Secrets of Being a Fitness Instructor, Straight From an Indoor Cycling Teacher

When I decided to audition for becoming an indoor cycling instructor over three years ago, it wasn't about the money - it was about the lifestyle and community. Who wouldn't love to work where yoga pants are the office dress code and sweaty postcycle brunch is a regular thing? But as my career progressed, I realized - dang, this is hard work!

The truth is, there is a lot more to being a fitness instructor than just getting paid to work out. Whether you're thinking of instructing or just want a peep into what your fitness guru really does, here's a look at what goes on behind the studio scenes.

It's More Than Just a Class

While a class may only last 45-60 minutes, instructors often spend hours outside of the studio crafting the experience. "It takes dedicated time and effort to sequence a class and prepare the playlist," says CorePower Yoga instructor Janine Narvaez. Creating a routine and curating playlists, mingling with students, and setting up or cleaning the space are all a part of the job.

You Sweat a Lot

Teaching multiple classes a day (and squeezing in a workout for yourself) makes for many sweaty, spandex-filled laundry loads. When your yoga pants have their own dresser, you've forgotten how to fasten anything other than a sports bra, and you carry bags on bags everywhere you go, you know you're a pro. And with all this sweating comes another focus: personal care. Because of how active instructors are, preventing injury and training to keep up their own strength and stamina is key. Injuries, surgeries, and illness don't just force you to rest - they pause your career.

Looks Matter

The fitness industry is vastly entrenched in the importance of looks. Because of this, there's often pressure to fit the mold and body shaming if you don't. "Whether we like it or not, the fitness industry is focused on physical appearance and is sex-saturated, but I like to use this as a challenge to promote reality to my riders," says Angie Afman, lead instructor at Rush Cycle. Instead, learning to portray a balanced lifestyle can be even more motivating. "I don't meal prep, I eat pizza weekly, and when I'm craving a cookie, I let myself have one. People need to be given permission to not be perfect, and this applies to diet and exercise as well."

Lead instructor Jessica Forseth of Flywheel agrees. "I also embrace what makes me unique. My strength, my own journey, [and] being relatable for my clients all set me apart and help me challenge the stereotypical fitness instructor image." This pressure can also differ between fitness types: "The beauty of teaching yoga is to also be authentic living its practice both on and off the mat. This means discovering and staying curious about your body and giving yourself the grace to be completely yourself, regardless of whatever expectations or stereotypes are a part of the fitness industry," says Janine.

You're Still Human

It's easy to idolize or envy the brave ones leading our daily workouts. But at the end of the day, instructors are humans too, with problems and a life outside of their job like everyone else. "A lot of people view fitness instructors as strong, powerful, put-together figures. However, being an effective fitness instructor requires an insane amount of vulnerability and humility," says Angie. "We bare our souls, speak our hearts, and take risks with our creativity without any guarantee that our clients will receive it or even respond to it."

Much of being an instructor requires a performance mentality, but it can be difficult to be always on. "I am still a student, too," says Janine. "I've fallen on my face, I've crashed into the mirror, and at times I haven't been the most graceful yogi. But that's OK!"

It's Beyond Rewarding

The best part of being a fitness instructor? Knowing you can positively impact lives every day. "I love reminding my students of their worth. Each person who walks in through the door and steps onto their mat is a gem in my eyes," says Janine.

Instructors have an opportunity become a part of their clients' goals and wellness journeys - hearing their stories, both the good and the bad, keeps us going. "Celebrating all of the little successes along the way is what gives me energy! Even more than my triple shots of espresso," says Jessica.

For others, it is passing on their career passion to others. "I find it so rewarding to train instructors," says Angie. "I love what I do and when I get to share that with others, watch their light bulbs go off, and observe them falling in love with teaching in a fresh new way keeps me inspired."

For me, becoming an indoor cycling instructor not only let me make an impact - it helped me discover a strength and love for myself I didn't know existed. Teaching was at the heart of my eating disorder recovery journey, and for that, I will always be grateful.

Watch All the Times Square New Year's Eve Festivities - Including the Ball Drop - Right Here

It's New Year's Eve, and no matter where or how you plan to spend the last day of the year, one thing is for certain: it's time to say goodbye to 2017, and hello to everything that 2018 will bring. And there's no better way to celebrate the good things to come than by watching the legendary New York City festivities that take place in Times Square all evening long. So, we've partnered with the Times Square Alliance to bring you the official live stream of everything – from countdowns to musical performances to the epic ball drop itself – right as it goes down, starting at 3:00 p.m. EST. 3:00 p.m.

