"We're Being Confronted": Energy Healer Millana Snow on Racism in Wellness

Millana Snow has been in the wellness world for ten years, which means she's seen a lot. She's experienced a lot. And one thing she knows: the lack of diversity in fitness has been an issue for a long time.

"When the Black Lives Matter movement really got the attention that it needed to have, people came to me because they identified me as a Black woman in the space of healing," said Snow, an energy healer and the founder of Wellness Official. "But I have been helping people in this way for ten years."

It was frustrating, Snow told POPSUGAR. She had been sharing her message and her skills for a long time, and yet, it seemed like they weren't valid or valued "until there was social pressure for people to align themselves with people that looked like me." Snow is Black, Latina, and white, and she does what she does "independent of what physical form I come in," she explained. "It was like I was getting attention because of the way that I looked as a Black woman, instead of just getting the respect as a person who has been doing the work for a long time and has a lot to share."

"It's the unseen, unconscious pattern of taking from those that you think that you can benefit from, because you perceive them to be less than you."

In her years in wellness, Snow has experienced the effects of racism herself, something she's only recently shared publicly. In her previous business, Snow had a difficult experience with her business partners, one she described as bullying and slanderous. "It just so happened that these were two white women," she said. At first, she didn't realize it had anything to do with race. The wake-up call came when she saw Get Out, the groundbreaking Jordan Peele movie that personified the horrors of racism and modern colonization.

"In my own way, symbolically, that was actually my experience," Snow explained. "There was a deeper implication, because of this pattern in history of what colonizing actually is. It doesn't mean that it's just white people that do that. It's the unseen, unconscious pattern of taking from those that you think that you can benefit from, because you perceive them to be less than you." She points out that it's not just Black people who experience this either. "Frankly, it's happening to people of every gender, race, cultural background."

Snow has also experienced what she called the "other side" of racism in wellness. When she first started out in wellness, she got a lot of attention. "I was getting a lot of press," she said. "I'm a model. I did a lot of TV and fashion. I'm a light-skinned woman." She realized, though, that she was being tokenized. "When they needed someone of color, I was the one that was OK to put in that role." It was that experience of that informed the way she runs Wellness Official: instead of being the token Black voice, she said, "I can be the reason why everyone gets a seat at the table."

At the end of the day, Snow said, "we're being confronted": about systemic racism and our own shortcomings, in wellness and in every sphere. But she put it bluntly: "If we don't actually start caring and putting a priority on the sh*t that really matters, we're going to go to a very dark place that will be very hard to get out of."

"Let's do the work first," Snow said. "Then you'll see that everything else just feels better."

7 of the Worst Things to Happen on The Boys Season 1 - And They’re All Homelander's Fault

When you hear the word "superhero," you envision someone inherently good that will do anything to stop an evildoer. At the beginning of the very first episode of The Boys, Homelander (played by the simultaneously charming and terrifying Antony Starr) seems like he might be the only "good guy" in The Seven. By the end of that episode, however, we see he's actually the worst of them all. Whether he's shooting down planes or threatening fellow team members, Homelander doesn't give a f*ck so long as no one tarnishes his public image. As a refresher for season two, we've ranked the worst things Homelander does, from offensive to downright evil, throughout season one.

Kendall Jenner's Lake Vacation Looks So Peaceful, but Her Swimwear Is Playful as Ever

Kendall Jenner is currently vacationing at a secluded lake, and while I'm of course envious of her gorgeous nature trip, I'm also very interested in the swimwear she brought with her. The model took to Instagram on Thursday to share snaps from her relaxing getaway, which includes shots of Kendall sporting both a fun floral bikini and a cherry-print suit, as well as the picturesque scenery.

Captioning the carousel "i 💛 lakes," in the first photo, Kendall posed in a bright-yellow triangle top with colorful floral details and matching high-cut bottoms. Her adorable set is from Heavy Manners, and while stock is running low for her exact swimsuit, the brand also has many similar print bikinis in the same cut. She wore the same sunny two-piece while casually riding a jet ski in the lake.

In another snap, Kendall is seen lying on a deck by the glistening water, in a cherry-print swim set from HVN and a simple baseball cap. Luckily, the fruit bra bikini top and matching tie bottoms are still available on HVN in multiple sizes. Ahead, get a closer look at Kendall's lake 'grams and shop her exact swimwear.

