Scared of Getting Injured in CrossFit? Use This Physical Therapist's Tips
CrossFit is gaining more popularity than ever - it's a serious challenge. Both men and women are noticing how they can progress quickly - even when they're starting from square one with no experience. However, there's no denying that the calisthenics and weightlifting can cause injury if you're not maintaining proper form or if you're not strong enough to take on a specific move or exercise.
Short and Intense, This 10-Minute CrossFit Video Will Leave You Sweaty and Sore
We asked Adam Discepolo, DPT at Professional Physical Therapy, how we can continue to do CrossFit - safely, and injury-free. These tips actually go well beyond CrossFit and can be applied to so many types of fitness.
Choose the Right Location
Which box is right for you? While Discepolo told us that there are likely tons of convenient locations near you, opting for the most experienced instructor is important. "With the complexity of the exercises, it is important to have someone show you the correct techniques and how to modify them based on [your] needs or physical ability," he said. When instructors have more expertise and education, "the program design and teaching of exercises are more appropriate."
How does one evaluate whether the gym is right for their needs? Discepolo said, "I would recommend observing a class to see how the instructors teach and interact with the members." Shop around if you need to!
Know Your Limits
Listen to your body and know your limitations. Take it easy on the AMRAPs! "With the high volume of repetitions involved in most CrossFit workouts, it's important to listen to your body and be able to differentiate between soreness and pain," said Discepolo.
"You should never have pain from a lift, but a burning or soreness is an appropriate feeling." Still feeling sore, achy, or possibly like you got hit by a truck? No matter what your workout, take an extra rest day. "Lifting while still sore from a previous workout could result in breakdown of form, and this is when injuries tend to occur."
Focus on Flexibility
This doesn't just mean touching your toes! Discepolo emphasized the importance of working on your mobility and flexibility, "especially if you are a first-timer." In his words, "Coming in off the street and starting to perform these Olympic-style lifts can be extremely challenging, especially if your body doesn't have the mobility or flexibility for it." It can also lead to injury - he told us that it will cause "increased compression across joint surfaces."
Your best bet? Warm up. Always. This will "increase blood flow, internal body temperature, and mobility to muscles and tissue, as well as spend time increasing your flexibility to allow you to go through the full range of motion of these exercises, as they were intended." Sounds good to us.
Take Rest Days
"As CrossFit's popularity has increased, it has been viewed more as a sport, especially for those at advanced levels," said Discepolo. "However, just like any sport, there should be off time." He's totally right - every type of fitness needs rest, especially a challenging one like CrossFit. "Every major professional sport has an off season, and if you are a serious CrossFit competitor, so should you."
"This allows muscles, ligaments, and joints to recover from the constant pounding they take during these high-intensity programs. If the pros take time off to recover, so should you!" His rule of thumb: for every three months of consistent, intense exercise like CrossFit (five to six days a week), you should consider taking one week off to recover.
Your Complete Guide to the Mythical Creatures of Game of Thrones
By now, we know that some of the most interesting characters on Game of Thrones aren't humans at all. There's all sorts of magical stuff going down on the show, and there are plenty of creatures you need to know about in order to fully understand what's happening. While we're in this hideous hiatus, educate yourself on all the non-human entities on the show, and why each is important.
Thanks to a Wheelchair, This Pit Bull Gets to Enjoy Beautiful Adventures With His Owners
Learn the incredible story of Mel from our friends at This Dog's Life. This Pit Bull mix doesn't let anything get in the way of his adventures.
Named Mel, the dog was adopted by photographer Tom Dilworth and his wife Tamara, a teacher, after they visited the Yonkers Animal Shelter in New York. Initially, the pair had gone to see another dog but when the pup wasn't a good fit, the staff brought out Mel.
"I had taken him for a walk and had stopped for a moment to take a break. When I did, he came over and rested his head on my leg," Tom tells This Dog's Life. "We knew then that he was the one."
After having Mel in their household for a few weeks, the Dilworths noticed the 8-year-old dog was having a little trouble walking and initially thought he was just clumsy.
