Why India Oxenberg Didn't Participate in The Vow: "I Just Wasn't Ready to Speak Out"

Image Source: YouTube user Entertainment Tonight

Similar to HBO's The Vow, Starz's latest docuseries, Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult, sheds light on the disturbing world of NXIVM and its founder Keith Raniere through the eyes of former member India Oxenberg. However, Oxenberg wasn't personally involved with The Vow, like she is with Seduced, and the reason for that is simply because she just wasn't ready to tell her story. The Vow first premiered on Aug. 23, whereas, Seduced just debuted it's first episode on Oct. 18.

"For a long time, I just wasn't ready to speak out. I needed to take care of myself and prioritize my own healing and recovery and I was kind of turned off by the media, to be honest," Oxenberg recently said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "I actually got introduced to the producers and directors on Seduced, and they explained to me that they had vision for a different type of documentary that was female-focused, created by a female team of filmmakers, and that it was going to go deep into corrosion and high-control groups."

Oxenberg fled NXIVM in June 2018 after Raniere was arrested on multiple charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. She is now engaged to chef Patrick D'Ignazio and is currently working on a book about her experiences with NXIVM.

Why Eboni K. Williams Joining The Real Housewives of New York Is a Huge Deal For Bravo

American attorney and television host Eboni K. Williams will be joining the cast of The Real Housewives of New York for season 13 in 2021, making her the show's first Black cast member. Williams follows in the stilettoed footsteps of several other Black women in a long line of trailblazers who have diversified a Bravo series, including those of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Garcelle Beauvais. It's not Williams's mere entrance to the Real Housewives franchise that should earn buzz, but the significance of seeing a Black face on the notoriously white New York spinoff.

For the majority of the early 2000s, the Real Housewives franchise centered around predominately white women from affluent communities. Watch The Real Housewives of Orange County and witness a sea of thin, blonde women. Find a little more diversity in The Real Housewives of New Jersey, with a few more (white) cast members sporting black and brown hair.

As for Black representation, the Real Housewives franchise casts the majority of its Black stars down south. The Real Housewives of Atlanta was the only Real Housewives series to feature more than one Black cast member up until the release of the The Real Housewives of Potomac in 2016. Williams casting brings about an opportunity to highlight positive aspects of Black culture. It's especially important for Bravo to champion Black lives after firing several of its white reality stars for various racist tweets or racially motivated transgressions this past year.

"This franchise historically has not had a Black lens and now it will for the first time in 13 years," Williams told Essence. As an unmarried woman without children, she represents a new type of "housewife." Williams holds a law degree from Loyola University New Orleans, was a correspondent for CBS News, and currently hosts the program State of the Culture on Revolt TV. Seeing an example of an educated, Black woman juggling the intricacies of family life, friendships, and a high stress career goes against stereotypes often affiliated with Black women on reality television. Her casting paves the way for other women of color to join other Bravo shows as well.

To some, Williams serves as a role model and representation of Black excellence, affluence, and overall success. To others, she is a reminder of the importance of breaking cultural barriers in the entertainment industry. When young women across the country sit down to watch Real Housewives they won't just see a group of similar faces; they will see women from all backgrounds doing more than being mothers. Hopefully, Williams will become one of many Black women who is welcomed to the Real Housewives world with open arms. Like many of the women who came before her, Eboni K. Williams is much more than a housewife - she is a hero.

Blackpink's Origin Story Started Long Before the Group's Public Debut in 2016

It's hard to believe that the K-pop girl group Blackpink has only been around for a few years, but Blackpink actually started much earlier than its public debut. Netflix's new documentary Blackpink: Light Up the Sky follows the mega-popular group from the earliest beginnings up to their superstardom, revealing how the band came to be and how long it took for them to come together.

Blackpink's story started back in 2010, when the individual members of the group auditioned for YG Entertainment, according to a 2019 Billboard profile. YG is a major firm in the K-pop industry, which recruits young musicians to become "trainees" in a highly structured system that eventually turns them into "idols," or highly produced pop stars with a particular image curated by the entertainment company. The members of Blackpink all auditioned individually and eventually made it through several rounds to join YG.

Their next step was going through a rigorous academy, which involved intense schedules and daily training in music, dance, and more, in order to determine which trainees would be selected to become full-fledged music acts as organized by the company. They all trained for several years between their initial recruitment and Blackpink's eventual debut in 2016. It was during this phase of isolated, intense training that the four future bandmates met and bonded. "Jennie would speak English to me, and Jisoo helped me out with my Korean," Lisa, who is from Thailand, told Billboard, while Rosé recalled a late-night jam session where "we just clicked."

It wasn't until 2016, after years of rumors, that YG finally announced the formation of Blackpink and began revealing its members to the public. On June 29 of that year, Korean entertainment websites such as Naver formally broke the news that Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa would be the complete band, while also officially debuting the "Blackpink" name. Only a few months later, their first single album, Square One, was released with the songs "Whistle" and "Boombayah." Since then, their careers have taken off massively, becoming an international hit and one of the most popular music acts in the world. It's no wonder, then, that Netflix chose them as the subject of their first K-pop program.

You can find out more about the personal stories behind each of the four women's journeys in Blackpink: Light Up the Sky, now streaming on Netflix!

Can We Just Turn Brandy's BBMAs Performance Into a Whole Concert?

The Billboard Music Awards went down in Los Angeles on Wednesday, and it was a big night for Brandy! The 41-year-old '90s icon performed for the first time ever at the ceremony, and we're just wondering what took so long? Brandy treated us to a soulful performance of her hits "Borderline" and "Almost Doesn't Count," as well as "No Tomorrow" featuring Ty Dolla $ign. The entire thing was so soothing and nostalgic, we didn't want it to end.

Brandy's Billboard debut comes three months after the release of her seventh studio album, B7. She cowrote and coproduced the project, which was a first for her. While speaking with Billboard magazine recently, Brandy explained that it was "really important for me to just discover that part of myself." She added, "I was working with some amazing people like DJ Camper and LaShawn Daniels, who helped guide me, and it was a way for me to really use music to heal and be therapeutic. It felt different than anything that I had ever done, and it's something that I felt like I needed to do." Watch Brandy's performance above.

Will Smith's Family Received an Award From Robin Williams's Kids, in Memory of Their Dad

Robin Williams's kids, Zachary, Cody, and Zelda, are honoring their father's memory by continuing to spread joy and honor those who do the same. On Oct. 5, Will Smith posted a YouTube video with his wife, Jada, and kids Trey, Willow, and Jaden (on FaceTime) as they became the fourth recipients of the Robin Williams Legacy of Laughter Award. "From one genie family to another," Zachary said in his opening message, applauding the Smiths.

The Robin Williams Legacy of Laughter Award, in partnership with nonprofit organization Bring Change to Mind, is given to noteworthy individuals in the entertainment world who exemplify service and embody the "best sparks" of the late actor.
