5 Things to Consider Before Transitioning Your Little One to a Big Bed

This weekend, my family is saying goodbye to the crib for the last time. My youngest is almost 3, and despite his protests about the necessity of a big-boy bed ("I no need new bed, mommy; dis one is perfect," he's told me every day this week), the regularity with which is he now crawling out of that perfect sleeping spot tells me it's time to move on.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the transition is as easy for him as it was for his big sister, who took to her big-girl bed immediately and without incident. However, I've heard many a horror story of kids who've jumped out of their new beds 10, 20, 100 times in the first few nights, and lord knows, I have a little acrobat. The terrifying possibility that soon I might be waking up in the middle of the night only to find a toddler creepily staring at me inches from my face (every parent has been there) is just one of the factors I've considered when deciding when to make this transition.

Here is everything — big and small — you should think about before moving your kid from a crib to a bed.

  1. Are you prepared for some sleepless days and nights? If you're lucky, your tot will take to his new sleeping space right away, but more likely, you're going to have a few days (weeks?) where the transition means a greatly extended nighttime routine, shorter or interrupted naps, and some middle-of-the-night visits. Choose a time when you're prepared and will be home long enough to allow your child to get fully settled in the new sleeping space.
  2. What kind of bed makes sense for your child? Are you in a temporary living situation or in your forever home? If it's the former, you might want to start the transition by converting your crib to a toddler bed instead of investing in an expensive piece of furniture that might not fit in a future space. If you're in a more permanent home, consider buying a bed that will give your child room to grow, i.e. a full or queen, extra long twin, or bunk or trundle beds.
  3. Do you need a side rail? If you're transitioning your child earlier than you'd like because they've crawled out of their crib one too many times, think about finding a bed that will easily accommodate a sturdy side rail. A rail gives a bed (and your kid) boundaries and eliminates your worry about a young toddler rolling out of bed in the middle of the night.
  4. Have you factored in all the bed necessities in your budget? I had my eye on a stylish, but pricey bed for my son, then I realized that I would also have to purchase a mattress, a water/pee-proof mattress cover, pillows, sheets, pillowcases, a duvet, and a duvet cover. Suddenly, the less expensive bed option was looking a lot more attractive.
  5. Does your child often want a parent to sleep with him? If you've won the lottery and birthed two bad sleepers like me, you might want to purchase a bed big enough for both you and your child to sleep in because, hey, there's optimism . . . and then there's reality.

Sophia Bush Opens Up About Her Short-Lived Marriage to Chad Michael Murray

Sophia Bush recently opened up about her previous relationship with Chad Michael Murray in Cosmopolitan's February issue. Even though she doesn't directly refer to her former One Tree Hill costar by name, she does get incredibly honest about their short-lived marriage and how their highly publicized romance affected her outlook on love and finding "the one." "In my 20s, when I was starting out my career as an actor, I wasn't looking for a relationship, but one found me and became serious, even though I hadn't planned to settle down until my 30s," she wrote. "But when the person you're with asks you to marry him, you think: 'This must be happening because it's supposed to.'"

After tying the knot in 2005, the two split just five months later (the reason was never made public), which Sophia discusses in the magazine. "I refuse to let that one relationship define me, which is why I've done my best to avoid discussing it for 10 years," she continued. "The reality is that, yes, it was a massive event in my life. And the trauma of it was amplified by how public it became, which was incredibly foreign and bizarre to a girl who'd been just another college kid 24 months before her life blew up." After moving on from Chad, she admits that she learned to appreciate relationships in a different way. "Some are meant to heal you, some are meant to teach you how to build yourself up, and some are meant to show you how to trust your own intuition . . . Relationships that don't lead to lifetime commitments are not failures. Not every love can last forever. When you take the pressure of The One off, you'll open yourself up to endless possibilities. You'll learn to have a truly deep, knowing relationship with yourself first. Then the rest will fall into place. Reasons, seasons, and lifetimes. They're all valid."

The Reason 1 Dad Decorates Lunch Bags For His Son Is More Amazing Than the Drawings

When Dominick Cabalo noticed that his boy seemed a bit shy, he took a creative approach to help Nicholas make new friends.

Three years ago, the talented California dad started decorating Nicholas's lunches with elaborate illustrations as a way to hopefully spark conversations with classmates. "I noticed he was a bit shy when it came to talking to others," Dominick told The Huffington Post. "So by creating a piece of artwork to 'break the ice,' kids would come up to him and start talking and hopefully a conversation, or better yet, a new friendship, would start."

