Kim Kardashian’s Trainer Shares Her Minimalistic Approach to Home Workouts
Before reaching one million followers on Instagram and working with celebrities like Kim Kardashian West, celebrity fitness trainer Melissa Alcantara - who has partnered with Messenger on fitness accountability - began her workout journey similarly to how she maintains it now - at home.
"A lot of people don't know this, but I started my fitness journey working out from home doing Insanity by Shaun T. It was the most challenging and rewarding experience ever," she says.
"Sixty days and a ton of sweat, laughs, tears, and pounds off my body, I knew my life had changed forever."
Since returning to her home-workout roots, the CEO and bestselling author has learned that sometimes you think you need things (like fancy gym equipment!) until it's gone. It's then when you realize you never needed any of it after all.
"My home is my comfort space. I can wear what I want, say what I want, do what I want on my own schedule, and sweat as much as I want without anyone judging me," she says.
"I can still get in a fantastic workout and feel great about myself afterward without a fancy setup at home. All you need is some guidance and a plan. The rest is consistency and habit."
With that said, Alcantara hardly surprised us with her take on the most underrated home workout tools: your own body, gravity, and training bands.
We love Alcantara for serving up this no-excuses point of view. Even better, she's sharing how she gets the most out of each "tool," below - and let's just say, she does some of her best work while in her backyard, blasting '90s jams, tanning, and singing.
Your Own Body
Learning to move with purpose, engage your muscles properly, change directions, and get going takes a ton of control, power, and grace, Alcantara says.
"A squat is not just moving up and down. You need to place your feet firmly against the ground and spread your toes, rotate your knees outward to engage your adductors, tuck your booty to use your glutes and posterior chain muscles, your chest needs to be forward and shoulder blades back, your head needs to stay aligned with your spine," she explains.
"After all of this, your breath needs to move with your body. Make sure to inhale on the way down as you stretch those muscles - and exhale on the way up to engage your core."
This way, you can move well forever and make the most of your body.
Gravity
According to Alcantara, you can take any movement - like a squat - and add gravity for maximized results: "Simply attempt to lift off! So instead of a bodyweight squat, now we're doing plyometric bodyweight squats."
It takes a ton of power to jump off the ground just a few inches, she adds - that's why it's important to use your core to control the movement and land softly as you prepare to repeat.
Training Bands
"Want to get the best upper-body pump and brutal hamstring workout? Try using my training bands, and you'll be in for a treat," Alcantara says.
With training bands, Alcantara notes that you don't need super complex, heavy, and cumbersome equipment to get a great training session and results.
Combining gravity with resistance bands throughout a workout can promote a powerful, graceful, and, more importantly, healthy body, she adds.

This Guy's Hauntingly Beautiful Cover of Taylor Swift's "Exile" Has Me Listening on Repeat
When Taylor Swift's Folklore album dropped, I was just as excited to listen to the entire tracklist as I was to hear all of the inevitably amazing covers inspired by the release, and the Swiftie fandom has not disappointed. In a video shared to his band's YouTube channel, Luke Gittins from English rockband Burbank performed a hauntingly beautiful piano cover of Swift's "Exile" featuring Bon Iver. In the same vein as Swift's entire Folklore album, the magical cover evokes mental images of old home movie reels and sepia fields of flowers, setting the mood for a cozy evening curled up on the couch with a cup of piping hot tea.
If you ask me, this is the kind of cover that deserves to play over the end credits of the most heartbreaking rom-com movie (tissues required, of course). Take a listen for yourself here, and check out this mashup of Swift's "Betty" and "All Too Well" while you're at it.

PEN15's Season 2 Trailer Is Here, and - Deep Breaths - It's So Wonderfully Awkward
The trailer for PEN15's second season has everything: full-body shaves, faux-denim bikinis, that feeling that you might literally die if your best friend doesn't stop talking about your crush when he's 10 feet away. Maya Ishii-Peters (Maya Erskine) and Anna Kone (Anna Konkle) are returning to our lives on Sept. 18, and from the small selection of teaser footage, season two might be even better than season one. It doesn't give much in the way of plot (though it seems Anna's parents are definitely getting divorced), but there are plenty of painfully awkward moments and early-2000s references to love. Check out the trailer ahead, along with some very important screenshots.
You May Not Be Changing the Filter in Your Face Mask Often Enough
For a little bit of added protection against COVID-19, many people have begun adding filters to fabric face masks. In fact, many of the cloth masks available from small businesses and major retailers now include a filter pocket specifically for that purpose. While the CDC's face mask guidelines don't discuss filters at length, doctors have suggested that adding a filter to your mask can help keep you and those around you safer. We spoke with Daniel Devine, MD, a dual-board certified internist and geriatrician and co-founder of Devine Concierge Medicine, to find out more about using filters in masks, and specifically, how often you should change them.
"Masks are coming to market with interchangeable filters, and filters offer the benefit of increased rates of filtration against smaller virus particles," Dr. Devine told POPSUGAR. You can also use everyday items like coffee filters to make your own filters at home, then simply tuck them between layers of fabric. But just as it's recommended that you wash your face mask every time you wear it, you should also change the filter every day.
"If supplies are limited, it is possible to reuse filters until they become visibly soiled, moist, or have lost shape," Dr. Devine said. However, this isn't ideal as you can't be certain what kind of germs might be buried in the filter while you're wearing it. To ensure you never get caught without the necessary protection, you should always have at least one extra filter on hand at all times, as well as a spare mask. Also, Dr. Devine pointed out that if you're experiencing any trouble breathing while wearing a filtered mask, you should change the filter promptly.