Experts Explain Why a Vaccine Is the Only Safe Way to Achieve Herd Immunity For COVID-19

You may have heard the term "herd immunity" tossed around in response to the novel coronavirus, but the idea that we could overcome the pandemic if enough people were exposed to COVID-19 is a dangerous notion. In fact, experts told POPSUGAR that it could lead to "millions of excess deaths."

"There is a common misconception about the coronavirus that all that is needed is herd immunity and the pandemic will cease," said David Cutler, MD, a family medicine physician at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. "The misconception is that herd immunity can be achieved with ease, low cost, and few lives lost." According to Dr. Cutler, this couldn't be further from the truth, and herd immunity is actually quite difficult to achieve.

What Is Herd Immunity?

"Herd immunity occurs when a high percentage of a population is immune to a disease, either from having a prior infection then recovering or from a vaccination," Natasha Bhuyan, MD, a physician and regional director at One Medical, told POPSUGAR. "The exact threshold for herd immunity depends on the specific disease."

Dr. Cutler explained that this threshold varies based on how easily the disease is spread. "Measles, which is highly infectious, requires over 90 percent of the population to be immune before herd immunity will be achieved. Meanwhile, influenza can be controlled with a 60 percent level of herd immunity," he said. COVID-19 might be somewhere in the middle: "Most experts expect that coronavirus would require 70 to 80 percent protection to achieve herd immunity."

Herd immunity is typically achieved through a vaccine, such as that for polio. "This is a disease which just a few decades ago brought fear to parents that their children would be paralyzed for life. And although isolated cases still occur in many places, a high enough proportion of people are immune through vaccination that epidemics no longer occur," Dr. Cutler said.

In other cases, like chicken pox, herd immunity has been achieved through vaccination and natural exposure, he explained. "Before the vaccine existed, parents would bring previously uninfected children into contact with the disease to get them infected, and thus immune before adulthood, when the disease could be much more serious."

Why Can't We Achieve "Natural" Herd Immunity to COVID-19?

There are a few reasons. First, "the prevalence rate is not high enough currently to confer immunity in enough individuals," Dr. Bhuyan said, meaning that many more would need to be exposed to achieve herd immunity. "Additionally, we actually know very little about individual immunity from COVID-19." It's still too soon for medical experts to know how many people develop immunity to the disease or how long that immunity lasts, which means we could be risking people's lives with little to no hope of achieving the desired outcome.

That's where things get particularly dangerous with COVID-19 - because while some would argue that the virus isn't that deadly, that simply isn't true. The death rate is much higher for those over 80, Dr. Cutler explained, and "sex, race, and underlying health conditions can also pose increased risk." Bottom line: "This approach to achieving herd immunity assumes vulnerable people will not be exposed, and that is why achieving herd immunity without a vaccine is problematic," he said.

"It would result in millions of excess deaths in the hope of achieving herd immunity through widespread exposure," Dr. Cutler continued. "And even if enough people got infected, there would be no assurance of achieving effective herd immunity." The focus should instead be on developing a safe and effective vaccine as soon as possible.

The Retro Disney Characters That Inspired Mulan's Biggest Hair and Makeup Moments

We've been anticipating the release of Disney's live-action Mulan ever since we caught word that it was in the works. Now that the premiere is finally here, we can't wait to see how this reboot takes the original animated story that we all know and love and transforms it into a larger-than-life live-action film. Judging by the official trailer, posters, and behind the scenes snapshots from filming, it's clear this is going to be a beautiful movie with elaborate hair, makeup, and costume designs.

Hair and makeup designer Denise Kum had the all-important job of bringing the movie characters to life. Leading up to filming, she spent time researching China's rich history and culture, specifically during the Tang Dynasty - the empire that Mulan's story is loosely based on - and allowed that to guide her hair and makeup decisions.

"We're not trying to be 100 percent historically accurate because we wanted to be able to have a little bit of fantasy in there as well," Kum told POPSUGAR. "You've got at once incredible naturalism and then you've got also this mysterious fantasy element which is much more a mix of incredible traditional elements of makeup and the idea of symbolism in Chinese."

Ahead, she talks about how she blended elements of fantasy with the Chinese culture and color symbolism to create each of the characters' looks. (Spoiler alert: it involves some of your favorite retro Disney characters.)

We're Listening to Blackpink and Selena Gomez's "Ice Cream" on Repeat - We Might as Well Work Out to It

There are so many iconic things about "Ice Cream," the new Blackpink and Selena Gomez collab, from that capybara cameo to their show-stopping pastel styling, but the choreography has to be right up at the top. If you're trying to channel Blackpink and Selena's popstar moves while getting in a full-on workout, we've got good news. Fitness YouTuber Maddie Lymburner, aka MadFit, just dropped the total-body dance workout that this show-stopping song deserves.

