Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima made her film premiere debut on the red carpet for Pedro Almodóvar's Julieta at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, and her appearance was one we might never forget. And they stayed down there as we took a closer look at her stunning natural makeup, gorgeous sleek ponytail, and beyond-stunning emerald and diamond Chopard earrings.
This marks Adriana's second day at Cannes and comes just hours after she made her relationship with her mysterious (but superhot) boyfriend, Joe, red carpet official at a Chopard party, flashing smiles as they posed for photos. 5 Reasons It's a Small World Is the Absolute WORST Ride in Disneyland
I want to preface this by saying that I truly love Disneyland. Seriously, I'm obsessed with it and think it's perfect . . . except for one thing. I seriously can't stand the It's a Small World ride in the Fantasyland area of the park. Not only does the song make my ears burn, but there's a lot of elements of it that drive me nuts.
Of course, it's a Disneyland classic and I get that. My family insists on riding it every time we visit. But I'm not the only one who feels disdain for this attraction - there are many other visitors who don't like it. Here's why it's the worst ride in the whole park.
Don't Try to Explode a Watermelon at Home
What's more fun than exploding a watermelon? Watching the pulverized watermelon in slow motion. YouTuber CrazyRussianHacker, a blogger who performs mesmerizing experiments, shared a video of blowing up a watermelon, and we are transfixed. No, this is decidedly not the best hack to cut your fruit, but it's certainly fun to watch. While it takes a few tries, he and his partner in crime ultimately pull it off. Unsurprisingly, there is nothing left of the watermelons after the fuse detonates. We don't advise you to try this at home if you're looking for an effective way to skin your watermelon.
I Didn't Work Out on Vacation (and It Was Totally Awesome)
I have a confession to make: I didn't work out on vacation.
I just touched down from an absolutely surreal and exquisite (first) trip to Hawaii with my family - something I've been dreaming of my whole life. Heading into an island vacation, in which I'd be sporting a bikini 95 percent of the time, I definitely prepped myself to look and feel my best, but I absolutely did not work out during my time off.
Bizarre, I know: I'm a fitness editor, I'm obsessed with working out, and I didn't work out on vacation. I feel like I should be ashamed of myself, but I'm totally not.
The resort I stayed at offered an incredible gym that rivaled the one I pay for at home. There were Spin classes for only 10 DOLLARS and daily yoga. A neighboring resort offered spaces in several on-the-beach classes. It all sounded right up my alley (sunrise yoga on the shores of Wailea? OMG!), but still . . . I didn't want to work out.
I guess I had other priorities for my time off. I swapped my soup cleanses for a "juice cleanse" consisting of POG and Liliko'i Passion "juice." I traded the StairMaster at Equinox for a hike through the 'Ohe'o Gulch to the Seven Sacred Pools with my mom. And I chose relaxation and family time over my usual perfectionism and relentless exercise schedule.
Was I active on vacation? Sure. That's just in my nature. In addition to hiking through bamboo forests, I was climbing (essentially parkouring) down lava rocks to see a blowhole, stand-up paddling on the Pacific, snorkeling around a crater, and swimming any chance I got.
The focus was switched to 100 percent self-care and rest, which is something I've been really terrible at. Although I do actually consider exercise to be a form of self-care, when you're go-go-go all the time, working nonstop, and never taking a breather, working out can start to feel like work itself, and you can't really catch a break.
It's OK to give yourself a break - that's the whole point of vacation! Time off is about relaxing, resetting, and not worrying about a schedule. I wasn't stressing about booking a bike, squeezing in a class, hitting an amount of steps, or burning a number of calories. Instead, my biggest choices were, "do I want a Mai Tai or a piña colada at this luau?" and "am I wearing the lavender one-piece or the lime-green bikini today?"
The work I put in ahead of time (before vacation) helped me to feel comfortable and confident in my skin, so I didn't blink twice at the luau buffet or haupia pie or shave ice with ice cream. I ate ALL THE FOOD. I knew it would be balanced out. And we always say it's all about balance, right?
It's still awesome to stay active while you're away from home and your routine, and it's great to keep on track with your personal fitness and/or weight-loss goals. More power to you! That said, cut yourself a little slack, and know that a bit of relaxing and indulging on vacation won't derail you. In fact, you'll be even more energized to jump back into things once you're home.

Nathan Fillion Says Goodbye to Castle With a Figurative Mic Drop
After Castle's series finale, the show's star Nathan Fillion sent off the show in the best possible way. The actor took to Twitter to thank the fans for all of their support over the past eight seasons. This Math Problem Will Make You Question Everything You Ever Knew About Alegbra
Math isn't everyone's best skill - and even those who are good at it are questioning everything after trying this algebra problem.
The question originally went viral in Japan, after a study discovered that only 60 percent of 20-somethings could actually solve it. Are you already feeling frustrated and hopeless at trying to know what the answer is? Watch the video below, posted by YouTube user MindYourDecisions, a popular math puzzle channel. In it, Presh Talwalkar, the mastermind behind this question, will guide you to the right answer.
As you can see, not even a calculator can help you, as it will read the problem wrong and arrive at the answer of 9. To solve it correctly in a calculator, you need to write it out like this: 9-3/(1/3) + 1, which will lead you to 1 as the correct answer. The problem tests your knowledge of PEMDAS, the order of operations formula, which says you must get to the answer by following these steps in this order: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. In this question, that means dividing 3 by the 1/3 first, which is the same as 3x3. That will then lead you to 9-9+1. PEMDAS states you need to do everything left to right, so then 9-9=0 + 1 = 1. Ta-da!
If you arrived at 3, 7, or 9 as your answer, you're not alone. Most people have forgotten how to use PEMDAS or interpret the fraction of 1/3 the wrong way. Still not feeling much of a challenge? Try this other math question that not even parents could solve.

DO NOT Generalize the Hogwarts Houses or You WILL Get Words From This 1 Fan
For many Harry Potter fans, figuring out which Hogwarts house they belong to is sacred. And while some feel they don't belong in a single house, others can get upset by which house they're placed in. Considering some houses get a bad rap, it makes total sense that not everyone would be 100 percent happy with their result. That's why Tumblr user heartbeat-of-a-timelord-holmes wrote an epic rant asking people to stop overgeneralizing Hogwarts houses.
In the Tumblr post, the person breaks down how people don't always meet every single criterion that a house has. More importantly, those characteristics don't apply to every single person. They end their post stating, "We can be sorted but no more than that. You can group us by what we care about the most but the manner in which we love those things is down to each and every person." Read it all below.
Pretty epic, right? This is one Harry Potter fan you shouldn't mess with - they'll probably school you with facts and feelings about it.

Taco Bell's Restaurants Are Becoming Completely Unrecognizable
You're going to want to skip the drive thru. We had to do a double take looking at Taco Bell's just-announced store redesign. In an effort to entice customers to sit down and leisurely enjoy dinner, Taco Bell is overhauling its restaurants by giving them one of four decidedly upscale design makeovers highlighted by open kitchens, community dining tables, and environmentally friendly touches.
The redesign will be embodied by four design models: the Heritage model is a return to the restaurant's original Mission Revival style with materials like tile and heavy timber. The Modern Explorer model will be seen in surburban and rural locales and will include rustic design elements that give a nod to the farms where the food is sourced. The California Sol model features a beachy indoor-outdoor layout that encourages al fresco dining. Finally, the Urban Edge model will embrace street style and eclectic international details.
The renovation will debut at four locations in Orange County, CA, but the chain plans to overhaul all their stores by 2020. Bars and tables in the Orange County restaurants are made with reclaimed wood - and it's completely recycled. Even the walls are getting a colorful mural update. We spy some midcentury lounge chairs that we wouldn't mind in our own homes. Hats off to you, Taco Bell. Next time we're craving, we will definitely rethink staying in the car.
12 Types of New Gadgets That Will Define 2016
Imagine an umbrella letting you know not to forget it. Or an infant car seat that wants to make sure your baby is going to have the safest ride ever. These are just two of the highlights from 2016's Consumer Electronics Show - the exhibition that defines technology trends and showcases gadgets for the year ahead.
Compared to recent years, the show's big themes weren't much different - there was still an emphasis on ideas like the smart home, virtual reality, and fitness gadgets. What was different was a greater push from companies to make these ideas more accessible to the average person with practical gadgets. Other areas of life, like beauty and parenting, broke out more high-tech possibilities than ever before. For instance, this year saw the first-ever Beauty Tech Summit at CES.
Ahead, check out our picks for what we think will define tech in 2016. Don't be surprised if you find yourself a few months from now thinking about buying a smart fridge or high-tech thermometer.

This Video Accurately Describes What It Takes to Capture the Perfect Instagram Photo
Whether we want to admit it or not, we've all done ridiculous things to take the perfect Instagram photo. For some people, it's taking 100 shots of the same selfie photo and then editing it carefully. For others, like Jimmy Tatro, it means making a whole production of it. AwesomenessTV put together a hilarious video of this process - except, for Tatro, it means getting a camera crew and posing his coffee in just the right way. Succulents, shells, cameras, and different props are used to achieve the right feeling for the picture. Watch the video above, and don't feel terrible if you've done something similar - those "likes" are worth it, right?
8 Ways to Survive Living in a Studio Apartment With Your Significant Other
I live in a lovely fifth-floor studio apartment in the picturesque neighborhood of Pacific Heights in San Francisco. As you probably know, San Francisco is the most expensive city in the US for renters, so my decision to rent a studio as an SF resident in her early 20s is nothing new. Oh, but also, my boyfriend lives there, too.
We've been together for about five years, and while the living together part is nothing new, the living in a studio together part is. We sacrificed space (psst, it's 400 square feet) for a prime location, and it was 100 percent worth it. But as you can imagine, I've learned quite a few valuable lessons about how to make the most out of the space - or lack thereof - that we share (translated: how to not kill your significant other if that's something you'd like to avoid). If you're thinking about moving into a studio with your SO to save money, you'll want to keep these eight crucial tips in mind.
1. Get Rid of Every Single Thing You Don't Need
Before you even move in to your new place, grab a bottle of wine, order pizza, and get ready for an entire weekend of decluttering and throwing sh*t out. Everyone knows that when you move, you realize just how many unnecessary belongings you have, and you don't have to be good at math to understand that double the people equals double the amount of stuff. I suggest familiarizing yourself with Marie Kondo's "magic" method of tidying up and getting rid of every single item (from dishes to clothes) that you don't use or want.
2. Pick Out All Furniture Together (and Measure Everything First)
You'll undoubtedly be taking a trip (or 10) to Ikea, and it's truly important to shop together and agree on a style, even for the minor stuff. Living in one room means you can essentially see all your decor at once, so it's important to pick out things that you both love and won't get tired of after a short time. Before shopping, however, measure each part of your space so you know for sure if that six-foot-long couch will fit.
3. Divide the Closet Evenly
Closet space in a studio is so important, and you should set clear boundaries - you get one whole side and your partner gets the other. Keeping your closet as organized as possible, as opposed to having both people's clothes scattered throughout, will save you unwanted stress.
4. Baskets, Baskets, Baskets
They'll be your new best friend. Invest in some decorative baskets that provide both aesthetic and functionality. I have a sturdy shelf in my "living room," aka the section where the dresser, TV, and couch are, and it's filled with baskets containing extra towels, t-shirts, and more. Baskets are the easiest way to create more storage when your closet is totally full.
5. Help Each Other Out With Housework
This seems so obvious, but be up front about the fact that you'll both have to clean on a daily basis. Between laundry, kitchen clutter, and dust, a small space can get dirty really quickly. Tag-team the housework on a regular basis, and you'll avoid having to do time-sucking deep cleanings every week or so.
6. Be OK With Saying Goodbye to All Forms of Privacy
Obviously getting way too comfortable with your partner is something that happens in every long-term relationship, but the mentality is taken to a whole new level when you're in such close quarters. When you sign the lease, you're also signing away all forms of privacy, from having the luxury of your own bathroom to just getting a quiet night to yourself. "Me time" will become more precious than ever, so respect your partner's need for alone time, whether that means leaving for a few hours while they get work done or wearing headphones when you're watching a show while they wind down with a book.
7. Brighten Your Space Up With a Few Choice (Small) Items
While some people might have the luxury of hanging large artwork or houseplants, chances are your studio doesn't allow for that. To keep your shared space feeling bright and inviting, incorporate small but impactful touches, like succulents on your windowsill, flowers on your nighstand, and colorful throw pillows on your couch.
8. Use Every Single Inch of Space
Extra books in kitchen cabinets? Check. Luggage stored invisibly under bed? Check. You've only got so much surface area to work with, so use every single inch of it.
