Latino, Latina, or Latinx? Here's How to Use These Terms
Illustration by Fabiola Lara | Fabiolita.com
If you've been online, you've probably seen the term "Latinx" being tossed around on Twitter, Instagram, and online forums. If you're not entirely sure what "Latino," "Latina," or "Latinx" means - or why all these terms exist - I'm here to set things straight for you.
"Latino" and "Latina" are terms used to describe a man or woman who is culturally or ethnically from Latin America. Generally, the countries classified as part of Latin America are those in Mexico, Central America, South America, and parts of the Caribbean. In Spanish, you use the "-o" or "-a" ending on nouns or adjectives depending on if you're using a masculine or feminine pronoun.
For example:
Male - "He is Latino" or "El es Latino."
Female - "She is Latina" or "Ella es Latina."
As you can see, the Spanish language is heavily gendered by design, so the term "Latinx" has become increasingly popular as a gender-neutral term for those who don't subscribe to the gender binary. Latinx can be used for those who identify as male, female, or anywhere along the gender spectrum. Consider it a modern-day replacement that makes all our lives a bit simpler, and I personally encourage everyone to use this widely-accepted term whenever possible as a way to slowly dismantle the patriarchy.
For example:
Gender-inclusive - "They are Latinx."
Beyond Latinx, it has become very popular to replace masculine "o's" and feminine "a's" in the Spanish language with a gender-neutral "x" for the same aforementioned reason. This is convenient for common greetings in Spanish since usually you would be forced to translate "hey guys" or "hey girls" to "hola chicos" or "hola chicas," but now you have the option of using the inclusive "hola chicxs" to bundle it all together. The rise of the "-x" allows everyone to save themselves the trouble of using gendered -and even sexist- language while adapting it to fit our needs.
For example:
Gender-inclusive - "They are a Latinx band" or "Ellxs son un grupo Latinx".
Now don't get overwhelmed with all these terms, and just remember that "Latino," "Latina," and "Latinx" all refer to someone or people of Latin American origin, while "Latinx" is a gender-inclusive and intersectional upgrade to the same term.

Sebastian Yatra Posted a Video Singing a Shawn Mendes Song, and Now I Feel Incredibly Relaxed
Image Source: Getty / Gladys Vega
Sebastian Yatra is a little blessing we didn't know we had. Don't get me wrong, ever since he came into the music scene, he's been making waves and his efforts have been duly noted, but it wasn't until this past weekend when I came across a new video he had posted on Instagram singing Shawn Mendes' song "Never Be Alone" that I found myself extremely soothed by his voice.
I obviously knew he could sing, but maybe it was the fact that this was such a spontaneous performance in his backyard - no production, no crew, just him and his guitar - that changed my perspective. It felt so intimate, like he was singing to me and only me. It was captivating, and for that minute and a half, I felt like everything was going to be OK.
"I promise that one day I'll be around / I'll keep you safe / I'll keep you sound," Yatra sang, as he continued to hypnotize me with his voice. "Right now it's pretty crazy / And I don't know how to stop / Or slow it down," he continued.
It was definitely a sound of relief during these times, and a way for Yatra to encourage his followers to stay home and follow protocol to avoid spreading COVID-19, also known as the novel Coronavirus. He's joined several other Latin artists who are doing the same and promoting it on social media with the hashtag #YoMeQuedoEnCasa (I'm staying home).
Yatra had said in a previous video that while he thankfully feels great, he was going to self-isolate at home with his family to take precautions. He said he would take the time to "make music and get some rest." While he's doing that, he's also staying connected with his fans by sharing videos that prove to be very relaxing and peaceful.
After the success of his cover of "Never Be Alone," which had over 1.2 million views in only two days, Yatra posted a stripped-down version (literally) of his song "No Hay Nadie Mas," which had fans thanking him in the comments for making them feel good.

Camila Cabello Opens Up About Meditation For Anxiety: "It’s Making Me a Better Human"
Sometimes a deep breath can do a lot more for your mental health than you might expect. In an Instagram post on Monday, Camila Cabello opened up about her personal struggles with anxiety and stress, citing meditation as a point of relief that better helps her to be at one with herself and the world around her. "Meditation has changed my life in the last few months," Cabello wrote. "I didn't share this with you guys at the time because honestly I was just trying to be okay, but I was experiencing severe anxiety. It was meditation - it was practicing every single day multiple times a day that has been healing me, and, more than just helping me manage strong emotions like anxiety and stress, it's making me a better human."
"May you be healthy. May you be safe. May you be free from illness. May you be well."
