10 Simple Steps to Becoming a Runner in 2017
If you're anything like us, you've already begun planning your New Year's resolution in November! And if your goal for 2017 is to become a runner - or at least start running - then we have 10 simple tips to help you get going. Get ready to crush your goals!
We've Got Something Awesome For Every Runner on Your Gift List (Stocking Stuffers Included)
- Make Your Resolution. Once you give yourself a goal, you'll feel that internal pull to keep going. Be loud about it! Share it with your friends and family, journal about it, leave yourself a Post-it note on your mirror . . . set your intention and stick to it. This will help you keep consistent through your journey this year.
- Get the Kicks. Invest in one good pair of running shoes. It's the one big thing you'll need to get going and keep your feet and joints healthy. Getting the right pair of running shoes can feel impossible if you're going it alone or have never done it before. Head to a specialty running store to do a fitting and gait analysis on a treadmill. The experts will walk you through every step of the process and ensure you're getting the best shoe for your body and stride - and the service is totally free!
- Don't Go Overboard. An ultramarathon coach told us the worst beginner running mistake: don't get a ton of clothes and stuff you don't need! Aside from a sturdy pair of shoes, you'll want a sports bra and probably some shorts, but you don't need every fancy piece of running gear out there (although if that's what motivates you to keep going, by all means . . . )
- Start a Program. Try a walk-to-run program that'll help you gently ease into a faster pace than walking. It'll build your confidence as much as it builds your stamina. This will also keep you on track and staying on top of your resolution for at least eight weeks.
- Don't Rush It. If you've never run in your life, you're not going to start out with eight-minute miles. In fact, you might not even get to that by December of 2017. And that's OK! Keep things slow and steady, or you'll get discouraged and maybe even give up. Pace yourself by starting slow - slow enough to hold a conversation or sing "Happy Birthday" comfortably.
- Get the Tunes. Get yourself some running playlists from our Spotify, or make your own! Great tunes (at the right pace) can make a massive difference in your running experience.
- Get an App. Download a running app will help to keep you on track, show you your pace and distance of each run, and eventually show you your average pace, total mileage, and progress. Checking back on your progress and seeing how far you've come is an excellent way to stay motivated.
- Give Yourself a Goal. Aside from your goal of "become a runner this year," it's super helpful to set some small goal as a benchmark - running coach Robin Arzon refers to this as "micro successes." Sign up for a local 5K - you might not be there to actually race, but you're signing up to give yourself some kind of tangible goal.
- Cross Train. One of the hardest parts for new runners is the burning sensation in your lungs; you don't have the cardio strength or lung capacity in those early stages of running. Try yoga -it helps so much with breathing! Cross training will also help build strength to prevent injury, which could sideline your running career for good. No bueno. Stay safe, and train smart.
- If All Else Fails . . . You don't have to be a runner. If you've given it a fair shot for a few months and find that it brings you no joy, or if you find out you actually don't have the knees or feet for a high-impact sport like running (pain is a pretty good indicator of this), then don't feel bad. There are plenty of plenty of other activities you can switch to, and you can change your New Year's resolution accordingly. Be kind to your body!

Lucasfilm Shuts Down All Hope For a Sequel to Rogue One
If you've been eagerly counting down the days until Rogue One hits theaters, don't expect to do the same thing for Rogue Two. The Star Wars spinoff stars Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, the leader of a group of Rebels tasked with stealing the plans for the first Death Star from the Empire so that Luke Skywalker can later destroy it, all while avoiding a band of bounty hunters sent after them by Darth Vader and new villain Orson Krennic. Despite its intriguing premise and the amount of theories already swirling about the familial connections between the franchise's characters, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shut down any hope for a sequel.
In the latest issue of Empire magazine, Kennedy is joined by Lucasfilm chief creative officer John Knoll and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards in saying that no matter how well the standalone movie does after its Dec. 16 release, that's as far as these characters' stories will go. At this point the prequel to A New Hope is slated to rake in millions of dollars, making it hard to believe that Hollywood execs wouldn't try to capitalize on it. According to /Film's interview with Kennedy last year, however, she's always maintained that these single-serving Star Wars films "are not being designed to necessarily build new franchises." It's a bold choice in a time when sequels are dominating the movie industry and makes us wonder if the same rule will apply to the upcoming Han Solo movie.

