Amanda Kloots Responds After Trump Tells Americans Not to Fear COVID-19: "It's Beyond Hurtful"

On Oct. 5, Donald Trump shared on Twitter that he would be leaving Walter Reed Medical Center after three days of being treated for COVID-19. "Feeling really good!" he wrote in a tweet. "Don't be afraid of Covid. Don't let it dominate your life." With over 200,000 coronavirus deaths in the US, many medical experts and impacted families alike took issue with Trump's both insensitive and harmful tweet. Amanda Kloots, who lost her husband, Nick Cordero, to COVID-19 complications in July, responded to Trump's tweet on her Instagram Tuesday, and she said it best.

"To all the over 208,000 Americans who lost loved ones to this virus - I stand by you, with you, holding your hand," she wrote alongside a screenshot of the tweet. "Unfortunately it did dominate our lives didn't it? It dominated Nick's family's lives and my family's lives. I guess we 'let it' - like it was our choice?? Unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to spend two days in the hospital." After months of battling coronavirus, Cordero died at age 41 on July 5, and was survived by Kloots and their 1-year-old son, Elvis.

"I cried next to my husband for 95 days watching what COVID did to the person I love. It IS something to be afraid of."

"I cried next to my husband for 95 days watching what COVID did to the person I love," Kloots continued. "It IS something to be afraid of. After you see the person you love the most die from this disease you would never say what this tweet says. There is no empathy to all the lives lost. He is bragging instead. It is sad. It is hurtful. It is disgraceful." She expanded further in a tearful series of Instagram Stories, sharing she was and is still afraid of the virus. "I think about if I got it, if I got as sick as Nick, little Elvis, he doesn't have his mom anymore. So I'm afraid."

Kloots criticized Trump for lacking empathy for Americans who have suffered from the virus and are grieving the losses of those who have. "It's beyond hurtful," she said, explaining that his diagnosis and recovery could have been an opportunity for the president to be kind, and call for Americans to wear masks and social distance. "Say something that might make the people that you lead feel like you got us, that you're wrapping your arms around us, that you now understand, maybe a little bit, what we went through and what we're going through." Read Kloots's powerful response ahead.

I Bought a Peloton During the Pandemic, and It Has Improved My Life in Ways I Never Expected

When shelter-in-place orders first took effect amid the COVID-19 pandemic, I had no problem shielding myself from the world. I found new ways to keep myself occupied, and my mental health was better than ever before. But as the months went by, things began to change, and I found myself struggling to stay afloat. It was really hard to manage my bipolar 2 disorder amid so much uncertainty. Without a routine, I was draining my bank account, forgetting to cook meals, and drinking my problems away.

It wasn't until I found a new love in cycling that I was able to get my head above water again. It may sound cliché, but buying a Peloton bike was well worth the investment. In a way, it changed my life.

When I first started cycling, committing to a class was one of my greatest challenges. If I'm being honest, I jumped right into some 45-minute classes, which kicked my butt and tired me out. I didn't feel motivated to continue - but after some time, I decided to take 10 to 20 minutes out of my day to get back on the bike. I was working with a trainer who told me to give it 10 minutes, and if I couldn't go any further, then at least I committed 10 minutes to working out. It was better than nothing, especially at a time when so many of us were struggling to even get out of bed.

Something magical happened during that time. Once I began selecting classes that were 15, 20, or 30 minutes long, I found myself staying on the bike longer. I no longer wanted to give up, and instead felt compelled to keep cycling until the class was over. I was challenging myself again - something I hadn't been been able to bring myself to do while sitting at home.

Challenging yourself is a good thing. If you suffer from depression, bipolar disorder, or anxiety, you know how hard it can be to stay focused. When I finally focused on my classes, I started to see an improvement in other areas of my life. When I began beating my baseline outputs and crushing my personal records (PRs) on the Peloton, my whole attitude shifted. I felt . . . free.

I've created a routine for myself, which is important when adjusting to a new reality where I'm venturing out in public less.

