Cara Delevingne Gets Catcalled in This Controversial Jimmy Choo Campaign
A Jimmy Choo campaign starring Cara Delevingne is drawing attention for the wrong reason. The campaign video, titled Shimmer in the Dark, follows the 25-year-old model on a night out while wearing glittery boots from the brand's Cruise 2018 collection. In what seems to be perhaps too true to life, however, Cara invites unsolicited comments, stares, and even car horns throughout the duration of her walk.
A press release about the campaign didn't acknowledge or recognize the catcalling element. Creative Director Sandra Choi said, "The shoot and film both perfectly capture the sense of anticipation and infectious energy that a night out can bring."
Though the catcalling is not overt or over the top, it was still noticeable enough for viewers to take note - especially given the recent wave of sexual assault allegations against people in power and the viral Me Too campaign that has strengthened as a result. People on Twitter were quick to point this out to the brand.
Perhaps now is not the best moment to run an ad about how cool and sexy catcalling is? https://t.co/8TK9huRHLL

What's interesting is that the video was actually released over a month ago on Nov. 2. It began drawing backlash on Twitter, however, when the brand shared it again in a tweet that has since been deleted. It was then that author Jessica Valenti pointed out the ill-conceived timing. Jimmy Choo has yet to formally address the backlash and, at press time, the campaign is still available online.