Luckily for Nicholas, his dad isn't just thoughtful but is also extremely talented. Dominick's drawings of popular characters have continued to impress even now that Nicholas is in middle school. Over the past three years, Dominick estimates that he has illustrated about 400 brown bags while watching his son's confidence flourish "Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but in our house, lunch is probably the most creative," he shared on Imgur.

Since he knows that the bags will quickly be destroyed, Dominick tries to limit himself to spending under an hour a day on his pop culture-inspired creations.

"I drew this one after learning of Carrie Fisher's death a couple weeks ago," he explained. "Occasionally, I'll do original characters or I'll illustrate private jokes between him and me. But mostly, kids like established characters because then he can talk about it with his friends. He's broken out of his shell because of this, and I like to think that I had a hand in helping him do this with these bags."

8 Disturbing Bombshells From Leah Remini's Scientology Documentary Series

Image Source: Getty / Noam Galai

When you think of Scientology, a few people probably come to mind: Tom Cruise, John Travolta, and Leah Remini. While Cruise and Travolta are partly known for their unwavering devotion to the "church," Remini publicly split from Scientology in 2013. After having doubts about things the church was doing and questioning the church's leader, David Miscavige (which is apparently a big no-no), about the unknown whereabouts of his wife, the actress had had enough.

In addition to speaking out about her experiences with interviews and a book, Remini decided to dive even further into uncovering the church's corrupt reality with her A&E documentary series, Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. On the show, she travels around the country with Mike Rinder, Scientology's former senior executive and one of Miscavige's right-hand men, to talk to former church members about the horrors they allegedly endured over the years (the church denies all claims made in the show). See the biggest bombshells below, which include forced abortion and physical abuse.

  1. The church's leader, David Miscavige, reportedly beats his staff. Several former church members have spoken out on the show about the physical abuse they endured at the hands of Miscavige (he's 5'1", by the way). All of the situations they described include the church leader's attitude changing at the drop of a hat and him punching, shoving, and choking them in front of other Scientology staff members. Whenever someone even looked like they were about to fight back, a group of Miscavige's men would swoop in and immediately remove that person from the building. One former church member, Jeff Hawkins, recalled that Miscavige looked at him after physically assaulting him and said, "Do you know why I did that? To remind you who's boss."
  1. Women in the Sea Org are reportedly forced to have abortions if they get pregnant. In the show's fifth episode, Remini sits down with Marc Headley, a former event coordinator and video producer for Scientology, and his wife, Claire, a former Sea Org member. While working in the Sea Org, a now-land-based organization of the church's most dedicated members that control management operations, and living at the church's international headquarters in Hemet, CA, Claire became pregnant with their first child. But since Claire alleges that Scientology thinks women in the Sea Org who get pregnant actively want to leave, she was forced to get an abortion. "If a woman got pregnant, she would instantly be scheduled to go and get an abortion," she said. "If she refused in any manner, she would be segregated, not allowed to speak with her husband, put under security watch, put on heavy manual labor, and interrogated for her crimes." Marc and Claire managed to narrowly escape the church (he says he was run off the road by church members in an SUV; she says she snuck out of Walmart and hopped on a bus), but that will never take away their pain. "I can go, 'Well, now I have three beautiful children who are my life,'" she continued. "But it doesn't make me feel better about not being strong enough to tell them to go f*ck themselves."

