21 Things That Inevitably Happen When You Travel With Kids During the Holidays

My family usually hits the road for the holidays, heading to the beach with my extended family for a vacation that only in the last year (when my son was almost 4 and my daughter was almost 7) began to feel like one. Before that, it was a stressful trip that took so much time and energy to execute that if it wasn't for that alluring Florida sunshine, I might not have gone.

Between buying and wrapping gifts early so I could ship them to our destination in time for Santa's arrival to renting baby supplies we couldn't fit in our suitcases to throwing our rules about screen time and sugar consumption out the window, traveling with kids for the holidays is a jolly sh*tshow. But hey, the holidays are all about togetherness, right? And nothing brings more togetherness than being stuck in a tiny condo for a week (or even better, a car for an eight-hour-plus drive) with your toddlers. If you're planning a trip with your kids over the holidays - to Grandma's house or somewhere more exotic - here are 21 things you need to prepare yourself for.

6 Ways I Benefited From Turning Off My Phone For Just 1 Week

I've had a cell phone since I was 11. I know - let that sink in for a second. Post 9/11, my parents wanted to make sure my brother and I had a way to get in touch with them in case of emergencies, so for the past decade and a half, I've had a phone essentially super glued to my left hand. In essence, I've been conditioned.

This past year, I hit my threshold of feeling overwhelmed. I was so tuned into everything around me and around the world 24/7, responding to everyone within seconds, constantly available . . . that I forgot to tune into what I needed. As such, stress levels contributed to atrocious mental health, chronic illness, and a destroyed immune system.

I needed to do a hard reset, and not on my phone - on my life.

The reset started with clearing my calendar, finding a place to chill out and rest, and then digitally detoxing. Phase one: move apps like Instagram to new folders on my phone and put new apps in their former places to see how often I was mindlessly opening them. Phase two: delete social media apps temporarily. Phase three: no tech for one week. GASP! I know. Here's what went down. (Note: this also went down on a week I was not at work - truly tech-free!)

Priyanka Chopra Just Dropped a Major Clue About Her Wedding Dress Designer

Priyanka Chopra covers Vogue's January 2019 issue at just the right time - right in the midst of her career boom and her wedding to Nick Jonas. It's safe to say Priyanka is thriving, and as she detailed her love story with Nick to the magazine, she revealed one or two things about the memories she has with Nick from fashion industry events.

"Ralph Lauren invited them to attend the 2017 Met gala together - not knowing anything about their months-long text flirtation. And yes, they met for a proper drink a week before the Met at the Carlyle hotel in New York," the feature confirms.

It was at that Met Gala that Ralph Lauren sent Priyanka up the stairs in the most showstopping look of the night. The trench gown, equipped with a long train, quickly became a viral internet meme and was conveniently shortened into an afterparty minidress.

Needless to say, Ralph Lauren is clearly a part of Nick and Priyanka's relationship timeline, so we wouldn't be surprised if the designer created something for the actress that sweeps the floor, then magically transforms into a mini for dancing at the reception.

Ahead, see Priyanka's shots from Vogue, then admire some of her gorgeous moments in Ralph Lauren.

Sorry, but Victoria Beckham's Tweed Shoes Kinda Put Your Glitter Heels to Shame

What's this?! Victoria Beckham stepped out for a late dinner at Carbone in NYC wearing a caramel drop-waist dress that revealed a subtle hint of lingerie. But we were more focused on the designer's cherry accessories than that little detail - a suede clutch that drew attention to her tweed Balenciaga pumps ($714), which were distressed around the edges and adorned with a gold button. These puppies laugh at Dorothy's sparkly red slippers!

Who needs glitter when you can opt for something a touch more sophisticated but equally, if not more, noticeable? Victoria coordinated her manicure with the shoes, too, which might not have been intentional but brought her evening ensemble full circle. Read on for another peek at the holiday heels you must now add to your wardrobe, then proceed to do so.

Mandy Moore's Sparkly Ring Is Unique and One of a Kind - Just Like Her Wedding Dress

For her wedding to Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith, Mandy Moore looked absolutely stunning in a Rodarte gown. Mandy fulfilled her desire for something completely unique and nontraditional by wearing pink on her wedding day. While her ruffled gown (which was embellished with little polka dots and had a gathered floral design around her waistline) was truly one of a kind, so is her new wedding ring.

