Netflix's (Un)Well Raises Questions About the Safety of Essential Oils - Here's What to Know
Essential oils have become increasingly popular over the past few years as people use them to manage issues including stress, anxiety, headaches and muscle pain, and even the common cold. They're most commonly applied topically or used with a diffuser - but some have even suggested ingesting essential oils. It probably won't surprise you that experts strongly advise against taking them orally, but that doesn't mean there aren't any risks associated with topical application and diffusers. If you use essential oils or are considering giving them a try, here's what doctors want you to know about how to do so safely.
What Is the Safest Way to Use Essential Oils?
"People often equate 'natural' with 'safe,' but unfortunately, this isn't always the case. Essential oils are made of chemicals, just like everything else," Samantha Radford, PhD, an exposure scientist and owner of Evidence-Based Mommy, told POPSUGAR. She explained that essential oils are extremely potent - for example, it takes three pounds of lavender flowers to make one teaspoon of oil - and because of this, the safest way to use them is with a diffuser. Still, you should be aware of the risks associated with them. "Many oils, such as eucalyptus and rosemary, are not safe for children," Dr. Radford said. "Others aren't safe for those with heart problems."
Aromatherapy humidifiers are also generally safe when used properly. Both Dr. Radford and Tina Gupta, MD, an ACE-certified fitness nutrition specialist and owner of The Lifestyle Cure, explained you can safely use an aromatherapy humidifier for up to 30 minutes at a time, three times a day. "The reason this timeline is considered to be safe is because overuse has been associated with the development of headaches," Dr. Gupta said. "And use of aromatherapy for upwards to an hour has resulted in elevations in blood pressure and heart rate." However, these times can vary depending on the person, she added - so it's important to speak with your doctor if you have any health concerns.
Dr. Gupta told POPSUGAR that topical methods can also work well. However, there are a few important things to remember before applying essential oils to your skin. Dr. Gupta cautioned to keep them away from your eyes, ears, and mouth. "They shouldn't be applied over broken, irritated, or damaged skin," she said. Dr. Gupta also recommends doing a patch test - apply the oil to a small area of your skin and wait 24 hours to see if there's any redness or irritation. "Never use an essential oil if applying it to the skin for more than six months, especially without an antioxidant combined with it," she added, noting that this can be dangerous.
Dr. Radford noted that another danger is that many essential oils, such as cinnamon, mint, or rosemary, can leave burns if used on the skin. "If you choose to apply essential oils dermally, only use them when well-diluted with a carrier oil," she said.
Is It Ever Safe to Ingest Essential Oils?
This is the one method you definitely want to avoid. "Medical professionals rarely advise people to use this method when it comes to essential oils as there is no real research that supports this method," Dr. Gupta told POPSUGAR.
Dr. Radford cautioned that certain companies claim it's OK to ingest their oils because of their high purity - but that's not the real issue. "The warning against ingestion is not about purity," Dr. Radford explained. "The concern is that essential oils are so potent that they can cause fatigue, headaches, rashes, and even throat swelling and seizures with only a few drops when used this way."
Is There Anyone Who Should Avoid Essential Oils?
Although topical application and diffusers are generally safe when used with caution, Dr. Gupta noted that certain people should absolutely consult with their doctors before using essential oils. These include those who are pregnant or breastfeeding; children (especially if they're prepubescent); people on medications like immunomodulators or ones that cause photosensitivity; and anyone with a history of being immunocompromised, high blood pressure, arrhythmias, migraines, and seizures.
And if you have pets, Dr. Gupta said it's important to consult with a veterinarian because some essential oils can be deadly to animals.
Meghan Markle on America's Fight For Racial Justice: "I Can See That the Tide Is Turning"
In a virtual interview on Aug. 14, Meghan Markle sat down with Emily Ramshaw, the co-founder and CEO of the 19th Represents - a summit founded to empower women and shine a light "on the unfinished business of the 19th Amendment" - to discuss the ongoing impact of the sufragette movement, specifically as it pertains to underrepresented groups like the Black community. The interview comes just a handful of months after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the decision to split their time between the UK and North America back in January. As part of the discussion, Meghan opened up about the devastating and empowering effects returning home during a turbulent time of social and political reckoning has had on her.
"It shifted from sadness to a feeling of absolute inspiration, because I can see that the tide is turning."
"To come back and to just see this state of affairs . . . it was just devastating," Meghan told Emily of her initial return. "It was so sad to see where our country was in that moment. If there's any silver lining in that, I would say that in the weeks after the murder of George Floyd, in the peaceful protests that you were seeing, in the voices that were coming out, in the way that people were actually owning their role . . . it shifted from sadness to a feeling of absolute inspiration, because I can see that the tide is turning."
Meghan will make history in 2020 as the first royal family member to exercise their right to vote in a US presidential election, which is why she's using her voice to speak up for underrepresented communities and encouraging everyone to vote. "From my standpoint, it's not new to see this undercurrent of racism and certainly unconscious bias, but I think to see the changes that are being made right now is really - it's something I look forward to being a part of," she said. "And being part of using my voice in a way that I haven't been able to of late. So, yeah, it's good to be home."

