6 Key Mistakes You Might Be Making With Concealer
It's not just enough to spend five minutes a day applying your makeup: you need to make sure you have the right products, tools, and techniques to make the most of your look. While concealer might seem simple, there's actually more to it than you think. When it comes to finding the perfect concealer for your skin and complexion, it's all about trial and error to see what works and what doesn't. You should also visit a makeup artist for advice if you're struggling to pick your favorite. Here are the worst mistakes you could be making when putting on concealer in the morning.
Cruelty-Free Mascaras That Even Lash Extension Addicts Will Love
If you're thinking of transitioning your beauty routine to cruelty-free, we're here to help. There's no reason that cosmetics brands need to test on animals (it's not required by law in the United States), and many of your favorite brands have sworn off testing on our furry friends. Most beauty junkies don't want to sacrifice makeup quality - especially when it comes to getting long, thick, voluminous lashes - and you don't have to.
We've rounded up some of the blackest, thickest, most incredible mascaras on the market that all happen to be 100 percent cruelty-free. Keep reading to find your next go-to mascara without harming any animals.
These 8 Short Styles Are Ideal For Fine-Haired Beauties
We all grumble about one thing or another when it comes to our physical traits, and that definitely includes the texture and thickness of our hair. Thick-haired people lament the hours spent just trying to blow-dry, and curly-haired folks are forever trying to figure out a way to tame frizz. And then there are those with fine hair whose primary objective is to determine the best way to boost volume and texture. We're focusing on the latter category today.
"Fine hair can achieve just as many versatile looks as thick, dense hair given a few essential styling aids and insights," noted Amanda Elaine Killen, Amika's Pro Educator. "First, fine hair like any other hair, needs to be hydrated properly to maintain health, so don't throw out your conditioners in defeat just yet. Try a lightweight yet nourishing conditioner - like Normcore Signature Conditioner ($9) - which is free of the parabens found in many conditioners that cause buildup and weigh hair down."
She also suggested using a matte texturing spray and/or volumizer to create additional texture and absorb the excess oil that causes too much slip in your style. Once you've got those basics down, the salon chair is your oyster. We've rounded up eight short hairstyles that are especially great for thinner hair since they better allow you to volumize and accentuate what you're already rocking.

Jaw-Dropping Photos From a C-Section Birth
Jessica Bender is used to snapping pictures of children's birthdays, not their actual births. But when she was given the opportunity to capture a friend's C-section delivery, the Canadian photographer couldn't say no. Granted, she didn't have much of a choice. On the day of the procedure, Jessica received a call from mom-to-be Carly saying that her husband Nathan had to have emergency surgery and she needed Jessica to step into the support role.
"It was an odd feeling to be so excited that someone needed to have emergency surgery," Jessica writes in her blog. "I felt guilty for about 39 seconds." Stooped on a stool with a camera pressed to her face, Jessica waited for Elias to make his grand entrance. As Jessica eagerly watched doctors "cut open the midsection, layer by layer," Carly remained calm, cool, and collected.
"She has forever reframed what a C-section means to me," Jessica writes of her friend. "In the past, it was presented as something to fear, but seeing Carly meet her baby . . . there was zero fear."
Read on to see Carly's fearless C-section, and meet baby Elias.

5 Ways to Baby-Proof Your Marriage and Make It Stronger Than Ever
This post, written by Robyn Stein DeLuca, PhD, was originally shared on YourTango.
Despite the challenges of becoming first-time parents, your marriage can thrive.
Having your first baby? Congratulations!
As new parents, that precious bundle of joy will be a miracle to behold, and you will feel love like never before.
Since those little angels can't do much for themselves, you and your partner are in charge of all of their needs - and unfortunately, all of those new responsibilities first-time parents encounter can take a toll on your relationship if you're not prepared. In fact, research shows that for many couples, satisfaction with their relationship goes down after the birth of a first baby.
Fortunately, there are many proven strategies to prevent that from happening to your marriage after having a baby.
Here are 5 tips to keep your relationship a source of strength (rather than a source of conflict), while adjusting to your new life with a baby:
1. Talk about your ideal vision of parenthood - before your baby arrives.
One of the most powerful reasons why some couples become dissatisfied with their relationship after bringing a baby home is that life turns out to be different than how they expected.
