough battle" but it's what fuels her to continue fighting.

As the WNBA season returns, Wilson is excited to use basketball to show what they as a league and as individuals represent and stand for with the WNBA dedicating the 2020 season to social justice and honoring the Black Lives Matter movement and the #SAYHERNAME campaign. "This isn't just a hashtag. . . . We're all in it and we demand change."

This TikToker Uses Fruit to Explain Bra Sister Sizes, and Wow, It All Makes Sense Now

As a bra-wearer for well over a decade, I'm not proud to confess that I'm still very confused by bras. I already know I've been wearing them wrong my whole life (and have yet to correct my ways) and I admittedly just purchase the same bras over and over again, even if they're not the most comfortable. Turns out, I'm not the only one, because TikTok user @madisonanneh's bra explainer videos have gone viral on the platform for enlightening people on their everyday undergarments. In one genius video posted on Tuesday, Madison broke down sister sizing, explaining the difference between band and cup sizes using a very helpful visual: fruits.

Yep, Madison used a lemon, lime, and apples to demonstrate exactly how sister sizing works, and how you can use it to find the perfect bra to fit your unique breast shape. "As the band size is increasing, the cup is getting bigger," she said simply. If your 34D bra feels a little too big in the band, you might be inclined to swap it for a 32D. But Madison explained that actually, the cups for those two sizes are totally different - it's like comparing an apple and a lemon. You'd instead want to find a sister size that holds the same amount of volume as your 34D, which would be 36C or 32DD/E. "You can't be trying to fit apples in bras made for lemons," she said.

Watch Madison's descriptive TikTok above, and if you're still confused and need a little more context, check out this chart on the different sister size families to figure out what bra might fit you best.

There's More to Walter Mercado and Bill Bakula's Dispute Than We See in Mucho Mucho Amor

Despite all the positivity Walter Mercado Salinas spread to those around him, his life definitely wasn't free from hardship. If you haven't watched it yet, Netflix's documentary Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado tells the story of the late Latinx astrologer, who became a clairvoyant icon through his weekly astrology TV show and 50-year career. Mercado became just as well-known for his sweet, trusting nature as his sparkly capes, and sadly, his unwavering faith in others ultimately led to the biggest downfall in his career. Wondering what exactly went down between Mercado and his former manager, Guillermo "Bill" Bakula? Here's the reason their relationship soured.

Like many others, Bakula was first introduced to Mercado by seeing him on the small screen. Intrigued, Bakula booked a consultation with Mercado to read his birth chart. At the end of the session, Bakula revealed his ulterior motive: he wanted to pitch a new TV show with Mercado as the star. Mercado agreed, and Bakula went on to help Mercado shape his career throughout the late '80s and early '90s. As Mercado explained in Mucho Mucho Amor, Bakula opened many new doors for the psychic, and Mercado credits Bakula with propelling him to stardom.

Unfortunately, the partnership and friendship didn't last. In 2006, Mercado became dissatisfied by Bakula consistently reusing his old material, and he decided it was time to seek new management. At the time, Mercado told Primera Hora, "I have legal problems with a former manager of mine, who runs a number of fraudulent commercials using my name without rights, and [Univision] wanted me to ignore them, even though the advertisements feature a photograph I took five years ago and have nothing to do with me. I can not fool my audience and so I decided to say goodbye."

Little did Mercado know that, 11 years earlier, he had unwittingly signed a contract that gave Bakula the right to Mercado's name, likeness, and image. Though Bakula reportedly claimed that Mercado knew what he was signing back in 1995, Mercado argued that - because he trusted his former manager as a friend - he signed the contract without ever reading it. What followed was a six-year trademark dispute, during which Mercado was barred from using his name. As a result, Univision was eventually forced to cancel his segment on Primer Impacto.

The lengthy legal battle took a significant toll on Mercado, both financially and emotionally. In the documentary, it's explained that - in addition to being off the air - Mercado didn't receive any payment and wasn't able conduct any business during those six years. In December 2011, Mercado finally regained his rights, but just days after the decision was made, Mercado suffered a heart attack. He eventually recovered, but his career did not. After disappearing from the public eye for so long, Mercado had trouble building his fan base again, and he was never able to make a true comeback. Unsurprisingly, his relationship with Bakula also failed to recover following the lawsuit.

#ShareTheMedicalMic: Follow the Campaign Amplifying Black Women in Medicine

After the success of #ShareTheMicNow, an initiative aimed at expanding the dialogue around racial justice, two female physicians have launched a similar campaign to amplify Black voices in medicine. On July 22, the #ShareTheMedicalMic hashtag on Instagram was filled with posts from Black women physicians, in an effort to shed light on the racial disparities that still exist in health care.

The initiative was launched by doctors Renee Paro and Lauren Powell. Forty women from a variety of specialties signed over their Instagram accounts in order to give their Black colleagues a platform to discuss some of the most pressing issues facing the Black community, including health conditions that disproportionately claim the lives of Black women, like heart disease and maternal mortality. Just as important, the campaign brings attention to the lack of diversity and representation in medicine, and the ways racism seeps into the healthcare system.

We encourage you to explore the #ShareTheMedicalMic hashtag. Read, listen, and educate yourself on the topics presented, and be sure to follow the Black doctors who were involved in the campaign. Ahead, you'll find a full list of the doctors who participated, as well as a glimpse of some of the conversations sparked by this initiative. The names of the Black women who participated are listed first, followed by the women whose Instagram profiles they spoke from:
