The Vow: Everything We Know About Pam Cafritz's Life and Mysterious Death
In episode four of HBO's The Vow, we meet the anonymous Jane, a filmmaker and former DOS member. During her time in NXIVM, Jane learned of Pam (or Pamela) Cafritz's death and even created a memorial video for her. While we only hear of her briefly in the docuseries, Pam Cafritz is an important name when it comes to decoding everything that went down in NXIVM. Not only did she rank high in the organization, but she was also Keith Raniere's life partner. Cafritz supported him and his career to the point of enabling his darkest crimes. Even after she died, Cafritz remained relevant to his organization - here's how her story fits into NXIVM's bigger picture.
Cafritz's Life Before NXIVM
Cafritz was the daughter of Washington socialites Buffy and William Cafritz. In old footage featured in the docuseries, Raniere and Cafritz describe meeting at a ski trip when they were younger. Cafritz became closely involved with Raniere in the '90s when he launched Consumers' Buyline Inc. When the government accused CBI of being a pyramid scheme, she and Karen Unterreiner signed a consent agreement with prosecutors admitting their roles in CBI.
Cafritz's Complicity in NXIVM's Dark Side
When Raniere started NXIVM, Cafritz cofounded Jness, a women's group in NXIVM that focused on how gender influences women's roles in society and their relationships. Before her death, not only did Cafritz support Raniere as a business and romantic partner, but she also enabled his sketchy dealings. Cafritz has been brought up often by "Daniela," an undocumented woman who was a DOS slave kept in a house against her will for two years. When Daniela became impregnated by Raniere, Cafritz guided her through an abortion at a doctor's office. Daniela believes that Cafritz's role was to shield Raniere from liability, that she was "the defuser of bombs" who would "neutralize others."
Cafritz's complicit behavior can also be traced back to the '90s during Raniere's CBI days. According to The Times Union, she reportedly hired a 12-year-old girl to walk her dog, encouraging the girl to visit the townhouse she shared with Raniere. Later, Raniere raped the underage victim, whose mother worked for his company. He allegedly had around 60 sexual encounters with her. Two years later, in 1993, the girl reported the abuse to the police. She eventually signed a waiver saying that the claim that Raniere had sex with her was true but that she wouldn't press charges.
The Circumstances of Cafritz's Death
Cafritz reportedly died of renal cancer at age 57 in 2016. But there were rumors about Raniere poisoning her to get $8 million, which she allegedly bequeathed to him in her will. Frank Parlato, a well-known NXIVM defector, believes that Cafritz was poisoned. He has pointed out that Raniere managed her treatment and diet, as well as other women's.
After Cafritz died, Raniere and his co-conspirators used her identity and her credit card, charging over $300,000. But if Raniere did, in fact, inherit Cafritz's assets, why did he use her card? During Raniere's trial, Assistant US Attorney Moira Penza told the jury in her closing statement: "Why did he use Pam Cafritz's credit card after she was dead to fund his lifestyle? To avoid paying taxes." According to Penza, the "ultimate goal" for NXIVM and Raniere was zero tax.
Practical Magic Gave Us Some Wicked '90s Looks That We're Ready to Replicate Today
I know it's shameful to admit, but I watched Practical Magic for the first time just a few weeks ago. I know, I know - how could I have missed out on such an iconic fall film for the last 20 years? Well, I hope you'll forgive me once you realize what I've learned: there are some spellbinding style moments in this 1998 flick! The outfits Sally and Gillian (played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman) wear would absolutely be considered trendy looks today.
Since Sally and Gilly are polar opposites as sisters and witches, it makes sense that their style would reflect their differences. While Gilly gravitates toward sexy tube tops and wrap skirts, you can catch Sally more often in a cozy sweater or a comfortable pair of jeans. That said, their mutual love of slip dresses is not to be missed - it was the '90s, after all. If you're a fan of the movie, or of nostalgic fashion in general, take a trip down memory lane by reading through the pictures below. I've rounded up a few of the standout fashion moments from the film, with a few similar looks you can shop for yourself today.

After Struggling With Addiction, Getting Active and Eating Healthier Helped Erin Stay Sober
Prior to becoming sober in May 2018, Erin Laraia struggled with alcohol and drug abuse for years, since age 21 through 25. "In a weird way, I felt like I had control over something," Laraia explained, telling POPSUGAR that, when she got sober, she proceeded to feel many things in her life were out of her control, which was a "real hardship" for her. Her weight-loss journey that started that fall, though, grounded her in a different sense of control and gave her a specific goal to continue bettering herself as a person inside and out.
