The Weight-Loss Tips Missing From Your Evening Routine
While losing weight isn't something that happens overnight, doing some prep work the night before can make all the difference when you step on the scale. If slimming down and becoming healthier are two goals at the top of your priority list, here are four must dos to make part of your weeknight routine.
3 Things You Need to Grasp in Order to Lose Weight For Good
You've been trying to lose weight for months or maybe even years. You finally drop enough to fit into those jeans you wore in college, but sooner or later, you can't even slip them over your thighs again. Why does losing weight have to be so hard? Here are some difficult things you'll need to swallow in order to lose the weight and keep it off for good.
Diets Aren't the Answer
While many people lose weight ditching carbs or going on a liquid diet, these methods can't last forever. These diets are often not nutritionally sound or so restrictive you end up binging on all the foods you crave. Plus, when you hit your goal weight and go back to your old eating habits, the weight is bound to come back.
Slimming down and being able to maintain this smaller version of yourself is all about making a lifestyle change. That means figuring out a healthy diet that can be maintained for the rest of your life. What's been proven to work is a diet full of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. Of course you're allowed to cheat every once in a while - and it can actually help diminish cravings - but indulgences should be in moderation. It'll take some getting used to, but soon you'll adapt to your new healthy way of eating and wonder how you ever used to down cheeseburgers, soda, and cookies every day.
Counting Calories Is a Must
Losing weight is about basic math: calories in cannot exceed the amount of calories the body uses up. And to lose weight, you'll need to create a calorie deficit. Counting calories may seem strict, but if you don't keep track of how much you eat, you may never reach your goal weight. Start by talking with your doctor about how much weight you want to lose, and he or she can help you figure out an appropriate daily calorie amount.
Many find success writing down their daily diet in a food journal, or with a weight-loss app, which logs the calorie amounts for food eaten. If you like to cook, plug your recipe into this Calorie Count tool and you can keep track of how many calories your favorite mac n' cheese contains.
You'll need ways to keep track of portion sizes too, and here are some great products you can use at home and on the go. You'll also want to arm yourself with calorie-saving tricks for eating out, when you hit happy hour, and during the weekend, as well as learn some creative food-swapping tricks to save calories.
Walking Isn't Enough
A healthy diet is key to losing weight, but if you have more than a few pounds to lose, that alone isn't the most effective way to get you to your goal weight. You'll have to incorporate exercise as well, and I don't mean just a walk around the block. Most recommendations say that to lose weight, you must exercise for at least an hour a day, five times a week. We're talking the kind that gets your heart rate up such as running, biking, or a cardio class at the gym. An hour may seem like a lot, but once you carve out that time in your schedule, it'll be something you look forward to every day. If boredom is your complaint, here are some ways to switch up your cardio routine and keep you excited about working out.
Aside from burning calories, exercising will give you muscles, which boosts your metabolism and helps you burn more calories. It'll give your body some definition as well, making weight loss even more noticeable. Exercising can also be a way to feel good about indulging - if you go on a two-hour hike, you'll know you can enjoy dessert after dinner without a side of guilt. Exercising regularly is just as important as eating right, and once you adapt both to your life, losing weight and keeping it off will be a breeze.
Shalee Lost 38 Pounds by Making This 1 Change to Her Diet and Following This Beachbody Program
After having three babies, Shalee Atkinson struggled with postpartum depression and had given up on taking care of herself. She knew that she needed to make a change in her life, not only for herself, but also for her kids. She came across Beachbody's 80-Day Obsession program. She took a leap of faith and followed the workouts and meal plan for 80 days. As a result, she lost 38 pounds and finally has enough energy to play with her children all day long. Continue reading to find out how this Beachbody program transformed Shalee's life.
POPSUGAR: What made you embark on your weight-loss journey?
Shalee Atkinson: My baby girl had just turned 1, and I took a look at myself and realized I weighed more and looked worse than I did right after giving birth to her a year earlier. I had struggled with postpartum depression and anxiety and had completely given up on taking care of myself. I was embarrassed to be seen in public, none of my clothes fit anymore, I couldn't keep up with my three young kids, and I was over it. Right at that time, Beachbody was getting ready to release a new program, 80-Day Obsession. I decided to take a chance and go for it, knowing that I had to make some drastic changes and improve my life, not only for my sake, but also for my family. They deserved a better version of me and I was so ready to give that to them.
PS: How much weight have you lost to date and how long did it take?
SA: I have lost 38 pounds in the last four months.
PS: What do you like about the 80-Day Obsession program?
The timed nutrition was a total game changer.
SA: Every workout was recorded live, so every single day you get something new. This made it fun and easier for me to stick with it. You just feel like you're part of the cast and in on all the inside jokes. It was fun to feel like you were a part of it and be able to get to know the cast. The timed nutrition was a total game changer for me as well. Before I started the program, I was eating out, binge-eating like crazy, and consuming so much sugar and Dr Pepper every single day. I had never done anything like this program, so it was a little overwhelming at first. I had an amazing coach that encouraged me and was a part of an incredible Facebook group full of Beachbody coaches, as well as Autumn Calabrese, the creator of the program. That group was so helpful to me throughout my journey.
PS: What does a typical day of eating look like for you?
