Why Prince Harry "Wanted Out" of the Royal Family

Prince Harry is certainly one the most beloved members of the royal family, but he almost gave it all up to live a normal life. During a candid interview with the Mail on Sunday, the 32-year-old revealed that he considered giving up his royal life after serving in the army. "I felt as though I was really achieving something," he said of his time serving with the British Army. "I have a deep understanding of all sorts of people from different backgrounds and felt I was part of a team. I wasn't a prince; I was just Harry."

When he was forced to leave his first tour of Afghanistan when his location was revealed by the press in 2008, Harry admitted that he went through a bit of a rough patch. "I spent many years kicking my heels and I didn't want to grow up," he said, referring to his partying past. Once he finally got things together though, he seriously contemplated leaving the royal life behind, but his loyalty to his grandmother Queen Elizabeth helped him in his decision to stay. "I felt I wanted out but then decided to stay in and work out a role for myself. We don't want to be just a bunch of celebrities, but instead, use our role for good." And he's certainly doing just that. Aside from creating the Invictus Games to help wounded veterans and their families, Harry has been following in his late mother Princess Diana's footsteps by carrying on her charity work.

25 Brides Who Went Modest on Their Wedding Day - and Completely Took Our Breath Away

When we first spotted Nicky Hilton on her wedding day, our jaws nearly fell to the ground. Gone was the revealing white number she wore mere days before, when she accidentally flashed a crowd at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week. And in its place? A long, lacy Valentino gown, which one could perfectly describe as "classic" and, above all, "modest."

All of a sudden, our minds went wild. We knew Nicky wasn't the only bride who could pull off this style, so we did a little Insta digging - and found a trove of #ModestBride inspiration.

Read on to see why you might want to consider ditching those strapless options and covering up for your nuptials. These ladies did - and they all looked stunning.

What Happened When 1 Mom Missed Class Because She "Couldn't Find Childcare"

When Morgan King had to miss class one day because she couldn't find a babysitter, she emailed her professor to explain her absence - and the teacher's response will make you shed a few tears of joy.

A single mom attending the University of Tennessee, Morgan tweeted a picture of the email from Sally Hunter, a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Child and Family Studies at the university. Not only did the understanding professor excuse Morgan's absence, but she also encouraged her to bring her baby, Korbyn, along to class in the future if a similar situation arises.

"In the future, if you are having trouble finding someone to watch Korbyn, please feel free to just bring her with you to class," Hunter wrote. She also mentioned how she'd be "absolutely delighted" to hold the baby while teaching the class so that Morgan could pay attention in class. How sweet! "I work for the Department of Child and Family studies, so how terrible would it be if I was unwilling to have a child visit our class? I'm very serious with this offer, just bring Korbyn with you!" she added.

When Morgan arrived a tad late to class the following day, her teacher had a similarly adorable response.

The single mom's initial tweet quickly went viral, garnering more than 26,000 favorites. Hunter's reaction to the Twitter fame will warm your heart and restore your faith in humanity.

Mark Zuckerberg Thinks Facebook Is Like Church - and We Are Its Pastors

Facebook may be celebrating rounding the 2 billion user mark, but Mark Zuckerberg already has his eyes set on the company's next goal: using the social platform to bring a massively divided society back together. While that may seem like an awfully lofty aspiration, it's very much in line with the awfully lofty role that Zuckerberg believes Facebook plays in our lives, a role he just likened to that of churches and intramural sports back before the internet and social media permeated every aspect of our day-to-day existence.

"A church doesn't just come together. It has a pastor who cares for the well-being of their congregation, makes sure they have food and shelter. A little league team has a coach who motivates the kids and helps them hit better. Leaders set the culture, inspire us, give us a safety net, and look out for us," Zuckerberg told an audience of influencers at the Facebook Community Summit last week, adding that each and every one of them had built a community that they lead with the same sort of tenacity that a religious leader would. He also revealed Facebook's new mission statement in the speech - "Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together" - and a new plan to live up to it by recruiting half of the platform's active users into some sort of community-based group. It's a far cry from the 100 million (or five percent) of users who are currently engaging in groups Facebook deems to be "meaningful communities," and Facebook will be up against an incredible odds when it comes to getting users to solace within an online space that has housed live-streaming violence, fake news, and one of the most brutal battlefields during the 2016 election.

But it's not impossible. Over the last six months, Facebook has doubled the number of users who are community members by utilizing artificial intelligence to identify the communities best suited to individual users and plans to roll out a set of tools aimed toward boosting the quality of groups and the way that people interact with them over the coming months. Groups are not new to Facebook - the average user is a member of roughly 30 groups, though the breakdown of private and public in that number is unknown. Still, improving the quality and privacy of these spaces may indeed make for a safe place for those who want to talk to other like-minded individuals. It'll also require a whole lot of moderation and community-based involvement from the company and a willingness on the part of users to have Facebook employees privy to their private messages and discussions, a tradeoff that, given the right approach, could in fact make Facebook the place where people learn and grow from one another and not just a place to catch up on the lives of others or what's going on in the world.

For now, it's not wrong to be skeptical of the idea that Facebook is like a church (certainly some will even consider that claim blasphemous) or that certain users are de facto pastors. But there's absolutely something to be said about the creation of safe spaces in places that feel as though they may be becoming unhealthily toxic. We'll definitely be watching Facebook closely over the coming months, because if it puts the proper resources into this effort and does it right, it could have the power to change the internet, if not the world.

