Playing Mo on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Helped Alex Newell "Fall in Love With [Himself] More"

After wowing audiences with his incredible voice on Glee, Alex Newell is returning to musical television once again with NBC's new series Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. The 27-year-old, who identifies as a gender nonconforming gay man, first rose to fame with his role as Wade "Unique" Adams on Glee back in 2012 and has developed quite the résumé ever since, including starring in Broadway's Once on This Island musical and releasing his debut EP Power. Now, after all of his success as an artist, Newell is returning to his TV roots.

The show centers around a woman named Zoey (Jane Levy) who suddenly develops the ability to hear people's inner thoughts through popular songs. Newell plays the title character's genderfluid neighbor and eventual friend Mo. While most of the first season has portrayed Mo as Zoey's witty and fun sidekick, an upcoming episode will show Mo in a whole new light. The episode, which airs on March 1, showcases how Mo struggles with the intersection of his faith and sexuality, which is something that hits close to home for Newell.

"It is my story completely," Newell told POPSUGAR. "Not word for word, but it is quite literally something that I went through at my church." In fact, Newell chatted with the show's writers ahead of time about how to handle the story. "It's a lot of people's stories it all encompasses, but it was really one of those things where [show creator Austin Winsberg] asked me, 'You have such a confidence, where are any of the flaws? And I'm always just like, 'Well, there are many flaws. It's just they're all personal. I know who I am. Why try to hide that?'"

"This is who I am, and you can take it or leave it if you want."

Newell added that the episode's ending scene was especially emotional to act out. "[It was] wonderful to get to the end of that entire episode [with] a cathartic moment of, 'This is who I am, and you can take it or leave it if you want.'" Through this episode and Mo's character, Newell hopes to inspire fans, especially within the LGBTQ+ community, to "start a conversation." "We need to start having conversations about those that are so strong and the confidence that they exude, what's really going on with them," he said. "Especially in our own community. We have so many things already working against us that in our own communities [we need to] lift each other up."

While Newell's personal story has influenced his onscreen story arc, playing Mo has also inspired him in his everyday life. "Playing something that is so reflective of who you are, you know new things about yourself that you really didn't understand," he said. "I find myself noticing the little tics that I do that Mo does. I really see the Southern side of me come out a lot. Mo is a direct carbon copy of my mom and all of my aunts and everyone that I've ever encountered, a lot of female presences. I fall in love with myself more and more as I play Mo."

"I fall in love with myself more and more as I play Mo."

Overall, Newell is just really appreciative of playing a multidimensional character like Mo on TV. "I get to express for those that don't have the voice to express," he said. "I've always done that. Any body of work that I've done on television, I like to do this. I like to be myself on television because there's somebody that is a direct reflection of me out there that needs to have their story told."

I Tried a Trainer's Bosu Ball Core Workout, and My Abs and Arms Are Still in Shock

The Bosu ball is one of those fitness tools that, for me, requires a lot of brainpower. Which way faces up? Do I stand on it? Do I lift it? Is there a scenario where I should be throwing it like a Frisbee? (No, there isn't - I'm disappointed, too.)

So when I found a Bosu ball ab workout posted by one of my go-to Instagram trainers, Cindy Yu (@cindyyufitness), I knew I had to give it a shot. Her exercise ball core workout didn't let me down, so my expectations were high for this one. I knew the moves would challenge my balance, but I still wasn't prepared for the first exercise, a bear pose with your hands on the Bosu ball (flat side up) and one foot in the air. I could barely hold the quadruped position, and I was feeling the move everywhere, not just in my abs, but also my glutes (another important muscle group in your core) and arms. The same thing happened with the next three moves: my abs were shaking hard, but so were my arms and shoulders. I collapsed after two rounds with my abs, glutes, and upper body exhausted.

We've broken down the full workout below, and you can watch Cindy's video above to see how to do each move. We've also provided some modifiers, because I sure as heck needed them. This ab workouts is advanced, so go slow, focus on form, and get ready to feel the shake in your abs!

Bosu Ball Ab Workout

  • Side plank dip (Modification: bend your bottom leg)
  • Elbow blast off plank (Modification: lift one arm at a time

Not Sure What Your Vaginal Scent Means? This Ob-Gyn Breaks It Down in a TikTok Video

Nothing is too embarrassing to ask your OBGYN. When in doubt, ask! #rosa #BeatTheZombieFunk #dayattheoffice #vulva #obgyn #gynecology #clean #hygiene

If you have a vagina, you've probably noticed that your vagina has a unique scent that can change every now and then. It's easy to panic and think something is off or wrong, but more than likely, everything is fine. To help you better understand the various scents your vagina may be producing, Hina J. Cheema, MD, ob-gyn, made a quick explainer TikTok video, and it's rather genius. "It's common to have odor. Every vagina has its own microbiome (bacteria and yeast), which gives it it's natural odor," Dr. Cheema explained in the video.

