Plyo Training Will Have You Burning Calories Even After Your Workout Is Over
Plyo (plyometric) training - also known as jump training - could be the answer to your fitness-plateau woes.
This high-intensity workout method is all about quick, explosive movements that stretch a targeted muscle group before immediately (and quickly!) contracting that same muscle, NASM-certified personal trainer Theresa Swigert said.
The overall goal of plyo training is to exert the maximum amount of force or power in as short of an interval as possible, she added.
By incorporating this method into your fitness routine one to three times a week (since plyo is a high-intensity workout, any more could put you at risk of an overuse injury), you're opening yourself up to a diverse set of benefits.
Want to improve your speed and reaction time? Swigert said that the explosive nature of plyo training does just that.
Plus, you can increase your power output thanks to the force required to execute plyo movements. The result: eventually upgrading your weightlifting sessions with small reps of heavier loads, she noted.
Improved endurance makes the pros list, too, thanks to increased strength in the muscles and cardiovascular system.
Swigert also mentioned that your resting metabolic rate can increase, as well; even in a resting state, your body continues to burn calories after your workout is complete.
As for the cons of plyo, Swigert said that there are no real disadvantages as long as you are injury-free, limit your sessions to accommodate adequate recovery between workouts, and are proficient with standard bodyweight movements.
In fact, Swigert said that plyo workouts can be beneficial for injury prevention.
"Most injuries occur from the body experiencing an unpredictable pattern or situation. Because plyo training involves generating, accepting, and redirecting power, the body is better capable of handling unpredictable patterns," Swigert said. "Additionally, plyo is unique in that many exercises involve generating power at a muscle's weakest point. Due to this, muscles gain strength at their weakest point, which is excellent for preventing injuries."
And if the words "jump training" and "high-intensity" still have you concerned for your joint health, Swigert wants you to know that there are still benefits to modifying plyo movements by removing impact.
She used jump squats as an example: by explosively lifting from the squat position to the toes instead of jumping, you can still generate more power and elevate the heart rate more than a standard air squat.
Swigert's rule of thumb for beginners is to remove the explosive element from any plyo exercise you are going to do and check for pain - if you experience discomfort, you shouldn't continue with the high-impact modification.
For example, Swigert said, "jump lunges should only be performed when a standard reverse lunge can be executed while keeping the front foot flat to the ground, the chest lifted, and no pain in the knees."
Intrigued? Ahead, Swigert shared two exercises to exemplify how this fitness method works and possibly start you on your plyo training journey.
Standing Broad Jump
Targeting your glutes and hamstrings - which Swigert said are commonly weaker muscle groups for those who spend a lot of their day seated in a chair - is easy thanks to standing broad jumps.
- Begin with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Drive your hips back and tip your chest forward before explosively driving your hips forward and jumping as far as you can while landing softly.
Depth Jumps
According to Swigert, depth jumps are designed to increase your vertical jump height.
- Begin standing on a box.
- Drop off the box, absorb the impact briefly, and aim to jump immediately back on the box as quickly as possible.
- This move can be progressed easily by starting on a low box and increasing box height over time.

This No-Equipment, 30-Minute HIIT Workout Can Help You Burn Major Calories From Home
If you're short on time and space but still want to exercise, you'll be hard-pressed to find a workout more effective than high-intensity interval training (HIIT). By combining short bursts of effort with even shorter rest times, you'll be able to push your limits, increase endurance, and burn more fat than you would with steady-state cardio.
But perhaps the biggest perk is that you can accomplish all of this in 30 minutes or less. See for yourself with this HIIT routine from trainer Raneir Pollard. Any small room will do, and you'll be using your own body weight, so you don't need any equipment.
30-Minute, No-Equipment HIIT Workout
Directions: You'll do three rounds of this workout, which consists of five moves total. For the first round, do each exercise for 40 seconds and rest between each move for 20 seconds. During the second round, aim for 50 seconds of work with 30 seconds of rest, and in the final round, one minute of work with 40 seconds of rest. Don't forget to warm up with some dynamic stretches and cool down with some soothing static stretches.
Exercises:
- 180 jumps
- Mountain climbers
- Superman to plank
- Reverse lunge with a twist
- High knees