The Revelers

Revelers start arriving late in the afternoon on New Year's Eve. By approximately 3:00 p.m. EST, the Bow Tie of Times Square (42nd to 47th Sts. between Broadway and 7th Ave.) is fully closed to traffic. Revelers are directed by the NYPD to gather in separate viewing sections. As one section fills up, the revelers are directed by police to the next viewing section. As the evening progresses, revelers continue to fill the Times Square neighborhood along Broadway and Seventh Avenue moving uptown from 43rd Street to as far as Central Park.

6:00 p.m. to 6:03 p.m.

Lighting and Raising the Times Square New Year's Eve Ball

The celebration begins with the lighting and raising of the New Year's Eve Ball atop One Times Square. The representatives of the Philips Lighting Company flip the giant switch, which lights the New Year's Eve Ball and begins its ascent accompanied by special pyrotechnic effects atop One Times Square.

6:04 p.m. to 6:07 p.m.

Intro of Webcast Host

Allison Hagendorf introduces Jonathan Bennett hosting the worldwide webcast live from the Kiss Stage between 44th and 45th Streets.

6:07 p.m. to 6:21 p.m.

SAFA Chinese Cultural Performance

The Sino-American Friendship Association ("SAFA") presents a spectacular Tongliang Athletics Dragon Dance from Chongqing China to begin the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration. The performance is on the Countdown Stage at Duffy Island between 46th and 47th Streets. The Chinese cultural performance will conclude with red and gold pyrotechnic effects atop One Times Square.

The Tongliang Athletics Dragon Dance is the most famous Chinese dragon dance, hailing from the Tongliang District of Chongqing. This year, a 15-meter-long Athletics Dragon – gold and blue in color and undertaken by eight performers - will come to life in Times Square, depicting the characteristics of "high," "fast," and "strong" to thrill onlookers, presented in partnership with the Sino-American Friendship Association. The dance is the same type performed at the Beijing Olympic games, and its movements are relatively large in magnitude, speed, and difficulty. Dragon dances are often performed during the Chinese New Year to scare away evil spirits and bring in peace.

6:25 p.m.

Times Square 2018 Hats, Balloons, and Scarves

Times Square Alliance sanitation crew clad in bright red uniforms begins to distribute tens of thousands of fun handouts to the Times Square revelers for cheering in the New Year. Planet Fitness is providing festive purple and yellow New Year's Eve hats and purple and yellow balloons tied with gold mylar ribbons, and the Sino-American Friendship Association is providing red scarves.

6:58 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Hourly Countdown with Steve Harvey

As we approach the New Year, Steve Harvey will appear at the Countdown Stage to wish the Times Square revelers "Happy New Year" and lead the 10-second countdown to the 7:00 hour accompanied by colorful pyrotechnic effects atop One Times Square. He will also read several of the Confetti Wishes to be mixed into the confetti release at midnight and share his wish for the New Year.

The lighted ball descends 70 feet in 60 seconds. The ball is a geodesic sphere, 12 feet in diameter, weighing 11,875 pounds. The ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles and lit by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs.

The Revelers

Revelers start arriving late in the afternoon on New Year's Eve. By approximately 3:00 p.m. EST, the Bow Tie of Times Square (42nd to 47th Sts. between Broadway and 7th Ave.) is fully closed to traffic. Revelers are directed by the NYPD to gather in separate viewing sections. As one section fills up, the revelers are directed by police to the next viewing section. As the evening progresses, revelers continue to fill the Times Square neighborhood along Broadway and Seventh Avenue moving uptown from 43rd Street to as far as Central Park.

Lighting and Raising the Times Square New Year's Eve Ball

The celebration begins with the lighting and raising of the New Year's Eve Ball atop One Times Square. The representatives of the Philips Lighting Company flip the giant switch, which lights the New Year's Eve Ball and begins its ascent accompanied by special pyrotechnic effects atop One Times Square.

SAFA Chinese Cultural Performance

The Sino-American Friendship Association ("SAFA") presents a spectacular Tongliang Athletics Dragon Dance from Chongqing China to begin the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration. The performance is on the Countdown Stage at Duffy Island between 46th and 47th Streets. The Chinese cultural performance will conclude with red and gold pyrotechnic effects atop One Times Square.

