Noemí González Hopes Netflix's Selena Teaches People to "Be a Light When the Going Gets Rough"

You may know Noemí González as Soli Gomez from East Los High or Mia Rosales from Young and the Restless, but you'll soon get to see her on the drums as Suzette Quintanilla for Netflix's Selena: The Series. That's right - the 32-year-old Mexican actress will be starring as the sister of late Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla, and she's well aware of how big of a feat that is.

While speaking with POPSUGAR, González recalled the moment she found out she booked the part, saying she was at home when she got the call from her reps. "I was laying down and my body jumped up in command, present with my phone. And I was like, 'I'm sorry, what?' I just remember really enjoying having that personal moment of, 'Oh my God, did this just happen?' And processing it on my own," González said. "Then, I went to celebrate with a piece of chocolate cake at my favorite restaurant in LA. It's been magical."

Even though González has prior musical experience as a singer, she had to learn to play the drums for the role. "My musicianship was a little dormant because I was so focused on acting, and this role being so musically based, really reinvigorated a light in me, firing me to perform and to drum. It was incredibly challenging because the drums are such a demanding instrument, but I learned so much about myself," she explained. In fact, González's favorite scene to shoot just so happens to be the "Como La Flor" performance, which is featured in the show's teaser trailer. "That experience was incredibly magical. It is a six-minute live performance. I had to learn the 'Como La Flor' album version and 'Como La Flor' live version, and I had to look like a pro. I had to do the live version for the show two and a half months after starting to learn the drums."

As Selena's older sister and drummer, Suzette was a major force in her life, and for González, the pressure of playing a real-life person - and the executive producer of the series - turned out to be her biggest challenge. "I had to meditate early on that and make sure that I cut any unnecessary pressure on myself, because I didn't want anything to get in the way with me doing the best that I did and the best that I could," she added. "So, that was probably the biggest challenge when it came to playing this role was, everyone reminding me that I'm playing one of the bosses. And everyone reminding me that, she's going to see this. And making sure that none of that got in my head, and instead, it went in my heart, mind, and spirit to channel everything for this story."

"It has just been incredible to have so much of my own personal history, my own personal interests, be applied to my professional life in a way that I could give back to her the way that she's given to me."

Selena was one of the biggest (if not the biggest!) Tejano singers of all time, but her life was tragically cut short when she was fatally shot by the president of her fan club and manager of her boutiques, Yolanda Saldívar, in Corpus Christi, TX, on March 31, 1995. Being that González was and continues to be a fan of Selena, getting to play Suzette is more than just a role to her. "To say I'm a huge fan of Selena is an understatement. I am such a devoted fan. I was following her before she even was a mainstream, Mexican popular icon. I was following her with my mom when she was appearing on Sábado Gigante and Siempre en Domingo," she explained. "My mom already knew that this girl was about to be a huge star, so we watched those shows together. She handed me the Amor Prohibido album. I remember putting it in my CD stereo back in the day and dancing in the merits of songs that I really had no life experience to be singing about, but I felt those vibes and felt alive, vibrant, sassy, and fun - being a young little Mexican girl, listening to a Mexican girl producing such amazing music."

Given the major influence Selena had on González's life, her unexpected death hit her pretty hard. "The year she passed, I just was in disbelief and in denial," she said. "And then the following year, my brother unfortunately passed away. And then the year after that, the [Selena] movie came out, so I really grieved with the family. I grieved Selena, I grieved my brother all at the same time. So, I've really been attached to her in a very personal way. It has just been incredible to have so much of my own personal history, my own personal interests, be applied to my professional life in a way that I could give back to her the way that she's given to me."

A 2019 USC study found that Latinx characters make up less than five percent of Hollywood speaking roles. Being Mexican herself, González feels "immensely proud" to offer more Latinx representation on TV through her role. "I am incredibly aware of our statistics and our representation . . . so to have such a strong role in 2020 is incredible to show that we have stories to tell and that our stories are valued and that you're going to love them and you've been missing out," González explained. "I'm not only representing for the little girls watching me now, for the actresses that are alongside me, the artists that are females that are alongside me right now, but for the future actresses that can do more speaking roles and change those statistics even further."

While the real-life Suzette is heavily involved with the series (along with Selena's father Abraham Quintanilla Jr.), González has yet to officially meet her in person, but they have talked about getting together in the future. "We have connected in some way through social media, and it's been beautiful," she gushed. "The first time that I heard from her, I cried. We're going to meet soon. And I'm very, very, very excited to really come to that moment and be very present and honor it, and finally, truly get to meet her as opposed to us obviously wanting to connect."