SA: 80-Day Obsession uses a container system. Each food group has a specific container. They are different sizes and the purpose of these containers is to teach you the proper portions of each food you should be consuming daily. Based on the meal plan, a typical day of eating looks like this:
- Pre-workout meal: I typically do chopped peppers, kale or spinach, chopped onions, two eggs, and a small whole wheat tortilla. I also take my pre-workout supplement at this time.
- Post-workout shake: I like to blend half of a banana or some frozen strawberries with my chocolate recover supplement.
- Post-workout meal: For this meal, I like to have leftovers from the night before. I rotate between my favorite fixate recipes (from Beachbody): turkey sloppy joes and lemon garlic chicken and asparagus.
- Meal option 1: chocolate Shakeology shake with half of a banana and almond milk.
- Meal option 2: steamed broccoli or zucchini topped with melted cheese and a side of fruit (berries, banana, etc.) is my go-to for this meal.
- Meal option 3: I switch this up every night, but generally I stick to my favorite fixate recipes. A quick and easy recipe I love is ground turkey, chopped veggies (green peppers, onions, mushrooms, etc.), chopped sweet potatoes, olive oil, and sunflower seeds on the side.
PS: Does your diet change on the days you workout?
SA: I work out six days a week with this program. Sundays are my rest days, and the meal plan is slightly different on those days. I still follow timed nutrition - I just get to switch up the order of my meals a little bit.
PS: Do you count calories? Why or why not?
SA: I don't count calories. The meal plan that goes along with 80-Day Obsession has a formula that tells which meal plan you fit into. Each plan tells you exactly how many color-coded containers you should be eating every day and when you should be eating. The containers are a simple way of measuring out your proper portions and counting macros. Timed nutrition helps ensure you are eating the right amounts of protein, carbs, veggies, fruits, and healthy fats, which helps reduce cravings and keep your energy up.
PS: What are some nonscale victories you've experienced?
I have so much more confidence and am no longer ashamed or scared to be seen in public.
SA: I have so much more energy! It feels so good to be able to chase after my babies and play with them all day long. I am able to fit into clothes I never thought I would be able to wear again. I have so much more confidence and am no longer ashamed or scared to be seen in public. My favorite thing about completing this program, though, is being an inspiration to people around me. I have had so many friends and complete strangers reach out to me since sharing my transformation pictures online. Everyone has been so amazing and supportive! It makes me so happy to see my friends making the decision to improve their health and as a result become happier and confident!
PS: What has been the most challenging aspect about your weight-loss journey? How did you overcome it?
SA: My biggest struggle was sticking to the meal plan. I have always been an emotional eater and really struggled with sweets in particular. I did have a few small cheat meals or treats during the program. I was shocked at how awful it made me feel anytime I did, though. That's literally all I ate before, and now I feel terrible after eating any kind of junk food. Looking back at my before pictures and seeing how far I had come really helped me stick with it and stay strong. Another thing that really helped me was the community I was a part of through social media. It was incredible how supportive and encouraging they all were to each other.
PS: What's your next fitness goal?
SA: I am currently completing another round of 80 Day Obsession. I have loved it so much and wanted to push hard for another round to lean out even more and get more defined muscles. I'm considering doing some competitions. That's something I have always wanted to do, but didn't believe in myself or think I would be disciplined enough to do it.
PS: Do you have any advice or tips for people on their own journey?
SA: Don't give up! Your health is so important. Take action now! Avoid putting things off until tomorrow or next week. Getting started is the hardest part. Be sure to recognize all your hard work and give yourself credit. Sometimes your results may seem small, but celebrate them anyway! Avoid weighing yourself every day. Try to measure your success based on how you are feeling or how your clothes are fitting. Be sure to take measurements and progress pictures regularly. It can be hard to see the changes happening in your body sometimes, so it's super helpful to have pictures and measurements to look back on and see just how far you've come!

Working Out and Eating Right but Can't Lose Weight? You May Be Able to Blame It on Your Brain
If you've found diet and exercise ineffective for weight loss, it could just be the way your brain is wired. Turns out the brain has significant power over our weight, metabolism, and appetite - particularly the hypothalamus region, which essentially acts as the mission control center. It influences everything from our body temperature to thirst and hunger. And according to neurologist Dr. Jason McKeown, it's very difficult to override what's already been determined by your mind.
"The brain has a clear view of how much food we need to eat and how much we should weigh, and any attempts that people may make to alter this through diet and exercise alone won't necessarily help you achieve the results you're looking for," Dr. McKeown told POPSUGAR.
Basically, when you eat less, you're signaling to your body that food is scarce. Instead of guiding weight loss, it'll do the exact opposite by increasing your appetite and slowing down your metabolism to conserve fat. A study tested this theory in mice and confirmed that we've been biologically trained to resist dieting. It could be because our ancestors needed to develop this trait to survive famines.
Dr. McKeown also advised against following low-calorie diets for weight loss, saying that they're "almost always destined to fail" at producing long-term results. "Your brain has adjusted to a higher weight having spent years eating certain kinds of foods - perhaps high in sugar and saturated fats - and it becomes more and more difficult to make any major changes by altering only your diet or adding exercise. Promoting and sustaining wellness in your body is just as much mental as it is the result of healthy eating and exercise."
Additionally, because our brain knows how much food we need to eat and how much we should weigh, it also means it's able to override and resist weight-loss attempts. This is why there are people who can eat whatever they want without gaining weight; they're just programmed at a lower body-fat range.
