"I Will Not Be the Last": Kamala Harris's Victory Speech Sent Inspiration to Girls Everywhere

Kamala Harris was first out on the stage in Wilmington, DE, tonight, as she and Joe Biden addressed the American people for the first time as vice president-elect and president-elect of the United States. While Biden's speech focused on unifying the American people and laying out key policies, Harris used her time to frame the race as a mandate not only against Donald Trump, but for the upholding of democracy. Along the way, she took stock of her own place in history, as now the first woman, Black woman, and woman of South Asian descent to be elected as vice president.

Harris began her speech with a poignant quote from the late Congressman John Lewis: "Democracy is not a state, it is an act." What he meant, she explained, "is that America's democracy is not guaranteed. It is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it, to guard it, and never take it for granted." It was a gesture toward the struggle that many Americans went through to vote and make their voices heard this election, whether they were standing in poll lines for hours or fighting to get themselves registered.

"When our very democracy was on the ballot in this election, the very soul of America at stake, and the world watching," Harris said, "you ushered in a new day for America."

In the most emotional section of the speech, Harris focused on her own history and that of her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris. "When she came here from India at the age of 19, she maybe didn't quite imagine this moment," Harris said. "But she believed so deeply in an America where a moment like this is possible, and so I am thinking about her, and about the generations of women, Black women, Asian, white, Latina, Native American women, who throughout our nation's history have paved the way for this moment tonight." Black women in particular, Harris said, "are often too often overlooked, but so often prove they are the backbone of our democracy."

Drawing the speech to its powerful close, Harris turned to both President-elect Biden and the future of the country. "What a testament it is to Joe's character," she said, "that he had the audacity to break one of the most substantial barriers and select a woman as his vice president. But while I might be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last."

"Every little girl watching tonight," Harris went on, "sees that this is a country of possibilities. And to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: dream with ambition, lead with conviction, and see yourselves in a way that others may not, simply because they've never seen it before. But know that we will applaud you every step of the way."

"This Is the Time to Heal": Joe Biden's Victory Speech Brings a Message of Hope and Unity

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took the stage in Wilmington, DE, to accept the roles of president-elect and vice president-elect, bringing at least some closure to a long and tense race against President Donald Trump. Biden's rousing speech, delivered to a packed parking lot of mask-wearing supporters cheering from the hoods of their cars, delivered the strong message of unity and healing that he's championed throughout his campaign.

"I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide, but unify," the former vice president said. "Who doesn't see red states and blue states, only sees the United States." He soon addressed the voters who cast their ballots for Trump, telling them, "I understand your disappointment tonight. I've lost a couple times myself. But now let's give each other a chance. It's time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again. And to make progress, we have to stop treating our opponents as our enemies. They are not our enemies, they're Americans."

He added: "This is the time to heal in America."

While his speech looked toward both the future and the past, Biden also made a point of singling out Harris's historic achievement in the present. With Harris's election to the vice presidency, Biden said, she "makes history as the first woman, first Black woman, the first woman from South Asian descent, the first daughter of immigrants ever elected in this country. Don't tell me it's not possible in the United States. It's long overdue."

Biden also paused to recognize Black voters, whose support of him at the polls made his election possible. "Especially for those moments when this campaign was at its lowest ebb, the African American community stood up again for me. You've always had my back, and I'll have yours."

And, as he has throughout his campaign, Biden assured voters from across the political spectrum that he would fight for and represent them in the Oval Office. "I'm a proud Democrat, but I will govern as an American president," he said. "I will work as hard for those who didn't vote for me as those who did."

Celebrities Who Never Endorsed Biden-Harris Seem Too Comfortable Claiming Their Victory

Over the past few months, several celebrities have tirelessly gone to bat for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the hopes of seeing them become the next president and vice president. On Nov. 7, their efforts came to fruition when the duo were declared the projected winners of the 2020 election. These stars certainly have reason to take pride in their contributions. However, consider me a little skeptical about the celebrities suddenly coming out of the woodwork as silent Biden-Harris supporters all along.

If you're following an influencer on social media, I can almost guarantee you've come across a vague request to "Vote" or "Let your voice be heard!" There were pushes to register, to perform your civic duty, to make sure every vote is counted. In elections past that might've been enough. But in 2020, those efforts don't cut it. We're battling for Black lives, for the LGBTQ+ community, for affordable healthcare, for a path through a deadly pandemic. We demand more.

We're battling for Black lives, for the LGBTQ+ community, for affordable healthcare, for a path through a deadly pandemic. We demand more.

You could see my eyebrows nearly touch my hairline when Kendall Jenner shared her reaction to the progressive win. "We did it!" she wrote on her Instagram Story. My first thought was, who did it? I certainly don't remember an endorsement post on her 'gram. To give credit where it's due, Kendall has been vocal about getting people engaged in the election. She opened up her platform of 141 million followers when she hosted Vote Save America on her Instagram Live and added a voting message to her Halloween costume. These were certainly efforts toward turnout, but a Biden-Harris endorsement they were not.

