Alicia Keys Offers Words of Wisdom For Young Girls - but Grown Women Can Benefit, Too
Alicia Keys was photographed for the March cover of Glamour at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. She was joined by a group of young women from The Lower Eastside Girls Club, beneficiaries of the magazine's philanthropic initiative The Girl Project - and in addition to opening up about her year-long journey going without makeup, the 15-time Grammy winner and mom of three also shared words of wisdom and empowerment that young girls and grown women alike can benefit from. When asked what she would tell her younger self, Alicia responded with a powerful, sincere message:
"There is this fallacy about how women are catty, that we're all in competition with each other. I'd say: As opposed to getting swept up in jealousy, use that pang to give you an indication of what you are looking for. Actually, there is this awesome performer Lilly Singh who always does this thing: 'Shout out another girl and tell her what you love about her.' Even doing that is such a good practice, I don't know if we tell women great news about themselves enough. You'd be surprised how often a young woman doesn't hear positive things about herself - not in her home, not at school. It's hard to create a beautiful image for yourself when you've never seen it or heard it."
Hear, hear!

Outraged Mom Speaks Out After 1 Elementary School Removed Her Child's Teeth
Shanda Flemming had no idea why her child came home from school crying, but when she discovered that it was because of something adults did to him rather than a fellow child, the mom was enraged.
Shanda's son, Michael, thought he was getting a routine teeth cleaning at school that day, but instead, the dentist extracted three of his teeth - and his mom wasn't notified before the procedure. After the school's visiting dental program finished the oral surgery, they sent the 9-year-old boy home without any pain medication, according to his mom.
"I just don't understand how a school or a company can take it in their hands to do something like this to a child," she told WJZ. "I'm angry about this. I don't think that it should have happened like that."
The Baltimore, MD, school has not yet commented on the incident, but Shanda acknowledges that she signed a permission slip at the beginning of the school year to allow Michael to receive dental work. However, she was under the impression that this was for routine cleanings, not oral surgeries.
This left her child unprepared for these extractions and his mom without the option of getting a second opinion or being there to comfort the third grader. Shanda also stated that Michael already had a scheduled appointment with a family dentist for later in the week and is outraged that the school didn't even bother to call her.
To make matters worse, the extractions took so long that Michael missed his bus and had to walk the mile from school to his home. "He walked home alone after having three teeth extracted from his mouth. He could have fallen over," Shanda said.

4 Most Common Causes of Belly Bloat (and 4 Cures!)
It's normal to feel bloated after a huge bowl of spicy chili or after eating three pieces of birthday cake, but if you're constantly feeling bloated every single day and are feeling extremely uncomfortable and depressed about it, we asked certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition to explain the most common causes of belly bloat so you can stop the cycle and feel better.
Guzzling
Eating too fast makes us swallow air, and since air that goes in has to come out, you'll end up feeling bloated. Slow down and focus on really chewing each bite thoroughly before swallowing. Also ditch carbonated beverages since these cause you to ingest air, and go for water instead since this can actually prevent bloating. Overeating falls into this category as well. If every meal involves you eating until you feel grossly stuffed, you're not only consuming extra calories that will lead to weight gain, but your digestive system can't handle the load, so it retaliates. Focus on eating until you're 80 percent full to avoid that sick, bloated feeling.
Surprising Foods
We know dairy products, beans, spicy or fried foods, broccoli, onions, cabbage, gluten for some, high-fat foods, and high-fiber fruits like apples and pears can cause that bloated feeling, but so can sugar and sugar alcohols. Try avoiding sugar substitutes, white and brown sugar, and even natural sugars like honey and maple syrup to see if you notice a difference. Sugar alcohols found in processed foods are also culprits so be a label reader so you can avoid xylitol, sorbitol, and mannitol. Companies also try to increase the fiber, labeled on the list of ingredients as chicory root or inulin, so you might want to ditch those foods as well.
