This Remarkable Surveillance Footage Proves That Every Adult Absolutely Needs to Have This Skill
Do you know how to do the Heimlich maneuver? Do you know how to perform it on a child?
If you answered "yes" to both of those questions, no need to read any further. If not, then let this video's surveillance footage – of a bus driver doing the Heimlich on a boy who swallowed a penny – serve as a life-saving reminder.
Ginger Maxville, an Oklahoma teacher's assistant, was driving a school bus when the 5-year-old began gasping for air.
"I thought he was teasing me and just not following my instructions and not sitting down," Maxville told KTUL News. But then the boy's sister shouted out that he swallowed a coin.
Maxville's actions that followed were nothing short of amazing: She stopped the bus in a safe spot, calmly grabbed the student, and positioned him properly before performing the Heimlich maneuver. After three pumps, the boy coughed it up.
In the surveillance footage, you can actually hear her coaching him every step of the way: "Did he swallow it? Come here. It is OK. You'll throw it up. OK, got it."
It was the first time in 17 years she has had to use the lifesaving skill she learned during a CPR course: "I got to see if I was really paying attention when I had my training, and it paid off," Maxville said.
Her message to the boy, captured on the footage, made it clear she didn't want to be forced to use this skill anytime in the near future: "Don't you do that again. You scared me to death, you hear me?"
Unsure how to do the Heimlich maneuver? Sign up for a CPR training class or get more information at the National Insitutes of Health.