  1. Despite escaping the church, some people are reportedly still tracked down and brought back. Claire and Marc also went into detail about the heavy security that Sea Org members are reportedly under when they live at the base in Hemet. In addition to security cameras being everywhere, their outgoing mail is always read before being sent, they are on strict meal schedules, and the fence that surrounds the property has large spikes on both sides, which prevents anyone from entering or leaving. Claire revealed that when her friend tried to escape, she fell in a ditch outside the property and was brought right back in by church members and put on heavy labor duty. She also said she knew one member who fled all the way to South Africa, where he was tracked down and brought back.
  2. Private investigators reportedly hired by Scientology followed Remini during the filming of the show. In the fifth episode of the show, Remini and Rinder are driving when they notice a suspicious-looking car close by. After signaling to the car several times that he can pass, he refuses. When they pull up next to him and ask him who he is, he says he works for TMZ, but suspiciously doesn't have a camera and quickly drives away. When they then pull into their hotel, two men are sitting in the lobby with their phones pointed at Remini's car. The hotel manager asks if they are guests, and they both quickly get up to leave. Rinder confronts them, they act like they don't know anything, and Remini later reveals that one of the men is a private investigator (oh, and the TMZ guy was driving the PI's wife's car).
  1. Church members will spend thousands of dollars trying to reach the highest level of spirituality in Scientology. Scientology was founded by a man named L. Ron Hubbard, who believed that you need to clear yourself of your "reactive mind" in order to advance up "the Bridge of Total Freedom." People do this through auditing sessions, where a Scientology auditor asks the person a series of questions while they hold two metal cans attached to a machine. The machine tells the auditor if the person is telling the truth, and in order to continue to grow spiritually, church members have to pay for expensive courses in order to improve. It also should be noted that Hubbard holds the Guinness World Record for most published works by one author (and they're mostly science fiction) . . .
  2. If you leave the church, you will most likely lose your entire family. If a member of the church speaks out against Scientology or decides to leave, they will be labeled a "suppressive person" (watch Tom Cruise talk about it at the 4:29 mark). If the rest of that person's family is still in the church, they will be pressured to disconnect from that person, which means cutting off all communication and essentially never seeing them again.
  3. David Miscavige reportedly told private investigators to let his father die. David's father, Ron, was the one who got his son involved in Scientology when he was a young boy. But after years in the church and being heavily monitored while living at the base in Hemet, Ron and his wife, Becky, decided to plan their escape. In episode four of the show, Ron told Remini that he knew he needed to get out after he walked by his son one day and decided to say hello. "Ron looked at me and I knew that I had done the wrong thing," he said. "By calling him Dave," Remini clarified, to which he replied, "Yes." After Ron and Becky finally escaped, his son hired private investigators to follow him, one of whom was brought in for questioning by police and revealed everything. According to Ron, the investigator told police that when they saw Ron have what appeared to be a heart attack (he was simply holding his cell phone in place in his chest pocket), they called David to see if they should intervene, but David replied, "If it's my father's time to die, let him die."
  4. Scientologists believe they have the cure for mental illness. In the show's season finale, Leah sat down with Brandon Reisdorf, a former church member who suffers from bipolar disorder. At the time of their interview, Brandon was in psychiatric care but his family agreed to let him tell his story. While Brandon said he's doing much better now that he's in the care of actual doctors, he detailed his horrific time in the church. After one of his mental breakdowns, the church decided to give him an "introspection rundown," or what they think is the cure for mental illness. It involves locking the person in a room until their "episode" passes, which they think means their body is rid of the illness for good. Scientologists are also well-known for hating psychology and thinking you can treat mental illness with vitamins and intense auditing sessions (as seen in this infamous Tom Cruise interview with Matt Lauer).

Kim Kardashian's Terrifying Robbery: A Timeline

This post has been updated with new information.

Kim Kardashian experienced her own (and everyone else's) worst nightmare on Oct. 2 when she was robbed and held at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room while in town for the Paris Fashion Week shows. Thankfully, the reality star survived the incident unscathed, although the details that continue to emerge about what happened to her are each more disturbing than the last. Here is everything that you need to know about the situation thus far:

  1. Kanye West ends his concert early due to a "family emergency." The rapper was in the midst of performing at the Meadows Festival in Queens, NY, on Oct. 2 when he stopped singing and apologized to the audience that he had to cut his set short because of a family emergency, shocking the crowd.
  2. News leaks that the family emergency in question is Kim being robbed in Paris. At around 3 a.m. in Paris, Kim was held hostage and robbed at gunpoint in her luxury apartment at the No Address Hotel - a private mansion where her husband has owned a space since 2011 - where she had been staying all week. Although popular with celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, the residence's only security measures are a receptionist at the door and "a nightman."
  3. Kim's representatives release a statement about the incident. "Kim Kardashian West was held up at gunpoint inside her Paris hotel room this evening by two armed masked men dressed as police officers," her reps told The Hollywood Reporter on Oct. 2. "She is badly shaken but physically unharmed."
  4. The French Interior Ministry speaks out. The security organization said that five men were involved; they wore ski masks and forced the concierge to give them access to Kim's private apartment, where two of the men then entered. After the robbery, the attackers fled on bicycles, and according to Us Weekly, officials believe the robbery was committed by a "highly organized" gang.
  5. The Paris prosecutor's office reveals how much Kim lost in the robbery. On the Today show, it was confirmed that the reality star's wedding ring (though not her engagement ring) and her jewelry box, worth over $10 million, were stolen. Two smartphones were also among the items lost.
  6. A source comes forward to shed chilling details about the nature of the robbery. According to one of E!'s sources, Kim was bound and gagged during the incident, before being handcuffed and threatened with a gun. "She begged for them to let her live and [said] she has babies at home. Then they wrapped her mouth in tape and put her in the bathtub," they said. "She thought they were for sure going to kill her."
  7. Kim leaves Paris aboard her private jet. TMZ reports that an understandably upset Kim left Paris in a hurry after what she called "the worst moment in my life."
  8. Kim lands safely in NYC. Though missing her wedding ring, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star landed safely in NYC on Monday morning, where she was spotted walking into her apartment building in Manhattan with Kanye by her side. Upon landing, she reportedly traveled with a security-heavy entourage of 10 vehicles and 15-20 bodyguards.
  9. A source says Kim has been worried about this for a long time. "This was one of Kim's biggest fears," a source told People, adding that she was hysterical while relaying the details of what happened to Kanye. "She's always known the threats are out there, but for something to happen, it's almost unimaginable. It's going to take her a very long time to feel safe again."
  10. A suspect is called in for questioning, while the apartment Kim was robbed in is investigated by forensic officers. Us Weekly discovered that a photographer had been obsessively following the Kardashians around Paris Fashion Week days earlier and was even able to get inside the restaurant they were dining in by dressing up as a policeman (the same method the thieves later used to gain access to her building). French police also have the residence surrounded and are thoroughly investigating the space for traces to nail the perpetrators with the help of a forensic officer.
  11. Kanye reschedules his tour dates. On Oct. 3, Live Nation released a statement on the singer's behalf, saying, "Due to family concerns, this week's Philadelphia and Detroit dates on the Saint Pablo tour have been rescheduled." The two shows will now take place on Dec. 13 and Dec. 22, respectively, and the tour will officially resume on Oct. 7.
  12. Kim feared she was going to be raped. "The reports of her fear of being raped are real," a source told People. "She really did think she was going to be raped. She had a gun to her head the whole time."
  13. Kim might have been followed while in Paris. Us Weekly reported that the perpetrators might have been tailing Kim all week dressed as a detective and a photographer. The Daily Mail also posted footage of an unidentified man driving a gray Fiat 500 weaving through traffic in an attempt to follow the car Kim was riding in after attending a fitting with Kanye and Kourtney. He reportedly followed them to a restaurant, where he was denied entrance to even after telling people there that he was a police officer, which lines up with allegations saying she was robbed by people dressed as law enforcement.
  14. Paris police search for a mysterious black limo. According to The Hollywood Reporter, police have recovered surveillance footage from a shoe store across the street from where Kim was staying, which shows a black limo with tinted windows circling the area around the time that she was robbed.
  15. Filming for Keeping Up With the Kardashians gets put on hold. On Oct. 6, news broke that the popular E! reality series has been placed "on hold indefinitely". New episodes from the 12th season that have already been filmed will resume on Oct. 23.
  16. The robbers may have chosen Kim as their target because of Kanye. It was revealed on Oct. 7 that after breaking into the apartment building, the men asked the concierge in French, "Where's the rapper's wife?" This could possibly mean that the suspects, who reportedly arrived and left the scene on bicycles, may not have known Kim by name, but rather through Kanye and his fame.
  17. The men knew what they were doing. A source told People that it was "a very well-coordinated robbery" and that they left essentially no DNA evidence.
  18. Kanye resumes his Saint Pablo Tour. On Oct. 7, the rapper returned to the stage in his hometown of Chicago and told the crowd, "It's good to be home." Kim was also spotted arriving back in LA earlier in the day.
