What It Means to "Dead-Name" a Transgender Person, and Why You Should Stop
In the first season of Amazon's incredible, visceral series Transparent, we meet Maura, a transgender woman who decides to come out later in her life. Maura has three kids and an ex-wife, all of whom struggle to see this new side of a person they've known for decades. During this time of struggle (and in flashbacks), we also learn what is known as Maura's "dead name" - aka the name she had prior to her transition.
In many small ways, her family shows resistance in accepting Maura's true presentation of self. It may be by using her old name or by recounting pretransition memories. Even the term "Moppa" - an amalgamation of "Momma" and "Poppa" that her kids adopt in the wake of her coming out - refuses to acknowledge that Maura wishes to be seen completely as a woman. The series shows just how crucial selecting her new name really was to Maura's transition process.
Now, in 2017, we're seeing some truly horrifying oppression against the transgender community - everything from President Trump's transgender military ban to a disturbing growing number of murders of transgender people. These are some of the more extreme examples of discrimination and mistreatment transgender people still face today, to be sure. Even so, they represent a marked ignorance about the transgender journey in general that inevitably reinforces the very behavior that breeds it. Even on the most basic level, transgender people are invalidated in ways both great and small every day. Perhaps one of the most common and easiest ways to dishonor someone's identity is to participate in what is known as "dead-naming."
"Dead-naming" is a term that involves "the practice of uttering or publishing the name that a transperson used prior to transition."
According to the Advocate, "dead-naming" is a term that involves "the practice of uttering or publishing the name that a transperson used prior to transition." Most of the time, an individual will pick a new name as soon as they begin to identify as the gender they know they are on the inside. This new name, in a way, marks the "death" of their old identity and the person they once were. With a new name, they signify a new, more truthful, and more fully realized phase of their life.
To get a better understanding of the deep significance of selecting a given name, we spoke to writer Caleb Camacho. "I think selecting a name and hearing people refer to me with that name was pretty solidifying in the transition process," Camacho, who is transgender, told POPSUGAR. "It made me feel like I was being seen as the man I was presenting myself as. When I finally got my legal documentation changed over to reflect my chosen name, it was a major deal. Yes, it's time-consuming and frustrating, but it's so worth it in the end. I no longer get strange looks when I present my ID card or license."
It's clear that choosing a new name to go with a more authentic identity is a very private and personal aspect of an individual's transition. That said, there have been several prominent and public examples of transgender people addressing how they wish to be referred to - both in pronouns and by formal names - especially in the last decade. As we already mentioned, Transparent introduces us to a transgender woman who renames herself Maura after coming out. Since Maura's dead name is Mort, her choice of name signifies a common way for an individual to self-identify after transition: to take their previous name and use a version of it that reflects their new identity.
Some transgender individuals, like Transparent producer Zackary Drucker, opt not to change their names at all. Drucker said in a 2015 interview with Dr. Drew, "[I come from] a family that always told me that I could be whomever I wanted to be, and to be proud of who I was, which is one of the reasons why I chose not to change my name." Still other individuals, like actor Colin Mochrie's daughter, Kinley, pick a new name entirely.

Then there's perhaps the most high-profile transition the public has ever seen: Caitlyn Jenner's. Caitlyn came out on the cover of Vanity Fair in May 2015 and left her old identity behind. She even went so far as to explain the significance behind her choice, which is something she absolutely does not owe the public. With so many striking examples of individuals electing to go by new and powerful names, it's not difficult to understand how it's so intrinsic to their transgender identity. For Camacho, it's an important marker of honor. "For the people I've grown up with or with family members, it feels like they respect who I am when they use my preferred name," he said. "I understand that it may take some time for them to get used to it, but - to me - it's a sign of respect." On the other side of the coin, it should be easy to see how dead-naming can be harmful and even hostile.
Camacho agrees. "In my experience, dead-naming can show a lack of respect for that person's identity," he explained. "For those who have just begun their transition, especially, it can also cause pretty bad dysphoria and self-doubt and anxiety and a whole list of emotions that no one should have to deal with."
"Dead-naming can show a lack of respect for that person's identity."
Jenner's very publicized transition means she is also often dead-named, especially since she was a celebrity prior to her coming out. The common belief is that dead-naming is OK, as long as we're talking about the person in a time before their transition. The reality is, as Sam Riedel states in a crucial HuffPost article about the practice, using a transgender person's dead name at any point is an act of violence. In fact, "hearing or seeing one's old name can induce a visceral sense of terror" and, to echo Camacho's sentiment, "can be a source of profound, dysphoria-inducing anxiety."
Refusing to call someone by their new name is just the same as refusing to acknowledge their new gender identity, and it's often employed as a transphobic way to demean and deny a transgender person's true expression of self. In 2015, radio host Glenn Beck said in a rant that he would not call Caitlyn Jenner by her new name and would not call her a woman. Instead, he repeatedly used her dead name and only referred to her with masculine pronouns. It's easy to see how the two go hand in hand. The embrace of one facet of a person's identity would, logically, beget the embrace of another.
Camacho revealed that dead-naming is not so cut and dried. Oftentimes, especially at the beginning of a person's transition, it can be accidental.
