I May Destroy You Captures the Complexity of Sexual Trauma in Ways Few Shows Do
Warning: this essay contains a detailed account of sexual assault that may be triggering for those who have experienced trauma.
As a survivor of sexual violence, I'm sometimes hesitant to watch TV shows like I May Destroy You. Accurate depictions of assault can trigger painful memories of my own attack - and, conversely, I feel angry when subpar movies and shows perpetuate myths about sexual trauma and gloss over the confusing, nonlinear path that survivors navigate in the aftermath of sexual abuse. But after learning that I May Destroy You is based on the experience of Michaela Coel - who is the writer, director, producer, and star of the series - I decided to give it a try. It's not an easy show to watch, but I May Destroy You provides the most accurate, unflinching portrayal of sexual trauma that I've seen.
My own rape bears some similarities to Arabella's. I hadn't planned on going out that evening and, when I agreed to meet up with a friend, I told myself I would be home in bed by midnight. At 3 a.m. I was jolted into consciousness by a stabbing pain, tears already streaming down my face. I was in a dark bedroom that I'd never seen before, and I recognized the man who was on top of me and inside me; I'd met him earlier that evening in a packed bar where he and his roommate bought drinks for my friend and me. I tried to fight back, but it only made him angrier and more violent. Exhausted, weak, and scared, I stopped resisting.
I immediately knew I'd been raped but, like Arabella, my memories of that night came back in fragments and often at unexpected (and inconvenient) times. The flashbacks were vivid - the sudden, frightening realization that my friend was gone and I was alone with someone I'd just met and didn't trust. The nervous laughter when he moved in to kiss me, and the sense of dread when he ignored my cues that I wasn't interested. Being pushed into his bedroom, then onto his bed. Feeling my clothes torn off as I repeatedly asked, then begged, for him to stop and let me leave.
Because I was either semiconscious or unconscious for at least some portion of the night, I sometimes questioned if my memories were accurate. While Arabella researches the science of fake memories, I wondered if any of my recollections came from my nightmares rather than the attack itself. I May Destroy You adeptly shows what it's like to have a crime committed against you and then to suffer the additional indignity of not even knowing the details of the event that has profoundly impacted your life.
When Arabella speaks with police, she remains calm and somewhat emotionally detached until the very end of the interview, when she breaks down in tears. It reminded me of how I didn't feel much of anything for weeks after my rape - something that understandably confused my friends because, in general, I'm an emotional person. I met up with a good friend for lunch the next day, and she recalls asking me what I'd done the night before. "Well, it kind of sucked. I was raped," I responded in a monotone voice, as though I'd lost my phone or been inconvenienced in some harmless way. I didn't cry until I sought medical treatment at Planned Parenthood. Then I left with Plan B and a 28-day course of antiretrovirals and attempted to get back to business as usual.
Like many survivors, Arabella and I had to piece together what had happened on that awful night. But there's also the matter of sorting out what our futures will look like. While trauma often makes it difficult to function, life doesn't simply stop when you've been raped. Battling flashbacks and struggling to concentrate, Arabella still has a deadline to meet and a maxed out credit card that requires her to take on a second job. As the reality of my assault set in, I couldn't eat or sleep, and I lost my ability to focus on anything, whether it was my writing or simply watching a movie.
I felt perpetually hazy, but I didn't miss work. I increased the number of hours per week I spent volunteering for two political campaigns and spent time with friends. Continuing my career was a financial necessity, but the volunteer work and socializing was my way of avoiding being alone with my thoughts. As Arabella tells her therapist in an early session, she tries to cope by not thinking about "it" too much and not spending time alone.
The series encapsulates the experiences of many survivors, including my own, and shows that the fear and degradation experienced during an assault doesn't end when we escape from our attacker.
Eventually, of course, I had to face the reality that I had PTSD and my symptoms weren't going to just disappear, no matter how many hours I spent distracting myself from what had happened. I'm no stranger to therapy - I worked with therapists to cope with childhood trauma and was hospitalized multiple times for an eating disorder during my teens and early 20s. But this time around, I found the most solace in connecting with other survivors. I joined private support groups on social media, connected in person with survivors in my city, and eventually decided to share my story publicly with the goal of raising awareness and (hopefully) helping other survivors feel less alone. In the "Me Too" era, open conversations about sexual violence have become less taboo - something that's depicted in I May Destroy You. For example, Arabella is listening to a podcast when she realizes that Zain removing a condom during sex without her consent wasn't just wrong - under UK law, it was sexual assault. Later, she bonds with other survivors.