  19. Kim's diamond cross necklace is found. After one of Kim's platinum-mounted jewelry pieces was found outside of her Paris hotel on Monday, Us Weekly reported that the robbers deliberately dropped the necklace in an attempt to con the police into thinking they were amateurs. The burglars reportedly set up a "double bluff" escape ruse in which one of the men fell off his bicycle, while another pretended to accidentally drop a piece of jewelry as they fled. Paris police told the publication, "They wanted us to believe that they were amateurs, but all the real clues point to them being extremely sophisticated professionals. There is no way a gang like this would drop stuff and fall off bicycles. All that was done for any cameras that might be in the area. It is far more likely that they played around on bikes for a few minutes after stealing the jewels and when they still had their masks on, before they all got into a van and disappeared."
  20. Kim is a no-show at the Keeping Up With the Kardashians season 12 wrap party. The Kardashian-Jenner family celebrated the end of the show's 12th season with a party on Oct.11, and naturally, the family shared photos from the event on Instagram. Noticeably missing from the pictures was Kim, who's been keeping a low profile since the robbery.
  21. Kim cancels her Las Vegas club appearance. On Oct. 12, E! News revealed that Kim had canceled her annual birthday appearance at Hakkasan nightclub in Las Vegas. A rep for the club told the news outlet, "Given recent circumstances, Kim Kardashian will be unable to make her previously scheduled appearance at Hakkasan Las Vegas Nightclub."
  22. Kim receives an apology from a website that claimed she lied about the robbery. After suing MediaTakeOut.com for saying Kim lied about her Paris incident, the site released an apology, stating, "We can understand how reports questioning if the robbery in fact took place can be hurtful, and so we apologize. No one deserves to go through such a traumatic experience. Kim is not just celebrity, she is a person, a wife and a mother - who in no way deserved what happened to her."
  23. Kim's assistant says the reality TV star is taking some time off. On Oct. 17, Stephanie Sheppard shared a handwritten letter on Kim's website announcing that "Keeks is taking some much needed time off." She continued, "But not to worry we've called upon Kim's closest friends, fam and yours truly to save up some exclusives. Stay tuned for new posts and app takeovers!! Thank you so much for your support for my girl. Love you mean it."
  24. Hotel de Pourtalès's concierge blames lack of security for the robbery. The concierge on duty during Kim's robbery, known only as Abdulrahman, opened up about the whole ordeal during an interview with the Daily Mail. "There was no real security at all," he said. "It's a choice. The hotel doesn't mind about security. We told them years and years before, you have to make a camera, you have to put [in place] a security process, about keys. Nothing was locked, there was no proper security there. Everyone knew it." He also said that even though he emailed his bosses about getting better security in 2010, the security codes had not been changed in six years and there were no functioning security cameras in place. Following the incident, Abdulrahman said that he plans to take legal action against the hotel.
  25. The hotel concierge reveals more horrifying details about Kim's robbery. During an interview with the Daily Mail, Abdulrahman revealed that he was forced to unlock the door to Kim's room with a spare key and he was there with the star when she was robbed. While Kim pleaded with the robbers to spare her life, Abdulrahman said he tried his best to keep her calm. "She began to scream again," he said. "That's why he put the tape on her mouth. A long piece of tape, all the way round her head." He added that the robbers left right away when they saw that Kim's bodyguard was calling her phone.
  26. Kourtney breaks her silence on Kim's terrifying robbery. During a video interview with Australia's Today Extra on Oct. 19, Kourtney opened up about how Kim is doing, revealing, "She's not doing great. I think we're all really still shaken up and I just - you know, I think she has a big, supportive family and I know that all the traumatic things that we've been through, we get through them together as a family, and that's what family's all about."
  27. Security footage of Kim's robbers surfaces. The five alleged robbers were captured on video by street-side cameras obtained by France's M6 news as they made their getaway on bicycles and foot. They are seen approaching the hotel at 2:19 a.m. and leaving 49 minutes later. According to M6 news, Paris police currently have no leads on their identities.
  28. The hotel concierge reveals that the robbers weren't after jewels. During an interview with ET, Abdulrahman reveals that the robbers continued to demand money even after taking Kim's wedding ring. "She believed that they were there for her ring," he explained. "She showed her hand . . . there is no ring, and the guy is like, 'Where is the ring?' At that moment she gave him her ring -- it was on a table close to the floor -- she gave her ring to the guy ... and he put it in his pocket. For him, it was just a ring, I think ... he didn't stop asking for money. They weren't there for jewels at first, they were there for money."
  29. Kim returns to social media and then deletes her posts. On Oct. 31, the reality star shared three posts on Facebook before quickly deleting them all. An Us Weekly insider adds that the posts were actually an error. "She's still figuring out when is the right time for her to come back."
  30. Kim and Kanye fire their longtime bodyguard. Entertainment Tonight reports that the power couple has terminated their relationship with bodyguard Pascal Duvier. Pascal first came in contact with the family when he started working with Kanye in 2012, and a year later he began working with Kim. A source told ET that "Pascal, along with a couple other security members of their team, were recently let go by Kim and Kanye. The ensemble happened to be head-to-toe blue: Kate's power color of choice. She's worn this hue several times in the past from cobalt coats to navy suit sets, though this is the first time she's chosen blue for 2017.