"During the first couple of years of my transition, it didn't really bother me too much, especially with my family. It took a while for my family to fully accept my transition, so I was understanding of the fact that it would take time for them to get used to referring to me by my preferred name. After all, they'd spent 20-something years calling me by my dead name. Now, since I've been transitioning for [more than four] years, I get a bit annoyed if they slip up, and then I remind them that my name is Caleb. It doesn't happen too often anymore, though."
But even when dead-naming isn't intended to be malicious, it is not harmless. As Camacho notes, you can only give those around you the benefit of the doubt for so long. Furthermore, it's important to acknowledge the effect it might have in more grave situations. For instance, consider how the police often fail to use correct names and pronouns when referring to transgender murder victims, impacting the data and understanding of the violence that community faces. And in smaller moments, consider how it might deny a person the simple right and respect to live as the person they truly are. In moments like this, using a proper name and gender identity means everything.
Take 1 Look at This INSANE Photo of the Moon, and You'll See Why It's Going Viral
Every time we get a different view of space, we're simply left in awe of its mesmerizing natural beauty. One photo of the moon in particular is no exception to that, as it has just started sweeping the internet and taking our breath away in the process.
The image features a view of an almost translucent crescent moon through the top of the Earth's atmosphere, and it's absolutely stunning. We've never seen the moon look like this before! This snapshot was captured by an astronaut in the Johnson Space Center's Image & Analysis Laboratory back in 2006, and it recently found its way to Reddit, where space-lovers noted its beauty and quickly made it go viral.
Some users even observed how the photo looks noticeably similar to a specific shot of the Death Star in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Seriously, the resemblance is uncanny . . . was this the movie director's sly way of giving NASA a hat tip? The internet seems to think so!
Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott Get a Head Start on Summer in the Bahamas With Baby Stormi
Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott are having fun in the sun on their first vacation as a little family, and we're totally jealous of their getaway. Fresh off an epic Six Flags Magic Mountain celebration for Travis's birthday, the two were seen this week in the Bahamas with their 3-month-old daughter, Stormi, and a few of their friends. The pair spent their time laying out on a yacht, relaxing, enjoying the time together.
Kylie sported a high-cut red patterned one-piece and white mesh shorts paired with french braids, a very similar hairstyle to one she wore when she was caught out and about with a ring on that finger. Regardless of family vacations or conveniently placed rings, there's one thing we know for sure: these vacation photos are adorable. Keep reading to see more snaps of the pair together and join us as we wonder where in the world the couple will go next!

Why Captain Marvel Is the Key to Undoing Avengers: Infinity War's Devastating Ending
Warning: Serious spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War ahead!
If you're one of the millions of people still devastated after watching Avengers: Infinity War, join the very, very sad club. At the end of the epic Marvel team-up film, we lose exactly half of our favorites characters after Thanos gets his hands on all six Infinity Stones. The Mad Titan is on a mission to destroy half of the universe and succeeds with just a snap of his fingers. Sound like everything has gone to sh*t? Basically. However, there is hope out there thanks to a clever, last-minute move by Nick Fury.
In Infinity War's only postcredits scene, Samuel L. Jackson's character sends a message through a beeper (so '90s, right?) and it shows a red, yellow, and blue logo. This turns out to be Captain Marvel's insignia. The standalone film for the female superhero is already in the works and set to come out just a few weeks before Avengers 4, which means we will soon get a glimpse of how Carol Danvers fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before that happens, though, you should probably get to know her. She just might be the key to saving the Avengers and the rest of the universe.
Her Origin Story
In the comics, Carol Danvers crosses path with the original Captain Marvel, which is a mispronunciation of his real name, Mar-Vell, at an Air Force base. She gets her powers after a machine created by the Kree alien race, which Ronan the Accuser from Guardians of the Galaxy belongs to, explodes. Mar-Vell's powers transfer to Danvers in the process, giving her powerful abilities. At first she goes by Ms. Marvel, but she eventually adopts the moniker of Captain Marvel. For the movie, it is said that Marvel will be diverging from the comic books to keep it more cohesive with the other films.

Her Powers
According to her official Marvel bio, Captain Marvel's current powers include flight, enhanced strength, durability, and the ability to shoot energy bursts from her hands. She is also a highly skilled pilot and trained extensively in hand-to-hand combatant, which checks out since she's a member of the Air Force. In the comics, once Danvers gets Mar-Vell's powers, she's able to "metabolize solar energy and convert it for a variety of uses, including superhuman strength, the projection of photon energy blasts, and flight," according to his official Marvel page. "Mar-Vell also possessed Cosmic Awareness, which could increase his intellect, granting him limited precognitive powers and the ability to ascertain an opponent's weakness. At one point, he also possessed the ability to teleport and cast illusions."
How Can She Defeat Thanos?
With Mar-Vell's powers, Captain Marvel technically could use her Cosmic Awareness to restore reality to a time before Thanos gets control of the universe like Mar-Vell does in the comics. If that happens, the ending of Avengers: Infinity War would essentially be reversed, which could mean the Avengers who die can come back. We know that in the Captain Marvel movie, Jude Law has been cast as Mar-Vell's human alter ego, Doctor Walter Lawson, and that he serves as a mentor-like figure for Carol Danvers. Under his tutelage and with the help of the surviving Avengers, Captain Marvel totally has the potential to fully harness her powers and defeat Thanos. Another possible storyline could be, as in the new 2017 comic series, we see Mar-Vell and Captain Marvel join forces to defeat the evil villain together.

