Joey King Wants You to Vote - and Get a Bob Haircut While You're at It

It's been a busy day full of errands for Joey King. Not only did she drop off her early mail-in ballot for the 2020 election, but she also got a major haircut. Instead of the long, layered style she's sported for the last few months, King is now rocking a short, soft blunt bob.

In a carousel of images posted on Oct. 8, King showed off her new hairstyle, complete with the "Vote" face mask that she wore to the salon. "Who has short hair now and voted today?!?! THIS GAL," read the caption. The second image she shared was of the designated box in Los Angeles where she dropped off her completed ballot and a thumbs up.

King is no stranger to short hair or experimenting with her look. Over the years, she's had everything from a buzz cut to bleached-blond hair, pink highlights, and bangs - and she always looks amazing.

What You Need to Know About Kamala Harris's Husband, Douglas Emhoff

Kamala Harris made history in more ways than one when Joe Biden announced her as his running mate, as the senator is the first Black and Asian American woman to become the vice presidential nominee of a major party. Though Harris initially entered the political scene back in 2003 as district attorney of San Francisco, and went on to serve as attorney general of California and US senator for the past three years, her historic nomination has sparked renewed public interest in the politician's personal life.

And while Harris would represent a number of firsts as a vice president on her own, her husband, Douglas Emhoff could also become the first-ever second gentleman. Over the years, Harris has become a household name due to her impressive political record, as well as her refusal to be silenced or interrupted by her male colleagues, but Emhoff has kept a lower profile and more recently stepped into the public eye, particularly while campaigning for his wife's vice presidential run. If you'd like to learn more about the potential future second gentleman or even join in on the #DougHive - a group of fans dedicated to supporting him - keep reading to find out more about Emhoff.

How to Tell If You're Just Shy or Battling Social Anxiety, According to Experts

If you're an introvert, you may feel insecure or even wonder if there's something "wrong" with you because you don't enjoy making small talk or meeting new people as much as everyone else. It can become especially tricky when you begin college and find yourself starting over, surrounded by unfamiliar faces. You may even become concerned that you have social anxiety disorder, and that's the real reason you sometimes choose not to socialize. But experts say there's a major difference between being shy and having social anxiety disorder. Here's how to know where you stand.

What It Means to Be Shy or Introverted

Carla Marie Manly, PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist and author, told POPSUGAR that although someone who's shy may be reticent in nature, they don't feel the intense fear that's common for people with social anxiety. "A shy person often will be happy and at peace during social gatherings, but will tend to prefer being in the background rather than being center stage," Dr. Manly explained.

Emin Gharibian, PsyD, founder and director of Verdugo Psychological Associates, agreed, noting that social anxiety stems from a fear of being rejected or humiliated. "[An introvert] might feel a little shy or uneasy, but they'll be able to endure the situation and warm up to it," Dr. Gharibian told POPSUGAR. "The key difference is that they don't have that intense fear or anxiety of being negatively evaluated." He explained that shyness is a dispositional trait, rather than a diagnosable mental health condition.

How to Tell If You Have Social Anxiety

Social anxiety disorder is a different story, and it's diagnosed using very specific criteria. Dr. Manly explained that, according to the DSM-5 - the manual used by health care providers to assess and diagnose mental health disorders - "social anxiety is a disorder in which an individual experiences marked anxiety in social situations that involve possible scrutiny or evaluation by others." A person with social anxiety disorder fears rejection as a result of behaving in ways that they believe will be perceived negatively by others. "The fear and anxiety experienced must be out of proportion to any actual level of threat that may be present in the situation," Dr. Manly said. In fact, people with social anxiety are often so afraid of being judged that they avoid social situations as much as possible.

In order for a formal diagnosis to be made, the anxiety and avoidance must cause significant distress and impairment and affect an individual's ability to function in social, occupational, and other important areas of life. "Imagine someone that's so anxious about public speaking that they avoid it at all costs because they are afraid of being humiliated, and that causes them to do poorly in their job or at school," Dr. Gharibian said. According to the DSM-5, these symptoms must be persistent and last for at least six months before a diagnosis can be made.