Music Mood Board: Reflecting on Love and Genuine Human Connection
I've been thinking a lot about human connection lately - what it means to love and be loved, what it means to spend your time on this Earth with someone who cherishes the real you. It's something I've pondered long before this epoch of self-isolation and social distancing, but maybe spending so much time alone has made me confront it more profoundly. Regardless, my postulations about relationships of any sort - romantic, platonic, anything in the middle - have deepened.
I've reflected on how people develop authentic bonds and the double-edged sword of forming that connection. It's a beautiful thing to find someone who values you and wants to be around you, but it's also terrifying. It's scary trusting someone with your sensibilities and developing an interdependence. Because, one day, that person might decide to disconnect from what you thought was a good thing. And few things are as psychologically painful as feeling like your existence is an obstruction or an inadequacy.
As someone who's pretty guarded, I often cite the fear of hurt and rejection as reasons to keep my emotions in a glass box - visible, but barricaded. It's the bleak side of the human connection coin. However, I've recently become more intrigued by the rosy facet of intimacy that makes vulnerability worthwhile. The journey of finding a genuine soulmate definitely has bumps in the road, but I don't think I'm nearly as scared of those setbacks as I used to be. This is something I've personally grasped in terms of romance, but the concept of wholly and lovingly connecting with someone can apply to friendships, familial relationships, etc. It's wonderfully universal, which is why the songs ahead have been on repeat this past week.
18 Photos That Prove Sabrina Carpenter and Joey King Practically Invented Dynamic Duos
If there's one thing we can appreciate, it's a dynamic duo with great style and a flair for the hilarious. Actresses Joey King and Sabrina Carpenter haven't shared the big screen (yet), but the antics they get up to on social media are more than enough to have us envying their close friendship. From Joey starring in Sabrina's music video for "Sue Me" to their adorable poses on the red carpet and dubsmash duet videos, they're giving us serious friendship goal vibes.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Joey revealed that the two have known one another for over 10 years, but only became close within the last "four or five" years. And to bring home the tightness of their bond, Sabrina left a video for her friend, telling her that she loved her and that she looks really pretty. Honestly, what more could you ask for? After you've sent a text to your best friend demanding they tell you that you're cute (it's the least they could do), check out some of Joey and Sabrina's cutest friendship moments ahead!

Let's Discuss How Cute Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Her Girlfriend CLAY Are, Shall We?
Maisie Richardson-Sellers plays a seemingly perfect college student named Chloe in Netflix's The Kissing Booth 2, and if you're wondering about her current relationship status, the 28-year-old actress is happily taken. Maisie has been dating LA soul singer CLAY for almost four years now after the two met at a party. "She's the best! I am honestly inspired by her every single day and feel so grateful to have her in my life," CLAY gushed to Ones to Watch back in 2019. "We met at a party that neither of us particularly wanted to be at. It's always the case, I suppose, to encounter something [or] someone amazing when you're least expecting it." Funny how that happens, huh?
Though Maisie is an actress and CLAY is a musician, the two teamed up last year for CLAY's "Project 5" video. Maisie directed and edited the visual, which spotlights the LGBTQ+ community. "We noticed that we were constantly brainstorming and bouncing ideas off of each other, and decided to explore that dynamic on a project," Maisie told Diva magazine about how the video came to be. "This one was the perfect place to start! It's been fantastic, especially because we know each other so well that there is an effortless flow and trust. We have several more collaborations in the works, so watch this space." We can't wait to see what else Maisie and CLAY have in store for us, but in the meantime, see their sweetest moments ahead.

This Song Is the Only Thing That Helps Me Fall Asleep When I'm Feeling Overwhelmed
Sleep has always been - and always will be - a top priority of mine. I depend on sleep (and coffee) to help me function throughout the day, and if I don't get enough, my productivity suffers. But sometimes stress and anxiety get in the way of my slumber, and I find myself lying awake in the wee hours of the morning. Usually, I can pinpoint the source of my anxiety and restlessness. However, it's not always so simple.
In today's climate, there are plenty of reasons to feel overwhelmed. I try my best to turn off my brain once my head hits the pillow, but that's not always possible. If other remedies like reading, using a weighted blanket, or adding extra pillows don't work, there's always one trick I can rely on to help me fall asleep: listening to music. In fact, there's one specific song I play on repeat.
I'm unsure when "To Build a Home" by The Cinematic Orchestra, featuring Patrick Watson, officially became my magic sleeping spell - but over time, I found myself gravitating to this song, and it eventually became a habit.
It's six minutes and 10 seconds of pure orchestra perfection. Watson's soothing voice, playing over a backdrop of piano chords, instantly puts me at ease and helps me reset my breathing and heart rate. While the song builds, I allow myself to breathe in anything that may be stressing me out, and then as the tempo slows, with my eyes closed, I release those anxieties.
I repeat this trick a few times, and by the end, I feel a lot more relaxed, and in a way, vulnerable. If you often struggle to fall sleep, too, I recommend you find a song that has a similarly meditative effect on you. Borrow mine, if you like!