Mandy showed off her wedding band, which appears to have another rock on it, while shopping in Los Angeles. She accessorized her ring with a comfy gray sweater, jeans, cheetah-print Golden Goose sneakers, and a bright red headband that matched her lipstick. Read on to get a closer look at her wedding band.

She finished off her festive ensemble with white heels, a stack of gold bracelets, and a bold red lip. Read on to see all angles of her outfit and shop similar versions for your closet.

1 Look at Victoria Beckham's "Optical Illusion" Pants, and You'll Want a Pair For Yourself

Victoria Beckham is seeing red this holiday season, and so are we. After having fooled us not once but twice, the British designer pulled yet another trick out of her bag when she wore bright red pants, which made her look like she had infinitely long legs.

"I'm actually really obsessed with these pants from my pre collection," she explained on her Instagram Stories. "Because I've got a really really high shoe under them, and I look like I've got really long legs, which, in actual fact, I don't have. It's an optical illusion."

Simply paired with a striped sweater ($750) from her own collection, her Eva suede clutch ($1,855), black sunglasses, and platform heels, Victoria's red trousers looked incredibly chic, and I would be lying if I said I didn't immediately try to find a pair for myself. Read on to get a closer look at VB's latest ensemble, then shop her exact pants, as well as similar options.

This Bollywood Actress Wore Not 1 but 5 Jaw-Dropping Wedding Outfits

Bollywood's golden couple are officially off the market! Deepika Padukone tied the knot with fellow actor Ranveer Singh in the most elaborate Indian wedding we've ever seen. The stunning couple jet-set all the way to Lake Como for their nuptials, and trust me when I say their outfits were straight out of a movie.

The festivities comprised a mehendi ceremony, a prewedding ceremony where the bride's hands and feet are decorated with henna, and two separate wedding ceremonies: a Konkani Phool Muddi for Deepika's faith and an Anand Karaj for Ranveer's. For the mehendi ceremony, Deepika wore a blush-pink traditional outfit by renowned Indian designer Sabyasachi. At their Konkani wedding ceremony, the bride wore a red and gold silk saree from The House of Angadi. Finally, for the Anand Karaj ceremony, Deepika wore a gorgeous crimson lehenga from Sabyasachi that was covered with intricate embroidery and took months to create.

If you're thinking that's when the celebrations ended, you're wrong. Once the happy couple returned from Italy, they were spotted wearing Sabyasachi ensembles while arriving at their home in Mumbai. Since the couple had to invite so many people, they hosted two separate receptions: one in Bengaluru, where Deepika is from, and another in Mumbai.

For the first reception, the actress wore a beautiful gold, silk saree from The House of Angadi, designed by K Radharaman. She then ended her wedding celebrations in Mumbai wearing a breathtaking white, embroidered ensemble that had a long train. Read on to see all of the stunning outfits.

Something's Missing From the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, and You Already Know What It Is

The last time I walked into Victoria's Secret and treated myself to red silk coordinates for Valentine's Day, it was because I wanted to feel sexy. That's what I love about the brand: it encourages women to embrace their inner sexiness, and I think that's important. Whether it's buying a new push-up bra or investing in one of the signature VS body scents, a woman should make herself feel desirable by shopping for underthings, if that's what she wants. At Victoria's Secret, there are so many high-quality pieces that cater to a wide range of tastes. Every time I walk into the store, my eyes widen at some sort of luxurious looking lingerie set (I really love shopping for lingerie).

Maybe I made the wrong selection on this aforementioned Valentine's Day. The push-up bra, strappy panties, and satin sash that was somehow supposed to wrap through a loop somewhere, then crisscross around my midriff and tuck into the waist belt (What?) ended up being a $150 look I simply couldn't pull off. I definitely didn't look like Lily Aldridge in this thing, but according to the images on the website, it should've been at least possible to wear correctly. Even though I bought the right cup size and I definitely know my waist measurements, the ensemble just wasn't right for me. It just didn't fit - my confidence level, more than anything.

