5 Key Budgeting Tips For Millennials Wanting to Buy Their First Home
When it comes to buying a home, it's important that, before you make the long-term commitment, you get your finances in order. Not too long ago, many people thought that millennials would never buy homes because of their need for experiences and not wanting to be locked down. However, according to a recent report by the National Association of Realtors, millennials are "the largest generation of buyers." Millennials simply manage their money differently than other generations, so what will it take to budget correctly in order to be prepared for homeownership? Follow these five key tips if you're itching to have a home of your own.
1. Plug Your Money Leaks
Most people work hard for their money and are interested in seeing where it goes. However, sometimes when you have a small leak, it becomes easy for you to spend money and have no clue where that money went. That's why creating a budget is important, but before you can create the budget, you must make sure that you plug any money leaks. This includes taking Lyfts and Ubers everywhere, eating out often, happy hours and drinking with friends, entertainment, and all the other discretionary items that, if not controlled, can push your budget in the wrong direction. It's imperative that as you're creating your budget, you take a look at those discretionary items and pull back on them. This will help you save the most money that you can and put yourself in a better position to win as a first-time homebuyer.
2. Pay Yourself First
Now that you have plugged your money leaks, it's time to pay yourself first in order to save for your down payment. The truth of the matter is that most people will not pay for their first home in cash, so taking out a mortgage to finance that purchase is necessary. Most banks will require 20 percent as a down payment unless you use a program with a smaller down-payment requirement like Federal Housing Administration loans that only require 3 percent down. In addition to your down payment, you also need money for closing costs as well as a cushion for maintenance and repairs after you close the home. So, paying yourself first will be an important part of the first-time home-buying experience. Make sure that as you're setting money aside, you limit the amount of access you have to your savings. This lessens the temptation to withdraw and use it for something else. My suggestion would be to open a high-yield savings account that's not connected to your main checking account, and you should also not have an ATM card attached to it.
3. Take Control of Your Outstanding Debt
One of the main reasons that many people, including millennials, don't have enough money to save for their first home is that too much money is going out toward debt. Having high debt can also lead to a bank's potentially not approving your mortgage loan because of your debt-to-income ratio. For these reasons, it's important that you take control of your outstanding debt. Establish a plan that will allow you to begin to remove the debt or pay it down to a level that will free up more cash and give you a wider cushion for your mortgage payments. Start by creating the snowball effect, which means organizing your debt from lowest to highest, pay the minimums on all your debt, take whatever is left over from your budget that's allocated to pay debt and pay off the smallest account. The following month do the same thing, pay the minimums on all accounts, then the money you would have spent on the account that's paid off, you snowball to the next lowest account. Eventually you will have one or two accounts and that will give you better control over your outstanding debt.
4. Get Preapproved For a Loan
After following tips 1-3, it's time to get a preapproval so that you know what you can really afford. This is an important part of the first-time home buying process because the preapproval letter will allow you the opportunity to shop for a home, and once you find one, you'll need to look into additional costs like interest, taxes, and insurance to add to your monthly mortgage amount. Then you can determine whether owning a home is a reality or not based on your income and budget.
5. Plan to Buy a Multifamily Home, Duplex, or a Larger Home
Lastly, as a millennial who loves experiences, financial freedom and creating multiple streams of income can support the lifestyle that you desire. As you're planning to purchase your first home, you may consider buying a multifamily home, duplex, or a larger home than you need. While this should be done within your budget, buying one of these types of homes can be a smart move for a millennial because it gives you the opportunity to live in half the house and rent out the other half to help pay the mortgage or to help sustain your lifestyle. The great news is that as you continue to pay down your mortgage, you build equity in your property, and you've already created an environment of being a landlord, which can allow you to keep the property as an investment if you decide to move out later on. I Travel With My Emotional Support Animal, and This Is What I Want You to Know
While I wasn't formally diagnosed with generalized anxiety and chronic depression until the beginning of last year, my doctor and therapist both agreed mental illness is something I have struggled with in waves during the course of my entire life. After suffering a string of panic attacks mostly brought on by cardio, I knew something was off in my system. Together we decided to take a more holistic approach to treatment including prescription medications, wellness coaching, and, yes, a furry companion.