Not Enough Roughage
Constipation is another cause of feeling bloated, so to keep things moving along, be sure to get 25 to 30 grams of fiber each day, including fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, and flaxmeal if you need a little extra help. Drink lots of water throughout the day and set aside 10 to 15 minutes to sit and do your business.
Bacteria Imbalance
Probiotics are good-for-you bacteria that live in our bodies, and if there is an increase of negative bacteria, that can cause digestive upset as well. Leslie recommends "adding a probiotic with good bacteria like bifidobacterium or lactobacillus to help reduce the gas your own gut produces." You can take supplements, drink probiotic beverages, eat fermented foods like kimchi, or down some yogurt (go for unsweetened), or there are even foods like granola or protein powder that contain probiotics.

See This Miss Universe Contestant Dance Like Nobody's Watching to Beyoncé's "Single Ladies"
How you distinguish a member of the Beyhive from the rest of the crowd. http://pic.twitter.com/VcrPpfWnMQ
- beyreigns (@beyreigns54) January 31, 2017
There's a lot of "hurry up and wait" when it comes to large-scale televised events, and during the Miss Universe pageant dress rehearsals on Monday night, one contestant in particular found the perfect way to bide her time. As Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" blared from the speakers, the group of women took their places on stage - but Miss Netherlands, Zoey Ivory, couldn't just stand there. The 23-year-old began performing an impromptu dance routine, nailing the iconic video's choreography as best she could without stepping out of line. Her moves immediately caught the attention of eagle-eyed audience members, who shared video of Zoey to social media. You can just see how badly she's trying to restrain herself from getting down on the floor.
After the clip of Zoey's moves went viral, she explained her hilarious actions to reporters. "They said we can relax during the rehearsal so when I heard the music I was just being me," she said. "At first I didn't even notice that people were looking at me. Then I started to hear the cheering and then I said, 'Oh my God, people are looking at me.' Then I went a little more full out." Oh, and she also confirmed that she is, in fact, a single lady.
How 1 Epic Mom Flawlessly Trolled an Apple Store With Her Selfies
Remember that legendary kid who pulled the cell phone store prank you've secretly always wanted to do? Well, one hilarious mom is currently breaking the internet by nailing a similar stunt - and the backstory makes it even more giggle-worthy.
Imgur user Zigzag0 posted photos of the act with a caption that explained, "My dad and I (jokingly) told my mom we would leave the apple store only after she had taken a 'selfie' on every single device...next thing I know her face is all over the store." It looks like she took the joke a little too seriously, as she got down to business with her selfie-taking.
The photos quickly went viral, garnering comments of approval like "Worthy of recognition. Go mom!" and "Your mom rocks." And thus an internet legend was born. The unnamed mother left no device un-selfied, as she changed the background of what appears to be every single iPad and iPhone in the store. This woman is a fearless prank queen, and we're all about it.
How to Smartly Grocery Shop at Costco For 1
Costco's low prices for bulk groceries seem like an obvious choice for families, but what about parties of one? If you live alone or are shopping for just yourself, here are some smart choices you can make in the food section to take advantage of the deals without accidentally wasting your pretty pennies.
Never Go to Costco Hungry
You'll be swayed to purchase all the samples, but once you're home, you'll wonder why in the world did you think it was a good call to buy a triple pack of spicy tofu noodes?! Therefore, always make a list prior to going to Costco and eat before you enter the aisles. If you forget, do thyself a favor and eat a slice of pizza from the food court.
Buy Your Staples ONLY
You know what you eat day in and day out and what you constantly buy at the grocery and seem to always run out of. If you can't say with confidence that you can finish a large container of something and quickly, too, don't purchase it. Also, use Costco's coupons for your favorite items rather than for something random that sounds enticing.
Become BFFs With Canned and Frozen Foods
What do canned soups, canned tuna, beer, and frozen burritos have in common? These groceries have an extended shelf life and are packaged up for one. Perfect! Consider this when purchasing groceries. Frozen fruit and veggies are also usually safe for the solo grocery buyer, but be sure you are choosing items that you'll really and truly want to eat on the regular.