This Beach-Bronzed Patrick Ta Glow Balm Sent Me on My First Vacation in Months
When I told my mother I was testing out a new body bronzer today, her first question was, "where are you going that you need bronzer?" Silly mom. She seems to have forgotten that the grocery store is a perfectly good setting for highlighter since, if you can't glow to Trader Joe's, where can you glow?
While I'd expect this from my non-makeup-wearing parent, I also have friends who judge my unwavering proclivity for glitter, especially in situations they don't consider shimmer-worthy. Fine, I may not be holding out hope to make it to the tropics in 2020, but this new Patrick Ta balm did actually make me feel like I was on a vacation, and reminded me that nothing (not even a surprise pandemic ... or surprise thunderstorm) can take away my sparkle.

60+ Retailers Selling (and Donating) Face Masks During the Coronavirus Pandemic
The Centers For Disease Control (CDC) has advised Americans to wear cloth face masks while out in public to help minimize the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). These precautions were put in place to prevent the spread of the virus by those who are infected with it and are asymptomatic. The CDC advised wearing a cloth face covering when you're out in public places, like grocery stores and pharmacies, where the social-distancing guidelines are harder to follow. For many before the pandemic, face masks were not a part of their at-home collection. Luckily, a selection of retailers have now made protective face coverings available for purchase. For those who do not have masks already or prefer not to make a DIY face mask, buying one is an easy alternative.
In order to properly wear a face mask, it must fit closely against the face, be secured with ties or ear loops, include more than one layer of fabric, allow for breathing, and be able to be washed without getting damaged. It's worth noting that while these cloth face coverings are not medical-grade masks like the N95 respirators and surgical masks, which are being reserved for healthcare workers, they are still useful to put on when out in public. Wearing a cloth mask will not ensure protection against ingesting droplets, but it's a precautionary safety measure worth taking.
Ahead is a curated list of face masks that are available to buy online, including companies and brands that are doing their part by donating proceeds and masks to charities and hospitals to help those working against the virus. If you don't already have a mask or need another one for yourself or a loved one, shop these picks now and help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Hilary Duff Sounds Hopeful as She Gives an Update on The Lizzie McGuire Reboot
Lizzie McGuire is the first "cool" show I remember watching as a kid. I didn't have an older sister to teach me about fashion or relationships or bras (you know exactly which episode I'm talking about). That's why Lizzie, and by extension Hilary Duff, became an icon to me and so many girls. I looked up to Lizzie as an example of what it means to be a good friend, daughter, sister, and overall person.
Fast forward nearly 20 years later, and I got the chance to chat with Duff as part of her partnership with beverage brand Creative Roots. No, I didn't tell her about my "What Dreams Are Made Of" moment at my bachelorette party or the Isabella costume I almost ordered for Halloween in college. Instead, I asked the question that's on every early '00s kid's mind right now: what's going on with the Disney+ reboot?
"I feel like it's our responsibility to honor the fanbase that grew up with her and where they are now."
Duff is more connected to Lizzie than anyone, and for that reason, she continues to fight for her character after Disney decided to halt production. "I feel like it's our responsibility to honor the fanbase that grew up with her and where they are now," she told POPSUGAR, echoing previous comments she made about giving Lizzie a storyline that's true to a 30-year-old's real life. Although she asked Disney to release the series to another network like Hulu back in February, it sounds like there might still be hope for their partnership.
"Disney has certain things that have to be met for their brand, and I totally understand that, and they totally understand my needs," she explained. "So we're in a really good place of being like, 'Hey, we pressed pause, and we're regrouping.' There's been a lot of like creative meetings, obviously virtually. I think we're on the right path, and I want it to happen more than anyone and they obviously feel the same way."
Duff said Disney is still "really excited" about the reboot and "dedicated to making it work," but everything remains on pause because of the coronavirus pandemic. For now, she's enjoying time at home with her kids - Luca, 8, and Banks, 1. They haven't really shown interest in her Disney roots since she watched The Lizzie McGuire Movie with them last year, but hey, there's always next year?
When Duff isn't chasing her kids around - or learning guitar or tie-dying - she's reconnecting with old castmates. She keeps in touch the most with Jake Thomas, who played her brother Matt, and Holly Hobble, who played her mom, but the real highlight was seeing everyone during their "really fun" Zoom table read in May.
"All of us were just giggling, couldn't stop laughing," she recalled. "And obviously there's the play of a Zoom call so we're all stepping on each other's toes."
"I think all of us feel really appreciative to be a part of something that was so impactful to others," she continued. "And there's a love there that will never go away. So hopefully, we'll get to all experience whatever that new version looks like."
