2 Activists Investigating Ivanka Trump's Shoe Manufacturer Just Went Missing in China

Ivanka Trump's clothing brand employs an ethically questionable manufacturer. At the end of April, reports of labor abuse at the factory, operated by G-III Apparel Group Ltd, surfaced; employees were allegedly paid $62 for a 60-hour workweek and forced to work exorbitant overtime hours. Now, China has detained at least one activist who was investigating labor violations at another factory where Trump's shoes are produced.

According to the Associated Press, one labor activist was detained by Chinese authorities while two others are missing (but are presumed to have been arrested as well). The activists worked for China Labor Watch, an American nonprofit that investigates abuse of workers across China. Hua Haifeng, one of the detained activists, worked undercover at the Huajian factory where Trump's shoes are made; he allegedly witnessed verbal abuse, unpaid overtime, low pay, and misuse of student labor, according to the nonprofit's executive director, Li Qiang.

Authorities called Haifeng's wife, Deng Guimian, to inform her that her husband had been arrested. "They said, 'You only need to know that your husband has been arrested on criminal charges. You don't need to know anything other than that,'" Guiman told NPR. Chinese officials claim that the activists used illegal surveillance methods in their research; Li contends that they only had cell phones.

Li also told NPR that Haifeng had recorded more than eight hours of footage that purported to show labor abuses at the Huajian shoe factory (which produces roughly 20,000 pairs of shoes for Trump a year). The factory was a target, Li added, because it would be convincing leverage to persuade Trump's brand to address rampant poor labor conditions in China.

It's not shocking that the Chinese government detained activists investigating Trump's factory, given the suspicious timing of Trump's trademark approval in the country, and Li agrees. NPR reports that "he believes that the police are trying to protect this factory because it makes shoes for Ivanka Trump," and "he says he has investigated hundreds of factories in China - and while his staff have often been caught and kicked out, they have never been arrested until now."

From Blogger to Wine Club Entrepreneur: The Story of Wine + Moxxi

In the Venn diagram intersection of small-production wines, philanthropy, ethical commerce, and getting fun packages in the mail, there is a small but mighty company name: Wine + Moxxi. The subscription wine service is the brainchild of Lauren Barnard, who started her journey as a blogger five years ago and used that role as a way to meet with winemakers and learn about the wine industry. From there, she launched Wine + Moxxi, a subscription service providing a monthly box of two carefully selected small-production wines (organically produced when possible) for $40.

The target Wine + Moxxi consumer is a savvy, forward-thinking young woman (a #MoxxiGal) who loves wine and cares about where she's putting her money. Delighted by both the product (wine!) and the philanthropic foundation of the company's mission, we picked Barnard's brain about all things Wine + Moxxi, from her motivations for starting the company to the triumphs and struggles of building your own brand.

POPSUGAR: What was the inspiration for starting Wine + Moxxi?

Lauren Barnard: There isn't really a wine club or company out there for young, inspiring women, so we started one for them. I wanted to create not only a wine company with fantastic, affordable, artisanal wine, but also a community that celebrates our customers. After all, wine is just a medium for experience. It is the stories from those who are drinking it and making it that make it meaningful.

PS: What made you want to start a subscription box company rather than a brick-and-mortar wine shop or some other kind of retail model?

LB: The wine industry is changing, and online distribution methods are highly more accessible than they used to be. The potential reach and scale is larger via an online model than brick and mortar. We are taking the old-school methodologies of the wine industry by sourcing authentic, pure wines and applying innovative strategies of the tech world to bolster and scale our brand.

PS: What makes Wine + Moxxi different from other wine subscription boxes?

LB: Quality and community are our differentiators. We source from a global portfolio rather than just a domestic portfolio, so you get to learn about wines from around the world at an affordable price. Also, we always source small production wine (and organically produced whenever possible). This means you're getting a wine made from a family farmer rather than a large corporation or in bulk. And we offer community. Whether its holiday parties or hosting International Women's Day events, we are creating meaningful ways for our customers to get together and meet one another.

PS: What aspect of running Wine + Moxxi do you enjoy the most?