At the time I was living in San Francisco, and with a packed schedule and tiny apartment, it didn't yet make sense for me to get my own dog. Instead I accosted every furball I met and borrowed my friends' four-legged babies for snuggles and walks around the park. One year later, I decided an even bigger change was necessary to find healing, so I up and moved to Hawaii. My sister is in the military, so when she needed someone to take care of her dog while she deployed this year, I stepped in - and got my first emotional support animal.
Those of us with animals are no strangers to their effects on our lives. Pets have been scientifically proven to help us lead healthier lives, according to pet researcher Allen R. McConnell, PhD, in a post on WebMD. From lowering our blood pressure and stress hormone levels to lifting our moods and providing an opportunity to socially connect with others, having a healthy relationship with your companion animal can improve your health and livelihood in a myriad of ways. Though I have grown up with family dogs ever since I was born, my relationship with Chesney, our tiny golden retriever, felt different. Her little underbite never failed to make me chuckle, and snuggles help me sleep better especially when I was in my new and unfamiliar home.
I began to bring Chesney with me around town and found not only does she brighten my day but she brightens the days of those around us as well. More often than not, you'll see those wandering by stop near my coffee shop table or happy hour spot for some puppy therapy of their own. I've even made good new friends this way! Sure, there are some who turn up their noses at the sight of dogs in public places and in airplanes - I've gotten my share of dirty looks and snide comments. I have the choice to either let this get to me or remember how much she does help me stay comfortable in crowded situations. I enjoy speaking with others about her role and seeing faces light up when they interact with her.
The benefits of spending time with Chesney were further revealed after our first month together. February was especially difficult as I was away from family and still making friends in my new home. A string of cloudy days were bringing me down, my medication was changing around, and I lacked routine while I shuffled freelance projects in an attempt to restart my career. I remember one moment when my vision began to cloud. My ears started ringing and chest squeezed. I sat heavily on the couch and fought to catch my breath - I was having another panic attack. Chesney placed her front paws on my knees and licked my face as if to check to see if I was OK, then heaved herself up onto the couch and in my lap when she proceeded to lean her entire body weight on my chest and heart area. I hugged her tight until the wave passed. She finally curled up next to me, laid her head in my lap, and fell asleep. Through her own emotional intuition, she sensed my panic attack, warned me of it, and provided the comfort necessary until I was able to calm down. Since then, she has not only calmed more attacks but prevented their full force.
The ability to bring Chesney with me most places, especially on the airplane, is a blessing - especially because flights from Hawaii to the mainland are longer than my usual quick trips. Approval procedures differ among airlines. I did my research before my flights and ended up needing a form filled out by my mental healthcare provider before I was able to take her on trips with me. Along with getting my documents in order, Chesney and I trained together to ensure her obedience when in crowds. Thankfully she's calm and well-behaved (most of the time!), making it easy to take her out with me.

Laws on service and emotional support animals vary from state to state - and it is important to do your research on the regulations of each area you're in. I Didn't Spend a Dime on My Kitchen, but Now It Feels Like a Totally Different Space
The one room I spend the most time in drives me craziest. It's my kitchen, and in a perfect world, I would love to remodel the whole thing from top to bottom. New counters! New cabinets! A new tile backsplash! A farmhouse sink! But a total kitchen makeover isn't in the budget right now, so I found myself one afternoon looking around and thinking, "What can I do right now, today, without spending any money, to help me feel better about the space I have?" That's when I found a simple hack for refreshing my kitchen that is now a part of my everyday cleaning routine.
So, everyone, stop what you are doing. Go into your kitchen and remove 10 things from the countertop. Do it now, because it's a game changer! I didn't even realize how much useless stuff I had out on my counters; how cluttered and messy and, dare I say, claustrophobic, the kitchen felt, until I removed all of it.
First, I moved the cleaning supplies I had out near the sink to underneath it. Bye-bye, dish soap, cleaning spray, hand lotion, and fish food. (What? Why was that there when the fish are in the kids' rooms?) Then, I did away with a pile of school permission slips and shopping catalogs I'd accumulated over the past several weeks, months, who knows how long.
Then, came the hardest step of my kitchen counter decluttering process: editing down my tchotchkes - a ceramic pineapple, a glass hurricane filled with shells, and several pictures I was displaying. I decided to select just one or two items to leave out and promised the others I'd rotate them in soon. A beloved candy dish was even relocated to the pantry.
