The Craft: Legacy's Lovie Simone Talks Modern Witchcraft, Finding Your Power, and a Tabby Spinoff
Playing in the same sandbox as such an iconic film as The Craft can be a tricky sport, but according to The Craft: Legacy's Lovie Simone, the sequel is able to stand on its own thanks to one element: time. "This Craft is definitely similar to the other in the sense that the outsiders are the weirdos and the girls are stepping into their power," she told POPSUGAR over the phone. "I think all of that is the same, but it's for the girls now. It's for what the weirdos look like now, what witches look like now, and how a coven would thrive in today's age against this generation's brand of hypermasculinity."
While Legacy does use the standard formula of its predecessor - three witches find their fourth in the new girl at school and take her under their wing as they explore their powers - its narrative is easily distinguished because of how much society has changed since 1996. It probably also helps that Zoe Lister-Jones helmed the sequel rather than an all-male creative team like the first. Nonetheless, The Craft is about a group of women fighting against the idea that they should be cowed and bestowed with magic that allows them a voice in a world that doesn't want to hear them speak. Legacy, on the other hand, focuses on a generation of women who have gotten messages of empowerment since they were born, and they're all the bolder, brasher, and more fabulous for it.
Unlike the coven of The Craft, Tabby (Simone), Lily (Cailee Spaeny), Lourdes (Zoey Luna), and Frankie (Gideon Adlon) already know they're important and that "your difference is your power." They're remarkably less angsty than the first film's foursome (most of the time), which sets the scene for a less ominous look at witchcraft and the sisterhood of a coven.
"[Legacy] reinforced what I knew witchcraft to be," Simone explained. "And I like how the film doesn't end with the girls against each other. You don't see that in the last film, considering how it ends. I like that we get a lot more time with the girls, see them bonding, and you get to see the life of the coven."
We never learn anything about the trio's lives other than a few throwaway lines about Tabby's Blackness and Lourdes being transgender.
It's the coven that gives Legacy the meat it needs to feel like its own thing rather than a gentler reboot of the first film. Though the film centers its focus on Spaeny's Lily, who is beautifully fragile before allowing herself to harness her power, it's inarguably the witches played by Simone, Luna, and Adlon that I would have liked to have seen more from. We never learn anything about the trio's lives other than a few throwaway lines about Tabby's Blackness and Lourdes being transgender. When I asked Simone what she would have loved to add to the film, the 21-year-old actress admitted that she would've wanted more insight into Tabby's family, specifically her mother, who taught her about her power. "She's the witch with the most experience because her family's into it, so I'd want to see what her mom's version of witchcraft looks like and what Tabby runs to her mom for," she revealed, which I would be into wholeheartedly. If The Powers That Be are reading this, that is more than enough material for a spinoff focusing on Tabby and her witchy ways!
While Legacy isn't Simone's first project, it does rank high on her list of favorites, being one of the few where she's been able to work with other women her age. The actress is best known for her roles on Greenleaf and as the lead of 2019's Selah and the Spades and is quickly gaining a reputation for bringing nuanced, complex characters to life. Given her previous work, she's developed a craft for being able to slip out of herself and react authentically as the character. "I feel like that's made me a better person overall because I get a little more perspective out of life now," she said. "I try to step out of myself to assess the situation in any situation on set and in real life."
"I'm trying to show people that it's cool to explore humanity, no matter how crazy it may look or seem, because humanity is crazy."
Simone doesn't prescribe to a set criterion when she seeks out her projects, though her work has had a common thread of following young women finding their power in difficult situations. For instance, the titular Selah in the Amazon Prime Video film is a senior at a boarding school where she leads a faction of students called the Spades who sell drugs to other students. As the head of the Spades, Selah is the queen of her land, and Simone portrays her confidence with ease, an empowered young woman who I have no doubt we could have seen in Tabby if the witch had had more time to grow. I asked Simone if she purposefully sought out roles where she would be able to portray an empowered young Black woman in a world where we so rarely see it depicted.
"Yes and no," she told me, adding that she understands how seeing her in roles like that impacts viewers and future narratives for Black women. "I do want people to see folks who look like me in powerful roles and what that looks like realistically, but I also know that people who look like me aren't often put in those roles, so I want to show that as well," she said. "I'm just really interested in storytelling. So whichever way it comes and if it feels right, and if everything is in order, then I'm there."
