Running a Virtual Marathon Isn't All About Mileage: Pay Attention to Your Outer Knees
While most major marathons are canceled due to the ongoing health crisis, many runners are still pushing their personal distance and intensity records in preparation for virtual races - yes, virtual marathons, included.
And with marathon season comes iliotibial (IT) band syndrome season. It's true: from August to October, Dr. James Gladstone, MD, the chief of the Sports Medicine Service at Mount Sinai Health System, always sees a spike in running patients experiencing outer-knee pain.
Dr. Gladstone explained that roads have a pitch that allows for water drainage, and running in the same direction on these roads all the time can strain your IT band (a thick tendon that runs from the outer side of your pelvis and attaches to the knee). When your IT band is tight, it can rub against the outer thigh bone and create friction, pain, and inflammation on the outer knee, Dr. Gladstone said.
"The most common symptom is pain on the outer side of the knee that typically develops as you begin to run. Sometimes, one can run through it, but when it gets bad, it stops you from running often after only a quarter of a mile or so."
According to Dr. Gladstone, that pain can range from a low-grade achiness and soreness to stabbing, burning, or piercing discomfort.
He added that bad workout habits like ignoring the pain, not stretching or foam rolling, or not backing off your running distance or intensity can cause IT band syndrome to remain or worsen.
Warming up and cooling down before and after running can certainly help loosen up the muscle and tendon, and possibly prevent the onset of IT band syndrome. When doing so, make sure to focus on the flexibility in your hips, glutes, hamstrings, and calves, Dr. Gladstone said.
"When [IT band syndrome] gets really bad, you have no choice but to stop running. Foam rolling can be very helpful and targeted physical therapy can be equally helpful."
In some severe cases, surgery is necessary for recovery as well, so it's very important that you see a doctor if you're experiencing pain.
Many who are training at a marathon level consider running a passion. So, for the sake of longevity, switch up your route, love your foam roller, take breaks, and never hesitate to seek a doctor's advice when needed.

It's Written in the Stars! Here's Your Schitt's Creek Counterpart, According to the Zodiac
Between its big heart and epic fashion, Schitt's Creek is beloved for practically a zillion reasons, but perhaps the show's biggest draw is its cast of lovable characters. If you've ever felt seen by Moira's penchant for drama or Johnny's all-business attitude, you might find the reason for your connection in the stars! While you likely don't have all of their quirks (and they have many, many of those), these characters definitely have lovely attributes that make them unforgettable. So grab a smoothie from Café Tropical and keep reading ahead to see which Schitt's Creek resident you are based on your zodiac sign.