At the beginning of her sobriety, Laraia went to outpatient rehab and did continued care until February of 2019. In the past, she's tried many different methods of weight loss from WW (formerly Weight Watchers) to supplements such as Hydroxycut, which were not sustainable. "There really is no quick fix that will yield long-term results," she said. "It is truly a lifestyle change, and that means changing the way you think, talk to yourself, and your everyday routine."
Now 28, Laraia has lost 90 pounds in fewer than two years. Most importantly, though, "weight loss gave me something every day to work for," Laraia said. Ahead, check out more on how she stays active, nourishes her body, and balances her weight-loss and sobriety journeys, both of which she's seeing healthy results from.
Because Timing Is Everything, Here's How Long to Wait to Work Out After Eating
Picture this: you are ready to work out but realize you haven't eaten in a few hours. You're hungry and wanting something quick that will give you energy. Registered dietitian and certified personal trainer Lauren Cadillac, otherwise known as the Feel Good Dietitian, says whether or not a person can eat right before they exercise depends entirely on them and the workout they're about to do.
If you are going to eat fairly close to a workout, Cadillac recommends something that will digest quickly and provide fast energy like a banana, apple, or small granola bar. "Remember, fat and fiber are going to digest slowly, which is great to help keep us feeling full and satiated throughout the day, but right before a big workout, it's not what we're going for," she told POPSUGAR. Carbs are key for fuel the closer you get to a workout.
How Long Should I Wait to Work Out After Eating?
Again, Cadillac said it really depends on the individual and what they can tolerate, but a person should generally wait one to two hours after a meal before working out. "You can usually tell when you haven't given yourself enough time to digest," she explained. "Think sloshing stomach, burping, [feeling] overly full." If you ate a larger meal, she suggested waiting even up to three hours.
Cadillac explained, "Meals that are larger in volume or higher in fat and fiber are going to take longer to digest. Allowing some digestion to occur before hopping into a workout can make for a more comfortable workout and gives your body some time to extract the energy from that food, allowing you to perform better."
If you eat a smaller snack such as a yogurt or slice of toast with some peanut butter, Cadillac recommended waiting 30 to 60 minutes to exercise. Note: it also depends on what type of exercise you're doing. For instance, Cadillac said if you're going on a walk, the amount of time you wait won't matter as much as if you're planning on doing a high-intensity workout. You might also want to wait for a longer period of time before you do something like yoga where you could be going upside down.
An Example of What to Eat Before You Work Out
Here's a breakdown of what you might want to eat before you work out, according to Cadillac.
- Two to three hours before: Standard meal balanced with carbs, protein, and fats. Think half of your plate coming from veggies, 1/4 from protein, and 1/4 from carbohydrates. If you plan to do an extremely strenuous workout like long-distance running or heavy lifting, perhaps increase your carbohydrate intake for more energy. Try a grain bowl with veggies and a protein or a burrito bowl with rice, veggies, and a protein.
- 60 to 90 minutes before: Keep this a bit lighter than the meals listed above. You can eat something similar but maybe slightly smaller in volume. A peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich is an easy idea. Also try Greek yogurt with some berries and granola.
- 15 to 30 minutes before: Something light like a banana, apple, orange, piece of toast, or granola bar.
Should You Eat Before Morning Workouts?
Although some people prefer to work out on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, Cadillac still recommends eating something before a morning workout. You may find yourself losing energy or stamina during your workout if you don't eat, she explained, adding that "skipping breakfast in general can impact our hormones, leading to increased hunger throughout the day. Couple that with an early-morning workout, and you may be setting yourself up for [overeating] later on in the day." It's a good idea to fuel your body before your workout because your performance might be impacted otherwise.

The 15 Most Terrifying Stephen King Books, Ranked
Stephen King, dubbed the "king of horror" by fans and critics alike, has been scaring and delighting readers ever since his first novel was released in 1974. King's work includes more than 60 novels, five nonfiction books, 19 screenplays, and 11 collections of short fiction. His stories are the basis for a frighteningly large amount of film and television adaptations, and a number of King's fictional terrors - Pennywise, Annie Wilkes, Jack Torrance - have become ubiquitous pop culture fixtures. "Prolific" hardly seems a sufficient descriptor.
