Tips for Making Your Workout More Challenging When You Have Just One Set of Dumbbells

Working out at home has its perks, from convenience to comfort, but one potential shortcoming is a lack of equipment. Whether you are working with minimal storage space or don't want to spend money on new fitness gear right now, you may find yourself feeling stuck in a rut with your same old single set of dumbbells.

Certified personal trainer Alexia Clark knows how you feel, and she has a few ideas for how to challenge yourself even if you only have one set of weights. These ideas also may come in handy if you have another, heavier set of dumbbells, but don't feel ready to graduate to that next level. She shared her three-step advice in an Instagram video, demonstrating each technique with a dumbbell front arm raise.

The first way to add an extra challenge to your strength training is "time under tension." In the video, Clark holds the dumbbells at her sides and lifts them up for three seconds, then down for three seconds. According to Clark's Instagram caption, "this forces your muscles to work harder and optimizes muscular strength, endurance and growth."

Next is adding a pulse - the short range of motion keeps the muscles contracted, Clark explains.

And finally, add a negative. "Negative training makes a deeper inroad during each repetition," she writes, "which stimulates natural muscle-building growth hormone."

Peloton Just Announced the Release Date For Its Smaller, Less Expensive Tread

The Peloton fitness program seems more popular than ever, as many are increasingly making the switch to at-home workouts. But the hefty price tag of its top-of-the-line machinery - the Bike, the Bike+, and the Tread+ - may understandably deter those who are trying to decide whether or not home-workout equipment is a worthwhile investment.

Now, however, an exciting new product launch might make the beloved exercise brand more accessible. This week, Peloton announced the details for the Peloton Tread, a smaller, lower-priced version of the Tread+.

The Tread will be available for purchase in March of 2021 for $2,495, compared to $4,295 for the original Tread+ treadmill.

This is admittedly still a steep price to pay for a treadmill, but at nearly half the cost of the Tread+, you are still getting the Peloton perks of an HD touchscreen and sound system to stream classes that will transport you from your living room to a high-end fitness studio. The cost includes delivery fees, though it does not include the $39/month subscription for unlimited classes.

Aside from the price, the main difference between the Tread and the Tread+ is that the former has a traditional treadmill belt, whereas the latter has a shock-absorbing slat belt. If you are already used to running on a regular treadmill, the Tread belt will not be any different.

The reduced size is also a big change, making it easier to find room for the machine in your home. The dimensions are 68 inches long by 33 inches wide by 62 inches high - smaller in length than most couches. The Tread+, meanwhile, measured 72.5 inches long by 32.5 inches wide by 72 inches tall.

Despite these differences, the Tread actually still has many of the same features that sets the Tread+ apart from other treadmills on the market.

In addition to the touch screen and speakers, there are user-friendly control knobs and jump buttons to easily add speed or incline. Both machines also forgo the clunky plastic shroud typically found at the front of treadmills, contributing to a sleeker look and greater range of motion.

Of course, there are lots of factors to consider when making such a significant purchase, but there's plenty of time until March to think about whether the Peloton Tread is right for you and your fitness goals. In the meantime, you can try out the new treadmill for yourself in Peloton stores across the US.

Stretch Out Tight Wrists Before Yoga With This 10-Minute Arianna Elizabeth Video

Stretching is an important part of exercise that can protect you from injury and improve your flexibility. However, sometimes people focus on stretching certain parts of their bodies, like their backs and legs, and end up neglecting others, like their wrists.

Between working out and typing on a laptop for an extended period of time, the activities you may engage in on a daily basis can leave your wrists feeling super sore. If that sounds familiar, there's no need to worry. Arianna Elizabeth, a fitness influencer and certified yoga instructor, has a wrist-stretching warmup that might help.

The stretching sequence in the 10-minute YouTube video is meant to be used as a warmup before a yoga session. "It is super important to definitely stretch your wrists out before you start," Elizabeth explains in the video. "Especially if you're not super familiar with Down Dog, sometimes it can feel like there's a lot of pressure on your wrists."

For people with weaker wrists in particular, which Elizabeth stresses is totally normal, warming up with some stretches is a key step in strengthening them.

Elizabeth talks viewers through exercises such as wrist circles, flexing your wrists, and rolling your wrists out with your fingers interlaced. Meet Kakana: a Fitness Platform Featuring Workouts Tailored For People With Disabilities

You don't have to do much searching through popular fitness platforms to find that they are not made with the disability community in mind. That's where Kakana comes in. Launched on Oct. 27, it has live and on-demand classes in strength, meditation, yoga, stretching, cardio, and cross-cycling led by both able-bodied and disabled athletes and trainers.

Kakana founder Matthew Ney told POPSUGAR that he learned how important accessibility was through creating his company Fitbound out of college, which concentrated on short bursts of exercise kids could do during school. "That led me to start asking questions about what was out there," he said, adding that he shifted away from education and wanted to focus on making exercise accessible and more inclusive for the rest of the population.

In June, Kakana launched a beta class with a handful of participants who took cross-cycling. It's similar to any cycling class except you utilize a hand cycle or hand ergometer. The goal, Ney said, is having cycling be fully accessible to people all abilities because you can put it on the ground and use it with your legs, too. Then, Ney expanded into other ability-inclusive workout sessions before Kakana's launch at the end of October. As of now, most of the classes are 20 to 30 minutes long.

