You Can, In Fact, Feed Your Cat Shrimp - But Only in Moderation, According to Vets

Cats are very unique (and cute) creatures that are known for being pretty particular. Maybe you have a cat whose favorite spot in the house is the bathtub or a cat who has an affinity for certain human foods, including cooked fish. When it comes to their diets, they are no different - cats know what they like and what they don't. And while cats and seafood may seem like a match made in (pet food) heaven, is all seafood safe for cats to eat? In particular, can we feed our furry friends shrimp? As it turns out, the answer is a bit complex. Because of this, POPSUGAR enlisted two experts to learn more.

Can cats eat shrimp?

According to Jessica Herman, DVM, and veterinarian at Fuzzy Pet Health, cats can eat shrimp but it should not be the main focus of their diet. "Although shrimp is full of protein and antioxidants, it inhibits vitamin K production, which can cause serious health issues like bleeding disorders," explained Dr. Herman. She also shared how fish-only diets have been linked to low thiamine (vitamin B1) levels, "Thiamine deficiency can cause severe neurologic abnormalities," said Dr. Herman.

If you do plan on giving your cat shrimp, it is important to pay attention to what kind you are giving them and how you are preparing it, if you are cooking it yourself. "If cooking shrimp for your feline friend, keep things bland," said Dr. Herman, "No seasonings or salt. [Also], remove the head, tail, and shell." Dr. Herman advised that although shrimp flavored cat foods are acceptable, you should never feed your cat raw shrimp. There is also always a possibility of a shrimp or seafood allergy, even in cats.

Are there any types of seafood they should stay away from?

Dr. Herman said that while there is no specific seafood that is particularly dangerous for cats, cats should not be put on a seafood-only diet because it can cause nutrient deficiencies, and you should also never feed them raw fish or fish with bones in it. "Fish flavored cat foods are good to feed because they are made nutritionally complete and balanced by the manufacturer," Dr. Herman said. It is also imperative to keep in mind that not all fish are created equal - the quality of the fish matters, even when feeding it to your cat. "Many fishes for consumption have been found to contain heavy metals and toxins," Dr. Herman added. Because of this, she instructed to avoid options such as tilefish and tuna as they may be the most contaminated.

Is there any seafood that is especially healthy for cats?

While you should pay attention to how much fish your cat is consuming, it is important to also know that fish oils are beneficial for our furry friends. "Studies suggest that fish oils can be super beneficial to your cat," explained Carly Fox, DVM, Staff Doctor at NYC's Animal Medical Center, "Fish oils are an excellent source of omega III fatty acids which have been shown to help ease joint pain, kidney disease, and cardiac disease in cats and dogs." Because of this, Dr. Fox recommended an oily fish, such as mackerel, to occasionally add to your cat's diet. Overall though, it is important that seafood is enjoyed in moderation by our little ones.

This Product You've Seen All Over TikTok Straight Up Eliminated My Need For Foundation

Truth be told, I don't remember where I first heard about the product that would overthrow my daily makeup routine. It may have been on a "best of" list, or talked about among friends, but eventually, I bought a jar of Dr. Jart's Cicapair Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment ($52). At $52, it was a modest investment in the future of my splotchy skin.

I have combination skin: overall dry, with perpetually large cheek pores and a nose that's prone to becoming oily halfway through the day. Due to a bout of mid-20s cystic acne, my face is uneven in both color and surface texture. (Gotta love acne, eh?) It's not perfect, but I'm OK with that.

What I don't love, however, is that I'm prone to redness. I'm a pale, freckled gal, and my skin's undertone could be compared to the color of Dorothy's ruby slippers. I used to dull the redness with a primer and a hefty dose of foundation, but the Correcting Treatment has eliminated my need for both - I now slather on a bit of the product, follow it up with a touch of powder, and I'm good to go. Here I am two minutes after putting it on (no foundation, no powder):

"But Maggie," you're thinking. "It's just green sunscreen, isn't it?"

No, dear reader, it isn't.

It's a chameleon product that starts as a mossy green, then transforms to fit your skin's shade. The Tiger Grass (an herb) covers inflammation, redness, and blemishes while helping to cure those issues. It's not just a Band-Aid; it's a recovery tool. Because it's naturally hydrating (and free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates), it's taken the place of my daily moisturizer, in addition to my sunscreen and foundation. My skin can breathe, because there's only one product coating it.

