The Real Story of Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda's Relationship

The Trial of the Chicago 7 includes the story of activist Tom Hayden, who was famously married to Jane Fonda. Although their relationship doesn't appear in the movie, since it didn't start until a few years after the Chicago 7 trial, it was a huge part of their public life in the decades following.

Both Hayden and Fonda were serious activists, which is how they eventually met and fell in love. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they first crossed paths in 1971, after Fonda joined the activist world that Hayden had already been working in for several years. In 1972, Fonda gave a memorable antiwar speech at a Vietnam War protest, and they began dating soon after that.

Hayden and Fonda married in January 1973, and they had been dating for some time before that, although Fonda's divorce from her first husband, French director Roger Vadim, was technically only finalized three days before her wedding to Hayden. A spokesperson for the couple told the Gadsden Times that the couple wanted to have a child and thought it would be better to be married "rather than hassle with criticism that would drain our energies from our real work." Their son, Troy Garity (given Fonda's mother's maiden name to avoid the stigma of his controversial parents), was born in July of that year; Fonda already had a 4-year-old daughter, Vanessa, from her marriage to Vadim.

After nearly 17 years of marriage, the couple announced their decision to divorce in late 1989 - but with something of a twist on the usual "amicable breakup" that we're so used to from Hollywood couples. The Los Angeles Times reported at the time that Hayden and Fonda were actually sticking together professionally, despite their personal split, reportedly over Hayden falling for someone else. They continued to work together at the liberal grassroots organization Campaign California, and announced plans to team up on an environmental proposition set to be on the ballot the following year.

Both remarried eventually: Fonda to CNN founder Ted Turner in 1991 (they divorced in 2001) and Hayden to Barbara Williams, to whom he remained married until his death in 2016. Two years later, Fonda reminisced about Hayden in a New Yorker interview. "He had this depth of knowledge, and he gave me structure and guidance, and I learned so much from him that I am forever grateful for. I miss him so much."

Virgin River: Everything You Need to Remember About How Season 1 Ends

Season two of Virgin River is coming in hot on Nov. 27, so you need to make sure you know what happens in this sleepy California town in season one. The show, which is based on the books by Robyn Carr, is a little bit Hallmark and a little bit Lifetime, with some Netflix magic sprinkled in. The first season has drama, romance, a kidnapping, and more. To refresh your memory on how we left our main characters at the end of season one, check out the gallery ahead and tune into Netflix in November to catch the next batch of episodes in this series.

The Final Season of Supernatural Will Be on Netflix Very Soon After Its Finale Airs

After fifteen seasons and countless monsters to face down, Supernatural is finally signing off with its final batch of episodes this year. The last seven episodes are airing through mid-November, after being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but when can fans catch the full season on Netflix? Good news: it won't be much longer to wait.

For a while, CW shows had a really convenient deal with Netflix that made it super easy for fans to get caught up if they missed the original broadcasts: all CW shows made their new seasons available on Netflix exacatly eight days after the season finale. But that's not the case anymore. The CW and Netflix changed their streaming deal in May 2019, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which basically means that shows debuting after then - so, any shows debuting in early 2019 or later - would not automatically have that "eight days after" streaming deal.

There's some good news for Supernatural fans, though! The previous deal between Netflix and The CW still applies to shows that were already streaming on the platform before that original contract ran out. Since Supernatural is one of those shows, the old rules should still apply! The series finale of Supernatural is scheduled as a two-hour special event on Nov. 19, so, going by the usual formula, that should mean that the entire final season will be available to start streaming on Netflix on Nov. 27.

Even the original airings of Supernatural's final season have already been delayed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With only a few episodes left to go, production shut down in the Spring when most of the film and television industry put everything on pause for several months. Filming was able to resume a few months ago, allowing the final seven episodes of the long-running drama to finally finish production and get on the schedule to anchor The CW's shortened, adjusted Fall season this year.

Cameron Diaz's Crunchy Fall Salad Calls For Avocado and a Drizzly Mustard Dressing

If you're like me, you probably have an ongoing mental list of celebrities whose tables you'd love to be seated at for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As far as lunch is concerned, Cameron Diaz might have just won me over with a "homegrown" version of her favorite salad from Jean-George's at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills. Unlike her Roasted-Corn-and-Pea Salad, the Green Fall Salad is made with kale, broccoli (aka "nature's broom"), avocado, Manchego cheese, homemade garlic croutons, and a champagne vinegar dressing. "This is what I love about it: the crunch of the croutons, the crunch of the broccoli, with the creaminess of the avocado . . . I love crunch," Cameron said.