Partners may have different expectations about who is going to do the late-night feedings, wash bottles or reduce their working hours. There can also be conflicting ideas about the ideal style of parenting, or how much leisure time either of you get.
The best way to avoid frustration and resentment is to put your cards on the table before the baby comes.
Have honest conversations with your partner about what each of you is counting on, and try to negotiate the gaps. This probably needs to happen over a series of several conversations, because there is a lot of ground to cover. But this kind of preparation is invaluable in reducing the amount of conflict between you and your spouse in those first few trying months.
2. Express your needs clearly.
You and your partner have all kinds of needs: physical, emotional, and practical.
You will have the most success getting your needs accommodated if you don't expect your partner to be a mind-reader. Say what you need.
You will also be more likely to get what you need if you can ask for it in a way that is respectful, like: "I could really use an hour to shower and have a few minutes to myself before you leave for work. Do you think you could get up a little early for me tomorrow?" versus simply complaining, "I'm so sick of not having any time to myself."
Also, make it a practice to trade favors with each other. Offer to trade a night out with the girls for you for a night out with the boys for him. When each of you is willing to sacrifice for the other, compromise comes easier - and your partnership gets stronger.
3. Agree on an "emergency button" if things escalate.
Sometimes, despite all your efforts, emotions will get out of control. Sleep deprivation alone can make you hyper-sensitive. Then combine that with a colicky, inconsolable baby who spits up every meal he has and a mother-in-law who questions everything you do, and you will be ready to explode at the slightest provocation.
If you suddenly find yourself in a screaming match, it helps to have a plan in place beforehand to stop it in its tracks before one of you says something you don't mean that could do irreparable harm to your marriage. After all, time-outs can be just as useful for adults as they are for toddlers.
Maybe your emergency button is a goofy code word, like "cowabunga", which you both will know means "I love you but I can't continue this conversation in a rational way, so let's stop for a while."
It's probably a good idea if one of you leaves the room at this point, too. Table the conversation for a while or even a day, if need be.
4. Plan alternate means of intimacy.
After nine months of pregnancy and the very physical work of caring for a newborn, you may not feel like sharing your body with anyone else for a while. This is understandable. But you don't want to lose the emotional bond that intimacy brings.
Think about ways you can feel comfort and connection with your partner outside of sex. Maybe just laying down in bed together and talking about your day while cuddling for 20 minutes. Or setting aside a time to reminisce about what excited you the day you met, or when you knew you were falling in love. Or sitting quietly together giving mutual foot massages.
When a baby is born, you both may be simply in survival mode: feedings, diapers, and trying to get the baby to sleep on some kind of schedule.
But you want your relationship to survive too. And these moments of intentional intimacy, even if brief, can help you maintain that special connection that brought you together in the first place.
5. Commit to regular expressions of love and appreciation.
Caring for a new baby brings emotional highs and lows and can be equally thrilling (she smiled!) and frustrating (why won't she go to sleep?). Not a lot is in your control those first few months.
But one constant you can provide is love and appreciation for each other. You may be secure in your partner's love and he in yours, but there is nothing like being reminded that you are special in his eyes and vice versa.
In person or even by text, a heartfelt "I love you" feeds the soul. And if one or both of you has had a particularly trying day, don't engage in the "exhaustion Olympics," but rather take a moment to acknowledge that your sweetie has had a rough day and that you appreciate everything he or she does for you and for your family.
The relationship you have with your partner is the bedrock of your new family. Relationship trouble after the birth of a baby is not a given, but good relationships don't just happen either.
With intentional care, yours can remain a source of strength and comfort. A strong, loving, and stable relationship is one of the best gifts you can give yourselves and to your new baby.

The Only Thing Cuter Than This Matching Boy and Dog Is Their Adoption Story
If you're anything like us, your Instagram notifications are a revolving door of friends tagging you in photos of cute dogs. Although we've come across the adorable Reagandoodle account countless times, we had no idea that there was such a touching story behind the photos of a little boy and his matching pup. Reagan and Little Buddy were both 11 months old when they came into each other's lives, and they will forever be best friends.
Reagan (the dog) is owned by Sandi Swiridoff, and her daughter took in Little Buddy as a foster child more than two years ago. Sandi told Love What Matters that Reagan and Little Buddy "bonded instantly and have been besties ever since." They share everything - birthdays, outfits, naps, dinner, and more!