LB: I love meeting our customers. We've nicknamed them the #MoxxiGal. She is independent, strong, unique, a little sassy, and seems to do it all with an attitude of strength and gratitude. Our customers keep me full of new inspiration and motivation.

PS: Your target consumer seems to be the millennial woman. Why do you think this demographic is so passionate about supporting sustainable products and eco-friendly brands?

LB: While we have done a lot of research to support this claim, as a female millennial myself, I am applying my same values into the brand. It's an easy choice for me that my company would support things like women's entrepreneurship initiatives across Africa or organic farming methods when selecting our wines. There are thousands of choices out there. I want to make sure our choices are making an impact.

PS: What has been the most surprising thing about running Wine + Moxxi?

LB: It is so much fun. All day, I am basically figuring out ways to bring joy into people's lives via the medium of wine. Even during the hardest of days, I can stop and have a moment to say, "Relax! It's just wine."

PS: What are some of the biggest struggles of owning your own business?

LB: It truly can be a roller coaster of ups and downs. Some months will be fantastic and full of travel or new, exciting partnerships, but some months may be spent solving problems, which can be very trying. It takes a lot more resilience than I ever imagined as the business ebbs and flows through its growth.

PS: Given that women buy the majority of all retail wine in the US, why do you think the wine industry overall is still so male-dominated?

LB: That's a great question. Let's change that! We need more female mentors encouraging women to go into wine as a profession. Like engineering or computer science, women don't think about wine as a viable profession. They can't relate to other women in the field because they don't see them in it.

PS: What advice do you have for young women who might be considering launching their own business?

LB: Do it and don't look back. I started as a blogger five years ago and used it as an excuse to go up to wine country to meet with winemakers and learn. It grew from there. If I can do it, you can do it.

When it comes to fashion, no one can call Queen Letizia of Spain wasteful. The royal wears and rewears the same pieces with total confidence - sometimes in the same month - getting photographed at official events and meetings with dignitaries in recycled outfits like it's no big deal.

Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance Look So Good Together It's Almost a Crime

Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance are both Hollywood icons in their own right, but we're equally as obsessed with their romance. The two first met in 1980 and have been making us swoon ever since. They tied the knot in 1997 and welcomed their twins, son Slater and daughter Bronwyn, nine years later. Aside from writing a book together, Friends: A Love Story, they have both starred in hit Ryan Murphy shows - Angela was in the last four seasons of American Horror Story while Courtney gained critical acclaim for his performance in The People v. O.J. Simpson. Honestly, if the famous writer were to create a show about their relationship, it would probably be called American Love Story, because these two know how to keep the flame burning.

Mom Gives Her Daughter's Homework Assignment a Feminist Rewrite

If you've ever looked over your child's homework, you're likely familiar with the overwhelming urge to help them correct every wrong answer (that you know of at least). This was the case for Lynne Polvino, who took one look at her daughter's fill-in-the-blank worksheet about a mom going back to work after having a baby. However, it wasn't 6-year-old Hazel who was wrong in any way - Polvino had an issue with the worksheet itself.

The worksheet, which required first graders to fill the correct words into blanks in a story, didn't sit right with Polvino because of its suggestion that mothers who work make their families unhappy, and that dads shouldn't be trusted to do any housework or cooking correctly.

"It just pushed so many buttons for me, and with each sentence it managed to get worse!" Polvino told TODAY. "My shock and dismay quickly turned to outrage. I mean, what decade are we in, anyway? In this day and age, we're going to tell kids that mothers working outside the home makes their children and families unhappy? That fathers don't normally do things like cook and wash the dishes?"

To combat the irritation she was feeling, the working mom decided to rewrite the worksheet with a feminist twist.

Lisa was happy. Her mother was back at work. Before Lisa was born her mother worked in a big office. Because it valued her important contributions to the workplace, her employer offered nearly a year of paid maternity leave and flex time upon her arrival. The morning was wonderful. Lisa had to get to school on time. Her mother had to get to work on time. her father was home on his paid maternity leave, caring for Lisa's younger brother and contributing equally to the running of the household. Nobody had to rush because Dad had things firmly under control.

