1 Mom Is Using Maternity Leave to Travel the World With Her Family, and OMG #Goals
Traveling with a newborn baby may seem like a living nightmare to some, but that's not stopping Karen Edwards from checking a few destinations off her bucket list. The 33-year-old mother of two is currently using her second maternity leave to travel across the globe with her family, and the internet can't get enough of the adventurous foursome.
Karen and her husband, Shaun Bayes, embarked on the yearlong getaway when their baby son, Quinn, was just 9 weeks old, first heading to Spain along with their 3-year-old daughter, Esmé. Since then, the jet-setting family has been to Canada, the US, and a few stops throughout Central America, staying in hotels, camper vans, and beach cabanas in each new location. Karen recently told ABC News how Quinn "doesn't blink an eyelid" about being shuffled from bedroom to bedroom each night and that it's a "character-building" experience.
So what made Karen and Shaun want to willingly tote a 3-year-old and now-4-month-old across the world in what sounds like a rather stressful experience? It turns out, it's actually not quite as stressful as it may seem. "I try to explain to people . . . it's actually easier than being at home because at home you've got so much more things to do in just running a household," Karen told ABC News.
As for the question that's secretly on our minds - how the heck can they afford this? - Karen, a nurse manager in London, is receiving full or partial payment throughout her nine months of maternity leave, she told ABC News. The remaining three months of their voyage will be paid through renting out their house in London. That's a pretty sweet setup, if we do say so ourselves.
Karen and her husband both started their own Instagram accounts, travelmadmum and travelmaddad, respectively, to document their family travels, and they've amassed quite the loyal following. Though not every family may have the means to embark on these types of adventures on maternity leave, there's no denying it's pretty freakin' epic.
Catch a glimpse at a few adorable snapshots from their across-the-globe travels ahead, and you'll undoubtedly be overcome with a sense of wanderlust.