We know Kate Middleton doesn't mind repeating outfits, so it's safe to say the same goes for her color wheel. There's no doubt she'll debut even more ways to rock her power color in the new year. Read on for a closer look at the one color that gives the Duchess of Cambridge her glow year round.

Andrew Garfield Reenacts His Ryan Reynolds Golden Globes Kiss With Stephen Colbert

At the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, Ryan Gosling took the stage to accept his award for best actor for his role in La La Land, and while he gave his emotional acceptance speech, Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield also celebrated by sharing a passionate kiss. Just like ex-girlfriend Emma Stone, Stephen Colbert wanted to know the meaning behind the smooch when the Hacksaw Ridge actor stopped by his show on Tuesday night. "I just wanted Ryan to know that I loved him no matter whether he won or lost," Andrew joked with the late night host. "It doesn't matter. It's how you play the game and you showed up. He gave his all. It doesn't change anything in my heart." Stephen, clearly feeling a little left out, then cajoled Andrew into their own hilarious makeout. Don't worry though, Ryan - you'll always have Conan.

The Korean "Jamsu" Beauty Trend Is the Key to Perfectly Matte Skin

Usually we dip our face in water to cleanse, so we were intrigued by Vogue's report on a new makeup-setting trend in Korea. According to writer Monica Kim, women overseas are obsessed with jamsu, which roughly translates to "submerging." It works similarly to baking, but adds a mind-boggling step of dunking your face in water.

The technique seems counterintuitive: after applying primer, concealer, and foundation to clean, dry skin, you pat handfuls of baby powder (or your preferred loose powder) on top. Once your face has taken on a ghoulish cast, plunge it into a sink filled with cool water for approximately 30 seconds. You'll find that after you dry off, your complexion looks flawless.

Kim noted that after trying this out, her skin not only remained incredibly matte, but even and smudge-free for hours. It even made it easier to apply other makeup on top. She also remarked that if you'd prefer not to go for a mini-dip, you can use a copious amount of facial mist to dampen your powder instead.

Though jamsu sounds a little bizarre, we'd willingly try it! Anything that keeps our makeup smudge-proof is worth testing.

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Cook Bacon

If you believe that bacon is one of the world's greatest treasures, you're going to want to keep reading. While you obviously know how to make bacon (either in a skillet or in the oven), you might not realize how many other cooking methods there are that can make it even more delicious. Allow us to offer you some bacon-making inspiration from some of our favorite celebrity chefs, from brining to glazing and more. You might just find your new go-to breakfast recipe.

Ina Garten: Oven Roasted

Sometimes Ina Garten, Food Network queen, goes for simplicity over complexity, as evidenced by her oven-roasted bacon recipe. That five-star rating doesn't lie, either. If you've got store-bought applewood smoked bacon, you're just a simple technique away from perfectly crispy bacon.

Michael Symon: From Scratch

Chef Michael Symon doesn't mess around when it comes to bacon. His homemade bacon recipe starts with five pounds of skin-on pork belly, which is then coated in a spice rub and refrigerated for up to 10 days. While that seems like a lot of work, it's worth the effort if you love bacon. One commenter wrote, "This recipe rocks! It was well worth the 10 day wait. I followed it to a T and it was delicious. Better than the bacon I get from the butcher." If you've ever wanted to attempt entirely scratch-made bacon, this recipe is a keeper.

Alex Guarnaschelli: Candied

If your idea of good bacon involves sweet, salty, and sticky, you need Alex Guarnaschelli's candied bacon recipe. Thanks to a coating of finely ground black pepper and light brown sugar, the slow-roasted bacon develops a saucy coating that's finger-licking good.

Alton Brown: Brined For 3 Days

With a brine made of sugar, salt, molasses, and apple cider, Alton marinates raw pork belly for three days to achieve his Iron Chef's bacon results. Once the meat is ready, Alton's tip for baking the bacon in the oven is to line the pan with paper towels to soak up the fat and prevent smoking.

