Everything You Need to Know About How to Vote Early

With COVID-19 still a very real problem in the US, the upcoming election will most certainly be affected. Not only is there a shortage of poll workers, which can lead to longer wait times, but voting by mail is also unclear to many. It's important to exercise your right to vote, so once you've registered, find out not just where to vote, but how to vote by mail or vote early if you choose. Ahead, we have tips from Debra Cleaver, founder of Vote America, on the advantages of voting early as well as what you need to know about the whole process.

Why Should I Vote Early?

There are a few advantages to voting early. One of the big advantages is that you get your vote in and out of the way. This year, especially, there's a lot up in the air with mail-in ballots and polls being understaffed due to COVID-19, and voting early helps to spread out the votes coming in. Cleaver added, "Election administrators are likely to get overwhelmed, and that can cause issues and mistakes. To avoid that, we need to flatten the curve of applications they'll receive - which means you need to request your voter registration applications now, and request your absentee ballot or sign up to vote by mail now."

And because of COVID-19, voting early, especially by mail, will bring down the number of people going to the polls on Election Day - thus lessening the chances of exposure for both those working and those voting. Cleaver also noted that most likely the lines will be long at polling places in November, largely because of a shortage of people working. "There will be very long lines at the polls in most counties. Skip all of that. Vote early, vote by mail."

How Do I Know When to Vote?

You have to be sure to know your area's guidelines, and in many cases, mail-in ballots need to be mailed well before the election. Vote America is a great resource for registering to vote and finding out all the important dates. Once you have the date nailed down, make sure you stick to it. It's important to make a note of when mail-in ballots are due and when exactly you can vote early. It can vary by state, and COVID-19 has also affected some states as well.

How Do I Sign Up to Vote Early?

Check the government website for voting to find out when you need to register by and when your ballots have to be in or when you need to vote. Pay close attention to the deadlines and make sure you meet them so your vote is counted!

You Can Stay Overnight at One of the US's Most Notorious Murder Houses, and the Photos Will Give You Chills

If you're a fan of true crime and don't get spooked easily, you probably already know all about the Villisca Ax Murder House in Iowa. Now a historical site, the house has a bone-chilling history that's made it one of the most notorious murder houses in our country's history - and you can visit it! But before you purchase your tickets (more on the later), you'll want to read up on the horrifying true story of what happened to the Moore and Stillinger families inside the house. The events left two adults and six children dead, and if the hair on the back of your neck isn't already standing up, it will be.

The Villisca Ax Murder House Story

In the rural small town of Villisca, IA, in 1912, the Moore family lived in this small white frame house. Mr. and Mrs. Moore had four children: Herman, 11, Katherine, 9, Boyd, 7, and Paul, 5. One Sunday evening after church, sisters Lena and Ina Stillinger (ages 12 and 8) were invited back to the Moore household for supper and an overnight with the children, which they gladly accepted. When a neighbor didn't see any activity on the Moore property the following morning, she became worried and rang for the brother of Mr. Moore. After multiple attempts of calling into the house for someone to open or unlock the front door, he entered using a personal house key. What he saw next kick-started one of the world's most scandalous unsolved murder cases.

Inside, the bodies of the Stillinger sisters were found dead in a downstairs bedroom and the bodies of the Moore family were found dead in the bedrooms upstairs. All houseguests were bludgeoned to death on the night of June 10, 1912. What has scholars, historians, and investigators stumped is how the murder scene was left.

Lamps were found off at the end of each bed that contained a dead body; the victims' faces were covered with clothes after they were murdered; a bloody axe (presumably the murder weapon) was located in the room where the Stillinger girls were sleeping, and all rooms had gauge blood marks that mimicked the swing of an axe; there was a pan of bloody water in the kitchen along with a plate of uneaten food (Ummm, WTF?!); and all doors were locked. Oh, and did we mention that the axe belonged to Mr. Moore, which leads people to believe that the murderer arrived at the house unarmed?

Although there were a plethora of suspects, to this day, now 108 years later, there still isn't a convicted murderer and the case remains unsolved. Shortly after the murders, rumors began to spin out of control in the small town and newspapers picked up any and every name that was mentioned but that didn't produce a verified killer.

