You Should Care About Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Among Us Stream, Even If You're Not a Gamer

My husband is a gamer, I'm not. But on Tuesday night, we gathered around his laptop with a united interest: to watch Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar play Among Us. The congresswomen ventured where very few politicians have publicly gone before - to Twitch, a streaming site most often used for video games.

The idea started with a tweet. On Oct. 19, Ocasio-Cortez wrote, "Anyone want to play Among Us with me on Twitch to get out the vote? (I've never played but it looks like a lot of fun)." Her replies were almost instantly flooded with messages from some of the top players in the industry, resulting in a plan to play with a group comprised of herself and Omar, plus Pokimane, Hasanbi, Dr. Lupo, and more.

If you're unfamiliar, Among Us is a hugely-popular strategical deducation computer game, where players are assigned a role: imposter or crewmate. Imposters are embedded in a group of crewmates with the goal of elminating them one by one - without getting caught. The players can come together to discuss who they think is safe and who's a threat. Guess correctly, and you can win. Guess wrong, and you put your whole crew at risk to lose.

Ocasio-Cortez was playing a much deeper, more important game than what we saw onscreen. She brought in over 430,000 concurrent views on her own, and her efforts were magnified by the team of streamers she worked with, resulting in a reported 700,000 concurrent views. Her Twitch video alone has gained over 5 million views in less than 24 hours. For reference, that's approximately the same amount of people who watched The Bachelorette season premiere last week - and Ocasio-Cortez wasn't on cable TV.

The New York representative is often lauded as being more in-touch with young Americans than longtime politicians, and moves like this certainly help underline that point. She met a massive, captive audience where their interests are. She gave them essential resources to help create a voting plan and directed them to IWillVote.com. She spoke their language, and quite possibly, made the prospect of casting a ballot a little less intimidating. That's a long-game strategy that's more clever, more empowering, and more necessary than any sh*t an imposter could pull.

Voter turnout is an issue every American should care about. Ocasio-Cortez's step into the gaming world is a reminder that there is so much potential out there for reducing fear and sowing helpful information, even as suppression runs rampant. If she can find this unpaved territory, I certainly feel more emboldened and motivated to step outside my comfort zone - and the next time Ocasio-Cortez starts a Twitch stream, you can guarantee this non-gamer will be tuning in.

Forget Tessa and Hardin - Let's Focus on Inanna Sarkis and Matthew Noszka's Cute Romance

Inanna Sarkis plays resident mean girl Molly in the After and After We Collided films, and while her love life may be complicated in the movies, it seems to be a different story offscreen. The 27-year-old actress and YouTube star has been dating fellow actor and model Matthew Noszka since 2017, and in September 2020, they became parents to a beautiful baby girl named Nova. In a video for their shared YouTube blog posted on Aug. 1, the couple opened up about their relationship, with Matthew saying that they're a "really good balance" with a "great sense of chemistry and humor." And that chemistry certainly shines through in all of their photos together. See some of Inanna and Matthew's cutest moments ahead, and don't forget to catch After We Collided when it premieres on Oct. 23.

Buffy, Beetlejuice, and Wine: Sarah Michelle Gellar's Halloween Plans Sound Spooktacular

If you've ever wondered what it's like to kick back with Buffy the vampire slayer on a crisp October night (possibly in a cemetery with vampires lurking nearby), allow Sarah Michelle Gellar, aka Buffy herself, to share her Halloween plans ahead of the holiday. In an interview with POPSUGAR, Sarah said she and her family are looking forward to making the most of the holiday with dark chocolate, red wine, and plenty of spooky at-home surprises. "It's magical. [Halloween is] something you look forward to," she said. "And this year, it's obviously going to be extremely different, but it doesn't mean it doesn't have to be fun and exciting . . . I mean, Halloween is made for me. Costumes, wine, chocolate. I'm in."