If your vagina smells earthy, musty, sour, or fermented, you shouldn't worry because these are all normal scents, according to Dr. Cheema. If your vaginal odor is more of a musty and "skunky" combination, Dr. Cheema said this is likely a product of vaginal discharge and groin sweat. If you've had sex, you may notice a tangy odor which is caused by semen; metallic odors can be caused by blood; and "bleachy" scents are likely a result of having intercourse with condoms.

If your vagina smells fishy, you may have a common infection called bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, and if your vagina is producing more of a bread-like odor, it could be due to yeast. For both of these scents, Dr. Cheema recommends consulting an expert, like an ob-gyn, for treatment.

If you're experiencing more of a rotten scent, you may have a tampon that's been inserted for too long or an STI, according to Dr. Cheema. A chemical scent is more than likely the result of urine. If you've noticed either of these scents lately, she recommends seeing a doctor as well.

Hopefully, this quick rundown on vaginal odor eases any concerns you may have, but as always, trust your instinct and consult a doctor if you're worried about your vaginal health.

With This Dietitian's Simple Trick, You Can Lose Weight Without Saying Goodbye to Sugar

If you have your sights set on losing weight, you probably know that your diet has a big part to play. To make a long story short, you'll want to eat more whole foods (fruits and vegetables, healthy whole grains, protein-rich lean meats) and less ultra-processed ones, especially refined carbs and added sugars.

If weight loss is your goal, or if you're just trying to eat healthier in general, we have good news: you don't have to stop eating sugar completely. But it's still worth taking a closer look at the amount and kinds of sugar you're consuming. Let's talk about why.

Does Eating Sugar Make It Hard to Lose Weight?

It's true that eating lots of sugar can make it hard to reach your weight-loss goals, said Anna Kippen, a registered dietitian-nutritionist at Cleveland Clinic Wellness and Preventative Medicine. "Sugar does many harmful things to our bodies, including making us crave more sugar," Anna told POPSUGAR. These cravings occur because excess refined sugar spikes your blood sugar, Anna explained; when it comes back down (aka "the crash"), you'll feel fatigued and want to eat even more sugar.

Higher blood sugar also increases your levels of insulin, Anna added, which is known as a fat storage hormone, instructing fat stores to store fat and then stopping it from being broken down. "We also know that high insulin levels to tend to increase our sugar cravings," Anna said.

She did point out that refined sugars are "very different" than the sugars you find in whole foods like fruit. A sweet apple, for example, has sugar in it, but is also "rich with fiber and nutrients, which keep you full and does not spike your blood sugars like a cookie," Anna explained. If you're trying to lose weight, you want less of the refined, added sugar, not the natural kind.

Can I Eat Sugar and Lose Weight?

Yes, you can still eat added sugar if you're trying to lose weight, but "it's best to limit it overall for your health," Anna said. "Sugar is very inflammatory for the body and increases your risk of many chronic illnesses," such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. She recommended aiming for 20 grams of added sugar or less per day.

How Can I Cut Back on Sugar and Lose Weight?

20 grams of added sugar isn't a lot, but Anna said if you're truly struggling to limit sugar in your diet, the best way to do it is by cutting back or even cutting out sugar completely for a short time. "This often will help you feel more in control going forward," Anna said, adding that, "the decision on whether to cut it back or out is very personal."

If you don't want to give up on sweets altogether, Anna said her favorite strategy is to eat a piece of dark chocolate (72 percent cacao or more) at the time of day when you have the heaviest sugar cravings. One piece won't get in the way of your weight-loss goals, Anna explained, but it will satiate your sweet tooth, help prevent overeating of other sweets, and even give you some antioxidants along the way.

You can also look at what you eat during the rest of the day and make a couple of healthy swaps to cut down on sugar. Here are a few Anna recommended:

  • Ditch sugary cereal. "So many of my patients start their morning with a sugary cereal or pancakes, which spike their blood sugar and leave them craving more sugar all day long," Anna said. Swap sugary breakfast options for low-sugar cereals like these.
  • Swap flavored yogurts for plain. "Flavored yogurts almost always have a large amount of added sugars or artificial sweeteners," Anna explained. Switch to plain yogurt with half a cup of berries instead - just as sweet and even healthier.
  • Swap granola and fruit snacks for nuts, raisins, or peanut butter toast. Trading sugary snacks for whole foods will keep you full for longer and help you avoid sugar cravings.