I've converted more than one friend to Cicapair, because there's nothing better than a product that actually works. No wonder it's been making the round on TikTok lately (oh wait, maybe that's where I first heard about it . . . )

A GOP Senator's Deliberate Mispronounciation of Kamala Harris's Name Is All Too Familiar For POC Like Me

On Oct. 16, at a Trump rally in Georgia, Sen. David Perdue purposely mispronounced and mocked Sen. Kamala Harris's name as he introduced the president. "Ka-MAL-a, Ka-MAL-a or Kamala, Kamala, Ka-mala, -mala, -mala, I don't know, whatever," he said, eliciting laughter from the crowd. The Republican senator's intentional mispronunciation of Harris's name, which is straight from Trump's own playbook, is not only extremely rude, but also simply racist.

For people of color and immigrants with ethnic-sounding names, this infuriating incident is all too familiar. Perdue's attempt at "othering" and poking fun at Harris - who is Indian and Black - for her Hindu name is offensive. Knowing she has been his colleague in the Senate for almost four years shows that it was also deliberate. A clip of Perdue's comment sparked an important conversation on Twitter and the hashtag #MyNameIs started trending, inspiring POC to express pride for the meanings behind their own names and share similar painful stories.

My name is Yerin. It's pronounced Yeh-rin - like Erin with a "Y" as I tell people - and it was chosen by my late grandfather. In Korean, "Ye" means polite and respectful, while "Rin" is defined as bright, in both senses of the word. While I now feel so lucky to have a beautiful name that holds such meaning, I admittedly struggled for years to take pride in both my Korean heritage and ethnically Korean name.

I vividly remember crying to my dad after countless first days of school, distressed by teachers who had mispronounced my name, though not purposely, but who were more upsettingly unbothered to learn how to properly do so. As a kid, I vowed to give my future children explicitly white-sounding names, so they wouldn't have to deal with yet another barrier to be seen as an American. I even went as far as brainstorming white-sounding names that I could adopt once I went to college, a common practice for many POC and immigrants in an effort to assimilate into America.

I'm acutely aware of the visible discomfort people might feel when faced with pronouncing my name or the assumptions they might make about my identity.

Luckily, my dad discouraged me from doing such a thing, and as an adult, I've grown to become proud of my Korean heritage, and proud to identify as both Korean and American. But even so, I'm acutely aware of the visible discomfort people might feel when faced with pronouncing my name or the assumptions they might make about my identity. While some might view these thoughts as an overreaction, there's in fact research that demonstrates the impact of an ethnic-sounding name. According to a 2017 study from Harvard Business School, Black and Asian applicants who "whitened" their résumés to remove any references to their race had better success scoring interviews.

Because of these common occurrences and people like Perdue, I still sometimes find myself feeling embarrassed or troublesome whenever I'm waiting to be called on at the doctor's office, interviewing for a job, and even meeting new people in social settings. I often have to be reminded that I'm not responsible for others' inherent racism. What made Perdue's comment worse was that, when met with criticism, a spokeswoman for his campaign, Casey Black, explained that the senator "simply mispronounced Senator Harris' name, and he didn't mean anything by it." This gaslighting, which suggests that POC are the ones at fault for being insulted, is also a frequent experience we are all too familiar with.

I refuse to allow my name to be associated with such negativity and discomfort, and refuse to let people like Perdue take away my identity. Harris certainly deserves the respect of having her name pronounced correctly, and so do I. Our names are our identities, and no one can diminish them.

This Like Water For Chocolate-Inspired Wedding Shoot Is a Beautiful Ode to Mexican Culture

Like Water For Chocolate (Como Agua Para Chocolate) is a highly acclaimed Mexican film that was made in 1992 and is based on a book of the same name by Laura Esquivel. At its core, it is a love story between Pedro and Tita that fits under the magical-realism genre. This styled wedding pays homage to Mexican culture and is filled with beautiful details from the book and movie. For instance, the rose petals and quote at the Sweetheart Table, the mortar and pestle, and the matches.

Though this shoot was captured by photographer Jennifer DeFilippis, it is an amalgamation of the efforts of numerous vendors and small businesses. The shoot took place at Covington Farm in Dade City, FL, which provided Jennifer with a scenic and rustic backdrop that is similar to the film's setting. "With acres and acres sitting right on the water, this venue has almost too much to offer for the perfect wedding day!" Jennifer said.

Mad Oddities planned the spectacular event, and they went all out. Every tiny detail was well thought through, such as the cute, colorful cake that perfectly matched the bride's dress. Additionally, all the centerpieces were food because Tita conveys her emotion through her cooking. The shoot also included multiple models in different looks, cute animals, and a live mariachi band! Overall, the wedding is an ode to the cinematic classic and filled with hidden gems. Keep reading to see these spectacular photos.