The Tongliang Athletics Dragon Dance is the most famous Chinese dragon dance, hailing from the Tongliang District of Chongqing. This year, a 15-meter-long Athletics Dragon – gold and blue in color and undertaken by eight performers - will come to life in Times Square, depicting the characteristics of "high," "fast," and "strong" to thrill onlookers, presented in partnership with the Sino-American Friendship Association. The dance is the same type performed at the Beijing Olympic games, and its movements are relatively large in magnitude, speed, and difficulty. Dragon dances are often performed during the Chinese New Year to scare away evil spirits and bring in peace.

Times Square Alliance sanitation crew clad in bright red uniforms begins to distribute tens of thousands of fun handouts to the Times Square revelers for cheering in the New Year. Planet Fitness is providing festive purple and yellow New Year's Eve hats and purple and yellow balloons tied with gold mylar ribbons, and the Sino-American Friendship Association is providing red scarves.

Hourly Countdown with Steve Harvey

As we approach the New Year, Steve Harvey will appear at the Countdown Stage to wish the Times Square revelers "Happy New Year" and lead the 10-second countdown to the 7:00 hour accompanied by colorful pyrotechnic effects atop One Times Square. He will also read several of the Confetti Wishes to be mixed into the confetti release at midnight and share his wish for the New Year.

Your Wallet Shouldn't Feel the Burn! Try These 7 Cheap Fitness Options

As boutique studios and class-sharing programs hike up prices, budget-minded fitness enthusiasts are feeling the squeeze. The popular cycling and barre studio Flywheel was the latest to raise prices of some classes, but it was certainly not alone. In 2016, ClassPass raised its prices, as did SoulCycle.

Don't stress, though - there are plenty of ways to work out without the high price tag. Some studios even offer classes for free - you just have to know where to look.

Karma Programs

One of the most rewarding ways to take fitness classes for free is through a karma program. A fitness studio - usually a yoga one - offers up free classes in exchange for working a shift. The work can involve menial tasks like cleaning bathrooms or sweeping the studios, but it's a great way to get to know the staff at a studio you really love. Better yet, many of these programs offer the chance for workers to become certified as an instructor at the studio at a reduced price.

These are sometimes hard to find, so keep an eye out on your studio's website or its social media pages. Don't be afraid to ask instructors if this is something offered - you'll often be surprised at their response.

The verdict: If you love a studio, a karma program is your best option for free classes.

"First Time Free" Offers

Most studios offer a discount or free class for first-time attendees. While these aren't always advertised, you can often find them by poking around on the studio's website. Some offer the first class completely free; others offer a discount on the first few classes.

The verdict: Whether the class is free or discounted, it's a good deal. Definitely take advantage of the prices.

ClassPass and FitReserve

On their faces, ClassPass and FitReserve aren't the cheapest options when it comes to fitness classes. They're a great way to try out different studios in your city; for a set price, you receive a certain number of classes at studios that list their classes through the site. There is, though, a way around the high prices. Both services offer discounts for first-time users - FitReserve is currently offering 20 percent off, while ClassPass has a first-month offer available for $19. These discounts change throughout the year, so be sure to watch for good ones.

It's important that if you can't swing the high price point of these services sans discount, you remember to cancel your membership before autorenew sets in.

The verdict: ClassPass and FitReserve are great options for the first month. After that, cancel your membership.

Zenrez

Zenrez is a program similar to ClassPass and FitReserve, but you don't have to pay for a membership. Sign up on the website, and book classes at your favorite studios through it. When you do, you'll be offered a discount at whichever studio you choose, but only as long as you take last-minute classes.

The verdict: Zenrez is perfect for someone who doesn't love to plan but loves to save money.

Groupon

Groupon is an oft-forgotten juggernaut in the fitness world. The discount site provides deals on everything from yoga classes to kickboxing at a discounted price. Not every studio has offers on Groupon, and they are often for first-time studio users, so be careful when you book your first class at a studio.

The verdict: With a little research, a Groupon can pay off big time.

Local Recreation Department

OK, stick with us here. We know your local recreation department is perhaps the last place you'd look for a chic and fun fitness experience. But many local rec departments offer classes at a steep discount. In New York, for example, the recreation department offers classes, both indoor and outdoor, completely free.

The verdict: It may be crusty, but your local rec center can help you save some serious cash.

Local Bloggers

Something to look out for when seeking cheap fitness are local sites that aggregate cheap or free fitness classes in your city. Fit For Free NYC and The Fit Crasher in DC are prime examples of great resources that do your work for you.

The verdict: Definitely follow local bloggers who aggregate fitness classes in your area. Let them do the heavy lifting!