Pitbull's Most Frequently Used Lyrics are Predictably Hilarious
A Pitbull party anthem is instantly recognizable when it comes on the radio. The reason might not be something you can put your finger on, but you always know that it sounds distinctively like Mr. 305. Finally, someone on Reddit has pointed out exactly what all Pitbull songs have in common: the singer uses the same combinations of three words very frequently.
Brilliant Reddit user TheHudek created a hilarious bar graph of how many times Pitbull uses his favorite three word combinations. According to TheHudek's calculations, Mr. Worldwide uses "la la la" 118 times and "girls girls girls" 80 times in his songs.
Check out the graph below for a good chuckle.
12 Embarrassing Christmas Songs You Definitely Turn Down in the Presence of Others
Christmas is the perfect time of year to grab a cup of cocoa, sit by the fire, and listen to timeless and classic albums from Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby. But while we all can't get enough of the popular holiday tunes every year (Mariah Carey, we're lookin' at you), there are some songs that we just don't want to admit to loving (passionately loving, at that). From Justin Bieber's "Mistletoe" to Hanson's "Merry Christmas, Baby," there are plently of songs that we turn down when stopped at red lights, in elevators with other people, or at our desks at work. These songs live within all of us, and it's time to let our freak flags fly.
10 Survival Tips For the First Year With Twins
I can still distinctly remember our joy on the day we learned our two little guys were on the way. After my husband and I both recovered from the initial shock of witnessing two steady heartbeats on the ultrasound screen, I remember feeling sorry for all of the other expecting moms in the doctor's waiting room thinking most were only expecting one baby. I'd always been an overachiever and, I'll be honest here, this whole having-two-babies-at-once thing felt like the epitome of overachievement.
I wrote a list of suggestions for a friend who had recently found out she was having twins and figured there are other expecting twin mommas out there who could use the same advice. And remember, my boys are 6. I survived. They survived. You've got this.
1. Realize you're in survival mode.
In the first few months, which I affectionately coined the "Let's Just Keep Everyone Alive" season, do not exert energy on any activity that is not critical to the survival of your little tribe. Remember that everyone (importantly, and often overlooked, YOU, momma) needs to eat. Shamelessly enlist friends and family to prepare meals for you. Freeze meals. Order takeout. Do whatever you can to ensure you are feeding everyone.
Drink a lot of water.
Sleep whenever and wherever you can. And do not believe for one second that you will be able to "nap when the babies nap." That is nonsense that moms of singletons throw in your face to make you feel even crazier than you already do. These babies do not sleep at the same time. There is always someone who needs a clean diaper or has to eat. I had a strict rule that if you have arms or feet (sleeping babies in a car seat can be rocked with a foot, thank you very much), you were allowed in my house to help. And while you rock (whoever you are, it doesn't really matter as long as you are rocking/feeding/changing a baby), I sleep. Period.
2. Breathe through the tears.
They will cry. A lot. And usually at the same time. And, yes, you will be alone with them when they cry. At the same time. I'm warning you now; these two teeny, tiny, wobbly little humans will bring you to your knees. Your heart will break when you come to terms with your physical inability to calm both babies. You will cry and you will do your best to contort your arms and legs into bizarre positions in order to attempt holding and feeding two newborns at once. (I had some success holding one while resting one in the crook of my knee while bouncing my leg and rocking my arms.)
And, even though I couldn't stand it when people told me this, I'm going to say it: it is OK if they cry. It's OK. In the spirit of Anna and Elsa, let it go! Let go of the guilt. I promise you, they will soon become these little people who can feed themselves (Yes! It is amazing!) and they will not remember which baby you fed first at 3 a.m. when they were 5 weeks old. They won't. I promise. (OK, I don't know this for sure, but I'm about 99.9 percent confident here.)
Focus on the most urgent need first. Then, move on to the next baby. All the while praying that someone will miraculously drop by to see if you need any help (Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, God, for all of the merciful "drop-ins" during my first few weeks home alone with the boys).
3. How to transport two babies from Point A to Point B.
First, you can cancel your gym membership (as if that didn't already happen the second your doctor gave you the order to stop working out during pregnancy with twins - or was that just me?), because you will be doing some heavy lifting. Lugging two car seats is a workout. Those things weigh a ton. Then, add the weight of the babies. You are easily benching 450, girl (give or take a pound). You are superwoman.
And the trick to getting the babies in the car is to load them up in their infant seats inside of the house. Leave one on the floor while you put one in the car and then go back for the other.
*Bonus points if you have a black lab who keeps watch over the baby sitting inside since you will worry that your newborn has unlatched himself and jumped out of his seat in the 45 seconds that you were away. It sounds crazy, but you too will become a frantic loon when running on two hours of sleep. Just trust me on this and prepare your people for it: lack of sleep can turn the most sane, calm momma into a full-blown crazy person.
4. Don't worry about leaving the house (especially by yourself).
It won't happen. There will always be someone who spit up and needs an outfit change. Or someone who needs a diaper change. Or someone who needs to eat again. Just take each day in stride. If you are able to walk the twins to the end of the driveway in their stroller, count that as a success. Remember that this is just a short season of life. This too shall pass.
5. Really, just stay home (at least for a while).
Trust me, I once tried to meet a friend for lunch the week after the boys came home from the hospital. My friend had also just had a baby so it seemed like a fun idea. I mean, isn't that what new moms on maternity leave do? (Did you notice the very important detail here? My friend had A newborn. ONE.) Speaking from experience, as a momma of twins AND a momma to a singleton, taking one baby to lunch with a friend is completely reasonable. Taking two babies to lunch (with a friend who has her own baby and can't even help hold one of yours) is a bad, bad idea. I'm sorry, people of Panera. You shouldn't have had to see that.
Just avoid it for as long as you possibly can.
6. Be prepared: people are weird and they say weird things.
My favorite: a friend of mine kept getting asked if her boy/girl twins were identical (I wish I were kidding).
People will ask if your babies are "natural" (don't even get me started on that one), and everyone will ask if twins run in your family (an unveiled attempt to be subtle when asking if you conceived with the assistance of fertility treatments).
Just smile and remember that your babies will grow up and become less fascinating to passing strangers eventually.
7. Write everything down.
You will forget which baby you fed at the 3 a.m. feeding. It's inevitable.
*And, on that note, wake brother/sister up after you finish the first feeding to keep the babies on the same schedule. As awful as the thought of waking a sleeping baby is, it's the best option if you hope to get any sleep between nighttime feedings.
8. Let go of expectations.
I mean it. Let 'em go.
9. Slow down and marvel at the miracles in your arms.
TWO BABIES. Double the joy. Truly, each and every day will reveal new reasons to be grateful for the double portion in your arms. Back to #7 . . . write it all down.
I promise, with each passing day you will gain more confidence in your ability to parent these two little people. You will laugh with them and chase after them as they learn to crawl and then walk (in opposite directions, of course). You will watch their individual personalities emerge and you will be in awe of their devotion to one another. You will be overwhelmed with kisses and hugs at the end of a long day.
10. Throw a party on the 365-day mark!
Celebrate! You ALL MADE IT! Toddlerhood brings new challenges, but you survived the first year . . . the hardest by far with twins, in my opinion. Take time to reflect on the past year with loved ones. And, of course, Champagne.