Polvino says she composed the rewrite "to reflect the kind of world I want to live in, the kind of world I want my kids to live in when they're old enough to have jobs and families." After updating the worksheet, the mom sent an email to her daughter's school about the outdated assignment, and Hazel's teacher agreed with Polvino's points, promising she'd look more carefully at each worksheet that's assigned before sending it home.

"I have so much respect for all the working moms of past generations who had to deal with this type of crap on a regular basis!" Polvino said. "I'm so grateful to them for paving the way."

Whoops! Venus Williams May Have Just Revealed the Sex of Serena's Baby

The Williams sisters clearly aren't good at keeping secrets. Just a month after Serena accidentally announced her pregnancy on Snapchat, her sister made a slip-up about the sex of the baby during an interview with Eurosport on Wednesday. After winning the second round of the French Open, Venus joked about possible baby names, saying, "She's going to call me 'favorite aunt. Every day we're like, 'Baby Vee, baby Isher, baby Lyn,' so we all want the baby to be named after us." Whoops!

Serena is engaged to Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, and earlier this month, the couple made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala. Perhaps George Clooney's mom has some damage control advice for Venus?

These Smoothie Bowls Are Almost Too Pretty to Eat (Keyword: "Almost")

If the saying "you are what you eat" is true, then consider Instagrammer Rachel Lorton a work of art. The vegan and self-professed "smoothie bowl art enthusiast" is not kidding around about her gorgeous meals; the colorful creations that she posts on her feed are pleasing to the eye and the palate. Complete with recipes, how-to videos, and encouragement for her growing group of followers, Rachel's beautiful smoothie bowls are only matched by her cheerful personality.

"I inspire them to eat healthy because they didn't realize vegan food can look so good!"

"I constantly get feedback from, let's just say 'junk-eaters,' who tell me that I inspire them to eat healthy because they didn't realize vegan food can look so good," Rachel told POPSUGAR of her edible artwork. There's just something about a beautiful meal that makes you more likely to eat healthily and broaden your culinary horizons, right?

While Rachel uses a variety of ingredients (which are listed in the captions of each smoothie snap), there's one standout favorite. "I absolutely love using raw beetroot," she said. "I will prep it ahead of time by peeling it, chopping it into cubes, and freezing it." Not only does the root lend a gorgeous magenta color to the smoothie bowls, but Rachel also adores its health benefits: "I love all of its nutritional characteristics, but I enjoy how it helps muscle recovery and stamina for working out the most." Another of her favorite smoothie bowl ingredients is spirulina, a natural algae powder high in protein and antioxidants.

We've collected photos of these smoothie bowls that are almost too pretty to eat - keyword: "almost" - but you should definitely check out Rachel's Instagram for full recipes and instructions for each beautiful meal.

Head over to our Snapchat today to see how you can make a gorgeous millenial pink smoothie bowl!

If You're Thinking About Sticking Around For a Wonder Woman Post-Credits Scene, Don't

Superhero films and Easter egg-filled post-credits scenes practically go hand-in-hand these days. Marvel is particularly fond of the trend, recently packing in a whopping five end credits scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. For anyone annoyed by the practice (and I'm with you, because the bathroom line is crazy by the time all of those names go by), Wonder Woman skips out on including a post-credits scene entirely. It's not exactly surprising, either, since the DC Universe hasn't exactly embraced adding extra scenes. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice neglected to include one, although Suicide Squad did (as well as Man of Steel back in 2013).

Wondering why? "I'm not going to say we'd never do one," producer Chuck Roven explained to Cinemablend recently. "There was one in Suicide Squad. But I don't think that we want to feel that we're forced to do something just because we didn't in the past." Luckily director Patty Jenkins's take on the kickass female superhero is strong enough to survive excluding a gimmicky tease for Justice League. At of Wednesday afternoon, Wonder Woman is sitting pretty at 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which is higher than its Marvel counterparts (The Avengers scored a 92 percent, and Iron Man has 94 percent), and leaps and bounds above Batman v Superman (which has 26 percent) and Suicide Squad (25 percent). If you want to stick around just to enjoy the incredible theme song playing over the credits, though, feel free.