15 Annoying Things People Do on Snapchat
Who doesn't use and love Snapchat these days? It's become the go-to app to capture a quick life moment, with hilarious face swaps of course. With some tricks and tips, it's easily one of the most fun apps to use daily. But, just like when Instagram hopped onto the scene, some people just have zero chill and clue on how to properly use the app. Check out some of the worst types of people you encounter on Snapchat ahead and how they make you feel (mostly annoyed and angry).
If You Still Miss Parenthood, You'll Want to Check Out This New Fall Show
If there's been a hole in your DVR that used to be filled with a weekly hourlong cry fest, then look no further - we've found the new Fall show for you! NBC's new hour-long series This Is Us already looks like a hit (and one that will serve up a healthy dose of relatable realness). Plus, it's got some serious star power behind it, and it's written by Dan Fogelman, who penned Crazy, Stupid Love, so consider us sold.
Who's Starring?
Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Justin Hartley, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz
What It's About
It's an ensemble dramedy about a group of people who all have the exact same birthday and are on the verge of some major life changes as they all turn 36. Ventimiglia and Moore play a married couple about to have triplets, Hartley is an actor, Brown is on a search for his birth father, and Metz is battling an eating addiction. (It's unclear from the trailer how frequently the stories will interconnect, but I'd assume they'll all cross paths eventually).
First Impression
Ventimiglia recently compared his new show to Parenthood during an interview on the Gilmore Guys podcast, and that seems spot on after watching the trailer. There's a dearth of current shows that fit into the same genre as Parenthood, and the trailer shows promise to deliver that same emotional (if a little cheesy) punch.
When Is It On?
The show will air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC. Stay tuned for a premiere date!

Exclusive - Emilia Clarke Feels "Very Strong" About That Fiery Game of Thrones Scene
Emilia Clarke metaphorically set the world on fire on Sunday night when her character walked through fire (completely unscathed) on Game of Thrones. While Daenerys may be immune to flames, her clothing is not, and Clarke appears topless on the episode. In preparation for Clarke's upcoming film, Me Before You, we got to chat with the star on Monday - and how could we not ask about the scene?
"They were like, 'Here's the scene and we're going to get you a body double,' and I was like 'Whoa, what now?' No, no, no, no, I'm gonna do that," Clarke said. "I'm proud." She also assured us that the rumor about her refusing to do nudity is just that: a rumor. "Some mean person said something stupid once," she said. "I felt very strong about it. If you're going to have yourself on camera appearing to be naked, be it my body or someone else's, then it might as well be mine."

Demi Lovato Teased Nick Jonas About His Dating Life on Carpool Karaoke - and We Loved Every Minute
They've been friends for 10 years, they're on tour together, and now Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas can check an appearance on James Corden's Carpool Karaoke off their list.
Naturally, they sang (read: slayed) some of their hits, including "Stone Cold" and "Close," but the true highlight was Demi's hilarious decision to tease Nick about his teenage dating life, which, if you remember, was a purity ring-filled Disney love triangle, starring Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus. Here's how it went down:
James: "Nick, you're dating seemingly everyone. And then who else?"
Demi: "Miley. And then back with Selena."
Nick: "Thank you, Demi."
Demi: "And then back with Miley."
Confused, James asks Demi to walk him through it. "It was Cyrus, Gomez, Cyrus, Gomez, and then I don't know what else happened," she quips. What would a long-term friendship be without a little teasing, right? Press play above to watch the full thing unfold, and then relive their entire friendship.

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Scrambled Eggs
One of the most basic recipes everyone learns is scrambled eggs, but the truth is perfectly scrambled eggs are a lot trickier than they seem. Much like the classic omelet, scrambling eggs is one cooking method on which many chefs differ. To whisk in a bowl or in the pan? To add dairy or to not? Minor tweaks can make huge differences in something so basic, and we guarantee you'll want to change up your scrambled egg routine with tips from these experts - they know a thing or two about recipe developing. Here's how some of our favorite chefs scramble their eggs (we're not kidding when we say Gordon Ramsay's method is a game changer).
Alton Brown: Whisk With Whole Milk
Simple yet effective is the name of the game in Alton Brown's scrambled egg recipe. Adding whole milk isn't his only tip, though. "Odds are you're going to be serving these on a plate. If so, I strongly suggest you park an ovensafe one in a low oven or in hot water while you're cooking. Cold plates suck the heat right out of food," his recipe description reads.