Bobby Flay: Maple-Dijon Glazed

Bobby Flay's maple-dijon- and black-pepper-glazed bacon is next level. By combining the flavors of maple syrup, dijon mustard, and smoked bacon, you'll get a sweet-salty-tangy bite that's hard to resist.

My Mom Lives Upstairs: How 3 Generations Came Together Under 1 Roof

If you had told me three years ago that my mother would be living on the second floor of the duplex my husband and I owned, I would have called you crazy. At the very least, I would have served you with a healthy dose of side-eye, which is what I gave my realtor when he tried to show my mom a condo three blocks from our house. The thought of having her within a three-minute walk seemed too close for maintaining a healthy relationship.

That was then.

Now, with a toddler who is swiftly approaching the terrible twos, I am grateful for her proximity and how it has strengthened our relationship.

Shortly after my mom moved into her condo, which was then a satisfactory mile-and-a-half away, I became pregnant with my son. When I went back to work, she was there as our "granny nanny." Leaving my little one for eight hours was a challenge I wasn't quite prepared for, but luckily I knew that my son was in the hands of someone who loved him. I got to watch as my mom blossomed into a grandmother.

That first year wasn't without its hiccups and challenges. Since my husband and I were already using her energy during the day, we were hesitant to ask for any additional babysitting. It became clear that one of the hardest parts of her helping us was the constant back and forth between the two apartments, especially over the Winter. When the couple who rented our spare upstairs apartment decided to move out, our family talked about my mom becoming the new tenant.

Of course, we had our reservations. The last thing I wanted was to feel like I was 15 again.
I had grown used to the freedom of adulthood. If I decided to spend all day in my pajamas or I went out late with my girlfriends, I needed to know that my mom would refrain from judgment. Even though I keep a fairly clean house, she's still cleaner than I am. Sometimes she'll straighten up toys or fold laundry and I have to tell myself that she's doing it to be helpful, not because she thinks I can't maintain my home. I can't be a sensitive teenager with every perceived slight.

For this situation to work, we had to think of it as two homes under one roof, not one big house. Setting boundaries, such as knocking or texting before the other person came over, were imperative. Babysitting requests would be given with as much notice as possible and would be limited to two hours. The biggest rule that we both agreed to is that each person has the right to say "no." If she doesn't want to babysit, she can say no. If we just want a quiet family dinner, we have the right to say no. Neither one of us wants the other to feel obligated to do anything, since obligation can so often lead to resentment.

Through being honest about our fears and coming up with some solutions, we've created a living situation that works for us. One major adjustment we made was that my mom would stop being the primary caretaker during the workday. Taking care of a large and rambunctious toddler became a little too much for her on a regular basis. With the knowledge that she would move in upstairs, I felt comfortable taking time off of work to be with my son. I've become a stay-at-home mom, which has helped alleviate the pressure on my husband, who works from home, and on my mom, who now gets to just be Grandma. With her living upstairs, there are benefits I had never thought of when she had her own place. At least once a day I'll look at my son and ask if he wants to see Grandma, and with breakneck speed he'll run for the door and happy scream until he's climbed the stairs to her place. These short, sometimes just-20-minute visits give us a chance to catch up, while my son gets a change of scenery. We all play with toys, read books, and talk about our day as a family.

Her living so close has allowed us to develop what we call "nanny camming," where she puts him on the video monitor while he's sleeping. These nanny-camming events allow her to stay in the comfort of her apartment while my son is safely monitored from his own room, and for his mommy and daddy to have some time to themselves to take a walk or go on an actual date. Additionally, since she is just a text away, she's also there for those times when I just need a 30-minute break to think, unpack the groceries, or be alone.

This situation works because we each have our own space and that autonomy would be jeopardized were we living in the same apartment.

Although she is closer than I had ever imagined her being, I still don't think either of us would be comfortable living in the same home together. By maintaining space, respecting boundaries, and listening to each other, I can honestly say I've never regretted the decision to have my mom come to live above me.

Having a kid changed my perspective on a lot of things, which was to be expected. I was not prepared to become one of those people who brags about living close to their parents, but here I am: proud that my son gets to say his grandma lives upstairs and for me to acknowledge that my mom and I are closer in more ways than one and closer than ever before.