How You Can Tour the House

If you're just as curious and spooked about this unsolved murder mystery house as we are, you can visit the Villisca Ax Murder House and see it for yourself. Day tours are available Tuesday to Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., and tickets are $10 per person and $5 for seniors (you just have to be 12 years or older to enter). Reservations aren't necessary, but masks or face coverings are mandatory right now, and groups are limited to six with a 15-minute time limit inside the house.

And for the most spine-tingling type of visit, you and a group of up to six guests can book an overnight tour for $428. After a tour of the house and grounds, keys are turned over to the guests and you have the house to yourself from 4 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. the next morning. Those staying overnight are advised to bring coats, sleeping bags, and pillows. Photographs, videos, and audio recording are highly encouraged!

You can book an overnight tour by visiting the Villisca Ax Murder House website, where you will also find more information regarding COVID-19 limitations and safety precautions. In the meantime, sneak a peek at some of the rooms inside the Villisca Ax Murder House ahead.

Lovecraft Country's Aunjanue Ellis Has a 20+ Year Career Full of Amazing Movies and TV Shows

Anyone tuning into HBO's Lovecraft Country will undoubtedly recognize Aunjanue Ellis, who plays the series's Hippolyta Freeman, a family-oriented businesswoman with a penchant for watching the stars and a hunger for adventure. On a show full of monsters, both mythical and human, Hippolyta serves as the very human constant; that is until she gets involved in the messiness as well. But Hippolyta is just as bold and strong-willed as a lot of the characters Ellis has played in the past, and there have been a lot. The 51-year-old actress made her professional acting debut on the stage in 1995 and she hasn't stopped dazzling us ever since!

Her credits are a collection of well-loved characters on both the big and small screen, such as her role as the sharp, but fair Miranda Shaw on ABC's thriller series Quantico, her performance on The Book of Negroes, based on the bestselling novel by Lawrence Hill, and her iconic portrayal of Sistah Girl alongside Eddie Griffin in the action comedy film Undercover Brother. Most recently, Ellis garnered critical acclaim, universal admiration, and an Emmy Award for outstanding lead actress in a limited series for her performance on Ava DuVernay's Netflix miniseries When They See Us. Amy Schumer Is Holding Off on More Kids: "I Can't Be Pregnant Ever Again"

Amy Schumer didn't have an easy journey to motherhood with son Gene, who is now 15 months old, so it's understandable that - despite resuming in vitro fertilization treatments earlier this year - she's having second thoughts about future pregnancies.

The comedian completed an egg-retrieval process back in January and the next month revealed that she and husband Chris Fischer had secured at least one embryo, but in a preview for an episode of Sunday Today With Willie Geist, she said she is reconsidering her plans.

"We did IVF, and IVF was really tough on me," she said. "I don't think I could ever do IVF again."

Between that and her nine-month struggle with hyperemesis gravidarum, a pregnancy complication that comes with severe nausea and vomiting, she seems ready to accept that she won't conceive or carry any potential future children.

"I decided that I can't be pregnant ever again," she said. "We thought about a surrogate, but I think we're going to hold off for right now."

Of course, whether they grow their family or not, she and Chris feel complete with Gene right now. "Life is so much more beautiful," she said. "He's the best thing in my life."

Here's When We Think We'll Meet Chrissy Teigen's Third Baby

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend subtly announced a third pregnancy at the end of John's music video for his new song, "Wild," on Aug. 13, and we can't wait for them to welcome a new baby sibling for Miles and Luna! But when can we expect to meet their third kiddo (who we'd safely bet might be another John look-alike)?

Based on the nature of Chrissy's announcement, we can't be positive how far along she is - how long does it even take to produce a socially distant music video?! However, as most parents-to-be tend to wait until around the three-month mark to share pregnancy news publicly - and based on her reaction to her already there baby bump - we'd guess Chrissy is due sometime in early 2021.

It's possible the mom of two will share specifics in the future, but for now, that's the best guess we've got. Congrats to this beautiful growing family!

Ciara Shares the Sweet Backstory Behind Her Baby Son's Name: "I Give Credit to Dad"

Ciara and Russell Wilson's baby boy is finally here, and his name is a win! Actually, his name is actually Win. The newborn, who is the second child the couple share and Ciara's third, was born on July 23. Both Ciara and Russell shared the birth of their little one on Instagram, Ciara writing in the caption of her video announcement: "Happy Birthday WIN!!! Mommy & Daddy Love You! Win Harrison Wilson 7.23.2020 8lbs 1 oz." Russell shared the same caption on his own account alongside a photo of the proud parents and baby Win.