You'll Be Getting All Your Summer Updo Inspiration From This Royal

After we saw Queen Letizia of Spain wearing a bubble ponytail, we realized the royal is actually the queen of the updo - we couldn't resist the pun. Going back through our archives and analyzing her looks through the past few years (it's our job), we noticed that while Letizia's modern fashion choices are always what capture our attention right away, her hairstyles are as carefully planned and executed as what she's wearing.

Just in the past year, Queen Letizia has let go of her short bob for a longer length that allows her to braid, twist, and knot her hair to her every whim, and there's not one single updo she's worn that doesn't feature a special detail. Keep reading to see what we mean, and get ready to feel inspired to wear your hair up all Summer long.

This Secret Indian Hair-Growth Formula May Finally Give You a Mermaid Mane

Anyone who has unsuccessfully tried to get their hair to grow may roll their eyes at this video in which Prachi (the vlogger behind Super Wow Style) shares a family recipe for lengthier locks. Could a simple mix of natural ingredients really make hair grow up to 30-40 percent as Prachi claims? We were a bit skeptical, too, and while we have not tried this remedy, a look at Prachi's long shiny mane and reading the reviewers' testimonials is making us reconsider. Perhaps this is the holistic answer to getting the mermaid mane of your dreams. In fact, Prachi challenges viewers to take before and after images when they test the treatment.

"People ask, 'How does you hair grow?' and I give them the same answer," she says in the video. "I learned it from my mom, and she learned is from her mother. It's an old Indian secret."

To DIY it, you'll need: coconut oil, castor oil, vitamin E, aloe vera leaves, and two bowls (one small and one large). Start by cutting up the aloe vera leaves, and then scratch it with a knife or fork to scrape out more gel. Rub the leaf on your scalp and massage the aloe gel into your roots. Use your fingers to make sure it's all over your head.

Then, in a small bowl, combine one tablespoon of castor oil with 1.5 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Pierce the vitamin E capsule with needle, extract the oil, and add it to the formula. Place the small bowl with the three oils in a larger one containing hot water. Warning: do not place the oil directly on a fire (including a stove) or in microwaves, since it can catch fire immediately.

After five minutes, the hot oil should be ready. Use your fingertips to apply it onto your scalp. Lay down on a sofa or the like and gently massage it into your scalp for two to three minutes. "This is very important to increase blood circulation for hair growth," she explains.

Once you're done, weave your hair in tight braid and sleep on it. Wash you hair in the morning. According to Prachi, you will start seeing a difference in your hair length "very, very soon."

While she does not specify how often to do the treatment, reviewers offer their successful trials.

"I tried this method exactly as she explained to and it WORKED!" one commenter said. "My hair grew about 4 to 5 inches in about 3 months! I did it 2 x per week for a month. Then 1 x per week for the next 2 months. It made my hair so healthy and strong. Everyone kept commenting on how fast my hair grew and how long it is. Before I started my hair was bra strap length. Now it is to my hips! I don't have photos to post, because I seriously hate taking photos of myself since I have gained weight (next thing to work on) but I will consider it."

Another commenter said, "I watched your video and used these products! And it works like MAGIC. I don't know how but my hair grew in a week. I used it two times a week though aloe vera was not available! But castor oil is super! Hats off!"

A third remarked, "It's amazing . . . I've seen results in just 2 wash[es] . . . My hair [ha]s became more silky and the best part it made my hair 2.5 cm longer."

So, what do you think? Is this a hoax or the most genius hair hack ever?

1 Woman Is Going Viral For Her Life-Saving Curly Hair Tips

Four year transformation, all from learning how to take care of my curls from curlyhair

Learning to properly care for and embrace your curly hair can be a bit of a struggle filled with endless trial and error. One woman finally has it down to a science, but it took her four years to get there. Reddit user capslockramen is going viral on Reddit for sharing the details of her dramatic hair transformation, along with her daily routine for keeping her luscious curls in check.

She posted before-and-after photos that show just how drastic her hair journey has been. The "before" snapshot was taken during her senior year of high school when she "hated" her curls so much that she "got a relaxed curl perm, bleached it blond, and straightened [her] hair five to six days a week, without using quality heat protectant." But that all changed when she went off to college, where she decided to let her blond perm grow out and started experimenting with different products until she found exactly what works best.