"For those with social anxiety, life can feel like a minefield when they're not at home or in situations that are perceived as safe," Dr. Manly said. The patient often feels extremely ashamed or "defective," and it's common for these feelings to worsen over time. "Social anxiety can be extremely debilitating for the anxious individual," she explained, interfering with everyday interactions and activities that others take for granted.

If this sounds like a painfully accurate description of your life, schedule an appointment with a therapist to be evaluated for social anxiety disorder. Like many mental illnesses, the condition is treatable - typically through a combination of therapy and medication. You won't magically transform into a social butterfly, but with the right treatment, you have a good chance of reaching a point where social anxiety no longer controls your life.

Crispy Persian Rice (Tahdig) With Spiced Golden Chickpeas

Half Baked Harvest

Notes

Tip: If your rice doesn't come out in one piece, please don't stress - just scoop out the rice as is, and serve. It's going to be delicious, no matter what.

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups basmati rice
    Kosher salt
    3 tablespoons plain yogurt
    3 tablespoons salted butter
    3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 cup fresh mint or cilantro
    1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 (16 ounce) can chickpeas, drained and patted dry
2-4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced or smashed
    2 shallots, thinly sliced
    1 teaspoon ground turmeric
    1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes
    2 tablespoons raw sesame seeds
2 cups roughly torn greens, such as kale, chard, or spinach

Directions

  1. Bring 6 cups of water and about 1/4 cup salt to a boil in a large pot. It seems like a lot of salt, but it's not, trust me.
  2. Rinse the rice under water. Once the water is boiling, add the rice, and stir. Cook, stirring occasionally until al dente, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain into a sieve and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking.
  3. In a bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of the rice with the yogurt.
  4. Melt together the butter and oil in a 10-inch skillet set over medium heat. When the butter melts, add the yogurt coated rice and level it out with the back of your spoon. Pile the remaining rice into the pan, mounding it toward the center. Using the handle of a wooden spoon, gently dig 5-6 holes into the rice down to the bottom of the skillet. There should be enough oil in the pan so that you can see it bubbling up the sides. Add oil if needed.
  5. Cook the rice over medium heat, turning the pan a quarter turn every 5 minutes to ensure even browning. Cook until you start to see a golden crust begin to form at the sides of the pan, about 15 minutes. Then reduce the heat to low and continue cooking another 15 to 20 minutes. The edges of the crust should be golden, after about 35-40 minutes total.
  6. Meanwhile, make the chickpeas. Heat a large, high-sided skillet over medium heat. Add the oil, chickpeas, garlic, shallots, turmeric, paprika, a pinch of red pepper flakes, and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally until the chickpeas are crisped all over, about 8-10 minutes. Add the sesame seeds and greens, tossing to combine. Cook 2 minutes, until toasted, and remove from the heat.
  7. Run a spatula along the edges of the other pan to release the rice. Carefully flip the rice onto a platter. Serve topped with chickpea mixture and fresh cilantro or mint.

This Bride Brought the Drama With Her Gown's Floor-Grazing Sleeves - and Those Sneaks!

When Adam proposed to Liv, he went all out and planned a treasure hunt for her. Along the way she got a delicious breakfast, professionally done makeup, a manicure, and then car took her to a fancy hotel. She walked into a hotel room where Adam was kneeling and he asked her to marry him as her favorite song played. Liv said "yes," and they drank Champagne and celebrated their engagement.

They wanted a warm and intimate wedding with only close friends and family. The ceremony took place midday followed by an amazing lunch and they ended up dancing through the evening. The festivities continued through the night at the New Gold Mountain, a cocktail lounge in Melbourne, Australia.

One of the most eye-catching components of their 2018 wedding day was Liv's avant-garde gown. When selecting her dress, she didn't want anything traditional. After trying on multiple dresses Liv felt hopeless, but a sales assistant convinced her to try one last gown. It was a white Alex Perry dress, which Liv was not keen on, but when she tried it on she realized that it was the one for her. The dress was absolutely stunning with large, flowing floor-length sleeves and a triangular cutout along the bodice. Liv paired it with glittering platform Gucci sneakers, and she looked gorgeous!