"I'm trying to show people that it's cool to explore humanity, no matter how crazy it may look or seem, because humanity is crazy. And there's a lot of gray areas," she went on earnestly. "That's why I loved working on The Craft. I've talked about being in a Christian family and growing up in a church, and it was amazing for me to explore the other side of the spectrum where it was all about women empowerment and witchcraft. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit on one end, and the Mother, the Maiden, the Chrone on the other." It's that versatility that promises this won't be the last we see of Simone's particular kind of magic.

Chris Hemsworth's Mini "Meditations" Are Both Soothing and Utterly Hilarious
Allow us to make your day by introducing Chris Hemsworth's latest gift to humanity: "Affirmations That Positively, Absolutely, Probably (Most Likely) Won't Make Your 2020 Worse." This mini-series of mini-meditations combines Chris Hemsworth's charming, soothing voice, his dry sense of humor, and the relatable problems so many of us have when we try meditation, especially with all the thoughts and distractions of the current moment.
Each "affirmation" is basically a hilarious, one-minute-long meditation, with lines like "Allow my soothing baritones to wash over you," titles like "Inhale possibility, not bugs," and settings that include the bottom of a pool, where Hemsworth is holding his breath through the meditation (so relaxing!) while his son cheerfully kicks across the screen. The affirmations are here to promote Hemsworth's health and fitness app, Centr, which has actual meditations on it. And even though we know these clips are a bit tongue-in-cheek, are we alone in thinking they're still pretty soothing? Or is that just a side-effect of looking at Chris Hemsworth and listening to his voice for five lovely minutes? Look, at this point in this year, we'll take it. Settle back and enjoy all five mini affirmations ahead.
4 Women Get Real About Numbness Post Mastectomy and Regaining Their Confidence
About one in six women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer choose to remove their breasts with a double (or bilateral) mastectomy, according to a study published by JAMA Surgery. Aside from having cancer, those at a high risk of the disease because of family history or due to BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutations can opt to get a preventative mastectomy, which reduces the likelihood of developing breast cancer by up to 90 percent and 95 percent respectively. Either way, numbness mainly in the chest area, and sometimes other parts of the body like the arms and shoulders, affects people who undergo mastectomies - and women we spoke to who had these surgeries said the topic isn't talked about nearly enough.
Numbness is one of the symptoms of what's called "post-mastectomy pain syndrome" caused by nerve damage, affecting 25 to 60 percent of mastectomy patients, according to The New York Times. Depending on the extent of the surgery, nerves can heal and regenerate overtime, but there are instances where women lose feeling for years. If surgeons don't try to actively keep or restore nerves during a mastectomy, you're going to have numbness - and that numbness ranges.
Shelley Hwang, MD, MPH, chief of breast surgery at Duke Cancer Institute, told POPSUGAR that the degree of numbness occurring post mastectomy has to do with a number of factors "including the extent of surgery, whether reconstruction was performed and what kind of reconstruction, incision placement, and whether the lymph nodes were removed." She explained that if the mastectomy is being done as part of cancer treatment, lymph nodes are often removed, which can cause numbness or nerve sensitivity in the area under the arms.
Anne Peled, MD, who is trained in both breast oncologic surgery and plastic surgery, emphasized that what kind of nerves are cut and how widespread your mastectomy is contributes to loss of sensation. She has adopted a nerve-grafting technique not yet widely used by surgeons called Resensation, which she does alongside her husband, plastic surgeon Ziv Peled. The technique is performed the same time as flap reconstruction surgery (using the body's own tissue for reconstruction as opposed to implants) and, as a term, has traditionally been used for flap reconstruction only. Because Dr. Peled has found a way to implement the nerve-grafting technique with implant reconstruction, she doesn't refer to the procedure as Resensation in her practice thus far and instead uses "sensation-preserving mastectomies."
While Dr. Peled performs a mastectomy, her husband works to preserve as much of the nerves as possible. Then, while Dr. Peled executes implant reconstruction, her husband uses nerve allografts to reconnect the nerves and provide sensation to the nipples and breast skin. The key is having, as she described it, a "thoughtful mastectomy technique," something that's especially important since many people do experience nerve pain post surgery.