Four years later, she's mastered the art of taming her curls and finally loves her springy ringlets just as they are. "I've never felt more in love with my hair," she wrote in the Reddit post. She also shared her step-by-step styling routine, which is detailed below.

  1. After shower, squeeze excess water from hair.
  2. Flip head upside down.
  3. Apply generous amount of Cantu leave-in conditioner. Run fingers through hair to ensure even distribution.
  4. Scrunch in generous amount of Miss Jessie's MultiCultural Curls cream.
  5. Scrunch out excess water using a cotton t-shirt.
  6. Wrap hair in said t-shirt.
  7. Stand upright again and let hair sit in the shirt about 10 minutes.
  8. Flip head upside down again and remove t-shirt.
  9. Dry with hair drying facing toward the scalp. Use a diffuser! Put the heat settings on warm (not hot) with the speed on high.
  10. Scrunch hair with t-shirt while drying. This part usually takes me like 20 minutes (definitely have to take breaks so all the blood doesn't rush to my head and make me pass out).
  11. When it's close enough to completely dry, spray with medium-hold hairspray. Stand back up normally and fix where I want the part, hairspray that a little.
  12. Done!

Once her detailed routine went viral, amassing nearly 800 comments, the woman responded to other users' questions with various other tips and tricks for managing curls every day.

  1. Make sure your hairstylist cuts your locks while they're dry, and avoid using a razor to thin it.
  2. She opts for using a shampoo without sulfates three to four times per week.
  3. Worried about messing up your hair overnight? Try sleeping with a silk cap on or put it in a loose bun using an elastic ribbon as a hair tie.
  4. Brush out your locks before you shower, not after.

When celebrity hairstylist Oscar Blandi caught wind of this woman's viral hair hacks, he gave additional helpful recommendations for gals with curly manes. Instead of using a t-shirt to dry your hair like the Reddit user suggested, Blandi told Yahoo Beauty how a Turkish towel, which is highly absorbent, may be a better option. "Press the towel on your hair, don't rub it all over your hair," he said. "Rubbing your wet, curly hair will create frizz." After that, apply leave-in conditioner, and then a silicon oil-based product with just a dab of gel. "The combination will keep the hair soft and not crunchy," he said.

At the end of the day, experimentation is key for people with curly hair, but this woman's routine and tips seem like a great place to start if you're looking to kick-start a journey to embracing your ringlets in their gorgeous natural state.

This Drag Artist's Look Is So Unique, It Makes Us Redefine Gender Entirely

"I have problems with gender dysphoria and this has pushed me to distorting my appearance because it's more comfortable for me to confuse people about my gender than have people see me as male," a drag artist known as Salvia told I-D. The male-born, English makeup artist is already gaining buzz on Instagram for rocking out-there, gender-neutral looks. Think: white clown face, eyes that look like hallow sockets, and exaggerated, distorted lips. It's many of the same makeup tricks we use during Halloween, except this is not a costume - it's a form of self-expression.

Not feeling like she fit into any category, the Salvia persona grew. "I named myself Salvia after the magical plant," she said in the interview. "I'm obsessed with flowers, and a common theme in my artwork is giving birth to yourself, and I think that flowers represent that. Mazatec shamans see it as an incarnation of the Virgin Mary and I find that very mystical and romantic. I am Salvia, she isn't completely a made up character."

While Salvia looks may be more abstract than botanical, she definitely has skills when it comes to using makeup brushes. Keep reading to see more of her many gender-neutral faces.

A Theme Park Enthusiast Crammed Your Entire Summer Into 1 Day

For most, a trip to Disneyland is a fun weekend getaway. For me, it's practically my office. As a theme park journalist, I regularly tour land expansions, try inventive park cuisine, and experience new thrill rides before they're open to the public. I love what I do, and it's a joy, but you can imagine my surprise when Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Universal Orlando Resort all unveiled their big Memorial Day Weekend openings on the exact same day.