Sloane Stephens, Naomi Osaka, and Frances Tiafoe Support BLM During the 2020 US Open
The 2020 US Open commenced on Aug. 31 - minus the crowd. Though the atmosphere at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center grounds was quieter than usual, some players spoke up more loudly than ever in the face of racial injustice and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Naomi Osaka, who won the US Open women's singles title, brought seven different masks featuring the names of Black lives lost at the hands of police brutality and other acts of violence. "It's quite sad that seven masks isn't enough for the amount of names," the 22-year-old who represents Japan said in a post-match interview after the first round, "so hopefully I'll get to the finals and you can see all of them." She wore names of people such as Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and Trayvon Martin.
American Sloane Stephens, who won the US Open in 2017 and lost against Serena Williams in the third round this year, came to her matches wearing masks with the phrases "Black Lives Matter" and "No Justice No Peace." Stephens posted a message on Instagram in response to pro athletes postponing their games at the end of August following the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake. The message, released a few days before the start of the US Open, read in part, "Unarmed Black people continue to be murdered and unjustly treated, and it is infuriating and devastating."
Stephens continued, "As athletes, we have unique platforms, and I believe it is our responsibility to use them wisely." She wrote, "People can't choose to support part of us, the part that entertains them on court or on the field, and ignore the part of us that makes us who we are while our brothers and sisters are persecuted."
Frances Tiafoe, also representing the US and who is ranked 82 in the world, used his platform to bring awareness to the Black Lives Matter movement as well before being eliminated on Sept. 7. He wore a "Black Lives Matter" sweatshirt and mask, and he wrote that phrase along with "Say Her Name," in reference to Breonna Taylor and other Black women subjected to violence, on his sneakers. "It's bigger than me y'all," he said on Instagram. "Doing it for my people, my communities."
Ahead, you'll see these players demonstrating and making their voices heard amid the hushed courts of the 2020 US Open.
57 Unfiltered Thoughts on Netflix's Campy Horror Sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen
I love a good campy horror film, particularly when it revolves around an unsupervised party at a lake, like Netflix's The Babysitter: Killer Queen. The film - which is a sequel to 2017's The Babysitter - sees the return of stars Judah Lewis and Emily Alyn Lind as best friends Cole and Melanie. While Melanie is popular and deals with the traumatic events of the first film by forgetting they ever happened, Cole is a social outcast who feels as if he's going insane because nobody believes him. When he learns that his parents plan on sending him to a psychiatric high school, he ditches school with Melanie for a party at a lake in the hopes of her reciprocating his crush. Thanks to a game of two minutes in heaven - because two minutes is more realistic than seven - he finally gets to have his romantic moment with Melanie.
Of course, this is when everything goes to sh*t, as the blood cult is back to finish their ritual before the sun rises. If they don't complete the ritual, they have to go back to hell and wait another two years to finish. The sequel takes everything that made the first movie ridiculously fun and turns it up to 100. I'd go so far as to say it supersedes the original, at least when it comes to blood, gore, and perfectly timed movie references. If you're a fan of horror comedies like Happy Death Day and Zombieland, this film is definitely right up your alley. Keep reading for all the unfiltered thoughts I had while watching The Babysitter: Killer Queen, which is now streaming on Netflix.
Barbie Ferreira Discusses Unpregnant and Hopes For Euphoria Season 2: "I'm Ready For Any Curveball"
While Barbie Ferreira's Euphoria character, Kat Hernandez, walks the halls like she owns them, her Unpregnant character, Bailey, is the total opposite as a social outcast that sits alone at lunch. Unpregnant - which premiered on HBO Max on Sept. 10 - follows Veronica (Haley Lu Richardson), who enlists her ex-best friend Bailey to take her on a road trip that changes their lives forever. The film tackles the important topic of abortion and how misinformation is easily spread - albeit, people aren't usually kidnapped by Breckin Meyer in the process. In a recent interview with POPSUGAR, Ferreira discussed her favorite scene to film, what she hopes people take away from the movie, and what she wishes for Kat in season two of Euphoria.
Related: Unpregnant Is a Buddy Road Comedy With an Unlikely Objective: Abortion
POPSUGAR: What was your favorite scene to film?
Barbie Ferreira: The car chases are probably my favorite because I love being loud - it was a lot of me and Haley just screaming in a car with a green screen.
PS: I loved how the movie touched on social media and how it's a big part of people's lives. Even though she was going on this really big journey, Veronica still felt the need to post. How do you use your platform on social media to speak about issues that are important to you?
BF: It's been a journey. When I was a model, I talked about a lot of different things that just really spoke to me. While I've kept up that energy now, I'm really trying to think of what to do outside of social media because it can be sort of performative. I still am vocal on political issues, but now it's also like how do I actually make a difference?
PS: Unpregnant is very similar to Euphoria in the way that it's raw and covers real issues. You're able to cover a topic like abortion in a manner that makes it seem less scary than what most people make it out to be. What do you hope people take away from this movie?
BF: First and foremost, I hope people get accurate information because there can be a lot of misinformation out there about reproductive health and reproductive access. [And second,] a great friendship story full of really funny, lighthearted, and heart-tugging moments - all of the stuff that comes from a feel-good movie.
PS: I definitely felt that it accomplished that, particularly with the car chase between the RV and the suburban, when Haley yells out the window, "That's not true." She starts spouting off facts, and I was like, "Wow, we're learning things as we watch them get away from these lunatic kidnappers." What did you think about Haley's line to Breckin Meyer's character?
BF: Don't kidnap people. That's not good or legal. Haley's line is important because a lot of people in her character's position would feel guilt, shamed, or believe the misinformation. But, of course, Veronica has a really good head on her shoulders and is very autonomous and knows what she wants. She also knows exactly what's going on and her line debunks these very common myths that are circulated to this day, and I love that.

