Why India Oxenberg Didn't Participate in The Vow: "I Just Wasn't Ready to Speak Out"

Image Source: YouTube user Entertainment Tonight

Similar to HBO's The Vow, Starz's latest docuseries, Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult, sheds light on the disturbing world of NXIVM and its founder Keith Raniere through the eyes of former member India Oxenberg. However, Oxenberg wasn't personally involved with The Vow, like she is with Seduced, and the reason for that is simply because she just wasn't ready to tell her story. The Vow first premiered on Aug. 23, whereas, Seduced just debuted it's first episode on Oct. 18.

"For a long time, I just wasn't ready to speak out. I needed to take care of myself and prioritize my own healing and recovery and I was kind of turned off by the media, to be honest," Oxenberg recently said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "I actually got introduced to the producers and directors on Seduced, and they explained to me that they had vision for a different type of documentary that was female-focused, created by a female team of filmmakers, and that it was going to go deep into corrosion and high-control groups."

Oxenberg fled NXIVM in June 2018 after Raniere was arrested on multiple charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. She is now engaged to chef Patrick D'Ignazio and is currently working on a book about her experiences with NXIVM.

Why The Queen's Gambit Probably Won't Have a Season 2

The Queen's Gambit is already shaping up to be one of Netflix's most intriguing series of the year, but there's a good chance it won't have a second season. The series, which hit the streaming service on Oct. 23, follows a young chess prodigy named Beth (Anya Taylor-Joy) as she sets out to become one of the greatest players in the world, all while battling childhood traumas and her addiction to pills and drinking. Though the storyline is certainly intriguing enough for more episodes, it's currently being billed as a miniseries.

Seeing that the show is based on Walter Tevis's 1983 novel of the same name, it makes sense that Netflix would choose to end the story where the novel ends. After all, the novel has developed a cult following over the years. Tevis had reportedly discussed writing a sequel to the book, but it never came to fruition, as he died in 1984.

While many miniseries have been extended due to popularity, showrunner Scott Frank seems to have an appreciation for short and sweet stories. His wildly popular Netflix series Godless also had one season, despite fans wanting more. That being said, Taylor-Joy is more than happy to reprise her role as Beth in another season. "It hasn't been talked about because I think the period is a time that we spend with Beth is such an intense period of growth," she told POPSUGAR. "You see the sapling become the tree, if that makes sense, and the tree can definitely grow but that period of growth is complete. I certainly wouldn't say no, it's just never really been spoken about before."

If the show were to get another season, she definitely hopes her character Beth finds peace. "I hope she continues to be happy with herself," she said. "I think we finally leave Beth feeling a semblance of contentment, which is something that she has been running towards this entire show believed truly that she wasn't going to attain it and that she wasn't worthy of it, so I hope that that part can continue." We guess we'll just have to accept The Queen's Gambit for the short masterpiece it is until Netflix says otherwise.

The Undoing: 3 Theories For Who Could Be Responsible For Elena's Death

The first episode of HBO's The Undoing only just premiered on Oct. 25, and we're already on the edge of our seats trying to figure out whodunnit. Starring Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, and Matilda De Angelis, the six-part miniseries - based on Jean Hanff Korelitz's 2014 novel, You Should Have Known - follows a successful New York-based therapist named Grace Fraser, who suddenly finds herself engulfed in an investigation following the death of a young mother at her son's school named Elena Alves.

In You Should Have Known, Grace's husband, Jonathan, ends up being the killer after he confesses to her in a letter; however, it's unclear if The Undoing plans to stick to the same storyline as the book, so we've put together a list of potential suspects for you to explore. Be sure to check back every week to see our updated theories.

HBO Max's The Witches Is More Like the Book Than the Classic '90s Film, but With a Twist

Whenever I watch a remake, I always take the chance to appreciate the film as its own movie, separate from the original. HBO Max's remake of Roald Dahl's The Witches is just different enough from the Anjelica Huston-led 1990 film to stand out, but the two bear the foundational similarities enough to both be considered classics in their own right. There are only two really big differences between the two that are worth noting: the 2020 remake is decidedly less frightening than its predecessor and it has a different ending than the first film. Instead, the Anne Hathaway version pulls from the book's original ending to tie its adventures up in a neat bow. Keep reading for what that ending is and all the other ways the remake differs from the original.