Although Arabella's storyline is the one that resonates most with me personally, I May Destroy You also addresses a plethora of other important issues surrounding sexual assault, consent, and how victims are treated by law enforcement. Kwame's rape and the police's callous dismissal of his trauma shows the additional stigma inflicted upon male survivors and those in the LGBTQ+ community. Then there's Terry's sexual encounter with two men who deceive and manipulate her by saying they only just met. They gain her consent through false pretenses, and the conspiratorial looks exchanged by the men are chilling and make clear that they know exactly what they're doing.
Although it has its moments of levity, I May Destroy You is often painful and uncomfortable to watch - and that's exactly why it's so realistic. The series encapsulates the experiences of many survivors, including my own and shows that the fear and degradation experienced during an assault doesn't end when we escape from our attacker. There may be profound relief and gratitude to be alive, but it's often accompanied by years of frightening flashbacks, shame, and anxiety.

All 16 Hollywood Stars Who Have an EGOT
Few clubs in Hollywood are as exclusive as that reserved for EGOT winners. The acronym refers to winning the grand slam of all four major entertainment awards in a competitive category of the Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys. That means the immensely talented individual will have displayed excellence in television, recording, film, and theater - clearly picking up an EGOT isn't an everyday occurrence.
While it took some winners their entire careers to nail all four corners of the entertainment industry, some (like musician John Legend) were able to knock out an EGOT before they turned 40. Read on to see who's earned this exclusive honor (and the first awards that got them there), then check out all the Hollywood stars who are *this close* to getting their own EGOTs.
Struggling to Create a Routine For Your New Puppy? Here's How to Do It
Creating a schedule for your puppy is vital to their development and transition to your home, but that doesn't mean it comes easy. Figuring out the right way to sit, stay, and come can be difficult for a new pup - and tough for you when there's an adorable face staring back at yours. As Maria LaCombe, dog trainer with Einstein Dog Training in Michigan, said, "Creating a schedule for your puppy helps with their mental health. Once they learn about your expectations, it relieves a lot of their stress." She went on to say that setting up a routine also sets your puppy up for success as they learn what their role is in the home and family. "And just like humans," LaCombe told POPSUGAR, "a routine helps us with our day-to-day lives and prevents bad habits from forming."
How do I set up a routine for my puppy?
Simplicity is key when setting up a schedule for your dog. "It's all about rhythm and predictability for dogs to thrive in their pack mentality," Joe Hendricks, DVM, told POPSUGAR. The schedule needs to be divided up into work time, rest time, and playtime, with the repetition of this throughout the day. This way, your puppy will not only know what to expect, but when to expect it. "That's all dog training really is," LaCombe said, "a routine."
What is work time for a puppy?
Work time is when your puppy is mentally engaged. This is where you teach your puppy to sit, stay, come, leave it, and more, and you can do this any time of day as long as it's consistent. Work time can look like several things, but it's mostly obedience training. For example, after your puppy wakes up in the morning, you take them outside to go potty, let them eat, and then can give them some work time. If you're looking to combine activities, LaCombe said that eating can be included in this work time, too. You can teach your dog to sit and leave it before eating, or even give them their food in some kind of puzzle feeder - but remember to try to be consistent; Dr. Hendricks said that it's important for dogs to know when they're going to be fed and how. After all of this work time, your puppy will likely be ready for rest time.
What is rest time for a puppy?
Giving your puppy rest time is essential to their well-being - and yours. If you never give your puppy rest time, they'll learn that they can rely on you whenever they want, meaning you'll probably be bugged for food, bathroom time, or treats when you may be busy with work, running errands, or just relaxing yourself. Rest time as part of your puppy's day teaches them independence, while also giving them actual rest (and puppies need a lot of that!). LaCombe always recommends using a crate for dogs because it provides a safe space that belongs to them. They become used to this small area, and more importantly, you can close them into the crate when necessary, so they're not running amuck in the house or having accidents all over the place. And for you, this will allow you to focus your energy on other things without your puppy demanding your constant attention. Rest time can be any length, but pay attention to your puppy's cues. Plus, after rest time, you can provide your pup with their greatest reward - playtime.
What is playtime for a puppy?