Giada De Laurentiis: Frittata Cupcakes
Giada's preferred method of scrambling eggs involves a mini muffin tin - she likes to make frittata cupcakes. She told POPSUGAR in an interview, "I love making my little cupcakes - frittata cupcakes. I just stick whatever's left in the fridge. Whatever it is that was from the night before, whether it's leftover pasta, leftover meat, leftover vegetables . . . Another favorite is lox, scrambled eggs, and peas - for a little color. For a Sunday morning, it's one of my favorite go-to breakfasts."
Gordon Ramsay: Low and Slow (With a Secret Ingredient)
Gordon Ramsay's scrambled eggs recipe is one everyone must try at least once. The finished product looks more like custard, and thanks to his cooking method and a secret ingredient, they're melt-in-your-mouth good.
Chrissy Teigen: "Cheesy" Eggs, Hold the Cheese
Chrissy Teigen swears by her method of creating "cheesy" eggs without the cheese, thanks to her secret ingredient: heavy cream. Her tip for getting them as creamy as possible with no browned spots? "Don't stop gently stirring and scraping (edges and all) for more than a few seconds!"
The Pioneer Woman: Smoked Salmon and Chives
Like most Pioneer Woman recipes, this one sounds delightful. Calling them the "best scrambled eggs ever", Ree Drummond suggests sprinkling in chopped smoked salmon after the eggs are cooked and then garnishing with chopped fresh chives.
Mario Batali: Topped With Shaved Truffle
Leave it to Mario Batali to bring some serious culinary chops to such a basic recipe. To make scrambled eggs special, Mario suggests adding mascarpone or parmesan cheese, but to make them "spectacular," garnish with shaved truffle.
This Keyboard App From Google Will Change the Way You Use Your iPhone
It's time to meet the next app that's going to change your life and make you wonder how you lived without it. Meet Gboard, a keyboard app from Google that lets you search for GIFs within a text message, swipe to text, and so much more.
The app, available for iOS, integrates into your iPhone as a regular keyboard. To use it, tap the globe icon and switch to the Gboard. The capabilities of what you can do with it are endless. Trying to tell a friend to meet you at a restaurant? Search for it in your text message and send them the address. Or, find the perfect GIF that shows off how you feel and send it away - all without leaving Messages. The best part about this app is the ability to swipe to text - something insanely useful when you only have one hand free.
We had a chance to play around with it and were very impressed. The predictive text function works much better than the one on iOS. For example, if you type in a company name, like Amazon, the keyboard will ask you if you wanted to search for it. Typing in something like "Want to have dinner tonight" will prompt the keyboard to ask if you want to search for restaurants around you. Trust us when we say this is one app that will become as common on iPhones as Instagram and Snapchat are.
Look ahead to see different functions of the keyboard in action and maybe you'll be convinced to make space on your iPhone for it.
Jimmy Fallon and The Lonely Island Singing "I'm on a Boat" With Classroom Instruments Is Almost Better Than the Original

Here's the Full Rundown of How Castle Came to a Close
After eight seasons, the hit crime show Castle came to a close on Monday night. While there were rumors of a big death on the finale due to Stana Katic's plans to leave the show, they secretly filmed two possible endings just in case of a cancellation. If you missed out, here's the full rundown on how Beckett and Castle's epic love story ended in the series finale. Spoilers ahead!
The story starts out like any other on the show, with a murder, a mystery, and Castle and Beckett working together to solve it. However, things take a turn for the worse when the two are duped into a trap and Castle is kidnapped by a man he assumes is his ally. As Castle is on the brink of death, the NYPD swoops in to save the day, but Beckett is already with Mason Wood (aka the bad guy). After Castle climbs through walls to save her (literally), the three end up having a face off.
All seems to end well as the next scene shows Castle and Beckett safely in their home, when out of nowhere Castle gets shot in the kitchen. After Beckett kills the armed man, she collapses beside Castle having been shot herself. As the star-crossed lovers lie on the ground holding each other's hands, the camera pans and their iconic conversation from the end of the pilot episode, when Castle asks Beckett on a date and she declines, plays in the background.
It seems like this may actually be the end of Caskett until the text "7 years later" pops up on the screen. The fast-forward is cheesy and feels a little rushed, but ultimately, they're happy with a bunch of little kids running around their apartment. In the last line of the entire series, another iconic line plays in the background, but this time it's Castle's from season two. "Every writer needs inspiration. And I've found mine. Always."