King's books are notable, of course, for their sharp deployment of classic horror conventions: the monsters that stick in readers' minds long after the back cover of the book has been closed, the nightmarish scenarios that translate into iconic imagery for many film adaptations of King's work. But King has also elevated the horror genre with a focus on characterization - his books delve into the layers of experience and idiosyncrasy that coalesce into people's fears.
Every entry in King's canon speaks to the author's unique ability to terrify, but some novels stand above the rest. If you're looking for some Halloween-appropriate reading material, take a look at my ranking of King's 15 best books.
Our 35 Picks For the Fall's Most Exciting New Books
Nothing says fall like pumpkin spice lattes, crunchy leaves, and an abundance of new reads to look forward to. Thankfully, despite everything else in the world feeling a little upside down, fall is bringing a bevy of must-read books that are just begging to join your TBR. Publishers seem to have saved the best for last this year, with the next few months bringing new releases from the likes of Philippa Gregory, Ruth Ware, and Christina Lauren. There are also plenty of highly anticipated debuts in nearly every genre, from nonfiction to romance - and the requisite spooky reads to get you in the mood for Halloween, of course.
No matter what kind of book you're looking for, this list of the best books of the fall has you covered.
Old Navy Dropped Affordable Leopard-Print Activewear, and It's Fall Workout Motivation
Workout gear has become incredibly varied lately - prints, pant lengths, and styles continue to get cuter. Where I once was choosing between basic legging variations like cropped length vs. full length, I can now sort through a plethora of options that run that gamut from printed biker shorts to tie-dye prints and even tropical. And one retailer in particular is experimenting with all of these styles regularly. Old Navy not only keeps the price point reasonable, but maintains high-quality fabrics in super cute prints. Right now, I'm on a serious leopard print kick and these nine pieces are catching my eye big time.
If All You've Got Is 10 Minutes, These Ab Workout Videos Are Perfect
To each their own, but I really don't need more than 10 minutes tops to feel my abs beg (no, demand) for a stoppage to the core workout I'm doing. More important than timing is exercise variety, meaning that you're diversifying the types of moves you're doing. Try some dynamic moves, ones on your feet or lying down, and others that bring a real challenge such as a reverse plank with a leg lift. It's also important that you hit different parts of your core - you should definitely think outside of the box, because there's a world far beyond crunches waiting for you.
Keep reading for trainer-led ab workout videos that will take you 10 minutes (or less!) to complete right at home. Some require dumbbells; but, of course, you can modify the workouts as needed for your fitness level. Quick and effective workouts always make us feel like we've unlocked a secret to making the most out of our day!
If you're looking for more videos aside from the ones ahead, you can try these these dumbbell-only ab workouts, these sessions that are entirely about planks, or this equipment-free routine from a trainer.

Grab Your Mini Resistance Band, and Work Your Upper Body With These 3 Moves
If you're looking to work your upper-body muscles, get a mini resistance band and do these three exercises shared by Le Sweat founder and certified strength and conditioning specialist Charlee Atkins, featured on our Instagram Live workouts. They may look easy since you're not lifting heavy weights, but once you try them, you'll see how intense they feel!
Don't expect to break a sweat or be worried that you didn't. Atkins told POPSUGAR that mini resistance bands are used for mobility and muscle activation. She said they don't provide enough resistance to give you "huge muscle gains," but they are an important tool to help "improve your form for all the major compound lifts." Mini bands are also convenient! Atkins said you can throw them in your bag so you always have some sort of fitness equipment with you. Plus, they're fairly inexpensive and easy to find! Check out the upper-body exercises ahead.

"Auntie" Taylor Swift Just Sent Gigi Hadid the Cutest Handmade Gift For Her Baby Girl
Gigi Hadid gave another glimpse of her baby girl with Zayn Malik, just a few days after the couple revealed that she was born the weekend of the 19th. On her Instagram Stories Friday night, the model shared a photo of her daughter's tiny baby hand over an adorable pink satin blanket, one of the many gifts her friends had sent to celebrate the exciting news. The quilt was handmade by none other than the pair's longtime friend, "Auntie" Taylor Swift.
"Auntie @taylorswift made this!!," Gigi wrote on the snap. The new mom only showed a peek of the blanket, but we couldn't help but notice it looked pretty similar to the one Taylor had gifted Katy Perry's daughter, Daisy, earlier this month. We wonder if Gigi's daughter, whose name has yet to be revealed, has a beautiful embroidery on her blanket, as well. Taylor and Gigi's friendship dates back to 2014, as the model was even a member of the singer's famous girl squad. The "cardigan" singer also collaborated with Zayn back in 2016 for their hit song, "I Don't Wanna Live Forever." Get a closer look at the sweet gift below.