Marvel already announced Brie Larson will be playing Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the upcoming superhero story. The film is set to hit theaters on March 6, 2019, and already has a star-studded cast. Get excited!
Say Goodbye to Your Childhood - Netflix Is Getting Rid of a Ton of Disney Movies
Every month, Netflix goes through its catalog and purges a few titles, but I have to say, next month is going to hit me especially hard. In May, the streaming service is getting rid of a ton of my favorite Disney Channel original movies. The Cheetah Girls franchise? Gone. The Camp Rock movies? No more. Even underrated hits like Jump In! and Read It and Weep are being scrubbed from Netflix. The only solace I have is that High School Musical 3 - arguably the best HSM movie - will be available soon. Get ready to say goodbye to your childhood as these Disney movies (and many more classics) disappear from your queue forever.

How Does Nick Fury Know Captain Marvel, Anyway? Here's Their Whole Backstory
Warning: spoilers for do-we-even-have-to-say-it-at-this-point below.
By now, you've hopefully seen Avengers: Infinity War. Blah blah blah, a lot of people die, blah blah, not everyone, though, blah, Infinity Stones, blah. We're going to go ahead and skip all of the film's devastating and emotionally destructive events and focus on something much more proactive: how it's all going to get fixed. If you stayed for the postcredits scene, you'll know that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has sent out a distress signal bearing a rather strange symbol. Turns out it's the insignia for a supercharged newcomer: Captain Marvel.
If you don't know, Captain Marvel is a hero who pops up in the '90s, but until now she has not appeared in the Marvel cinematic universe. We're going to meet the hero in next year's Captain Marvel, which will drop shortly before the fourth Avengers film. But Captain Marvel isn't just a completely random person who bursts onto the scene, and Nick Fury doesn't just call her out of the blue. Naturally, the two have a history that will be explored in the upcoming film.
Granted, Captain Marvel may stray from the comic book origin story, but we have a feeling some of it will stay firmly in place. According to the official bio page for Carol Danvers, our young hero begins in the Air Force and eventually gets hired into the CIA because of her promising start. And what do you know? The first official picture of Captain Marvel shows star Brie Larson standing in an airplane while wearing a flight suit. According to the comics, Carol meets Colonel Nick Fury as soon as she transitions from the Air Force to the CIA, and the rest is history.
As for why Nick Fury decides to call his old friend after half the universe is vaporized? Basically, Captain Marvel's powers are key to destroying Thanos in the comics. To clarify, the most important power, Cosmic Awareness, belongs to the original Captain Marvel, aka Mar-Vell. Luckily, this iteration of the character will also appear in Captain Marvel, meaning the film version will either bestow Carol Danvers with some of those great intergalactic abilities or the duo will arrive on the scene to kick Thanos's ass together.
Either way, Nick Fury's phone call is basically the crux of the entire universe at this point. It establishes his relationship with Carol Danvers, which we will go back to the '90s and witness in Captain Marvel. It also opens the gate to Thanos's weak spot and gives us hope that not all of our favorite heroes are gone for good.
The Cast of Avengers: Infinity War Gets Burned in the Latest "Mean Tweets" Video
The cast of Avengers: Infinity War stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to draw their own characters and reveal their most embarrassing secrets, but that wasn't enough for the late night host. Kimmel also made sure they participated in the latest edition of "Mean Tweets." In the video above, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Pratt, Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Mackie, Scarlett Johansson, and more get in the hot seat while reading hilariously rude tweets about themselves. According to people on Twitter, Jackson resembles a snapping turtle, Holland claps when a plane lands, and Boseman has a "whitebread-ass" name. Needless to say, their reactions are seriously priceless.
Busy Philipps Is Getting a Late-Night Talk Show: "The Good News Is I Love to Talk"
Busy Philipps is joining the ranks of other female late-night hosts. According to The Cut, the 38-year-old actress has landed a late-night talk show on E!, which will begin filming in Los Angeles this Summer. The working title is reportedly - wait for it - Busy Tonight.
Philipps confirmed the news on Instagram before recording a few elated Stories. "Guys, do you know that saying that the only things worth doing are the things that scare you the most?" she said. "Ignore the bags under my eyes; I'll get them fixed when I'm a big talk show host. Anyways, I'm super excited about this. I can't even. It's gonna be dope! Let's just have a late-night talk show, guys. Let's just hang out and talk about stuff. The good news is I love to talk."
After getting her start on Freaks and Geeks, Philipps has also appeared in Dawson's Creek, Cougar Town, and the newly released I Feel Pretty. Her costar in the Amy Schumer comedy, Michelle Williams, also happens to be one of her closest friends. The two first met on the set of Dawson's Creek and frequently attend award shows together. So, we think it's safe to assume that Williams will be a guest at one point or another!
Kanye West Reveals That Taylor Swift "Famous" Moment Contributed to His 2016 Breakdown
This week, Kanye West released a new expository interview with Charlamagne tha God. The chat comes hot on the heels of some rather interesting recent developments; last week, Kanye returned to Twitter with philosophical thoughts and musings, as well as some rather alarming political declarations. He then dropped one single called "Lift Yourself" and another called "Ye vs. the People" in rather short succession. And while we're still not entirely sure what the future days and weeks will hold, the new interview has a different goal: to clear up the past.