15 Things You Never Knew About Grey's Anatomy
If you're a Grey's Anatomy fan, there's probably not much you don't know about the show. But as the end of season 12 draws near, we thought we'd put together some of the lesser-known facts about the medical drama. If you do already know some of these trivia bits, then pat yourself on the back, because we dug deep.
- The guts and gore you see on screen are not human but are in fact a mix of cow organs, chicken fat, and red jello. Fun!
- Rob Lowe was offered the role of Dr. Derek Shepherd but turned it down to star in a CBS drama called Dr. Vegas, which was canceled after five episodes.
- Kevin McKidd (aka Dr. Owen Hunt) is Scottish, and hearing his accent will mess you up.
- Miranda Bailey was the only role written with a character description ("tiny with blonde curls"), but when Chandra Wilson auditioned for the role, creator Shonda Rhimes knew she was perfect for it.
- Before embarking on an acting career, Jesse Williams (Dr. Jackson Avery) taught at a high school in Philadelphia for six years.
- The character of Alex Karev was added after the pilot had been shot, so all his scenes were digitally implanted into the episode.
- The names on the OR board are the names of Grey's crew members.
- The first letter of all the original interns' names - Meredith, Alex, George, Izzie, and Cristina - spell out "MAGIC"!
- Before Grey's Anatomy, Rhimes wrote the 2002 movie Crossroads featuring Britney Spears.
- Jessica Capshaw auditioned for two other roles before landing the part of Dr. Arizona Robbins. The first was for Nurse Rose (which went to Lauren Stamile), and the second was for Sadie (which went to Melissa George).
- ABC told Rhimes that she was using the word "vagina" too much in the show, so she wrote in "vajayjay" instead after hearing one of her assistants say it on set.
- Sarah Drew (Dr. April Kepner) went into labor just 13 hours after filming April's birth scene in season 11.
- ABC producers fell in love with Sara Ramirez (Dr. Callie Torres) after seeing her in the Broadway show Spamalot, so much so that they let her pick which show she wanted to be on. Of course, she picked Grey's.
- Taylor Swift is such a fan of the show that she named her cat Meredith after Dr. Meredith Grey.
- Although it's based in Seattle, most of Grey's is shot in Southern California apart from some exterior hospital shots and Meredith's house, which are located in Seattle.
The Major Easter Egg You Might Have Missed on Once Upon a Time's Season 5 Finale
It's no exaggeration that Captain Hook and Emma have been through hell this season on Once Upon a Time. Aside from becoming the Dark Ones, the two literally traveled to the depths of the Underworld to keep their love alive. Thankfully, on the season five finale, there is a little light at the end of the dark tunnel as the show gives a small clue about the couple's fate next season.
After the heroes finally make it back to Storybrooke, Emma strays away from the pack to share a special moment with Hook. Not only does she say she loves him, but the pair also share a passionate kiss in front of - get this - a wedding gown display. Hold up, is Captain Swan getting married? While there wasn't an actual proposal during the scene, the writers are notorious for dropping little Easter eggs every now and then. Honestly, a fairy-tale wedding makes a lot of sense for the lovebirds. Not only are the two a fan-favorite couple, but there have been rumors brewing about a possible engagement for a while now.
Since the show is already confirmed for a sixth season, we will just have to wait and see how their story will unfold. Until then, enjoy the sweet moment on replay below.
Giving Up Dairy Changed My Body in So Many Surprising Ways
In my 20s, I was a french-fry, soy-ice-cream, pasta-and-bread-loving vegan. I ended up gaining 40 pounds and - surprise, surprise - always felt tired, foggy-headed, and on the brink of another cold. After six years, I started eating eggs and dairy, and I felt a little better, but that's probably because I was finally eating healthier, in an attempt to lose all the weight I'd gained.
Fast-forward 12 years to the Summer of 2014. I was sitting on my couch, flipping through Netflix, and stumbled upon the documentary Vegucated. It takes the stance that being vegan is better for the planet and kinder to animals, and after seeing some heartbreaking video footage, I felt compelled to eat more compassionately and ditch dairy on the spot. I had no idea how dramatically my life was about to improve. Here's what I noticed within two months of going dairy-free.
Wait, Are These My Skinny Jeans?