I Just Dropped My Spirit Stick Over Jerry Harris and Gabrielle Union's Surprise Zoom Exchange
Gabrielle Union and Jerry Harris just blessed us with one of the best Zoom interactions of 2020 - quite possibly even better than all of those nostalgic movie cast reunions combined. After sharing a handful of sweet Twitter exchanges and mutually stanning one another earlier this year, the Bring It On actress and Cheer superstar virtually met during Variety's Power of Young Hollywood event Thursday night - much to the surprise of Jerry. The mat-talk king was in the middle of performing the Clovers' famous "Brr, It's Cold in Here" routine at home when Isis herself crashed the livestream.
"You brought it, baby!" Gabrielle exclaimed while appearing onscreen, resulting in the purest, most heartwarming reaction from Jerry. He remained in total shock as Gabrielle offered some encouraging mat talk and doled out well-deserved praise for his positive vibes. "You are the most wonderful person I've seen through my television in so long," she said. "When I started watching Cheer - because of course, I was like day one, binged the whole season - you spoke to me. Your positivity, your journey. I cried every time you appeared. I'm obsessed." Join the club, Gab!
The actress added, "We're gonna have to work together," which elicited quite the eager "Absolutely!" from Jerry, naturally. Imagine these two teaming up to recreate cheers from Bring It On - we're doing spirit fingers just thinking about it! Watch Jerry and Gabrielle's entire conversation above to hear the wise advice Gabrielle gave the Cheer icon.

How I Re-Created Studio Cycling Classes at Home Without Draining My Bank Account
For fitness enthusiasts, the "new normal" during COVID-19 means more than just working from home. It means no gym equipment. No cardio machines. And no space to sweat. Prior to the pandemic, I spent every Tuesday and Thursday taking a high-energy cycling class at my local gym. Once COVID-19 hit, I quickly realized running in the Florida heat wasn't sustainable. But with reduced hours and a limited budget, a super-expensive bike was out of the question.
After a bit of research - and some trial and error with bikes I ordered from other sites - I was able to purchase a bike, shoes, and a streaming subscription, all for hundreds less than I would have spent on some of the more exclusive options. If you're missing your favorite class - or never had a membership to begin with - here's how you can bring an affordable but studio-like cycling experience to your makeshift home gym.
Funny Dog TikToks Have Taken Over My Algorithm - Here Are Some of My Favorites
If there's two things I love in this world, it's dogs and an endless stream of funny content. Thankfully, TikTok gives me both wrapped into one! The app has all kinds of pup-friendly recordings, from training tricks to pet food recipes, but the humor videos might be my favorite. I could - OK, I do - sit for hours watching clip after clip on the social app of dogs doing the silliest things, like dancing, singing, and skateboarding. If you ever hear me laughing hysterically while I'm completely alone, you know what I'm doing.
Like most things I love in my life, once I'm hooked, I never stop talking about it. Since I've watched just about every video tagged #funnydog on TikTok, I thought it only appropriate to round up and share some of my favorites. Big and small, fluffy and short-haired, these pooches are sure to put a smile on your face.
This Ad Celebrates Black Women and Their Collective Power Ahead of the Election
Fifty-five years ago today, Black women gained the right to vote by way of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. That's 45 years after white women were guaranteed the right by the 19th Amendment, and over 100 years after all white men were extended the right the vote, demonstrating the many obstacles Black women have faced to simply have a say in their democracy. In a powerful ad in today's New York Times, Higher Heights, an organization dedicated to advancing Black women in politics, and Phenomenal, a women-powered brand that raises awareness for various causes, have teamed up for an important message. The ad both celebrates the passing of this triumphant legislation and highlights the importance of voting rights, particularly for Black women, during this critical election year.
"Black women have long been the most reliable and active participants in our democracy, yet historically they have been the last group granted the protections to participate."
The full-page ad features Winter BreeAnne, a 19-year-old teen activist, in Phenomenal's "I'm Gonna Win" T-shirt, surrounded by statements written by Cleo Wade and Stevona Elem-Rogers to uplift and empower Black women. As part of Higher Heights' #BlackWomenVote campaign, the ad showcases the collective power of Black women ahead of the upcoming election. "Black women have long been the most reliable and active participants in our democracy, yet historically they have been the last group granted the protections to participate," Phenomenal's founder and CEO Meena Harris said in a press release. "What we know for sure is that it wasn't for lack of trying and fighting. While 2020 marks 100 years of women's suffrage, it's not the centennial of suffrage for all." Get a closer look at the moving ad above.

