"Leotards Are Not the Problem": Aly Raisman Gets Real About Victim-Blaming in Gymnastics
Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman will not tolerate victim-blaming or -shaming. Raisman, an empowering role model through and through, is no stranger to raising her voice on behalf of assault survivors. She, along with more than 150 women, experienced sexual assault by then-USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar. In January, Raisman gave a powerful victim statement during his trial and condemned the institutional failures that allowed the horrific abuse to go unchecked for years.
On March 25, in the wake of Nassar's sentencing, 23-year-old Raisman took to Twitter and used her exemplary voice again after someone questioned whether "gymnasts should continue wearing leotards."
I was recently asked if gymnasts should continue wearing leotards. Leotards r not the problem. The problem is the many pedophiles out there & the adults who enable them. By saying clothing is part of the issue, u are victim shaming/implying survivors should feel it's their fault.

For those of you who do not understand what victim shaming is and why it's so dangerous I urge you to educate yourself. Adults can work together to prevent child sexual abuse. Please #FlipTheSwitch with Darkness to Light https://t.co/cZb5qZkY5U

Raisman's tweets emphasize that survivors should never feel at fault, regardless of what they wear; to point out their choice of clothing implies otherwise. Banning leotards or expecting victims to change is not the answer. Instead, Raisman asked her followers to educate themselves and directed them to #FlipTheSwitch, a campaign she started to help protect children from sexual abuse.