"It slowly got worse and we realized it was more than that," Dilworth says. Taking him to the vet, he was diagnosed with cerebellar abiotrophy, a neurological condition that makes balance and coordination difficult.
To help stabilize Mel, Tom and Tamara began using a harness but decided a wheelchair may be a better solution. After reaching out to Eddie's Wheels for Pets, the pair decided to get Mel a set of wheels. At first, it took some getting used to Mel, but after a few adjustments, the pup was ready to take on the world.
"As soon as he is in, he is off and running. Often he tries to head out before he is even all in," says Dilworth. "Once he is, watch you feet, because he will roll over them."
Because the wheels have allowed Mel's mobility to greatly improve, the Dilworths are able to take him on some pretty amazing adventures - including exploring the mountains, the ocean and many nature paths on hiking excursions.

The 1 Word That's Destroying Your Chance at Losing Weight and Being Healthy
Sitting motionless in my kitchen, staring blankly and hopelessly at my pantry, I felt the onset of an anxiety attack.
As a complete and total omnivore (I truly eat all the foods), it was the first time I didn't know what I was "allowed" to eat - and I was SO hungry. My doctor had just put me on the low FODMAPs diet, which is in my opinion the most confusing, unnavigable, impossible diet on the planet, with conflicting information from so many sources. The list of things you can't eat seemed infinite . . . no peaches, no wheat, no milk, no fruit juice or avocados or honey (there are quite literally hundreds of items). I focused so much on the "no" list, that I had zero idea what to eat. I sat there paralyzed (and honestly, starving, with low blood sugar that probably exacerbated this situation). Panic started to creep in.
If I had focused more on what I could eat, I would've realized that scrambled eggs would've been a great option. I could've eaten a banana or an orange or even made myself some oatmeal with coconut milk. I also would've prevented a panic attack, which would've been really nice.
This made me realize how much we focus on what we can't do vs. what we can and how much that word "can't" paralyzes us in so many ways - especially when it comes to diet and exercise.
Have you felt this way with your food? So much anxiety and unnecessary stress stems from this idea of what we can't do, can't have, can't eat. I have watched friends start their new lives as vegans, feeling their frustration of what they can't eat without focusing on all the good, delicious foods they love that they can eat. Sure, you can't eat Kraft Mac 'n' Cheese anymore, but you totally can eat that quinoa veggie bowl you love and also that fruit smoothie and that spaghetti dish. By focusing on what we can eat, we liberate ourselves from a crippling list of can'ts.
When I talked to a woman named Brooke who had lost over 100 pounds, she said she focused less on what she couldn't eat and instead concentrated on adding in healthy foods (one green vegetable) to every meal. This empowered her to make better, healthier decisions without feeling like she was cut off from things she loved.
This also applies to fitness. For years I told myself (and others), "I can't do that, I'm not an athlete" or "I can't do that, I'm not fit" or "I can't run, I'm slow." So again, I was paralyzed. It was the opposite of empowering; I did no sort of physical activity for years upon years and never attended a yoga class or went to a gym. The second I stopped focusing on what I couldn't do and focused on what I could - in this case, it was "I can actually move my body forward for several miles at a slow pace without dying" - I opened myself up to an entire world of healthy activity.
The "I can move my body forward" became "I can run a mile" (albeit a very slow one). That became "I can run three miles," which eventually became "I can run a half marathon." I stopped focusing on can'ts in other areas and started small with the things I could do - one thing led to another, and now fitness plays a central role in my life.
I needed a reminder of this the other day when I started the low FODMAPs diet. And honestly, I feel like I need a reminder of this in several areas of my life! When we only see what we can't do, we miss out on so much of what we can, and it gets in the way of our everyday life - we end up shortchanging ourselves.
Don't get in your own way, and don't paralyze yourself with your words. Empower yourself! What can you do? What can you eat? What can you try? Go for it!

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Meatloaf
Before you dis the idea of meatloaf, hear me out. When done right (like this Italian meatloaf with marinara sauce by Recipe Tin Eats, it's actually good. If your only mental image of the old-school dinnertime staple involves a dry log of ground beef covered in ketchup, you'll be surprised by how upscale and flavorful it can be. These recipes are proof! Here's how some of our favorite celebrity chefs and Food Network personalities make meatloaf; in other words, the only ways you'll ever prepare it again.