Cabello went on to point out the benefits of meditation, including that it makes her feel closer to nature and more in tune with her own emotions and those of people around her. "Not only does it help in times like this with stress and anxiety, meditation is the practice of strengthening habits like empathy, love, and compassion - making you feel more connected to not only everybody around you, but living beings in general like animals, plants, and the earth, which is a living being, itself."
Given the coronavirus outbreak, Cabello urged those suffering more stress and anxiety than usual to take into consideration their own well-being and that of those around them, particularly those highly susceptible to the virus. "In times like these, especially as young people, even if we are healthy, it's important to practice compassion and help others that could be suffering. We are in this together, let's not be indifferent to others [sic] risk. It's our responsibility to do whatever it takes to keep everyone safe. Empathy to others' reality and solidarity could make the difference in hard moments like this. We can't think that we will be unaffected because we feel young and healthy. We have parents, grandparents, friends, and neighbors, and we don't want to be a part of the problem when we could be part of the solution."
Cabello suggested her followers take the time to meditate by sitting up straight and feeling "gravity grounding your body to the earth's surface and supporting you." Next, she recommended taking three deep breaths and keeping track of each inhale and exhale until your mind has stilled. "Once your mind has stilled. Picture every human in the world right now, elders, people that have respiratory problems and are vulnerable, picture the people that are vulnerable, picture their families, and say 'May you be healthy. May you be safe. May you be free from illness. May you be well.' Repeat until you really feel it in your heart - love you guys, please stay safe!"
Lance Bass and His Husband Michael Lost Their Baby Boy at 8 Weeks After 9 IVF Attempts
Lance Bass and his husband Michael Turchin are dealing with a heartbreaking loss after hoping to welcome a child via surrogacy. The former *NSYNC singer recently told Entertainment Tonight their baby boy (and ninth IVF attempt) did not make it past eight weeks.
Fortunately, he's found solace with families in similar positions. "I didn't even know that as we were going through this, but we've met so many great couples who have the same story. So, you do feel a lot of support knowing other people have gone through it."
Like many expecting parents, Bass admitted it's hard not to get your hopes up in the early stages of pregnancy. "You try to trick yourself into not getting excited because you know anything can happen at any time, especially in those first few weeks when there's a huge possibility that the [embryos] won't stick," Lance said. "You keep telling yourself that and trying not to get your hopes up, but you're always going to have those thoughts in the back of your brain where you're already planning out their lives. Especially once you know the sex - you can't help but fast-forward over their entire lives and imagine who they're going to be like, who they might marry and all kinds of stuff."
"That's the thing that sucks - you can't help yourself from thinking those thoughts and having this perfect world scenario in your mind," Lance continued. "Getting over that has been hard. It's like all these hopes and dreams I had won't be happening this time. But everything happens for a reason and when it needs to happen, it'll have to happen."
Despite this sad loss, Lance still has hope for a future family with Michael. "It's been a very long process, years in the making," he admitted. "There have been a lot of ups and downs . . . way more downs than ups."
"Nine did not work, so now we're onto 10 and hopefully the next time will work," he continued. "I'm trying not to worry about it. Of course, in a perfect world I would love to have my own kids. But if it's not meant in the cards, then it's not meant in the cards and there are plenty of kids who need adopting. So, I'm not opposed to going right ahead and adopting if this fails next time."

This 15-Second Stretch Can Help You Stop Slouching While You're Working From Home
@cascade.chiro Everyone needs this. ##posturecheck ##posture ##health ##healthy ##piday
If you've never worked from home before, the transition can be challenging. Unless you have a comfortable home office (or even better, a standing desk), you may find yourself slouching over your computer from your couch or bed, which can cause neck, shoulder, and back pain. One thing that can help? Good old fashioned stretching. Oregon-based chiropractor Chris Cooper, who goes by @cascade.chiro on TikTok, shared a video with a very simple 15-second stretch to help improve your posture, no matter your circumstances.
While sitting down, hold your palms out in front of you and turn them face up. Swing your arms out to your sides; roll your shoulders back so your shoulder blades are pressed together, then drop them as you continue squeezing. Pull your head back so you feel like you're giving yourself a double chin, and hold this position for 15 seconds.
Feel that?
You should be able to feel your muscles contracting, and when you release, you'll feel some of the tension fall away. If you find yourself fighting tension in other muscle groups, take some time to stretch everything out - these exercises can help.