When Adam first saw Liv in her lovely ensemble, he could not help but shed a few tears of joy. "I turned the corner and into his line of sight and he just put his hand up to cover his face, it was pretty adorable," Liv said. You're Having a Hard Time Placing Emily in Paris's Randy Because He's in Everything

After watching episode four of Emily in Paris, do you just have that nagging notion you've seen rich hotelier Randy Zimmer before? Emily courts him (and his incredible suit) at an art exhibition for Savoir, the French marketing company she works at, and presents a perfect elevator pitch for creating a signature scent. In between the champagne, Chanel bags, romance, and modern art, we were already feeling a bit woozy, but not exactly knowing where we had seen the actor that plays Randy – that was killing us. Eion Bailey is not just a total heartthrob, but has acted in roles we would have never guessed. And when we figured it out, well, we were shook.

So where have you seen Eion Bailey before?

Eion Bailey is an American actor who has been formally acting since 1997, starring in almost 50 different roles in TV shows and movies throughout his career. So, where in the world have you seen those deep blue eyes before? It may be hard to guess because he's seriously been everywhere.

Bailey started out with a role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, playing Kyle DuFours, a bully at Sunnydale High and one of the members of "The Pack." If that doesn't clear up your faint memory of his gorgeous face, then you could have possibly seen him in an array of places . . . as in probably the most diverse range of roles ever. Bailey's acting credits include Dawson's Creek, where he plays Billy Konrad, a New York music producer, in Almost Famous, where he can be found playing Jann Wenner, the founder of Rolling Stone magazine, Center Stage, the ballet drama where he plays Jim, AKA the cutest boyfriend in history to ballet dancer Maureen, and even in Fight Club (we're shook!) where he plays Ricky, one of the youngest members.

After realizing Bailey's breadth of work, it's easy to see why his face seemed so familiar after watching Emily convince Randy with her killer charm and wit (and yeah, outfits). Can't get enough of the tousled curls? You can find him in the upcoming miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand, a show about an apocalyptic world that's a far cry from croissants and wine.

"A shy person often will be happy and at peace during social gatherings, but will tend to prefer being in the background rather than being center stage," Dr. Manly explained.

Emin Gharibian, PsyD, founder and director of Verdugo Psychological Associates, agreed, noting that social anxiety stems from a fear of being rejected or humiliated.

Here's Why Most Candy Corn Isn't Vegan

Candy corn is one of the most controversial Halloween candies, as people usually either love it or hate it. No matter which group you're in, you might be wondering if the tricolored triangle-shaped treat is vegan-friendly. The short answer is no, candy corn is not suitable for a vegan diet.

The main reason candy corn isn't considered vegan is because of a few of the ingredients, but each brand uses different ingredients. Luckily, there are so few ingredients in candy corn that you should be able to tell if the brand you picked up uses any animal products just by looking at the label.

Even though the main ingredients in candy corn like sugar and corn syrup are vegan, some of the additional ingredients are not. Many of the top-selling candy corns include things like gelatin and confectioner's glaze, both of which are made with animal products like ligaments and insect excretions. Another major ingredient in candy corn is honey, which is not considered vegan, though some people include it in their vegan diet and others do not.

Even though there doesn't look to be any brands making vegan-friendly candy corn, there is an alternative. You can make your own candy corn with just a few ingredients that are all vegan-friendly! We love this recipe from tablespoon.com, which allows everyone to enjoy candy corn this Halloween.

Your Love of Coffee Could Be Behind Your Acid Reflux - Here’s Why

A day marked with a morning cup of coffee, followed by a lunchtime latte and an afternoon espresso sounds delicious. But, if you're also experiencing heartburn, your love of caffeine could also be responsible for your acid reflux.

"Caffeine is one of the biggest culprits [of heartburn], particularly high caffeine content coffee such as espressos," Dr. Otto Lin, MD, a Virginia Mason gastroenterologist, says.

So, how does that warm and comforting treat cause such discomfort?