Even just a year ago, Dr. Peled wasn't hearing from women about preserving sensation during mastectomies, but now she'll have a handful of potential patients reach out to her per day. Restoring sensation isn't typically a focus of breast reconstructive surgery, and she wants to change that, especially after being diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer herself in 2017. She opted for a lumpectomy (removal of a "lump" or part of the breast) with oncoplastic surgery, though she knew that many women at a similar stage in their diagnoses were undergoing full mastectomies and those surgeries happened without sensation preservation. "Now that our technology's evolved, now that our awareness of the importance of sensation has evolved, we have these different ways to try to optimize the sensation," she said. It's about giving women more options (especially since breast reconstruction has risen over the years).
When asked about Resensation, Duke Cancer Institute's Dr. Hwang said that she thinks it's an interesting new area of research "and an emerging procedure that is still only offered in a very small number of centers," adding that it is "probably too early to know whether consistent results can be obtained." However, Dr. Peled noted that 80 to 90 percent of her patients get their sensation back in the areas that lost that sensation (namely, in their chests). In a study published last July, 12 of her patients had a three-month followup post surgery with the doctor, and 87 percent of the breasts had preservation in NAC 2-point discrimination, which Dr. Peled said basically is a "woman's sensation to fine touch in their nipples." She and her husband now have data on over 150 breasts that is yet to be published.
How fast Dr. Peled's patients regain feeling depends on the nerve preservation itself. "If you're able to preserve and keep some of the nerves during surgery, it's faster, but when you're actually talking about reconnecting and reconstructing nerves, we really need to be talking about six months to a year and, in some cases, even a little longer," she explained. She also said that if chemotherapy and radiation is needed for someone who is having a mastectomy due to cancer, that can impact how long the nerves take to heal.
While it's essential that people undergoing mastectomies know about their options - and their potential to regain sensation - numbness still occurs. Four women POPSUGAR spoke with who underwent mastectomies (two of whom had nerve grafting done) all experienced, or still experience, some type of numbness. Keep reading for their stories as well as their tips for how to connect with confidence post surgery. It's a long journey, but understand that it's more than possible. It's absolutely probable.

Here Are 20 Couples Who Had to Work Together on Screen After Breaking Up
If you've ever shipped an onscreen couple, then you probably know the feeling of satisfaction that comes with watching your favorite characters fall in love off screen. The problem: the actors playing those characters don't always stay together. There are plenty of couples who've had to work together on screen after breaking up IRL, and we imagine that the experience is pretty awkward. Even if the actors don't share intimate scenes, filming a TV show or movie with an ex means lots of time spent together. Some A-list exes have been able to stay cordial. Others, not so much. Here are just a few celeb costars-turned-couples who had to keep working together after calling it quits.
This Dua Lipa Dance Workout Is Totally Energizing - and It’s Only 4 Minutes Long
YouTuber Kyra Provost, who goes by Kyra Pro and posts dance workouts to some of our favorite music, is back again with another quick, fun routine. This time, she is dancing and sweating her way through "Levitating" by Dua Lipa, featuring DaBaby.
Provost explains that she was inspired to dance to the catchy tune because Lipa recently released a new behind-the-scenes music video for the Madonna and Missy Elliott remix of "Levitating."
The video clocks in at just under four minutes, so it's the perfect upbeat midday break. With the uptempo pace and the jump-heavy choreography, you will definitely get your heart rate up. Provost does moves like squats, punches, and kicks in time with the beat of the song. Like Lipa's whole album, Future Nostalgia, the song and workout give us major '80s aerobics vibes.
Check out the full workout above, and don't be surprised when you find yourself pressing play on Lipa's other infectiously energetic songs. We know we did!
You can also try some of Provost's other dance workouts, like her boy band cardio session or her delightfully spooky Halloween medley.

Cardi B has no patience for racist trolls who misconstrue the influence of female Black rappers on the fashion industry. On Sunday, the "WAP" performer addressed social media commenters that are criticizing her Hermès Birkin collection and claiming the bags have "lost their value," making them less "exclusive."
In a nearly four-minute Instagram video, Cardi broke down the danger of this discriminatory thinking. Her point is underlined by one particularly powerful line: "Y'all don't do this to these white celebrities." She said, "I've been seeing this tweet right. It had me and it had other female rappers on it. They were talking about if we could get Birkins from the Hermès store and they [were] also saying how we depreciate the value of a Hermès Birkin bag. I find that really interesting because, first thing first, I definitely could get a bag. Actually, I got four bags today from the Hermès store."