"It's also why when people go on a diet and lose a certain amount of weight, they often plateau and, in the majority of cases, see their weight creep back up again," Dr. McKeown said. "Their brain is unhappy with the new lower weight and will resist the change."
How to Reset Your Brain
Though a healthy diet and exercise are critical for long-term health, a "slow and sustainable approach" to weight loss is most effective. As the CEO of Modius, a technology solution that promotes weight loss through vestibular stimulation, Dr. McKeown has looked to neurotechnology to help others rid excess body weight. Outside of this, he shared that we can retrain our brain by adopting and consistently maintaining healthy lifestyle choices, including reducing sugar and carbs, drinking more water, exercising regularly, and adopting better sleep habits.
"Unfortunately, we tend to think that rapid weight loss is the goal, but actually small but consistent changes over a long period, in my opinion, will lead to better overall health."

Kick Carbs to the Curb With These Snacks
Going low carb can help many people shed a few pounds if done right. Try it yourself with these low-carb snacks; easy to make, many of these are also high in good-for-you nutrients like antioxidants, protein, and fiber.
Why You Should Swap Your Cup of Coffee For Matcha Instead
If you're one of those people who needs three cups of coffee or more to get through your day, you may want to consider making the switch to matcha. Although the beautifully green beverage has only made its way to American cafe menus in recent years, matcha has been a staple of Japanese tea ceremonies for centuries. In addition to having a full-bodied, grassy flavor, this fine powder has more caffeine and 10 times the nutritional value of regular green tea. One teaspoon is all that's required to prepare a cup. But the benefits don't stop there - matcha is packed with antioxidants and offers a steadier caffeine fix than coffee does. Let us break it down for you.
1. Matcha has more antioxidants than other superfoods.
Blueberries, acai berries, and spinach don't even come close to the amount of antioxidants that's found in matcha. Studies show that based on ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) testing, matcha stands at 1,573 units per gram, while blueberries hold of a rating of only 93 units. On top of being grown and harvested differently than regular green tea, matcha is far more concentrated than loose leaf tea, allowing you to enjoy its nutrients in their entirety. In fact, matcha contains 137 times more antioxidants than regular green tea.
2. You won't crash from drinking matcha.
Our body absorbs the caffeine in matcha differently than it does coffee. According to Panatea, coffee increases blood flow and therefore oxygen to our brain and tissues, which results in alertness. But speeding up our systems also comes with those caffeine jitters and then that crash. However, matcha contains an amino acid called L-theanine (known to reduce anxiety and high blood pressure), which combats those side effects while still allowing matcha to provide a stable and longer-lasting focus. And unlike coffee, matcha is both calming and energizing.
3. It aids weight loss.
Green tea contains the powerful antioxidant EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which has been shown to promote weight loss and boost metabolism. A small study has also suggested that matcha's EGCG may boost our ability to burn fat during exercise. Although more research on human subjects is needed, matcha tea provides a rich, subtly sweet flavor without the addition of sugar or cream. Plus, it contains very few calories, making it a healthy option overall.
Matcha also offers perks such as being disease-fighting and detoxifying, but the quality of your matcha can make all the difference - especially when it comes to taste. The best tasting varieties are typically ceremony grade (creamy and sweet) while kitchen grade is at the lower end of the spectrum.
Can You Stop Being High? What to Know in Case You Overdo It on Weed
One of the most common mistakes marijuana newbies make is smoking or consuming more than they can handle. When you're unsure of your limits, the golden rule is always to start low and slow. But with that being said, even the most seasoned stoners can get higher than they intend from time to time. Once you do reach the point of no return, there are steps you can take to make your high less anxiety-inducing and more enjoyable, including taking a shower and making yourself as comfortable as possible. But unfortunately, there isn't much else you can do other than letting time or sleep sober you up.
The next best thing to do is to try counteracting the effects of THC with CBD, which we've found to be effective with certain products. Each person reacts differently to THC (the psychoactive cannabinoid) and CBD (which is nearly nonpsychoactive in recommended doses), so you may want to experiment with different methods of consumption to see what works best for you. For example, although CBD oil and vape pens didn't reverse my high, a 50 mg CBD candy was extremely helpful in bringing me down.
If you don't have any CBD readily available, don't panic! (No, seriously - it'll make your high so much worse.) Be sure to hydrate plenty, get some fresh air, control your breathing, find some personal space, and relax. This too shall pass!

Walking into a MAC store can feel instantly overwhelming for some people. From wall to wall, there are seemingly millions of tiny little black containers filled with magical potions and an impossible number of shades of eye shadows and lip colors. On a recent press trip to MAC Cosmetics's labs in Toronto, Canada, we asked experts - beauty influencers! - what the must-have products are from the brand's line. Some are a little more obvious, like lipstick, but others are far more obscure buys. Read on for seven hot tips on what items you absolutely need to have in your stash.

The FBI Raided $70K Worth of Counterfeit Makeup, and the Ingredients Will Shock You
Beauty trends come and go, but counterfeit makeup will never be in style. While it might seem tempting to buy a knock-off beauty product for less than you'd pay for the real thing, the health hazards are too great to make such a risk. Need a refresher course in why phonies are so bad? Leave it to the LAPD to school you.