Be Careful When It Comes to Perishables
Milk, eggs, cheese, and fresh meat and produce can spell trouble for the solo shopper since they come in such large packages. Yogurt and butter may be the few exceptions, as they usually come in smaller, more manageable packages.

These 9 Crime Documentaries on Netflix Will Shock and Amaze You
The last couple of years have been rich with a somewhat new genre of programming: true-crime documentaries. Shows like Making a Murderer and the podcast Serial have kept us riveted - and the fact that they're based on real-life events means that the stories behind the shows are constantly evolving.
That being said, it can be incredibly hard to parse through the glut of shows and movies on Netflix - there's an entire category devoted to crime! - but we have watched all of them and have nine recommendations that will have you glued to your seat and scrambling for more.
The Surprisingly Simple Thing Great Parents Do Every Day
With both solicited and unsolicited advice seemingly surrounding you from the moment that you learn that you're pregnant, figuring out how to become a good parent can feel impossible. However, there's one thing that moms and dads can do daily that will not only impact their children now, but will also help shape the people they will become: always focus on both "the near and far."
According to clinical psychologist Erica Reischer, this vital strategy means balancing the short game and the long game of parenting. "The long game means raising kids that are really kind, happy, confident, good citizens and also having a really good relationship with your kids that's based on mutual trust and mutual respect," Erica told POPSUGAR Moms.
The short game is how you deal with immediate problems, and it's important for parents to remember in the moment that how they deal with these issues now actually has powerful impact on the future. Erica refers to this as the "Thanksgiving Effect," and describes it as when kids leave the house, parents want them to come home to visit not because they feel obligated to, but because they have great relationships and want to spend time with them.
According to Erica, there are a few things that parents do now without realizing that they can compromise the long game. "There are all these different ways in which we try to solve the short game, like just get through this moment, this day, this problem, and we're not thinking broadly about 'What's the long-term approach of doing this regularly?'" Erica said. "So I think that's one of the big things great parents do, is that they try to think about the long-term implications of the day to day, because little things add up."
Here's what parents should keep in mind daily in order to set themselves and their families up for future success:

Day-to-day life with kids can be extremely hectic as parents are trying to help another person develop while also trying to get what needs to be accomplished for the day finished on time. Erica explains that while anger and frustration are very common experiences of parenting, resorting to yelling as a response will only solve the short game needs.
Yelling creates a "problematic communication dynamic" because in a sense, when you yell at your kids, you're doing it because they haven't been listening to you. That means you're unintentionally teaching them to wait until you yell before they can take you seriously. "When this happens, you're also showing your kids that you only really mean it when you're mean, so they're going to ignore you until you yell because otherwise you might drop it," Erica said. "That's compromising your long game because now you have this dynamic where it's a frequent thing where you're yelling at your kids a lot; then that doesn't feel good."
Resist Always Coming to the Rescue
When kids forget their homework, leave their lunch, or have an upsetting interaction with a teacher or friend, parents often want to jump in and solve it for them. Although this might solve things now, it can also be problematic in the future. "In the short game, we're solving the problem and that feels good to us and to them, but in the long game, what are the long-term implications of not letting them experience that situation, experience the feelings of disappointment, sadness, anxiety that comes with it," Erica explained. "They need to learn how to cope with those feelings, and kind of muddle through and figure out ways to deal with that with our coaching."
Erica notes that this is different than just leaving them to their own devices, but that parents should be conscious of taking a backseat approach when possible.
Meet Feelings With Feelings
Having empathy is something that great parents do, and Erica defines it as not trying to talk kids out of their feelings when they are really upset about something. Many parents don't realize that they are doing this daily because their little ones often have big feelings about things that Mom and Dad don't have the same emotions about.