Her sister, Kim Kardashian, also shared a number of photos of the president-elect and vice president-elect on her social media following the election results, raising skepticism from her followers. Kim was famously cagey about where her allegiances lay, presumably because her husband, Kanye West, also launched a presidential campaign. West was never a viable candidate for this race, however, and Kim never formally endorsed him either. If she was vying for Joe Biden all along, it would've been nice to let her 191 million followers know.

The issue doesn't start or stop with a reality TV family, although they're among the few top-followed Instagram accounts that never endorsed a candidate. (Celebrities like Ariana Grande, Lizzo, and Taylor Swift used their massive platforms to firmly throw their support behind the Democratic candidates.) This reluctance to publicly pick a candidate reached the corners of TikTok where influencers like Addison Rae - who shares content with almost 70 million fans - have kept quiet about their votes. Comedian Kevin Hart also took a similar stance and reposted celebratory election content without ever endorsing Biden-Harris.

There's an argument to be made that celebrities shouldn't have to share their political opinions with fans. They're personal. They're private. But if you're passionate enough about a candidate to publicly celebrate their wins as your own, you should be comfortable cluing your followers in before they cast their ballots. Especially since these stars have influence. That's truly why "celebrity" and "influencer" are interchangeable. Not to harp on the Kardashian-Jenners, but they're proven to have significant sway when they do the bare minimum. Remember when Kylie Jenner posted a thirst trap that doubled as voter registration awareness? Her 'gram increased traffic to Vote.org by 1,500 percent. Imagine what an actual endorsement could've sparked.

Where were you months, weeks, even days ago?

What we needed before (and after) the election was clarity. When celebrities hide behind ambiguity, they distance themselves from communities who may need their help, may need their vote. It's incredibly frustrating for them to resurface after the votes have been cast and the fight has been fought, ready to take part in the celebrations. Where were you months, weeks, even days ago? It's easy to join the party once we've all started celebrating, but don't bother to show up if you never RSVP'd in the first place.

We're Just a Little Bit Obsessed With Annie Murphy and Emily Hampshire's IRL Friendship

Alexis Rose and Stevie Budd may not have much in common on Schitt's Creek, but IRL, the actresses who play them couldn't be closer. For five years and six seasons, Annie Murphy and Emily Hampshire spent endless hours together on set, and judging from all their cute pics together on social media, the two have forged a bond for life. It's a beautiful friendship that almost never happened because - as Annie revealed to Vulture during an April 2018 interview - she originally auditioned to play Stevie but knew she could never pull off the role once she saw Emily perform. "I don't want to live in a world where Emily doesn't play Stevie!" Annie added. And we don't want to live in a world where these two aren't besties. Check out the gallery for their cutest BFF pics of all time.

Is There an Ideal Time of Day to Take Vitamin D? A Dietitian Breaks It Down

Vitamin D plays a vital role in building strong bones and generally maintaining good health. For most adults, the recommended daily intake is 600 IU, which you can get from exposure to the sun and through certain foods. However, some people may need to supplement in order to stave off symptoms of D deficiency, including fatigue, bone pain, muscle aches, and mood changes. But if you want to make sure your vitamin D is properly absorbed, does it matter when you take it?

Generally, it's best to take vitamin D with your fattiest meal of the day, Kristin Gillespie, MS, RD, CNSC, an advisor for Exercise With Style, told POPSUGAR. She explained that, because vitamin D is fat-soluble, this will enhance absorption of the supplement. One study found that absorption of vitamin D was 32 percent higher when paired with a high-fat meal. Specifically, the participants ate a meal rich in monounsaturated fats (MUFAs), which can be found in foods like almonds, avocado, chia seeds, and olive oil.

Gillespie also suggests taking vitamin D and other fat-soluble supplements, such as vitamins A, E, and K, separately. Fat-soluble vitamins can reduce absorption of other fat-soluble vitamins when taken simultaneously, because they compete for the same receptors.

Remember, if you're ever concerned about whether you're getting an adequate balance of nutrients, talk to your doctor. They can check your vitamin D levels with a simple blood test and help you make any necessary changes to your diet, including supplementation if that seems like the right course of action.

Etsy’s Holiday Commercial About a Family Supporting Their Son’s New Boyfriend Is a Gift

Etsy has been tugging directly at our heartstrings with its new holiday ads, and this one might be my favorite so far. The video, titled "Gift Like You Mean It: New Guy," tells the story of Brandon and David, a couple home for the holidays who receive an unexpected gift. "Don't worry, they're going to love you," one of the men tells the other as his boyfriend prepares to meet his family for the first time.

As everyone gathers around the Christmas tree after dinner, the man's father walks up and hands them a gift. "We didn't forget about you. Welcome to the family," he says, revealing a miniature embroidery circle ornament that features a hand-stitched image of the two men with their names underneath. As someone who's seen this video six times, I can confirm that Brandon and David's smiles at the end are totally worth a watch. See the full, heartwarming video above, and check out these holiday gifts for the whole family once you've finished wiping away any lingering happy tears.