17 Royally Sweet Photos of Queen Elizabeth II and Her "Dearly Beloved Grandson" Prince Harry
With Queen Elizabeth II's blessing, Prince Harry stepped down as a senior member of the royal family in March. In her statement, the queen made it clear that Harry, Meghan Markle, and Archie "will always be much loved members of my family."
In the past, Elizabeth has also referred to Harry as her "most dearly beloved grandson," and we can't help but reminisce about all the sweet moments they've shared together. From being front and center at the Trooping the Colour parade to sharing inside jokes at royal engagements, it's clear that Harry and his grandmother have a bond unlike any other and nothing is going to change that.
In fact, when Harry lost his mother, Princess Diana, in 1997, Elizabeth protected him and Prince William from the press by "deliberately removing the newspapers" so they "didn't know what was going on."
When Harry was asked to describe their dynamic in an interview a few years ago, he said he still views her "more as the queen" than his grandmother. "You have this huge amount of respect for your boss and I always view her as my boss, but occasionally as a grandmother." Take a look at some of their best moments together.
What to Know About Bachelorette Star Dale Moss's Day Job
We're all learning who Dale Moss is this week, thanks to the latest news out of filming for The Bachelorette. With rumors swirling that he and Bachelorette Clare Crawley already have fallen in love and left the show together, everyone is wondering who this guy is, what's his story, and what does he even do for a living? As it turns out, his job is at least one part of what makes it understandable why Clare might have fallen for him so fast.
Moss's career is pretty wide-ranging: he's dipped his toe in pro sports, modeling, and philanthropy, among other things. He's a global ambassador for the Special Olympics, and his bio on their site reveals more info about what he's done over his career. Initially, he played basketball in college, but switched over to football at South Dakota State University. Despite only playing college football for one year, he apparently made a big enough splash that he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers. He eventually played on the practice teams of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Carolina Panthers, and the Chicago Bears, but his football career never quite took off. He did, however, host a podcast from 2018 to 2019, called The Game Plan With Dale Moss, where he interviewed pro athletes about their lives and careers.
According to Moss's official website, he's now a model represented by Wilhelmina Models and has done campaigns for several brands and publications. He also apparently does a fair bit of philanthropic and advocacy work: in addition to his ambassador work with the Special Olympics, his website notes that he has also worked with the Tiger Woods Foundation, the Wounded Warriors Project, and NFL Play 60.
To make a long story short, Moss seems to have not just one job, but several. His Special Olympics bio reflects this, describing him as "an accomplished model, actor, and host, and sought after media personality" and an advocate "for youth development, inclusive initiatives and diversity to athletes." In some ways, it's continuing the grand tradition of Bachelor and Bachelorette contestants having unusual or interesting careers, and, like former castmate Matt James, is doing his best to do some good.

So . . . What Are the Chances Disney Just Releases All of Its 2020 Movies Online?
With the news that Mulan will be released exclusively on Disney+, we're wondering if Disney will release any other 2020 movies on Disney+ instead of waiting for theaters to reopen. Right now, it's all up in the air, but the success or failure of Mulan could provide a blueprint for more movies that are being held back due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Releases under the Disney umbrella for the rest of the year include The New Mutants, The King's Man, Black Widow, Soul, Free Guy, and West Side Story. It's most likely too early still to speculate about Free Guy and West Side Story, both of which are currently scheduled for December releases; West Side Story was always slated for a Winter release as a potential awards contender. While Free Guy could potentially be a good fit for Disney+ audiences, West Side Story is very much not a Disney-brand movie and might do well to wait until it can have a traditional theatrical release, especially given that the eligibility window for the Oscars has been extended.
Out of the current releases, Black Widow seems like the one Disney would most likely want to protect a theatrical release for. As a long-anticipated entry into the Marvel universe, it's had "blockbuster" written all over it since it was announced. It's the kind of movie that is "supposed" to be seen on the big screen, with huge special effects and action scenes. Since all Marvel movies are being delayed right now, the strategy might be to just keep pushing back and wait it out. After all, Black Widow doesn't take place in chronological order, but instead fits into the Marvel timeline just after Captain America: Civil War. It could easily be shifted around without disturbing continuity, even if another Marvel movie comes out before it finally does.
The most interesting case is definitely The New Mutants, an X-Men offshoot. The movie was made when 20th Century Fox was still its own studio, but in 2019, Disney bought out 21st Century Fox, including the iconic movie studio, and renamed it to the current 20th Century Studios moniker. Movies already in production or on the schedule got transferred over with the deal, which makes this complicated. According to Forbes, HBO has first streaming rights to movies made under the 20th Century Fox banner (which The New Mutants was, since it was completed before the takeover), and Disney is contractually obligated to release all remaining, completed Fox pictures in theaters. Could Disney buy its way out of this? Possibly, but we don't know yet, so right now, The New Mutants is once again in limbo. For now, it's a waiting game for everyone to see which Disney releases make their planned dates, which get pushed back, and which, if any, make the jump straight to streaming.