According CNN affiliate KABC, the department seized over $700,000 worth of counterfeit cosmetics from 21 locations in LA's Fashion District. What's more staggering than that dollar amount is what was inside the products. According to Capt. Marc Reina, the items were "found to contain bacteria and human waste." He went on to write on Twitter that "the best price is not always the best deal!"
Busted! Major Task Force hits 21 locations in the @LAFashionDist and nets $700,000 in Counterfeit cosmetics found to contain bacteria and human waste. The best price is not always the best deal! #ProtectingOurCommunity pic.twitter.com/gliJ8L2F9F
- Captain Marc Reina (@LAPDMarcReina) April 13, 2018
Brands such as Urban Decay, Nars, MAC, and Kylie Cosmetics were included in the faux lineup. In fact, KABC reported that the investigation began after customers called the brands complaining of bumps and rashes after using the products. When the Anti-Piracy unit learned that all of those callers purchased the products in that specific area, detectives decided to look in to the sketchy retailers.
One of the reasons your favorite products cost so much is because the brands follow specific health standards. That means they pay more to ensure their wears are safe to use. As Detective Rick Ishitani said, bogus companies don't follow such rules. That can lead to the gross ingredients getting in the makeup supply. "Those feces will just basically somehow get mixed into the product they're manufacturing in their garage or in their bathroom - wherever they're manufacturing this stuff," Ishitani said.
Six people were arrested during the raid, which shut down or cited 21 businesses. So remember: stick to the real thing!
This $9 Mascara Is a Bestseller on Amazon . . . It Gives You the Longest, Thickest Lashes Ever
If you're stumped on where to find the perfect mascara, Amazon is a great resource. Thousands of customers leave honest, helpful feedback that will guide your purchasing decision. We're currently obsessing over L'Oréal Paris Double Extend Mascara ($9) because it's the bestselling option the online retailer offers. It currently has over 400 customer reviews and 70 percent of buyers give it five stars. That's pretty impressive in my book.
So why is this particular choice so good? The tube does double duty; it comes with a nourishing base coat and an ultralengthening top coat. The base is loaded with all sorts of nutrients that keep your lashes strong and protected. The mascara you apply afterward can make your hairs look 80 percent longer than they are. Everyone is insanely pleased with the results and touts that the product doesn't flake or smudge.
"I started wearing mascara 16 years ago," one reviewer wrote. "I've used all different brands, including expensive ones from Ulta. This is by far the best mascara I've ever bought. My lashes are so long, and separated! They look so good they almost look fake. I will never buy a different mascara ever again."

Ditch All Those Toxic Ingredients - We Found a Natural Brand Your Skin Will Love
You might be surprised to learn that there are all sorts of toxic chemicals that are legally allowed in many makeup and skincare items in the US. As the awareness of this becomes more prevalent in the beauty industry, more natural and eco-friendly brands are starting to pop up. One of our favorites is Tata Harper. The founder, Harper, was looking for clean skincare products and couldn't find any up to her standards, so she made her own. Now she's a pioneer in the industry. Not only is the line good for your face and the environment, but it's also luxurious and smells delicious. In case you need more convincing, we rounded up a list of our favorites. From acne treatments to cheeks and lip tints, we can't get enough. Keep scrolling to find your new go-to product.
This $6 Liquid Eyeliner Is Selling Out Like Crazy on the Internet - Find Out Why It's So Special
Finding the perfect black eyeliner is like searching for a needle in a haystack. It seems impossible! That's why I was excited to hear about a new option that's going viral. This Maybelline Master Precise All Day Liquid Eyeliner ($6) is the bestselling option you can get on Amazon. It has over 3,000 customer reviews and about 60 percent of buyers give it five stars. So why are so many people buying this pen?
For starters, the fine tip will give you the most precise line ever. You can easily control how thick or thin you'd like to go. It's also waterproof and smudge-proof thanks to its highly pigmented formula, so you'll have your desired look for as long as 12 hours.
Even eyeliner beginners can master this pen because it's so easy to use.
The color is an inky black that dries matte. Even eyeliner beginners can master this pen because it's so easy to use. Messing up is nearly impossible.

Nars Orgasm Lip Balm Is Finally Here to Give You the Pink-Gold Pout of Your Dreams!
Nars Orgasm is the bestselling blush in the US, and the pink-gold shade has become a staple for more Nars beauty products, too. Nars Orgasm Afterglow Lip Balm ($28) is officially one of the newest in the brand's lineup, and it's a silky-smooth balm that'll give lips a pinkish hue with a touch of gold shimmer. As a longtime Orgasm wearer on my cheeks, I can't wait to give my lips some love! POPSUGAR got a sneak peek of the not-yet-launched balm at NYFW earlier this year, and based on swatches of Orgasm Lip Balm, it's clear that it looks gorgeous on everyone.
Like the blush, this adds just enough color without being too in your face; it really enhances the natural color of your lips and lends a radiant glow. The Orgasm Afterglow Lip Balm will join two other new Orgasm products this year: Orgasm Illuminating Loose Powder and Limited Edition Orgasm Blush. The balm is available online as of May 16 and will be sold in Sephora stores starting on May 20. Last year, Nars launched Orgasm Lipstick, which was a little heavier than the balm and provided a noticeable pop of color. Clearly, this cult-favorite shade can do no wrong.