After rest time, you can take your puppy out of their crate and give them some fun playtime. Perhaps your dog loves to play tug of war, fetch, or even go for a walk. This reward will make their rest time worth it. All of this engagement will not only build their confidence, but also help them feel loved. Dr. Hendricks, who has a puppy himself, said that he gives his puppy lots of playtime after dinner outside, where she can run around chasing balls to get all of her energy out. But, he said that even through playtime, you still have a good opportunity to help mold your puppy's behavior while they're still getting used to listening to you. After all, so much of puppy training is loving on your sweet new fur baby.

A Guide to Practicing Yoga Without a Mat - And What Pose to Skip
Practicing yoga without a mat is like jumping into a pool with your clothes on - it's spontaneous, refreshing, and fun every now and then but gets uncomfortable quickly.
Sometimes it has to happen, though - and for me, that moment was in the midst of my recent move. I was stressed and stiff after a day of heavy lifting. When I couldn't locate my boxed-up mat, I resorted to a quick flow on the hardwood floor.
Instead of feeling relieved, though, I just seemed to irritate my achy joints more.
That's because I wasn't careful when pressing on joints that aren't usually weight bearing, Alice Trieu, a certified-yoga instructor affiliated with the yoga streaming platform Practyce, says - that's the most important part of practicing yoga on hard surfaces.
"Definitely, no jumping back into Plank or Chaturanga. Avoid force or impact across the top and bottom of the metatarsals of the foot by stepping back to Plank and Chaturanga - and flip the feet from Downward to Upward Facing Dog," she adds.
Since every practice, person, and environment is different, listening to your body can be the most telling guide to feeling good.
Trieu points out that a grass-based flow could feel great for some and could cause rashes for others. The beach is better for soft landings, but you run the risk of getting sand in your face (not fun!). Hardwood and other rigid surfaces, like pavement, can make lying on your stomach uncomfortable (especially for your hip bones!) and can be tough on knee joints while kneeling, too.
Clearly, though, mats aren't necessary for a successful flow - in fact, Trieu says that the instability of different surfaces can teach the body to turn on different muscles to stay balanced.
Making a mat-less flow work for you could be as simple as practicing on a towel, rug, or anything that offers some cushion and grip, Trieu says - opting for a standing sequence or chair yoga is always an option, too.
Yes, mat-less flows have some downsides - but if it means getting out of doing Chaturanga (my least favorite pose!), it may have to become a consistent part of my fitness routine.

More Proof Mental and Physical Health Are Linked: Stress Can Cause Fevers
All the more proof that your mental health directly correlates with your physical well-being: stress can, in fact, trigger a fever.
Although stress fevers are uncommon, Dr. Bindiya Gandhi, MD, a medical director and family medicine physician at Revive Atlanta MD, confirmed they can occur, especially in those who suffer from anxiety or chronic stress: "In rare instances, stress can cause a 'psychogenic' or 'neurogenic' fever, meaning without having an active acute infection from a virus or bacteria but chronic stress, instead."
According to Dr. Gandhi, stress fevers are often triggered by an event or situation (from lack of sleep to poor eating habits to traumatic incidents like car accidents and divorce) accompanying an increase in core body temperature.
Stress fevers - which range from low-grade fevers to high temperatures - have almost identical symptoms to other fever types but require very different treatments, Dr. Gandhi said. That's why understanding your stress history is important for receiving a proper diagnosis.
An antipyretic, like acetaminophen, is usually prescribed to temper an infection-related fever. But in the case of a stress fever, Dr. Gandhi noted that talk therapy or medication that treats anxiety-related disorders are most effective.
If you're concerned that stress could be the root of your fever, the first step to treatment is seeing a physician, Dr. Gandhi said, adding they should have you do cognitive-behavioral therapy or see a psychiatrist or neurologist for further evaluation.
"Ultimately, reducing your stress and how you react to the trigger is going to be the key," she said.
You heard it straight from a doctor herself: your mental health can show itself in the form of physical ailments - adding to the many reasons feeling good is linked to deep-rooted healing.

Here’s What a Muscle Knot Really Is, According to a Physical Therapist
On and off for what seems like forever, a muscle knot has tormented the same exact spot on my upper back - right above my shoulder blade, just to the left of my neck. The dull pain makes me fidgety, but also tense and rigid. I grab and pull and massage at the sensitive spot until I either feel some sort of release or forget about it altogether.
The other day, though, coincidentally while dealing with the nagging pain of a muscle knot, I realized that I didn't even know what muscle knots really were, or how they're formed. So, I tapped Curtis Wu PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, CSCS, clinical specialist in rehab at HSS Paramus, for an explanation.