Mariah Carey and Her Kids Owned St. Patrick's Day With Their Festive Flip the Switch Video
It doesn't have to be Christmas for Mariah Carey to break out the festive apparel, and 8-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan were right alongside her as she filmed TikTok's Flip the Switch challenge in honor of St. Patrick's Day. In a video shared on both her TikTok and Instagram accounts on Tuesday, the trio along with makeup artist Kristofer Buckle, boyfriend Bryan Tanaka, and two dogs are shown in front of a vanity as a light switch goes off halfway through and flips back on to reveal everyone in the room decked out in bright green apparel. Mariah goes from a black ensemble into a green bobbed wig and matching earrings. The rest of her crew (yes, including the dogs) also change into glittery green hats and cover themselves in shamrocks of all shapes and sizes. Of course, we'd expect nothing less from the queen of Christmas and all things festive.
40 Conversation Starters That Make Mingling Fun
We've all found ourselves in awkward situations where we'd rather scroll mindlessly on our phone than make the effort of mingling. But it doesn't have to be anxiety-inducing to break the ice with people you've never met before. Sure, a cocktail can help, but so does a solid conversation starter. Try one of these 40 questions to get people chatting next time you're stuck at a work event or don't know anyone at a party.
- Where did you grow up? This is a great icebreaker that gets someone talking about the past, which often puts others at ease.
- Do you have any pets? People love their pets, and inquiring about them encourages further conversation. And, even if the person you're chatting with doesn't have any, it's still a good start.
- What's your favorite book? Instead of asking what people are reading right now, which can be a bit too intimate, asking about a book they love can create a mutual connection.
- What's the first thing you do after work? Do you kick off your shoes? Hit the gym? Asking how people relax makes them feel relaxed.
- What's your dream job? Even at a corporate gathering, inquiring about someone's dream job is a fun way to get a conversation started.
- If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Not everyone gets to travel tons, making this a fun question for anyone.
- What countries have you traveled to? Even if you haven't traveled the world, asking if others have encourages someone to share memories.
- Do you like to cook? Asking about favorite dishes and culinary adventures sparks delicious dishing.
- What's your favorite food? Everyone eats, making this an icebreaker that works anywhere, anytime.
- What's your favorite drink? A wonderfully basic question, asking about best-loved beverages works at any gathering.
- Do you have a favorite local restaurant? This is a great conversation to get people talking about their favorite local hangouts, which puts everyone at ease.
- What's your favorite movie? You can find out a lot about a person when you chat about a favorite movie. Follow it up with specific questions, such as scene stealers and actors in the flick.
- What movie are you dying to see? Jump in with a question that involves everyone and will get a group chatting over new releases.
- What are you watching on TV? This is another question that won't offend and is open-ended, encouraging even the supershy to start chatting.
- What's the last concert you went to? Another easygoing question for one-on-one conversation or for jumping into a group conversation. And it's a fun way to find out what kinds of music your new friends listen to.
- What's the craziest thing you've ever done? For those who are ready to make a bold first impression, this is a question that gets attention and can lead to fun conversation.
- If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could have only one item, what would it be? Yes, a classic one-liner, but this convo starter always gets a good answer.
- What's your favorite season? Here's a question that works well with the "it's always easy to talk about the weather" concept. Follow up by asking about the current weather conditions, and you have a conversation.
- Do you speak any other languages? Asking a semipersonal question encourages others to share information about themselves without feeling guarded.
- Do you have anything fun planned for the weekend? Make chatting easy by asking about future plans - without setting off a stalker vibe. Keep it light and share your plans too.
- Where's your favorite place to hang out in town? Here is another fun way to start a conversation about your community without being threatening. And it opens discussion to favorite restaurants, bars, and shops.
- I like your shirt! Where did you get it? A genuine compliment makes anyone smile.
- I can't place this song - do you know it? Hey, even if you know the tune, asking someone else about the music playing is a simple start.
- How long have you been at your job? Even at a corporate event, asking others about their job titles, roles, and how long they have been at the company breaks the ice.
- Tell me about something that made you laugh this week. Everyone loves a good laugh! Asking about something that brought on a chuckle makes anyone smile.
- If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it? A bit more direct, but asking a specific question that requires thought can really make an impression.
- How are you today? Sure, this is a no-brainer question, but it gets people talking.
- Where is the best place you have ever visited? Taking a vacation is always wonderful. Asking someone new about a favorite destination is always an easy way to start talking.
- Did you hear about (something trending in the news)? Pick something pretty generic, remembering to stay away from politics and religion, and the conversation will get rolling.
- So, what's your story? OK, this one is borderline pick-up line, but it's also a direct approach for chatting.
- This place is awesome! Have you been here before? Complimenting the venue is a positive way to chat with others.