Brie vs. Camembert: What's the Difference?
While both brie and camembert are cow's milk cheeses, are soft-ripening, and have a white, flowery rind, the two aren't interchangeable. So the next time you are at the store and must choose between brie or camembert, here's what you need to know.
- Production: During the cheese-making process, cream is added to brie, but in camembert, it is not; as a result, brie is 60 percent milk fat, while camembert is only 45 percent. In addition, camembert uses stronger lactic starters that are inoculated into the cheese mold five times, contributing to a stronger-flavored cheese. Brie's lactic starters are only put into the cheese mold once, therefore the cheese is milder.
- Outer appearance: The diameters of brie and camembert cheese molds are different. (Notice the Saint André brie to the left appears taller and smaller than the flat, round Ile de France camembert to the right. The camembert cheese mold has a specific size and weight of 250 grams.
- Inner appearance: Brie tends to have a whitish inside, while camembert has a deeper yellowish color. A very ripe camembert will have runny insides; most versions of brie in America, however, are stabilized, meaning the cheese's center will have a firm texture that will never turn runny.
- Smell and taste: Brie has a light, buttery scent and flavor with a salty finish. Camembert can be on the funkier side and smell earthy and barnyard-y like mushrooms or hay, with an intensely savory, umami flavor.
- Affinage: Brie is made to be consumed immediately. While Americans tend to eat cheeses on the younger side, in France, most will practice affinage, or the art of ripening cheese, and will wait for six or eight weeks before cutting into a wheel of gooey, ripened camembert.
Which do you prefer: brie or camembert?