Today's forecast might call for 99-degrees and humidity (yes, someone please throw ice on me), but that's a meaningless datapoint. You see, I called my mom twice this week to talk about new Halloween decorations we have our eyes on. (You can never have enough inflatable Halloween lawn decor.)
So you can imagine my enthusiasm when I was going through Old Navy's new arrivals section and saw that Halloween shirts were already tricking in. Old Navy is on the same page as me! From mummy-inspired Minnie Mouse tees that I'm definitely buying to shirts with awesome puns, here are my favorite spooky picks at Old Navy right now. Get ready to adjust your mood to fall now.

Miley Cyrus Reminds Us She Doesn't Belong to Anyone in Disco-Tastic "Midnight Sky" Video
Miley Cyrus is back with new music! After giving fans a bunch of teasers about her newest single, the singer finally dropped "Midnight Sky" at midnight on Aug. 13 and it was well worth the wait! Cyrus exudes boss b*tch attitude in every scene of the video, wearing head-to-toe designer labels in rockstar looks or lounging in a candy-filled room in her birthday suit. The song is a powerful anthem of independence as Cyrus sings, "I was born to run / I don't belong to anyone / don't need to be loved by you." Sounds like a pretty timely reminder, doesn't it?
On Aug. 10, the singer dropped the most recent of many teasers for the single, including a Rocky Horror-esque video of her lips and a clip from her "Start All Over" video, which she simply captioned "Meet Miley Cyrus. . . again." It seems like "Midnight Sky" could be hinting at a new era of music for the singer following her 2019 She Is Coming EP since the song is more of an electro-pop vibe complete with a light helping of synth. Cyrus also teased that Dua Lipa had heard what the fans hadn't. Does this mean that there's a collaboration in the works? Could Dua Lipa actually be on the song? We'll have to wait to see, but in the meantime, we can watch this new music video and dance the night away!

Should You Wear Glasses or Goggles to Protect Against COVID-19? Experts Weigh In
While we've been warned for months not to touch our faces during the COVID-19 pandemic, the risk of contracting the virus through the eyes, specifically, was suddenly thrust into the public consciousness in late July, when Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told ABC News that goggles or a face shield could be helpful in reducing the spread. "Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces. So if you have goggles or an eye shield you should use it," Dr. Fauci said. He added that a shield or goggles are not universally recommended at this time - but if you want to wear them for more complete protection, you can.
Just how much risk is there of contracting COVID-19 through your eyes? "Essentially, the chance of ophthalmological transmission is slim but possible," Arthur Astorino, MD, a board-certified ophthalmologist at Astorino and Associates Eye Center in Newport Beach, CA, told POPSUGAR. Here's what you need to know.

How Could COVID-19 Get Into Your Eyes?
"When addressing the concern of, 'Can I catch COVID-19 from someone else by getting something in my eye?' we have to consider the way the virus can enter the body," Dr. Astorino said. "A recent study has shown that we have ACE2 receptors [which can receive the SARS-CoV-2 virus] on the tissue of the eye; so in theory, if someone coughs or sneezes or gets air particles into your eye, it's possible to transmit COVID-19 that way." However, he added that he doesn't know of any documented transmissions via the eye.
"Ocular transmission is possible, but nobody knows to what extent the eye is a conduit, and the jury is out on how common it is," explained Sandra Kesh, MD, deputy medical director and infectious disease specialist at Westmed Medical Group in Westchester, NY. "It's likely not a major route of infection." Dr. Kesh added that she believes "you would have to have close contact with someone sneezing, coughing, or spitting when they talk to contract the virus through your eye."