The Witches Look Different

It's safe to say that the witches in the 2020 remake aren't as horrifically terrifying as the 1990 witches. I'm not sure if it's just further evidence that creators of the '90s were really enthusiastic about traumatizing their audiences, but most people remember being shaken to their core when the Huston's coven of wicked women peeled off their masks to reveal their grotesque visages. In the 2020 version, the witches' faces mainly stay the same, though their mouths widen to Joker-esque lengths to reveal small sharp teeth. Hathaway manages to make it look incredibly creepy, but I would definitely rather run into the modern Grand High Witch than the earlier version. No contest!

The Story Takes Place in Alabama

Octavia Spencer's version of the wise and cunning Grandma hails from Alabama, not Norway. When she tells her grandson about her history with the witches, the Grand High Witch turns her best friend into a large chicken, and rather than appearing in a painting as she ages and dies, her friend simply lived on as a family chicken that laid delicious eggs. (And was probably eaten at some point, but the movie never goes that far into trauma territory.)

The Ending Is Completely Different

The 1990 version of the film ended with all the witch mice getting killed by the guests, even the Grand High Witch. Bruno and the boy are turned back into humans by the disgruntled ex-second-in-command of the Grand High Witch, and they live happily ever after! The 2020 remake takes a note from the book's ending instead, with a twist. Bruno, the boy, and Daisy (a human named Mary who was turned into a mouse by the witches four months before the events of the film) go home with Grandma and live the rest of their days as mice - which is only three times longer than the average mouse, so about nine years. At the end of the film, we see an older mouse, with the voice of the film's narrator Chris Rock, who has been working with his grandmother to recruit children and take down all the witches in the United States. And then they live happily ever after! Until they die, of course.

Adele Played a Bachelor Contestant on SNL, and Now We Really Want It to Happen in Real Life

On the Oct. 24 episode of Saturday Night Live, we got to see what it'd be like if Adele was on The Bachelor, which is something we didn't know we needed. You'd think she'd automatically be the frontrunner, but it seems even Adele struggles with certain issues when it comes to love - like bursting out into song at inappropriate times. Although she wasn't the musical guest, it certainly felt like it, as she sang through some of her most famous hits, including "Hello," "Someone Like You," and "Rolling in the Deep." Even when the other contestants and the Bachelor himself were annoyed, it was hard not to get excited by Adele's presence. She may not have found the love of her life, but apparently, she's appearing on Love Island soon (JK, but we wish she really was). You can catch a sneak preview of the video below.

SNL Somehow Found a Way to Make the Final Presidential Debate Even More Ridiculous

We didn't think they could do it, but somehow, Saturday Night Live found a way to top the ridiculousness of Thursday's final presidential debate. During the cold open of Oct. 24's episode, Maya Rudolph switched things up from her usual Kamala Harris impersonation, this time portraying moderator Kristen Welker to Alec Baldwin's Donald Trump and Jim Carrey's Joe Biden.

We're not sure which moment was the highlight of the skit, as Carrey, Rudolph, Baldwin, and even Kate McKinnon as Rudy Giuliani were all in top form. From Baldwin's Trump continuously calling Rudolph's Welker by the wrong name and occupation to Carrey's Biden having a full-on Clint Eastwood moment, we loved it all. Rudolph even hilariously threatened to use the mute button on her microphone, despite the fact that it wasn't connected to anything. Check out the skit ahead.

Unsolved Mysteries: The 4 Biggest Theories on What Happened to JoAnn Romain

The fifth episode of the second volume of Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries reboot dives deep into the disturbing death of 55-year-old JoAnn Romain. JoAnn disappeared in 2010 after her car was found outside of St. Paul Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. Authorities quickly jumped to the conclusion that JoAnn had died by suicide after she walked into a freezing lake nearby and drowned herself. However, her body was not recovered during the initial search.

Over two months later, JoAnn's body was discovered in the Detroit River, 35 miles from where she had disappeared. Her clothing, jewelry, and shoes were all still intact and her car keys were found inside her coat pocket, but her rosary and cell phone were both missing. She also had two bruises on her left arm, which could've been the result of an assault, as the purse found in her car was torn.

So, what happened to JoAnn? It's been a decade since her passing, but her case still remains unsolved. Ahead, read four theories about who could have been behind her death.

Theory 1: JoAnn Romain Died by Suicide

Police claim JoAnn's death was a suicide by drowning, but it's very unlikely that her body would have left the shallow water along the shore and traveled to the Detroit River because there was no current. Authorities also had divers searching the water for several days, and they never found any evidence indicating that JoAnn had drowned. Not to mention, JoAnn fueled her car prior to attending church, and as investigative reporter Scott Lewis put it: "Who fills their gas tank on their way to commit suicide?"