The Truth Behind Costco’s $5 Rotisserie Chicken

Image Source: Flickr user terren in Virginia

We can always count on Dr. Oz to expose the truth about our favorite foods. He recently investigated the hidden ingredients in rotisserie chicken, and now we finally know why it's so addictive. He teamed up with award-winning writer Mark Schatzker to figure out why Americans can't get enough of the stuff, especially Costco's $5 rotisserie chicken.

The first shocking piece of information is that rotisserie chicken is often processed, in other words, "pre-seasoned in factories," and then shipped to supermarkets, where "an employee can put it on the skewer and cook it." You may already know part of what makes store-bought rotisserie chickens so tasty is that they're on the salty side, but the skin is also flavored with MSG and sugar, among other natural flavors. Similar to potato chips, this combination helps explain why we can never have too much rotisserie chicken. Despite the seemingly scariness of it all, Dr. Oz says it may be "one of the healthiest processed foods out there." And in similar Dr. Oz. fashion, he suggests taking off the skin to keep it healthier. But if that sounds like insanity, add other sides to your plate to avoid overeating.

Mom's Heartfelt Note to Her Husband For the Times She "Forgets to See Him"

"Sometimes everything feels chaotic and fast, like a whirlwind we can't stop. Time is flying by and I forget to really see you," starts a heartfelt letter wife and mom, Jessica Johnston, wrote to her husband Graham on her blog, Wonderoak. In the moving note, Jess seeks to reassure, praise, and honor her husband in the ways that everyday life doesn't allow for.

She starts by explaining that when she does slow down, she takes notice of the ways Graham has changed and grown both alone and with her in the years since they married. She shares that both her and her husband have seen each other at their best and worst, and admits that sometimes, she expects everything from him.

"Things that don't belong to you, like making me feel happy, or skinny, or perfect. I'm sorry; it's not your job, I know it's not. Sometimes when I'm angry at me, I get angry at you instead," she wrote. "I take things out on you. When I'm struggling or anxious or depressed, I roll my eyes, and I glare at you when you say the wrong thing. There wasn't a right thing you could have said anyway. My struggle is with me, not with you. I'm sorry that in the day to day mess of life, I give you my worst instead of my best . . . more often than I'd like to admit."

The mom continues, telling her husband that he's her favorite, today and every day, to go through hard things, adventure, celebrate, laugh, cry - things that she, or any partner, might take for granted; things that any partner may question their stance on without a bit of reassurance, especially during difficult times. But, most of all, Jess says that Graham is her favorite person to parent with and that she's realized he's her best surprise since having their four children.

We are doing our best to raise them with whole hearts and passionate souls and we barely ever know what we're doing. We're in way over our heads, and we think we fail more than we succeed, but we keep loving them and leading them anyway.

You are doing the very best job; I'm so proud of the dad that you are.

You are my favorite father for our kids and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt you are theirs too. . . .

I knew I was marrying someone that I loved and admired, but I didn't know the man you'd become. I didn't know the father you'd be or the partner you'd be in good times and bad. I didn't know how you'd hold our babies on their first day of life; I didn't know how you'd be during financial struggles and I didn't know how you'd hold my hand even though we just had a fight. I didn't know how you'd brush our daughters' hair or how you'd teach them all to work hard for their dreams.

I didn't know, but I'm so grateful now that I chose you.

Jess ends her emotional note by reassuring her husband that he's doing a great job: "I know that you question if you've done well, and let me tell you something: you've done so, so, well. You've done better than I could have expected. You have been my best and my favorite surprise."

A Celebrity Trainer's Weight-Loss Rule: 3 Miles or 30 Minutes

Before trainer Kit Rich became a Pilates instructor to the stars (and healthy-lifestyle ambassador for brands like Lucy), she was just a woman trying yet another crazy, extreme, or unhealthy diet in order to lose weight. "I tried everything," she told POPSUGAR, adding that she also suffered from eating disorders and body dysmorphia. "I was desperate to lose weight. So I would do, like what most women do, those freaking crazy juice diets. I would do all these extreme things, but it always brought me back to the other extreme."

After years of yo-yo dieting, Kit finally hit on her problem: she was working out in a way that wasn't sustainable. Her solution was one that helped her lose 30 pounds and one that she still shares with her students today, whether she's teaching a private class in LA or going on tour with a musician client. Her tip? Make it manageable. Specifically, Kit says that her mantra of "three miles or 30 minutes, every day" is what helped her finally break free from weight fluctuations and keep the pounds off for good. As in: run, walk, or hike your way to three miles a day, or do a 30-minute workout instead. "I really do believe wholeheartedly that the middle road is the way to go," she says. "Anything extreme is not long-lasting."

As a former athlete, this manageable mantra helped keep Kit from burning out on her workouts when she was trying to lose weight. "I come from a background of injury, and I had knee surgery, so you can't tell me to go and take some crazy bootcamp class," she says. "Because my knee will start to hurt, and then what's going to start to happen, I'm going to freak out that I won't be able to do that for the rest of my life." Instead, just telling yourself to do something little every day can help you get a hold of your health and your weight-loss goals. "Women need to feel empowered," she says. "They need to feel like what they're doing is something that they somewhat enjoy and that they can have a grip on. And that's why I believe in this three or 30 rule."

Priyanka Chopra's Quantico One-Piece Will Induce Major Swimsuit Envy

Priyanka Chopra has been one of our favorite style stars for quite some time now, but the actress just proved her ability to induce major outfit envy both when she's gliding down the red carpet and when she's acting on the TV screen.

In a recent episode of ABC's Quantico, Priyanka's character, Alex, has a poolside scene with Owen, played by Blair Underwood. During the scene, she wears a zip-up swimsuit that we want to add to our quickly growing collection of beach-ready one-pieces. With black stripe detailing on the sides and a zippered closure in front, her white suit gives off sporty vibes. Plus, Priyanka's bod looks bangin' in it!