"Caffeine relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, which allows stomach acid to reflux back up the esophagus," Dr. Lin explains. What's more, non-herbal teas, certain sodas, energy drinks, and dark chocolate with more than 75 percent cocoa, which all contain caffeine, are also potential triggers.

The good news is, you might not have to totally give up your pumpkin spice brew.

While it's important to get medical advice on your symptoms from your doctor, limiting the amount of caffeine you consume can help. "For patients with underlying acid reflux, we usually recommend not more than two cups of caffeinated coffee per day. Most acid reflux patients are able to tolerate small amounts of coffee without excessive symptoms," Dr. Lin says.

Another option is switching to decaffeinated coffee. If sweet speciality coffee beverages are your go-to, you should know that "high sugar drinks typically will worsen acid reflux, although the exact mechanism is not clear," Dr. Lin explains.

So, if you suspect refilling your coffee mug multiple times a day is to blame, consider cutting back, and also reaching out to your doctor for personalized guidance.

Ignoring Your Toothbrush and Floss Can Lead to Gingivitis and Even Worse Gum Issues

When I'm sitting in the dentist's chair listening to the hygienist list off what happens when you neglect your toothbrush and floss, I'm always a bit lost. The brushing and flossing part is crystal clear - things get foggy when she leaves me to decode the side effects, like gingivitis and periodontitis.

What she is trying to say when she mentions the oral-health jargon is that when you don't take care of your teeth and gums, they get sicker and sicker (like a domino effect!) - each stage of regressing health has its own name.

Terms like gingivitis and periodontitis are easily confused because one can lead to the other. Gingivitis is an initial inflammatory response of the gums to the presence of acidic plaque. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, Siri K. Ziese, DDS, and the owner of Ziese Family Dentistry, explains.

Let's start from the beginning so you can clearly see how the oral-health dominoes fall.

When bacteria in your mouth mixes with the food you're eating, Ziese says it produces an acidic slurry called plaque. If not brushed and flossed away, that plaque will mix with your saliva to create calculus - a hard coating on your teeth and gum line, also known as tartar.

Through the growth of plaque and calculus, your gums produce the inflammatory response known as gingivitis, which can present as red, tender, and bleeding gums, she adds.

"Periodontitis is the result of untreated gingivitis. The continued inflammatory response of the gums results in increased tissue inflammation, gum recession, bone recession, and eventually tooth mobility or tooth loss," Ziese says.

Let's circle back to your good ole toothbrush and floss. To prevent plaque buildup (and worse), Ziese recommends brushing your teeth for at least two minutes in the morning and two minutes in the evening, as well as thorough flossing daily.

"If it has been six months since your last professional cleaning or calculus is building up on your teeth, a visit to your hygienist is necessary," she says.

"Once your teeth are cleaned, it will typically take at least one month of excellent home care to reverse gingivitis."

If you are at the periodontitis stage, Ziese says that typically patients need a professional cleaning called scaling or root planing that occurs below the gums (which are often numbed first!) to remove calculus buildup.

In more severe cases, some periodontitis patients require surgical therapy or tooth removal, she adds.

In the case of dental hygiene, a little really does go a long way. Keeping up with brushing and flossing can save you from this domino of oral-health complications and having to understand the confusing names that go with them.

Half Baked Harvest

Notes

Tip: If your rice doesn’t come out in one piece, please don't stress, just scoop out the rice as is, and serve. It's going to be delicious no matter what.

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups basmati rice
    kosher salt
    3 tablespoons plain yogurt
    3 tablespoons salted butter
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup fresh mint or cilantro
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

Heat a large, high sided skillet over medium heat. Cook 2 minutes, until toasted, remove from the heat.
  7. Run a spatula along the edges of the pan to release the rice. Carefully flip the rice onto a platter. Serve topped with chickpeas, fresh cilantro, or mint.

Here's Why Most Candy Corn Isn't Vegan

Candy corn is one of the most controversial Halloween candies, as people usually either love it or hate it. No matter which group you're in, you might be wondering if the tri-colored triangle shaped treat is vegan-friendly.

Many of the top selling candy corns include things like gelatin and confectioner's glaze, both of which are made with animal products like ligaments and insect excretions.
