Is Ammonite Based on a True Story? Well, Kind Of

One watch through director Francis Lee's trailer for Ammonite, and you know that you're in for a steamy period drama between Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet. Winslet's character, paleontologist Mary Anning, works on the English coastline at Lyme Regis and barely gets by selling fossils to tourists. She reluctantly takes Charlotte Murchison (Ronan) under her wing along her excavations as Murchison recovers from a personal tragedy. As the women spend time together, it's clear that there's sexual and romantic tension between them. But is Ammonite based on a true story? Well, kind of. There really was a paleontologist named Mary Anning as well as a geologist named Charlotte Murchison. But you can look under every rock and you'd be hard-pressed to find any romantic connection between the two.

Much has been written about Anning, but we actually know very little about her personal life. Born in 1799, she came from a family of fossil hunters in the southern shores of Great Britain in Lyme Regis, which is known for its fossils from the Jurassic period. Anning lived in poverty for most of her life, but she maintained a living by collecting fossils, which she learned from her father. Today, she's credited with discovering the first ichthyosaurus fossil known to the London science community when she was between 10 to 12 years old. Her other important finds included the first complete plesiosaurus skeleton in 1823 and the first pterodactyl outside of Germany in 1828. Her work also pioneered the field of coprolite - or fossilized poop. Most of Anning's finds ended up in museums and collections without credit due to her lack of formal training as well as her gender and social class. The Geological Society of London, in fact, refused to admit women until 1904.

While we're privy to Anning's finds today, we don't know much about her relationships. Anning died in 1847 from breast cancer, 47 at the time of her death. She never married or had children. While Anning and Murchison were friends, there's no indication that they ever had a romantic affair. We do know that Murchison's husband brought Murchison along his travels and that she sketched and hunted fossils with Anning in Lyme Regis.

Lee, who directed Ammonite, has defended his decision to make Anning's story queer, as the film's premise drew controversy. "As a working class, queer film maker, I continually explore the themes of class, gender, sexuality within my work, treating my truthful characters with utter respect and I hope giving them authentic respectful lives and relationships they deserve," Lee tweeted in 2019.

You may have a bone to pick with Ammonite if you're looking for a 100% historically accurate biopic. But it may just be your rock if you're intrigued by a hot-and-bothered story about Victorian-era fossil hunters.

"It's a Desperate Time" - Miley Cyrus Stresses the Importance of Voting in the 2020 Election

As we countdown the days until the 2020 presidential election, celebrities are continuing to use their voices to stress the importance of voting. In an interview with Australian radio show Fitzy & Wippa, Miley Cyrus recently discussed the importance of the election during a time of great social and political unrest in the US and urged young voters to mobilize and head to the polls.

"I'm 27, I know I've never experienced an election this important before - and I'm not sure I ever will again," she said. "I can't express the importance enough - especially of young people - [of] getting out there, being active, and making sure that their friends and family are voting and have their information about mailing in, about the state of our country right now, the hate, the pain. It's just crucial that we get out there and make changes - and have someone fit for the job running our country."

"It's kind of rock bottom here right now. So I think that it's a desperate time - and that's when people really step up."

While constant news updates about the state of the country can be stressful, Miley believes it's important to channel that concern by focusing on the issues that matter most to you and voting accordingly. She went on to explain that she doesn't believe in the motto, "Don't worry, be happy." "I believe that worry is healthy," she said. "Worry is why we're washing our hands, why we're wearing our masks, why we're keeping our distance . . . nothing is just the way that it is. You can work for it, and I think that we're realizing that now."

Miley also added that she's proud of the way young people have stepped up to promote necessary positive change and that she hopes to see this impressive level of motivation reflected in the polls. "I think young people are really stepping up to the plate, really taking charge, and getting mobilized," she said. "I think it's also the dedication, working and advocating tirelessly. I really this so. It's kind of rock bottom here right now. So I think that it's a desperate time - and that's when people really step up." Whether this is your first time voting or your fifth, find out more about how you can register to vote here.