This $11 Eye Shadow Brush Set Is Up 30,000% in Sales on Amazon - Customers Are Obsessed
If you're in the market for some new beauty tools, we have found a major deal for you. This Real Perfection Eye Makeup Brush Set ($11) on Amazon is currently up a whopping 30,000 percent in sales, and 76 percent of customers who have reviewed the product give it five stars.

There is also a variety of brushes for everything you need from blending out eye shadow to applying eyeliner. There's even an eyebrow spool. Christina Aguilera Took Us Down Music Video Memory Lane, and the Nostalgia Is SO Real
If you're in the mood to go down a rabbit hole of Christina Aguilera's music videos through the years, you've come to the right place. Christina sat down with W magazine to talk through her fashion and beauty looks from videos throughout her career, from the iconic "Genie in a Bottle" of 1999 (her first video ever!) to the stripped-down "Beautiful" video of 2002.
"The hair at that point in my life might have weighed more than I did," she laughed as she reminisced on her over-the-top wardrobe for "Lady Marmalade." Honestly, it's a treasure we don't really deserve, and it'll have you laughing about Abercrombie pants and craving an Xtina binge-listening session at the same time. Watch the pop icon describe her many styles in her own words above.

Suddenly your travel excitement is put on pause, and visions of cramped legs, a stiff neck, and the awkward armrest dance fill your mind. And let's be real - flying in seat 36B is never going to be an incredible experience, but there are steps you can take to make the middle row a little more pleasant. With the help of travel experts, here are eight ways to make life in the middle seat totally doable.
- Put all of your bags overhead. You're going to feel a bit cramped in the middle seat no matter what, so having as much space available at your feet is crucial. Alanna Smith with TravelPirates recommends putting everything you'll need once airborne (i.e., headphones, phone, charger, etc.) in a small tote bag so you can maximize your foot space.
- Pack the right equipment. Perhaps the most enjoyable way to spend your time in the middle seat is to sleep. Be sure to bring all the essentials to help you get some shut-eye. Ear plugs, noise-canceling headphones, comfortable clothing, and the right travel pillow will help. Cabeau recently released the new Evolution S3, which straps to the seat wings to prevent your head from falling forward. Stiff neck, be gone!
- Prep your body. Dr. Eric Chang, plastic surgeon with The Institute of Advanced Reconstruction, advises travelers, "The day before you take off and the day of flight, be sure to avoid high-sodium foods as much as possible to keep swelling at bay. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and caffeine (which act as diuretics and cause frequent trips to the bathroom), and be sure to walk around on long flights to help circulation."
- Get active with gentle aerobic exercise before and after your flight. "An easy walk around the block with a few deep-breathing exercises or a relaxing swim or bike ride are great ways to keep the blood flowing and loosen up any tight muscles or joints," recommends Brad Walker, director of education at StretchLab.
- Focus on your breathing. Walker also advocates breathing exercises to help with any discomfort. "Take deep breaths regularly. Start by taking a big breath in to fill up your lungs. Hold it five to 10 seconds, and then exhale by pushing all that air out of your lungs. Do that four or five times every hour and you'll keep that vital oxygen flowing through your entire body."
- Load up on entertainment. If you're unable to catch some zzz's (not all of us were born with the sweet, sweet ability to easy sleep on planes), then be prepared with an activity to keep your mind occupied. It's a great opportunity to get a little work done, read a book, or binge-watch your favorite shows with no remorse. Smith recommends having one or two shows on deck. "Have you recently discovered a binge-worthy series on Netflix? Download some episodes to your preferred device and get lost in the show. It will help you forget your middle seat, and the time will pass quickly."
- Make friends with your neighbors. "You never know how far a small amount of kindness will get you, especially when you need to ask to go to the restroom for the third time or you find yourself in a mini battle over the armrests," offers Mable Tang, accounts director for Thai Airways. Alex Dalton of Travel Experts agrees, saying, "Some of the best middle seat adventures I've had are when I had a great conversation to whisk the time away."
- But politely stand up for yourself. It's an unspoken courtesy of flying - give up the armrests for the person in the middle. "Airline etiquette dictates that the middle seat gets both armrests, so don't be afraid to calmly address the issue with your fellow travelers," adds Tang.

5 Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoos That Will Clarify Your Hair in 1 Use
Achieving and keeping clean hair (as in the lightweight and bouncy kind you can't stop running your hands through) isn't always an easy feat, but experts say the secret to gunk-free (add to that nourished and strong) strands could be right in your kitchen cabinet.
"Apple cider vinegar can act as a natural clarifier for buildup or an oily scalp. It's great to use an alternative to harsh shampoos that can strip your hair from natural oils. It also leaves hair with incredible shine," says Liana Zingarino, a hairstylist at the Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in New York.
This is especially true in the days of dry shampoo and lived-in hair. "The cider works to remove residue from all of those styling products and impurities to make your hair feel squeaky clean," explains Giovanni Vaccaro, creative director at Glamsquad.
Read on for five shampoos and rinses that will bring your hair back to its natural - and perhaps shiniest - state.