The name Win is certainly a unique one - so much so that it doesn't appear in the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 popular names at any point since 1900. However, his middle name, Harrison - which is of English origin and means "son of Harry" - was the 115th most popular boys' name in 2018.

Ciara shared in an interview with ET that the idea for their son's name came from Russell. "That is Daddy. I give credit to Dad. Oh my gosh, I'm gonna get emotional," she said, adding that her husband would act out scenes using the name, as it was always on his baby name list. Win shares his middle name with his late grandfather, Russell's dad, Harrison Wilson, III. "There was a lot of love and thought put into it," Ciara said.

We can't wait to see more of baby Win soon, especially with his older siblings Future and Sienna. Congrats to the new family of five!

Short Bursts of Exercise Aren’t Bad For Joint Issues - If They’re Done the Right Way

When I'm dealing with joint pain, the 45-minute HIIT classes on my workout apps are fully ignored, and I stand by that decision - nearly an hour of jump squats doesn't seem like a good idea for my aching knees.

But my workout apps also offer a large selection of 10-15 minute HIIT classes, as well as segments simply dedicated to shorter bursts of exercise - and it made me wonder if these were a safe option for someone like me, who regularly deals with joint issues and pain.

"If you have joint issues or pain, you can still do short bursts of exercise so long as they are low-impact and don't cause your pain to flare up," Leada Malek, PT, DPT, CSCS, SCS, explains. "In regard to HIIT training with joint pain, you should still include a short burst of exercise - so long as the exercise is appropriate for you. This will improve your ability to do the workout, reduce the chance of flares, and likely be encouraging for future workouts."

So, as long as you have your doctor's approval, you can tackle those 10-minute HIIT classes, as long as the exercise in that "short burst" interval is safe and won't cause further injury or discomfort.

For example, if you have knee pain with high-impact moves, like high jumping or single-leg hopping, Malek says you can try jumping jacks, small double-leg hops, or mountain climbers within those short bursts.

"You could also do something like a plank with alternating shoulder taps. Another option would be burpees without the hop back or jump up, and instead stepping back. You could even do something as simple as holding a wall sit while doing bicep curls. All these are minimal-to-low-impact exercises, but still ways to take your effort to the next level for a short bust," Malek explains.

NASM-certified personal trainer Sarah Pelc Graca believes that you can tackle the concept of high-intensity bursts in HIIT training with any exercise modality. So, for example, if you're on an elliptical or a spin bike, you can kick up the speed for 15-20 seconds.

"I want to stress that if you do have joint pain, be sure to talk to your doctor about the root cause of that joint pain," Graca says. "But if you do have joint pain, then choosing a low impact modality for your HIIT exercise can help - indoor cycling, swimming, even treading water or jogging in place while in the water. Play with intervals of 20 seconds full-on/maximum effort, and 20 seconds rest. These short bursts are not going to hurt you if you pick a low-impact exercise."

My Firstborn Son Is a Leo Like Me, and It’s Exhausting, Honestly

My firstborn son, Logan, was born in August, making him a Leo like me. It's great when it comes to his infectious laughter and heartwarming hugs, but tough when he throws epic tantrums, tries to control every situation, and is so. darn. stubborn. We have a battle of wills daily.

If nobody told you, allow me to fill you in: having a Leo baby is honestly exhausting. Anyone born between July 23 and August 22 is a Leo, named after the lion in the zodiac. This gives us many admirable traits, like being outgoing, creative, and fearless. But if your strong-minded Leo is only 3 years old, it can be particularly challenging.

For example, Leos love being the center of attention. This means my son will choose throwing a huge tantrum in public if it gets empathy from complete strangers. He can also be super dramatic - great for his future career as a movie star, not so great for my self-esteem. When I say dramatic, I don't just mean crying when I gave him the purple spoon with the yellow bowl. I mean, throwing himself to the floor and claiming his little brother pushed him (I doubt it), or crying actual, real tears in the grocery store and telling me that "You make me very sad, Mommy" when I won't let him buy a new toy. See? Exhausting.