When I'm Feeling Overwhelmed With Anxiety, I Remember These 3 Words From My Therapist

Each therapy session, I secretly hope my therapist will share some new insight that will totally change my mindset and cure my anxiety, because after struggling with it for years, I'm exhausted. In reality, I know therapy is a process, and there's no magical cure for anxiety - but there is one thing my therapist said that almost seemed to vanquish it entirely: "Feelings aren't facts."

Now, when I'm approaching the black hole that is my anxiety, I try to remind myself that my worries are often not based in truth.

I come to our bimonthly sessions with a slew of concerns. I'm worried one of my loved ones is annoyed with me. I'm worried I'm not doing enough. I'm worried I'm not qualified enough for a job I want. Anxiety is like a black hole that pulls us in deep as it tears us apart - and climbing out of it can feel impossible. Every thought seems real, serious, and grave.

So, while my therapist's reminder that feelings aren't facts doesn't seem all that monumental or shocking now, it served as a beacon for me. It helped me realize that just because I worry something is true doesn't mean it is; my worries could very well just be the voice of my mental illness trying to cast doubt. Now, when I'm approaching the black hole that is my anxiety, I try to remind myself that my worries are often not based in truth.

As tempting as it can be to try to ignore these anxieties completely, I've learned that we have to embrace what we're feeling. Emotions serve a purpose, and that's to tell us something. When we experience intrusive thoughts, we may be tempted to judge them or run from them, but this can cause us to ruminate on them even longer. Instead, my therapist has taught me to be curious about where the thought is coming from, to accept it, and to let it pass without judgement. This response is actually a part of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

If you're also struggling with difficult emotions or anxieties, I encourage you to remind yourself that feelings aren't facts, that you're not alone, and that you shouldn't judge yourself for feeling what you do. (I also encourage you to see a therapist if possible - there are tips for finding one here.) Yes, anxiety can feel like a powerful black hole sucking you deep inside of it. I still struggle with it daily. But changing our mindset can make it feel more manageable.

Yes, Tom Hayden of The Chicago 7 Was Married to Jane Fonda

The Trial of the Chicago 7 includes the story of activist Tom Hayden, who was famously married to Jane Fonda. Although their relationship doesn't appear in the movie, since it didn't start until a few years after the Chicago 7 trial, it was a huge part of their public life in the decades following.

Both Hayden and Fonda were serious activists, which is how they eventually met and fell in love. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they first crossed paths in 1971, after Fonda joined the activist world that Hayden had already been working in for several years. In 1972, Fonda gave a memorable antiwar speech at a Vietnam War protest, and they began dating soon after that.

Hayden and Fonda married in January 1973, and they had been dating for some time before that, although Fonda's divorce from her first husband, French director Roger Vadim, was technically only finalized three days before her wedding to Hayden. A spokesperson for the couple told the Gadsden Times that the couple wanted to have a child and thought it would be better to be married "rather than hassle with criticism that would drain our energies from our real work." Their son, Troy Garity (given Fonda's mother's maiden name to avoid the stigma of his controversial parents), was born in July of that year; Fonda already had a four-year-old daughter, Vanessa, from her marriage to Vadim.

After nearly 17 years of marriage, the couple announced their decision to divorce in late 1989 - but with something of a twist on the usual "amicable breakup" that we're so used to from Hollywood couples. The Los Angeles Times reported at the time that Hayden and Fonda were actually sticking together professionally, despite their personal split, reportedly over Hayden falling for someone else. They continued to work together at the liberal grassroots organization Campaign California and announced plans to team up on an environmental proposition set to be on the ballot the following year.

Both remarried eventually: Fonda to CNN founder Ted Turner in 1991 (they divorced in 2001) and Hayden to Barbara Williams, to whom he remained married until his death in 2016. Two years later, Fonda reminisced about Hayden in a New Yorker interview. "He had this depth of knowledge, and he gave me structure and guidance, and I learned so much from him that I am forever grateful for. I miss him so much."

A TikTok User Made a Harry Styles x Britney Spears Song Mashup and It's a Freakin' Bop

Sometimes you just want to listen to a bunch of nostalgic 2000s hits, and other times you want to revel in the beauty of Harry Styles's masterpiece Fine Line for the 50th time. In either case, YouTuber Adam Wright's (aka Adamusic) song mashup of Britney Spears's ". . . Baby One More Time" and Styles's "Adore You," uploaded on Sept. 24, is here to satisfy your musical cravings.

Somewhere between the lines "strawberry lipstick state of mind" and "I must confess I still believe," the mashup perfectly blends together the heartache and romance of "Adore You" and the upbeat dance rhythm of Spears's ". . . Baby One More Time." As someone who loves both of these songs individually, I have to say I've never wanted a Britney Spears x Harry Styles collab more than I do now. Listen to the full mashup here, and check out Harry Styles's best music videos if you're in the mood to keep the "Adore You" party going afterward.