"Essentially, incorporating the humor with the darkness that comes with being a 17-year-old was my favorite part."
PS: What's your favorite part about playing Bailey?
BF: She's this really complicated character that deflects with a lot of humor, but is still very deeply emotional. She's also one of those ride-or-dies - she'll do anything without rhyme or reason. However, you understand throughout the movie why she does what she does, why she acts in a certain way, and all these little unique details that make everything make sense. Essentially, incorporating the humor with the darkness that comes with being a 17-year-old was my favorite part.
PS: What was your favorite part about her friendship with her ride-or-die, Haley Lu Richardson's character Veronica?
BF: I just love that they bonded over Star Trek. They were very carefree about judgment and weren't caught up in what people think little girls should like and they explored all of these different avenues together. It's sad that it kind of came to a halt because Veronica, of course, chose a different path growing up and Bailey was stuck on this other path.
"I want to play something completely outside of my comfort zone."
PS: You've accomplished so much already, but what kind of project or role do you hope to take on next?
BF: I want to play something completely outside of my comfort zone, which I think Unpregnant was a little. It was at least very different from Euphoria. I don't know, maybe I'll get a vampire slayer, wolf, ghost, possessed girl, or something. I'm up for anything.
PS: Much like Bailey, there's a lot more to your Euphoria character than meets the eye - can you give fans a hint as to what to expect from Kat's arc or what you hope for her in season two?
BF: What I love about Euphoria is that it throws curveballs, so I'm ready for any curveball that Sam Levinson is going to throw at me. I have no idea what's going to happen, but I do hope that Kat evolves within the journey and gets to make different decisions. Teens are going to mess up and have to learn from their experiences, so I hope that she continues being her flawed yet bad*ss self, navigating the world and understanding what she likes and what she doesn't.
PS: Who from the Euphoria cast would you want to go on a road trip with?
BF: I would probably go with Alexa Demie because I love her and think we are really funny together.
PS: Is there an ideal road trip you'd like to go on?
BF: Maybe Colorado, or somewhere really naturey with a lake or a river because I like to swim.
PS: What's a song you have to have on your road trip playlist?
BF: I've been listening to a lot of Nicki Minaj, as everyone around me knows, because I only play Nicki Minaj. But you know what, I'm actually going to switch it up for this one. I'm going to say "Hit Different" by SZA featuring Ty Dolla $ign.

These Actors Almost Didn't Get The Roles That Made Them Stars
A TV or movie character is only as iconic as the actor who plays them. And while some characters were written with certain actors in mind, others didn't exactly have an easy time scoring their career-making role. Some actors were almost passed up for bigger names. Some were initially dismissed because they had bad auditions or the wrong "look." There are even actors who almost missed out on their big break because they doubted their own abilities. We've rounded up notable actors who almost didn't get their biggest roles, and you may be surprised by some of the people who were close to missing their chance.

Meet Dutch Tennis Player Diede de Groot, Aiming For Her 3rd US Open Wheelchair Title
Diede de Groot's career goals, according to her website, are to win multiple times at the tennis Grand Slams and to become an Olympic champion. The 23-year-old from the Netherlands has already made a major dent in those goals - actually, she's crushed them.
De Groot is currently the No. 1 player in women's wheelchair tennis and has won back-to-back singles titles at Wimbledon (2017 and 2018), the US Open (2018 and 2019), and the Australian Open (2018 and 2019). She claimed her first French Open singles title last year, and this means she's won every type of Grand Slam tournament there is in tennis at least once - and she only made her Grand Slam debut in 2017!
Aside from her major singles wins, de Groot has raked up doubles wins at all four Grand Slams, is a three-time world champion, and has titles at the Wheelchair Tennis Masters. And, to top it all off, she won a silver medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games. She's currently hoping to win her third straight US Open women's wheelchair singles title on Sept. 12.
Keep reading for some facts about de Groot that you may not know.
I'm a College Athlete, and This Is What It's Been Like to Start Training During COVID-19
I fractured my femur in late February of my freshman year. As a Division I student athlete in track and cross country, I was devastated. I had redshirted that year, and if I couldn't heal in time for the fall cross country season, I wouldn't race in my first eligible meet. Little did I know, my injury preceded a pandemic that quickly shut down college athletics. Our season was canceled, and my teammates and I were sent home - me to recover, them to miss the rest of their track season.
We spent the summer anxiously awaiting the news that fall sports would be called off by our conference, but it never came. My teammates and I returned to the university for a season unlike any we'd experienced before. A reduced meet schedule, biweekly COVID-19 testing, and smaller group runs have been just a few of the ways we've adjusted for COVID-19. And while those adjustments aren't so bad, the emotional ramifications of the pandemic run much deeper.
I live, eat, sleep, and train with my teammates, which is a double-edged sword. On one hand, I'm incredibly grateful that our university has the resources to test us twice a week. While I have friends outside the team that I wish I could see, it's comforting to know that everyone I spend my time with has been tested recently. On the other hand, I'm nervous to visit the library or even the grocery store, for fear of bringing back the virus and infecting the whole team.
As athletes, we've made a commitment to each other to take as many precautions as we can so that we don't lose our season. If we're exposed, we can't be with the team. Most of us live with other runners and would have to move out for two weeks to quarantine, and that weighs on us. Students who aren't athletes don't carry the same burden, which is why being on campus doesn't always feel safe. I was able to take all my classes online this semester, but some of my teammates didn't have that option.
While it can feel like COVID-19 is always lurking around the corner, I'm deeply thankful that we're back on campus for the cross country season. As a year-round athlete, it's frustrating to train without being able to race, so I'm grateful for the four meets we do have scheduled. Because cross country takes place outdoors, it's been an easier adjustment for us than it has been for other sports. We wear masks for any indoor training, and run in smaller groups without masks outside.
Running is at the core of my college experience, and school wouldn't feel the same without it.
I train indoors more often than my teammates, because I work out on different cardio machines as part of my recovery. While my leg has healed, I'm still working up to the same level of fitness I was at before my injury. Not being able to visit our training staff for the first five months of it made progress more difficult, so while I'm grateful to be back to running, I wish I was closer to racing speed. And while the schedule this fall will be easier for my recovery, with fewer races set further back in the year, I still wish that we had a full season. Many of my teammates trained hard over the summer and are ready to race. Even though I'm not physically where I want to be, I'm excited for them and grateful that they're able to compete at all.
Whether I'm race-ready or not, I'm happy that this season is happening. Although the NCAA gave us an additional year of eligibility, not every athlete wants to stick around for more than four or five years. For many students, particularly those who have already redshirted, losing this season would have meant one less opportunity to race. It's safe to say that most of my teammates, regardless of their graduation plans, are thankful to be back on the course.
While competing during COVID-19 certainly isn't perfect, I'm glad that I'm doing it, and I feel that my university has put the proper measures in place to keep its athletes safe. Watching schools cut programs, conferences opt out, and athletes lose their seasons has made me even more grateful to be racing, no matter how fast I can run. While COVID-19 brings heightened anxiety to campus, running is at the core of my college experience, and school wouldn't feel the same without it.
Watch These Super Kind Kids Melt Even the Iciest Hearts
We are not exaggerating - these are some of the most icy-heart-thawing examples of childhood kindness that we've ever come across! Just try not to make the "Aw!" face when you see a 2-year-old kid, after a bath, request to hold each parent's hand and then declare they're a family.
This pure tenderness is such a joy to witness these days, and certainly leaves us with the warm fuzzies. If a child can't enjoy themselves until their tiny dog friend has their toy, or until their doll gets to use the slide too, it feels like the future is in very good, tiny, adorable hands.