In the first few minutes of the interview, Kanye gives an update on his mental health. Charlamagne asks the rapper specifically about his breakdown in late 2016, which led to a hospitalization at UCLA Medical Center. He was released a week later and entered counseling with wife Kim Kardashian the following month. But what, exactly, happened to trigger this mental break?
"Ever since the Taylor Swift moment, it's never been the same."
As it turns out, it was the amalgamation of a lot of different components. Kanye says his rigorous tour schedule, performing four nights a week, was really weighing him down. He also mentions Kim's terrifying robbery in Paris, noting that it felt like many things were beyond his grasp. "Fear. Stress. Control. Being controlled. Manipulation. Like being a pawn in the chess piece of life," Kanye said. He also talks about that Taylor Swift moment: when he mentioned her in his song "Famous" and the fallout that ensued thereafter. "Ever since the Taylor Swift moment, it's never been the same, the connection with radio. It's like, whatever powers that be, it was much harder after that . . . the radio element was just one of the factors."
To be clear, it doesn't seem like Kanye is blaming Taylor Swift, not even in part, for his breakdown. But it sounds like the ripple effect of that whole situation did some kind of irrevocable damage, and that damage was a contributing factor when it comes to Kanye's breakdown. Does this mean we're going to get another chapter in the whole Kanye and Taylor saga when his new album comes out? Seems like only time will tell.
Adam Rippon Struts His Stuff to RuPaul During a Fierce Dancing With the Stars Performance
Adam Rippon is in it to win it, ladies and gentlemen. During the premiere of Dancing With the Stars: Athletes, the Olympic figure skater wowed with an incredible performance of RuPaul's "Sissy That Walk" alongside his partner, Jenna Johnson. Aside from strutting his stuff on the ballroom floor, the 28-year-old absolutely slayed his intricate choreography. Even his best friend, figure skater Mirai Nagasu (who is also competing on the show, FYI), was blown away. See the incredible performance above.
Set Your Alarms: Happy Death Day's Sequel Is OFFICIALLY a Go
Last year, the horror genre found a surprising delight in Happy Death Day, a movie about a sorority girl who relives the day of her murder over and over again. If you found yourself jonesing for more and wishing for a sequel, we have amazing news: Happy Death Day 2 is officially in the works, and production begins on May 10. That is very soon. Christopher B. Landon will return to the director's chair to helm the second part of this intriguing story, and stars Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard are both on board as well.
In case you forgot, Happy Death Day leaves the door wide open for a follow-up feature. Yes, Tree Gelbman (Roethe) does manage to eventually make it through her birthday without dying, but we never really get an answer as to why she's stuck in a time loop in the first place. Landon revealed back in October that the solution is "hiding in plain sight."
"The answer to why she's literally stuck in a time loop - it's something I have the answer to. It's in my back pocket because, knock on wood, you never know how things are going to go, and we're not counting our chickens, but if I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to make a sequel, the answer to that question is the premise of my sequel."
That's why we're so excited to see Happy Death Day 2 come to life. This isn't the classic, tired horror movie story, where a film unexpectedly makes a bunch of money and the studio ekes out a half-assed and contrived story to make even more money. This time, we really want to get some closure. That's all the information we have at the moment, but with production starting so soon, there's a good chance the film will be out by 2019.
Elsa Pataky on Her 7-Year Marriage to Chris Hemsworth: "I Don't Know How We Survived"
Elsa Pataky knows a thing or two about how to make a marriage work. The Spanish actress recently spoke to Vogue Australias and opened up about her seven-year romance with Chris Hemsworth and how they "make it work."
"We did everything very quickly – I don't know how we survived as a couple," Elsa said. "We were married and then a year after we had kids. It puts a lot of pressure on a marriage, but we came out good because there is a lot of love between us and we are very strong personalities but love each other so much. We make it work." She went on: "I think our years together have been great. Every marriage has ups and downs – it's constant work to be in a successful marriage and stay together forever. Chris's parents have been together all their lives, and that's such a beautiful thing."
This isn't the first time Elsa has opened up about marriage obstacles. Back in January, the 12 Strong actress sat down with Elle Australia and opened up about her seven-year romance with Chris Hemsworth. The candid interview touched upon everything from how the couple made their relationship work on the brink of Chris's box office success to how she felt conflicted between motherhood and her career after becoming a mom.
"It's interesting how you can be a successful woman who has been working her whole life, and then you have kids, and suddenly your career isn't as important, and you don't appreciate it as much, and you just think, 'What am I doing? I have been fighting all my life for this, and now I don't know if I really want it?'" Elsa shared.
"It's unfair in a way because I don't think men go through that. But when you become a mum, everything that was important goes into second position. You change a lot. You mature, you see life differently and learn so many things."
As far as how the two managed to maintain a strong front throughout the years, Elsa got refreshingly honest and admitted they didn't. "I think any time you start a family without knowing each other that much, it can be complicated," she said. "He was very young to be starting a family, and at the same time he was juggling that with his career and it was sometimes difficult, there was so much going on."
The 34-year-old hunk, however, did keep his priorities in check. "He was always trying to be the best dad and has never failed to make me feel like his family is the most important thing to him and [going through that] is how we've become so strong together," Elsa recalled.