"Muscle 'knots,' trigger points, and myofascial pain syndrome are terms that are used to describe the experience of sensitive spots in soft tissue that are commonly associated with injury, or in people with persistent neck/back pain," Wu says.
The Mayo Clinic also notes that repetitive motions, overuse, and poor postures can also up your risk of developing these trigger points.
They can be experienced anywhere in the body, but are most commonly noted in the upper back/neck, shoulder, low back, and around the hip. While Wu says muscle knots are associated with very real symptoms, there hasn't been a consistent explanation on how they're formed - in fact, he says there are many different theories behind the tender spots that cause such discomfort.
Some explanations, Wu explains, point to micro-spasms or cramps within the muscle that occur for a variety of reasons, like direct injury and overworking or underworking the muscle. Wu says that these "micro-cramps theoretically cause an accumulation of 'waste' products that may cause pain." However, Wu also notes that a challenge in finding the underlying cause of muscle knots is because pain is of a multifactorial nature.
"Pain can be influenced by any combination of physical, health, lifestyle, affective, cognitive, and environmental factors. As a result, it may be more important to understand trigger points as a symptom and not the cause of a person's pain experience. The need to identify some of the contributing factors to a person's pain and to address those factors is the most important for long-term benefit."
The effectiveness of muscle knot relief varies from person to person, Wu says, but there are many ways to help reduce the pain of a trigger point.
"People can get relief with massage, acupuncture, ice packs, hot packs, and physical activity/exercise," Wu says. The Mayo Clinic also notes physical therapy, stretching, and posture training as other common treatments. When my muscle knots act up, a heating pad and a gentle massage tend to lend some relief.
However, Wu says that most treatments for many only provide short-term benefits. "This further highlights the importance of identifying and addressing the factors that may be relevant to that individual's pain experience, rather than just their symptoms," Wu says.
If you're dealing with nagging trigger points, don't hesitate to speak to your doctor in order to find the best solution for your pain.

Let's Discuss How Cute Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Her Girlfriend CLAY Are, Shall We?
Maisie Richardson-Sellers plays a seemingly perfect college student named Chloe in Netflix's The Kissing Booth 2, and if you're wondering about her current relationship status, the 28-year-old actress is happily taken. Maisie has been dating LA soul singer CLAY for almost four years now after the two met at a party. "She's the best! I am honestly inspired by her every single day and feel so grateful to have her in my life," CLAY gushed to Ones to Watch back in 2019. "We met at a party that neither of us particularly wanted to be at. It's always the case, I suppose, to encounter something [or] someone amazing when you're least expecting it." Funny how that happens, huh?
Though Maisie is an actress and CLAY is a musician, the two teamed up last year for CLAY's "Project 5" video. Maisie directed and edited the visual, which spotlights the LGBTQ+ community. "We noticed that we were constantly brainstorming and bouncing ideas off of each other, and decided to explore that dynamic on a project," Maisie told Diva magazine about how the video came to be. "This one was the perfect place to start! It's been fantastic, especially because we know each other so well that there is an effortless flow and trust. We have several more collaborations in the works, so watch this space." We can't wait to see what else Maisie and CLAY have in store for us, but in the meantime, see their sweetest moments ahead.

- "I'm doing good, I'm on some new sh*t/Been saying 'yes' instead of 'no.'"
- "If you never bleed, you're never gonna grow/And it's alright now, but we were something, don't you think so?"
- "Persist and resist the temptation to ask you: if one thing had been different, would everything be different today?"
- "You drew stars around my scars, but now I'm bleedin.'"
- "In my defense, I have none, for never leaving well enough alone/But it would've been fun, if you would've been the one."
- "You were my town, now I'm in exile, seein' you out."
- "Heartbeat on the High Line, once in twenty lifetimes/And when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone's bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite."
- "Even on my worst day, did I deserve, baby, all the hell you gave me?"
- "I loved you, I swear I loved you 'til my dying day."
- "I didn't have it in myself to go with grace, and you're the hero flying around, saving face/And if I'm dead to you, why are you at the wake?"
- "August slipped away like a bottle of wine, 'cause you were never mine."
- "For me it was enough to live for the hope of it all, canceled plans just in case you'd call."
- "It's hard to be at a party when I feel like an open wound, it's hard to be anywhere these days when all I want is you."
- "You taught me a secret language I can't speak with anyone else, and you know damn well, for you, I would ruin myself."
- "So I got wasted like all my potential."