At this point, I have exactly three unused Victoria's Secret gift cards tucked away in my wallet, and there's a good chance they've expired. It's not because I forgot about them - those glittery pink rectangles stand out way more than my office building entry pass and even my Frozen-themed Disney Visa. And it's not because I don't like Victoria's Secret. But the image the brand has projected lately and the lineup of Angels - all of whom have virtually the same figure - feel a little bit discouraging.

That's not to say I don't look forward to the annual VS runway, or that I don't understand the excitement behind finding out who's opening each section of the show. If you follow celebrity relationships and you love the personalities of all the different models, it's always interesting when one of them is best friends with the performer (Remember Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift's adorable interaction in 2014?) or if, perhaps, the dude singing on stage is the hot new Angel's ex (flashback to Bella Hadid and The Weeknd). With all the glitz and the confetti that falls on the scene, this spectacle is a form of entertainment, and it's damn fun to watch. But it's impossible to ignore how similar the women all look as they strut on by.

The Prototypical Angel

I've met a lot of Victoria's Secret models in the flesh, and they really do look exactly like you see in the pictures. They're really that tall; they really have that flawless skin, the hair you want after a visit to the salon but never end up with, and that toned-enough-for-a-six-pack but thin-enough-to-look-capital-S-skinny ab situation. They really don't appear to have any cellulite.

Of course, these women have access to camera-friendly, air-brushed makeup and quality body glitter and cover-up, and I haven't seen them all in a thong, but I've seen a bunch of them wearing little to nothing up close and attended the Victoria's Secret Fashion Shows. I can promise you that my body looks so different from theirs in lingerie, I might as well be another species.

And here's the thing: I'm petite, and while I have athletic legs, I am not particularly curvy. What about the women who are? Do they want anything to do with Victoria's Secret? Do they feel angry at or limited by the photos of the Angels on the retailer's site? Do they roll their eyes at the girls on the runway or feel saddened by the lack of diversity? My guess is that, like me, they do.

Where Are All the Curve Models?

Victoria's Secret is America's largest lingerie company. It's owned by the Les Wexner and family business L Brands, which has a current net worth of $5 billion. It's everywhere - plastered on one of the biggest billboards in Times Square, on your TV screen, and in the pages of the magazines you read.

While the runways at Fashion Week are continuing to become more diverse - at Christian Siriano, Chromat, and Prabal Gurung, to name a select few - there is still no cemented acceptance of difference in the fashion industry, only the possibility of acknowledgment. Many designers make an effort by including just one curve model on the runway. In my opinion, that is absolutely not enough. But at Victoria's Secret, there isn't just one curve model - there are none.

In Victoria's Secret's defense, the brand has made it a point to include women of color and various backgrounds and ethnicities in its casting - both on the runway and in shoots - but they still all seem to fit a certain "look," as far as size is concerned.

Curve models with large social media platforms have publicly acknowledged, in various ways, that they realize they don't fit the Victoria's Secret mold. It was Ashley Graham who, in 2017, posted a photo of herself on Instagram modeling for Addition Elle, a size-inclusive lingerie brand she works with and designs for, on the exact same day the VS show was being filmed in Shanghai. She wrote, "Got my wings! My #AdditionElle wings! #ThickThighsSaveLives." Curve model Tabria Majors has also re-created Victoria's Secret campaigns in order to "revisit the conversation of average-sized women being represented in mainstream media."

Of course, we can't be positive that Ashley Graham was taking a jab at the brand, but she was certainly comparing another popular lingerie line to the powerhouse that is Victoria's Secret. I've been to an Addition Elle runway show, which includes models of all shapes and sizes, and there's something so comfortable about seeing them debut the new bras and panties. When they walk, their butt cheeks jiggle. A lot of them have gorgeous pear figures, and they're rocking flattering bustiers or camisoles that accentuate and draw attention to body parts of their choice. "Yeah," I thought when I saw them. "That's what I look like in lingerie." And these girls do look just as confident as the likes of Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima, who are VS vets that strutted their stuff for years.