While it isn't a cure-all, exercise is widely considered to be helpful in managing conditions like bipolar disorder, in part because it triggers a release of endorphins, which improve your mood and overall sense of wellbeing. For me, it's been a huge help. Riding my Peloton makes me feel empowered - that is, once I get 10 minutes in and past my pre-ride jitters - and it has even helped me feel a little less anxious about COVID-19. I've created a routine for myself, which is important when adjusting to a new reality where I'm venturing out in public less. I'm currently working from home, so having the opportunity to hop on the bike to break up my day has been really rewarding. I never realized how necessary it was to clear my head during the workday until now.

I started working out on the Peloton when I was in a really uncertain place with COVID-19, and I'm so glad I did. My mood is better, my thoughts are clearer, I'm sleeping better at night, and I'm putting my faith into trusting a new process. Mentally, I'm in a much better place.

This Skater Nails Mesmerizing Routines and Wants Other Plus-Size Women to Do It, Too

When Shirah Wepman was dealing with a depressive episode last year, a friend recommended she start roller skating. "My physical health was declining as well, due to not getting off the couch and sleeping all day," the roller skater told POPSUGAR. Roller skating was a fun activity that would be easy on her joints, a way to get moving and try something new.

Wepman decided to share her experience on Instagram, she said, "because I haven't seen too many skaters like me. I want to show everyone that anyone can skate if they put the time and effort in." Opening up on social media hasn't always been easy; she said she's gotten backlash, and it's taken its toll. "I just try to remind myself that I have so much love and support behind me, that it's making all the hate worth it."

Being vocal about her support for other plus-size skaters is crucial, Wepman added. "I know what it's like to feel 'too big' for a sport that is dominantly fit, beautiful people," she explained. "We need to bring awareness to the fact that anybody can skate, no matter what shape they are." To other plus-size people thinking about pulling on a pair of skates, Wepman's message is to go for it. "It's absolutely terrifying, but I have done it and seen many others as well," she said. "Be kind to yourself, and don't beat yourself up."

Check out some of Wepman's hypnotizing and empowering clips ahead!

I Started Working Out Consistently, and It Seriously Improved My Periods

Ever since I woke up bleeding the day before my 12th birthday, I've had a love-hate relationship with my period. Yay, I'm a woman! Boo, I have to deal with intense pain, mood swings, and more for the next several decades. Lately, it's gotten worse. Nausea, digestive problems, painful cramps days before any blood would flow - yeah, my period basically sucks. For me and many others, that "time of the month" isn't just the few days of bleeding and back pain. It can start up to two weeks before, with bloating, irritability, fatigue, diarrhea, and a host of other symptoms that are annoying, embarrassing, or just plain exhausting. That's why, when I heard that working out may help ease symptoms of menstruation, I knew I had to commit to exercising more.

Of course, exercise has tons of benefits - so I was unsurprised to find that, once I started working out five times a week for at least 30 minutes, my energy levels went up. That is, until I started my period for the first time, about two weeks into my workout routine. Then, it was the same old story: I was back to wearing an electric heating pad all day, taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, and craving junk food, which while common for my periods, can lead to even more bloating and stomach pain. Fun, right? I'll admit that I was a little bummed that my period was the same. But to be fair, it hadn't been that long. I knew I needed to keep going.

After six weeks of consistent workouts, something changed. My period started with absolutely no warning, because I had none of the usual symptoms.

After six weeks of consistent workouts, something changed. My period started with absolutely no warning, because I had none of the usual symptoms. This time around, there was no sickness, very mild cramps, and a lighter-than-normal flow that lasted only three days instead of the usually four to five. I noticed something else, too: my period started about 30 days after my last one. Usually, I am very irregular, with anywhere from 27 to 36 days between cycles.

I was also able to keep working out while on my period, when I normally I can't. It's kind of hard to do squats with a heating pad strapped to your back. Regular exercise also helped lower my cravings for unhealthy foods (although, chocolate is always considered essential).

I'm not saying that working out is some magic formula that will make all your period problems go away, especially if you have a more serious condition, such as PCOS or endometriosis. Everyone's period is different, too. Sometimes your symptoms even change month to month - especially if you're stressed - so it's impossible to know exactly how working out will affect your cycle.