Her bathing suit kind of reminds us of that hot mesh suit Jennifer Lawrence wore in Passengers. Read on to see Priyanka rocking the one-piece on screen, then pick up the exact design or similar options when you scroll.

6 Places Kate Middleton Lived Before Becoming a Princess

Kate Middleton hasn't always resided in a 10-bedroom country estate or 21-room apartment at Kensington Palace. Long before meeting and marrying Prince William, Kate was just a regular girl who moved around with her family, studied abroad, lived in college dorms, and even shared a flat with her little sister. Here are all the places Kate lived before her life became a royal one.

  1. Berkshire, England: Kate was born to parents Michael and Carole Middleton at the ironically named Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. The upper-middle-class family lived in a modest, brick Victorian "with a cramped kitchen" in Bradfield Southend. They later purchased at Oak Acre, a five-bedroom Tudor-style country house in nearby Bucklebury, Berkshire.
  2. Amman, Jordan: While working as a flight dispatcher for British Airways, Michael and his family were relocated to Jordan. Kate lived there from 1984 to 1987.
  1. Wiltshire, England: Kate studied at Marlborough College, a coed boarding school, in 1996.
  2. Florence, Italy: After finishing her studies at Marlborough, 18-year-old Kate headed to Florence to study Italian and art history. She completed a three-month course at the British Institute of Florence in Palazzo dello Strozzino.
  3. Fife, Scotland: In 2001, Kate moved to Scotland to study at the University of St. Andrews and lived in three areas of on-campus student housing. It was at one of them, St Salvator's Hall, that she met Prince William. She went on to graduate with a master's degree in art history.
  4. London, England: Postcollege, Kate accepted a position as an accessory buyer with British retailer Jigsaw and moved into a flat in London's exclusive Chelsea neighborhood with her sister Pippa; Carole and Michael Middleton purchased the apartment in 2002 for all three of their children to live in. Pippa continued to reside there with their brother James well after Kate married Will and moved to a four-bedroom farmhouse on the Welsh island of Anglesey.

You'll Reconsider Tough-Loving Your Baby After Reading the Story Behind This Mother's Photo

This was from several weeks back, yes, I climbed in the crib in hopes to soothe my screaming, teething, blushed faced,...

Posted by Dayna Mager on Thursday, March 31, 2016

When cries from the baby monitor wake you in the middle of the night, do you run to your baby's room or let your little one cry it out? Parents who feel strongly about tough love may rethink their methods after learning the story behind this beautiful photo of a mother sleeping in her daughter's crib. Michigan-based photographer Dayna Mager posted the picture on her Facebook wall, which has gone viral for good reason.

Her husband Matt snapped the shot of Dayna and their 5-month-old daughter, Luella, when he found them sleeping in her crib after coming home from work. In her caption, Dayna wrote that she remembered the promise she made to Luella after being so deeply moved by a missionary's story at a worship concert she and Matt once attended. "Yes, I climbed in the crib in hopes to soothe my screaming, teething, blushed faced, and tear soaked little girl."

The missionary spoke about visiting a nursery in a Ugandan orphanage, where he saw more than 100 cribs with babies. Astounded by the complete silence, he asked why he didn't hear a single cry, in which the host replied, "After about a week of them being here, and crying out for countless hours, they eventually stop when they realize no one is coming for them . . ."

That was the moment that changed Dayna entirely. "I broke. I literally could have picked up pieces of my heart scattered about the auditorium floor. But instead, it stirred in me a longing, a hunger." She wrote:

"We came home, and that night as Luella rested her tiny little 10lb body against mine and we rocked, I made a promise to her. A promise that I would always come to her . . . We will show her through our tears and frustrations at times, that it is okay to cry, and it's OK to feel. That we will always be a safe place, and we will always come to her."

Dayna shared on HuffPost Parents how the missionary's life-changing story has made her "cherish even the sleepless nights and scream tantrums." And with 62,000 reactions and almost 23,000 shares, Dayna's photo and words have clearly struck a chord with other parents.

Reinvent Your S'mores Tradition With These New Variations

Though nothing surpasses the nostalgic perfection of the classic s'more, these three new s'mores variations as found in the July/August issue of Martha Stewart Living help us live by the adage "S'more is s'more." Just do as Martha and organize a "bonfire box" before the party, laying out the crunchy cookies in one row, the chocolates in another section, and the chewy mallows in one corner. While you can always roast marshmallows via the old-fashioned stick method, my preferred mallow-roasting tools are these reusable telescoping extended skewers. Now, less talk, s'more combos!

The S'mores

  1. For someone who doesn't like chocolate: Lars' Own Swedish Ginger Snaps + Three Tarts Vanilla Bean Marshmallow + lemon curd
  2. For the peanut butter fiend: graham crackers + marshmallow + Reese's
  3. For those craving Thin Mints: Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers + marshmallow + Andes mint

It is quite alright if this image causes momentary heart palpitations. It's the intended effect. Who volunteers to try all three?

Nina Dobrev Shows Off Her Insane Figure During Another Fun-Filled Day in Hawaii

The 28-year-old is currently on the island to film a documentary on shark conservation. She was spotted with shark behavior specialist and conservationist Ocean Ramsey as they looked over their footage, which Nina gave fans a glimpse of on Instagram. Uh-Oh, There's a Big Issue With Those Cute Pictures of Prince George on a Plane

You guys, we should have known those adorable pictures of baby Prince George smashing his sweet face against the plane windows when he travels were just a little too good to be true. Those pictures from the royal family's trip to Canada last year with George wearing his big headphones and pressing his nose against the window to wave goodbye were actually part of a huge breach of royal protocol. According to royal rules, two direct heirs - Prince William and Prince George - should never fly on a plane together so that the lineage is protected in case of an accident.