However, their bond is deeper than just adorable photos. Since Little Buddy came into the family's lives years ago, they have used the dog's popular Instagram feed as a way to raise awareness for foster children and families. Sandi has even been working on a book about Reagandoodle and Little Buddy's story, which will donate all proceeds to an Oregon-based non-profit called Foster Parents' Night Out for parents of foster children.
Sandi also revealed that her daughter and son-in-law have begun the adoption process for Little Buddy! Although it's been two amazing years, this is only the beginning of the duo's special bond.

The 10 Best Places to Go For Moms Who Want to Vacation All by Themselves
I was kayaking around Anacapa Island off the coast of Ventura, CA. The setting was stunning, but I was more focused on what - or rather, who - wasn't there: my 2-year-old daughter, Lucy, who was over 3,000 miles away in New Jersey with her babysitter. I felt guilty when I initially decided to go on the trip, but there was no way I could say no. I had always wanted to visit, and while the islands are family friendly, I knew Lucy wouldn't be up for things like hiking or kayaking. Besides, I didn't want to take the trip for her. I wanted to take the trip for myself.
I'm a single mom, and I don't have family nearby. That meant I needed to hire a babysitter for three days. I went back and forth about going a ridiculous number of times, but as I sat on the water, the waves lapping at my kayak, I was so thankful. Sure, I missed Lucy, but I hadn't realized how much I had missed myself. I hadn't kayaked since well before she was born, even though I used to lead kayak expeditions when I was in college. I had missed allowing my thoughts to unfold without interruption. I had missed letting myself set the schedule.
When I came back, I felt happy to see Lucy and happy in my own skin. I felt more energized, more relaxed, and absolutely certain that a solo mom trip isn't bad - it's wonderful. To be totally honestly, I think that alone time made me a better parent. It made me more aware of my own needs, more appreciative of the bond Lucy and I have, and thankful that the "old" me is still there. And I can't wait to plan another trip, so if you're also in need of a little getaway, keep reading for 10 of the best places you can travel to - all by yourself.
I'm That Really Laid-Back Mom, and This Is My Only Major Rule
I consider myself pretty laid-back when it comes to parenting. Mind you, my oldest is only 4, but since she was a baby, my friends and family have commented on how I treat her as though she's my third or fourth kid. She could run a football-field-length away from me at the park and I would watch comfortably from afar. As the years have gone by, I haven't found a need to change this approach and will probably continue to be this way as my kids grow up. I can't see into the future (if she's anything like me, the future holds some doozies once she's a teen), but because of the one rule on which I stand firm, I believe my kids will be able to make the right choices, and if they don't, they'll find a way to learn from them. That rule is having manners and respect.
I want them to make mistakes, because that's how they'll learn, but instead of chastising them for it, I'll support them through it.
It's expected that my children use their manners by saying the appropriate "pleases" and "thank yous," but I also expect them to behave appropriately in multiple scenarios. Respect encompasses showing consideration for their parents, all adults, and their friends, while also having respect for themselves. I think the reason I'm OK with having only one main rule as a mom is because it trickles over into all aspects of raising a kind and compassionate child.
For example, we were at the grocery store one day and the checkout clerk offered my daughter a sticker. While she's usually very good at saying thank you, she refused to say a word. There was a line of people behind us, but I calmly and firmly said, "You forgot to share your manners with this nice lady," and my daughter continued to keep her head down. The clerk gave me an "It's OK" look, to which I kindly replied, "No, she does have something she'd like to say to you." I asked my daughter if she was feeling shy, and she nodded. I told her it's OK to feel shy, but that it's important to be polite when someone does something nice for you. The whole ordeal lasted a few minutes until finally, my daughter lifted her eyes to the clerk and said, "Thank you." The clerk said, "You're welcome," then looked at me and thanked me for pushing, adding that she offers kids stickers all day and it's rare any of them say thank you, and even rarer that a parent makes them.
It may seem small or silly to some, but it's important to me that kindness not go unnoticed. If I teach my children that something as simple as getting a sticker should be acknowledged with thanks, maybe they'll understand that bigger things deserve respect as well. While I allow my children to run amok at the playground, wildly exploring and testing boundaries, I am adamant when it comes to using their manners. I like to think this approach to parenting allows my children to explore the world on their own and gain confidence and self-esteem while never doubting that I'm here for support.