Getting dressed one chilly September morning, I grabbed a pair of my favorite skinny jeans and they slipped right on! Since I tend to gain a little weight in the Summer, I was expecting to have to wrestle with them for a bit, but they didn't feel tight whatsoever. I even slipped them off to check the label to make sure they were the right pair. Yeah, you bet I was smiling and feeling pretty awesome. Since having two kids, I'd been carrying around a few extra pounds that were holding on for dear life (really, my youngest is now 2!), and ditching dairy made it happen in two months without any other change.
Bye-Bye Bloat
Know what the number one reason was for my Costco membership? Lactaid pills. Yep, I popped one every time I ate because even the tiniest drop of butter in a cracker could set me off. I wasn't always lactose intolerant, but it hit me hard when I went away to college, which was one of the reasons I went vegan back then. I couldn't leave my house without some trusty pills in my pocket, and I popped at least five a day. My body was telling me not to eat dairy and here I was devouring it every chance I got. And boy, did I pay the price. My belly was constantly bloated and I had more than my fair share of emergency bathroom runs. It seems obvious to anyone that you should stop eating the one thing that makes you feel horrible, but I guess I didn't realize just how bad I was feeling until I started feeling amazing.
RElated: The Best Dairy-Free Creamy Mac and Cheese You'll Ever Taste
What's That Amazing Smell?
Sinus surgery. That was the recommendation after years of chronic and painful sinus infections, extensive allergy testing, two CT scans, daily nasal sprays and antihistamines, twice-daily dates with my Neti Pot, months of heavy-duty antibiotics, and heartbreakingly having to find a new home for my two cats. The ear, nose, and throat specialist said it was one of the worst cases he'd seen, and said surgery to remove the congestion and widen my sinuses should be the next step. Talk about scared. There had to be another solution.
I'd heard that dairy can contribute to congestion but considered not being able to breathe or smell a fair trade for cheese. It's been two months of being dairy free, and now that Fall is in full swing, I should be miserable with allergy stuffiness and sinus pressure. But I'm not. My doctor can't believe I haven't needed to refill my meds. I even went apple picking and could actually smell the cider donuts cooking (not that I could eat one!). I teared up. I had a moment right there in the apple orchard. And to think, I almost went through with surgery, when all I needed to do was say no to cheese.
Did You Change Moisturizers?
Seriously, someone asked me this, and I was thrilled. My skin has never been clearer. I didn't have a bad acne problem, but a pimple always seemed to be cropping up, which was pretty embarrassing for someone in their late 30s. My skin is smoother, softer, and has more of a natural glow. It makes sense, since cow's milk contains growth hormone, fats, and sugars (yes, organic milk, too), which can aggravate the skin. There's definitely some strong data showing the correlation between dairy and acne, and although it can take up to six months for skin to heal, I noticed a difference within a month.

Smoothies, Salads, and Sweet Potatoes
Like most people, I tried to eat healthy, but when you're in a rush or tired from a long day, you grab the quickest thing. As a vegetarian, cheese was like its own food group to me, and admittedly, cheesy pesto paninis, creamy pasta, and pizza were always on the menu. I had to completely rethink my meals and found that with a little bit of prep, I was eating so much healthier. I made green smoothies for breakfast, salads for lunch, and got really creative with using tempeh, tofu, lentils, beans, whole grains, and all sorts of veggies. Ditching dairy meant that I made room for foods that were much more nutrient-packed, and I no longer felt heavy after meals.
Another Three Miles? Sure!
Eating healthier also meant I had more energy. Whether it was going for a run, bike ride, hike, or teaching a yoga class, I felt so peppy and fired up. I had more days in the past two months where I felt like I could keep going and going than I ever had when I was eating dairy. Maybe this is the reason so many athletes go vegan.
Final Thoughts
I know what you're thinking. "I could never live without __________." So don't. If you want to avoid dairy but you could never give up pizza, then give up dairy except for pizza. I will say that for most of your favorite foods there are some pretty outstanding alternatives. My kitchen is constantly stocked with soy milk, soy yogurt, Earth Balance buttery spread, and my fave - almond milk ice cream. Personally, I wasn't a fan of vegan cheeses so I just leave it off my pizza or sandwiches, or make my own using raw cashews. Please don't mourn for the cookies and pancakes you can't eat. There are so many dairy-free recipes that taste as awesome as ones containing milk and butter. Once you get used to cooking and eating in this new way, it'll feel just as easy as your diet feels now. If you can't go cold turkey, do what you can and gradually take milk out of your diet. If your experience is anything like mine, the benefits will speak for themselves, and you'll be inspired to eliminate dairy completely.