Theory 2: David Romain Killed His Ex-Wife, JoAnn

JoAnn's daughter, Michelle, listed her father, David, as a potential suspect. He and JoAnn were married for 25 years, but they separated shortly before her death because JoAnn got fed up with arguing all the time and wanted to live a "peaceful, happy life." According to Michelle, David was really angry that JoAnn left him, which could have been a possible motive for him to kill her.

Theory 3: Someone Connected to John Matouk Murdered JoAnn Romain

Michelle posited that her uncle, John - JoAnn's brother - might have had a role in JoAnn's death. Even though she doesn't believe he personally did anything to hurt his sister, John owed a lot of money to several people, so Michelle suggested that her mom's demise could have been revenge as JoAnn and John were close. John has maintained that he had nothing to do with JoAnn's death. However, he said it's possible that someone he knew could have murdered his sister.

Theory 4: Tim Matouk Murdered JoAnn Romain

Michelle's primary suspect is JoAnn's estranged cousin, Tim, who was a police officer at the time. Michelle accused Grosse Pointe Police of covering up for him after a witness claimed he saw JoAnn with Tim and another man by the lake on the night she disappeared.

"My mom had stated her extreme fear and concern for him before this occurred," Michelle told CBS News Detroit in 2018. "She also had indicated that she was reluctant to go to the local police because they were friends with this estranged family member that was a police officer, and they would not do anything to help her."

Grosse Pointe Police filed a motion for the lawsuit's dismissal, and in August 2019, a federal appeals court unanimously ruled in favor of the city and its police department.

Disney Junior's Adorable New Short For Preschoolers Teaches Little Kids About Voting

Mickey and his Disney Junior friends want to help teach your little ones about the voting process through song and adorable animation. As part of the network's "Ready for Preschool" series - which "is designed to encourage kids age 2-7 to develop positive attitudes about themselves and as a member of a community" - this new short, "Everybody Gets a Vote," specifically focuses on voting being a fair way to choose which game the group should play together. And though the concepts are generalized, the short helps kids to understand terms like "campaign" and "ballot."

"Our series reinforces lessons for preschoolers, through song," Lori Mozilo, executive director of original programming at Disney Junior, said in a press release. "With this new short, we share why, for the greater good, every vote matters."

Watch the short above before it premieres on Disney Junior on Nov. 1, and check out the rest of the "Ready for Preschool" series on Disney Junior's YouTube channel and on the DisneyNOW app.

Unsolved Mysteries: What We Know About Lester Eubanks's Whereabouts

Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries reboot returned for volume two on Oct. 19, and episode three sheds light on the case of Lester Eubanks, one of America's most wanted fugitives. In December 1973, the Ohio Department of Corrections took Eubanks - who was serving a life sentence for the 1965 murder and attempted rape of 14-year-old Mary Ellen Deener - and other inmates to a local mall to do some Christmas shopping as a reward for good behavior. Eubanks used the opportunity to escape and has been on the run since.

In September 1994, after police featured Eubanks's case on America's Most Wanted, authorities got a tip that he had been living in Los Angeles with his cousin's widow, Kay Banks. Detectives then paid Banks a visit, and she confessed that Eubanks had initially been living in Michigan before he eventually made his way to the Los Angeles area, where he went by the name Victor Young and worked in the city of Gardena. However, Eubanks ended up moving out a while later when Banks lied and told him that the FBI had called her asking about his whereabouts.

So, where is Eubanks now? Nobody knows. It's believed that Eubanks was in contact with his father, Mose, who lived in Mansfield, OH, during the summer of 2003, but authorities were never able to confirm that. He has friends and family across the United States, including in Michigan, Florida, Texas, Alabama, California, and Washington.

Eubanks was included in the 2018 US Marshals 15 Most Wanted List, and in November 2019, authorities seemed to have a break in the case when a man came forward claiming he believed his late mother had been raped by Eubanks, leading to his birth. The man, who chose to remain anonymous, provided his DNA in hopes of helping to bring Eubanks to justice. However, FBI policies prohibit the use of a relative's DNA in a search of the organization's DNA database, prompting legal hurdles for using the man's DNA to catch Eubanks. To this day, Eubanks's whereabouts are still unknown, and the US Marshals are offering a $25,000 reward for any information that leads to his arrest.