His leadership qualities can also try my patience. Yes, I'm sure he will be a CEO of a Fortune 500 company one day, but today, he simply tries to manage every part of his life. He has to pick out exactly the right shirt, exactly the right snack, exactly the right movie, exactly the right number of toys to put in his backpack to bring in the car. He also gets frustrated when his little brother doesn't listen to every order he gives ("Liam, you can't sit in my seat. It's dangerous.")

Also, just like a lion, my son is extremely brave. He's almost entirely fearless - which is super scary for me. He's not afraid to try new things, like eating a tube of prescription antibiotic ointment or making art with poopy diapers. Sliding the biggest slides? No problem for this adventurer. Climbing up on couches, tables, fireplaces, ladders in the garage, bookshelves? Just another Tuesday for him.

But just as his Leo traits can make Logan hard to parent (also, being a parent is always kind of hard anyway), those same qualities also bring so much joy in my life as well. His love of attention makes him so entertaining to be around. We've had countless conversations about superheroes, how mommy is his best friend, how much he loves donuts, why he loves Halloween, and more. He's also had me clutching my side in laughter at the most random moments. It's like having my own mini comedian in the house!

Being a natural-born leader also has its benefits. He teaches his little brother how to do things, like safely scoot down the stairs, wash his hands, and eat yogurt with a spoon. He also nailed potty training at 2 years old, happily plays independently, and has a blast reminding me of what to do in our bedtime routine - it's brush teeth, then jammies, then read two books, then sing a song, for the record.

Finally, my favorite thing about his Leo personality is how fiercely he loves. Logan is compassionate with other people's feelings, always comforting if he sees someone sad, and making sure we are happy throughout the day. He is protective of his little brother ("He didn't mean to bite you, Daddy!"), and he loves making new friends. He waves to the Starbucks barista, random neighbors, stray bunnies in our neighborhood, and kids at the playground. Also, he is incredibly sweet to me, showering me with kisses and strong hugs whenever I need it most.

Although I wouldn't have purposely chosen to have a Leo baby, at the end of the day, I feel incredibly lucky that I got one. He was an attention-seeking baby and a commanding toddler, but he is also so sweet and funny and smart. And, yeah, he can be a little stubborn, but who am I to blame him? I was a Leo toddler once too.

Thank Your Calves For All They Do With This Bodyweight Leg Workout

If you aren't showing your calves some love come leg day, you may want to think twice - these muscles bring more to the table than you probably realize.

"The calf works seamlessly in conjunction with the entire body to walk, run, and jump," Michelle Pualani Houston, a NASM-certified personal trainer, says - and that includes the ankle joints that mobilize the foot and toes and the knee to flex or bend.

Did you know that the calves are actually made of two muscles: the gastrocnemius and the soleus? Houston explains that each muscle functions differently while working cohesively, which is why stretching and strengthening are equally important during a workout.

"To prevent calf injuries, it's best to take a multidimensional approach to your training or exercise protocol," Houston says.

"Incorporate varied types of movement in different environments to avoid overtraining and to prepare the body for more dynamic ranges of movement that sometimes catch you off guard."

Another important takeaway from Houston is that calves are only as effective and strong as their supporting muscle groups. That's why her calf workout incorporates the quads, hamstrings, and glutes to boost stability, strength, and mobility.

Houston suggests resting for 10-15 seconds between sets, but feel free to take more breaks when needed.

Zac Efron to Star in Three Men and a Baby Reboot - Here's Who Should Play the Other 2

Zac Efron is getting his head back in the Disney game! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Efron will be starring in a remake of Three Men and a Baby for Disney+ - a big reunion for both the film company and the High School Musical star. No other details have been revealed, but the 1987 comedy originally starred Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson as New York bachelors Peter, Michael, and Jack, respectively. However, the real question is: who will join Efron in the reboot? We have a few ideas.

Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller

Efron already has experience palling around with Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller from their 2014 rom-com That Awkward Moment - this would be easy work for these guys. Plus, I could totally see Teller growing out a strong Sellack-style 'stache.

Corbin Bleu and Lucas Grabeel

OK, hear me out. We haven't seen Efron, Bleu, and Grabeel reunite onscreen since their High School Musical days, but what better way for them to reunite than on another Disney project? All in favor, "wave your hands up in the air!"

Henry Golding and John Boyega

Alright, I just feel deep in my bones that this trio would work. We haven't seen John Boyega do a ton of comedic acting, but let's be real, he carried most of the funny Star Wars moments (from the last few years) on his back. My one demand is that both Henry Golding and Boyega keep their accents for filming.