Fartlek Running Is All About Listening to Your Body - Give It a Try With These Tips

Treadmills make running convenient - even more so when you've got a machine in your home and bad weather is threatening your workout schedule. It's also true that running on a treadmill can be a little boring, especially if you're the type of person that finds running monotonous.

But, introducing interval training, like fartlek training, into your running sessions can help spice things up. Another bonus? According to Danny Mackey, the head coach for the Brooks Beasts Elite Pro Track Team, fartlek training - meaning "speed play" in Swedish - can be used at any point in your training, no matter your goal.

"Fartlek is a form of interval training, but the beauty of a fartlek is the workout is effort based and you do not need a track, or a known distance," Mackey said. "So you can vary the intervals to something like eight sets of 1-minute hard, then 2-minutes easy."

You can also pick any time interval for the faster running portion and any time interval for the easy running portion, Mackey said - the workout should just be continuous. (But, if you do need to stop for any reason, definitely do so!)

"When you are just starting to get into shape, [fartlek training] is great because you will not push yourself too hard given the intervals are the effort driver." You'll want to listen to your body here, because it's what dictates the pace you pick - in other words, you don't have to stick with a specific speed or cover a certain distance.

As for some fartlek rules of thumb: Mackey said to start the first repetition at an intensity that you know you can also finish the workout at. "And, from there, you can build into the quicker paces as you are more warmed up."

Mackey also shared a beginner fartlek idea to get you started. Start with a five-to-seven minute slow warmup run and finish with a five-to-seven minute cooldown run. While the "easy" intervals are noted, always modify and take rest periods as needed.

Fartlek Interval Workout:

  • 2-minutes hard, 1-minute easy
  • 1-minute hard, 1-minute easy
  • 30 seconds hard, 2-minutes easy
  • Repeat the above circuits three times

Confused By The Timeline on HBO's The Vow? Here's When It Was Actually Filmed

What We Know About India Oxenberg's Status After the Events of The Vow

Lovecraft Country Just Got Weird(er) - Let's Talk Through All the New Mysteries

Lovecraft Country left the adventure territory of the fourth episode, "A History of Violence," behind in favor of the horror it does well with its fifth episode, "Strange Case." William finally makes good on his promise to change Ruby's life, although it's a lot more gruesome than anyone could have expected. While Ruby is dealing with her own magical issues, Atticus and Leti learn the fate of Titus's pages and Yahima, leaving Montrose to face his own demons.

Just when I think I've figured Lovecraft Country out, it flips the script and leaves me wanting more. If you're like me and need a debrief of what just happened, keep reading for an explanation of Lovecraft Country's fifth episode.

What Is the Potion William Gives Ruby?

Ruby awakens in the body of a white woman, specifically, the body of Dell, whom we encountered working at the Braithwhite manor. After being taken by a couple of cops back to William's home, she gruesomely transforms into her regular self. This is the result of the potion, which doesn't have a name, that mimics metamorphosis. Similar to the Polyjuice Potion in Harry Potter, the user has to continue drinking the potion or else they will change back. Unlike Polyjuice, however, when Ruby's potion wears off while she's still "Hillary Davenport," she essentially sheds her skin like a butterfly sheds its cocoon.

Is Christina Braithwhite Actually William?

There's a reason we've never seen William and Christina in the same place. While we were led to believe he is her henchman (and possible lover), in actuality Christina and William are one and the same. Christina has been using the same potion "William" gives Ruby in the hopes that she can take over the lodge that is rightfully hers from Captain Lancaster. With the potion, Christina is able to be herself "uninterrupted," however it's still to be seen if Christina sees her true form as William, Christina, or something else entirely. After all, William does have that demonic branding on his chest.

Is Christina/William in Love With Ruby?

It is easy to write off William/Christina's relationship with Ruby as the means to an end. Ruby is Leti's half-sister and can access the Winthrop house while Christina can't. There are glimpses of Christina/William's feelings for Ruby sprinkled throughout the episode, with William telling Ruby seeing her was the first time he "felt magic when there was none" and Christina asking Ruby if she actually cares for William outside of what he can give her. Now that Ruby knows Christina/William's secret, it'll be interesting to see what route their relationship takes.