As far as costumes go, Sarah has a few "tricks and surprises" up her sleeve. She shared part of her costume-making process on her Insta Stories the other day, which involved hot-gluing fake insects onto her outfit. "I love Halloween," Sarah said. "I think any actor, I mean, that's what we do, right? We put costumes on, and we pretend to be other people, and it's sort of that excuse to go even crazier. And for us in our family, it's always a big night. And I think that as a country, it's a really hard time, and we have to be flexible and make the best. And we can make new traditions."

"Once the kids get the candy, they have to hide it from daddy, otherwise daddy will eat the candy."

Typically, those traditions include scavenger hunts and plenty of candy for 11-year-old Charlotte Grace and 8-year-old Rocky James. "Once the kids get the candy, they have to hide it from Daddy, otherwise Daddy will eat the candy," Sarah said. This year, Sarah and her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. also plan to host an outdoor Halloween movie showing just for the kids. The movie lineup hasn't been settled just yet, but Sarah adds that her whole family loves Beetlejuice, and her kids recently became invested in her work as a former vampire slayer. "I think that they would genuinely love the show and love the storyline, whether it was me or not," she said.

In line with the Halloween spirit, Sarah has also collaborated with Apothic Wines to narrate "An Evening of Intrigue," a creepy online experience that lets you choose what happens when you find yourself at a supernatural Halloween party. Sarah's voice acts as a guide through the haunted house, cemetery, and creeptastic maze before you're paired with a bottle of Apothic wine based on your choices. So, it's basically what would happen if Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a choose-your-own-adventure game. Cheers to a spooky Halloween!

Dogs Don't Care If You Have a Favorite, Proving Once Again That We Don't Deserve Them

My family has two dogs - one big black labrador and a beagle puppy. "The boys," as we call them, have very different personalities, but share one thing in common: the lab and the beagle both think they are small dogs. Our big boy believing in every ounce of his fur he is a small pup leads to some frustration on my part. He's harder to control on the leash, and jumps up on people - he's sweet and well-meaning (if not the best trained dog ever - oops), but his front legs can reach my shoulders! I'll admit the smaller, easier-to-manage beagle has simply become my favorite dog because, well, he's easier to manage. And now, I worry the lab is secretly plotting against our family in revenge because he has noticed I kinda adore his little brother, but sometimes feel challenged by him. But it turns out I shouldn't be worried that the lab is petty like a human being might be.

Can dogs tell if you have a favorite?

"A pet's love is unconditional, where humans have a lot of conditions," Jennifer Frione, DVM, veterinarian and owner of Lakeside Animal Hospital in South Florida, told POPSUGAR. She adds, "That is why a dog has no clue you love taking car rides with their fur-sibling over them." Dr. Frione also reassures pet parents it's normal to favor one dog over another. "Just like human moms with their human kids, having a favorite can be natural when having multiple animals." But she is also quick to say, "This doesn't mean one pet has more value than the other."

Meanwhile, a dog isn't likely to seek out revenge against a pet parent for having a favorite - like peeing all over the house and then acting all innocent about the destruction (just my personal nightmare?). As Dr. Frione explains, "Dogs start to show behavioral issues not from being preferred over the other but because of boredom, stress, and anxiety." She elaborates, "These symptoms can come from being away from home more, less walks, less contact with their favorite human, or illness."

How can I be sure I'm treating my dogs equally?

Colleen Demling-Riley, dog behaviorist for Dogtopia, offers a few tips for maintaining a peaceful pet home. "The dogs in the house should have one set of rules that they all follow," she tells POPSUGAR. For instance, if one dog is allowed in the bed, all of them should be. But even if you end up giving an extra treat to one of your pups one day, Demling-Riley notes it is unlikely another dog will feel jealous like a human child might. "They don't take it personally, plot to get even, or fret over how unfair life is," she says.

Phew! At least I haven't offended my labrador or driven him to maliciously scheme against me. But I'll be sure to pet him as often as his (sorry) slightly more cuddly, less overbearing brother. It's only fair, and besides - I am deeply touched by the notion of how selfless and loving dogs are. If only we could all be like them!