- "Time, mystical time/Cutting me open, then healing me fine."
- "Hell was the journey but it brought me heaven."
- "And isn't it just so pretty to think all along there was some invisible string tying you to me?"
- "Standing in your cardigan, kissin' in my car again/Stopped at a streetlight, you know I miss you."
- "All these people think love's for show, but I would die for you in secret."
- "Your faithless love's the only hoax I believe in/Don't want no other shade of blue but you, no other sadness in the world would do."
Try to Get Through These Photos of Taylor Zakhar Perez Without Drooling - Just Try!
There are a few things in life I think we can all agree on: the sky is blue, the Earth is round, and Taylor Zakhar Perez is so damn fine. You might have seen Taylor before in iCarly, Cruel Intentions, and Scandal, but most recently, he's starring as a new student named Marco in The Kissing Booth 2, and can I just say, "Thank you, Netflix!" Aside from the fact that he can act, there's so much more to love about Taylor, from his passion for activism to his incredibly cute dog, Jack. Oh, and not to state the obvious, but he's very easy on the eyes. Judging from his Instagram, it doesn't look like he's dating anyone at the moment, so excuse me while I shoot my shot. In the meantime, grab a cold glass of water and get ready to drool over Taylor's hottest photos ahead.

These 10 TV Shows Were Heating Up the Summer Way Back in 2000
These days, summer TV means something very different than summer TV in 2000 meant. Today, it usually signals an oncoming storm of slightly goofy reality shows, the occasional cable drama, and plenty of new streaming options. But 20 years ago, summer TV had a very different philosophy behind it. Before networks realized that summer was a perfectly good time to air original programming, the season was pretty much packed with reruns of top-rated network shows, plus a handful of low-rated replacements and some of the earliest reality programs. On the plus side, though, that year also saw the debut of some big-name shows that are, surprisingly, still summer staples today! Keep reading for a serious throwback to what everyone was watching 20 years ago.
Not to Yuck Your Yum, but The Kissing Booth's Elle and Noah Are Far From Relationship Goals
Most of the time, the point of a romantic comedy is to make you fall in love with the protagonist and their chosen partner. If you don't feel connected to their love story, how on Earth are you going to enjoy the film?! When it comes to The Kissing Booth franchise, both films manage to make me like everything but the love story between its main characters, Elle (Joey King) and Noah (Jacob Elordi). Despite the kooky kids being brought together by a classic combination of rom-com tropes, the first film's setup of Noah's character made it almost impossible for me to buy the idea of him being the right one for Elle. And the newly released Kissing Booth 2 made me realize Elle isn't right for him, either!
Before your "NoElle" senses get completely offended by the idea that these two aren't meant to be, hear me out. In the first film, no one directly accuses Noah of wrongdoing, but they all allude to his bad temper, and he's shown to resort to physical violence often enough to have a reputation. I'm sure this serves to give him an edge in the book and make him seem just the right amount of dangerous to be enticing to the pure-goodness that is Elle, but when we see it in live-action it's a lot more intimidating. It doesn't help that we continuously watch Noah lose his temper - or seem on the verge of it. Lee's (Joel Courtney) assumption that his brother has physically hurt Elle after he notices a bruise on her face is the final nail in Noah's coffin. Everyone but Elle seems to be concerned about Noah's temperament, and while it may seem romantic that she "sees another side to him," in reality that's an excuse for ignoring some big red flags. At the very least, Noah could explain that he's seeing someone for his anger issues!
Way to make your boyfriend feel like a scumbag for your insecurities, Elle!
Elle ignores all the red flags pointing toward Noah's temper, and the two are officially together by the end of the first film. In the sequel, Noah is away at Harvard and Elle decides she's going to try and be a mature girlfriend by ignoring practically all of his calls and text messages, and sporadically answering back monosyllabically. This is the first sign that Elle is terrible at this dating business; she doesn't even tell Noah that she's trying to give him space, she just stops communicating with him! She continues similarly for the rest of the film: she never truly talks to Noah about any of her feelings or worries regarding their relationship, seemingly expecting him to read her mind. And when she does confront him about her suspicions, she tells him that she began to suspect him because of his "past." Noah tells Elle that isn't fair and he's absolutely right. Elle went into their relationship accepting whatever happened in Noah's past and it's foul for her to use it as justification for her distrust. Way to make your boyfriend feel like a scumbag for your insecurities, Elle!