Is Christina a Follower of Hiram Epstein?

Since Christina is not the son Samuel Braithwhite wished for, perhaps she goes to Chicago in search of Hiram, as Horatio's sect was an "unofficial" branch of the Sons of Adam. William tells Ruby that Hiram was able to create magical doorways and was instrumental in the application of his metamorphosis beliefs. Now that we know Christina and William are the same person, it makes sense that Christina would be interested in these radical believers.

Is Captain Lancaster an Experiment of Hiram Epstein?

In "Holy Ghost," Captain Lancaster lets slip the truth about Leti's house, and with it, the implication that he supplied Hiram with Black people for his experiments. When Lancaster takes off his shirt, while Ruby is hiding in the closet with his prisoner, we can see jagged outlines where his body is stitched together. This suggests that Lancaster was a successful Frankenstein experiment, with Hiram being able to transfer Lancaster's head and arms to a Black man's torso.

Who Is in Captain Lancaster's Closet?

He's a thief whom Lancaster and his cronies have been interrogating in order discover the location of the "loot he stole." Much like Lancaster, he seems to be a Frankenstein experiment, covered in jagged stitch marks and still bleeding. Lancaster also says, "The dead always do," when the others ask if the prisoner has talked yet. Something tells me we've only scratched the surface of the horrific sh*t Lancaster and his fellow members are up to. Christina has Ruby place a charm/spell in Lancaster's office, so hopefully it's the beginning of the end for him.

Who Is Montrose's Lover?

Montrose is struggling with trying to protect Atticus and accepting himself for who he is. He finds solace in Sammy, crumbling into the bar owner's embrace with tears after he arrives for a tryst. When Sammy invites Montrose out with his fellow drag queens, Montrose finally starts to thrive. The music plays as Montrose takes Sammy in his arms and gives the performer a kiss in public.

Who Is on the Phone With Atticus?

This is the number for the woman he left in South Korea, whom he calls during the first episode. Atticus is shaking as he waits for her to pick up before asking, "How did you know?" This is likely in reference to her saying that he shouldn't have gone home in the first place. He also asks, "Well are you?" This potentially hints that she might have ties to the Sons of Adam or another form of magic. She tells him, "Now do you believe me?" From the look on his face, he will believe anything she tells him from here on out.

What Do the Letters D-I-E mean?

Atticus spends most of the episode trying to decode the language of Adam from the word protection and the initials in his name. He says his initials phonetically, which out loud, sounds like a callback to what the Martian princess from the first episode tells him. He comes to the conclusion it actually means "D-I-E," which does not bode well for our hero. Perhaps this configuration of letters also caused Samuel's ritual to fail.

Idris and Sabrina first began dating around March 2017 before he popped the question at a London screening of his film Yardie in February 2018. They eventually made things official with a gorgeous wedding in Morocco a year later, and now they've expanded their family!

Kim Kardashian Enjoys a Relaxing Beach Day Amid KUWTK Cancelation

Kim Kardashian is soaking up the last few days of summer. On Tuesday, the 39-year-old mogul enjoyed some R & R when she hit the beach in Malibu, CA. Clad in a wet crop top and beige bikini bottoms, Kim put on a sultry display as she walked on the sand. That same day, Kim announced on Instagram that Keeping Up With the Kardashians is ending after 20 seasons.

"After what will be 14 years, 20 seasons, hundreds of episodes and numerous spin-off shows, we are beyond grateful to all of you who've watched us for all of these years - through the good times, the bad times, the happiness, the tears, and the many relationships and children," she said in her statement. "We'll forever cherish the wonderful memories and countless people we've met along the way."

While Kim didn't reveal the actual reason for the cancellation, she did state that the family made the difficult decision together. Kris Jenner also recently told Ryan Seacrest in an interview that it was just "the right time" for KUWTK to end. Luckily, we still have two more seasons left of the beloved reality TV series, so let's enjoy it while we still can.