"When they drop their ice cream cone, for example, and they're flipped out about it, some try to help the situation by saying, 'Honey, it's OK, it's just an ice cream cone, don't cry,'" Erica said. "We mean well when we say that and we're trying to help them see that it's not a big deal. But for many kids, when we say that to them, it can make them feel misunderstood, that we don't respect their reality, which is different than our reality."
Even if issues are minor in your realm, you should try to meet your child's problems with empathy instead of always rationalizing them away. "So with the ice cream cone, instead of saying 'Oh honey, you know it's no big deal, it's OK,' you would say instead, 'I know you're so upset because the ice cream dropped and you really were looking forward to eating that,'" Erica said. "It's empathizing with them and this is a really subtle shift that can make a big change in any relationship."
8 Things You Never Knew About Trader Joe's, Straight From a Former Employee
I spoke to a former employee who worked at Trader Joe's for a year, and he gave me the inside scoop on how the company is run, the little-known details of the return policy, and what the point of those somewhat-annoying bells is. Spoiler alert: there's no real dirt (I tried!), but what I got was interesting, behind-the-scenes intel that made me an even bigger fan of the store.
There's a reason the customer service is so good.
Trader Joe's strategy in providing a quality customer-service experience is simple: overstaff. "They totally overstaff so that you don't feel like your stocking duties or your register duties trump interacting with customers - they encourage you to be nice to customers." That's why you can almost always find someone in a Hawaiian t-shirt or crew-member uniform walking around and waiting to help you find anything.
The employees try all the new products so they know what to tell customers.
"Each Trader Joe's has a break room, and they have one person who's in charge of cooking new stuff that the store gets and making it available for the entire staff who comes through the store that day to try it. They want you to try all the products so you can have an opinion so that when you recommend stuff to people, it's not baseless."
The pay is REALLY good.
This guy started out at Trader Joe's making $12/hour, which was above the state's minimum wage. You not only start out making a good amount, but it gets even better quickly. After three months of working more than 30 hours a week, you get health insurance and a 401K. You'll also likely get a raise once or twice a year. A friend of this employee worked at Trader Joe's for over five years and made $21/hour - that's an annual salary of $42K.
They donate all unsold food.
"Trader Joe's donates a ton of food. It's called 'spoils,' which just means it's not in perfect shape. There's nothing wrong with eating a lime with a couple brown spots, but if you wouldn't buy it and be excited about buying it, then it gets put with spoils and typically gets donated. They donate flowers, produce - everything - to local organizations."
There's a method behind the bell ringing.
You've sometimes noticed employees ringing bells while you're checking out, right? There's a method to the madness, and it's sort of like the store's secret language for various customer-service needs. "One bell means everyone to your register, which means the lines are getting too long and they need everyone at a register. Two bells means you need an employee to come over and help with something. For example, let's say the bag of spinach you bought is partially opened or looks bad; you ring two bells and an employee will come over and grab a new one for you. Three bells means a manager needs to come over."
Every store has an in-house artist.
"Literally all of the signage around the store is custom-made by two or three artists who hang out in the back and almost exclusively do that, and register work every once in a while." That's why every store has location-based art throughout the store - pretty cool, right?
You can return ANYTHING.
Seriously, you could open a bag of popcorn, try it, and bring it back if you didn't like it - for a full refund. "You see that a lot. You get people who come back and say, 'Hey, I tried it, but I didn't really like it.'" Excuse me while I go try every single thing in the snack aisle.
They strive to create an experience that's beyond grocery shopping.
"They really push this whole, 'we don't want you to feel like you're just grocery shopping' thing. They want it to be an experience - something that pulls you out of the monotony of your everyday life."

Kim Kardashian Wants You to Know That She's Still Obsessing Over Pierced Nails
After taking months off from social media following her horrific Paris robbery, Kim Kardashian is making a triumphant return to her favorite platforms. Last week, she showed off an edgy, metallic pierced manicure in a series of Snapchat videos. We had initially been under the impression that Kim was rocking these cool claws for a photo shoot, but the above image makes us think that she's so fond of the funky style, she's wearing them IRL.