What is a ride-obsessed reporter to do when she has to be three places at once? Crisscross the country in the span of 24 hours, of course, flying between Florida and California to see, experience, and eat everything on both coasts that's coming your way at Disney and Universal this Summer.

I walked through Pandora - The World of Avatar, a newly themed land that pays homage to James Cameron's blockbuster film, at night; awoke to witness the grand opening of Volcano Bay water theme park at Universal Orlando Resort; and hopped a plane to Anaheim to ride Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! at Disney's California Adventure.

It was crazy and exciting and obviously tiring, but hey, it's not often you get to fly a banshee, stand at the foot of a volcano, and wave hello to Groot in a span of 24 hours.

Thankfully, everything is now officially open, so you can take your time experiencing these parks IRL. (Phew!) But until you make it there, here's what experiencing a Summer's worth of thrills in a single day was really like.

The Sunscreen That Saved My Skin From the Scorching Sun at Walt Disney World

I have a confession to make: I'm a reluctant user of sunscreen. I know I'm supposed to use it to protect myself from sun damage, fine lines, and the like, but I've never enjoyed the feeling of sunscreen lurking beneath my usual makeup. What's more, many drugstore sunscreens had the tendency to irritate my skin and cause unusual rashes. With an exciting trip to Walt Disney World's Pandora steadily approaching, however, I knew I needed something to protect my skin from the harsh Florida sun, and I needed it ASAP.

Through a little process of elimination, I landed on Tatcha's Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen ($65). My daily skincare routine largely consists of products from the gentle brand inspired by Japanese beauty practices. In addition to knowing that Tatcha products typically work well for me, the line's sunscreen boasts a near perfect five-star review on Sephora.

Now here's the nitty-gritty on this sunscreen: the broad-spectrum product is made with zinc oxide and offers SPF 35 protection from UVA and UVB rays. In addition to its protective ingredients, it also consists of calming ones like silk extract, wild rose, and green tea. The sunscreen does come out of the bottle white, but it blends in easily with minimal effort.

As I left for the airport early in the morning, I applied a thin layer of the sunscreen and immediately noticed a change in the appearance of my pores. As a result, I decided to go without makeup until I arrived in Orlando. (Plus, I hate flying with loads of makeup on.) Before hitting the park, I applied yet another layer and, this time, I also applied foundation and concealer atop the sunscreen. To my surprise, the combination of different products did not make my skin feel all covered up and suffocated.

The following day was the real test: I'd be spending a full sunny day at Animal Kingdom. I made sure to apply a thicker layer as I left the hotel that day. Now, here's where you might say I made a huge mistake: I did not reapply. Probably because I'm not used to wearing sunscreen on a regular basis, I completely forgot about the handy bottle of sunscreen once it made its way to the depths of my backpack. Once I got back to the hotel in the early evening, I noticed a reddish color on my shoulders and simply thought to myself, "F*ck." But guess what? My face ended up being just fine. Though my arms were sunburned, my face didn't show any signs of sun exposure.

Since my trip, I won't lie and say I've been as committed to sunscreen as I know I'm supposed to be. That said, I have learned to implement it into my daily routine when it's a sunny day or I know I'm going to be outside a lot. That's progress, right?

House of Cards: Who Exactly Is the Mysterious Mark Usher?

House of Cards has long-revolved around Frank and Claire Underwood, but there's a new character added to the mix in season five: Mark Usher. He first appears in "Chapter 55," aka episode three of the new season. We've been immersed in this twisted world for a long time, so if Usher's appearance had you wondering if we'd met the character before, the answer is no - but he plays a big role in season five.

He is a newly appointed campaign adviser to Will Conway. According to Usher, Heather Conway pushed her husband to hire him, but we don't know exactly why she chose him. While Usher does appear to be helping Will, he also clearly has some dark ties in Washington. No biggie; so does everyone on this show. But as the season continues, Usher's relationship with Will sours.

If Usher looks familiar, it's probably because you've seen actor Campbell Scott before. He most recently played the recurring role Boris Kuester von Jurgens-Ratenicz on Royal Pains. You might also be recognizing him from The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, in which he played Peter Parker's father. He was also in 2007's Music and Lyrics - obviously a very important, career-defining role.

There you have it!