Oh, Hell Yes! The Girlfriends Cast Just Reunited For an Unfiltered Walk Down Memory Lane
The girls are back! The cast of Girlfriends took a nostalgic trip down memory lane - all the way back to 2000 - when they virtually reunited on Friday. The core four women of the hit '00s sitcom - Tracee Ellis Ross (Joan), Jill Marie Jones (Toni), Golden Brooks (Maya), and Persia White (Lynn) - hopped on a Zoom call to celebrate the show's 20th anniversary and its recent release on Netflix. While the girlfriends previously reunited on screen last year in an episode of Black-ish, the video chat is their first "uncensored" reunion without a moderator, and we could feel their excitement through the screen.
"All four of us were so protective of what we were trying to say."
The actresses sat down (with drinks, of course) to discuss how they'd grown up together in real life, their hilarious ongoing group chat, and the lasting impact of Girlfriends, which followed the lives of four Black women. "All four of us were so protective of what we were trying to say and I have to say that we as a cast constantly spoke up and said, 'this doesn't feel right,'" Ross said. Brooks added, "We all come from four different walks of life, and we had to honor each of our journeys and what that dynamic felt like to us."
"If you saw something on the show that you didn't like, we probably had a conversation about it," White also said. "We can't win every battle and we're here to do our jobs, but we tried our best when it came to not objectifying the perception of Black women and our own struggles. And all our shades, physically and emotionally, we're different, and I felt like that was the gift we kept trying to give." The women discussed how proud they were of themselves for tackling these issues as Black women back in the early 2000s. Girlfriends dropped on Netflix Friday, joining a slate of other Black sitcoms that recently arrived to the streaming platform, including Sister, Sister and Moesha. Watch the girlfriends' full, unfiltered conversation above, and get ready for some laughs.

I Have an Anxiety Disorder - Here Are 5 Ways I'm Coping With This Tumultuous Year
I can't remember a time I didn't feel worried about something. As a child I fixated on issues both real and imagined, from the single question I'd answered incorrectly on a test to how I might escape my bedroom if the house caught on fire during the night. It was like my brain was trying to sprint through quicksand. I carried this sense of impending doom into adulthood, where it hovered over my career, my relationships, and my overall sense of self-worth. Finally, at the age of 31, I met with a therapist, who put a name to my invisible villain: I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), a condition that affects 6.8 million adults in the US each year.
Recognizing the symptoms of GAD has allowed me to implement strategies to better manage and redirect my anxiety. I'm especially grateful for these tools in 2020 - a year best described as a cornucopia of chaos. Here are some of the methods I've used to tackle stress and uncertainty during this unprecedented time. If you need professional guidance, talk to your doctor or work to find a therapist you can see regularly even if you're unable to meet with them in person.