We're Currently Obsessing Over Frank Body's New Lip Gloss and Scrub
Instagram-famous Australian brand Frank Body won our hearts with its, well, rather frank approach to consumerism. The brand treats itself as a person, which is probably why devoted fans and newfound friends feel like Frank has their best interests at heart. Five years ago, the brand launched a coffee body scrub before everyone else decided to jump on the bandwagon, and it was free of ingredients that have no business being in your body care. With social success and huge sales, it expanded into skin care and a lip range including tinted balms and exfoliating lip scrubs. This year, Frank Body added a new addition to the scrub family - the Espress-O Scrub Body Polish ($22) - that is easy to travel with, thanks to its new consistency and packaging. Last year, the Frank Body Shimmer Scrub was born, and it actually leaves your skin highlighted and shimmery after exfoliating in the shower.
It shouldn't be a surprise that Frank Body is bringing that glorious body shimmer to your lips, with the new Shimmer Lip Scrub ($15) and Shimmer Lip Gloss ($12)! Both launches are different from other products in the range. The base of the scrub is sugar and salt, made with citrus extract for the scent and grapeseed oil and vitamin E to add a subtle slip to the lips. (It's kind of like what you'd rim a margarita with, now that we think about it.) The shimmer comes from iridescent "glow dust," as the brand is calling it, and much like the body scrub, the payoff after removing the scrub itself is like a highlighter for your lips.
The gloss is different from the lip tints or lip balms in that it's glossy and has a high-shine effect. The shimmer is subtle and still noticeable when catching the light. In our experience, the scrub actually gives more of a glow than the actual gloss does! It should be noted that the glossy ingredient in the gloss is lanolin - sorry, vegan friends.
You can get both new launches starting today via Frank Body's new loyalty program, Hotel Pink. Members will get the opportunity to purchase product before it launches, have first dibs during flash sales, and get to test new products. Don't worry - it's free to join! Keep reading to see more photos of the products.
A Breakdown of All the Products a Beauty Editor Travels With
I don't know if it's harder to pack my clothes or my makeup when I go on vacation. Even getting ready for work at the gym in the morning feels like a challenge; I inevitably end up leaving the lip color I want to wear at home. When I travel, I like to go carry-on only, which means my makeup bag can't be too large or too heavy. Talk about a challenge. After a lot of flights and multiple overstuffed cosmetic cases, these are my picks for on-the-go beauty. Your suitcase will thank you.
I Got Cate Blanchett's Infamous "Penis Facial" - and It's Not What You Think
Image Source: Getty / Pascal Le Segretain
I'll do a lot of things to get a complexion that's as clear as Cate Blanchett's. I'm a fairly adventurous lady, so I'll subject my skin to needles, prodding, serums, or anything else the 49-year-old recommends. But I must admit even I took pause when I read this POPSUGAR headline: "Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock Got 'Penis Facials,' and We're as Confused as You Are." I wasn't really confused - a quick 4 a.m. search of PornHub proves that penis facials are totally a thing - I just didn't want to resort to such behavior for vanity's sake. (Though if you choose to indulge, more power to ya!) Luckily, Cate's ritual isn't what it sounds like.
The actress and a slew of other celebrities hit up the British-born facialist Georgia Louise, who owns a very chic New York City salon. She offers a Hollywood EGF Facial, and that acronym stands for epidermal growth factor. As Cate told Vogue Australia, "It smells a bit like sperm because of an enzyme, so Sandy [Sandra Bullock] refers to it as the penis facial."
First off, I volunteer to play third wheel on Cate's girl dates with Sandra. Second, Cate's juicy quote is a wee bit misleading. The ingredient isn't sperm. As the friendly folks at Georgia Louise were quick to clarify in a press release, "EGF, which is FDA-approved, is derived from the progenitor cells of the human fibroblast taken from Korean newborn baby foreskin - which helps to generate collagen and elastin."
After cleansing my skin and applying the exfoliating peel, it was penis o'clock.
How do you get said foreskin? It's taken from real, live Korean babies during circumcision (mazel!). Those stem cells are then harvested and multiplied through a machine called a centrifuge. Louise always likes to stress that the cells that end up in your skin aren't the OG infant ones but instead are clones made in a lab. A mixture of those stem cells and peptides goes into a microneedling wand that zaps the concoction into your skin, stimulates collagen production, and makes you look like Cate. I had to try for myself.

Louise's team was kind enough to squeeze me into a 9:30 a.m. appointment at the Upper East Side location. I was able to try this $650 treatment for the sake of journalism, and it began by meeting my facialist, a lovely Brit named Sarah Smith. She began by asking me if I had used retinol the night before - and I hadn't, because I am a responsible nugget. You're not supposed to use any products that contain this vitamin before the facial, as it can counteract with the TCA chemical peel that's used in this process. So fans of Sunday Riley's Luna, or any other trendy retinol cream, take note - you should put down product in the week leading up this treatment.
After cleansing my skin and applying the exfoliating peel, it was penis o'clock. I'd never microneedled before, but I'd read Kirbie Johnson's review of the procedure, which included a lot of blood and succeeded in scaring the sh*t out of me. The only thing I remember from AP Euro was what Queen Victoria supposedly told her nervous daughter on her wedding night: "Just lie on your back and think of England." So I did the same, thinking of my English rose Cate as the dick needles approached my face.
Queen Victoria told her nervous daughter on her wedding night, "Just lie on your back and think of England." So I did the same as the dick needles approached my face.