Giada De Laurentiis: Add Feta and Sun-Dried Tomatoes
Giada lightens up the classic with her recipe for turkey meatloaf with feta and sun-dried tomatoes. Turkey is drier than beef, so the recipe calls for plenty of Italian ingredients that add extra flavor, like garlic, parsley, sun-dried tomatoes with herbs, and feta.
Alton Brown: Mix Ground Chuck and Sirloin
By using a combination of ground chuck and sirloin in his Good Eats meatloaf recipe, Alton Brown ensures there's no lack of flavor or moisture. What makes this version even better is the sweet homemade glaze made of Worcestershire sauce, honey, cumin, and hot sauce.
Ina Garten: Go Classic
If you're looking for a totally classic meatloaf recipe that delivers, Ina Garten's meatloaf is for you. None of the ingredients are out of the ordinary (olive oil, onions, tomato paste, breadcrumbs, and, yes, ketchup), but when measured to a T - that's one of Ina's best cooking tips - they result in a no-fail meatloaf you're sure to love.
Chrissy Teigen: Use Half Spicy Italian Sausage
"Man, I love meatloaf," Chrissy Teigen wrote in the introduction of her recipe for Spicy Italian Sausage Meatloaf on page 202 of her cookbook, Cravings. She goes on to explain that she even loved the frozen TV dinner kind, but "Now, of course, I prefer my meatloaf made of actual, you know, meat. And not just any meat, the gift that is spicy Italian sausage." The expert home cook uses a combination of ground beef and hot Italian sausage for a guaranteed nonboring meal that lives up to the hype of her other brilliant recipes, like chicken pot pie soup.
Ree Drummond: Wrap It in Bacon
When in doubt, add bacon. Ree Drummond's meatloaf recipe, like all Pioneer Woman recipes, is simple and comforting. The Food Network host wraps the entire meatloaf in eight to 12 slices of bacon, allowing all the flavor to seep into the meat as it bakes.
Mario Batali: Stuff With Prosciutto and Spinach
Mario Batali always adds a little somethin' somethin' to his recipes (scrambled eggs with truffles, anyone?), so it's no surprise that his meatloaf is fit for a special occasion. His meatloaf stuffed with prosciutto and spinach is easy enough for anyone to master but elevated enough to impress guests. Freshly grated pecorino cheese and red wine take the flavors to the next level.
Jared Leto Is Shirtless on the Cover of Rolling Stone, So Today Is a Really Good Day
We'll take any opportunity to see Jared Leto shirtless, which is why the actor's new Rolling Stone cover is such a nice addition to the week. In the issue, Jared spoke out about his role as The Joker in Suicide Squad and opened up about the comparisons between his performance as the iconic villain and that of Heath Ledger, who tragically died of an accidental prescription drug overdose shortly after completing The Dark Knight in 2008. "Heath did an impeccable, perfect performance as the Joker," Jared said, adding, "It's one of the best performances ever in cinema. I had met Heath before. I didn't know him well, but he was a beautiful person."
Jared also indulged Rolling Stone writer Brian Hiatt with some nostalgic reflection about his iconic role as Jordan Catalano on the '90s coming-of-age TV show My So-Called Life. "I feel like it was such a short period of my life," Jared said of the show, which he starred in alongside Claire Danes. "Let's face it, I barely spoke! I have a lot of gratitude for starting there, but they made such a big deal of the character in the show. I think for some people, especially girls at that time, it mirrored something in their lives. I don't know. It did make an impact for people, but it's always been so imbalanced with what the experience was for me in my own life."
OK, Jared - fair point. But we still seriously love that hunky idiot Jordan Catalano, and we think he'd be pretty proud of your real-life success.

Paint Mixing Videos Are the Most Oddly Satisfying Trend on the Internet
Some people get massages to relax, while others go for a jog - but for millennials, one of the easiest ways to unwind is using social media. While staring might seem like the opposite of unplugging and calming down, the latest Instagram trend is perfect for soothing your soul and feeling oddly satisfied all at once. Paint mixing, a phenomenon with over 10,000 posts in its hashtag, is exactly what it sounds like: the act of mixing different colors of paint to create new hues.