Prince William and Kate Middleton first brought Prince George on a plane with them when they did a royal tour of Australia and New Zealand in 2014, which partially made headlines due to the broken royal rule. However, it was thought that the royal couple didn't want to travel separately from 9-month-old George for two reasons: they wanted to keep the family together, and it was more cost efficient to all travel together.

William and Kate, who are no strangers to bending the rules, didn't seem too bothered by this one either, considering they packed up Prince George - and Princess Charlotte - for their 2016 trip to Canada, traveling on several planes as a family. Only time will tell if the royal family chooses to adhere to the royal rule as Prince George gets older. In the meantime, we just hope he keeps making those adorable faces in plane windows.

10 Reasons You Should Read Aloud to Big Kids, Too

Everyone likes a good story. Regan McMahon of Common Sense Media breaks down the benefits of reading aloud to your kids, even when they can do it themselves.

Every parent knows that it's good to read to kids when they're little. It helps babies, toddlers, and preschoolers develop spoken language, recognize letters and words, and get ready for kindergarten. But it's actually beneficial to read to kids even after they can read on their own. Research shows that continued reading aloud after age 5 (and well beyond) improves reading and listening skills and academic performance (and is also loads of fun!).

According to Scholastic's 2016 Kids & Family Reading Report -- a national survey of children age 6 to 17 and their parents that explores attitudes and behaviors around books and reading -- 59 percent of parents read to kids from birth to age 5, but only 38 percent read to their 5- to 8-year-olds, and a scant 17 percent keep reading to kids age 9 to 11. Yet most kids age 6 to 11 (and most parents) report that they enjoy read-aloud time. Everyone loves a good story, whether it's in the form of a paper book, an ebook, an audiobook, or even a podcast.

Find suggestions for great family-tested reads on our list Amazing Read-Aloud Books for Older Kids. And for even more ideas, see our lists Read-Aloud Books and 50 Books All Kids Should Read Before They're 12.

Here are 10 key reasons to keep reading aloud to older kids:

It builds vocabulary. Kids who are read to encounter more words -- and learn how to recognize and pronounce them -- than they would by just being spoken to. And studies show that having a large vocabulary can help kids perform better in school.

It improves comprehension. When kids are engaged and invested in the story, they understand it more thoroughly. You can check in as you go to see whether your kid understands what's going on and ask what they think will happen next, what they think of the characters, and so on.

It's wonderful for bonding. Positive experiences and warm memories of hearing stories from a loved one can inspire a lifelong love of reading. Award-wining novelist T.C. Boyle told a crowd at the 2017 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books that he learned to read not in school but from his mom reading to him -- and that when he reads now, he still hears her voice in his head.

It provides positive modeling. Kids learn through observation and modeling. Reading aloud lets them hear what language sounds like. You can also model how to analyze a story as you read and how to figure out the meaning of a word using context clues.

It improves listening skills. Reading aloud nurtures appreciation of rich language and helps train kids' ears for understanding instruction in school. According to educator Jim Trelease, author of The Read-Aloud Handbook, "A child's reading level doesn't catch up to his listening level until eighth grade."

It's a way to discover the classics. Kids may be put off by the challenging language of Shakespeare or the old-fashioned settings of Jane Austen in school, but in a cozy setting at home, you can help the text come alive as you take on different characters' voices and fill in historical context.

It helps with discussing difficult issues. Kids may tune out if you lecture them about what to do and what not to do. But if you read a story that shows characters grappling with serious conflicts and the consequences of their actions -- or facing bullying, racism, religious or ethnic bias, or gender discrimination -- it's a way into talking about complex, topical matters.

It's a way to introduce different genres. Reading aloud lets parents introduce kids to different types of books and stories, helping kids learn which kinds they'd like to choose for themselves. Reading a variety of material boosts all kinds of learning. Try poetry, satire, manga, and autobiographies.

It's a portal into your kids' interests. Reading books on subjects or in genres kids love (sci-fi, fantasy, mysteries, thrillers, graphic novels, Norse mythology, Minecraft, whatever!) gives you something to share and discuss, while also putting you on a level playing field -- rather than you always being the teacher who knows more than they do.

It sparks curiosity and a thirst for learning. Nonfiction books make great read-alouds, too. For older kids and teens, try books or articles by journalists covering current or recent events and world issues. And there are lots of popular histories that are so engaging they read like nail-biting fiction.

Disneyland Has Droolworthy Mangonadas, So We Can Die Happy

Lately, Disney has been the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to incredible Latinx foods. From deep-fried elote to micheladas at Disneyland, we didn't think things could get any better, until we saw that Clarabelle's Ice Cream at Disney California Adventure added mangonadas to its menu!

The delectable dessert comes with "two scoops of mango sorbet layered with Chamoy sauce, fresh mango chunks, Tajín seasoning, and lime juice," according to the website, and sells for $8. Photos show massive chunks of mango along with hefty portions of sauce and seasoning, so we have high hopes for this addition to the Disney parks menu. And according to people enjoying their own Disney mangonada on Instagram, the frozen dessert is everything you could want (and more) from a theme park snack.

What did we do to deserve this? Must have been something good! Read on for more droolworthy pictures of the frozen mango dessert, then add it to your comfort-food Disney bucket list. Yummmmmm!