I'm definitely not the only one in fashion who notices this clear juxtaposition. Director of Vogue Runway Nicole Phelps uploaded a row of diverse runway shots on the day of the 2017 VS show, all of which celebrate diversity in body type, age, and clothing taste (i.e., modest dressing). "In honor of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, a reminder, courtesy of Chromat and Becca McCharen-Tran, that the battle for true diversity on the runway is ongoing. #SizeDiversity," she wrote.

Is Time Running Out?

Has Victoria's Secret always been lacking in size diversity? Well, not exactly. Throughout the years, there have been some iconic Angels, such as Naomi Campbell, Heidi Klum, and Tyra Banks, who were more shapely than shockingly thin. But as the years passed and these supermodels hung up their wings - Naomi and Tyra in 2005 and Heidi in 2009 - the media began to embrace an increasingly svelte woman. Victoria's Secret put her on a pedestal by featuring this idealized figure in all its ads and certainly on all its runways. This single-track version of unattainable perfection is what Victoria's Secret continues to publicize today.

That's why sometimes, on days I feel a little more self-conscious than others, walking into a Victoria's Secret can feel daunting. If I do happen to feel sexy, I'll probably march right into the store and see if my gift cards have expired and whether I still have a balance left to use. But it won't be on the same day as the Victoria's Secret runway taping, nor the day the sparkly, mystical extravaganza airs on CBS. Probably not the day after either. That's because, in a way, I feel excluded from that runway - as though that very limited idea of beauty doesn't apply to me. Not one of those girls is 5'1" with athletic thighs and a double A cup. Can you imagine how many other women and girls feel discouraged, too?

A company as big as Victoria's Secret can and should have an answer for the rest of us, and it should start with the spectacle that is the runway show. It didn't happen in LA in 2006, in Miami in 2008, in London in 2014, nor in Paris in 2016. In 2017 it didn't happen in Shanghai, and not in 2018 in New York. The model lineups on those catwalks all looked the same to me. I don't know about my gift cards, but I wonder: what's the expiration date on this same old show where body diversity is never a theme?

The Testaments: Margaret Atwood's Sequel to The Handmaid's Tale Will Arrive in 2019

Just in case reading Margaret Atwood's 1985 dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale - or watching its equally compelling TV adaptation - hadn't devastated you enough, the author is returning with a sequel to Offred's story called The Testaments.

She shared the news via Twitter on Wednesday, giving a few hints about the plot. Apparently the novel will take place "15 years after Offred's final scene and is narrated by three female characters" and is a direct response to the daily horrors people have been living through the last few years.

"Everything you've ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything!" her video message reads. "The other inspiration is the world we've been living in."

Her critically acclaimed original, The Handmaid's Tale, drops us into a dystopian future where the American government has been overthrown and replaced by a totalitarian country called Gilead. Due to a severe drop in the number of births around the country, Gilead enslaves fertile women by forcing them into sexual servitude in order to bear children for the wealthy - aka the "handmaids." The story is narrated by one handmaid in particular, Offred, who vows to survive her deeply unsettling surroundings and escape to Canada.

Hulu's gritty adaptation of the series has raked in plenty of awards, including multiple best actress wins for lead Elisabeth Moss. Atwood's The Testaments hits bookshelves in September 2019, so it will be interesting to see if the new story is incorporated into the TV show at all, since it's already been renewed for a third season and a fourth doesn't seem out of the question.

The Hands-Down Sexiest Shows on TV in 2018

Emily Blunt Gushes About Working With "Inspiration" Meryl Streep in Mary Poppins Returns

We all know that Mary Poppins Returns is going to be just as supercalifragilisticexpialidocious as the original - and not just because Emily Blunt has already wowed everyone as the magical nanny we all know and love. The sequel to the 1964 musical film also serves as a reunion for Blunt and Meryl Streep, two women who are known to bring more than a spoonful of sugar to the screen whenever they work together.

Mary Poppins Returns marks the third time Blunt and Streep have shared the silver screen. Their first film together was the 2006 megahit The Devil Wears Prada, in which Blunt played the assistant at her wits' end to Streep's iconically monstrous boss. The second was in 2014's Into the Woods, which saw Streep as the witch who cursed the womb of Blunt's peasant woman. Now, the two are bringing to life Mary Poppins and her "gravity-challenged" cousin Topsy, who have a less than idyllic relationship. If you're sensing a theme with their roles, you aren't the only one! In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Blunt couldn't help but laugh while looking back on her relationship with Streep.