When trying a diet, as you're attempting to stick to a program, it's not unusual to tell yourself little "lies" to either feel better about your choices or to make excuses for why you haven't fully committed to getting the body you've dreamed of. And I'm not talking about becoming a supermodel overnight. But it's not surprising to hear folks tell themselves little "lies" to compensate for not being where they want to be fitness-wise.

Here are some common "lies" you might get caught up in as you attempt to make a "new you" for 2016, and some tips to stop the BS - so you can start dealing with the truth and rock a more fit you in the New Year.

1. The Excuses Lie

This is a favorite one: "It's okay if I ate junk the past few days because this weekend . . ."

Having a cheat day or a small treat daily is a wonderful way to enjoy life yet stick to a healthy eating plan. However, if you're telling yourself it's OK to binge because somehow you'll exercise enough to make up for a junk-food bender, this is a harmful lie on many levels.

First, it's OK to have a cheat day or a small daily treat, but days and days of junk isn't good for your system, period. It also sets up a bad pattern: junk, junk, junk, and then a frantic panic to make up for this, which can lead to undereating or over-exercising, both of which are bad habits.

What to Do: If you find yourself engaged in this lie frequently, start to track when you're having these junky periods. It may be tied to work stress or emotional matters. Once you see a pattern emerge, rather going on a Ben & Jerry's binge to cope with your stress, you can plan to stave of the bender by packing extra healthy snacks at work and enlisting some emotional support from friends and family.
Get tech friendly and track your daily diet and workout routine on any number of fitness apps. If you're into technology, utilize one and enlist a buddy who you can work on mutual fitness goals together. Two minds are better than one.
Pencil in your cheat days. Having one is a great way to allow yourself to indulge and let loose a bit without giving into those treats on a daily basis. It makes you accountable for the other days of the week at a higher level. Why would you "binge" on a Monday if you know that in a few short days on Friday, you've got your cheat day?

2. The Debbie Downer Lie

These are the lies you tell yourself when making excuses for not having the body you want.

"I had a baby - I will never look as good as I did."

"I'm just never going to lose the last ten pounds. "

"I'm not a runner. I could never run a 5K."

"It's just how I'm built."

What to Do: Yes, our body types have pros and cons, but to simply not try and give up before you even have started is too fatalistic. Committing to lose weight is worth it because at the end of the day, what do you gain? You gain so much: you feel better in your clothing, you wake up with more energy, if you're a parent you've got the pep to run after your kids, and for all of us, when swimsuit season time comes, you're ready to hit the beach without wearing that t-shirt or gigantic cover up. Will I ever be a runway model at 5'2? No, but I am fit, healthy, and happy with how I look. I highlight the body parts that work well for me, like my legs, and work what I've got. Stop comparing yourself to others and show off the high points of your body type that you've been given. We've all got something beautiful about us - believe and you will achieve!

3. The "Beverages Don't Count" Lie

People forget to count those beverages. Everything you take in counts.

Those flavored lattes? A powerful amount of ingredients and calories that add up. Let's not forget that glass of wine you have each night or the lunchtime sodas. Even if you're rocking a kale salad with grilled chicken and some fruit for a snack, what you're sipping on could be preventing you from dropping pounds.

What to Do: How do you beat this beast? Pay attention to what you drink and while water isn't magic, staying hydrated and drinking enough water can help you stay fuller longer. If you hate water, try flavored waters and/or drinking through a straw. You may be apt to ingest more water when drinking with a straw. I swear by it!

4. The Scale Means Everything Lie

You look at the scale and see a number you don't like. This either fuels tears or a panicky feeling to avoid the next meal.

Stop it!

The scale may be exact if it's calibrated right, but the scale lies unless you've got one that weighs body fat too.

What to Do: Remember - the scale won't tell you how much muscle you're building or if you feel good in your own skin. Your scale can't tell you if you pulled some serious bench presses off, and it can't tell you if your clothes fit properly.

This isn't to say you should ignore your scale but that it shouldn't be the answer to how you feel about your fitness and health.

5. The "I'm Hungry" Lie

You think you're hungry but the bottom line is you're:

-Tired

-Stressed

-Skipped a meal (and are about to go on a hardcore eating binge)

-Depressed

What to Do: Time and time again when I get fatigued, I want to eat the world and then some. Note when you are the hungriest and start to see if you notice any patterns as to when you're ready to eat a small child. You may see that you're not hungry but really just need a nap!

No matter where you are on your fitness journey, whether you're simply warming up or already a pro, cut out the lies you're telling yourself and start holding yourself accountable and you'll get the results you want in 2016!