Some of these paint mixing videos have over 100,000 views, and it's for a good reason! Something about watching a combination of colors transform into something new is rejuvenating, and even the soft scraping sounds of the painting knife will help you zone out. We've rounded up some of the most beautiful examples of this trend for you to enjoy, so bookmark them for the next time you need a calming break. Enjoy!

Justice League is already coming together and we can barely contain our excitement! As you prep for all the upcoming DC Comics movies, get pumped with the full cast below, and then check out all the details we know about the film, so far.
8 Potential Bachelor in Paradise Couples
The third season of Bachelor in Paradise returns on Aug. 2, and it's set to be a real treat. For the uninitiated, Bachelor in Paradise is if you gathered all the rejected candidates from both franchises and stuck them on an island with no food but all the booze. It's basically The Bachelor on Chad's steroids. (FYI, he will be there.) So, with the season premiere imminent and the cast list revealed, we decided to pair some of them up, you know, for fun!
Rejoice! The Stars of Scandal Reunite For Season 6
Scandal's fifth season wrapped up with an explosive, politically charged finale back in May, and while the show isn't officially set to return until 2017 due to star Kerry Washington's second pregnancy, the cast reunited for a table read this week and gave us a glimpse of their cute bond via social media. On Monday, Washington - as well as costars Tony Goldwyn, Darby Stanchfield, and Katie Lowes - took to Twitter and Instagram to share snaps and videos of themselves gearing up for season six and generally enjoying each other's company.
THIS Is the 1 New iPhone Rumor That Could Have You Skipping the Next Release
Among the many iPhone 7 rumors circulating, there's one that has been sparking much debate: the removal of the headphone jack. In fact, an increasing number of sources have been confirming this change.
Before you completely decide not to upgrade for this next release, Apple does plan to compromise with customers. "According to a new research note from Deutsche Bank, Apple's upcoming iPhone 7 will ship with a Lighting to 3.5mm dongle, thereby making the transition much more seamless," reported BGR. This will allow consumers to continue using their 3.5mm-jack friendly headphones, instead of having to buy Bluetooth ones or new Lightning port headphones.
If that is the case, maybe we will upgrade. Touché, Apple.
This Is What Happens When You Try to Get Spoilers Out of the Mr. Robot Cast
Comic-Con is one of the best places for TV casts to directly connect with their fans, but that doesn't mean they're always game to let their audience in on what's coming up next. I was among a group of journalists who got to interview the cast of Mr. Robot during this year's convention, and they were not about to give anything away about the second season. Maybe it's because the show has seen a surge in popularity or maybe it's because they want viewers to be genuinely surprised by upcoming twists, but they're all great at keeping secrets. Here's what we did manage to eke out of the cast.

Luke Cage Is a Groundbreaking Piece of Modern TV, and the Whole Cast Knows It
On Sept. 30, Marvel's Luke Cage will drop on Netflix. While it's exciting to see another addition to the ever-growing comic book universe, this particular venture is so much more than just a superhero show. It features a predominantly black cast, with stars like Mike Colter, Alfre Woodard, Mahershala Ali, and Simone Missick at the helm. It's the first time we're seeing a black superhero (and also a female black superhero, for that matter) as the central focus. On Thursday, many members of the Luke Cage cast showed up at Comic-Con in San Diego to discuss the show, and they couldn't help but gush about this special piece of television history. Keep reading to find out why it's so important in terms of inclusion, equal opportunities, and representation.
Cheo Hodari Coker (Creator)
- "If there's any pressure, it's just that we want to see more people get these opportunities. So, the pressure just comes from trying to make the best show possible. So, people will say, 'Well, hey! Maybe if we do open up these opportunities, maybe if we do tell different stories, then hey, that's cool!' So, it's like, this is part of a renaissance."