Elle ends up cheating on Noah with Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez) - who deserved so much better than to be caught up in their drama, sorry to this man - with a kiss on stage during their Dance Dance Revolution competition. And then, rather than acknowledging that she made a mistake and deserves his ire, Elle lashes out at Noah's obvious attempt to make her jealous by inviting his friend Chloe (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) to Thanksgiving dinner. No one is right in this situation because Noah could have used the moment to clear the air, but since Elle is the cheater here, she's even more in the wrong than everyone else.
Elle and Noah eventually make up, with her apologizing to Marco and admitting that even though she felt something between the two of them, he isn't "the one." But let's be real, that's too clean an ending for everything that went down! Throughout the film, neither Elle nor Noah felt comfortable enough to have a serious discussion with one another about their feelings or their situation; Noah couldn't talk to her about feeling out of his depth at school or why he got so close to Chloe, and Elle couldn't trust him about his fidelity. At the core of it all, Elle is quick to believe that Noah is cheating because she believes he's capable of doing that to her - which is not a stable foundation for a relationship at all.
Of course, this is a film where everyone makes terribly stupid mistakes and never talks to each other about anything because then the film would be over too quickly, but in this case, there was no need for it! Elle had enough distractions with the Lee/Rachel drama and Marco being too handsome for his own good. The fact that she thought her boyfriend was a cheater and ending up cheating on him instead is just icing on the top of the "Team Noah and Elle Just Need to Go Their Separate Ways" cake.

Plyo Training Will Have You Burning Calories Even After Your Workout Is Over
Plyo (plyometric) training - also known as jump training - could be the answer to your fitness-plateau woes.
This high-intensity workout method is all about quick, explosive movements that stretch a targeted muscle group before immediately (and quickly!) contracting that same muscle, NASM-certified personal trainer Theresa Swigert said.
The overall goal of plyo training is to exert the maximum amount of force or power in as short of an interval as possible, she added.
By incorporating this method into your fitness routine one to three times a week (since plyo is a high-intensity workout, any more could put you at risk of an overuse injury), you're opening yourself up to a diverse set of benefits.
Want to improve your speed and reaction time? Swigert said that the explosive nature of plyo training does just that.
Plus, you can increase your power output thanks to the force required to execute plyo movements. The result: eventually upgrading your weightlifting sessions with small reps of heavier loads, she noted.
Improved endurance makes the pros list, too, thanks to increased strength in the muscles and cardiovascular system.
Swigert also mentioned that your resting metabolic rate can increase, as well; even in a resting state, your body continues to burn calories after your workout is complete.
As for the cons of plyo, Swigert said that there are no real disadvantages as long as you are injury-free, limit your sessions to accommodate adequate recovery between workouts, and are proficient with standard bodyweight movements.
In fact, Swigert said that plyo workouts can be beneficial for injury prevention.
"Most injuries occur from the body experiencing an unpredictable pattern or situation. Because plyo training involves generating, accepting, and redirecting power, the body is better capable of handling unpredictable patterns," Swigert said. "Additionally, plyo is unique in that many exercises involve generating power at a muscle's weakest point. Due to this, muscles gain strength at their weakest point, which is excellent for preventing injuries."
And if the words "jump training" and "high-intensity" still have you concerned for your joint health, Swigert wants you to know that there are still benefits to modifying plyo movements by removing impact.
She used jump squats as an example: by explosively lifting from the squat position to the toes instead of jumping, you can still generate more power and elevate the heart rate more than a standard air squat.
Swigert's rule of thumb for beginners is to remove the explosive element from any plyo exercise you are going to do and check for pain - if you experience discomfort, you shouldn't continue with the high-impact modification.
For example, Swigert said, "jump lunges should only be performed when a standard reverse lunge can be executed while keeping the front foot flat to the ground, the chest lifted, and no pain in the knees."
Intrigued? Ahead, Swigert shared two exercises to exemplify how this fitness method works and possibly start you on your plyo training journey.
Standing Broad Jump
Targeting your glutes and hamstrings - which Swigert said are commonly weaker muscle groups for those who spend a lot of their day seated in a chair - is easy thanks to standing broad jumps.
- Begin with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Drive your hips back and tip your chest forward before explosively driving your hips forward and jumping as far as you can while landing softly.
Depth Jumps
According to Swigert, depth jumps are designed to increase your vertical jump height.
- Begin standing on a box.
- Drop off the box, absorb the impact briefly, and aim to jump immediately back on the box as quickly as possible.
- This move can be progressed easily by starting on a low box and increasing box height over time.