There's a Special Corner of TikTok Where Tom Felton Sings Hamilton and Reenacts Harry Potter

In an app full of dance routines and mind blowing challenges, Tom Felton has carved out a TikTok niche like no other. The Harry Potter actor started sharing videos in July 2020, and he dove straight into the content fans love to see: singing, magic, and plenty of Hamilton. Tom might've played the infamous Draco Malfoy with his intense Slytherin attitude, but on TikTok, he's closer to a Hufflepuff with his pure friendly energy. Just watch his very first clip, where he tries to cast a spell to get rid of some rain - am I wrong?

Outside of his Charms work, Tom also reenacts some of Draco's funniest moments and sings plenty of Hamilton . . . or Hamil-tom, as he calls it. You can also enjoy his rendition of "Hermione to Hawaii" which, I kid you not, is a song about Draco and Hermione Granger. There are plenty of other gems on Tom's account, and I'm sure, more to come. Please enjoy a few of the best ones he's posted so far.

I've Done YouTube Workouts For 5 Years, and These Are the 13 That Always Leave Me Dripping

YouTube workouts and I, we go way back. Back before I fell in love with the gym, I looked to YouTube for workouts I could do in my garage or even my dorm room in college: mostly bodyweight routines that left me feeling sweaty, satisfied, and filled with endorphins. I come back to some of those videos from time to time (more often now that my gym is closed during the pandemic) and am amazed at how challenging they still are. Just goes to show that you can work out for years and still not be able to do a minute of burpees without collapsing.

In my years of YouTube-ing my fitness routine, I compiled a playlist of my ultimate favorites, from full-body cardio to HIIT to ab burners. These are the routines that get me drenched time and time again but are so energizing and motivating that I keep coming back for more. Check out my all-time favorites ahead and try them for yourself; maybe they'll make your top ten list, too!

This Hocus Pocus Dance Cardio Workout Will Absolutely Put a Spell on You

It's fall now (not officially, but September doesn't count as summer and we all know it), which means all I want to do is grab a glass of pumpkin spice anything, light a bunch of candles, and watch Halloween movies all day. Running a Virtual Marathon Isn't All About Mileage: Pay Attention to Your Outer Knees

While most major marathons are canceled due to the ongoing health crisis, many runners are still pushing their personal distance and intensity records in preparation for virtual races - yes, virtual marathons, included.

And with marathon season comes iliotibial (IT) band syndrome season. It's true: from August to October, Dr. James Gladstone, MD, the chief of the Sports Medicine Service at Mount Sinai Health System, always sees a spike in running patients experiencing outer-knee pain.

Dr. Gladstone explained that roads have a pitch that allows for water drainage, and running in the same direction on these roads all the time can strain your IT band (a thick tendon that runs from the outer side of your pelvis and attaches to the knee). When your IT band is tight, it can rub against the outer thigh bone and create friction, pain, and inflammation on the outer knee, Dr. Gladstone said.

"The most common symptom is pain on the outer side of the knee that typically develops as you begin to run. Sometimes, one can run through it, but when it gets bad, it stops you from running often after only a quarter of a mile or so."

According to Dr. Gladstone, that pain can range from a low-grade achiness and soreness to stabbing, burning, or piercing discomfort.

He added that bad workout habits like ignoring the pain, not stretching or foam rolling, or not backing off your running distance or intensity can cause IT band syndrome to remain or worsen.

Warming up and cooling down before and after running can certainly help loosen up the muscle and tendon, and possibly prevent the onset of IT band syndrome. When doing so, make sure to focus on the flexibility in your hips, glutes, hamstrings, and calves, Dr. Gladstone said.

"When [IT band syndrome] gets really bad, you have no choice but to stop running. Foam rolling can be very helpful and targeted physical therapy can be equally helpful."

In some severe cases, surgery is necessary for recovery as well, so it's very important that you see a doctor if you're experiencing pain.

Many who are training at a marathon level consider running a passion. So, for the sake of longevity, switch up your route, love your foam roller, take breaks, and never hesitate to seek a doctor's advice when needed.