Selena: The Series - which premieres on Dec. 4 - will chronicle Selena's impressive rise to fame, as well as all the tough decisions her family made to help her achieve her dreams. The biggest takeaway González hopes viewers learn is to "be a light when the going gets rough." "I hope that they take away to always believe the impossible is possible," she added. "I hope they take away that Selena left her mark and her legacy will live on forever. If you keep sharing the story of a girl who had a dream and even posthumously made it come true, that's the power of spirit and that's the power of positivity and hard work that you can see in Selena."

BRB, Dunking These New Amaretto Hot Chocolate Milano Cookies in a Steaming Cup of Cocoa

True fans of fall know that pumpkin spice season is still going strong no matter what the weather tells us. (See: pumpkin spice cookies, pumpkin spice cold brew, and pumpkin spice hot chocolate.) But I'm definitely down to take a break from the cinnamon and nutmeg if it means making room for Pepperidge Farm's new Amaretto Hot Cocoa Flavored Milano cookies. Booze? Chocolate? And cookies? I mean, it's not like I needed another excuse to sit in front of the TV and catch up on reality shows while munching on snacks, but I'll take it!

Just like the spiked hot chocolate they're named after, the cookies are made with rich dark chocolate and a layer of almond-flavored amaretto cream, and I can already imagine dunking one in a homemade cup of cocoa. Some people have already spotted the cookies on store shelves, but they won't make their official debut until early November, when they'll be available nationwide at stores like Target in 7-ounce bags for $4. In the meantime, take a closer look at the boozy chocolate cookies here.

After We Collided: If History Repeats Itself, This Is When the Movie Could Hit Netflix

After We Collided is the continuation of Tessa (Josephine Langford) and Hardin's (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) saga, which can be found in Anna Todd's bestselling After series. The second installment of the film franchise premiered on-demand on Oct. 23, and naturally, fans want to know when the movie will be available to stream on Netflix. As of now, the streaming giant hasn't announced any plans to add the film to its lineup, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't in the future.

As you may recall, After originally premiered in April 2019, but it wasn't until six months later that it made its way to Netflix. If history repeats itself, that would put After We Collided on Netflix's list of new movies and TV shows for April 2021.

Who Is Sarah Levy Dating? She's in a Serious Relationship

Though Schitt's Creek fans are likely aware that Eugene Levy and Daniel Levy (aka Johnny and David Rose) are father and son IRL, you may not realize that another member of the Levy family is also part of the cast. Café Tropical waitress Twyla Sands is played by Eugene Levy's daughter, Sarah Levy, who also appeared in the 2011's Larry Crowne. Though not much is known about the actress' past romantic history, we do know that she's currently dating actor and producer Graham Outerbridge, who has appeared on The Britishes, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Law & Order, among other TV shows and movies.

Sarah made her first appearance on Graham's Instagram grid in May 2018, when he posted a solo pic of her while on vacation together in Bermuda. A month later, Sarah posted a cute photo of herself and Graham in Lake Placid. Since then, the couple has gone to Italy, adopted a pup named Georgie, and shown each other plenty of social media love. In April 2020, Graham even posted a sweet ode to his GF in honor of the final episode of Schitt's Creek. "Words can't describe how proud I am of this wonderful woman," he wrote. "She's the most talented and graceful person I've met, and I'm luckier than I could ever imagine! I love you @sarahplevy ! Twyla was such a gift!"

In August 2020, Sarah took to IG to wish Graham a happy birthday. "Happy happy happiest birthday to the best dang partner a girl could ever ask for," she wrote. "Guess I did something right in a past life." The most notable part of the picture: she appears to be wearing a big sparkler on her left ring finger. The two have yet to announce an engagement, but we have a feeling these lovebirds are in it for the long-run.

Why Eboni K. Williams Joining The Real Housewives of New York Is a Huge Deal For Bravo

American attorney and television host Eboni K. Williams will be joining the cast of The Real Housewives of New York for season 13 in 2021, making her the show's first Black cast member. Williams follows in the stilettoed footsteps of several other Black women in a long line of trailblazers who have diversified a Bravo series, including those of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Garcelle Beauvais. It's not Williams's mere entrance to the Real Housewives franchise that should earn buzz, but the significance of seeing a Black face on the notoriously white New York spinoff.

For the majority of the early 2000s, the Real Housewives franchise centered around predominately white women from affluent communities. Watch The Real Housewives of Orange County and witness a sea of thin, blonde women. Find a little more diversity in The Real Housewives of New Jersey, with a few more (white) cast members sporting black and brown hair.