Don't Leave For the Beach This Weekend Without One of These Safe Drugstore SPFs

As plenty of cautionary tales have taught us, no Summer beauty bag is complete without SPF. And while there are plenty of luxurious (and pricey!) options available online for the planners among us, that doesn't mean procrastinators or spontaneous day-trippers are out of luck. If you walk down any drugstore sunscreen aisle, you'll find dozens of options. Feeling daunted? We reached out to Sonya Lunder, author of the 2017 Environmental Working Group's Guide to Sunscreens, who filled us in on her top low-cost SPFs and what exactly makes them "safe."

Making the Cut

When curating the safe sunscreen guide, Lunder and her team kept a few obvious factors in mind, such as UVB/UVA protection and the amount of time the product stays active after application. But it doesn't stop there; to be certified by the EWG, Lunder said that an SPF must be "free of hormone disruptors and irritating or allergenic ingredients." To get the EWG's highest green rating, products must boast an impressive blend of "a good safety profile and UV filtering, according to analysis." And even the tiniest of beachgoers can benefit; just today, the EWG released a list of green-rated baby-specific SPFs.

Facing the Facts

So if you're looking to give the department store (or your wallet) a break, Lunder recommended two cheap SPFs that you can probably walk down the block and buy right now. Goddess Garden Facial Natural Sunscreen Tube SPF 30 ($13) is made from zinc and combats rays for up to 40 minutes. Composed of organic ingredients such as essential oils and green tea, it works especially well on sensitive or dry skin.

Protect Your Beach Bod

For the rest of your body, the EWG recommends Bare Republic SPF 30 Clearscreen Sport Sunscreen Gel ($15). It lasts on skin for up to two hours, so you don't need to worry if you get swept away by your beach read or volleyball game. Plus, it has a natural coconut mango scent, which even makes your weekend staycation feel like a tropical paradise.

10 Facts About Pippa Middleton's Wedding That Will Make You Feel Like You Were a Guest

Pippa Middleton wed her longtime boyfriend, financier James Matthews, in a gorgeous ceremony in Berkshire, England, on May 20. While details were initially scarce, we've been getting little tidbits here and there now that the wedding is over. Read on to see what they are.

  1. Pippa received a royal title after tying the knot. While she didn't become a duchess like her older sister, Pippa will now be able to use the courtesy title of Mrs. Matthews of Glen Affric the younger. James is heir to the Scottish title of Laird of Glen Affric (a position his father currently holds), and once his dad dies, he will become the Laird of Glen Affric, making Pippa the Lady Glen Affric.
  2. Pippa and James left their ceremony in a super-rare car. After the ceremony, the happy couple drove away in a Jaguar E-Type sports car. According to Pippa's uncle Gary Goldsmith, it was the first one ever made.
  3. Pippa stuck to tradition and wore something old. Pippa sported the same Robinson Pelham pear-cut diamond drop earrings she wore to Kate and Prince William's wedding back in 2011.
  4. Pippa and James's wedding party included a reality TV star. James's younger brother, Spencer, who starred on the British reality show Made in Chelsea, served as his best man. Prince George acted as one of the page boys, along with Casimir Tatos, Edward Sebire, and William Ward, while Princess Charlotte served as one of the flower girls with Countess Philippa Hoyos, Lily French, and Avia Horner.
  5. Pippa followed in her sister's footsteps. Like Kate, Pippa read more modern vows, omitting the word "obey" from them.
  6. The reception took place inside a glass palace in Pippa's parents' backyard. Not only did the glass palace take three days to build, but it reportedly cost $100,000.
  7. There was a Beatles tribute. Guests reportedly broke out into a Beatles sing-along during Spencer's best man speech.
  8. Guests reportedly had to use secret passwords to get into the reception. Following the ceremony, the 350 guests made their way to Bucklebury Village Hall, where they parked their cars and men were offered fresh shirts if they wanted to change from their ceremony attire. They were then driven to the Middletons' estate, but not before each guest had their photo ID checked and gave a password, which was different for each attendee.
  9. There was a special Supermarine Spitfire performance. The crowd was treated to an acrobatic aerial performance by a British single-seat fighter used in World War II.
  10. Kate added her personal touch. According to E!, the duchess herself drew a picture of the church on the wedding programs.

The Surprising Way Queen Elizabeth II Is Related to Husband Prince Philip

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's nearly 70-year marriage has been the subject of such speculation that their early days as a couple have been turned into a new Netflix series, The Crown. Although most people know the basics about how the royal couple fell in love, there's a surprising, little-known tidbit that we sometimes forget: Queen Elizabeth and the duke of Edinburgh are cousins. They share the same great-great-grandparents, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who were first cousins themselves. Although that might seem odd today, it was a fairly common practice for the royals back then since many marriages were done to increase influence in state affairs or to ally with foreign powers. Regardless of their familial relation, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's love story is one for the ages.

When Elizabeth's father, King George VI, visited a Naval college in Dartmouth in 1939, he brought his 13-year-old daughter along to take in the sights. While the King attended to business, a cadet named Philip Mountbatten - Elizabeth's third cousin and a Greek prince - was given the task of showing the future queen around. He must have made quite the impression, because Elizabeth was instantly enamored. In a two-page letter sent to author Betty Shew, who was writing a book about Elizabeth's wedding to Philip in 1947, the then-princess described how she first fell in love with Philip:

"The first time I remember meeting Philip was at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, in July 1939, just before the war. (We may have met before at the coronation or the Duchess of Kent's wedding, but I don't remember.) I was 13 years of age and he was 18 and a cadet just due to leave. He joined the Navy at the outbreak of war, and I only saw him very occasionally when he was on leave - I suppose about twice in three years. Then when his uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Mountbatten, were away he spent various weekends away with us at Windsor. Then he went to the Pacific and Far East for two years."