Should You Wear Eye Protection to Help Prevent COVID-19?
Because Dr. Fauci suggested eye protection, we conferred with our experts to get their takes, too. "If you want to be cautious, you can. If it makes you feel better to wear a face shield, go for it. But if you're just going to a grocery store, you're not really going to need eye protection," Dr. Astorino said. "If you're an eye doctor, inches from a patient's face, or dealing with COVID-positive patients, that's when you'll want a shield."
Dr. Kesh agreed. "This is an area where personal choice and relative risk matter," she told POPSUGAR. "With a virus like this, it's next to impossible to fully protect yourself at all times, so we start to think about relative risk more carefully. The relative risk of getting exposed through your nose and mouth is far greater than through the eyes, based on what we've seen so far."
That doesn't mean your eyes carry no risk, "but the probability of you inhaling a droplet is far greater," she continued. "Masks are a tried and true way to prevent infection. Adding eye protection is another layer, but I think far less important than regularly wearing a facial covering of high-quality material. With that and social distancing, we've seen that we can stop spread."
That said, you might consider wearing glasses instead of contact lenses, if for no other reason than to keep your fingers out of your eyes. "Your fingers are in your eyes more when you wear contact lenses," Dr. Astorino said. He suggests maybe laying off the contacts if you're out and about, and being super diligent about hand washing - but don't worry about it too much.
Sunglasses are also "a good idea no matter what," Dr. Astorino said, because they protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, among other things. So, don't forget your shades while you're enjoying some socially-distanced sunshine this year. That said, "sunglasses won't be the most important thing to reduce transmission of the virus," Dr. Kesh said. "I would invest more in masks, social distancing, and vigilant hand hygiene."

Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me" Music Video Is the Quirky Indie Rom-Com We Deserve
In 2008, back when YouTube videos only had 480-pixel resolution, Taylor Swift released her iconic "You Belong With Me" music video, and a cinematic masterpiece was born. Well, the video never actually hit the silver screen, but the in-depth storyline and classic rom-com elements make this video worthy of an Oscar, in my book. The video stars Swift as both the quirky protagonist, aka the Girl Next Door (TM), and the villainous cheerleader, and they are caught in a love triangle with Lucas Till, aka the Boy Next Door (TM).
As Swift's character copes with her feelings for Till's character - who is also the captain of the football team, by the way - she struggles with her identity, feeling torn between trying to fit in and being who she really is. On the road to finding herself, Swift treats us to a silly dance montage and lots of moody pining moments in her incredibly 2000s-esque bedroom. The boy next door is clearly in love with her, but they both have to find the courage to admit their feelings to one another. If that isn't the premise for every early 2000s movie worth seeing with your BFF during a sleepover, then I don't know what is.
The nail-biting conclusion? It all ends in a big romantic spectacle at the school dance where they confess their feelings for one another and share a sweet kiss on the dance floor. The overall message about staying true to yourself despite being pressured to fit in is definitely right up there with the likes of She's the Man and Enchanted. Yep, this whole movie video is basically the definition of magical, but you don't have to take my word for it. Relive the full "You Belong With Me" music video, scene by scene, for yourself ahead.