Get Ready to Bare Arms With These Exercises
Plenty of folks gripe about picking up dumbbells, but there's no need to fear free weights. A few pointers: It isn't necessary to overload on heavy weights right away; start with a pair that feels comfortable for your needs and tires you out in about eight to 10 reps. The last thing you want is improper form that can affect your body's mobility, or worse, lead to injury. Before you start pumping, make sure you know how to use dumbbells correctly. Now you're ready to try these simple exercises that will have you feeling like a pro in no time.
Deadlift With Front Row
Work your shoulders and your backside with this double-duty combination move that's easy to follow.
- Stand upright holding your dumbbells in each hand, arms at your sides, with your knees slightly bent.
- Keeping your arms straight and knees slightly bent, slowly hinge forward, bending at your hips (not your waist), lowering the weights as far as possible without rounding your back, which should remain straight.
- Squeeze your glutes to return to standing, keeping your back straight. Once you're standing, pull the weights up the front of your body, bringing them to your chin with elbows going wide. Lower the weights to complete one rep.
- Do 15 reps.
Use five- to 10-pound dumbbells.
Squat, Curl, and Press
Moving from a squat to an overhead press gets the heart rate going while working your butt and legs.
- Stand with your feet directly under your hips, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Sit back into your squat, keeping the weight in your heels, bringing your thighs parallel to the floor without letting your knees go beyond your toes.
- Push through your heels to return to standing while bringing the weights to your shoulders, performing a bicep curl.
- Stabilize your torso and keep your arms moving upward, performing an overhead press with the palms facing out.
- Lower your arms back to your side to complete one rep.
- Do 10 reps to complete a set.
Use eight- to 10-pound dumbbells.
Bent-Over Row
This beginner-friendly move ups the weight and makes for shapely shoulders and a powerful back.
- Lean forward and bend both knees, remembering to keep a flat back.
- Extend your arms so they are straight. Lift the dumbbells straight up to chest level, squeezing your shoulder blades together as you do. Be sure to keep your elbows in and pointed upward. Don't arch your back.
- Slowly lower the weights back to the starting position to complete one rep.
- Do 10 reps to complete a set.
Use 10- to 15-pound dumbbells.
Skull Crusher
Hit the ground to tone up those triceps! Try this simple lying triceps extension, and feel the burn in the backs of your arms.
- Grab a set of dumbbells, and start by lying on your back.
- With one dumbbell in each hand, raise your arms so they are above your chest, making sure your elbows are straight but not locked.
- Slowly lower both arms toward your head, bending your elbows to 90 degrees as the dumbbells reach the mat. Aim to lower your dumbbells so they are on either side of your head, elbows bent and pressing in toward your head.
- Lift arms back up to starting position. This is one rep.
- Do 10 reps to complete a set.
Use five- to eight-pound dumbbells.

The One Thing I Constantly Do as an Organic Gardener
Caterpillars and aphids are two common leaf-eating pests that can munch away at your greens before you have a chance to harvest them, and as an organic gardener, they are the two things I search for and destroy immediately. Luckily, there are a few ways to control them (vegans, close your eyes!). Here's where you start: carefully scan the front and back of your leafy greens as well as the center of the plant stems for any pests.
Caterpillars
An indicator of caterpillars is, of course, giant holes found in the center or exterior part of the leaves. You should also check the center of the plant stem for caterpillar eggs, which sort of look like rehydrated chia seeds. Eggs should be sprayed off using a hose, and as for the caterpillars, I feed them as well as the holey leaves to my chickens (FYI, chickens are natural omnivores). If you don't have access to chickens (as much as I hate to say it), simply stomp on the caterpillars.
Aphids
Aphids usually appear on the back side of leafy greens, but they can sometimes appear on the base of the plant. The eggs aren't gelatinous but rather are hard, black, and practically glued onto the leaves. The aphids themselves look tiny and green. I usually pick of the affected leaves and feed them to my chickens (seriously, chickens love your garden's pests!). Otherwise, simply pick and discard the affected leaves, then rub some crushed oyster shell on the remaining plant leaves and the center of the stem. To aphids, it's like walking across broken glass, and they will avoid those leaves at all cost.
Sorry if this made you squeamish, but controlling pests like these is how you can end up with beautiful, lush leafy greens (like the organic spinach from my garden pictured above). Trust me - it's worth it.