To give extra dimension to the meal and turn it into a "weirdo salad," Cameron likes to add a pickled egg, which she easily makes by soaking boiled eggs in leftover pickle juice for a few days. Once it's all tossed together, the salad creates a flavorful combination of the vinegary dressing, creamy avocado, soft egg yolk, and fresh mint. So, yes, I've already added all of these ingredients to my shopping list. Check out Cameron's crunchy fall salad recipe ahead, and don't forget the (secret) first step: pour yourself a glass of wine!

Green Fall Salad With Homemade Croutons

Cameron Diaz

Ingredients

  1. For the Salad:
    Broccoli
    Avocado
    Pickled egg
    Kale
    Garlic
    Red Wine Vinegar
    Toasted bread
    Butter (or vegan substitute)
    Manchego (or your favorite) cheese
    Fresh mint
  1. For the Dressing:
    Grainy mustard
    Champagne vinegar
    Olive oil

Directions

  1. Chop up a clove of garlic and let it soak in a small bowl of red wine vinegar. Set aside.
  2. Strip the kale leaves from the stems and tear them into bite-sized pieces before placing them into your salad bowl.
  3. Tear a head of broccoli into small florets, about half an inch long, and place them in the bowl with the kale.
  4. Chop your pickled egg and avocado into small cubes and add them to your salad bowl.
  5. Toast up a slice of bread until crispy all over.
  6. Remove the crusts and cut the remainder of the toast into small, bite-sized cubes.
  7. Heat some butter (or vegan substitute of your choice) in a small saucepan to medium heat and add in your toast cubes.
  8. To the pan, add the garlic you soaked earlier (not the liquid) and a spoonful of the red wine vinegar itself.
  9. Cook the toast cubes until extra crispy, about five minutes.
  10. For the dressing, whisk together your grainy mustard, champagne vinegar, and a drizzle of olive oil. Add salt to taste.
  11. Top the salad with your homemade croutons, grated Manchego (or hard cheese of your choice), and some torn up mint leaves.
  12. Pour the dressing over your salad. Toss to coat, and enjoy!

The Reason Your Hiccups Are So Painful Is Surprisingly Simple

Hiccups are unquestionably annoying. They always seem to occur at the most inconvenient times, and when they do surface, you can hiccup four to 60 times per minute. Thankfully, they're usually short-lived and rarely serious. Hiccups are involuntary spasmodic contractions, primarily of the diaphragm and the muscles between the ribs, which are then followed by a closure of the glottis (or voice box), causing that hiccup sound, explained Eiman Nab, MD, a gastroenterologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Some of the most common triggers, according to the Mayo Clinic, include drinking carbonated beverages or too much alcohol, eating too much, getting overly excited or stressed, sudden changes in temperature, and swallowing air while chewing gum or sucking on candy. But why are hiccups so uncomfortable, and how can you lessen the pain? POPSUGAR asked the experts.

Why Do My Hiccups Hurt?

Hiccups can be disruptive - making it more difficult to eat, drink, sleep, or talk, for example - but they can also be frustratingly painful. "Sometimes they can cause pain because of the constant spasmodic contraction and the closing of the glottis," Dr. Nab said.

Hiccups can also bring a small amount of acid up from the stomach into your esophagus, which can result in discomfort, Sana Zekri, MD, a family medicine doctor who practices in the upstate New York region, told POPSUGAR. "When that acid comes up into the esophagus, this can cause a burning sensation, and can also cause us to burp."

How Can I Ease the Pain of My Hiccups?

The pain associated with hiccups shouldn't last long and will get better when the hiccups stop, Dr. Zekri explained. In the meantime, "if the pain is because of reflux, taking an antacid like calcium carbonate can make the discomfort better."

You can also try several techniques for lessening or resolving your hiccups, Dr. Nab said. These include holding your breath, biting on a lemon, sipping cold water quickly, or even gently rubbing your eyes. "The underlying role is to interrupt the vagal stimulation and relieve irritation of the diaphragm," she explained.

For more severe cases, in which hiccups last for more than 48 hours (known as persistent hiccups) or longer than a month (intractable hiccups), medication or surgery may be necessary. Dr. Nab noted that acupuncture and hypnosis have also shown promise for treating intractable hiccups.

When Should I See A Doctor For My Hiccups?

Hiccups typically aren't cause for concern, as long as they resolve within a couple days. However, if you do have a more severe and prolonged case of hiccups, you should contact your primary care physician, Stanley Pietrak, MD, a gastroenterologist at MedStar Montgomery, told POPSUGAR.

Dr. Peitrak explained that hiccups can have serious consequences, including malnutrition, weight loss, exhaustion, and dehydration. They can also be a sign of underlying disease. Some conditions that can cause persistent hiccups include nerve damage or irritation, disorders of the central nervous system, and metabolic disorders. They may also point to things like acid reflux, inflammation of the stomach, or ulcers in your upper gastrointestinal tract, Dr. Peitrak said. Your doctor can help you get to the bottom of it.