"It is a bit hilarious that we always play people who are contentious with one another," she said. "From Prada to the Witch and the Baker's Wife and now to cousins who drive each other insane. I did finally ask her, 'When are we gonna play lovers or something?!' She said, 'Dream on.'"

Personally, we would totally be down to see how the two tackle a romantic line (would they go classic rom-com or something dramatic?), but we'll take their adorable real-life friendship instead. It's amazing to think about how far the two have come since their Prada days, when Blunt was a relative newcomer and Streep the well-known megastar. Streep swears Blunt is the same person she was all those years ago, and that's totally a good thing because "she's divine!" Streep revealed that Mary Poppins Returns was written with Blunt in mind, saying the songs were written for her and praising the younger actress's work.

"It's so specific that I don't know who else could have done it the way [Blunt] does it," Streep added. "She's so smart, her wit informs everything she does. Even her tenderness is inflected with her smarts and her sense of humor and her, oh God, she just has a little curl of irony about her. She's just crackerjack smart and beautiful and she has the thing that you can't teach in the drama school, and that's charm. She has it. She's just charm."

I mean, swoon. Which is basically how Blunt reacted to the praise as well. "[Streep] has, from the moment I met her, really been such a pinnacle for me to look up to. And she is a confidante now. She's a friend," Blunt said. "I think that it's been terribly exciting getting to know her. She is somebody who is an inspiration I think to every actor. She's never discovered her whole bag of tricks, and that's all I want to do, is never to discover that."

Honestly, if I had a friend who talked about me the way these two do about each other, I would also jump at every chance to work with them! We totally stan this powerful, supportive friendship and will do so all the way to the theaters when Mary Poppins Returns comes out on Dec. 19.

It's Been 6 Years Since The Hobbit, but Andy Serkis Can Still Do a Scarily Perfect Gollum

If you've ever made a Gollum "My Precious" joke (which we all have so don't even try to deny it), Andy Serkis would like to remind you who did it first. During a visit to The Late Late Show with James Corden, the English actor gave the host and fellow guest Michael Peña a tutorial on how he's portrayed his past characters. A master of motion capture, Serkis taught the two a few techniques that he used while playing his characters, including the lip trick he used for Baloo in his new film Mowgli. Of course Corden couldn't let him go without asking him to pull out what is possibly his most famous performance ever. Watch Serkis show us how it's all done above!

Move Over, Jack Pearson! Milo Ventimiglia Brings Back an Iconic Role For Creed II

Warning: Spoilers for Creed II ahead, so get yourself to a theater before you read on.

Long before we knew him as Pittsburgh Steelers-loving Jack Pearson, Milo Ventimiglia actually had another iconic Pennsylvania role under his belt. He portrayed Sylvester Stallone's onscreen son Robert in the 2006 film Rocky Balboa, and after a decade, fans finally have a chance to see the 41-year-old take up the part again in Creed II.

Audiences last saw Robert Jr. (a role originally brought to life by Stallone's late son Sage) as he supported Rocky in a match against Mason "The Line" Dixon. The father and son maintained a tumultuous relationship throughout the course of the last few movies, and when the first Creed film rolled around, it appeared their bond had deteriorated once more. But come Creed II, Rocky spends a significant chunk of time pondering his life and the importance of family, all to finally visit his son and grandson at the end of the movie.

Before Creed II even hit theaters, Stallone hinted at a possible Ventimiglia return. The two had crossed paths again in 2017 when Ventimiglia asked Stallone to guest star on This Is Us, so his appearance in the film came as a delight to fans of the boxing series and fans of the NBC drama alike. While Stallone recently revealed he's likely done playing Rocky, we wouldn't complain if Robert Jr. carried on the Balboa legacy in any future movies.

Jenna Dewan Shared Her 5-Year-Old's Christmas List, and Damn, Did She Take It Out of My 1995 Journal?