Next, I quickly stowed away several dishes that I'd left out to dry. My coffee press got stored away. Keys, vitamins, eye drops were gone as well. It all got organized in cabinets and drawers, out of sight, not thrown out.
Done with that, I took a step back and couldn't believe how clean and fresh the kitchen looked without all of that stuff everywhere. I realized how much usable space I uncovered. My too-small kitchen looked bigger and so much more inviting. Maybe I didn't need to spend thousands of dollars on a kitchen makeover. OK, that may be overstating things.
That week, as I cooked and cleaned and spent my basic human existence in my newly refreshed kitchen, I noticed that I felt calmer and less overwhelmed or intimidated by the space. I'd highly recommend trying this in your kitchen to breathe new life into the room, and so you too can feel happier in the space until you get around to installing that dream tile backsplash and farmhouse sink.

When my family first took me to Walt Disney World in 1994, we instantly knew it would be a place we would try to go to twice a year for vacation. And now, 25 years later, we still all go to the place where magic dwells, adults can act like kids when they see their favorite princess, and snacks are in endless supply. It's the best, and it will never get old.
And as someone who grew up going to Walt Disney World, and eventually venturing out to Disneyland in California, I've picked up on little tips and tricks about the Disney parks that can help save time, money, and stress when getting ready for a vacation with Mickey. I Went to My "Dream School" Even Though It Was Pricey - Should You Do the Same?
I remember the moment I received the email with the subject line that read, "Your Admissions Decision." From the moment I first decided I wanted to go to New York University (NYU) in the eighth grade, when I read Anne Hathaway had attended, I'd been waiting for this moment. Just like that, I became obsessed with one day donning #VioletPride. Every academic decision I made from my freshman year of high school forward was with one goal in mind: NYU.
What did I love about it beside the connection to Hathaway? Well, for one, it was in the (figurative) center of the greatest city on earth. Two, that's where Topanga went at the end of Boy Meets World. Three, Ross from Friends taught paleontology there. Four - alright, you get the gist. I was in love with the idea of the school; I didn't really know anything about the rich history, incredibly accomplished professors, fascinating courses offered . . . you know, anything that actually mattered.
Once I did start to seriously think about applying, I fell even deeper. I spoke to counselors, tutors, and alumni and was told about a unique major called Media, Culture, and Communication that seemed to check off everything on my list. It was flexible enough to leave many doors open after graduation (like many people, I had no clue what I wanted to do), but still felt challenging, important, and interesting. I went on Facebook and saw all of the different groups and clubs they offered from Cheese Club to the Fashion Business Association. The location of the dorms were an absolute dream (living on Fifth Ave, what?!), and the lack of Greek life certainly felt on brand for me. Walking through Washington Square Park during the tour, I felt right at home. Then, reality hit.
NYU is among the most expensive universities in the world, and I wasn't exactly a celebrity child or a celebrity's child. It seemed all of my dreams had come to a crashing halt when I saw the six-figure tuition total. But, to me, there was only ever one option: NYU or bust. My parents explained to me the sacrifice and responsibility of taking out a loan. I said I understood, and still wanted to go forward with accepting the offer of admissions. And, so, they let me. And there began the best three years of my life (shout out to those college credits I earned in high school).
Am I sitting on an insurmountable mountain of debt that will follow me for the better part of my adult life? Probably. Would I trade it for anything in the world? Absolutely not.
Sometimes I think I would have had an amazing experience at any university or college, but I don't really believe that. Going to school in New York City taught me lessons far beyond the classroom. I met the people I now call a second family (which is saying something because I only have one friend from childhood . . . not the best with keeping in touch), and got opportunities my 13-year-old self would squeal at (New York Fashion Week! Studying abroad in Prague!). Am I sitting on an insurmountable mountain of debt that will follow me for the better part of my adult life? Probably. Would I trade it for anything in the world? Absolutely not.
Looking back, I don't think I fully knew what I was doing at 18 years old. (Who lets someone that age make these decisions?) The mature, wise, seasoned woman I am now, faced with the same decision, would probably make the financially conservative choice of going to the in-state university that offered me a scholarship ("Really, Chari, WTF were you thinking?!"), but a part of me is happy I didn't know the value of a dollar. At NYU, my mind was opened to new ideas, perspectives, and people. The conversations my friends and I had while lounging in a dorm or while on the hunt for the best doughnut in the city are memories that don't have a price tag (oh, but NYU will really try to find one).
