Meet Hamdia Ahmed, the First Muslim Woman to Wear a Hijab in the Miss Maine Pageant

Get to know the name Hamdia Ahmed, because she has officially made history. The aspiring model shared the news on Twitter that she competed in the Miss Maine pageant and became "the first Muslim girl [in the competition] with a Hijab."

"I slayed my hijab," she wrote. For the pageant, the 19-year-old wore a beautiful gold long-sleeved gown with a pink hijab, and for the swimsuit portion, she wore a burkini with a black hijab. According to her Instagram, she was born in Somalia and raised in a refugee camp in Kenya.

"I wanted to try something new, and gain more confidence. I also wanted to inspire other girls who look like me to chase after their dreams," she told World Class Beauty Queens magazine about her reason for participating. "Representation is so important. You can compete in a pageant even if you wear a hijab, burkini, or a long gown."