Jenna Dewan just sent off her daughter Everly's holiday wish list to the North Pole, and its contents are the most perfect snapshot of what gifts a typical 5-year-old would want (specifics aside, my list in 1995 was probably comparable). Jenna shared the photo of the list she transcribed for Everly on Instagram, which is full of items relating to fairies, mermaids, unicorns, and puppies (and we already know she loves slime, another 5-year-old plaything tent pole, as well).

"Dear Santa, Here's my Christmas list," the letter starts. The (long) list goes on to include "cozy wings," a "fairy wand that talks to you," a "surprise board game," a "princess vacuum," "Butterfly Princess Barbie," and several other gifts in similar veins. The smart 5-year-old even noted important details to Santa, such as the fact that the Wish Me dog and unicorn she wants are "from the commercial" and the rainbow wings she's requesting should be "big ones."

We hope Everly was nice enough this year to get a few of these gifts from Santa, and we'll be looking out on Instagram for snaps of her after Christmas in her giant rainbow wings, swinging around a talking fairy wand.

I Won't Buy Presents For My Husband's Family, Because That's His Responsibility, Not Mine

Few things make me happier than Christmas shopping. In fact, I shop for the holidays all year round. Call me crazy, but I swear that I get better deals, I'm not battling crowds, and when November arrives, I am practically finished and can just sit back and enjoy the season. I buy for everyone: my husband, kids, parents, siblings, friends' kids, and dog, and I even stockpile for charity. But when it comes to my husband's family, he's on his own.

For years, we would alternate where we spent the holidays: one year with my family, the next with his. But no matter where we spent them, I would handle all of the shopping for both of our families. I took the time to find what I thought were the perfect presents and sent them to those we would be seeing for the holiday and those we wouldn't. I did this, happily, year after year. Then we had children of our own and quickly learned that his family takes an out of sight, out of mind approach to the holidays.

If someone had taken five minutes to make a phone call and wish our children a Merry Christmas, I would have sent a gift. Plus, if my husband wants to buy something for someone in his family, he can do it himself.

We spent our daughter's first Christmas with my husband's family. We were met with surprise by a few family members who didn't realize we were coming and had "forgotten" our daughter's gift at home. They apologized and promised to mail whatever it was they had supposedly forgotten (they didn't). At the time, we were so elated to be celebrating our daughter's first Christmas that it didn't matter who gave her a present. Besides, Santa had been more than generous to our then-8-month-old, and the last thing we needed was more stuff. We didn't sweat it. The following year, we spent Christmas with my family and, as usual, sent gifts to his side. Not a single person acknowledged receiving a gift from us, nor did anyone send anything to our daughter. And that's the year I decided I would no longer shop for or send gifts to my husband's family.

That was also the year we stopped traveling for the holidays because we both agreed it would mean more to have our children wake up on Christmas morning in their own home. After that, I remained steadfast in my decision to not shop for my husband's family. He was on the fence about it, but we ultimately agreed to wait and see if anyone acknowledged our children. If someone sent them a card or a gift, then we would send one in return. Hell, if someone had taken five minutes to make a phone call and wish our children a Merry Christmas, I would have sent a gift. Plus, if my husband wants to buy something for someone in his family, he can do it himself.

After a few weeks of waiting, guilt got the better of him and he went out at the last minute, purchased a stack of gift cards, and gave them to his mother to dole out on Christmas. Once again, no one sent so much as a text to say thank you. And no one acknowledged our children (our daughter had become a big sister since the last time we spent Christmas with my husband's family). Most of them have not even met our other children. I'm not sure what he'll do this year, but I do know I'll have no part in whatever it is.

Christmas isn't about presents. I just happen to love shopping, and I enjoy giving gifts. I don't expect anything in return, and I'm working hard to impart that same attitude to my children. They don't need more gifts, and not receiving anything from relatives they hardly know certainly isn't ruining anyone's holiday. It's knowing my husband and our children aren't even an afterthought for his family that breaks my heart. And it's watching them profess the importance of family all over social media that actually makes my blood boil. But maybe it's all for the best. The past few years have taught my husband some harsh lessons about his family, but they've also taught him that the people who put you first are the ones who matter the most.