Just last year, the Thor star also admitted that his career put a strain on his marriage. "My wife and I fell in love, had kids, didn't really see each other for a few years, then fell back in love," he told GQ magazine in October. "In terms of work, she's certainly given up more than I have. She'd like me to step back and be at home with the kids more, and of course, I want that too. But I feel like I'm at this crucial point in my career - I've just got to set up for longevity or I'll slip off."
Turns Out Mark Ruffalo Spoiled the Avengers: Infinity War Ending WAY Before It Came Out
Uh oh, @DonCheadle, is @MarkRuffalo going to get in trouble with @MarvelStudios now!? #InfinityWar #D23expo pic.twitter.com/WR5C1QCBTb
- Good Morning America (@GMA) July 16, 2017
Warning: this post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.
When part of the Avengers: Infinity War cast stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live recently, they were very quick to point out that of all of them, Mark Ruffalo is the least trustworthy when it comes to keeping movie secrets. The actor did accidentally stream the first 20 minutes of Thor: Ragnarok on Instagram, after all. On top of that, it turns out that while promoting the film at Disney's D23 expo last Summer, Ruffalo actually spoiled the ending of Avengers: Infinity War. Seriously!
In the video above, he and costar Don Cheadle are talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a reporter when Ruffalo slips up. At first listen, it sounds like he says, "Wait until you see this next one, everybody dies." But if you listen closely, Ruffalo actually starts to say "half of everyone dies" before he stops himself. Almost immediately, Cheadle shoots him a "you messed up" look and just shakes his head in resignation.
"Can we rewind that part?" Ruffalo jokes. "Am I in trouble?" Don Cheadle tries his best to tell Ruffalo to move on to the next question after letting him know he's probably in "a little" trouble. Turns out the man behind the Hulk was right, because if you've seen Avengers: Infinity War, you know that half of our beloved heroes bite the dust. At least we have this adorable video to console us while we wait for Avengers 4!
Westworld's Violent Delights Will Continue in Season 3
Westworld's second season has only just started, but we can already report some good news about season three. While sadly we don't know what, exactly, "Glory" is, we can tell you that HBO has officially renewed the critically acclaimed sci-fi drama for a third season, which makes sense since it's the network's most-watched freshman series ever. Looks like Dolores, Teddy, Maeve, and Bernard's violent delights will continue on for a while! Assuming they make it out of this season alive, that is.
Casey Bloys, president of HBO Programming, shared the good news in a statement on Tuesday that celebrated the creative forces behind the show. "It's been an extraordinary pleasure to work with the exceptionally talented Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as their gifted cast and crew," he said. "From the inspired storytelling to the incredible visuals, we are so excited to see where the next chapter will take us."
The 10-episode second season kicked off on April 22, and so far the dark odyssey about the nature of what it means to be human has lived up to season one. Sure, there are some confusing timeline issues, and yes, we're still freaking out about that maybe-death at the end of the premiere, but overall Westworld is just as intriguing (and feminist) as ever. Now if we could just figure out what that wolf means . . .
Evangeline Lilly Steals the Show in the New, Kickass Trailer For Ant-Man and the Wasp
A new trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp is here! The action-packed sequel to the 2015 original finds Hope (Evangeline Lilly) and her father, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), on the run from the government thanks to some shenanigans Scott/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) got up to ("I do some dumb things, and the people I love the most pay the price," Scott intones in a voice-over in the first trailer Marvel shared, below). Fortunately Hope, who is now a superhero in her own right thanks to her high-tech Wasp suit, can handle it. While there's no sign of new cast member Michelle Pfeiffer, we do get a funny scene with Laurence Fishburne's Dr. Bill Foster (aka Goliath) at the end of the new footage, as well as a giant ant playing the drums (yes, really). Watch the trailer above before it explodes into theaters on July 6.
Trailer 1:
Princess Eugenie and Her Fiancé Move In Next Door to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Princess Eugenie and her fiancé, Jack Brooksbank, have moved in next door to another soon-to-be-wed couple: her cousin Harry and his love, Meghan Markle. The 28-year-old royal and her wine merchant beau now reside in Ivy Cottage at Kensington Palace, a three-bedroom home right beside Nottingham Cottage, where Harry and Meghan live. It is also quite close to Prince William and Kate Middleton's Apartment 1A, where they live with their three children. Before moving in with Jack, Eugenie lived with her older sister, Princess Beatrice, at St. James Palace.
Eugenie and Jack got engaged in January and are set to walk down the aisle in October at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Before that, we'll likely see them dressed to the nines at the same location for Harry and Meghan's wedding, which is in just a few weeks! An Arrested Development Season 4 Special Is Coming to Netflix on "Cinco de Cuatro"
Source: Everett Collection
Season five of Arrested Development is premiering soon (!), but before you settle in to watch the whole thing on Netflix, there's something else you'll want to watch first. Mitch Hurwitz, the show's creator, revealed that he made an entire recut of season four called Arrested Development Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences, which will be released on Netflix on Friday, May 4 - otherwise known as "Cinco de Cuatro" in the Bluth universe. If you weren't a fan of season four's Rashomon style and jigsaw-puzzle feel, this is your chance to experience the plot points in a whole new way.