The couple got married on Nov. 20, 1947, and the rest is history.

8 Photos of Chris Pine and His Famous Dad That Prove the Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree

Chris Pine has been making us swoon since he first burst onto the scene in the 2006 romantic comedy Just My Luck, but his very first TV appearance actually happened when he was just 3 years old. In case you weren't aware, Chris's dad is none other than Robert Pine - the actor who famously played Sgt. Joseph Getraer on NBC's CHiPs in the late '70s and early '80s - and in 1983, Chris joined his dad on the show as a boy named Christopher. The two teamed up for an adorable duet of "Hurry, Hurry Climb the Ladder" and melted hearts everywhere. Of course, this isn't the only glimpse we've gotten of their close bond. Robert often steps out to support his son at his movie premieres, and back in May 2014, the veteran actor said he knew "from the very first moment" that Chris would make it big in Hollywood. Aw!

Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Messi! The Argentinian Soccer Player Is Married

Lionel Messi is officially a married man. The Argentinian soccer player tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Antonella Roccuzzo. The two got married in front of 260 guests and 150 journalists in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina. Among the guests were some very famous faces, including Shakira and Gerard Piqué (who plays for FC Barcelona with Messi), Neymar Jr., and Dani Alves.

The happy couple, who are childhood sweethearts and have two kids, posed together on the red carpet (yes, there was a red carpet!), and while Messi looked dapper in a suit and silver tie, it was Antonella's wedding dress that took our breath away. The bride wore a custom-made Rosa Clará design in a mermaid style with a "deep heart-shaped neckline" that was full of delicate lace flowers, including a lace T-shaped back that connected with her long and flowy train. Looking at these photos and videos of Mr. and Mrs. Messi will fill you with joy.

Rainbow Ramen Exists, and It's Truly Magical!

In this generation that eats with their iPhones first, restaurants are advertising "rainbow," "unicorn," and "magical" to attract curious foodies looking to capture that perfect food-porn shot to make their followers salivate. Being one of those people who's constantly seeking out trends, I can say with certainty that a lot of them don't taste nearly as good as they look. Insert Rainbow Ramen, a new food offering from Chef Alan Valera at E.A.K. Ramen in Los Angeles. Originally conceived as a Pride Month nod of support, this cold Summer noodle dish does look incredibly pretty. Topped with that beautiful array of rainbow-colored veggies, two pieces of lotus root, and a sweet bean paste ground pork, it inspires snapping before eating.

But then you take a bite. The refreshingly chilled spicy-sweet soup base made from soy milk, sesame, and chili hits your lips. The chew on the thick, bold noodles is the perfect density to soak up the base, and the crunch from the fresh vegetables make this dish an absolutely refreshing delight for a hot Summer day. I hope this delight becomes a long-lasting trend, as it's not only delicious, but it's a great excuse to eat your fill of fresh veggies, something I'm sure a lot of us could use on a more frequent basis.

The Completely Addictive Method of Grilling Steak

The reverse sear method for cooking steak is arguably one of the best indoor techniques, and a similar concept can be applied when grilling steak outdoors on a charcoal grill. Instead of slow-cooking in the oven, the steak is first smoked (positioned away from the charcoal), and instead of searing on a skillet, the steak is finished directly over the charcoal for just a few minutes on each side. You're left with perfectly juicy steak and a crisp exterior, no burnt bits or accidental overcooking. You can do this, grill master, you.

Here's what you'll need:

  • A charcoal grill
  • Hardwood lump charcoal
  • Gelled alcohol
  • Stick lighter
  • Barbecue tongs
  • Mesquite wood chunks (or any other type)
  • 2 (12-ounce) strip steaks (at least 1-inch thick)
  • Ghee or clarified butter
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground pepper

My Before-and-After Might Look Like Weight Loss, but I Gained Over 10 Pounds

The author (right) with her personal trainer

Imagine cutting out sugar, eating cleaner than you ever have in your entire life, working out daily, running half marathons, lifting heavier weights, getting eight hours of sleep a night, drinking plenty of water, and following literally every weight-loss tip you've ever heard or read about - and then not only NOT losing a single pound, but gaining more than 10 percent of your body weight in pounds.

Until recently, I've been about the same weight since the ninth grade. I'm a pretty tiny human, and I've always been petite - at 26 years old and standing only 5 foot 2 (and three quarters!), I still get some clothes from the kids section. So when I began my fitness journey, I never set out to lose weight, but I guess I had anticipated that maybe I would drop a few pounds as a side effect of getting healthier.

About two and a half years ago, I started learning healthy recipes, eating cleaner, learning how to run (and what a burpee is), trying yoga, cutting down on alcohol (almost completely), and living a healthier lifestyle. I noticed changes almost immediately in my body and brain, and I felt fantastic.

This past year and a half, after moving to San Francisco and working as a fitness writer, healthy living became my main priority and focus. Workout classes have become my favorite pastime, and I love grabbing a smoothie or healthy bite with friends. I meal prep, am more conscious than ever of what goes in my body, and work out at *least* five times a week. I even gave up ALL sugar for six weeks this past Spring.

It was at that time that I was cutting out sugar that I also had an annual checkup with my doctor scheduled, which just so happens to be the only time I ever use a scale (I don't own one, and I have never weighed myself regularly). I didn't pay any mind when my doctor asked me to step on the scale for her as she took notes . . . until the arm on that clunky, nearly-ancient metal contraption shot way, way past where I thought it would. Roughly 11 pounds past.

"Before" and Now

Does it look like I gained 11 pounds?