A monthly subscription costs $15, but you can try out a seven-day free trial or select the two-month-free offer on the Kakana website. So far, there are 10 live Zoom classes per week, which are transferred on demand permanently within seven days via the Kakana website. (Ney noted you can turn your video off during the live sessions if you want to.) There are also virtual "locker rooms" 10 minutes before each live class for participants to sign on early and get to know each other. Ney said there's time to additionally stay on after the class to give feedback and ask questions.

Team USA para-lifter Blaze Foster is a cross-cycling and strength instructor for Kakana, and he told POPSUGAR that, as someone with a physical disability, he's well aware of how easily you can feel alone when it comes to bettering yourself. A platform like Kakana is very important, he stated, especially for those with disabilities. "I'm a big, firm believer in health is wealth, and you really want to keep yourself healthy both physically and mentally," he said. "Being a part of group fitness is a great way to help you with that aspect of life."

Ney noted that despite the fact that athletes and fitness professionals are on the Kakana roster thus far - yoga instructor Marsha Danzig and trainer Sunny Miller, for example - he aims to expand the Kakana instructor lineup soon, and anyone with or without disabilities can apply since the training regimen is intensive. "I looked to find instructors that would engage and draw me in and be a leader for accessible fitness," he explained.

"When you talk about fitness alone, it is something that pushes you forward and helps your mind, your body, your soul," Ney concluded. "Let's make something that represents that and represents individuals with disabilities and without disabilities. I think you can do that by creating something people want to be a part of."

Jeanette Jenkins has trained celebrities like P!nk, Mindy Kaling, and Alicia Keys - and thanks to her Instagram workout videos, you can count yourself among her star-studded clientele. Along with motivational quotes and mouth-watering healthy food inspo, the trainer shares fun fitness tutorials showcasing different kinds of workouts regularly. Basically, if you're getting bored of your at-home routine or can't possibly do another crunch, you'll want to give Jenkins a follow.

Her latest post features a 10-exercise bench HIIT workout with pro football player Demarcus Ware. You can follow along solo, or grab a friend and make it a partner workout. Outside of the use of a bench, this high-energy circuit doesn't require any other equipment, but you'll want to give yourself plenty of space to complete it.

Per Jenkins' instructions, you should do 10 to 20 reps of each move, and 2 to 3 sets of the full circuit. Check out the moves below, and remember to take rest breaks whenever you need them.

Here's What the "Fittest Woman on Earth" Eats in a Day (Spoiler: It's a LOT of Carbs!)

Tia-Clair Toomey has won the CrossFit Games for her fourth year in a row, and with the title of the "Fittest Woman on Earth," aren't you curious to know what she eats to fuel her workouts? In this video she shows us exactly what she eats in a day, and includes the macros for each meal that she calculates using My Fitness Pal.

When Toomey fuels up before training in the morning, her breakfast consists of oatmeal with berries and a bagel with peanut butter and banana - about 430 calories and 100 grams of carbs. She said she understands that it seems like a lot of carbs for one meal, but that's because she'll be exerting a lot of energy during her training. After breakfast, she likes to take her vitamins, such as omega-3s, a multivitamin, probiotics, zinc, CBD, and ACV gummies, on a full stomach.

Toomey also fuels up during her workout, because she's often at the gym for four to six hours. She'll have a Fuel for Fire pouch, fruit, or a tiny meal. Within 30 to 60 minutes after her training, she has a shake with protein and carbs to help with her recovery, made with a scoop of 1st Phorm Loop D Fruit protein powder. It's her favorite flavor because "it tastes like Fruit Loops - it's amazing," she said.

Lunch is a salad with apple, avocado, and salmon, which is about 300 calories. Guess what's for dinner? A 700-calorie Chipotle bowl with chicken, black beans, white rice, guacamole, salsa, cheese, and lettuce. After dinner she enjoys some warm, sleepy tea with a protein bar.

Toomey's daily goal is about 2,500 calories (recommended by her coach), but she follows how she feels and will eat less if she feels satisfied, or more if she's tired or hungry. She explains that she tried saving her macros for the evening so she could eat "whatever junk food I could," like chocolate and candy, but after three days, that took a toll on her training, and Toomey said, "I was crumbling." So she focuses on including healthy, wholesome, low-calorie foods like veggies, she said, "to feel like I'm eating a lot, but really I'm not."

On the day the above video was filmed, Toomey's macros were 261 grams of carbs, 69 grams of fat, and 134 grams of protein, which was in the ballpark of the macros she tries to reach when she's competing. She said the most crucial thing with nutrition is to listen to your body, and change things if they're not working or you're not feeling well. She hopes sharing what she eats in a day leading up to a competition will be helpful to others.

Chris Hemsworth's Mini "Meditations" Are Both Soothing and Utterly Hilarious

Allow us to make your day by introducing Chris Hemsworth's latest gift to humanity: "Affirmations That Positively, Absolutely, Probably (Most Likely) Won't Make Your 2020 Worse." This mini-series of mini-meditations combines Chris Hemsworth's charming, soothing voice, his dry sense of humor, and the relatable problems so many of us have when we try meditation, especially with all the thoughts and distractions of the current moment.

Each "affirmation" is basically a hilarious, one-minute-long meditation, with lines like "Allow my soothing baritones to wash over you," titles like "Inhale possibility, not bugs," and settings that include the bottom of a pool, where Hemsworth is holding his breath through the meditation (so relaxing!) while his son cheerfully kicks across the screen. The affirmations are here to promote Hemsworth's health and fitness app, Centr, which has actual meditations on it. And even though we know these clips are a bit tongue-in-cheek, are we alone in thinking they're still pretty soothing?