Why 1 Makeup Artist Plans to Sue Kylie Cosmetics
Los Angeles-based makeup artist Vlada Haggerty plans to sue Kylie Cosmetics over the images the company has used to promote its products. According to a statement the artist's lawyer gave Women's Wear Daily, the copyright infringement lawsuit will be filed early the week of Nov. 28.
This is not the first time Vlada has expressed an issue with Kylie Cosmetics's marketing images. Previously, the artist took to Instagram to discuss an image she collaborated on with photographer Julia Kuzmenko McKim in September, which resembles an image used to promote Kylie's Holiday Collection. Additionally, the Jenner sister's iconic "dripping lips" logo closely parallels an artistic style Vlada had popularized prior to the company's launch.
According to a statement from Vlada's lawyer to WWD, the logos cause public confusion. "Kylie Cosmetics sells its products under a logo that is so similar to the dripping lip art style that symbolizes Ms. Haggerty's makeup artist brand that she receives daily inquires as to whether she is associated with Kylie Cosmetics," said Stephen McArthur of the McArthur Law Firm.
Photographer Julia Kuzmenko McKim, who frequently collaborates with Vlada, recently wrote a blog post where she outlined the history of similarities between Vlada's and Kylie Cosmetics's images. Julia claims that the same day she posted the holiday image that Kylie Cosmetics allegedly mimicked, she also posted another image in which she tagged photographer Marcelo Cantu. Marcelo shot the Kylie Cosmetics holiday image in question, and Julia implies in her post that he must have seen the image and used it as inspiration.
Julia also addresses the frequent comment that the lips in the two images are very different. (Julia and Vlada's image contains a glossy lip while Kylie Cosmetics's image features a matte look.) The photographer includes an image of another piece of Vlada's work from September with a lip that looks similar to the lip in Kylie Cosmetics's photo.
Kylie's representative did not respond to requests for comment. Vlada and her lawyer have been reached for comment and this article will be updated as new information becomes available. In the meantime, read on to see the images in question for yourself.
The Easiest Ways to Properly Clean Your Phone - Because It's Disgusting AF
Neglecting to clean your cell phone is a nasty tech habit to break this Fall. Cell phones have been proven to carry bacteria, germs, even feces. Yes, feces. If there's one new routine to create for yourself, it's keeping that smartphone shiny and clean. Your health will thank you. Check out a few of our tech-friendly tips to clean that gadget, below.

Using a tried-and-tested cleaner like iKlear ($19, originally $20) will ensure you won't damage your phone's sensitive bits. Use the included microfiber cloth (or one of your own) and shine that baby up.
- If you don't want to spring for a special formula, a 40/60 alcohol-to-water mixture on solid phone parts and keyboards should be OK for your devices (use a damp cloth and/or cotton swab for small and hard-to-reach places). However you do not want to use any sort of alcohol, ammonia, or harsh cleaning agent on touch screens.
- If you're in a pinch and want to quickly rid your phone of dirty crevices and fingerprints, use a piece of Scotch Tape to peel away dirt and dust in between keys, and rid your phone of fingerprints. Perfect for when you're at the office (without a microfiber cloth), but unfortunately it won't help the germ situation.
- Serious germaphobes can ensure a clean device with the PhoneSoap Charger ($60), which cleans, sanitizes, and charges your device all at once. Just drop it in once a day for germ-free surfing and calling.

These Are the Best Celebrity Makeup Looks of 2016
This year was eclectic when it came to makeup looks. There were those who consistently went for the eye-catching bold and bright (Demi Lovato and Sofia Vergara wanted all the attention), while others stuck to three keywords: subtle, shimmery, and golden (Becky G, Selena Gomez, we're talking to ya). A fringe benefit of this all over the place range? The seemingly limitless amount of beauty inspiration you have to inspire your New Year's Eve and 2017 beauty looks. Scroll ahead to find our top eight celebrity makeup looks of the year and a few shopping links to buy everything you need to easily recreate them.
10 Major Mistakes You're Making When You Try to Straighten Curls
The process of the classic "press and curl" has come a long way from the hot-comb and hair-grease days. We're not talking about your average blowout here. Getting coarse, thick, or curly hair straight requires more than a round brush and blow dryer.
You need to know the proper technique and own several different hot tools to achieve a silky finish on natural textures - and even some pros can't do it without snapping a comb in half, popping the nozzle off the blow dryer, or causing permanent damage to your curls. Before you trust a blowout bar with your delicate strands, we challenge you to try straightening at home (you just might get better results).
We've enlisted the help of Johnny Wright, celebrity hairstylist and artistic style director of Amla Legend, to break down the 10 major mistakes you're making when you flat-iron your curls - with easy fixes. Plus, he reveals the frizz-fighting trick he uses on the first lady to keep her natural hair sleek after a workout.