As for Black representation, the Real Housewives franchise casts the majority of its Black stars down south. The Real Housewives of Atlanta was the only Real Housewives series to feature more than one Black cast member up until the release of the The Real Housewives of Potomac in 2016. Williams casting brings about an opportunity to highlight positive aspects of Black culture. It's especially important for Bravo to champion Black lives after firing several of its white reality stars for various racist tweets or racially motivated transgressions this past year.

"This franchise historically has not had a Black lens and now it will for the first time in 13 years," Williams told Essence. As an unmarried woman without children, she represents a new type of "housewife." Williams holds a law degree from Loyola University New Orleans, was a correspondent for CBS News, and currently hosts the program State of the Culture on Revolt TV. Seeing an example of an educated, Black woman juggling the intricacies of family life, friendships, and a high stress career goes against stereotypes often affiliated with Black women on reality television. Her casting paves the way for other women of color to join other Bravo shows as well.

To some, Williams serves as a role model and representation of Black excellence, affluence, and overall success. To others, she is a reminder of the importance of breaking cultural barriers in the entertainment industry. When young women across the country sit down to watch Real Housewives they won't just see a group of similar faces; they will see women from all backgrounds doing more than being mothers. Hopefully, Williams will become one of many Black women who is welcomed to the Real Housewives world with open arms. Like many of the women who came before her, Eboni K. Williams is much more than a housewife - she is a hero.

Check Out the Terrifyingly-Good Soundtrack of Lovecraft Country's First Season

What's an HBO show without its expertly put together soundtrack? Misha Green's book to TV adaptation of Lovecraft Country may be a sci-fi horror series with all sorts of ghoulish monsters lurking in every scene, but that doesn't mean it can't also have some of our favorite tunes bumping in the background! The show takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, which heavily influences the mix of old-school and modern music that makes up the soundtrack.

Few shows can feature songs from both Tierra Whack and Etta James in the same episode and have it make perfect sense, but Lovecraft Country makes it work. While we await news on whether the show will be bringing us a second season full of old-school jams and modern hits, check out the music featured on the show ahead!

The Bachelorette: We'd Like to Talk to Whoever Grossly Age-Shamed Clare in the Season Trailer

Season 16 of The Bachelorette has officially begun, and it's already providing Bachelor Nation with plenty of drama. We were anticipating shenanigans, thanks to the reports of Clare Crawley dropping out a mere 12 days into filming and Tayshia Adams stepping in to replace her as the lead, but a teaser for the upcoming weeks shows that Clare's time as the Bachelorette doesn't go down as gently into the night as one would have assumed.

The teaser is full of brief snippets of Clare and contestant Dale Moss's romance going into full bloom along with shots of the other suitors starting to realize that their chance at love with the 39-year-old hairstylist is going down the drain. But the juiciest moment - other than Chris Harrison delivering the most damning line to Clare, saying, "Congratulations, you've just blown up The Bachelorette" - happens around the 1:19 mark. Clare is seen visibly upset, and even though we don't see the kerfuffle that leads to her anger or who it's with, we do see her heatedly calling someone, "Sick! Sick! Sick!" Then, addressing the camera, she says, "I don't care what I've done. To sit there and say 'You're the oldest Bachelorette' guess what? I'm the oldest Bachelorette that's 39, that's standing here, that's single, because I didn't settle for men like that!"

Go ahead, girl, speak your truth! And we all know that age is nothing but a number (when we're talking about consenting adults), but it's obvious that whoever was mentioning Clare's age wasn't doing so as a compliment. At least, she definitely didn't take it that way. A few more scenes go by until we see the clip that's most likely connected to Clare's outrage, a man in a blue suit yelling, "I expected way more from the oldest Bachelorette." It doesn't take a lot of context clues to put those two reactions together.

Now, the big question we have is who was the guy bold enough to age-shame the woman he supposedly came on TV to find love with? We already know all the guys it couldn't be, so we're working with a finite list of possibilities. If we're going to judge by first impressions, we'd have to put our money on one particular suitor: Yosef Aborady.

The 30-year-old medical-device salesman from Daphne, Alabama already got a bit of a rocky start in the premiere of the season and reports say that his exit will be even more heated. Of course, it's all speculation so it could be any of the guys we've already grown to like, but we have a feeling we're right about this one. There's still plenty of Bachelorette to go before we find out the truth, though, so buckle up, folks, it's going to be a wild ride!