Hurwitz explained that he "shuffled the content from 15 individualized stories into 22 interwoven stories the length of the original series," and he assured fans that it's "funny in a whole new way." He also shared that season five will be available sooner than you might have thought - "like, real soon" - so we're officially calling off any plans we had in the next few weeks. Read Hurwitz's entire statement below, and get ready to have a fun, sexy time.

Here's the Steak Recipe That Launched Ree Drummond's Cooking Career
Ree Drummond of The Pioneer Woman has become a superstar over the last decade, but how did she get her start? Long before her Food Network show, lifestyle magazine, Walmart kitchen collection, Mercantile shop and restaurant, and her cookbooks, Ree began blogging about her family's life on the ranch in 2006 sharing "gross-out stories" and "frontier follies" - not recipes. It wasn't until a year later that Ree shared her first cooking how-to. I reached out to The Pioneer Woman herself to get the scoop on how she became a food blogger and whether there was one viral post that led to her huge popularity. She told us:
"I can confirm that 'How to Cook a Steak' was my first cooking post ever. However, it didn't really go viral - it just slowly brought in more readers over time! I started blogging in 2006 and started doing recipes in 2007 . . . [O]ver time, people came to read, shared with people they knew, etc! They enjoyed the step-by-step format, then started asking me to post more, and that's how my food blog began. My food photos left a lot to be desired in those days! I never really had that 'huge moment' where something catapulted my blog into outer space - it was slow and steady!"
Ree's unique steak-cooking method calls for seasoning a ribeye with Lawry's and McCormick Lemon & Pepper Seasoning Salt (my personal favorite). She browns about 1/4 stick of butter on a cast iron grill pan before adding the steak, and even goes so far as to show you how to achieve beautiful criss-cross grill marks on the meat. The post may be a decade old, but the great information is timeless. The step-by-step images make it extremely easy to follow and re-create. Beyond the solid recipe, Ree's humor brightly shines: "If you follow the aforementioned instructions carefully, here are some possible scenarios that will result . . . If you cook it for your friends, they'll never invite you over to their house for dinner again. You will have permanently raised the bar." Honestly, I'm inspired to go back to her recipe archive and discover some more oldies but goodies. Next up on the list? Best Lasagna. Ever.
Starbucks Just Added 2 New Frappuccinos to Its Permanent Menu For the First Time in 16 Years!
It seems like there's a new Frappuccino at Starbucks every other week, but the truth is there hasn't been a permanent Frappuccino addition in years. But on May 1, Starbucks is adding two new Frappuccinos to its permanent menu for the first time in 16 years! Meet the Ultra Caramel Frappuccino and the Triple Mocha Frappuccino, which are exactly what they sound like: decadent blended coffee drinks with layers of either caramel sauce or dark mocha sauce.
What makes these Frappuccinos unique, however, is they start with a layer of Sweet Cold Brew Whipped Cream, which also just hit menus and features an infusion of cold-brew coffee, dark caramel sauce, and white chocolate mocha sauce. The Ultra Caramel Frappuccino then has a Dark Caramel Coffee Frappuccino layered in, and the Triple Mocha Frappuccino's second layer is a Mocha Coffee Frappuccino. To complete the layered effect, the drinks are topped with another layer of Sweet Cold Brew Whipped Cream and a swirl of "smoky dark caramel sauce" (for the Ultra Caramel) or "rich dark mocha sauce" (for the Triple Mocha). Talk about an indulgent coffee order!
Are you drooling yet? Look for these on the menu the next time you need a sugary, caffeinated pick-me-up.

5 Words and Phrases to Ban From Your Vocabulary to Improve Your Mental Health
Though the expression says "talk is cheap," I'm not so sure this is always true. In fact, my experience giving therapy to hundreds of people tells me that talk, in fact, can be very, very costly to our health and well-being if we're saying the wrong things. I present you with the words and phrases that should be banned from our vocabularies to improve the state of our precious mental health.
1. "But . . ."
Who knew this three letter word could be so consequential? Interestingly, "but" is defined as a word that "indicates the impossibility of anything other than what is being stated." I would go to the gym, but I'm just too tired. I would save money, but I really want that new Prada bag. The moment we utter this conjunction, it's as if we have no choice but to obey only one of our desires.
The thing about saying "but" is that it glosses over the complexity of our experiences and encourages us to think in black-and-white terms. Life is not a simple thing. As such, I encourage people to start replacing their but's with and's to help make space for the nuances of their experiences. Surely we can want to go to the gym and feel tired, can't we? The moment we start swapping 'but' with 'and,' we give ourselves a hell of a lot more wiggle room.
2. "Should"
"Should" is a word of obligation. It's also loaded with scripts from our culture, society, or family of origin that we often aren't particularly aware of. When you say you should go to the party despite feeling exhausted, for example, the idea that you should prioritize being social versus well-rested didn't come out of nowhere; somewhere along the way, you absorbed that message from somewhere or someone. The question is: Where did it come from? Who said it to you most often? Any time you hear a "should" slip out of your mouth, let it be an invitation to be curious about where it stems from and how it's affecting your day-to-day behaviors.
3. "I deserve it."