If you look closely, you can see that this is the exact same set of acrylics that she wore previously (there are a few empty piercings!), but they have been painted with a glossy black lacquer. And instead of the tiny golden hoops, she appears to be sporting a silver chain of Cuban links that dangle from her last three fingers. This leaves her thumbs and forefingers free for texting, natch.
Dedicated Kim fans know that she will likely not keep her lengthy nails for long. Kim famously prefers shorter nails, leaving sisters Khloé and Kylie to get experimental with acrylic manicures and nail art.
It's worth noting that pierced nails are not a particularly new craze. Stars like Janet Jackson and Victoria Beckham showed off their takes on the look in the '90s. However, we're pleased that the style is having another moment. Just think of them as a grungy choker for your finger!
This Chain Braid Accessory Is Absolutely Stunning For Wedding Parties
Just in time for Spring weddings, hair accessories brand Lelet NY and celebrity stylist Adir Abergel have teamed up on a collaboration. We've only seen a sneak peek via Instagram, but what's been teased is absolutely gorgeous. For the SAG Awards, Adir used what he is calling a "new liquid silver chain comb" on actress Vanessa Kirby. He fused the piece into a loose braid, which resulted in the perfect mix of glam and boho.
We got word from Lelet that the pieces will be available on Feb. 10 - right before Valentine's Day. Stay tuned to learn more about this accessories collection.

Chrissy Teigen Spoke For All IVF Couples When Someone Dared to Question Her Method
Chrissy Teigen has never been one to hold back on social media, whether it's about her daughter Luna's eczema or how celebrity moms drop that baby weight so quickly. It's one of the reasons we love her so much - and her latest Twitter takedown is no different.
After Chrissy told Entertainment Tonight at this weekend's Producers Guild Awards that a baby boy would be next for her and hubby John Legend, she had to clarify that this did NOT mean she was pregnant. She took to Twitter to explain to her fans that the reason they know the gender of their future baby is because of IVF.
"Since this is coming up again, I said our next baby would be a boy because that is the embryo we have left," she wrote on Twitter. "A boy. So. Yeah."
Since this is coming up again, I said our next baby would be a boy because that is the embryo we have left. A boy. So. Yeah.
- christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) January 30, 2017
And no, I am not pregnant.
- christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) January 30, 2017
But she definitely did not stop there. Chrissy's interaction with internet trolls never ceases to amaze us as she does it in a way that's so confident and RT-worthy. Plus, a filter never seems to be an option. Following her pregnancy rumor tweets, someone decided to question Chrissy's baby-making skills, and she shut them down instantly. Her response to this woman's ridiculous question will make any couple who's conceived through IVF beam with pride.
The woman wrote, "Did you give it a minute to try naturally or are you avoiding 'the act?' At least no political rants!" Chrissy responded, "Hi Linda, thanks for asking, you complete witch. I tried for about nine years. Anything else, let me know!"
@chrissyteigen did you give it a minute to try naturally or are you avoiding "the act?" At least no political rants!

- christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) January 30, 2017
Chrissy and John have been very open about their struggles to conceive naturally as well as their trials with IVF, but her response to this woman's question is just a reminder that their family's plans are no one's business but theirs. Sorry, Linda!
So THIS Is What Those All-Purple Spotify Ads Really Mean
Spotify takeover in Union Square, no ads just purple... http://pic.twitter.com/WeIcgQ1JYs
- Andy Thompson (@officiallyrad) January 30, 2017
If you've encountered one of Spotify's advertisements within the last week, chances are you scratched your head and assumed they were unfinished. The ads feature a bright purple hue with no words except the streaming service's logo in the corner. They've recently flooded cities like New York and London, leaving people wondering: What's the deal? What on earth is this even promoting?