I'm happy to report that after several more menstrual cycles, my period has stayed consistent, my painful cramps have eased considerably, and life overall just feels much more manageable when I'm on my period than it did before. (Full disclosure: the mood swings haven't really gone away, but that rush of endorphins that comes from finishing a good workout helps.) Now that I know what it feels like to have a "happy period," I'm more motivated than ever to keep up my workout routine.

An Open Letter to the Cast of Supernatural: Thank You and Carry On

Dear Supernatural Cast,

We've never met, but all of you mean a lot to me. Over the years, Supernatural has helped me find comfort and courage when I've needed it the most, and that wouldn't have been possible without you all. The list of shows that consistently bring me peace is short, and perhaps ironically, Supernatural is on that list. Whatever I'm dealing with or healing from, I always know I can count on the Winchester boys - and the Supernatural universe as a whole - to make me feel safe. I can't count how many nights I've fallen asleep to Sam and Dean conversing in the Impala, and while that may not sound like a compliment, trust me when I tell you that it is.

I started watching the show during the summer of 2015, and I was instantly a fan. I'd recently broken up with a long term boyfriend who'd grown increasingly abusive and toxic over the course of nearly four years. After the abuse I'd experienced during that relationship - plus the unwanted experiences I'd endured at the hands of other men and boys throughout my life - it was healing to see two male characters entirely devoted to protecting people, with more good men joining their cause along the way.

As a bisexual woman, it was also incredibly empowering to watch Felicia Day's character, Charlie, be so visibly and unashamedly queer (and nerdy) over the course of the show. As someone who was born and raised in the Bible Belt, I can attest that representation like hers is no small thing. Charlie's courage, authenticity, and distaste for authority may not be the reason I came out in a big way in 2016, but it certainly didn't hurt.

I've also found myself inspired by the show during my travels. In my late twenties, I took my Chevy on multiple cross-country road trips across the United States, and I couldn't help but think of Supernatural each time. I'm sure this was partly because I've always got classic rock giants - like Led Zeppelin and ACDC - in my Spotify queue, but it was also because Supernatural captures the joy of driving a car you've grown to love and depend on, whether you're crossing multiple state lines in pursuit of a goal or you're picking up beer and pie from the store. Sadly, I've had to cancel several road trips in 2020, but watching Supernatural makes me feel excited for the day I can criss-cross the country again.

I can't speak for the entire Supernatural fandom, and I'm no psychic, but I'm confident the show will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to everyone who enjoys it and identifies with its characters. I know Supernatural will always be special to me, and I'm grateful to be part of the community it's inspired.

Thank you all so much for all your hard work over the years, and for your ongoing dedication to the Supernatural family.

Carry on,
Liz

We Can’t Wait ’Til December to Dig Into These New Beauty Advent Calendars From Sephora

If there ever was a year for people to deserve a little treat every single day, it's 2020. While you could ration out goodies from a set of minis whenever you please, Advent calendars were made for this very purpose, with a little surprise safely hidden behind each window.

Advent-calendar season is always exciting, but the new choices at Sephora just may tempt you to pick up a couple for yourself, and to share the love with friends you may not see in person this year.

Not in the holiday spirit just yet? We wouldn't blame anyone who wants to use these to count down the days to a random Wednesday in November instead.

This 3-Minute Blackpink "Ice Cream" Workout Is a Perfect Dance Cardio Warmup

"Ice Cream," the sweet and poppy summer track from BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez, has already found a permanent place on our workout playlist, so a dance cardio routine to the song sounds right up our alley. As usual, choreographer and dance fitness instructor Mylee Dance has us covered. She choreographed with a quick, fun routine that looks like a great cardio warm-up, with hip rolls to engage your abs, a few squats, and plenty of punches to work your arms. The song isn't too fast, which means you can keep up with the moves and slowly ramp up your heart rate. It's a great way to get warm for a longer workout or serve as a full, fast routine on its own. Try the workout for yourself above, and give Mylee's BTS "Dynamite" workout a spin if you want more!