There's an air of entitlement that comes with this phrase, no? After all, it implies that you are so worthy, important, hard-working, or what have you that it would be ludicrous for you to not be rewarded. In reality, I'd argue that none of us "deserve" anything other than basic human rights. Beyond that, none of us really deserve anything. Certainly, we can feel like we've earned things, but saying we deserve something is akin to saying we expect to be rewarded and will be displeased if we aren't. Furthermore, using this phrase sets us up for a potentially damaging reward-versus-punishment mentality. For example, in saying you deserve that glass of wine after a long day, you're also implying that you don't deserve to deprive yourself. Again, this lures us into an overly simplistic, black-or-white way of thinking that ignores the complexities of our experiences. Instead of saying you deserve something, say you'd really like something instead. That way, your expectations stay in check and you resist thinking of life's happenings as rewards or punishments.
4. "I hope."
Now, when I invite you to remove "I hope" from your vocabulary, I'm not saying you shouldn't be hopeful. What I'm saying is that hoping for something implies that it's out of reach. "I hope to open my own business one day" sounds very different from "I am going to open my own business one day." Indeed, there's sense of complacency to saying you hope to do something. Hoping isn't what you need; doing is.
5. "Never" and "always"
These are absolute terms that are far too unforgiving. When we say our partner never does the dishes or that they're always late, what we're really doing is perpetuating negative (and inaccurate) self-talk and relationship cycles. Further, we stop ourselves from being able to see the positive moments in our relationship or life in general when we're so fixated on these fleeting negative moments. Even replacing "always" with "often" and never with "rarely" is a step in the right direction.
These words and phrases are so common in our everyday vocabulary that we likely don't notice how often we actually say them. But making these simple changes can have profound impacts on your mental health and overall well-being, particularly in terms of expanding your perspective and catalyzing mental flexibility.

Michelle Obama Just Perfectly Summed Up the Hypocrisy of the GOP
If anyone is going to expertly shred the current administration without so much as a single mention of our president's name, you can bet that it's going to be Michelle Obama.
Speaking at a Sept. 22 tech conference in Utah, the former first lady answered questions in an hour-long moderated conversation that shed light on her true feelings about the current state of American politics. As initially reported by the Salt Lake City Tribune, Mrs. Obama took the opportunity to address the flaws she sees in the nationalist, "America-first" rhetoric that's played a central role in Donald Trump's rise to power. "We live in a big country and a big world," she said before noting that her husband's White House was one built on hope while the current administration is one built on fear.
Obama also expertly called out the hypocrisy that often surrounds the conservative discourse on health care. "You can't just want to help someone in a hurricane and not make sure they can go to the doctor when they're sick," she said to an audience over 1,000 people. But while it's refreshing to hear Michelle Obama's take on our current political climate, she also made it very clear that she's not interested in a run for office anytime soon. When a member of the crowd shouted out that Obama should run for president, she was quick to shut it down. "That's still shocking. Like, what?" Obama said, adding, "Are you kidding me? No."
Even if Michelle Obama isn't ready to run for president yet, we can only hope that she throws her wit and sass into helping to get one of these highly qualified women into office in 2020.
So Long, Screenshots! Instagram Finally Launched the Spotify Feature You've Been Waiting For
Instagram just announced a new way to flex your taste in music with your followers - one that's so easy, it's impossible not to get behind. The app has now made it so that you can directly share any Spotify song to Instagram Stories, which will then allow followers to conveniently click on the song and listen to it themselves on their own Spotify app.
Here's exactly how it works: as you're listening to a song within Spotify, click on the three-dots icon next to the song title. Select "share," and you'll be presented with a list of other apps to share the song on. (Spoiler alert: Instagram will soon be on that list.) Spotify will then create a custom graphic optimized for Instagram Stories. You'll then be free to add to your Stories - or send via a direct message instead.
In addition to Spotify, Instagram also announced a similar feature with the GoPro app. In the future, it's possible that Instagram will roll out integrated features with other apps, perhaps even music apps like Apple Music or Tidal. In the meantime, we'll get a head start by toying around with this new feature - one we're already certain we're going to love.
Move Over, Tinder - Facebook Is Getting Into the Dating Game
If you're one of the many single people among the 2.2 billion Facebook users around the world, get excited: Facebook is officially getting into the dating game. And better still, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told a roaring crowd at the F8 developer conference on May 1 that the new feature will be "focused on long-term relationships, not just hookups." Yes, please, and thank you, Facebook!
In truth, the move marks a strong strategic pivot on Facebook's part, cementing its commitment to building more of an on-platform community. As Zuckerberg pointed out in his remarks, one in three relationships begin online and a staggering 200 million of the platform's users are currently listed as single. There's also never been a better time for Facebook to move into online dating, as the fallout from the Cambridge Analytica scandal has forced several key competitors in the space - including Bumble, Hinge, and Tinder - to move away from their heavy reliance on leveraging Facebook data to connect users with people in similar social circles or with similar interests. Don't just take my word for it, though - just take a look at the impact the news had on legacy dating site Match's stock price mere moments after it was announced on Facebook's F8 live stream:
Match shares fall as much as 10% after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announces new dating feature for the site https://t.co/xWywlCPlDK pic.twitter.com/oAKn80xpEZ
- Bloomberg Technology (@technology) May 1, 2018
The feature won't be rolling out until later this year, but POPSUGAR has learned a couple key things about what the new Facebook dating venture will encompass. First, you never have to spend a single second worrying about who can see your dating profile - it's completely separate from your News Feed, and you'll never see your friends on the platform (and they won't see you). Second, you'll be able to unlock events or groups to connect with people who you may have encountered in real life; think the old Missed Connections on Craigslist, only a hell of a lot more real. Finally, expect a brand-new inbox to appear in relation to all things dating, one that's strictly text only - so again, kiss those unwanted photo intros goodbye and prepare for something a lot more substantive when it comes to meeting your match.