While it might sound ridiculous to someone who's been on a mission to lose 20, 50, or even 100 pounds, gaining 11 pounds is quite a bit when you're my size. And when you've been the exact same weight for about 12 years, seeing such a significant change can feel jarring.

Like I mentioned, I wasn't trying to lose weight, but to gain such a significant percentage in spite of all the effort I had put into my body was a huge shock. It felt like a slap in the face or a gut punch - and then I was immediately ashamed of how devastated I felt. I'm constantly preaching body positivity. "Love yourself no matter what you weigh! Eff the scale! A number does not define you!" I do mean those things, but then the second I put a toe on the scale, I crumbled completely when the number caught me off guard.

It was at that moment I realized that without ever acknowledging it, I had been rooting such a large part of my identity in my weight . . . but why? Why did I tie myself to this one number?

I was so disappointed in myself for not being stronger mentally and emotionally. I felt a sense of responsibility to my friends, community, and women around me to be stronger, and I felt that I had failed everyone, including myself in that moment.

I anxiously looked back at my photos from the past year to try to figure out if I "looked" heavier, as I frantically texted my closest friends for affirmation. Long story short, I came to realize (through the help of friends and my personal trainer) that the weight gain was healthy, and I had lost pounds of fat yet gained pounds of muscle, and that I had nothing to worry about, physically. But that's not the point.

"Before" and Now

In one moment, with one number, I allowed myself to be distracted from all the amazing things that I accomplished in the past year.

My resting heart rate is lower. My VO2 max is higher. My mile time is nearly HALF of what it was just three years ago. I ran more half-marathons and didn't get as tired. I can do two SoulCycle classes in a row and keep up the whole time. I can finally (almost!) get that full extension of Bird of Paradise in my yoga classes. I'm lifting heavier weights than I ever could've imagined. I learned proper deadlift form. I can see my abs without flexing (whaaat!). I'm healthier overall. I feel good. I feel strong.

The scale will never be able to tell my story.

It's clear I need to work on my self-esteem; I want to be stronger so I can be a better example for the people I love and for the women who look to me for strength. Looking back at my moment on the scale, feeling that sense of disappointment in my lack of emotional fortitude, I'm trying to channel what I learned from my chat with Tracee Ellis Ross: self-acceptance can be more forgiving than self-love. She told me, "Self-acceptance for me makes space for me to still be a whole person and to be compassionate and kind and loving to myself, even in moments that have pain in them."

I also truly feel that culturally, we need to shift our focus away from "how many pounds up or down" we are to how we feel and to all the commitment and work we put into loving ourselves and treating our bodies right. Before-and-after weight-loss stories DO tell this, but oftentimes our fixation is on the weight - the "goal" - rather than the journey itself. We're taught that weight loss is good and that weight gain is bad, regardless of what we did to get to that point or what kind of shape we're in.

I heard a quote at this year's Dare to Bare SF (a body-positivity festival hosted by Movemeant Foundation) from SoulCycle instructor Kamelle Mills: "Your body is telling a story about your soul . . . your spirit. What kind of story are you telling?" I know my body is telling a WAY better story than that stupid scale.

Bachelor in Paradise: Everything That Happened After Season 4 Was Suspended

Image Source: Getty / Rich Fury

This post has been updated with new information.

Bachelor in Paradise's fourth season was temporarily suspended following an incident involving contestants Corinne Olympios and DeMario Jackson. The pair are at the heart of a heated controversy over a drunken sexual encounter that went wrong on the reality show's set, which had everyone from host Chris Harrison to former Bachelor contestants speaking out. The details of what exactly went down are still unconfirmed, although Warner Bros. now reports it never found any proof of misconduct in the footage, and DeMario denies all allegations. Here's a timeline of everything that's happened since the news first broke:

  • Production on Bachelor in Paradise is suspended. ABC announced they'd halted production on Sunday, June 11, and Warner Bros. released a statement on the matter shortly afterwards. "We have become aware of allegations of misconduct on the set of Bachelor in Paradise in Mexico," they said. "We have suspended production and we are conducting a thorough investigation of these allegations. Once the investigation is complete, we will take appropriate responsive action."
  • Rumors about Corinne and DeMario start on Twitter. LA Times writer Amy Kaufman tweeted out information she got from a source close to Bachelor in Paradise, who revealed production on the show was shut down because of Corinne and DeMario getting physical in the pool. "On the first day of production, Sunday, DeMario and Corinne got extremely drunk, per my source," she wrote. "Corinne came up to DeMario at the bar and kissed him. They proceeded to the pool, where they got naked. From this point forward, things turned into 'soft-core porn.' They did not have sex. But it was very raunchy."
  • A producer on the show takes action. A producer who witnessed the hook-up was apparently uncomfortable with what happened in the pool and is now suing the production for misconduct. E! News reported that the producer in question filed the complaint without personally witnessing the event or watching the footage on tape.
  • BIP season four cast members leave Mexico. According to blogger Reality Steve (Steve Carbone), cast members were flown out of Sayulita, Mexico, where the season was filming, to Houston on that Sunday.
  • Disturbing details about the hook-up come to light. By June 12, a source told People that what happened was more serious than simply a drunken hook-up; Corinne may have been too drunk to consent during the sexual encounter. "The show absolutely values the primacy of consent, and this instance it appears as though conduct allegedly occurred without the proper consent having been given," one source revealed to the magazine.
  • BIP contestants react. An anonymous contestant on the show also spoke to People on June 12, revealing that the other cast members are angry the situation escalated to that point at all. "People are pissed, and not just at DeMario. We're pissed that this whole thing happened," the contestant said. "They could have seen that she was drinking too much and that he was taking advantage. They could have stopped this before it got this far. But they decided to let it go, and let it happen, and see what happened? So, I'm angry at the show, and everyone else is too." Past and current members of the franchise further aired their grievances and offered messages of support on Twitter.