Can You Be Too Fit to Be Fertile? One Fitness Instructor’s Story of Discovery and Healing

Ashley Pitt is a Bay-Area based group fitness instructor, personal trainer, and the writer of A Lady Goes West healthy lifestyle blog and her first ebook, "Fit and Fertile."

I'd always been told I was superfit and healthy. And that's because I was lean, I exercised a ton, taught group fitness classes, and loved to eat clean. However, a couple of years ago, I found out that even though I appeared to be very healthy on the outside, something wasn't quite right on the inside. It was my hormones. And ultimately, my fertility.

I was, in fact, too fit to be fertile, and as I started to uncover what was going on with my body, I discovered that my condition, called hypothalamic amenorrhea, is a problem that's a lot more common among woman in the fitness industry than we'd like to think. But nobody is talking about it, and it's not very easy to find answers. Here's my story.

Just about two years ago, my hubby and I decided we were ready to start a family. At that time, I was working as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer living in San Francisco and doing multiple workouts a day and walking miles upon miles to get from gym to gym. I was also eating really clean, focusing on salads, smoothies, sushi, and small portioned-out meal-prepped tupperwares - the epitome of prepared.

I had good muscle tone, I felt fine and from the outside, was the model of good health. However, when I decided to stop taking my hormonal birth control pills, which I had been on for years and which had kept my cycle regular, I was shocked and confused to find that my period never reappeared on its own.

Over the course of a year, I went to multiple doctors and specialists and finally got the diagnosis of hypothalamic amenorrhea - a condition in which the brain tells the body to stop having a period because the environment is too dangerous to reproduce. This can be caused by too much exercise, too much stress, or too little food. Mine was most definitely based on the overexercising element, with low body fat from being really lean, too. Basically, my insides had shut down, because I was expending so much energy on tough workouts day in and day out.

I took to the internet to find help, and I came up short. My own doctor didn't know what to do and told me I had no chance of getting pregnant naturally. And every blogger's tale or website I read said to eat a bunch of junk to gain weight and quit exercising altogether, which would mean I would have to leave the fitness industry entirely. But I knew that wasn't the path for me, so I paved my own way, and I was able to get my period back and ultimately get pregnant by making a few lifestyle changes. Here's what I did.

Reduced my high-intensity workouts by half.

I knew I wasn't going to stop working out entirely, especially because fitness was my job and passion, so I slowly reduced my high-intensity workouts by half. I did all the barre, yoga, walking, and light weightlifting that I wanted (no more than one workout a day), but I never did HIIT or tougher one-hour classes (like Orangetheory Fitness, where I was a coach at the time, or Les Mills BODYPUMP) more than twice a week. I also took one to two full rest days each week.

Increased my body fat and my dietary fat intake.

I had been eating very healthy, however, I discovered that much of the time, my meals were missing dietary fat. I added at least one full avocado a day to my diet, whole eggs (all the yolks), veggies coated in coconut oil, lots of nut butter, salmon, and even weekly dinners of grass-fed organic steak. I also upped my overall intake of food each day by eating a few more healthy snacks and supporting an overall weight gain. In the process, I gained a few percentage points of body fat, but I did it with healthy food.

Became a believer in Eastern Medicine.

At first, I was totally skeptical of acupuncture, but I finally made an appointment a few months into my struggles, and I've never looked back. My acupuncturist was able to address my body's physical and even mental stress by using special points to heal my liver system and reproductive hormones. She also created special herbal supplements for me and advised me on other supplements to take to improve my fertility.

Over the course of a year of keeping up with these lifestyle changes, my natural period came back to me. And even though sometimes I got down about missing tough workouts and growing out of my size 0 workout capris, I knew that it was worth the effort. In fact, during the next year after beating hypothalamic amenorrhea, I was able to naturally conceive, having taken so much care to prepare and heal my body the right way.

All the while, I continued to teach a few group fitness classes a week and write about fitness on my healthy lifestyle blog, "A Lady Goes West," ultimately keeping my place in the industry.

My story is unique, because I didn't have to give up fitness to get better. I just had to make enough lifestyle changes to put my body on the road to recovery - and in the process, I learned an entirely new, hormonally healthy way to live, which I'll maintain moving forward, especially after welcoming my first baby boy later this year.

To all the superfit ladies out there, no matter what you do, make sure you monitor your cycle to know that it's coming regularly of its own accord and not just induced by hormonal birth control. And be careful not to overdo it on your workouts, because you just may be messing with your insides. Because, yes, you can be too fit to be fertile.