You're Having a Hard Time Placing Emily in Paris's Randy Because He's in Everything

After watching episode four of Emily in Paris, do you just have that nagging notion you've seen rich hotelier Randy Zimmer before? Emily courts him (and his incredible suit) at an art exhibition for Savoir, the French marketing company she works at, and presents a perfect elevator pitch for creating a signature scent. In between the champagne, Chanel bags, romance, and modern art, we were already feeling a bit woozy, but not exactly knowing where we had seen the actor that plays Randy – that was killing us. Eion Bailey is not just a total heartthrob, but has acted in roles we would have never guessed. And when we figured it out, well, we were shook.

So where have you seen Eion Bailey before?

Eion Bailey is an American actor who has been formally acting since 1997, starring in almost 50 different roles in TV shows and movies throughout his career. So, where in the world have you seen those deep blue eyes before? It may be hard to guess because he's seriously been everywhere.

Bailey started out with a role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, playing Kyle DuFours, a bully at Sunnydale High and one of the members of "The Pack." If that doesn't clear up your faint memory of his gorgeous face, then you could have possibly seen him in an array of places . . . as in probably the most diverse range of roles ever. Bailey's acting credits include Dawson's Creek, where he plays Billy Konrad, a New York music producer, in Almost Famous, where he can be found playing Jann Wenner, the founder of Rolling Stone magazine, Center Stage, the ballet drama where he plays Jim, AKA the cutest boyfriend in history to ballet dancer Maureen, and even in Fight Club (we're shook!) where he plays Ricky, one of the youngest members.

After realizing Bailey's breadth of work, it's easy to see why his face seemed so familiar after watching Emily convince Randy with her killer charm and wit (and yeah, outfits). Can't get enough of the tousled curls? You can find him in the upcoming miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand, a show about an apocalyptic world that's a far cry from croissants and wine.

Swooning Over Gabriel and Mathieu? We Debate Which Emily in Paris Romance Makes the Cut

If you've ever seen a show created by Darren Star, you already have a pretty good idea of what the romance situation shapes up to be on Emily in Paris. In season one, we meet Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), an ambitious twenty-something marketing executive from Chicago who unexpectedly lands her dream job in Paris when her company acquires a French luxury marketing company. Earnest Emily - clumsily offending every French resident she comes across - is tasked with revamping the company's social media strategy into something more friendly for American audiences, which leads to a lot of butting heads between her and her coworkers. Luckily, her love life thrives in France - by which I mean, of course, that it quickly becomes a tangled hot mess.

By the first season's finale, Emily's romantic mishaps leave her caught in the web of two very suave European gentlemen: Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), the hot chef neighbor who happens to be dating one of her only two friends in Paris, and Mathieu Cadault (Charles Martins), the hot businessman who runs part of his uncle Pierre's couture house. From those descriptions, you might already have made your decision on which man you think sounds better for young Emily's heart (congratulations, you've rightly chosen my side), but as we all know, love is always so much more complicated than it seems! With that in mind, two POPSUGAR editors have come together to settle the Gabriel-Emily-Mathieu affair like civilized women and debate which duo reigns supreme. We both agree that Emily doesn't need a man, but it's a romantic comedy and we love love, so we're also ready to defend our favorite pairing!

Kelsie Gibson: Throughout the first season, Emily in Paris follows some classic romantic comedy tropes, and Emily and Gabriel's first interaction is no exception. Emily accidentally mistaking Gabriel's apartment for her own is the perfect meet-cute, and from the moment they lock eyes, it's clear they have a connection. As they stumble through their first conversation together, I was blushing right along with them. Their longing looks basically signify that something big is about to happen with these two, and this is just the beginning. As a huge fan of rom-coms, I live for these grand, romantic, and sometimes dramatic love stories. Would I want a relationship like this in real life? No, but this is fiction and sometimes we need a little escapism in our everyday life.

Just like any good rom-com, Emily and Gabriel's relationship is a slow burn as they constantly try to figure out the timing. When she meets Gabriel, Emily is unavailable, but when she finally breaks up with her boyfriend in Chicago (honestly, that was for the best because he was the worst), we find out that Gabriel is actually in a relationship. Even though I know they can't be together, that didn't stop me from shipping them. Out of all of her romantic love interests, Gabriel is, without a doubt, the most charming - and not just because he's easy on the eyes. Compared to the rest of Emily's suitors (who are completely awful, BTW), he seems to genuinely care for Emily as a person. They have such great chemistry from the very start. It's easy for them - that is, until it gets very complicated.

Mekishana Pierre: I am all about the meet-cute and sizzling connections - I just don't understand why we can't have that and healthy relationships at the same time! Emily has a habit of falling fast and hard when she meets a man that she's attracted to, and with Mathieu, it was different. There was the initial attraction, but because they're essentially coworkers, they don't immediately act on it. Mathieu admires Emily's work, her ideas, and her creativity, encouraging her over-the-top ideas when others would scoff at them, and ultimately, trusts her with his family's business.