I've gotten looks and sometimes even comments from other moms at the playground when my tiny toddler is climbing a piece of equipment without me helping or standing right behind her, and while I would never allow my kids to put themselves or others in any real danger, I don't think it's the end of the world if she falls. And if she does fall (and it's obviously not a bad one), I'll watch while she gets up, brushes herself off, and continues to play. I want my kids to make mistakes, because that's how they'll learn, but instead of chastising them for it, I'll support them through it.

Chanel's Resort Collection Included a New Take on Tweed and a Full Blown Cruise Liner
Karl Lagerfeld is known for creating some of the most spectacular fashion shows, but his latest set might be the most monumental yet. For Chanel's 2019 Resort collection, the designer took the cruise theme quite literally by turning the Grand Palais into a marina. Complete with a full-blown cruise ship named after Coco Chanel's villa in the South of France, it was a nod to her first lifestyle collections, which she introduced in the late 1920s.
As guests sat in front of the ship, models, including Gigi and Bella Hadid, made their way down the runway in tweed dresses, sailor pants, short dresses, cropped jackets, and embellished berets. Once again, Lagerfeld offered an array of pretty options to wear on your next vacation, and cruises have never been so fashionable.

Meghan Markle Reportedly Cried When She Found Her Wedding Dress, and Now We're Tearing Up
Update May 4, 2018: If you were wondering if Meghan Markle got emotional when she found her wedding dress, the answer is a resounding yes. Meghan's gal pal, Priyanka Chopra, stopped by Bravo's Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, and Priyanka was asked if the soon-to-be royal shed any tears when she found her dream dress. While the star didn't flat out say yes, she did smile before burying her face in her hands, which to Cohen, and fellow guest Sebastian Stan, seemed like a "yes!"
Update Apr. 13, 2018: Victoria Beckham visited The Late Late Show With James Corden, where she was celebrating her upcoming Reebok merch featuring Shaq, and she was asked about her attendance at the royal wedding and whether she'll be designing the dress. "I'm not doing the dress . . . sadly not, but I'm sure she will look incredible in whatever she wears," Victoria said. While Meghan has worn Victoria's label before, it looks like she will stick to RTW for now.
Update Apr. 4, 2018: We may have another reason to believe that Meghan Markle has chosen Erdem as the designer of her wedding dress. People has reported that the fashion house run by British-based, Canadian-born designer Erdem Moralioglu, has taken its public relations operation in-house rather than using an agency. This has led many to wonder if this was done to protect Meghan's privacy and prevent any leaks about her dress. There's also a sweet connection if Meghan chooses the brand because this would be a tribute to her new home in the United Kingdom and a nod Canada, which is where she filmed Suits.
Update Feb. 21, 2018: People have been speculating about Meghan Markle's wedding dress designer, and fashion houses such as Erdem, Ralph & Russo, Roland Mouret, and the queen's dressmaker Stewart Parvin are all on the table. But recently, it's been reported that a spike in votes on Alexander McQueen has caused bookies to suspend betting on this very special event.
Sarah Burton designed Kate Middleton's Alexander McQueen gown for her nuptials in 2011, and Meghan recently wore a tailored black suit from the fashion house - so there is a connection there. But a spokesperson told Daily Mail that "We've now suspended this market after seeing some interesting betting [on Tuesday, Feb. 21] on Alexander McQueen, who went from 16/1 to 8/1 in a very short space of time." This has led some folks to suspect a "leak" in the news.
Original post: Meghan Markle's received plenty of sketches from designers (including Inbal Dror) who have imagined her future wedding dress, and she's reportedly had one fitting at Kensington Palace. This did not go down without her trusty stylist and friend Jessica Mulroney, who flew in from Toronto to advise her on her bridal look. This all comes from royal reporter Omid Scobie, who confirmed the news to ABC and posted a tweet on his account:
Sources tell me that Meghan Markle has officially picked a wedding dress designer and had her first fitting at Kensington Palace last week👰🏻
- Omid Scobie (@_mio) January 19, 2018
"They've tried on a number of different designs and are currently whittling it down to pick the best design for the day . . . During the process, Meghan expressed the desire to wear something simple and classy and very elegant," Scobie told ABC.