No More Fuss! These 28 Adjustable and Reusable Masks Are Easy to Use

How to Deal With a Tattoo Infection (and How to Prevent It From Happening Again)

There's a lot that people should know about tattoos before taking the plunge and actually getting them, two of them being the design and location, but another aspect that not too many people take into account beforehand is what to do in the case of a skin infection. Should you immediately see a doctor? What are the signs it's infected compared to normal steps in the healing process? And what are the odds of your tattoo getting infected anyway?

While you should expect to feel some amount of discomfort after getting a tattoo, tattoo infections aren't all that common, though that all depends on how you take care of them as soon as you leave the tattoo parlor.

"Tattoos generally get infected due to improper aftercare," LA-based tattoo artist Johnny Dagger told POPSUGAR. "The client should be very careful about how they clean and maintain the tattoo." Going to a tattoo shop without the proper licensing or sanitation measures in place also puts you at risk of your body art later getting infected, so Dagger recommends doing your research and making sure you're in contact with a trustworthy artist at a reputable tattoo parlor before booking your appointment.

In the event that your tattoo still gets infected even after doing your research, the issue likely lies somewhere in your aftercare practices. Read ahead for some tips on what you should do when your tattoo gets infected.

I Feel So Much Better Knowing This Yoga Mat Bag Keeps My Mat Germ-Free

Since the novel coronavirus pandemic, I'm much more aware of how many surfaces we encounter that can carry germs or viruses. One I never considered before was my yoga mat. Sure, I cleaned the top of it after each use but never thought about what may be lurking on the bottom of the mat.

Think about it - whether you're using your mat in your living room, garage, or studio, what do you when you're finished? My guess is you roll it up as I've always done. But this simple, seemingly ordinary act can cover your workout with unwanted germs and dirt. When we roll up our mats, whatever lies on the ground under them is then transferred to the top where it waits patiently to move to our hands, face, and body during our next workout. Gross! These days, my yoga mat sees the most action in my garage, and I don't even want to think about what's on that floor.

That's why I was relieved to learn about the Carry Your Om Yoga Mat Bag ($40), which incorporates a full-length mat liner, so the bottom of your mat never touches the top of your mat. The patent-pending design prevents the germs underneath your mat from getting to the top of your mat, while also giving you an easy way to carry and store it.

How does it work? Instead of rolling up your mat when you're finished and putting it in a bag, you lay the liner on the top of the mat, then roll it up. Zip it closed to keep the mat in place and adjust the strap to carry it however you want. There's also a zipper pocket on the exterior for a phone, keys, wallet, etc.

Now I can work out on the ground without the ground finding its way on me. Give this mat a try, and you can rest easy knowing the dirt and germs on your floor won't tarnish all those cleansing breaths you took in your practice.

Strengthen Your Abs in 10 Minutes With This Equipment-Free Pilates Workout

Planks are one of the best ab-strengthening exercises you can do, but doing them every time you work out can get boring. To continue to challenge and strengthen your abs, Khetanya Henderson, Speir Pilates classical Pilates mat- and reformer-certified trainer, Glo instructor, created this 10-minute Pilates bodyweight ab workout. "The purpose of this workout is to improve core strength and spinal mobility," Henderson told POPSUGAR.

With consistency, this workout will help create greater stability in your core, which will allow you to perform movements like holding heavy objects and walking better, and it can even help improve your posture. Additionally, a stronger core can help improve your overall athletic performance.

No matter your fitness goals, a strong core is essential to feeling better and moving at your best. This workout may look easy, but trust us, it is challenging and will more than likely have you feeling sore every time you laugh, twist, or bend your torso for a few days. If strengthening your core is on your agenda, grab some water and yoga mat and get ready to work.

Khetanya Henderson's 10-Minute Ab Workout

Equipment needed: a yoga mat

You don't need to do a warmup before starting this workout, but if you'd like, you can follow this dynamic warmup to ensure that your muscles are warm. Henderson said to perform one round of the following Pilates sequence. Take three to five seconds of rest in between each move by hugging your knees into your chest. Move at your own pace and take as much time as you need to perform each exercise. "Connection of mind and body is most important for Pilates work," Henderson emphasized. After you've finished the workout, you can cool down with a gentle stretching routine.