What followed was an experience I would never describe as "pleasant" but wasn't totally terrible, either. I felt some minor pricking from the device as Sarah dotted my entire face and neck with it. I felt some uncomfortable ticking around my décolletage, and it hurt around bonier parts of my face like my forehead, but nothing felt excruciating. Sarah told me that I had an impressive "tolerance" for microneedling, which made me very happy because it is a competition. One thing to note is that I'm prone to hormonal acne flare-ups on my left cheek, so Sarah stayed away from that area to prevent scarring.
After the poking, Sarah applied a gooey, soothing mask to my face, which felt like heaven over the chapped parts of my skin. Just when I thought the questionable part of the procedure (stabbing baby peen into my pores) was over, Sarah zipped a microcurrent through the mask. This weirdly relaxing process supposedly speeds up the healing process, but IMO, the true bonus is it makes you feel like a robot taking some "me time."
With that, I'd popped my penis facial virginity and was heading back to my office after playing celebrity for an hour. Sarah let me know that my face would be red for at least a day and instructed me to not wear any makeup for 24 hours, which sort of sucked because of the first part of this sentence. As you can see in the unfiltered, makeup-free (if you don't count my three-day-old eyeliner) photo below, there was a bit of peeling around my forehead, and my cystic acne came up to the surface.
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Alaina Demopoulos
All I did that night was cleanse, and I woke up with substantially less redness. Just in time for a weekend trip to Vegas, my face had a soft flush, my pores were practically invisible, and I could fool the world into thinking my diet isn't just an endless rotation of string cheese and German beer.
If you can't burn one month's rent on an hour-long treatment, Bioeffect's EGF Serum ($155) contains the same skin-plumping ingredient - with a slight catch. It's a vegan product that's made from plants, not baby clones. Maybe that takes away a bit of the fun, but all that fun will come right back when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror!

Wear These Fingerless Gloves During Your Gel Mani to Protect Against Harmful UV Lamps
I have few vices: I don't smoke, I keep my drinking to two margaritas tops at happy hour, and I stay away from (most) drugs. My one bad habit? Gel manicures, which beauty girls love because they're long-lasting, but some doctors advise against due to a plethora of health challenges. One of the scarier aspects of gels? Certain salons ask you to stick your fingers underneath a UV lamp to help seal and dry your new polish. (Others go for less harmful LED lights.)
Although the chance of developing a deadly cancer from curing lamps is low, it's still not an ideal scenario. One brand has found what it suggests to be a solution - fingerless gloves!
ManiGlovz ($25) was founded by Kim Motola, a self-professed "sunscreen fanatic" who felt uncomfortably hot during one session under a UV lamp. In response, she spent months researching the effects of lamps on skin and developed the UV 50+ material that makes up her gloves, which the company says protects against 98 percent of all UV rays.
Plus, each one comes in funky patterns such as pop art lips, mermaid's tail green, and a galactic space print. There's even a standard black for all you minimalists out there. Read on to see these accessories in action.
Don't Travel Overseas With the Wrong Hair Dryer - Shop These 7 Dual-Voltage Picks
If you're traveling abroad, there are so many important things to think about, from finding the perfect camera to making sure you have the right converter for power outlets. One thing we often overlook is our hair tools. In America, we use about 110 or 120 volts for our electricity, and in Europe, the volts used are twice as high, from 220 to 240. So if you try to use your US-made dryer overseas, it will most likely result in you blowing a fuse and often ruining your dryer.
To prevent this, many brands are now making travel-friendly dryers that come with dual-voltage options. These choices feature a button on them that you can simply switch back and fourth to change the amount of electricity they need. Take a look at our top picks.
6 Key Mistakes You Might Be Making With Concealer
It's not just enough to spend five minutes a day applying your makeup: you need to make sure you have the right products, tools, and techniques to make the most of your look. While concealer might seem simple, there's actually more to it than you think. When it comes to finding the perfect concealer for your skin and complexion, it's all about trial and error to see what works and what doesn't. You should also visit a makeup artist for advice if you're struggling to pick your favorite. Here are the worst mistakes you could be making when putting on concealer in the morning.

Exclusive: We Have a Lit-uation - Maybelline's Expanded Highlighter Range Is on FIRE!
Some news that just may be the high-light of your day: Maybelline is expanding its mega-popular Master Chrome Metallic luminizer range, and we've got all the details! The drugstore beauty brand launched the line last Fall, which currently includes trendy, icy options such as rose gold, iridescent lavender, and white opal. Now, Maybelline is taking a sharp turn in a warmer direction with the launch of its two luminizers, a bronze-gold and deep peach.
We first got an inkling that these highlighters were coming back in early April, when the brand teased swatches that had many comparing the shade to Fenty's famed Trophy Wife - but at a much more modest price tag of just $10.
Both the dark gold and punchy watermelon shades are similar to OG MasterChrome options - the formula is blendable, slides on like butter, and stays put once applied. No streaks here! Even I, a dyed-in-the-wool cream highlighter gal, admit that I want to cop the samples Maybelline sent over.
Read on to see the reflective swatches in action - then make it your mission to pick one of these up from your drugstore when they roll out in June.
Thandie Newton's Cannes Dress Paid a Powerful Tribute to the Black Male Star Wars Characters
All eyes were on Thandie Newton and her custom Vivienne Westwood gown while she walked the Cannes red carpet at the Solo: A Star Wars Story premiere on May 15. At first glance, the dress appears simply to be an elegant off-the-shoulder gold gown, but look closer and you'll notice action figure illustrations of the black male Star Wars characters, a significant statement for both the actress and the franchise.