This Trainer's Abs and Arms Pumpkin Pull-Up Challenge Is Scary-Good - Are You Up For It?

We're never one to turn down a Halloween-themed workout, especially one that involves pumpkins in some way, shape, or form. But even we've never heard of this next fitness challenge before: pumpkin pull-ups.

We know, we know - pull-ups are hard enough as it is without throwing a giant gourd into the mix. But if you're Angela Gargano, the AFAA-certified personal trainer and three-time athlete on American Ninja Warrior who bills herself as the "Pull-Up Expert" on Instagram, adding a little extra weight to this advanced move is no big deal. Gargano shared the challenge on her Instagram, demonstrating not only pull-ups but also hanging knee raises with the pumpkin squeezed between her toes. We definitely recommend practicing these moves regularly first before adding the extra weight; here are some exercises to help you master pull-ups before you hop on the bar. But whether you're going pumpkin-style or not, this is a fun workout combo we'll be taking into the fall and beyond.

This Product You've Seen All Over TikTok Straight Up Eliminated My Need For Foundation

Truth be told, I don't remember where I first heard about the product that would overthrow my daily makeup routine. It may have been on a "best of" list, or talked about among friends, but eventually, I bought a jar of Dr. Jart's Cicapair Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment ($52). At $52, it was a modest investment in the future of my splotchy skin.

I have combination skin: overall dry, with perpetually large cheek pores and a nose that's prone to becoming oily halfway through the day. Due to a bout of mid-20s cystic acne, my face is uneven in both color and surface texture. (Gotta love acne, eh?) It's not perfect, but I'm OK with that.

What I don't love, however, is that I'm prone to redness. I'm a pale, freckled gal, and my skin's undertone could be compared to the color of Dorothy's ruby slippers. I used to dull the redness with a primer and a hefty dose of foundation, but the Correcting Treatment has eliminated my need for both - I now slather on a bit of the product, follow it up with a touch of powder, and I'm good to go. Here I am two minutes after putting it on (no foundation, no powder):

"But Maggie," you're thinking. "It's just green sunscreen, isn't it?"

No, dear reader, it isn't.

It's a chameleon product that starts as a mossy green, then transforms to fit your skin's shade. The Tiger Grass (an herb) covers inflammation, redness, and blemishes while helping to cure those issues. It's not just a Band-Aid; it's a recovery tool. Because it's naturally hydrating (and free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates), it's taken the place of my daily moisturizer, in addition to my sunscreen and foundation. My skin can breathe, because there's only one product coating it.

I've converted more than one friend to Cicapair, because there's nothing better than a product that actually works. No wonder it's been making the round on TikTok lately (oh wait, maybe that's where I first heard about it . . . )

Why Eboni K. Williams Joining The Real Housewives of New York Is a Huge Deal For Bravo

American attorney and television host Eboni K. Williams will be joining the cast of The Real Housewives of New York for season 13 in 2021, making her the show's first Black cast member. Williams follows in the stilettoed footsteps of several other Black women in a long line of trailblazers who have diversified a Bravo series, including those of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Garcelle Beauvais. It's not Williams's mere entrance to the Real Housewives franchise that should earn buzz, but the significance of seeing a Black face on the notoriously white New York spinoff.

For the majority of the early 2000s, the Real Housewives franchise centered around predominately white women from affluent communities. Watch The Real Housewives of Orange County and witness a sea of thin, blonde women. Find a little more diversity in The Real Housewives of New Jersey, with a few more (white) cast members sporting black and brown hair.

As for Black representation, the Real Housewives franchise casts the majority of its Black stars down south. The Real Housewives of Atlanta was the only Real Housewives series to feature more than one Black cast member up until the release of the The Real Housewives of Potomac in 2016. Williams casting brings about an opportunity to highlight positive aspects of Black culture. It's especially important for Bravo to champion Black lives after firing several of its white reality stars for various racist tweets or racially motivated transgressions this past year.