Check Out the Terrifyingly-Good Soundtrack of Lovecraft Country's First Season

What's an HBO show without its expertly put together soundtrack? Misha Green's book to TV adaptation of Lovecraft Country may be a sci-fi horror series with all sorts of ghoulish monsters lurking in every scene, but that doesn't mean it can't also have some of our favorite tunes bumping in the background! The show takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, which heavily influences the mix of old-school and modern music that makes up the soundtrack.

Few shows can feature songs from both Tierra Whack and Etta James in the same episode and have it make perfect sense, but Lovecraft Country makes it work. While we await news on whether the show will be bringing us a second season full of old-school jams and modern hits, check out the music featured on the show ahead!

Your Dentist Probably Doesn’t Approve of Your Ice Chewing Habit

Every morning before I sit down to work, I fill up a large mason jar with ice water. And after I finish the liquid (and give myself a pat on the back), I go to town chomping on the ice. I realize that the sound of ice on teeth might make some cringe, but it's never bothered me - I've always figured that I'm just consuming more water.

Much to my surprise, though, my dentist probably wouldn't be too thrilled about my ice chewing habit.

"When I'm asked to name a food that has a high potential to cause trouble, I call out chewing ice as an issue," Dr. Matt Messina, DDS, an ADA spokesperson, says. "Ice is a crystal and tooth enamel is a crystal. When you push two crystals against each other, one will break."

The somewhat good news is that Dr. Messina says that most of the time, the thing that breaks is the ice - however, sometimes it can be a tooth or a filling. "And that's a self-inflicted injury," Dr. Messina adds.

Along with unpopped popcorn kernels, Dr. Messina says ice is the most common culprit for broken teeth. "However, most of the time, a broken tooth or filling was in the process of failing and whatever you were eating was just the last straw." Basically, you're taking a risk.

Not going to lie - for me, that pile of ice on the bottom of my mason jar isn't so appetizing anymore. Looks like I'll be letting it melt, or leaving it out entirely, from now on.

Here's Why Fiber Is an Important Part of the Keto Diet

If you've recently started eating keto, you're probably learning about all the foods you should avoid - but are you considering the important nutrients you're eliminating with those foods, too?

"A ketogenic diet can help with weight loss, which can improve other diseases, however it can affect gut health and digestion in a negative fashion if certain precautions are not made," Jan Pawel Kaminski, MD, who specializes in colon and rectal surgery, says.

"The precautions include making sure to have a high-fiber diet with keto-friendly vegetables that are packed with fiber and nutrients, or consider fiber supplementation such as psyllium husk and probiotics that may help to replenish the gut."

The keto diet is traditionally a high-fat, adequate-protein, and low-carb eating plan. If you strictly adhere to this lifestyle choice, Dr. Kaminski says you could be restricting certain foods containing a lot of fiber, like whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

He adds that fiber helps to move waste through the colon and out of the body quicker, which can prevent inflammation and potential carcinogenic effects. Plus, the easier it is for you to do your business, the less strain you're putting on your body, thus preventing digestive disorders.

"Taking enough fiber has been shown to prevent constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and diverticulitis," Dr. Kaminski explains.

"It also has the added benefit of decreasing the risk of developing coronary artery disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and other gastrointestinal diseases such as colorectal cancer."

For the record, Dr. Kaminski doesn't claim that eating keto is all bad - he points out that the diet can successfully promote weight loss (at least in the short-term!). He just recommends that you talk to your doctor to make sure it's the right plan for you - and if it is, that you prioritize eating gut-friendly keto foods like green-colored vegetables.

"Spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and asparagus have high fiber and are packed with nutrients. Avocados pack a punch as they include several vitamins and minerals that are important to be taken, especially during a ketogenic diet, and they are packed with fiber, which may help to decrease bad cholesterol," Dr. Kaminski says.

"Also, cruciferous vegetables such as kale, cabbage, and cauliflower are very gut-friendly, as they help regulate the contents of the GI tract. Plus, they have been linked to decreased cancer and heart disease risk."

On the other hand, Dr. Kaminski mentions that red meat like beef, lamb, and goat can constipate, decrease the movement of GI tract contents, put you at a higher risk for colorectal cancer and affect digestive health in general. The consumption of these foods should be monitored throughout your diet.

All these reasons prove how important it is to consult with your doctor before starting a new eating plan. And if you have a history of chronic kidney disease, certain diabetes, and preexisting liver and pancreatic diseases, Dr. Kaminski urges against the keto diet altogether.