Going to my dream school was definitely the irrational decision, and I don't think higher education should ever cause such financial distress on anyone, but I am still so grateful my parents trusted me enough to let me make it. It sounds cheesy, but I love telling people where I went to school, proudly wear my NYU alumni merch, and whenever I doubt myself, I think of sitting in the rain at Yankee Stadium during graduation and thinking, "I freaking did it."
Familia, Cafecito, and Rum: Gio Gutierrez Brings a Little Bit of Cuba Wherever He Goes
If you thought Pitbull was Mr. 305, you've never met Giovanny Gutierrez. Gio - what everyone calls him - is probably one of the most knowledgeable people I've met when it comes to Cuban culture, food, and spirits. He is a self-proclaimed spirits geek and ambassador for the Real Havana Club rum, and it shows. Every time he opens his mouth, he shares a little blurb of important information that could literally have the hashtag #PaLaCultura next to it.
He was born and raised in Cuba and is essentially the walking definition of the island: lively, happy, friendly, willing to help anyone who needs him, very fashionable, welcoming, and always ready to get things done. He makes people feel good and comfortable in any situation and never forgets to drop his spirits knowledge while inspiring those around him - all while spreading the love of rum gospel and creating memorable spirited experiences with those who cross his path. He's such a charismatic person, and when I met him, I instantly knew there was something special about him, and I had to share a little bit of his story.
POPSUGAR: You're one of Miami's most notable socialites, a former vegan turned foodie, the founder of a video podcast about food, a Havana Club ambassador, and also a director at an advertising agency. Where do you find the time to do all of this?
Gio Gutierrez: It's something that most people who know me ask on repeat. Most people are convinced that I don't sleep or I'm a robot from the future. To be honest, I've learned to truly balance my love of all things culinary, marketing, and of course, spirits into my life in a unique way that makes me the happiest version of myself. That happiness is what keeps me going, and every day I wake up feeling grateful.
PS: When did you realize you were so passionate about food?
GG: I read Upton Sinclair's The Jungle in high school to learn about socialism and instead learned about the meat industry. When I told my Cuban mother about my new lifestyle choice to go meatless, she pretty much laughed in my face and told me I had to fend for myself. This was in 1995, and there wasn't a single local supermarket with a meatless freezer section. This was the point in my life where I learned to cook and started my passion for food. In the end, I threw all of that out the window, and I now eat everything again.
PS: How did you become a Havana Club ambassador?
GG: In 2013, I was fortunate to launch the Facundo Rum Collection - a superpremium collection in the Bacardi portfolio - here in South Florida, so I was already a part of the Bacardi family. When I heard about Bacardi relaunching the real Havana Club rum in 2016, and given the pride I have for my Cuban heritage, I expressed strong interest to work on the brand from the very beginning.
PS: How do you feel the brand embodies who you are?
GG: Havana Club rum is close to my heart, partly because I'm Cuban myself, but also because I'm American. Not a lot of people understand the brand and its complicated history. It's the story of immigrants and exiles, and a story that is as much about the present as it was about the past. It's also a story that's as complex as the rum itself, and that's why it's so good.
I'm one of over a million Cubans that no longer live on the island, in the massive diaspora of Cubans. Back in 1969, my father was imprisoned by the Cuban government for trying to leave the island. They searched his house, and they found a private diary, where he had written his anti-Castro sentiments thinking no one would ever see. Because of a couple of private sentences written in his diary, he was imprisoned for three years.
In 1963, Ramon Arechabala got a knock on the door from the Cuban government, just like my father did years later. Ramon was also taken to jail, because he had "contraband" in his house. This contraband was basically some bottles of liquor his ambassador friend had given him for a New Year's Eve party, which also happened to be Ramon's birthday. For 10 days, Ramon's family didn't know where he was, or whether he was dead or alive. In prison, they gave Ramon three choices: he could stay in jail, he could join the communist party and cut sugarcane for a living, or he could leave the country as an undesirable. Ultimately, he chose to leave the country with his family and his rum recipe.
My father, my mother, and I also left Cuba in a similar way. My father hid what money he could in the hollowed-out heel of his shoe, and that's all we left with. Both my family and Ramon Arechabala's made it to Spain as refugees and eventually migrated to Miami. We love Cuba with all our hearts. We had to leave her, but Cuba never left me.