An intriguing purple @Spotify banner has appeared at London's Spitalfields Market @Goodstuffers @TalonOOH @InfinityOutdoor ??? http://pic.twitter.com/DXaBsth59z
- Roy Shepherd (@OOH_Roy) January 30, 2017
It turns out they might be alluding to the music service nabbing the streaming rights to Prince's jams. This isn't the first time we've heard buzz about the late singer's music being released to streaming services; Billboard reports that Spotify's ads are likely hinting at his music becoming available by the time of his Grammys tribute on Feb. 12, 2017. Prince and the color purple go together like peanut butter and jelly, so these ads really couldn't be making it any more obvious.
We reached out to a Spotify representative for comment but have not received confirmation on the speculations yet. While we await their response, we're crossing our fingers that we can soon jam to "Little Red Corvette" on our morning commute.

7 Things People With Clean Kitchens Do Every Day
Do you hate to cook? Do you turn your nose when entering your kitchen and hurry out the door once your microwave beeps, signaling your frozen burrito is ready? And if we're really being honest, have you forgotten the last time you changed out your sponge or scrubbed the stove free of pasta-sauce splatters? It sounds like you have a messy kitchen. Marie Kondo, the New York Times bestselling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up sympathizes. That's why she developed a system, which is called the KonMari Method, that allows anyone, even the seemingly hopelessly messy, can take on successfully.
If you're curious about her unique purging technique, read about my experience of using the KonMari Method in my kitchen. After you've trashed all the dishware, cooking tools, and pantry items that don't "spark joy" - aka make you happy when you see, touch, and use them - it's time to take on these daily habits of people with clean kitchens to keep your own space neat without intense effort.
- Keep Everything Off the Kitchen Counter
-
I know, this one seems like a tough one, yet your blender, sugar bowl, coffee maker, and other knickknacky things not only take up space on your counter, but they also actually make it impossible to clean. They gather dust and oily muck on and around them, and you ignore it. The person with a clean kitchen wipes down all appliances, etc. with a warm, damp sponge before storing the items in shelves or cabinets. Yes, even those things they use every day.
- Wipe the Stove, Sink, and Counter With Each Use
-
Marie Kondo says, "Tidying your kitchen means wiping away any water or oil." If there's nothing on your stove, sink, or counter, it suddenly becomes really easy to run a sponge over these areas every day to clean up any splashes or spills. Ta-da! No crumbs or mysterious stains to be seen.
- Keep Dish Soap and Sponges Under the Sink
-
Having tried this out myself, I can attest to its effectiveness. After washing dishes, simply squeeze out the sponge and keep it in a wire sponge holder under the sink along with your soap and rubber gloves. It's a surprising trick to keep your kitchen looking neat and inviting.
- Store the Trash Can Under the Sink
-
There's something off-putting about having a trash can in the middle of the kitchen, even one with a sleek stainless steel design. Storing your trash can under the sink keeps it out of sight and out of mind. I also love taking the trash out more frequently so my kitchen never smells.
- Wash and Dry Dishes Immediately
-
If you have a drying rack in your kitchen, get rid of it! It makes it all too easy to pile on the dishes without ever putting them away, plus the wet drippings pool and grow all sorts of gnarly things. Instead, do as the tidy person does and wash and dry the dishes immediately after a meal.
- Keep About 30 Percent of Your Fridge Empty
-
Ever wonder where you are going to put your leftovers or newly bought groceries? If you always have a few clear spots in your fridge, it makes it easy to find a designated spot for new things.
- Give Each Thing a Definite Home (Away From the Stove)
-
Though it's tempting to want to stash kitchen tools, spices, oils, etc. near the kitchen stove for easy access, this is a recipe for disaster. As things cook, the oil often splatters onto these items. In addition, the heat can drastically reduce the storage life of spices and oils, rendering them stale and rancid. Instead, store everything away from the stove. Before cooking, pull out all the equipment and food stuff you may need, and put each thing away, item by item, after its use. This makes cleanup way easier.