"Another thing is that they're saying we're depreciating the value," she continued. "Actually, we add value because when we mention brands in hip-hop, sh*t go up." For example, she can argue that her track "Bodak Yellow" directly impacted Christian Louboutin's sales after she included a reference in the song. "When 'Bodak Yellow' came out you could actually Google that their sales went up 1000+ percent." The same could be said for her line about Balenciaga in "I Like It Like That." Cardi explained, "That sh*t went up too, and that's why they worked with me this year. Like hip-hop, we start trends."
Cardi used this same topic to silence any critics who might question the authenticity of a designer bag on the arm of a Black or Hispanic woman. "There's a lot of boss-ass b*tches out here," she reaffirmed, referencing the racist assumptions women of color face. "There's b*tches that's getting money out here."
And if a bag isn't designer, Cardi wants her fans to know that's absolutely fine. "Let me tell you something: if you're a regular girl you don't gotta break your neck to have a Birkin. A Birkin don't make you," she said. "They makes that fashion with the Zara and the H&M amazingly. So don't ever feel like you gotta compare yourself. Don't compare yourself to nobody [on] the internet. This internet sh*t is fake. You still a bad f*cking bitch. Period."
This Stunning Audition Had All of The Voice Judges in Awe: "That's Not an Easy Song to Sing"
The Voice introduces us to incredible singers every season, and Desz has risen to the top of that list. The Texas singer stepped onto the NBC stage during Monday's episode to audition with Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" - and totally wowed the judges. After the first note, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Gwen Stefani all started swaying in their seats. How could they not?
It didn't take long for all four coaches, including Blake Shelton, to turn their chairs and compete to get Desz on their team. "Even the dumbest person on the planet couldn't help himself from hitting his button," Shelton joked. Desz's song choice and incredible vocals definitely set her apart from the pack, but who did she end up choosing? We'll have to wait and see, but for now, watch the performance that astounded the judges above.
Kaavia James Is Ready to Skip Down the Yellow Brick Road in This Adorable Lion Costume
Gabrielle Union isn't waiting to dress Kaavia James up for Halloween, and you know her adorable lion cub costume is just the first outfit in Kaavia's extensive Halloween wardrobe. Gabrielle shared photos of Kaavia all dressed up to Instagram on Oct. 26, and the toddler even has matching whiskers painted on to make her look like a true lion queen. "I really do hope the lion sleeps tonight," Gabrielle joked in the caption. "I cant take the cuteness."
A few of Kaavia's notable outfits from last year include a dinosaur, a pineapple, a daisy, and one of the cutest little jack-o'-lanterns we've ever seen. Considering that Halloween is less than a week away and Kaavia's birthday is shortly afterward on Nov. 7, we expect to see many more cute outfits from the toddler soon. Ahead, shop her sweet costume for the little lion cub in your life, and then take some inspiration for even more kids' Halloween costumes.

This Stunning Ice Dance to "Hallelujah" Just Won Our Hearts - and a Gold Medal
Like most other sports, figure skating was put on pause back in March. Now the circuit is officially back for the 2020-2021 season, and while things might look a little different - the stands are full of cardboard cutouts, the applause is recorded, and the field was smaller than usual given coronavirus-related travel restrictions - it did nothing to minimize the magic of the performances we saw at Skate America 2020.
The routine that had us catching our breath was Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue's gorgeous free dance, set to a "Hallelujah" medley by Jeff Buckley and K.D. Lang. The graceful performance flowed beautifully and was filled with difficult elements, five of which received Level 4 classifications, the highest level possible. And, fun fact: the pair has actually danced to "Hallelujah" before (back in 2015-2016) and felt compelled to bring the track back this season. "This offseason we looked for different music, but inevitably, we were drawn to the idea of marrying the (Buckley and Lang) versions," Hubbell told teamusa.org. The routine was also choreographed by Scott Moir, the retired Canadian ice dancer who won two Olympic golds with partner Tessa Virtue.
The elegance of every movement, intertwined with the emotional resonance of the music, made this a performance we couldn't take our eyes off of. And the judges apparently agreed; thanks to their score of 126.09 on this routine, Hubbell and Donohue took home the gold medal at Skate America. Watch the artistry for yourself above!