Thandie's stylist, Erin Walsh, posted a sketch of the breathtaking dress on Instagram and revealed the inspiration behind it. "Thandie had the brilliant idea to make a dress covered in a print with photos of iconic black Star Wars characters!" Erin wrote in the caption. "She wanted to celebrate her role in the iconic history of the franchise!"
Thandie is the first black woman to have a leading role on screen in a Star Wars movie, which is definitely a part worth celebrating! Her gown is a nod to the black characters who came before hers - like Finn, Saw Gerrera, Mace Windu, Captain Panaka, and Lando Calrissian - and symbolizes a hopeful future for further diversity in the franchise with her character Val.
LaCroix Swimsuits Exist, So Take a Dip Dressed Like Your Favorite Sparkling Water
Nowadays it seems like almost everyone loves LaCroix . . . but do you really love LaCroix? Like, would you get a LaCroix-printed swimsuit? This is not a rhetorical question; I'm honestly asking because these one-piece suits from Public Space actually exist. You can sip your favorite refreshing flavor poolside while wearing it at the same time. This is 2018, you guys.
Can I make a confession? I'm a sparkling-water novice (I know, I know), but I'm absolutely obsessed with these suits. The bright colors, high cut, and low back give these one-pieces an '80s vibe that even a Pamplemousse poser like myself can love. This Unspoken Rule About Heels Is the Reason Kristen Stewart Ditched Her Shoes at Cannes
Source: Getty / Loic Venance
Kristen Stewart made headlines at the Cannes Film Festival this week for taking her shoes off on the red carpet. And if you look back into the archives, you'll realize she did almost the same thing in 2016 when she swapped her black Christian Louboutins for blue Vans sneakers. Her decision is not just about comfort - it's about making a statement against the Cannes policy that requires women to wear high heels. Although the policy is more of an unspoken rule and isn't etched in stone like other parts of the Cannes dress code, it's become clear that women wearing heels are more welcome than those wearing flats.
In 2015, several women were reportedly denied access to the Carol premiere for wearing flats. Emily Blunt spoke out at the time, saying, "We shouldn't wear high heels. That's just my point of view - I love Converse sneakers. It's very disappointing." Kristen Stewart echoed that sentiment and said, "It has become really obvious that if [a man and I] were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, 'Excuse me, young lady, you're not wearing heels. You cannot come in.' Then [I'm going to say], 'Neither is my friend. Does he have to wear heels?'" Julia Roberts also got in on the action when she ditched her shoes to run up the stairs, although that could've been for pure comfort.

While high heels may be a welcome accessory for many women as they wear elaborate gowns - some of the best fashion can be found on the Cannes red carpet - others may want to wear flats for a number of reasons, including medical requirements.
Never Mind the Film Festival, All the Fashion at Cannes Is at the Airport
The Cannes Film Festival is awash with glamorous gowns once again, and the likes of Cate Blanchett and Julianne Moore are already creating classic moments in their timeless outfits. But let's rewind for a minute, because the fashion didn't start on the red carpet. In fact, Hollywood's sartorially blessed starlets actually touched down in seriously enviable airport style. From Kendall Jenner in snakeskin boots to Chloë Sevigny's beret, read on for the best travel style in Cannes.
Kate Middleton Has Her Pick of All These Royal Tiaras
While the Crown Jewels are on display at the Tower of London, some of the most beautiful and blinging royal headwear is very much kept under lock and key. It means that we have to wait for assorted state occasions to catch a rare glimpse of these historic pieces, but when we do, it's worth the wait! They're made up of rubies, sapphires, emeralds, thousands of diamonds, smuggled pearls, and aquamarines the size of perfume bottles, so take a peek at the tiaras inside the royal vaults . . .
The Ultimate Guide to Denim Shorts by Body Type
While you might have a drawer full of denim cutoffs, there's one pair that's better than all the rest. They lift your booty and emphasize your curves, and whenever you wear them, the compliments roll in. Why? These cutoffs were made for your body type, even if you slashed and distressed them yourself.
But if you're not sure what style of shorts should be your go-to, we've got the answer. Whether you're long and lean, petite with toned legs, or curvy, there's a silhouette that will flatter your butt, make for the best foundation to your outfit, and ultimately give you a major confidence boost. And when it comes to finding the right jeans, that's what's most important. Read on for the basics, or jump ahead to your body type.
Blake Lively May Be Walking the Red Carpet With Ryan Reynolds, but All Eyes Are on Her Heels
From the Met Gala to a movie premiere, find yourself a fashion icon who can do both. Blake Lively stepped out a week after the 2018 Met Gala to support her husband, Ryan Reynolds, at the Deadpool 2 premiere on May 14. She took the film's color palette to heart and wore a strapless Brandon Maxwell sequined dress with a deep red sash tied high on her waist. She paired the gorgeous dress with Ofira Jewels dangling earrings, a Lorraine Schwartz bracelet and ring, a "Chill Beats/Party Mix" clutch, and Christian Louboutin strappy sandals with a transparent PVC heel. Keep scrolling to see even more angles of Blake's outfit and shop the exact pair of heels she wore on the red carpet. Careful . . . they'll take your breath away.