There are now strong rumors that Roland Mouret is the chosen bridal dress designer. Though all he said on the topic to Women's Wear Daily was, "Mmmmm, I don't want to say. No comment. It's . . . there is no comment on that. She's a friend. And that's . . . I can't say." (Sounds kind of like a yes to us?)
It was further revealed that Mulroney is assisting the royal couple with planning many different aspects of the ceremony, which will take place on May 19. While we wait for more information, read on to see Meghan and Jessica together at an event in 2016, then check out Meghan's first wedding dress and dream a whimsical dream as you imagine her walking down the aisle.

Emily Ratajkowski Could Sell Anything, but Her Swimwear Is Unreal
Emily Ratajkowski may not have the most affordable swimwear line, but the teeny bikinis and high-leg one-pieces in her Inamorata Swim collection are certainly some of the hottest suits out there. We love her penchant for sweet polka dots and sultry snakeskin, but what we really love is just how jaw-droppingly hot she makes every piece look (even when her look is more birthday suit than bathing suit). Our favorite look (and perhaps the only one we could pull off wearing in public) is this mustard yellow triangle bikini, but you can check out all of her spicy (and borderline NSFW) looks ahead.
Olivia Wilde in a Swimsuit Might Be the Hottest Thing in the World - Wait, No, It Definitely Is
Whether she's vacationing with partner Jason Sudeikis and their children in Hawaii or just sharing a bikinigram with her Instagram followers, Olivia Wilde's swimsuit game is always on point. Olivia has rocked many bikinis, but it seems she prefers slick maillots on the beach when she's paddleboarding or taking a walk. Regardless of her whereabouts, Olivia's swimwear choices always make a statement - one that sticks with you. Her toned physique might contribute to the image, but if you read on for some styling tips we've gleaned from the awesomely witty actress, you'll find that you too can rock a suit like Olivia during swim season.

So This Is What It Means to Have a Heavy Period, According to a Doctor
After years of living with your period, you know a thing or two about your cycle by now. Although there are many common symptoms, like bloating and cramps, each of us experiences our period in a different way, so it's hard to say what's normal and what's not. But there are a few red flags that you should never ignore, according to Alyssa Dweck, MD, gynecologist in New York, author of The Complete A to Z For Your V: A Woman's Guide to Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Your Vagina, and the latest spokesperson for Monistat.
One thing Dr. Dweck is often asked is what constitutes a heavy period? More importantly, when does a heavy period become something to speak to your doctor about? It's a question that many women don't feel comfortable asking because talking about blood isn't exactly the most pleasant thing in the world - but it's a topic that needs to be discussed, especially if you think you might have an abnormally heavy flow.
"It's so hard to quantify the amount of blood that people are passing," Dr. Dweck said, particularly because it always looks like a lot more when it's sitting in a bowl of toilet water. But here's the distinguishing factor: "Our usual guideline is if you're soaking through two super tampons or pads in an hour, that's heavy enough to warrant concern."
If this sounds familiar, don't hesitate speaking to your doctor. Having this kind of heavy period, which is technically called menorrhagia, could mean you have a hormonal imbalance, which would cause the lining of your uterus to get too thick and result in a whole lot of blood. It could also point to growths of polyps or fibroids in your uterus, which result in heavier, longer periods.
All of these are treatable, but only if you speak to your doctor and come up with a game plan. Another thing Dr. Dweck says to keep an eye out for is "if something changes significantly" in your cycle. If your flow suddenly gets heavy for no apparent reason and it stays that way for a couple of months, schedule an appointment with your doc.
When it comes to your menstrual health, it's better to err on the side of caution. Besides, you have nothing to lose by simply talking to your doctor, even if it turns out there's nothing wrong.
This Is the Workout I Did For 1 Year That Finally Helped Me Lose My Belly Fat
Last July, I only signed up for a month of CrossFit so I could write a post about how stupid I thought it was. Coming from a running and yoga background, and never once setting foot in a gym, I thought those people doing countless burpees, flipping tires, and grunting while lifting weights were nuts. I'm the first to admit that I was absolutely wrong. After just one month, CrossFit jump-started the most life-changing physical and mostly mental transformation I have ever experienced (aside from becoming a mom).