"I enjoy indulging in the grand, romantic, and dramatic love stories, but I also appreciate the love stories where people just appreciate learning one another."

When they eventually fall into each others' arms, it's not the fireworks display that Emily and Gabriel's nighttime tryst is, instead, it's the warm burn of a campfire, and I like that! Mathieu is a grown man pursuing Emily, he isn't her dirty little secret, and he's taking his time. He's whisking her away for a celebratory trip, not flipping cheater omelets in his apartment. I enjoy indulging in the grand, romantic, and dramatic love stories, but I also appreciate the love stories where people just appreciate learning one another and their troubles don't mean their relationship is toxic. And let's be honest, there will never be a point in time when Emily and Gabriel's relationship can get over how it started, which is while both of them were seeing other people.

Kelsie: Out of all the guys Emily dates in the first season, Mathieu is the most forgettable to me (I literally forgot his name when I was writing this). It's not that he's boring per se, but he and Emily just don't have any sparks. After all the bad guys she has dated, I get that he's the safer bet. He treats her well, he's successful and wants to whisk her off on romantic vacations at a moment's notice, but even Emily has her doubts. Are they compatible? Sure. But will they last in the long run? My guess is no. In the words of Blair Waldorf, "People don't write sonnets about being compatible, or novels about shared life goals and stimulating conversation. The great loves are the crazy ones."

Mekishana: I love the Queen B as much as everyone else, but I would never, ever, ever take relationship advice from her real or fictional!! Her most lasting relationship is the most toxic of them all and that quote was what she said to justify it. (Team Dair forever!) I'm woman enough to agree that Emily and Gabriel have great chemistry, but as soon as she finds out he's dating Camille, it becomes entangled in the forbidden nature of their relationship. Any romanticism gets sullied by how Emily not only kisses Gabriel again, but also how Gabriel seemingly doesn't care about how Camille would feel about him pursuing a friendship with a woman he desires. When Emily and Gabriel make love in the season finale, it's two people knowing they're doing something wrong, even with Gabriel and Camille being "over." Emily is still seeing Mathieu and is also friends with Camille, it's breaking all the rules of friendship there could ever be!

Kelsie: I get that the whole Gabriel-Camille-Emily love triangle is messy. Emily getting together with Camille's boyfriend is breaking some serious girl code. Honestly, I think what I hate most about the love triangle isn't that Gabriel and Emily can't be together, but that Gabriel pretty much led her on. Maybe he was just being nice to her in the beginning, but that doesn't mean he has to let her shower in his apartment? That being said, I also don't think Gabriel should stay with Camille if he honestly doesn't love her anymore. It's not fair for either of them. And if he and Emily think they have something real, they should let Camille know that as well. Maybe they should have waited to spend the night together until after they actually told her? But hey, this is TV and the writers had to leave room for another season.

"I want to see more of her wearing cute clothes, getting less ignorant of French culture, and basking in the joys of having a hot, rich, older boyfriend who treats her well without causing drama."

Mekishana: See, I don't even believe that Emily and Gabriel really have anything special. What do they even know about each other outside of the facts that they're attracted to one another and enjoy good food? Yes, Gabriel cares about Emily and they were good friends for a minute there, but if we're being honest, I think Emily would see the most growth in a relationship with Mathieu than Gabriel. And not just career-wise! Mathieu finds Emily charming, but he also challenges her while encouraging her to learn more about French culture (which she desperately needs to). The older man is steadfast and established, he doesn't need, he wants her - and he doesn't have baggage that will ruin her friendships! We romanticize dramatic relationships so much, we forget how exhausting they are. And Emily and Gabriel have all the ingredients to be super exhausting.

Kelsie: If we're being completely honest, maybe the best thing Emily needs to do is be single for a while and figure out what she truly wants. If the show does get renewed for a second season, I'd love to see her excel at work, have fun adventures with Mindy, and just enjoy Paris without all the romance drama. Maybe after a whole season of self-discovery she'll eventually find her way back to Gabriel? Isn't that the perfect romantic comedy ending anyways?

Mekishana: It depends on your perfect romantic comedy! When I imagine Emily's future seasons, I don't want to spend episodes watching the fallout of her sneaking around with Gabriel and attempting to get Camille to forgive her (you know that's where we're headed). I want to see more of her wearing cute clothes, getting less ignorant of French culture, and basking in the joys of having a hot, rich, older boyfriend who treats her well without causing drama. Her work life is dramatic enough! But either way, just like every other Darren Star creation, I'm going to tune in to see what happens next!