This Is How Oprah Transforms Scrambled Eggs Into a "Sexy Breakfast"
Oprah Winfrey stopped by The Dr. Oz Show to share recipes from her new cookbook Food, Health, and Happiness, including what she calls her "sexy breakfast." "I don't even know if you want to call this a recipe," Oprah said of the breakfast, which is scrambled eggs with salsa. But the real secret is in the heat of the homemade salsa - "lots of jalapeños in there," Oprah said, explaining that the recipe comes from Eduardo, "one of the guys that helps me at my house." The other key to perfect scrambled eggs, according to Oprah? Temperature - always serve them hot. "The thing about anyone who is a real cook . . . don't you want people to come to the table when the food is hot?" she asked Dr. Oz.

Making a Murderer Is Coming Back Sooner Than You Think
It's been well over a year since Netflix dropped Making a Murderer, a docuseries about the mysterious murder of Teresa Halbach. The episodes in season one focus primarily on the decade-long legal battle between Steven Avery, Brendan Dassey, and the city of Manitowoc. At the end of the 10 episodes, it's clear that the story hasn't quite come to an end. Avery filed for a new trial just last year, and Dassey's conviction was recently overturned. Netflix announced in July that season two was on the way, so the question then became, when can we expect new episodes?
This month, Netflix's VP of Original Content Cindy Holland spoke at a keynote conversation at the Realscreen Summit, where she commented on the status of the new season. "The story is still ongoing, so you will see new episodes coming sometime this year as this story continues to unfold," she said. "We don't know when for sure new episodes will be coming. Laura [Ricciardi] and Moira [Demos] are on the ground [in Manitowoc] shooting regularly and working on what the right story is to tell in the next set, so we're deferring to them on when it will be ready." This means Netflix is pretty much ready to go whenever, and when you think about the fact that the documentarians have likely been working nonstop since season one blew up at the end of 2015, we imagine it won't be long before they compile what they have into new episodes. A concrete date is surely right around the corner.

This Viral Photo of an Empty Crib Proves How Heartless Trump's Immigration Ban Is
Since Donald Trump signed an executive order banning citizens from seven Muslim countries from entering the United States, families across the world have publicized how the ban has affected them. Now, one mom is speaking out about the impact with a powerful photo.
Jennifer Kolsano took to Facebook to explain that a group of people in her Chicago neighborhood volunteered to help sponsor and bring a Syrian refugee family to the US. However, following Trump's ban, they found out the family was no longer able to enter the country.
"For those who have asked, we just received news that the refugee family we and several other neighbors were sponsoring will be forbidden from arriving on Monday due to the latest executive order," she wrote on Facebook. "Today Trump said he signed this action to keep out terrorists and to keep our country and our military safe. He has chosen to do that by barring an accountant, a literature major, and toddler from being reunited with their brothers, sister, parents, and grandparents after a two-year vetting process because of their country of origin and their religion."
Jennifer posted her story alongside a heartbreaking photo of an empty crib that the group had bought for the family's little girl. She and her neighbors had volunteered through the Refugee One organization, which Jennifer said had organized for 15 families to arrive at the Chicago airport over the next three weeks prior to Trump's ban.
In her post, she mentioned how ironic it was that Trump signed the executive order on Friday, Jan. 27, which is Holocaust Remembrance Day.
"And he has chosen to do that on a symbolic day on which we remember millions who died because of their religion," she wrote about Trump's horrifying ban. "Today will be remembered as one of the great moral failings of our nation just as our refusal to take in Jewish refugees during the holocaust."
The photo of the empty crib, which has since gone viral, shows how the ban is effecting innocent children all over the world, and Jennifer's final words encompass deep emotions regarding the current state of our democracy: "This order is fundamentally immoral and un-American and I am deeply ashamed of our government. And so so very sad for a young family fleeing war that we had just begun to know."