  • Conflicting reports about the nature of Corinne and DeMario's relationship emerge. Despite TMZ's early report that "everything was fine" between the pair after the drunken encounter and that DeMario and Corinne were on good terms, sources close to Corinne denied it. They alleged to the website that she "was in a blackout state" when the hook-up happened and doesn't remember a thing but is placing most of the blame on the producers for not stepping in.
  • The BIP cast was put in lockdown after the incident. A contestant told People on June 12 that the cast was put on lockdown just days after arriving in Mexico. "We were told to stay in a certain part of the [resort] while they figured out what the hell had happened," the contestant said. "We knew something bad had happened; there was a dark energy that came around the house. You have to understand that we weren't even there a week." After one of them asked a producer if the season would resume, they were told no. "She said that there was an investigation going on, and that could take days, weeks, or even months."
  • Chris Harrison warns fans of "misinformation out there" regarding controversy. Longtime host Chris Harrison released a statement on June 13. "Normally with a situation like this I would not say anything until the incident is fully resolved, but with all the rumors and misinformation being put out there, I don't find that to be possible anymore," he began, before noting that everyone's well-being is of utmost importance. "It is with this thought in mind that we made the decision to suspend filming. An investigation into the situation was started immediately . . . they're moving quickly to gather all the facts, and once that's done, a clear, concise decision can be made about where we go from here." He finished his statement by noting that "there's a a lot of misinformation out there" about the incident in the press, and that he and the rest of the Bachelor in Paradise team "urge everyone to be patient" until their investigation is complete.
  • Corinne breaks her silence. Information about Corinne and DeMario had been coming only from anonymous sources up until Wednesday, June 14, when Corinne set the record straight via her publicist, Stan Rosenfield. "I am a victim and have spent the last week trying to make sense of what happened June 4. Although I have little memory of that night, something bad obviously took place," she said. "As a woman, this is my worst nightmare and it has now become my reality." She also explained that she's hired a full legal team, including high-powered Hollywood attorney Marty Singer.
  • DeMario comes out swinging with a statement criticizing rumors. "It's unfortunate that my character and family name has been assassinated this past week with false claims and malicious allegations," the 30-year-old contestant said via his publicist, Eve Sarkisyan-Nunn, on June 14. "I will be taking swift and appropriate legal action until my name is cleared and, per the advice of legal counsel, will be seeking all available remedies entitled to me under the laws."
  • A second producer files a complaint against BIP. Like the first producer who's suing the show, a second member of the production team has come forward to file a complaint about whether or not Corinne was able to give consent during her encounter with DeMario despite only hearing about what happened through second or third parties. Reality Steve reported on June 14 that "all parties involved are wishing they could take it back. They never thought it would reach a level that it did."
  • DeMario gets fired from his job. On June 15, DeMario told Inside Edition that, as a result of the allegations of sexual misconduct, he was fired from his job as an executive recruiter. "My character has been assassinated. My family name has been drug through the mud," he said, echoing his earlier statement. "The only thing I want is for the truth to come out. I feel like the truth will be able to come out in those videos . . . I don't blame anyone right now. All I want is the tapes."
  • Evan Bass pleads with ABC not to cancel the show. In a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter on June 17, Evan - who met fiancée Carly Waddell last season - defended BIP. "Bachelor in Paradise is my show. It's my jam. Personal redemption, lifelong friends and the woman of my dreams are just a few of the many takeaways I found living on set for weeks at the air-condition-less resort," he said, before noting that "as contestants, our actions and words are our responsibility, including alcohol consumption."
  • Marty Singer responds to allegations made by Jasmine Goode. After Jasmine, a fellow season four contestant, told E! News that Corinne had "forced herself" on three other male contestants the night she hooked up with DeMario, Corinne's lawyer responded via the same outlet. "Several cast members and producers have come forward confirming the facts disclosed by my client. If nothing improper occurred on the set, why was the production shut down within two days of production?" he said. "Shutting down production of a television series is almost unheard of. The investigation and subsequent shutting down of the series was initiated based on complaints made by producers on the set of Bachelor in Paradise."
  • Bachelor in Paradise resumes filming season four. While many assumed the drunken hook-up gone wrong between DeMario and Corinne meant season four was gone for good, apparently the footage of what happened yielded no evidence of misconduct and production on season four of the show will resume. Warner Bros. confirmed the news with a second official statement on June 20, noting that they conducted the investigation "with the assistance of an outside law firm" and that they do not intend to release the videotape of the incident. "We can say, however, that the tape does not support any charge of misconduct by a cast member," they said. "Nor does the tape show, contrary to many press reports, that the safety of any cast member was ever in jeopardy."

5 Notable "Heirs and Spares" in the British Royal Family

Not only does the adorable Princess Charlotte have the the most adorable uncle ever in Prince Harry, but on a deeper level, she also has someone who will always understand what it feels like to play backup to an older sibling who will one day be king. The royal family has always been keen to produce a "spare" to the heir so that if - heaven forbid - anything should happen to the elder sibling, the future of the monarchy can continue with the younger.

This has been the case with some incredibly notable monarchs - Henry VIII was actually the "spare" - but in modern times it has thankfully been less necessary, and so the younger sibling nudges further down the line of succession with every niece and nephew born. However the nature of a "spare" can create all sorts of issues; they are a vital cog in the royal machine as they grow up, but as soon as the the elder sibling starts having children of their own, their official role becomes less defined, with (as we have seen in the last five generations of the royal family) very mixed results.