I decided to commit to CrossFit for an entire year, going four to six times per week, to see what would happen. I just hit my one-year CrossFitversary (fist bump to me!) and feel compelled to share my experiences in the hopes that they might inspire someone else who is thinking about trying CrossFit to finally take the (box)jump!
Before: July 2016
My journey actually didn't really go as planned, so I wanted to map out each month so you can see that progress wasn't all uphill for me. There were a few times when I actually lost faith in CrossFit and wanted to throw in the kettlebell towel - sorry, these puns are just too easy! I think anyone on any sort of fitness or weight-loss journey will be able to relate to this.
Throughout the 12 months, I weighed myself regularly and took monthly photos, just because I'm a science nerd and wanted to have actual data to compare from month to month. The numbers actually kind of shocked me.
Month 1, July: Starting weight: 122 pounds. Feeling awesome, I just wanted to get into the groove of learning all the different exercises and the correct form. I gave up running for CrossFit - bye-bye hour-long runs and hello seven- to 12-minute WODs! Goal number one: do a pull-up.
Month 2, August: Weight: 118 pounds. Still on my CrossFit high, I was actually bummed that I had to miss about two weeks of classes because of traveling, but I tried to do workouts while on the road, like this 200-rep bodyweight workout.
Month 3, September: Weight: 121 pounds. I climbed a frickin' 15-foot rope! Enough said. I also hurt my back in the middle of the month, putting too much weight on the bar when doing front squats (I was trying to keep up with the 60-year-old woman next to me!). So I took a little break, worried that maybe people were right about CrossFit causing injuries. But after a few days, I felt fine. It was a good lesson in not allowing my ego to get the best of me and in paying more attention to my body and my ability level.
After: July 2017
Month 4, October: Weight: 122 pounds. The weather was starting to get chilly and the mornings a little darker, but I still stuck with getting up at 4:40 a.m. for those 5:45 workouts. I was really starting to get to know my CrossFit community, and every night these two women and I would text each other: "Class tomorrow?" It helped motivate me to go, even when I was insanely tired or sore.
Month 5, November: Weight: 123 pounds. After four months, my arms and back started getting thicker, my sports bras and jeans felt tighter, and I actually wanted to quit CrossFit and stopped going for few days. I was pissed that I was getting up so goddamn early every day, working my ass off, and eating clean . . . and still had my baby belly. My husband was actually the one who convinced me to stick with it, knowing how happy it made me, and how strong and confident I was feeling. Other women at my gym also made me feel better about my muscles bulking up a little, reminding me not to focus on how I looked, but on what I could accomplish. They also said that for them, nine months was when they started to lose weight, so I stuck with it.
Month 6, December: Weight: 124 pounds. For some reason, I thought the six-month mark would be monumental and I would finally have the slim and ripped body I was convinced CrossFit would offer me. So when I compared photos from Month 1 to Month 6, I was embarrassed that my body wasn't there yet. I had to remind myself that any progress was still progress, no matter how small, and it motivated me even more to push myself during those workouts and stick to eating healthy.
After: July 2017
Month 7, January: Weight: 126 pounds. Holidays + my birthday = tons of cookies, overeating, not exercising much, and feeling like crap. Oh well. I did finally get two strict pull-ups: goal crushed! I didn't think it'd take me seven months, but better late than never.
I also had conflicting emotions about adding weight to my bar because I was worried that lifting heavier would make me bulk up even more. So I started to back off on the weight. One day my coach, Kristi, joked a little and said, "Sugar, your bar is looking a little light." So I told her my concerns, and she admitted to having the same thoughts when she started CrossFit six years ago. She basically threw out her scale and slowly started to fall in love with feeling strong, and now she loves her big muscles. "I wish mine were bigger," she said. So that started to change my perspective about how I felt women were supposed to look and how I thought I wanted to look. I said, "F*ck it!" and started adding more weight and really challenging myself. It's an amazing feeling to press a heavy bar over your head!
Month 8, February: Weight: 123 pounds. After seven months of doing CrossFit, I felt like I was gaining muscle, but I still had a layer of fat that wouldn't budge. I knew it had everything to do with me eating too much! Aside from giving up sugar for the month of January, about halfway through the month I started doing intermittent fasting (IF) to see if it would help.
Month 9, March: Weight: 123 pounds. I did three ring pull-ups! I also completed one month of intermittent fasting and noticed my belly getting a little slimmer. Woot!