Zac Efron, Zac Efron, and Zac Efron

Let's just give this whole movie the Parent Trap treatment and have Efron play all three parts. Which man is he? Who cares! He's all of them. Hell, make him the baby, too.

Just Two Other Men Who Know How to Take Care of a Baby

You know what the only real requirement for this movie should be? That all three characters don't act like it's totally weird for men to take care of a baby. Maybe they're not naturals from the get-go (Although, why not? Changing diapers is an equal opportunity job!), but the fumbling around and the acting terrified of caretaking tasks is tired. Sign my petition to make childcare responsibilities normal! Just kidding . . . but really.

20 Things You Should Pack to Help Ensure You Stay Safe and Healthy on Campus

Packing for college can be an overwhelming process, and although you can purchase a majority of your dorm essentials during that first week, there are some items - yes, including medicines and first-aid supplies - that should be picked up and stowed away prior to drop-off day.

If your parent or guardian is anything like mine, they probably have several college packing lists going already. For me, first-aid supplies were never much of a priority. I was more concerned about my bedding and hanging twinkling lights than stocking up on Band-Aids or checking to see if the bottle of hydrogen peroxide had expired. But the first time I woke up with a hangover, I was grateful that my mom had made sure I packed ibuprofen. Likewise with the allergy pills she snuck into my first-aid kit, because she knew my sinuses would go crazy when the seasons changed. She may have been thousands of miles away, but she knew exactly what I needed.

Even though I definitely didn't need the five bags of cotton balls that were stashed in my luggage, I was prepared for any sickness or minor injury that came my way. Yes, picking out your dorm decor is fun and exciting, but preparing a first-aid kit is a crucial task you should check off your list before stepping on campus. Kick Off Your Ruby Slippers - This Wizard of Oz Hotel Room Has a Glittery Emerald Bedspread

Someone had better get Miss Dorothy Gale on the phone because a Wizard of Oz-inspired motel room exists, and we might be dreaming. Inspired by the classic 1939 movie, the emerald-embellished motel room is one of many themed bedrooms at The Roxbury Motel in Roxbury, New York. From floor to ceiling, the space is decorated in glittering accents of green and gold, and it even comes complete with a hand-painted mural depicting the sparkling lights of the Emerald City.

"The Wizard of Emeralds," or Room 21, even features an actual yellow brick road that divides the room and runs up the length of the mural. The room also includes a ruby slipper wine bottle holder, a two-person soaking tub with dual showerheads, dual vanities, and a bathroom painted with massive poppies. Is anyone else suddenly feeling . . . very sleepy?

If you are looking to catch some z's, the king-sized bed comes with a sparkling emerald bedspread and a pillow that looks eerily like the Wicked Witch of the East's legs before they curled up under that house. For anyone thinking about reserving a night in the mesmerizing room, the motel is taking increased safety precautions for the health and safety of guests and staff amidst the COVID-19 outbreak. Price ranges from $182 to $275 per night and the room is already booked through to late September, so if you're looking to take a walk down the yellow brick road before the end of the year, book your stay soon. In the meantime, take a sneak peek at the magical motel room for yourself ahead.

65 Pieces You Had in Your Closet If You Were a Teen in the Early 2000s

Oh, the early 2000s. A time when tiny dogs, Juicy Couture tracksuits, and flip phones were all the rage. Torsos were emphasized by low-rise jeans and UGG boots were fashionable all year long (don't act like you didn't pair them with jean shorts, too). Popcorn tops were itchy, but that didn't stop us from sporting them every chance we got. Bermuda shorts sure didn't do us any favors, but wearing them with a Hollister T-shirt guaranteed you a spot at the cool kid's table. Our early 2000s fashion sense might have been trash, but that doesn't mean it wasn't absolutely iconic.

From Paris Hilton's constant style statements to rom-com movie characters with all the best looks (Monique's outfits from She's the Man were severely underappreciated), the 2000s blessed us with so many fashion moments that will go down in history books as truly jaw dropping. If you were guilty of wearing cargo pants and flip flops, then you have our permission to take a look back at all the cringe-worthy trends that made the early 2000s as quintessential as they were. Oh, and don't be afraid if you're inclined to buy a silky cami after this because we are, too.