Lizzo Campaigns For Joe Biden in Moving Speech: "I Don't Wanna Go Back to the Way It Was"

During a visit to her hometown of Detroit on Oct. 23, Lizzo took a few minutes to speak to voters and share her support for Joe Biden ahead of the 2020 presidential election. "I don't have to tell you guys that this is the most important election of our lifetime," Lizzo said to a crowd of about 50 people involved with Focus: Hope, a non-profit organization seeking to provide education and training for underrepresented minority groups. "Michigan is going to be so crucial, and how Michigan votes is going to be so crucial between trying to make America great again or finally bringing America together."

Lizzo's two-minute speech was powerful and effective in rallying voters to canvas for the Democratic candidates. "Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will help us finally bring America together," she told attendees. The singer also stopped by Harper Woods, MI to speak to young voters about the importance of early voting and making a plan before you cast your ballot.

Lizzo, who has spent the last several months encouraging fans to vote, gave her speech just one day after Donald Trump and Joe Biden faced off in the final presidential debate ahead of the Nov. 3 election. See photos from the event and watch Lizzo's campaign video endorsing Joe and Kamala ahead.

HBO Max's The Witches Is More Like the Book Than the Classic '90s Film, but With a Twist

Whenever I watch a remake, I always take the chance to appreciate the film as its own movie, separate from the original. HBO Max's remake of Roald Dahl's The Witches is just different enough from the Anjelica Huston-led 1990 film to stand out, but the two bear the foundational similarities enough to both be considered classics in their own right. There are only two really big differences between the two that are worth noting: the 2020 remake is decidedly less frightening than its predecessor and it has a different ending than the first film. Instead, the Anne Hathaway version pulls from the book's original ending to tie its adventures up in a neat bow. Keep reading for what that ending is and all the other ways the remake differs from the original.

The Witches Look Different

It's safe to say that the witches in the 2020 remake aren't as horrifically terrifying as the 1990 witches. I'm not sure if it's just further evidence that creators of the '90s were really enthusiastic about traumatizing their audiences, but most people remember being shaken to their core when the Huston's coven of wicked women peeled off their masks to reveal their grotesque visages. In the 2020 version, the witches' faces mainly stay the same, though their mouths widen to Joker-esque lengths to reveal small sharp teeth. Hathaway manages to make it look incredibly creepy, but I would definitely rather run into the modern Grand High Witch than the earlier version. No contest!

The Story Takes Place in Alabama

Octavia Spencer's version of the wise and cunning Grandma hails from Alabama, not Norway. When she tells her grandson about her history with the witches, the Grand High Witch turns her best friend into a large chicken, and rather than appearing in a painting as she ages and dies, her friend simply lived on as a family chicken that laid delicious eggs. (And was probably eaten at some point, but the movie never goes that far into trauma territory.)

The Ending Is Completely Different

The 1990 version of the film ended with all the witch mice getting killed by the guests, even the Grand High Witch. Bruno and the boy are turned back into humans by the disgruntled ex-second-in-command of the Grand High Witch, and they live happily ever after! The 2020 remake takes a note from the book's ending instead, with a twist. Bruno, the boy, and Daisy (a human named Mary who was turned into a mouse by the witches four months before the events of the film) go home with Grandma and live the rest of their days as mice - which is only three times longer than the average mouse, so about nine years. At the end of the film, we see an older mouse, with the voice of the film's narrator Chris Rock, who has been working with his grandmother to recruit children and take down all the witches in the United States. And then they live happily ever after! Until they die, of course.

You Need to Watch Miley Cyrus and Kamala Harris's Interview About the Importance of Voting

Miley Cyrus was the latest star to chat with Sen. Kamala Harris about politics and the importance of voting in this year's presidential election. The 27-year-old singer - who recently teased her upcoming LP Plastic Hearts - interviewed the Democratic vice presidential nominee on her Instagram Live on Oct. 22 about how young people can make their voices heard come Nov. 3.

"I want young leaders to be at the table. Joe [Biden] wants young leaders to be at the table because the only way we're going to strengthen as a country is if every voice is heard and respected," Kamala explained. "The way that you use the power of your voice during elections is you got to vote. People will respond to and see who's voting and then respond to their issues. That's just the way it works, so people have to vote."

"The way that you use the power of your voice during elections is you got to vote."

When it came to discussing racial justice, Kamala made it a point to remind people that President Donald Trump has refused to say "Black Lives Matter" and declined to denounce white supremacists, while she and Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden are committed to reforming the criminal justice system and requiring police accountability, as well as providing justice in healthcare, justice in education, and economic justice for people of color.

The conversation ended on a lighter note with Miley asking Kamala what's currently on her playlist and how she gets pumped up before she goes out on stage for the vice presidential debates. Watch their full conversation above now.