You can still enjoy added sugars, but it's best to make them just a small part of your diet, both for weight loss and your overall health. Confronting your sugar cravings isn't easy, but if your goal is dropping pounds, improving your health, or just feeling better day-to-day, it's a good place to start.

A Trainer Says These 5 Kettlebell Moves Will Work Your Entire Body - Ouch!

Fitness trends come and go, but there's something to be said about a classic that gets your entire body in shape, like kettlebells. Experts agree, kettlebells are not only great for your core, but are some of the most underrated equipment for strength training. According to Kendall Wood, MS, CSCS, an NASM-certified personal trainer, "kettlebell workouts are among the best for total-body benefits, if you pick the moves that harness as many muscles as possible."

With that in mind, we asked Wood for his best kettlebell moves that'll transform your entire body by forcing you to use muscles in your body that usually get overlooked when similar exercises are done with machines or dumbbells. These exercises are great for beginners (stick to 6- to 8-kilogram kettlebells if that's you) or advanced trainers, and can be included in virtually any other workout you're currently doing. They aren't easy (don't say we didn't warn you), but you'll definitely see results if you use them in your workout.

Sorry, Folks! This Love Is Blind Couple Didn't Work Things Out After the Show

Amid the romantic weddings and the dramatic breakups on the Love Is Blind season finale, one couple seemed remarkably chill about the whole situation: Kelly and Kenny. Although Kelly broke things off with Kenny at the altar, admitting that she loved him but wasn't in love with him, he handled the situation calmly and without too much drama. Given how low-key their breakup was, we can't help but wonder if maybe Kenny and Kelly got back together in the end? We won't know anything for certain until the reunion episode airs on March 5, but just going off a few clues on social media, we're pretty sure that their relationship hasn't restarted. Go All Out With a Hardcore, Full-Body Workout Set to Justin Bieber's "Intentions"

If there's one thing we love more than pop song workout playlists, it's a workout full-on choreographed to a pop song, down to each beat. Because honestly, mountain climbers alone are . . . not fun (to put it lightly), but mountain climbers set to Justin Bieber's newest hit? OK, you have our attention.

Today it's exercise physiologist Amanda Bisk, a certified yoga instructor and former Australian pole vaulter, who's giving us a fiery full-body workout set to "Intentions" by Justin Bieber featuring Quavo. There are plenty of squats, standing crunches, and push-ups to work your muscles, but never fear: you'll also get in some cardio in with jump outs and scissor jumps. Amanda included a full list of exercises in the video description, but just trust us when we say you'll be working everything in this three-and-a-half-minute sweat sesh. Hit play on the video above to check it out, and if you want to sweat even more afterwards, try out Amanda's ab workout set to "Circles" by Post Malone. (And if you're only here for Justin, here's a "Yummy" ab workout we found just for you.)

With One Seriously Stunning Floor Routine, Jade Carey Wins Gymnastics World Cup Gold

Gymnast Jade Carey inched closer to her dream of Olympic qualification on Feb. 24 in Melbourne, Australia. The American gymnast performed a high-flying floor routine that secured gold at a Gymnastics World Cup competition, and it's not hard to see why: each tumbling pass had incredible height and execution, her split leaps showed off major flexibility, and she nailed one stuck landing after another. Jade ended up with a score of 14.366 - more than 0.6 points higher than her closest competitor.

The winning routine not only earned her a World Cup medal, but helps her on her way to the 2020 Summer Olympics. Jade, a two-event specialist, is attempting to qualify for the Olympics through the World Cup individual event route. If she's successful, she'll forfeit her spot at the team event, so she wouldn't be able to win a gold alongside her US teammates. However, she would be able to compete for a medal in the individual events she qualifies in: either floor, vault, or both. (Jade's vault at Worlds was second only to that of Simone Biles, aka the most decorated gymnast in World Championship history.) She has to finish first in her events, based on points racked up throughout the tour, in order to qualify.

It's a little complicated, but the upshot is that with every World Cup win, Jade gets a little closer to stamping her ticket to her first Olympics; she'll know by the end of the World Cup series in March if she's in. Fingers crossed - but if she keeps turning out routines like this one, we have a pretty good feeling! Watch Jade's full gold-medal-winning routine for yourself above.