After: July 2017
Month 10, April: Weight: 123 pounds. This is the month I noticed my upper-body strength coming in handy during yoga. I could now hold handstands for over 20 seconds. And with two months of IF under my belt, I was starting to see some definition in my abs! Lifting heavier and pushing myself more during workouts coupled with getting a handle on my diet are what really started to make my body transform.
Month 11, May: Weight: 124 pounds. I pressed into a handstand, crushing a goal I've had ever since I started yoga in 1999. And after three months of continuing with IF, I was pretty psyched that my baby belly fat started to shrink more, even though the scale showed weight gain. I was also drinking more water (like a gallon a day), which helped with eating less and belly bloat.
Month 12, June: Weight: 122 pounds. The final month of my year-long CrossFit journey, I experimented a little more with my diet to try to solve some bloating issues, and I committed to a two-week fruit, veggie, and nut diet, which helped reveal my first glimpses of a real six-pack. I actually wore a bikini at a public pool for the first time ever, which for me was a HUGE deal. But even huger was the fact that from kettlebell swings to wall balls to overhead squats, I was lifting way more than I was when I started. I not only looked stronger; I WAS stronger!
Final Thoughts
I drank the CrossFit Kool-Aid and now I'm hooked. I am so grateful for the inner strength and confidence I feel every day, in the gym and in my life. The absolute greatest benefit is the freedom I feel from the constant negative thoughts I used to have about my body, of always trying to lose weight and get leaner and more toned. Of incessantly thinking about food: what I should eat, what I shouldn't eat, feeling bad when I ate too much, and worrying about when I was going to fit in my next workout. And what I was doing wasn't working at all, so it's an amazing feeling to put in the effort and actually see results. And I'm not done yet. I just signed up for a year-long membership so I can crush some more goals - muscle up; I'm coming for ya!
I know what you're thinking - that CrossFit is cult-like or too extreme or "not your thing" - because I was there, too. I thought it was only for burly men or athletic women or 20-year-olds or people who are already crazy-fit. But anyone can benefit from CrossFit, no matter their ability level or age (there's a 72-year-old woman in my class who can deadlift as much as me!). Everyone has to start somewhere, and I'm so glad I took the plunge a year ago. CrossFit is hands down one of the best things that's ever happened to me, because it's helped me love myself in a way that I never thought possible, and that love spreads out into every aspect of my life. It could be the same for you, but you'll never know unless you try. So what are you waiting for?
4 Important Physical Symptoms of Emotional Stress You Shouldn't Ignore
For many of us, stress is just a byproduct of our everyday lives that we've learned to cope with, but it's important to deal with and resolve the causes of stress, because when left unchecked, stress can trigger mood disorders that can affect our mental health. According to Tim Hipgrave, Nuffield Health's emotional health lead, emotional stress can manifest itself in telltale ways, many of them physical. Read on to learn four physical signs that your mental and emotional health may be buckling under the strain.
Lack of Energy
Stress doesn't just affect your mind, it also affects you physiologically by releasing the hormone cortisol into your bloodstream, which mimics physical exertion by accelerating your breathing and heart rate, and leaves you feeling unduly tired and lethargic. Stress can also be to blame for lack of sleep as it disrupts your body's ability to regulate its sleep-wake instincts, causing insomnia.
Tooth Grinding
Teeth grinding can cause major problems with your oral health including jaw ache, permanent tooth damage, and headaches. Stress-induced tooth grinding is linked to heightened activity in your subconscious when you're asleep; as you're not alert, your body uses your mouth as the physical outlet for the increased stress.
Getting Sick Easily
When stress triggers the release of cortisol into the bloodstream, it inadvertently hinders your immune system's regular function. One important way it does this is by suppressing the release of the hormone DHEA, which supports immune function.
Changed Eating Habits
It's no shocker that when we're stressed, we tend to reach for short-term food fixes for our problems, but stress can affect our eating habits by making us grab the nearest chocolate bar. "Stress eating" is often triggered by the release of cortisol, which increases your appetite and coinciding with your low morale, leads you to reach for typical comfort foods. On the other hand, many who suffer from stress also experience a loss of appetite, which is believed to be linked to the presence of a corticotropin-releasing hormone that suppresses appetite.