Now You Can Watch Every Single Harry Potter Movie in Under 80 Minutes
It can be nice, from time to time, to go back and watch every single Harry Potter movie. The series seems to contain an infinite amount of magic, nostalgia, and joy. But, listen: not all of us have 20 hours to dedicate to such a beastly task. Luckily for us, one heroic Muggle took it upon himself to condense all of the movies into a single, 80-minute film. Vimeo user Tim Stiefler uploaded the masterpiece just this week, and it's like the perfect primer to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Or, you know, it's a great way to get a dose of wizardry in a pinch. Behold the magic above.

Gilmore Girls: The Reason Emily's Maid Is So Familiar Will Blow Your Mind
Gilmore Girls went out of its way to create fun moments for superfans, but there's one connection in A Year in the Life that is nearly impossible to see right off the bat. Emily's new maid Berta, the one she actually likes and keeps finally, is played by an actress we've all definitely met already: Rose Abdoo. While the name may not ring a bell, you'll definitely recognize her in her usual getup as Gypsy the mechanic:
Same. Person. Abdoo has appeared on Scandal, Veep, Parenthood (with her fellow costar Lauren Graham), and Mike & Molly (with her other fellow costar, Melissa McCarthy), but this time, she's hiding in plain sight! Boom.

This Is the Target Shopping Cart That's Changing the Lives of Families With Disabilities
If you don't have a child with special needs, it's hard to understand just how difficult seemingly simple tasks can be for a family. For the Standifords, even a trip to the grocery store is met with stress because of the difficulty in transporting their 6-year-old daughter, Savannah, who has a rare chromosomal deletion that causes life-threatening conditions such as uncontrolled epilepsy, cerebral palsy, heart defects, chronic kidney disease, and severe intellectual impairments.
"When Savannah was younger we were easily able to whisk her up - oxygen tank, apnea monitors and all - and put her in [a] cart or use her stroller for transportation," Adam Standiford, Savannah's father, told ABC News. "As she has aged, she has grown. . . . She is currently almost 4 [feet] tall and nearing 35 pounds. She no longer fits in a standard shopping cart."
When his wife made a recent trip to her local Target in Dardenne Prairie, MO, she discovered something that wouldn't get a second glance from most shoppers but would surely alter her family's life forever. It was a shopping cart designed for older children and adults with disabilities.
Named Caroline's Cart after the creator's daughter, who suffers from Rett syndrome, the simple device "will change how we can shop," Adam said. So moved by the introduction of such a cart, he took to Facebook to thank Target personally.
Dear Target,
I can't express enough how happy my wife was to see this at our local Target today. We have a 6year old handicap girl who either doesn't fit in carts anymore or gets weird looks to as why she's sitting in the basket and can't walk like a normal child. This simple cart literally will change how we can shop, not having to worry as to how we are going to get her into a store. Every retailer in the country should follow suit! It is also quite ironic that my wife's name is Carolyn and the cart is called Caroline's cart. I will forever be Target loyal!
Sincerely,
Every parent of a special needs kid
The post, which already has 117,000 likes, is filled with comments from other parents of children with special needs, all of whom are either sharing their stories about their experience with the shopping cart or asking when one will make it to a store near them. Thankfully, Target was listening:
"Target is always looking for new ways to improve our guests' shopping experience," a representative from the retailer wrote on Adam's Facebook post. "This is just another example of Target listening to guests and making changes based off of their feedback."
The rep went on to let other eager parents know that they are logging their requests.
Have you seen one of these shopping carts at your Target?
This Goat Comforted by a Duck Costume Is Almost Too Cute to Be Real
Personally, we've always felt that goats are the underrated cuties of the animal kingdom. Laying eyes on Polly the goat only confirms our suspicions.
This 6-month-old goat turned internet sensation hails from Goats of Anarchy, a goat rescue based in New Jersey. Anxious ever since since she was just a kid (get it?) Polly's caretakers told BuzzFeed News that the only solution that was ever able to successfully calm the poor girl was tucking her into a duck costume.
Not buying it? Goats of Anarchy staff wrote on Instagram, "Polly loves her duck suit. Polly NEEDS her duck suit. It puts her right to sleep. Tonight she was feeling anxious because I'm too busy to sit with her. I put her duck suit on and she's totally happy. It instantly soothes her! Its the strangest cutest thing." Whatever makes you feel your best, Polly! (And can we get one of these duck suits, please?)
Look through Polly's insanely adorable Instagram feed for a guaranteed mood booster, courtesy of one very stylish goat.