PS: What's your favorite cocktail?
GG: This changes depending on the time of day, where I am, and who I'm with. Right now, at home after a long weekend working the "AMPARO" experience, I'm enjoying an El Presidente with Havana Club Añejo Clásico dark rum. It's a classic Cuban cocktail from a time when Americans flocked to our island to escape Prohibition, and glasses were raised to the preceding Cuban President at the time, Gerardo Machado, who allowed Americans into the country to party.
PS: What food would you pair that cocktail with and why?
GG: El Presidente is a really dry cocktail made with dry curacao and dry vermouth, so I would probably pair it with some dark chocolate and maybe even nuts, like pecans. Or better yet, I'd pair it with the Turtle Dulce de Leche Cookie from Ariete in Coconut Grove!
PS: What's the key to making the perfect cocktail?
GG: The key is to balance all the notes - the sweetness from the rum, the citrus, the modifiers, and even down to the garnish. It should be pleasing to the eyes, but also one that can add to the olfactory sensors as well. Also, the perfect cocktail is served and consumed while surrounded by friends, old and new.
PS: How do you bring your heritage to your many jobs?
GG: Whether it's incorporating cafecito into a cocktail or wearing tropical pants covered in toucans, I'm always adding a little of bit of caché, or Cuban flair, to everything I do.
PS: What's the thing you like the most about what you do?
GG: Sharing this wonderful story of a family that feels like my own while sipping an amazing cocktail and seeing people smile.
PS: Who's your biggest inspiration and why?
GG: My father and mother who left Cuba with me at a young age and left everything behind to start a new life. A better life for them and for me.
PS: What has been the best advice you've received?
GG: Today is the youngest you will ever be, and you should live like it. Like Anthony Bourdain once said, "Your body is not a temple, it's an amusement park. Enjoy the ride."

Sabrina Dhowre's glowy wedding makeup can be summed up in one word: gorgeous. The 29-year-old model tied the knot with actor Idris Elba in Morocco on April 26, and she relied on Charlotte Tilbury products to get her stunning glow. While Dhowre and Elba kept much of their wedding under wraps, Tilbury gave beauty fans a peek into the exact products she used on the bride.

Is This $8 Foundation Really as Similar to Fenty’s as Reddit Claims?
The day that I went to renew my driver's license photo was, of course, the day that I couldn't find any of my makeup. I was bare-faced, running around to nearby drugstores in hopes that I could find a foundation before the line at the DMV got too long.
In an effort to shop fast, I started digging through Reddit for reviews of foundations that I could purchase in a pinch. I ran into threads about Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation ($8), a liquid foundation that is said to be similar to Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Foundation ($35) (which is one of my favorites). YouTuber Jacqueline Lovene noted in her 2017 video about the Fenty Beauty's launch that she discovered that the ingredients lists between the two complexion products were very similar, and that both foundations had a "powder smell." I had to see it for myself.
I tracked down a bottle and pulled the dropper applicator from it. I dispensed a tiny amount onto the back of my hand before picking it up with a sponge and blending it into my skin. The liquid was thick and full-coverage, spreading evenly onto my skin to give me a perfected complexion with a matte finish.
The similarities between the two foundations that stood out to me were the scent (as Lovene had pointed out), finish (both were matte), and staying power (neither transfer nor shift once they set). The differences included viscosity (the Catrice foundation seems to be thicker) and how close I could get to my skin tone with each one's shade range (Fenty Beauty has a shade that matches mine perfectly, while the Catrice shade I picked up was a little too warm).
They are similar products, but when one conveniently goes missing - like on the day I'm being photographed for an ID I have to keep for a few years ± at least there will always be a backup.

Ciara Is Feeling "So Proud" of Her Hair Growth After It Was Damaged by Relaxer in Her Youth
Ciara is proud of her hair growth. After sharing a few photos of herself with waist-length pigtails, the singer later took her extensions out to show her natural hair in an intimate video. "I just took my hair down from my two pigtails, and I'm so proud because my hair is growing," she said.
In the caption, Ciara explained she had received a relaxer treatment in her youth, and unfortunately the chemical straightener damaged her hair and caused it to fall out. "I was devastated," she wrote. "I never thought my hair would grow back."
She didn't divulge any details on how she got her hair back to a healthy place, but said she would be sharing her "secrets" at a later time.