Whether you're already planning on heading to the polls and voting in person or casting an absentee ballot from the comfort of your own home, it's more important than ever to spread the message to vote - and it doesn't hurt to look cute while doing it. Joining a slew of other fashion brands inspiring people to vote, Brother Vellies has teamed up with Keds to design a pair of chic white canvas sneakers, and 100 percent of its proceeds will be donated to When We All Vote.
While the all-white kicks are classic Keds at its foundation, they come with When We all Vote laces, a Brother Vellies charm, and a message handwritten by Brother Vellies's creative director and founder, Aurora James. The brand is also selling striped crew socks to pair with the sneakers, donating $5 to When We All Vote for every pair sold. Launched in 2018 by Michelle Obama, Tom Hanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Janelle Monae, Chris Paul, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, When We All Vote is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to increasing voter participation and closing the race and age voting gap.
The canvas sneakers are currently sold exclusively on the Brother Vellies website for $95 a pair, while the socks retail for $35. Take a closer look at the details below and get inspired to get out the vote.
26 Million Women Have Uterine Fibroids, and Kamala Harris' New Bill Aims to Change That
A week before Joe Biden announced Kamala Harris as his running mate, Harris introduced the Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act, a bill that will help push research and education surrounding uterine fibroids to the forefront, helping women get the critical information and care they need.
"Millions of women across the country are affected by uterine fibroids, which can present serious health complications," Harris said in a press release. "Complications from uterine fibroids can lead to maternal mortality and morbidity, an ongoing crisis especially for Black women," she continued. The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, who stated: "This bill is an important first step towards making women's healthcare a priority."
Uterine fibroids are one of the most common gynecological conditions, yet there is a lack of awareness, education, and prioritization about uterine fibroids, which the introduction of the legistlation will hopefully change. In the US, it's estimated that 26 million women between the ages of 15 and 50 have uterine fibroids, and more than 15 million of them will experience associated symptoms or health concerns, according to a 2017 evidence summary. For more information on what the legislation entails, continue reading.
A Closer Look at the Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act
- Provide $30 million anually for FY21-FY25 (fiscal year 2021 to fiscal year 2025) to the National Institutes of Health to expand research on uterine fibroids.
- Direct the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to expand the Chronic Conditions Warehouse research database to include data on the services provided to women who experience symptoms of uterine fibroids.
- Create a uterine fibroids public education program through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to disseminate information on the incidence and prevalence of uterine fibroids among women, including the elevated risks for women of color, and the available treatment options.
- Direct the Health Resources and Service Administration, in consultation with medical societies, to develop and disseminate information regarding uterine fibroids to health care providers, including the elevated risk for women of color to develop uterine fibroids and the available treatment options.
These Celebrities Confirmed Pink Is the Post Stay-at-Home Orders Hair Color Trend to Try
Let's be real: we all tried a few beauty experiments over the last few months simply because we could in the comfort and no-judgment-zone that is our own home. Without access to a hair salon for quite some time, the most common beauty task that people took into their own hands was dyeing their hair, and even celebrities got in on the action. We expected to see celebrities perform DIY root touch-ups during shelter-in-place (like that time Lucy Hale pulled a Bob Ross), but what we got was never-before-seen hair colors, like pink.
Julianne Hough, Dua Lipa, Maddie Ziegler, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Faith Hill all all colored their hair bubblegum pink at some point in the last few months. While a few of them went for the bright color early on in the pandemic, others opted to go pink post stay-at-home orders and are still rocking the shade now.
The millennial pink hair color isn't anything new, but these celebrities gave the trend a major revival. Now, even with hair salons reopening across the country, we won't be surprised if more people decide to go pink with the help of a professional stylist.
See all the celebrities that jumped on board the pink hair trend, ahead.

Show Your Houseplants How Much You Care With These 31 Punny Plant Names
If you've collected your fair share of plants over the years (or past few months), it's safe to say you've committed to being a plant parent - congratulations! Being a green mom or dad is awesome, and it comes with all sorts of quirks, like talking to your plants, playing music for them, and naming them, among other things. Of course, you don't have to do all three, but identifying your leafy greens by name definitely has its benefits.
Not only will humanizing your plants help you speak out loud to them more often (which is good!), but it'll remind you of your plant's weird necessities . . . like how Christofern likes indirect sunlight and how Teeny Weeny only needs to be watered a few times a week. It takes some getting used to, but once you've established your green kids' names, your care for them will only get better. If you're interested, have a look at a few that we've come up with, ahead.

Experts Explain What's at Stake in the 2020 Election When It Comes to Women's Health
With the 2020 election less than three months away, all eyes are on the showdown between the incumbent Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. The former has repeatedly waged attacks on women's rights, particularly when it comes to healthcare issues including (but not limited to) Title X funding, access to contraception, and a longheld mission to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Of course, President Trump is hardly the only politician who poses a threat to women's health. It's equally important to educate ourselves about the healthcare policies and voting records of Congressional, state, and even local candidates. Most campaigns have websites that include comprehensive information about a candidate's policies, so you can become well-versed on where they stand on the issues that are most important to you. If a candidate's stance on a particular issue isn't available to the public, contact them and request a clear answer on the actions they plan to take if elected. To get you started, we've rounded up six of the most pressing issues on the ballot in November, according to doctors and policy experts.