Like all of her dance workouts, Lymburner combines solid bodyweight moves with fun dance steps to make this routine entertaining and effective. She does squats, lunges, punches, and high kicks during the verses, but saves the chorus for the choreography (as it should be). The song has a slow tempo, which makes the simple choreography fun and easy to follow. Check out the full workout above, and if you want more, try this ab-tastic workout to "Dynamite" by BTS.

These Hocus Pocus Tattoos Are Tiny, but They'll Put a Spell on You

We used to think that watching Hocus Pocus on a weekly basis throughout the entire month of October was a strong enough display of our love for the movie, but that was before we found out that there are dozens of people out there who are (understandably) dedicating permanent body art to the Halloween classic. We'll admit it: Hocus Pocus tattoos - specifically of the tiny variety - are a very niche category, but they're also very popular, and considering the fact that the film will forever hold a place in our spooky, Halloween-loving hearts, it's easy to understand why.

The trend itself isn't new at all, and these tattoos aren't something that fans of the film have to wait around until Halloween to get, but they're definitely a fun way to keep yourself in the holiday spirit all year long. Keep scrolling ahead for a few of our favorite tiny Hocus Pocus tattoos that we saw on Instagram.

I've Tried a Lot of CBD Products, and These Hemp-Derived Picks Are the Very Best

Since 2011, cannabis has helped me ease anxiety, heal from trauma, manage pain, deal with depression, sleep better, and so much more - but lately, I've definitely been in a CBD-centric phase. Over the last year, the state of the world, along with my own physical health issues, has left me craving a sense of controlled calm that, for me at least, is easiest to find with full-spectrum CBD products and low-dose THC products. Plus, I currently live in a state where THC-dominant products are only legal for medical cannabis patients, and I can't afford my medical card yet.

Whether you're seeking pain relief, you could use some help managing your mental health, or you're just looking for a way to relax while still maintaining a sense of control, the CBD products in this roundup are worth a try. I've personally used or consumed every one of them, and in my opinion, they're the best of the best. They're all made with high-quality, hemp-sourced CBD, and if you live in the US, they'll ship right to your door.

Old Navy Dropped Affordable Leopard-Print Activewear, and It's Fall Workout Motivation

Workout gear has become incredibly varied lately - prints, pant lengths, and styles continue to get cuter. Where I once was choosing between basic legging variations like cropped length vs. full length, I can now sort through a plethora of options that run that gamut from printed biker shorts to tie-dye prints and even tropical. And one retailer in particular is experimenting with all of these styles regularly. Old Navy not only keeps the price point reasonable, but maintains high-quality fabrics in super cute prints. Right now, I'm on a serious leopard print kick and these nine pieces are catching my eye big time.

Home Depot Has a 10.5 Foot Oogie Boogie Halloween Inflatable - Don't Tell Sandy Claws

Home Depot is really delivering on all spooky fronts as we head into Halloween. Please welcome the giant 10.5 foot Oogie Boogie inflatable to your front lawn!

At this point, Oogie Boogie is synonymous with all things Halloween. Built-in LED lights make this inflatable a sight to behold, and of course, you can spot him holding his signature dice - someone warn Sandy Claws! Get a closer look at the ominous Oogie Boogie below, and decide if you're ready to welcome him to your home.

Home Depot Has a 10.5 Foot Oogie Boogie Halloween Inflatable - Don't Tell Sandy Claws

Home Depot is really delivering on all spooky fronts as we head into Halloween. First, we were "oohing" and "aahing" over the store's life-size Jack Skellington and Sally decor, and now we've spotted another Nightmare Before Christmas character to add to our collection. Please welcome the giant 10.5 foot Oogie Boogie inflatable to your front lawn!

At this point, Oogie Boogie is synonymous with all things Halloween. We've seen the creepy, crawly villain in the form of bath bombs, popcorn buckets, and more during the fall, but there's something extra terrific (and frightening!) about a towering, glowing green monster as outdoor decor, wouldn't you agree? Built-in LED lights make this inflatable a sight to behold, and of course, you can spot him holding his signature dice - someone warn Sandy Claws! Get a closer look at the ominous Oogie Boogie below, and decide if you're ready to welcome him to your home.