Virgin River: Everything You Need to Remember About How Season 1 Ends

Season two of Virgin River is coming in hot on Nov. 27, so you need to make sure you know what happens in this sleepy California town in season one. The show, which is based on the books by Robyn Carr, is a little bit Hallmark and a little bit Lifetime, with some Netflix magic sprinkled in. The first season has drama, romance, a kidnapping, and more. To refresh your memory on how we left our main characters at the end of season one, check out the gallery ahead and tune into Netflix in November to catch the next batch of episodes in this series.

The Final Season of Supernatural Will Be on Netflix Very Soon After Its Finale Airs

After fifteen seasons and countless monsters to face down, Supernatural is finally signing off with its final batch of episodes this year. The last seven episodes are airing through mid-November, after being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but when can fans catch the full season on Netflix? Good news: it won't be much longer to wait.

For a while, CW shows had a really convenient deal with Netflix that made it super easy for fans to get caught up if they missed the original broadcasts: all CW shows made their new seasons available on Netflix exacatly eight days after the season finale. But that's not the case anymore. The CW and Netflix changed their streaming deal in May 2019, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which basically means that shows debuting after then - so, any shows debuting in early 2019 or later - would not automatically have that "eight days after" streaming deal.

There's some good news for Supernatural fans, though! The previous deal between Netflix and The CW still applies to shows that were already streaming on the platform before that original contract ran out. Since Supernatural is one of those shows, the old rules should still apply! The series finale of Supernatural is scheduled as a two-hour special event on Nov. 19, so, going by the usual formula, that should mean that the entire final season will be available to start streaming on Netflix on Nov. 27.

Even the original airings of Supernatural's final season have already been delayed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With only a few episodes left to go, production shut down in the Spring when most of the film and television industry put everything on pause for several months. Filming was able to resume a few months ago, allowing the final seven episodes of the long-running drama to finally finish production and get on the schedule to anchor The CW's shortened, adjusted Fall season this year.

20 Years Later, The Little Vampire Is Still One of the Cutest Halloween Movies I've Seen

Back when Disney Channel's Monstober Halloween event was known as Hauntoberfest, I would stay up past my bedtime to watch red-eyed vampire cows enact their revenge on a rogue vampire hunter, and I loved every second of it. If you've never seen 2000's The Little Vampire, think of it as an unexpected mashup between Under Wraps and The Addams Family, with some bloodthirsty cattle thrown in for good measure. With nothing better to do than mix up a blood-red cocktail and soak up all the nostalgic Halloween content my brain can recall, I rewatched this movie for the first time since it came out 20 years ago, and it's a freakin' riot.

The movie follows Tony Thompson (Jonathan Lipnicki), a vampire-obsessed 9-year-old who just moved to Scotland with his parents and is having some trouble fitting in. After an IRL vampire child named Rudolph mistakes Tony for one of his own kind during a late-night fly around the Thompson residence, the two become best friends. Then, Tony joins Rudolph on his family's quest to retrieve a long lost magical amulet that can be used to turn vampires back into humans.

Without hesitation, Tony tightens the party store vampire cape around his neck and lets Rudolph expose him to the wonders of flying over rural Scotland and hanging out in overgrown cemeteries. Tony also does his part by leading Rudolph and his family to a barn full of cows to feed on, which, yes, results in a herd of vampire cows that can hang from the ceiling by their hooves. Tony finds all of this pretty flippin' cool, until Rookery, the vampire hunter, tries to trap him in a sarcophagus and stop the vampires from retrieving their amulet. From start to finish, this movie is a wild ride and made me laugh at surprising times, and it's definitely worth a watch. Just ask 2000 me, who dressed up like a vampire for Halloween three years in a row, or relive the movie vicariously through adult me by reading all the thoughts I had while rewatching it, ahead.

Pumpkin spice tacos, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin spice latte bread . . . there's truly no such thing as too many pumpkin-inspired recipes. And with fall in full swing, we aren't putting a cap on how many new pumpkin foods or drinks we'll be trying this season. Like this pumpkin caramel hard cider cocktail recipe from TikTok user Max (@letmaxkno), which looks freakin' piquant and is just what the doctor ordered.

The hard cider recipe above is easy to follow and won't steal much of your time, either. For a boozy kick, liquors like Kissed Caramel vodka and bourbon are added. The recipe features a homemade pumpkin spice syrup - a tutorial for that here - which can also be substituted with a quicker alternative from the grocery store. Glass rimmed with caramel syrup and cinnamon spice, you'll enjoy every sip with a hit of sugary sweetness.