So, now all we have to do is wait for the Facebook gods to begin their rollout - but you can bet we'll be eagerly awaiting the launch and will make sure you're the first to hear when Facebook Dating finally goes live.
Celebs Are Sharing Their Google Arts & Culture Face Matches, and Oh My Gosh
Unless you've been living under a rock, you've likely come across a few (OK, dozens) of social media posts about Google's Arts & Culture app. Though the app was originally created so users could admire famous artworks at their fingertips, a brand-new feature has the internet up in arms: one that allows you to see your portrait painting doppelgängers in a matter of seconds.
So how exactly does this newly viral tool work? All you have to do is download the Google Arts & Culture app from either Google Play or the iTunes store, and scroll until you see the "Is your portrait in a museum?" feature, which prompts you to snap a quick selfie. Once it receives your snapshot, the app sifts through the thousands of artworks in its database and matches your face to a collection of supposedly similar paintings in side-by-side collages, along with the exact percentage of how much the two images resemble each other. Some are pretty spot on, while others are, er, a bit off, to say the least.
The app is pretty darn hysterical, especially because it'll match you with different portraits if you make a funny face in your selfie. As soon as people started catching wind of the addicting feature, a snowball effect took place, and seemingly the entire internet began sharing their artistic look-alikes - including celebrities. In case you need some motivation to finally delete some photos to free up space on your phone for the Google Arts & Culture app, allow these hilarious celeb 'grams and tweets to convince you.
Instagram Gives the Middle Finger to Bullying With New Comment Filters
POPSUGAR Photography / Diggy Lloyd
It's probably difficult to monitor all the comments on Instagram considering there are 800 million users, but the company is committed to erasing bullying and harassment. So on May 1, Instagram announced its Bullying Comments Filter, which automatically filters out comments that are intended to harass or upset people - in other words, bullies' unwelcome comments. "It hides comments containing attacks on a person's appearance or character, as well as threats to a person's well-being or health," Instagram noted in a statement, explaining it ensures that people never have to see the comments that they would normally find offensive on their posts. Take that, hate-spreading trolls.
Source: Erin Cullum
To commit to the cause even further, Instagram also promises to take additional actions - such as banning certain users - after repeated problems are flagged. This expands on Instagram's antibullying initiative, which began last year with the introduction of an Offensive Comments Filter. If you go to your "comments" settings in your app, you'll see that the "Hide Offensive Comments" feature is already turned on (the default for all users). In this section, you can also choose to block comments from certain people. The comment-hiding feature automatically filters out "toxic and divisive comments," particularly when aimed at at-risk groups. With a clearer definition of bullying, however, the new version of the bullying-targeted filter now detects even more comments that Instagram does not tolerate.
Instagram is all about self-expression and sharing personal moments, and I think we can all agree that it's meant to be a safe, happy place for enjoyable scrolling! People who feel the need to comment on a celebrity's appearance, harass a positive post with nonsensical hatred, or simply bully for the sake of bullying would most likely not say those things to people's faces. If Instagram is making it harder for bullying to spread on one of the world's most popular platforms, we'll give that a big thumbs up.
Prepare to Squint For Hours Trying to Find the Hidden Animals in This Painting
Fancy yourself a keen observer? Do you always find Waldo within minutes? Then try your hand at the latest Playbuzz optical illusion quiz that's driving the internet a little loopy.
The quiz, created by Alan Sherin, features a moving painting GIF. The objective? Find the four hidden animals in it. See if you can find them in the illustration below.
Can't spot them? The four animals are a fox, antelope, bat, and flamingo. The bat, antelope, and fox are all on the rock on the far right. The flamingo is located at the bottom left, near the patch of green grass. It might not be as infuriating as trying to find a cell phone that looks exactly like the carpet it's laying on, but it's pretty damn close.
These "Tech Tats" Are Going to Upgrade Your Life and Have You Feeling Like a Robotic Badass
Ever been way too busy to make a doctor's appointment for your physical, but wished there was another way for them to collect all your medical information? Or, what about wanting to pay for dinner with your credit card without ever having to take out your wallet? While it may seem too good to be true, Chaotic Moon has developed a solution to do all of that and so much more just by attaching a little tattoo to your arm. Back in 2015, the software development firm created a prototype for these all-encompassing "Tech Tats," and they have recently resurfaced because it is just SO cool.
The brainiacs at Chaotic Moon have developed this product with the medical, banking, and fitness industries in mind. "The Tech Tattoos can really tie in everything into one package," said Eric Schneider, creative technologist, hardware at Chaotic Moon. "So it can look at early signs of fever, your vital signs, heart rate, everything that it needs to look at to notify you that you're getting sick or your child's getting sick."
How is this different from your current wearable? Well, it can go anywhere on your body, not just your wrist and it can even be washed off like a temporary tattoo. They create a circuit on your skin and are able to monitor body temperature, stress levels, and more medical data from your body. It's unknown when the Tech Tats will be available to the public, but Mashable reports that the ultimate goal is to make it super cheap, so you can buy a box like a box of Band-Aids.