Netflix's newest true crime documentary, American Murder: The Family Next Door, takes an in-depth look at the Chris Watts case and the chilling moments that led up to him murdering his entire family. In 2018, Chris's wife Shannan Watts and their two daughters - 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste - went missing in Frederick, CO. Told entirely through archival footage, the documentary - which will premiere on Sept. 30 - takes a close look at the subsequent investigation with Chris as the primary suspect.
Once Shannan and the children had been missing for several days, Watts was taken in for questioning by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI). During the examination, Chris was given a polygraph test - or lie detector test - to help determine his level of involvement in the case. Chris denied any claims that he had anything to do with's Shannan death or the deaths of their children and insisted he had no knowledge about where they were. In a 2018 Lifetime documentary titled Chris Watts: Confessions of a Killer, CBI agent Tammy Lee, who issued Watts's polygraph test, explained that he was being wildly untruthful during the examination, as proven by his polygraph score. "The type of testing format that I used, we would consider someone to be deceptive if they were a negative four or below," Lee said. "Chris Watts scored negative 18."
Despite failing the test, Chris insisted that he had been truthful, leading some to question the reliability of lie detector tests. In the past, crime investigations have often relied on polygraph exams to rule out any suspects and move the case forward. But over the years, officials have debated the validity of polygraph tests on the basis that, "there is no evidence that any pattern of physiological reactions is unique to deception," according to a report published by the American Psychological Association in 2004.
Polygraph tests examine heart rate or blood pressure, respiration, and skin conductivity, all of which may indicate someone is being truthful but don't give definitive evidence that someone is lying or to what extent. So, while it is often believed that polygraph tests can tell when someone is lying, in reality, they only suggest that someone might be lying.
Chris Watts's polygraph score aside, the investigation provided enough additional information to eventually result in his arrest. Watts was eventually sentenced to serve five life sentences without the possibility of parole on Nov. 19, 2018. This Throwback Clip of Harry Styles Saying "Oh Sh*t" Is My New ASMR
The internet somehow knew I needed a pick-me-up this week, so it worked a little magic and resurfaced a short but oh-so-sweet video of Harry Styles saying, "Oh sh*t." It's not just any ol' "oh sh*t," though, and most certainly not the kind you exclaim under your breath after stubbing your toe or running into an ex in public. It was uttered with a certain innocent, dad-like energy that has me, and will likely have you, slamming the "play" button repeatedly to witness it on a loop.
First shared last year and now making the rounds again, the clip captures Harry interacting with a fan on the streets of Hollywood after scooping up some groceries. Said fan, who goes by Kid the Wiz on social media, delivers a dramatic to-camera intro of the "Adore You" singer and proceeds to flip his hat, making it do a 360 and land back on his head. In response, Harry lets out his effortless "oh sh*t" and a laugh before giving him a handshake. The video may only be eight seconds long, but there are so many details that need to be unpacked, so naturally, I've chosen to dissect it moment by moment in a bulleted list that literally no one asked for.
- First and foremost, I must acknowledge Harry's outfit. It's giving me serious eighth-grade science teacher vibes, and I'm honestly not opposed. The pleated khaki pants! The leather, tassel-adorned loafers! The sunglasses pushing back the hair! The half-zipped jacket! I'm very here for this casual grocery shopping lewk.
- I must urgently know what Harry purchased at the store. He appears to be toting two full bags, but it's damn near impossible to tell what's hiding inside. Perhaps some strawberries to enjoy on a summer evenin'?
- Please kindly direct your attention to Harry's right thumb, which remains awkwardly raised throughout the video. Legend has it his thumb hasn't been put down to this day.
- I love that little glimpse at his black nail polish as he goes in for the handshake. I wonder if he's more of an Essie or OPI guy.
- He's channeling the same energy I possess while pretending to be impressed by any child's "cool trick" they want to show me. But honestly, I love him for that - he's so darn sweet.
- Now that I've watched this video upwards of 67 times, I just might have to get "'Oh sh*t' - Harry Styles, 2019" engraved on my tombstone.
- It's truly only a matter of time before the "oh sh*t"-themed fan merch starts popping up on Etsy. I'd totally buy a candle with the phrase plastered on the label.
I'll be filing this one under "videos to revisit when I need to be reminded that not all men are trash," right alongside Harry's "Watermelon Sugar" music video. Now, please excuse me while I play this audio on a loop as my personal form of ASMR.