One Day at a Time: 20 Moments That Show Penelope For the Badass She Is

Bless Pop TV for resuscitating One Day at a Time when Netflix canceled it after just three seasons. The Alvarez family is the epitome of, well, a real family, in all its dazzling glory. With an assortment of delightfully quirky members – uber-woke and headstrong Elena, vivacious and forever young at heart Lydia, charming and outgoing Alex, unaware-at-times Schneider (yes, he's one of them), the tight-knit family knowns how to come around at the end of the day. Despite their differences, they have more in common than they let on – case in point, the way the three ladies devour their bags of Cheetos.

Bridging the gap between the two generations, Penelope (played by the phenomenal Justina Machado) is the glue that holds them all together. To fill the gaping period before season four resumes, here are a few oh-so-relatable gifs that prove that "Mami ain't no chump!"

Tom Holland Promotes Mask Safety in First Spider-Man 3 Photo: "Wear a Mask, I’m Wearing Two"

Some superheroes wear masks to protect their identities, but it looks like Spider-Man has started doubling up on face coverings to protect himself and those around him. In an Instagram post on Nov. 6, Tom Holland shared the first behind-the-scenes photo from the set of Spider-Man 3. "Wear a mask, I'm wearing two," Holland captioned the post, in which he's wearing a white PPE face mask over his redesigned black and red spidey suit. The shot's blue screen background doesn't give away much about the unnamed sequel to Far From Home, but catching a glimpse of Holland back in costume (with proper safety gear, no less!) has us even more excited to see him take on Electro and save the day. Listen to your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and wear a mask, and take a sneak peek at Holland filming Spider-Man 3 ahead.

Stretch Out Tight Wrists Before Yoga With This 10-Minute Arianna Elizabeth Video

Stretching is an important part of exercise that can protect you from injury and improve your flexibility. However, sometimes people focus on stretching certain parts of their bodies, like their backs and legs, and end up neglecting others, like their wrists.

Between working out and typing on a laptop for an extended period of time, the activities you may engage in on a daily basis can leave your wrists feeling super sore. If that sounds familiar, there's no need to worry. Arianna Elizabeth, a fitness influencer and certified yoga instructor, has a wrist-stretching warmup that might help.

The stretching sequence in the 10-minute YouTube video is meant to be used as a warmup before a yoga session. "It is super important to definitely stretch your wrists out before you start," Elizabeth explains in the video. "Especially if you're not super familiar with Down Dog, sometimes it can feel like there's a lot of pressure on your wrists."

For people with weaker wrists in particular, which Elizabeth stresses is totally normal, warming up with some stretches is a key step in strengthening them.

Elizabeth talks viewers through exercises such as wrist circles, flexing your wrists, and rolling your wrists out with your fingers interlaced. She then transitions into a tabletop position on her hands and knees, and eventually into Downward Facing Dog. The Downward Facing Dog portion of the stretch is optional, though she gives helpful tips on how to make the position more comfortable.

Check out the video to try the stretches for yourself, and remember to take rest breaks or make modifications whenever you need them.

You're Not Alone in Thinking The Mandalorian Theme Song Sounds Very Familiar

From the moment I heard the opening chords of The Mandalorian's theme song, I knew it reminded me of something, I just couldn't put my finger on what. It bothered me that I couldn't figure out what song I kept trying to hum along with it and Shazam wasn't any help - it just kept telling me the name of the theme song. Oddly enough, it wasn't until I was flipping through channels and came across Tropic Thunder that it hit me: the song it reminded me of was "Ball of Confusion" by The Temptations.

The bass line of the two songs are so similar that it's easy to start singing, "People movin' out, people movin' in," as the opening credits of each Mandalorian episode rolls. "I wanted the core soul to be organic. Then I wanted to add a tech sound to it," Ludwig Göransson, the composer of the theme song, previously told The Los Angeles Times. It's very much the cutting-edge vibe that The Temptations went for with "Ball of Confusion." Don't believe me? You can check out the mash-up of the two songs above or listen to each of the songs on their own ahead. While you're listening to the songs, try imagining The Child grooving to The Temptations while Mando shakes his head.

If You Don't Like These Grinch Tattoos, Your Heart Is Definitely 2 Sizes Too Small

The live-action version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a holiday movie that many of us have yet to tire of watching even 20 years after its debut. Aside from Jim Carrey's performance being downright hilarious, one key reason we love the movie so much is because, when you really think about it, the Grinch actually isn't the villain. Like many of us, he understands the importance of having a dog as a companion, recognizes how superficial Christmas can feel, and, most importantly, really just loves his peace and quiet.

That's to say that, once you get past the green hair and the fact that he considers broken glass comfort food, the Grinch is actually very relatable. So relatable, in fact, that he's even inspired some holiday fans to get tattoos in honor of the movie. From quotes to portraits of the Grinch to some of his adorable dog, Max, check out some of our favorite tattoos inspired by the Grinch ahead.