"This franchise historically has not had a Black lens and now it will for the first time in 13 years," Williams told Essence. As an unmarried woman without children, she represents a new type of "housewife." Williams holds a law degree from Loyola University New Orleans, was a correspondent for CBS News, and currently hosts the program State of the Culture on Revolt TV. Seeing an example of an educated, Black woman juggling the intricacies of family life, friendships, and a high stress career goes against stereotypes often affiliated with Black women on reality television. Her casting paves the way for other women of color to join other Bravo shows as well.

To some, Williams serves as a role model and representation of Black excellence, affluence, and overall success. To others, she is a reminder of the importance of breaking cultural barriers in the entertainment industry. When young women across the country sit down to watch Real Housewives they won't just see a group of similar faces; they will see women from all backgrounds doing more than being mothers. Hopefully, Williams will become one of many Black women who is welcomed to the Real Housewives world with open arms. Like many of the women who came before her, Eboni K. Williams is much more than a housewife - she is a hero.

You Can, In Fact, Feed Your Cat Shrimp - But Only in Moderation, According to Vets

Cats are very unique (and cute) creatures that are known for being pretty particular. Maybe you have a cat whose favorite spot in the house is the bathtub or a cat who has an affinity for certain human foods, including cooked fish. When it comes to their diets, they are no different - cats know what they like and what they don't. And while cats and seafood may seem like a match made in (pet food) heaven, is all seafood safe for cats to eat? In particular, can we feed our furry friends shrimp? As it turns out, the answer is a bit complex. Because of this, POPSUGAR enlisted two experts to learn more.

Can cats eat shrimp?

According to Jessica Herman, DVM, and veterinarian at Fuzzy Pet Health, cats can eat shrimp but it should not be the main focus of their diet. "Although shrimp is full of protein and antioxidants, it inhibits vitamin K production, which can cause serious health issues like bleeding disorders," explained Dr. Herman. She also shared how fish-only diets have been linked to low thiamine (vitamin B1) levels, "Thiamine deficiency can cause severe neurologic abnormalities," said Dr. Herman.

If you do plan on giving your cat shrimp, it is important to pay attention to what kind you are giving them and how you are preparing it, if you are cooking it yourself. "If cooking shrimp for your feline friend, keep things bland," said Dr. Herman, "No seasonings or salt. [Also], remove the head, tail, and shell." Dr. Herman advised that although shrimp flavored cat foods are acceptable, you should never feed your cat raw shrimp. There is also always a possibility of a shrimp or seafood allergy, even in cats.

Are there any types of seafood they should stay away from?

Dr. Herman said that while there is no specific seafood that is particularly dangerous for cats, cats should not be put on a seafood-only diet because it can cause nutrient deficiencies, and you should also never feed them raw fish or fish with bones in it. "Fish flavored cat foods are good to feed because they are made nutritionally complete and balanced by the manufacturer," Dr. Herman said. It is also imperative to keep in mind that not all fish are created equal - the quality of the fish matters, even when feeding it to your cat. "Many fishes for consumption have been found to contain heavy metals and toxins," Dr. Herman added. Because of this, she instructed to avoid options such as tilefish and tuna as they may be the most contaminated.

Is there any seafood that is especially healthy for cats?

While you should pay attention to how much fish your cat is consuming, it is important to also know that fish oils are beneficial for our furry friends. "Studies suggest that fish oils can be super beneficial to your cat," explained Carly Fox, DVM, Staff Doctor at NYC's Animal Medical Center, "Fish oils are an excellent source of omega III fatty acids which have been shown to help ease joint pain, kidney disease, and cardiac disease in cats and dogs." Because of this, Dr. Fox recommended an oily fish, such as mackerel, to occasionally add to your cat's diet. Overall though, it is important that seafood is enjoyed in moderation by our little ones.