- "I'm the father of three. Ten-year-old twins and a 4-year-old daughter. And I go to the movies with them all the time. I remember when I took the twins to see Captain America: Winter Soldier. And when they saw Falcon get on the scene, the excitement in their eyes. And just the fact that it was a hero that looked like them. I really, for the first time, saw the power of that. It made me really excited to do the show."
Alfre Woodard (Mariah Dillard)
- "One of the exciting things about this, besides the fact that he's bulletproof and all that . . . is that it's Harlem, baby. And Harlem has been so many things for African-Americans for so long. And I love that fact. Cheo knows Harlem, knows the history, knows the culture. And so this piece - you know, all of these Marvel superheroes - the neighborhood is a character . . . We came to Harlem because it was Harlem. You don't want to come to Harlem, buy in, and then want to get rid of the drum circle."
- "[Harlem is] everybody together. It was the scribing of the African-American. And you know, at an African-American table, everyone is welcome. But when you come, you gotta say, 'This is home,' not like, 'I'm bringing my home into your house.' It's a way to do that."
- "[The show] acknowledges what's happening present day, and it complicates it. The relationship between law enforcement, superheroes, and people that bend the law. Which, most successful business people do bend the law . . . That's one thing I love about Cornell Stokes, is that he's a man that has used everything at his disposal to be successful. And that's what black men used to have to use."
- "The motherf*cker is bulletproof!"
Simone Missick (Misty Knight)
- "Misty Knight is one of the first African-American female superheroes. We've never seen a show of color for superheroes. So, when we read these things, it's not a limitation, it's more like, 'Aw, yes! I get to do this? Yes, I will do this! You want me to . . . yes, I will do that!'"
- "I think specifically, speaking to playing Misty Knight, it was great to play a character who we've never seen before. We've never heard anyone speak her words. So there was no pressure in that sense, of going, 'Oh, but Halle Berry did it,' you know? And, 'How can I fit into those shoes?' It's like, these are your own shoes. So, it feels the same way with the show. There's a responsibility to the story, and to tell it accurately. And to be fair and honest to the people that you're representing."
- "I think, a lot of times, as a woman, you are either a wife, or a girlfriend, or a best friend. And in this opportunity, you get to see . . . Misty as a person who has a very strong moral compass, who is absolutely dedicated to protecting her community. And that, you don't see a lot of on TV. And so that was, I think the proudest moment, was to be a person who believes in the system. Even though, if you look in our current times, it's difficult to believe in the system."
Mike Colter (Luke Cage)
- "I tend to deflect because luckily, I didn't read a lot of Luke Cage growing up, so I wasn't overwhelmed by the opportunity . . . So, I look at history, and I look at what Luke Cage is, and how he's becoming the first black superhero that's brought to television. I look at it as a guy who's literally, you know, he's unaware of it in the sense that I'm unaware of it."
- "I would say, ultimately, the older generation, the people that are older than I, they walk up to me and say, 'Man, I've been waiting for so long for this character to be brought to life.' And, 'Great job, I can't wait for the series.'"

9 of the Most Underrated Characters on Orange Is the New Black
Orange Is the New Black is a show full of unforgettable characters. From conniving hipster drug mules to authoritative Russian cooks, pretty much every character leaps out at you in each of the show's scenes. There are, however, the outliers, the characters we overlook because they're either so quiet or outrageous, we don't understand the gems they truly are underneath. Here is a listing of the most underrated characters in Litchfield. Beware: there are spoilers ahead!
Olivia and Fitz's 11 Most Scandalous Sex Scenes
Since Scandal's inception, the main focus of the hit drama has been Olivia Pope and President Fitzgerald Grant. Though watching her team of gladiators tackle insane political cases with ease is fantastic, the will-they-or-won't-they pull of "Olitz" takes the cake. Whether you're rooting for Olivia and Fitz or prefer her with Jake, there's no denying that the president and his mistress have a way of lighting up the screen. Throughout the show's five seasons, we've seen plenty of scandalous moments, including them getting frisky in the Oval Office, sharing heated kisses with the Secret Service a few steps away, and even epic "one-minute" stare-downs that are arguably even more intimate than their sex scenes. Keep reading for 11 of the steamiest moments - so far. With the show back for the new season, there will surely be plenty more to come.
